	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/ccp-releases-welcome-to-new-eden-video-for-dust-514/"><img alt="DUST 514 - one universe, one war" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/33e4cdust-514-future-proof-ps4.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has released a new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>-focused developer video. The clip is titled Welcome to New Eden, so if you're looking for any new tidbits about the upcoming sci-fi MMOFPS, you probably won't find them here.<br />
<br />
If you're a <em>DUST</em> newb, on the other hand, this one's for you, as it gives you a rundown on what sets the game apart from its legions of FPS competitors. In a nutshell, the difference-maker is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and the way that <em>DUST</em> integrates with a pre-existing game, economy, and playerbase on a scale that is basically unheard of.<br />
<br />
As producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thomas-farrer">Thomas Farrer</a> puts it, "<em>DUST</em> is different pretty much by virtue of what it really is. <em>DUST</em> is a persistent FPS on PlayStation 3. Not only is it directly linked to <em>EVE Online</em>, a PC MMO, it's set directly within the <em>EVE Online</em> universe." Warp past the cut for a look at the full clip.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/ccp-releases-welcome-to-new-eden-video-for-dust-514/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP releases Welcome to New Eden video for DUST 514</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/ccp-releases-welcome-to-new-eden-video-for-dust-514/">CCP releases Welcome to New Eden video for DUST 514</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. Did you drop your name into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games'</a> hat as a potential tester for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a>? Then tomorrow might be a lovely day for you, as the studio is emailing out the first round of closed beta keys for registered participants after a short delay from its original key-handing-out schedule.<br />
<br />
It is unknown how many keys will be sent out and to whom. Last month, CCP told <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2012">Fanfest </a>attendees <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/redeem-your-eve-fanfest-code-for-dust-514-beta-access/">that they would be among the first to test</a> the anticipated MMOFPS. <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/article/72271/psn-voucher-distribution-announcement">The <em>DUST 514</em> website states</a> that the studio is sending out Fanfest keys first and keys to standard registered players "soon after."<br />
<br />
To celebrate the release of the closed beta keys, <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/article/72332/dust-514-psn-code-distribution-delayed">CCP is holding a "special event"</a> over the weekend. The details of this event are forthcoming.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: CCP has confirmed that beta registration <a href="http://www.dust514.com/beta">has begun today</a> and that <em>EVE</em> players and Fanfest attendees will get first pick.]</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/dust-514-handing-out-first-beta-keys-tomorrow/">DUST 514 handing out first beta keys tomorrow [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. Last week I celebrated <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/29/eve-evolved-four-years-of-eve-evolved/">the fourth anniversary</a> of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a> column with a competition to win one of two 30-day pilot's licenses. Congratulations to winners Dong Yi and Atrameides Denard, whose prizes have been contracted in-game. Today <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> itself <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/eve-online-celebrates-nine-years-of-internet-spaceships/">turns nine years old</a>, and so this week's EVE Evolved column takes a look back at the top <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> stories of the year. It's been a rollercoaster of a year for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a>, with the infamous monoclegate scandal hitting subscriptions hard during the summer and only recently starting to recover.<br />
<br />
The drama kicked off as the much-touted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incarna"><em>Incarna</em></a> expansion drew close and CCP revealed that it would contain no multiplayer elements and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/ccp-bringing-vanity-item-store-new-currency-to-eve/">would introduce a microtransaction store</a> for vanity items. Players didn't seem to mind the cash shop as long as it contained only vanity items, and CCP had previously promised that microtransactions would be limited to those types of items. When the <em>Incarna</em> expansion finally launched and players got a first-hand look at the cash shop, however, it became apparent that something was fundamentally wrong.<br />
<br />
In this week's EVE Evolved, I look back at the top <em>EVE</em> stories of the year, from the incredible videos and scams to the story of how CCP brought <em>EVE Online</em> back from the brink of disaster.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/06/eve-evolved-nine-years-of-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Nine years of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/06/eve-evolved-nine-years-of-eve-online/">EVE Evolved: Nine years of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. The death of the subscription model has been greatly exaggerated, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a>. This view isn't terribly surprising if you consider the fact that the company's fortunes ebb and flow with sub-based <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. What is somewhat surprising is the frankness with which <em>EVE</em> producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-lander">Jon Lander</a> talks about the free-to-play mania that's gripped western dev studios in recent years.<br />
<br />
