<br />
The Shadowforge Dwarves are the game's latest race, and players who choose to roll one will begin their adventures in the new Yrvandis Hollows starting area. In addition to the usual newbie zone accoutrements, the area features an instance called the Outskirts of Taffrock that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster">Frogster</a> describes as "particularly challenging." Players will face off against a final boss known as Dark Gargoylem, along with his horde of aggressive spirits that have hunkered down in the lower levels of the ancient dwarven hall.<br />
<br />
<em>Runes of Magic</em> is a free-to-play fantasy title developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runewaker">Runewaker</a> and published by Frogster. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fires-of-shadowforge">Fires of Shadowforge</a> update releases June 12th.<br />

Last week on <a href="http://massively.com/category/behind-the-mask">Behind the Mask</a>, we talked about the basic dimensional structure of the <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions</em></a> universe and its parallels with the Kabballah. This week, we take you a bit deeper into the mythos of <a href="http://massively.com/tag/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a>. We'll take a look at the Astral Plane, or Yetzirah, and the key places that exist there. I'll be focusing heavily on the Quaternion -- a series of four planar zones within the Lower Astral Plane that embody most fantasy elements critical to the <em>Champions</em> Universe.<br />
<br />
If you have ever wondered about demons and angels, this is a must-read. The Vibora Bay story arc paints a very unusual picture about the nature of these planes, and we'll be covering just what Heaven and Hell are in respect to that story. We'll also be covering faeries, elves, dwarves, and other popular fantasy elements. If you're planning on creating a roleplaying character who fits into a fantasy subtype, travels through dimensions, or just uses magic, this information will be critical to you!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/05/behind-the-mask-angels-and-devils/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Behind the Mask: Angels and Devils</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/05/behind-the-mask-angels-and-devils/">Behind the Mask: Angels and Devils</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST. It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years to the month since The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring came out in movie theaters. It's even harder to process that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/peter-jackson/">Peter Jackson</a> will be bringing us back to Middle-earth with the two Hobbit films starting a year from now. The Jackson trilogy, while beloved by many (including, I assume, gamers), hasn't gotten a lot of space in this column to date. The general consensus from the community is that the films and the MMO are separate interpretations of the same source material, and never the twain shall meet -- nevermind all the <em>other</em> LotR games, like <a href="http://www.warinthenorth.com"><em>War in the North</em></a>.<br />
<br />
While that may be true, they do meet in the hearts of those who simply love this franchise. I adore the movies, am a huge fan of the game, and like (yes, just "like") the books. But I think that it's worthwhile to go to the films for <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>LotRO</em></a> players because they do give a different perspective and perhaps clarify a few plot points that shoot over our heads in-game. If nothing else, if the movies can revitalize our excitement about exploring the lands of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, then they've done well by us.<br />
<br />
I mention all this because this past week saw the release of the first Hobbit trailer, which I must have watched a good dozen times, and it got me pumped up once more for this game world. In today's column, I want to use this trailer to springboard a discussion of how <em>LotRO </em>and the films share a common bond and how the Hobbit movies use many elements that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine's</a> been working on for years now. Plus, a bonus Hobbit Tribute Tour!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/24/the-road-to-mordor-baggins-of-bag-end/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Baggins of Bag End</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/24/the-road-to-mordor-baggins-of-bag-end/">The Road to Mordor: Baggins of Bag End</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Dec 2011 12:00:00 EST. As I moved on to my second starter zone in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> on my mission to complete every quest in every area of the game, I was in for a rude, if expected, awakening. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/29/the-road-to-mordor-10-things-to-do-in-the-shire-before-you-die/">In comparison to the Shire</a>, <em>LotRO's</em> Ered Luin is lacking across the board. It's hard to imagine that the game's most eastern zone, which houses not one but two racial starting areas, could turn out to be a snoozefest, but I'll let the title of this article do the talking for me. I wanted to have 10 highlights of each zone for this series and could barely get to seven.<br />
<br />
The problem here is multifold. In trying to cram both the Elves and Dwarves into a relatively small (if tall) zone, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> didn't allow for the space to develop either race's culture before throwing them together in the middle for an awkward social dance. The races aren't allowed to really establish their personalities, either, leaving the Elves to start shining in Rivendell and the Dwarves in Moria. Finally, many of the quests are so dull and forgettable as to prompt players to race through the area to escape to more interesting locales.<br />
<br />
It's not all a loss, of course. Some of the areas are quite scenic, and I do actually approve of the concept of setting up the conflict between Dwarves and Elves. If anything, the taste of ideas here almost begs for the area to be significantly expanded so that these concepts could be played out and the respective Elf and Dwarf habitations could be given more life.<br />
<br />
In the end, I recommend that visiting travelers, adventurers, and treasure-hunters pack a light lunch and plan to get the following seven activities done in a half-day's span.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/16/the-road-to-mordor-seven-things-to-do-in-ered-luin-before-you-d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Seven things to do in Ered Luin before you die</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/16/the-road-to-mordor-seven-things-to-do-in-ered-luin-before-you-d/">The Road to Mordor: Seven things to do in Ered Luin before you die</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XL Games</a> has added to the trickle of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archeage"><em>ArcheAge</em></a> information making its way to the West with a new race-related reveal this morning. The fantasy sandpark will feature eight distinct races, and though we've known their names for some time now, the new info drop is the first opportunity we've had to look at the Hariharans, Dwarves, and Warborn.<br />
<br />
Dwarves are -- as you might guess -- short, stubborn, and fond of metal. Hariharans aren't quite as exotic as the name suggests, given that they're one of two human races in the world of <em>ArcheAge</em>. In terms of lore, there's no love lost between Hariharans and their Nuian counterparts, and the former tend towards light weapons and armor while the latter favor heavy weapons and heavier mail.<br />

	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/the-daily-grind-are-tiny-races-persecuted/"><img alt="TDG: Asura" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/asura.jpg" /></a></div>
We've seen it across the MMO spectrum: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gnome/">Gnomes</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hobbit/">Hobbits</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/halfling/">Halflings</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dwarf/">Dwarves</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/asura/">Asura</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sprite/">Sprites</a>, Danny DeVito -- they're all ridiculed, mocked, and often targeted by other players driven to an inexplicable rage at the mere sight of them. Small races may be fiercely loved by a segment of the playerbase, but their presence serves to infuriate even more.<br />
<br />
So what is it about short races that drives good men and women to near-madness? Is it their tenacity at overcoming odds? Their propensity for kicking shins? Or their "ooh lookit the cute widdle <span style="font-style: italic;">fella</span><em>!</em>" adorability? It's hard to say, although this writer personally loves them. So chew on that, tallies!<br />
<br />
But that's not today's question; today's question is whether or not you think short races in MMOs have become persecuted, to an extent. Are they unfairly targeted just because of what they are, and if so, does that mean we've traded real-world prejudices for virtual ones?<br />
<br />

Last week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> released the concept art for one of its major bosses from the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rise-of-isengard/"><em>Rise of Isengard</em></a> expansion: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/14/meet-lotros-latest-big-bad-the-dragon-draigoch/">Draigoch</a>. With it came a number of appropriate "oohs" and "ahhs," and no doubt raiders began thinking up uses for a giant dragon skull in their homes. But there was also a crowd that popped out to cry foul about lore molestation -- that this was a blatant example of Turbine pandering to MMO players by including the expected dragons even when the lore shouldn't support it.<br />
<br />
A couple examples of quotes, first. <em>"Yet whatever way you cut this idea, how can you integrate another dragon into the story? Smaug was the last one of his kind,"</em> <a href="http://www.containsmoderateperil.com/">Contains Moderate Peril</a> complains. A commenter on our article <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/14/meet-lotros-latest-big-bad-the-dragon-draigoch/">sniped</a>, <em>"So Turbine's decided to entirely drop the pretense of sticking to the lore, then?"</em><br />
<br />
Ouch.<br />
<br />
As much as I am totally not attached to MMO lore in general, I feel like this might be a good time to both address this particular argument and also the larger one of Turbine's approach to Tolkien's world. Are giant dragons lore-breaking? Does Turbine simply not care about remaining faithful to source material? Do you have my decaf light mocha with cinnamon sprinkles?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/22/the-road-to-mordor-double-dragons/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Double dragons</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/22/the-road-to-mordor-double-dragons/">The Road to Mordor: Double dragons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 15:00:00 EST. Let's begin with a little personal history. Back in 2008, I decided to get into the blogging scene by jumping on board the latest MMO hotness -- in this case, <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>. As I was growing increasingly tired of <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> seemed to offer a refreshing alternative: a darker world full of brutal PvP and awesome new ideas. So I joined the elite ranks of bloggers (hey, stop laughing so hard) and spent the better part of two years jawing about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">Mythic's </a>latest fantasy project.<br />
<br />
And while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> was, in my opinion, a solid product, it certainly failed to live up to the extremely high expectations held by both the development team and the players. No matter how it turned out, I really enjoyed talking about <em>WAR</em>, especially in the days leading up to its launch.<br />
<br />
One of the first articles I ever wrote for my blog <a href="http://waaagh.wordpress.com/2008/04/21/the-warhammer-online-that-almost-was/">WAAAGH!</a> dealt with the first attempt to bring <em>Warhammer Online</em> into the MMO genre (as a fun aside, it was one of the first times <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/the-warhammer-that-almost-was/">I got my name on Massively</a>!). It's a "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/what-if/">what if?</a>" tale that's tantalizing to consider -- an entirely different studio, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/climax-online/">Climax Online</a>, creating a much darker version of Warhammer than we've ever seen online. The tale of the game's rise and fall (and subsequent rise and fall again) captivated me, and I wanted to expand my old article as part of our recent series into exploring MMOs canceled before their launch.<br />
<br />
So what if Climax had brought <em>Warhammer Online</em> to bear? Would it have eclipsed Mythic's vision or been its own animal? Hit the jump and let's dive into the pages of ancient history!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-climaxs-warhammer-onli/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: Climax's Warhammer Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-climaxs-warhammer-onli/">The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: Climax's Warhammer Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 10:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/patch-1.2/">patch 1.2</a> fading in the rearview mirror, <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a> players have turned their attention to the incoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/patch-1.3/">patch 1.3</a> due on June 22nd. Titled <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/waves-of-madness">Waves of Madness</a>, the update will kick off a new world event and add an additional tier of endgame content <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/trion-worlds-releases-new-trailer-screenshots-for-waves-of-madn/">in the form of an additional raid</a>.<br />