"You look at the companies who did go free-to-play. They retrofitted it on, and that was because their games were failing. They didn't care about the tiny nugget of players who were still playing, because they knew they would get a huge number of other players and it would be more profitable," Lander told <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/03/ccp-on-the-death-of-subscription-mmos-its-simply-not-the-case/">PC Gamer</a>, before going on to explain how such a retrofit would kill <em>EVE's</em> essence.<br />
<br />
Overall quality and the desire for long-term play also factor into a title's business model, Lander says. "If you have a really good game [...] and people want to spend a long time playing it, not like a month or two but like <em>EVE</em> players for years at a time, they're prepared to pay a subscription fee for a good quality gaming experience."<br />
<br />
He also mentions <em>EVE's</em> PLEX system, which allows for real-world money to be injected into the <em>EVE</em> economy sans shady third-party brokers. And of course, CCP is experimenting with free-to-play via its new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> shooter, which Lander says was built from the ground up for the new business model. It's not necessarily the future, though. "People say the subscription MMO is dead. I fundamentally disagree with that. It's simply not the case," he says. Hit the jump for video excerpts from the interview.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/eve-producer-f2p-converts-were-failing-subs-still-viable/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE producer: F2P converts were 'failing,' subs still viable</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/eve-producer-f2p-converts-were-failing-subs-still-viable/">EVE producer: F2P converts were 'failing,' subs still viable</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. "It's not our game," says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-lander">Jon Lander</a>. He's talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, and he makes no bones about the firm's role in the ongoing internet spaceship drama that is New Eden. "We're the janitors of it; we sweep up and make sure the power's still running and whatever, but it's their game. <em>EVE</em> is the sum history of their personal interactions, and we don't own that. We just look after it."<br />
<br />
The "their" Lander refers to is the game's playerbase, of course, and he tells <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-05-03-ccp-games-embracing-the-law-of-unintended-consequences">GamesIndustry.biz</a> that despite the turmoil of the last 12 months, the <em>EVE</em> property is none the worse for wear (and in fact it may be getting stronger due to a design re-focus and the imminent arrival of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>).<br />
<br />
Ultimately the interview brings no new information to the table, but it does serve as a handy recap of recent <em>EVE</em> events. It also offers up more than a few juicy quotes from both Lander and lead game designer Kristoffer "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-soundwave">CCP Soundwave</a>" Touborg.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/new-ccp-interview-recaps-recent-eve-turmoil-looks-forward/">New CCP interview recaps recent EVE turmoil, looks forward</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. On <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/27/eve-evolved-controversy-over-removal-of-shuttles/">April 27th, 2008</a>, I joined the Massively crew and published the first edition of a new weekly column dedicated to the world of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. It's hard to believe that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a> column is now <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/24/eve-evolved-three-years-of-eve-evolved/">four</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/18/eve-evolved-two-year-anniversary/">years</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/20/eve-evolved-a-year-of-eve-evolved-5-most-popular-articles/">old</a>, spanning nine major expansions and predating <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a>' transformation into an industry giant with three games in development. Since the column's first crude scribbling about shuttles, I've written over 200 in-depth articles, guides, stories, and opinion pieces. With its free expansions and iterative updates, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> is a rapidly changing game that provides a constant supply of things to write about.<br />
<br />
To celebrate the fourth anniversary of the column, I'm giving away two <a href="http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/30_days_Concord_Pilot_License_Extension">30-day Pilot's License EXtensions</a> to two lucky readers. To enter the competition, leave a comment stating which EVE Evolved article from this year is your favourite, and why it's your favorite, and what topic you'd like to see covered in the coming year. You will need an active <em>EVE</em> account to claim the prize, so be sure to include a character name with your comment if you want to be able to win a prize. If you're not comfortable with giving out your character name, use an alternate character or sign up a new trial account. The winners' names will be revealed in next week's column.<br />
<br />
In this week's EVE Evolved, I look back at some of the highlights from the column's fourth year.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/29/eve-evolved-four-years-of-eve-evolved/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Four years of EVE Evolved</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/29/eve-evolved-four-years-of-eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved: Four years of EVE Evolved</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 29 Apr 2012 18:00:00 EST. Oh, <a href="http://www.tribesascend.com"><em>Tribes: Ascend</em></a>, if only you were an MMO.<br />
<br />