<br />
We got the opportunity to dive into 1.3 early at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2011/">E3</a>, all while a petite seven-foot-tall dev perched on our shoulder and gave us running commentary. Patch 1.3's crown jewel is a 20-person raid in the ancient fortress of Hammerknell, which was built by folks who thought it'd be a smashing idea to cram evil spirits into runes and then use that as the foundation. Sounds to us a lot like building a summer camp on top of a desecrated native burial ground, but we're sure these architects had good intentions.<br />
<br />
Surprise, surprise, the spirits started to ooze out into Hammerknell and tore up the place. To make matters worse, Hammerknell is the prison of a water dragon -- and the water plane started to come to its rescue. So the Dwarves decided to treat it like an illegal toxic dump by sealing up the fortress, whistling innocently, and conveniently forgetting it until another raid area was needed.<br />
<br />
But it's not as simple as just unlocking the front door and marching in to claim some loot! Hit the jump as we walk you through the process of down-and-dirty archaeology!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/e3-2011-hands-on-with-rifts-1-3-update/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2011: Hands on with RIFT's 1.3 update</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/e3-2011-hands-on-with-rifts-1-3-update/">E3 2011: Hands on with RIFT's 1.3 update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 17:30:00 EST. In less than a month, <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/index.html"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> adventurers will turn the page and begin a whole new chapter in the game's history. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster/">Frogster</a> has announced that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chapter-iv/">Chapter IV: Lands of Despair</a>, the latest content update for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a>, will go live on June 16th.<br />
<br />
If the name sounds foreboding, it's for a good reason: A horrible plague is spreading through the land, zombies are making a comeback, and Mad Lords are becoming all the rage. The update also includes a whopping four new zones, two additional dungeons, and an odd rivalry between the Dwarves and Rhinos.<br />
<br />
It's not too late to catch up on all of the details of this exciting update. <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/rtm1.jpg" style="border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
Last year, I spent a column giving my reflections, thoughts, and observations <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/the-road-to-mordor-a-look-back-at-volume-1/">on the entirety of Volume 1</a> of <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com/">Lord of the Rings Online's</a></em> epic storyline, and today I'd like to do the same for Volume 2. Since these stories are at the center of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>LotRO's</em></a> player experience, it's important to see how they function and hold up in today's increasingly story-centric MMO environment.<br />
<br />
I've gone through Volume 2 twice, once before the "solofication" of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/21/lord-of-the-rings-online-releases-update-2/">the recent update</a> and once after. The second journey was, by far, much more enjoyable since I didn't have to sit there for weeks hoping to find enough players on the same part of the Fellowship portions to continue the tale. Being able to go through it at my own pace was vastly more enjoyable, especially when I could dedicate huge chunks of time to knock out several chapters in one go.<br />
<br />
And this is a good thing, as this volume of the epic story not only gives you one of your legendary traits but greatly helps you build reputation toward a faction that will give you another one (the Iron Garrison Guards). As such, Volume 2 will continue to be an important part of any character's journey.<br />
<br />
So let's dig into this puppy (not... a literal puppy, you understand) and see what Volume 2 has to offer. If you haven't yet gone through this part of the epic story, beware: Here be spoilers!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/the-road-to-mordor-a-look-back-at-volume-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: A look back at Volume 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/06/the-road-to-mordor-a-look-back-at-volume-2/">The Road to Mordor: A look back at Volume 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 May 2011 14:30:00 EST. Testing for <a href="http://runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chapter-iv-lands-of-despair">Chapter IV: Lands of Despair</a> update continues on the game's closed beta servers, at least for two more days. According to a <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/news,id5444,chapter_iv_war_dwarves.html">news blurb</a> on the free-to-play fantasy title's website, the patch is nearing the public consumption stage, at which point the masses will thrill to a new instance, new bosses, and various other opportunities for us to use the word new.<br />
<br />
New hidden battlefields are also in the works, as well as "<em>two previously unknown races with a fierce and ancient rivalry</em>." Dwarves vs. Rhinos might not have the same appeal as pirates vs. ninjas, Yankees vs. Red Sox, or Democrats vs. Republicans, but nonetheless <a href="http://www.frogster.de/en/index.html">Frogster</a> and <a href="http://www.runewaker.com/en/index.php">Runewaker</a> have some story shenanigans up their respective sleeves for <em>Runes of Magic</em> lore fans. Check out the rather <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com/en/news,id5444,chapter_iv_war_dwarves.html">cryptic details</a> at the official <em>RoM</em> website.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/27/runes-of-magic-hints-at-more-chapter-iv-updates/">Runes of Magic hints at more Chapter IV updates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Apr 2011 15:00:00 EST. When I first left <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, it was early in 2008 and we were constrained to Eriador and Eriador alone. Angmar was the most dangerous spot on the map, level 50 was the cap, and getting your legendary traits was an almost inhuman feat. When I returned in 2010, I discovered I had missed out on the release of not one but two expansions and a huge amount of new content in the world. As a previous player, I felt as though everything I had known was completely different, and there was nothing as unknown or intriguing as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mines-of-moria/"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Expansions have a funny way of making or breaking MMOs, you see. They can exemplify some of the best qualities of the genre: they represent the persistent growing world; they give our characters new challenges to overcome; and they can introduce new features that significantly change how the game is played. Of course, they can damage the game's reputation by creating a worse endgame than before, by screwing up the good aspects of the game, or simply by being unpopular.<br />
<br />
So how does <em>Mines of Moria</em> fare two-plus years after its release? Today, I want to take a look back at what will probably be the single largest expansion that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>LotRO</em></a> will ever see and examine how its purpose has changed from 2008 to 2011. Also, we'll probably make fun of Dwarves.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/the-road-to-mordor-re-evaluating-moria/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Re-evaluating Moria</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/the-road-to-mordor-re-evaluating-moria/">The Road to Mordor: Re-evaluating Moria</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 13:00:00 EST. Today marks the beginning of the end: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/rifts-telara-the-merciless-open-beta-starts-february-15th/">the final beta event</a> for <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a>, which also happens to be the first open beta as well. To kick off this six-day event, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> <a href="http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?67066-Beta-7-Patch-Notes-2-14-11&amp;p=1053852&amp;viewfull=1">posted another set of lengthy patch notes</a> as the team feverishly works to refine the product before its February 24th head start. From new emotes to UI improvements, there's a little something for everyone here.<br />
<br />
Probably the largest change overall is with the souls; a good deal of the game's 32 PvE souls received tune-ups and adjustments. Guild features were given a few passes as the team added a few new perks and replaced a number of guild banners. Trion also implemented in-game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/twitter/">Twitter</a> functionality, allowing players to tweet their in-game statuses and screenshots to the world.<br />
<br />
And for the always-vain Dwarves, well, it looks as though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT</em></a> finally got that latest shipment of Botox: <em>"Male Dwarves no longer look so... weathered. Current male Dwarf characters will probably appear to have lost a few years off their face somewhere."</em><br />

Elves. Dwarves. Humans. Halflings. Gnomes. Hobbits. Dark elves. High elves. Half-elves. Wood elves. Keebler elves. Elvish impersonators.<br />
<br />
Are you as tired as I am of the endless regurgitation of stock fantasy races in our MMOs? It seems inconceivable (<em>I do not think that means what you think it means</em>) for a new fantasy title to come out without most of the above races infesting the character creation screen with moldy unoriginality, putrescent stank, and dusty boredom.<br />
<br />
That's why today I'm standing up to praise 10 MMOs that dare to go above and beyond the stale by offering mostly unique and different races than the rest of the market. Hopefully future games will learn from their example and throw off the yokes of generic oppression to give us something bold and refreshing!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/the-perfect-ten-best-non-traditional-mmo-fantasy-races/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Best non-traditional MMO fantasy races</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/the-perfect-ten-best-non-traditional-mmo-fantasy-races/">The Perfect Ten: Best non-traditional MMO fantasy races</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 14:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a> beta testers are sharpening their knives and stringing their bows in anticipation of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/03/trion-announces-next-rift-beta-event-showcasing-warfronts/">this weekend's PvP beta event</a>, <a href="http://www.trionworlds.com/en/">Trion Worlds</a> continues to reveal the true scope of Telara. The team is proud to present the latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT</em></a> dungeon: Runic Descent.<br />
<br />
Runic Descent challenges teams of five players to band together and cull the bad weeds of a twisted garden that sits beside the ancient Dwarven city of Hammerknell. In so doing, the players will aid the Dwarves' attempt to reclaim their heritage while uprooting world-corrupting magic. And if there's madcap looting in the process? Nobody will complain.<br />
<br />
As it has with all of <em>RIFT's</em> other dungeon and zone reveals, Trion isn't skimping on the backstory either. Hit the jump for the tale of Runic Descent, as well as a few brand-new screenshots of the instance.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/gardening-gone-bad-rifts-runic-descent-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gardening gone bad: RIFT's Runic Descent revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/gardening-gone-bad-rifts-runic-descent-revealed/">Gardening gone bad: RIFT's Runic Descent revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 09:00:00 EST. All may seem quiet on the MMO front, but if you turn your eyes to <a href="http://www.runescape.com/title.ws"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, you'll see a bustling explosion of activity with the advent of January. <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/behind-the-scenes---january-3">Three new pieces of content</a> are available in the game, including a new high-level boss and a Nordic-themed wolf.<br />
<br />
If politics are your thing -- Dwarven politics, to be precise -- then you'll want to check out a brand-new quest that tasks players with discovering just who is the rightful king of the Dwarves in Keldagrim. It won't be a bloodless affair, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jagex/">Jagex</a> promises to make it worth the player's effort. <br />
<br />
Maybe you want to test your mettle against a god? Then jump into the <a href="http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/God_Wars_Dungeon">God Wars dungeon</a> to face off against Nex, a powerful boss that boasts 15 unique combat moves. If you find yourself triumphant -- doubtful, really, but it is technically possible -- then you'll enjoy an array of coveted level 80 gear for your character.<br />
<br />
Or perhaps you're in the mood for a hunt, in which case <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runescape"><em>RuneScape</em></a> will send you on the trail of the Hati Wolf, a seasonal boss that drops special XP-boosting gloves.<br />
<br />