Actually, wait a minute. When I think on it, if <a href="http://www.hirezstudios.com">Hi-Rez Studios</a>' new free-to-play sci-fi shooter were an MMO, I probably wouldn't like it as much. There's something to be said for frequent updates and instant gameplay gratification, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tribes-ascend"><em>Tribes</em></a> provides those things (and more) in spades.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/the-firing-line-five-reasons-to-love-tribes-ascend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: Five reasons to love Tribes: Ascend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/the-firing-line-five-reasons-to-love-tribes-ascend/">The Firing Line: Five reasons to love Tribes: Ascend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> is being rather selective with its invites to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514's</em></a> ongoing beta test. That said, if you attended Fanfest 2012 last month, you can now redeem a closed beta voucher code and get on with the sci-fi sandbox fragging.<br />
<br />
You'll need one of the code cards given out at Fanfest, and you'll need to enter the numbers on the new <a href="http://www.dust514.com/redeem">redeem page</a> at the <em>DUST 514</em> website. Once you've done so, you'll be placed in a queue to receive your actual beta code via email. Most FPS titles feature static mission areas, says <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cmdrwang">CmdrWang</a>. Over time, players memorize layouts, spawn locations, and objectives because nothing ever changes. Not so in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>-based MMOFPS.<br />
<br />
CCP is bringing its sci-fi sandbox design chops to the shooter space, and the company has broken down its dynamic battlefield concept in a new <em>DUST</em> <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/04/26/how-dynamic-battlefields-take-shape-in-dust-514/">dev blog</a>. Each <em>DUST</em> planet will be divided into separate districts, which are basically large territories that contain resources and infrastructure needed to control the world. While planetary landscapes remain static, these districts can vary quite a bit from one deployment to the next based on what has happened in previous engagements and based on player placement decisions in regard to battlefield equipment.<br />
<br />
Memorizing the maps won't give you a huge advantage, CmdrWang says, because you may find a new choke point or structure clogging up your previous short-cut. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> recently said that it would take seven years to max out every skill in its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> MMOFPS. If you want to see what that improbable feat looks like on a <em>DUST</em> character screen, head to fansite <a href="http://www.dust514.org/home/item/dust514-character-sheet-skills-and-market-dissection">DUST514.org</a> (or check out the video clip behind the cut).<br />
<br />
"Much like in real life, and in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, we don't expect that a player will master all of these skills," explains CCP marketing guru <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/david-reid">David Reid</a>. Specialization is the name of <em>DUST 514's</em> skill game, and Reid says that most players will probably choose a few skills and "get really, really good at them."<br />
<br />
<em>DUST</em> isn't just about skills, though. It's an MMO, and an MMO means gear, so the game will launch with upwards of a thousand items (the vast majority of which can be lost in battle). How do you manage and equip these items? Through the fitting screen, of course, and today's video gives us a good look at the system in action.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/ccp-shows-off-seven-years-of-dust-514-skill-training/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP shows off seven years of DUST 514 skill training</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/ccp-shows-off-seven-years-of-dust-514-skill-training/">CCP shows off seven years of DUST 514 skill training</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST. Fansite DUST514.org has the best <a href="http://www.dust514.org/home/item/your-first-steps-in-dust-514">introductory info dump</a> we've seen to date regarding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> MMOFPS.<br />
<br />
The sci-fi shooter is, of course, set in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> New Eden universe, but how exactly does the new player experience look and feel? That question is answered at length on the site's latest blog post. Dropsuits and dropsuit fittings are covered in detail, as is <em>DUST's</em> complex skill system.<br />
<br />
Also noteworthy are the tidbits relating to missions and PvP. <em>DUST</em>, like <em>EVE</em>, starts newbs off in high-security space, where there are plenty of NPC corporations willing to hand out mercenary contracts. These aren't just bot matches, though, as you'll go up against other players who have chosen to work for competing corporations. The blog also delves into <em>DUST's</em> version of blueprint originals and blueprint copies as they relate to gear acquisition, not to mention a host of other interesting topics.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/fansite-details-dust-514-newbie-experience/">Fansite details DUST 514 newbie experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 12:30:00 EST. Dude, there was a ton of big shooter news this week!<br />
<br />
I mean, this isn't terribly unusual, particularly since the genre is expanding at a rapid rate, but when I've got to cut interesting items out of this column for length reasons, you know it's been an eventful few days.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> isn't at PAX this weekend, which probably explains <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> strategic reveal of a <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/?article=9170">new dev blog</a> earlier this afternoon. We knew that the MMOFPS will boast a number of similarities to its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> sibling (like the fitting screens, factions, and lore); one thing we didn't know, though, was that <em>DUST</em> will also repurpose vehicle hulls in a decidedly <em>EVE</em>-like way.<br />
<br />
Many <em>EVE</em> ships share the same hull visuals despite having radically different performance envelopes and combat roles, and <em>DUST</em> vehicles will definitely follow that trend, according to CCP's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cmdr-wang">Cmdr Wang</a>.<br />