They may be short and extraordinarily hairy, but across all fantasy realms, Dwarves have built a reputation as a hardworking race, masters of both ale and craftsmanship. In <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>Rift: Planes of Telara</em></a>, the Dwarves are a fallen race, even though it was by their hands that the great cities were built.<br />
<br />
In this exclusive dev diary, Trion Worlds lays out the foundation for the stocky, proud race from the beginning of time up to the start of the game's events. Hit the jump to discover how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift"><em>Rift's</em></a> dwarves aren't just a stereotype, but a rich and complex people to whom the world owes a great debt.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/11/exclusive-rift-dev-diary-unveils-the-lives-and-times-of-dwarves/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exclusive Rift dev diary unveils the lives and times of Dwarves</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/11/exclusive-rift-dev-diary-unveils-the-lives-and-times-of-dwarves/">Exclusive Rift dev diary unveils the lives and times of Dwarves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. The focus of the next <em><a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/">EverQuest</a> </em>expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/underfoot"><em>Underfoot</em></a> is the Plane of Underfoot and its cavernous areas, which the god Brell Serilis created and filled with inhabitants. <a href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/news_article.vm?id=51634">An update on the EverQuest Players website</a> has given us an early look at one zone from the new expansion, "Brell's Rest". Apparently, the most devout followers of Brell are brought to Brell's Rest upon their demise. Since a healthy mix of races pay homage to the Duke of Below, this means that the area is home to quite a few different factions, including dwarves, gnomes, gnolls and kobolds. <br /><br />While the dwarves and gnomes tend to live a peaceful life in the Shining City section of Brell's Rest, the gnolls and kobolds have traditionally enjoyed ripping each other apart for all eternity. However, in recent times the gnolls have begun to withdraw from their beloved skirmishes, whispering about "The Destroyer" and "The Undying One". That's all we're going to find out for now, but it sounds like an interesting quest-line to look into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/everquests-underfoot-expansion-pushed-back-to-december/">when the expansion is released</a>. The zone is also said to feature an arena for some good old-fashioned warrior games. Along with this chunk of lore, the EverQuest Players site had a handful of Brell's Rest screenshots to show off. We've put them all together for easy viewing in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/everquest-underfoot/">the gallery</a> below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/">EverQuest: Underfoot</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366508"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation2_1680x1050_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation" title="The Foundation" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation6_1680x1050_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation" title="The Foundation" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation9_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" title="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366504"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation18_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" title="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366501"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation21_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" title="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/21/a-look-at-brells-rest-from-everquest-underfoot/">A look at Brell's Rest from EverQuest: Underfoot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 11:00:00 EST. Humans and Pixies -- or faeries if you like -- of both genders are currently available in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> upcoming <em><a href="http://www.freerealms.com">Free Realms</a></em>. Some of us have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/28/the-digital-continuum-my-only-problem-with-free-realms/">already jokingly suggested what we'd want in future races</a>, but it seemed like a reasonable enough question to ask those interested in playing the game what they would want to see.<br /><br />Certainly there are all sorts of other things that could be added to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Free-Realms/">Free Realms</a></em>, most of them being new jobs. And while those are without a doubt coming, we'll leave that topic for another day and another grind.<br /><br />So what's it gonna be dear Massively readers? More fantasy ala Dwarves and Elves, or would you rather race karts, raise pets, cook food and fight Robgoblins (yes, that is what they're called) as a robotic penguin person? Speaking of Robgoblins, there's always playing as baddies like them or trolls and such, too!<br /><br />So many choices.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/19/the-daily-grind-what-race-would-you-add-to-free-realms/">The Daily Grind: What race would you add to Free Realms?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 19 Apr 2009 08:00:00 EST. The new crafting instances are certainly a big part of the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lotro-book-2.7">Volume 2, Book 7</a> update, which is why Turbine has released several new screens showing off the content. We're fairly certain that we're not missing the point when we get excited about shiny, pretty swords and images of a Dwarf mining with a mighty pick axe.<br /><br />That's normal, right? We're not entirely certain, but it seems like the kind of thing a balanced person would get all hot and bothered over. In any case, you can find plenty of sweetly sized images to salivate over (or is that still just us?) in our gallery just below. Enjoy!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/">LotRO Volume 2: Book 7</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/several-new-crafting-instance-screenshots-for-lord-of-the-rings/">Several new crafting instance screenshots for Lord of the Rings Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 16:00:00 EST. <a href="www.warhammeronline.com" style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</a> players are in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/test-server-patch-notes-for-warhammers-bitter-rivals-event-re/">midst of the Bitter Rivals</a> live event, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/the-daily-grind-what-excites-you-most-about-wars-call-to-arms/">plus another big new patch</a>. I'm going to guess that it probably took a lot of development muscle to get the Black Guard, Knight of the Blazing Sun, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/massively-re-arms-for-war-slayer/">Slayer</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/massively-re-arms-for-war-meet-da-choppa/">Choppa</a> in a fun, playable shape. Not to mention the improvements to open RvR, Scenarios, PvE and general quality of life fixes.<br /><br />I have no doubt that the east coast developer has the next several patches planned out to some degree. Nonetheless, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/" style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</a> and its community are at a development crossroads -- and so today I'm going to explore a few possibilities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/the-digital-continuum-beyond-warhammer-online-patch-1-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Beyond Warhammer Online patch 1.2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/07/the-digital-continuum-beyond-warhammer-online-patch-1-2/">The Digital Continuum: Beyond Warhammer Online patch 1.2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 07 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. We appreciate a developer who goes back to earlier content and improves upon it. And to that end, our appreciation of those who go back to the very beginning knows no bounds. That's why we're quite pleased with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> for rolling out their "New Player Experience" changes with the free <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lotro-book-2.7">Volume II: Book 7</a> update to <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em>.<br /><br />If you'd like to know exactly what all the changes are going to be about then <a href="http://www.lotro.com/gameinfo/devdiaries/340-developer-diary-lotro-book-7-new-player-experience">take a look at this developer diary</a> focusing on the Dwarf and Elf starting zones. Much of the changes are quality of life stuff, like reducing travel times and removing all newbie instances to avoid any load screens. Turbine's also added quest rewards for specific races and classes, and even tossed in dyes as rewards to alleviate the tedium of seeing equipment clones running all over the place.<br /><br />These changes (and others) are all great improvements. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/lotro-releases-new-pts-and-preliminary-book-7-patch-notes/">With the new quest tracking system</a> coming at the same time, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> is shaping up to be an all-around friendlier MMO experience.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/getting-back-to-basics-with-lotros-new-player-experience/">Getting back to basics with LotRO's new player experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.lotro.com/component/content/article/339-concept-art-gallery">newest concept art to hit</a> from the Volume II: Book 7: Leaves of L&oacute;rien update for <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> features an astonishingly beautiful Galadriel's Court. Does it surprise anyone else that elves are all about visually stunning architecture? While the Dwarves are primarily concerned with size and how much gold was involved, the Elves seem to focus on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/04/lotro-book-7-dev-diary-lothlorien-quest-notes/">making everything curvy and elegant</a>. It's like an M.C. I love <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Free-Realms/">Free Realms</a></em>, so don't get me wrong when I say I've finally found a problem with it. What's that problem, you (hypothetically) ask? It's full of regular people and faeries, and what manly guy wants that?<br /><br />No, sir, not me. There's certainly nothing wrong with a man who prefers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/1369667/full/">to flutter about on dainty wings</a>, or a man who just wants to be a 'Regular Joe' -- but what of the rest who just want to express their inner macho man? I think we need some representation!<br /><br />That's why I've done all the creative footwork for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> and thought up a bunch of great concepts for manly races to add into <em>Free Realms</em>. That way, when hairy manly men log into the game after a hard day of sweating and lifting heavy things, they'll feel right at home.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/28/the-digital-continuum-my-only-problem-with-free-realms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: My only problem with Free Realms</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/28/the-digital-continuum-my-only-problem-with-free-realms/">The Digital Continuum: My only problem with Free Realms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 28 Feb 2009 16:00:00 EST. We've known that it was likely <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/one-of-warhammers-cut-classes-wont-be-coming-back/">wouldn't be bringing back one of the original</a> melee DPS classes to Greenskins and Dwarves. Of course that doesn't mean the two races won't even have a new class -- as evidenced by the mind games Mythic is now <a href="http://www.keenandgraev.com/?p=1843">playing with the <em>Warhammer Online</em> community</a>.<br /><br />The box contains orange hair dye, a hair trimming kit and the ominous note that says, "More to come 1-29-09" How is this significant? Take a look at some official Warhammer Dwarven lore:<br /><br /><em>"A notable aspect to Dwarf culture is the Slayer Oath. A Dwarf who has suffered a great shame, loss, or humiliation will dye his hair and beard orange, and cut it into a Mohawk using pig grease to stick it in place."</em><br /><br />Was this a little bit blunt? Maybe, but we don't mind, since it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/17/mythic-and-kongregate-team-up-for-warhammer-online-contest/">got us excited</a> for a possibly very awesome new class for <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em>. We only hope that when the Greenskins get their melee DPS class it's as interesting as this announcement.<br /><hr />

<em>Welcome to Know Your LotRO Lore, a new weekly column here at Massively showcasing the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's world as it intersects with Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online.<br /><br /></em>In last week's Know Your LotRO Lore, we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/know-your-lotro-lore-the-elves/">discussed the Elves</a> and their origins in Tolkien's Middle-earth. This week we're going to continue along in that tradition by covering the <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Race:Dwarf">Dwarven race</a>, their origins and impact in Tolkien's works and <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>.<br /><br />As with the Elves, Tolkien did not invent the Dwarf, but he did popularize and redefine the term, beginning with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hobbit"><em>The Hobbit</em></a>. The plural "dwarves" was also popularized by Tolkien, as it was more commonly known before that as "dwarfs", which now refers mainly to real people affected by dwarfism. This can get tricky when political correctness comes into play, but as it pertains to this article, we will focus purely on the mythical race. Follow along through the link below for more on Tolkien's Dwarves.<br /><br />

<em>Welcome to Know Your </em>LotRO<em> Lore, a new weekly column here at Massively showcasing the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's world as it intersects with Turbine's </em>Lord of the Rings Online.<br /><br />Long ago, the Dwarves were numerous and mighty. This was an age when the Elves, Men and Dwarves lived in harmony, the <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Lore:Mithril">mithril</a> was plentiful and the Orcs were driven back to Sauron's lair. This was the end of the Second Age: the age of Khazad-d&ucirc;m. To first understand Khazad-d&ucirc;m, we must start at the very beginning.<br /><br />Early in the First Age, "long before the creation of the Sun and Moon," according to Tolkien, <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Lore:Durin_I_the_Deathless">Durin "The Deathless"</a> had awoken at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Gundabad">Mount Gundabad</a>, far to the north in the Misty Mountains. His growing clan of Longbeards eventually moved southward down the vales of Anduin, being driven out of Gundabad due to constant attacks from the Orcs of Morgoth. It was during this journey that he discovered "a glen of shadows between two great arms of the mountains." He followed a series of short waterfalls down into an oval lake, which he believed to have a magical quality. The glow of this lake and the reflection of stars in the water led Durin to believe it was a sign, and he went on to name it the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirrormere">Mirrormere</a>. It is near this area where Durin chose to create his ultimate stronghold: The Dwarrowdelf, or Khazad-d&ucirc;m in his native tongue.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/know-your-lotro-lore-khazad-dum-and-the-origins-of-moria/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Know Your LotRO Lore: Khazad-dum and the origins of Moria</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/know-your-lotro-lore-khazad-dum-and-the-origins-of-moria/">Know Your LotRO Lore: Khazad-dum and the origins of Moria</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST. If the immensity of the new underground zones featured in the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mines-of-moria">Mines of Moria</a></em> expansion hasn't sunk in just yet, the newest set of screens should help clear any fog of uncertainty. While no exciting new mobs or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/12/mines-of-morias-cat-goat-is-out-of-the-bag/">strange-yet-endearing goat mounts</a> seem to have popped up in these screens, there's still plenty to gawk at auspiciously.<br /><br />One image features a rather large set of stairs that would cause even Rocky Balboa to faint if he tried to run up them in a triumphant montage finisher. So the images may not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/01/massivelys-exclusive-mines-of-moria-video-tour/">be packed with high action like our exclusive video</a>, but if you use your imagination they can entertain for minutes on end. You may even waste a whole quarter of an hour with them, especially if you're into Dwarven architecture. And after you're done with that, go check out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-mines-of-moria-dev-tour/1064866/full/">our exclusive screenshot tour</a> of the expansion!<br /><br />

I've given <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/09/the-digital-continuum-dark-elf-days-in-war/">my thoughts on the Dark Elf section</a> of <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a>, but now that the whole NDA is lifted I can finally speak about my experience with the beta as a whole. I've been in it for a long time. A really long time, in fact. We're talking about, well, since the thing started. Which gives me something more to say than the typical tester talking about this game. In my time interacting as a member of the beta community with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mythic/">Mythic</a> -- concerning <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/">Warhammer Online</a>, of course -- I think I've seen more progress made on any MMO in the span of about a year than I have in any other in beta. And I've been in a lot of them.<br /><br />So what's the big deal? New MMOs are always facing the issue of going up against <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft's</a> several years of polishing. Everyone has always wondered what it would take to deal with that issue, too. Mythic seems to have decided it will take raw, unadulterated determination. The kind that a child displays when presented with the opportunity to have a new toy. It also helps to have a license that Blizzard themselves once attempted to acquire because of its depth. Ironic? Only if <span style="font-style: italic;">WAR</span> really does take a big chug out of the <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a> milkshake.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/the-digital-continuum-memoirs-of-a-war-beta-tester/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Memoirs of a WAR beta tester</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/23/the-digital-continuum-memoirs-of-a-war-beta-tester/">The Digital Continuum: Memoirs of a WAR beta tester</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Aug 2008 11:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><em><a href="http://www.playsaga.com/">SAGA</a></em> (not to be confused with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saga_%28band%29">Saga</a>, who gave us the immortal "On the Loose") is an MMORTS -- massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game. While there are few enough of these on the market -- making its very existence worthy of approbation -- we thought it would be worth taking a closer look, to offer up an opinion of our first couple of hours into gameplay. Thus, this <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/first-impressions/">First Impressions</a> post.<br /><br />Remember: this is not a guide, nor was this in any way influenced by the development studio. Diet <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a>: same great taste, less content. Is it bad that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/ea-mythic-back-to-the-original-mythic-entertainment-name/">the recently re-branded</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment/">Mythic Entertainment</a> just <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/mark-jacobs-announces-major-features-cut-from-warhammer-online/">cut out a large portion</a> of our <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/">Warhammer Online</a> pie and put it in the deep freeze? Well it's certainly not good when a developer cuts content they've been talking about publicly for so long, especially when launch is only three or four months away. I've already written about why this MMO ode to classic tabletop trappings <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/08/the-digital-continuum-a-fork-in-the-road-for-war/">shouldn't be shoved onto shelves half-baked</a> and I still feel like I'd rather see a delay than see so much content cut. While there have been plenty of delays already, that doesn't mean more would have been intolerable. <br /><br />I'm going to try and take an honest look at what the removal of four capital cities and four classes means for <span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span>. I will admit that when the news first hit, a vile and seemingly ancient sort of anger <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/articles/showentry.php?e=76">began to boil up inside my lungs</a>. It was the onset of some form of draconian rage at the removal of so much content that I'd been personally invested in as a future player. I never really got into Chaos and planned on playing Dark Elves, but now a large part of that content is gone. At first I felt anger and confusion towards Mythic. It wasn't until after that initial knee-jerk anger passed that I was able to give some real thought to their choice and was able to consider the varied consequences.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/the-digital-continuum-diet-war/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Diet WAR</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/the-digital-continuum-diet-war/">The Digital Continuum: Diet WAR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Jul 2008 15:30:00 EST. Not keen on making yet another "Thorinn", "Duurin" or "Gihmli"? Have you already chosen one of these unfortunate names and are looking for a change? This guide will walk you through choosing the perfect name for your dwarf. If you are a role-player or simply confused about finding a surname, this is a great way to learn a bit about dwarf culture, language, and names.<a href="http://www.uib.no/people/hnohf/khuzdul.htm"><br /><br />Khuzdul</a> is the language of the dwarves. When a dwarf is born he is granted a name by his parents in this language. However, the dwarves are extremely secretive about their language. Their Khuzdul name is usually known only to themselves and their immediate friends and family, and therefore is rarely shared with anyone. If you are a role-player you may choose a name formed from this language for your dwarf, but keep in mind that out in the world of <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Lore:Middle-earth">Middle Earth</a> he (or she) will go by a different name meant for outsiders and everyday use. A dwarf wouldn't be caught dead using his private name with an outsider, and neither should you!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/29/blogging-into-mordor-finding-the-perfect-name-for-your-dwarf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Blogging into Mordor: Finding the perfect name for your Dwarf</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/29/blogging-into-mordor-finding-the-perfect-name-for-your-dwarf/">Blogging into Mordor: Finding the perfect name for your Dwarf</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 29 Jun 2008 12:00:00 EST. Forgetting that, today is a special post, its a game close to my heart, and it isn't a review. It's <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> folks; there is no need to review it, what do you want me to say? MMO mounts come in an almost endless variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and types. From the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/mounts/kodos.html">mighty Kodo</a> to the <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.playonline.com%2Fff11us%2F&amp;ei=kLZCSIGeD5Si8ATVney7CA&amp;usg=AFQjCNGUK6Eg7L2-0c8FYmWSBK7yZGfTzw&amp;sig2=cr9q4okvRXEfKZvnxD0KVw">agile Chocobo</a>, there's a generally accepted level of convention when it comes to mounts. They're usually organic (or at least they <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/mounts/mechanostriders.html">replicate being organic</a>), walk on legs, and have some way for players to sit astride them. Mounts that buck this trend are really few and far between.<br /><br />So you can imagine our surprise then when Avien over at the Warhammer Alliance forums posted several links to the new Dwarven mounts (also featured in the newest <em>Warhammer</em> newsletter) for <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> -- <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37972">in the form of personal gyrocopters</a>. They're certainly not what we would have guessed would be their mount if you had asked, but thinking about it, there's something so distinctly<em> Dwarven</em> about the idea of strapping a gyrocopter to your back and flitting about a battlefield. In any case, the concept art is extremely amusing both if you plan to make a stuntie yourself or if you aim to have them fall at your feet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/01/wars-dwarf-mounts-are-real-head-turners/">WAR's Dwarf mounts are real head turners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. It's been just about a year since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> launched. Even though there's a lot of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/connect08-to-have-exclusive-in-game-lotro-titles/">interesting</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/29/connect-08-attendees-to-receive-in-game-lotro-cloak/">stuff </a>happening at Connect08 later this month and a one-year anniversary coming as well, that doesn't mean <em>LotRO </em>players aren't getting a cool, love-filled spring festival. So worry not, players can expect some very interesting events to take their mind off the encroaching evil from the edge of the world. We've got the beef, so to speak, after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/springtime-set-to-invade-hearts-of-lotro-players/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Springtime set to invade hearts of LotRO players</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/springtime-set-to-invade-hearts-of-lotro-players/">Springtime set to invade hearts of LotRO players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 16:30:00 EST. Here is the second half of our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">Lord of the Rings Online</span></a> guide to races, which covers some tips and tricks to help players starting out in Middle-earth and those who've been wandering its lands as well. As we said with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/choosing-your-race-in-middle-earth-man-and-elf/">first</a> half of our guide, its purpose isn't to say which race is the best pick for which class --but to just give some insight. So without further delay, lets get to everyone's favorite cranky, stout race -- Dwarves!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/choosing-your-race-in-middle-earth-dwarf-and-hobbit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choosing your race in Middle-earth: Dwarf and Hobbit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/choosing-your-race-in-middle-earth-dwarf-and-hobbit/">Choosing your race in Middle-earth: Dwarf and Hobbit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 16:00:00 EST.