<br />
<em>DUST</em> vehicles will also be powered by a capacitor (which should seem awfully familiar to you capsuleer types). Cap management will therefore play a vital role in the new game just as it does in the old. Finally, <em>DUST's</em> vehicle skill system also takes a page out of <em>EVE's</em> book. Today's dev blog finishes up with a look at a couple of high-level vehicle skills as well as some verbiage on module customization.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/dust-514-dev-blog-details-vehicle-roles/">DUST 514 dev blog details vehicle roles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 16:30:00 EST. Hoo boy, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a> and <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Wait, what? Isn't this Massively's shooter column? Well, yes, yes it is, and if you weren't already aware, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has made a shooter called <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a> set in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> universe. I bring this up for two reasons. One, I'm really looking forward to the game (as I might have mentioned <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/the-firing-line-dust-514-newsplosion-edition/">last time</a>). Two, CCP has taken some lumps in the PR department over the past couple of weeks primarily because of its annual alcohol-fueled <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/the-mittani-gets-hit-with-ban-and-resigns-in-wake-of-eve-online/">sausage-fest</a>.<br />
<br />
I'm not going to rehash cyber-bully scandals today, but since e-thug players will undoubtedly have some sort of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST</em></a> presence, and since <em>DUST</em> shares certain unforgiving gameplay tenets with its sister title, should those of you who love sandbox shooters but hate <em>EVE Online</em> even bother with the game?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/the-firing-line-can-you-hate-eve-and-love-dust/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: Can you hate EVE and love DUST?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/06/the-firing-line-can-you-hate-eve-and-love-dust/">The Firing Line: Can you hate EVE and love DUST?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/ccp-reiterates-anti-pay-to-win-stance-for-eve-microtransactions/"><img alt="CCP's Tori Frans Olafsson" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/torifrans.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has been pretty quiet on the subject of microtransactions since last summer's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/monoclegate">monoclegate</a> and the ensuing Jita protests. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/torfi-frans-olafsson">Torfi Frans Olafsson</a> recently spoke up about the trendy new business model, and while he acknowledged that it is popular, he also said that CCP is "very reluctant to do that in <em>EVE</em> because it's so established. It's like changing the DNA of a living organism after it's born. That didn't work in Blade Runner," he tells <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/04/02/eve-online-creative-director-on-microtransactions-i-personally-think-we-shouldnt-be-doing-it-in-the-near-future/">PC Gamer</a>.<br />
<br />
Olafsson also repeats the anti-pay-to-win mantra that comes standard in just about every developer interview these days. He says that CCP will sell cosmetic items in <em>EVE</em>, including makeovers for your avatar, ship, and starbase. Given the fact that players will be purchasing weapons and gear in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> (which will interface directly with <em>EVE's</em> pre-existing economy), we've no doubt it will be interesting to see how CCP maintains that delicate balance.<br />
<br />
"I think we have to be very careful in introducing such mechanics into <em>EVE</em>. And I personally think that we shouldn't be doing it in the near future," Olafsson says, "because it's such a vulnerable little flower in a vulnerable little ecosystem. You make minor changes to an ecosystem and you can introduce hostile things and the whole system breaks down."<br />

Oh man, this back and forth between <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> and <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a> is going to be the death of me. I feel like I'm cheating on one game every time I get excited about the other, but I just can't help it since both titles are drawing a bead on my personal sweet spot.<br />
<br />
This week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-Firing-Line/">Firing Line</a> is all <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST</em></a> all the time, thanks to the massive info dump at last weekend's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Fanfest-2012/">Fanfest 2012</a> event. I didn't get to go to Iceland for the hands-on, unfortunately, but I did log into PlayStation Home for the keynote livestream (which is archived after the cut in case you missed it).<br />
<br />
And I'll go ahead and beg your forgiveness for my fanboy breathlessness in advance this week. I've been an <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> player for a number of years now, so I'm already enamored of both the <em>DUST</em> universe and <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> propensity for sandbox mechanics. What I didn't know prior to Fanfest, though, was just how deep the rabbit hole's going to go.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/the-firing-line-dust-514-newsplosion-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: DUST 514 newsplosion edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/30/the-firing-line-dust-514-newsplosion-edition/">The Firing Line: DUST 514 newsplosion edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 11:00:00 EST. In tonight's ultra-short <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-MMO-Report/">MMO Report</a>, Casey complains that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Phantasy-Star-Online-2/">Phantasy Star Online 2</a></em> will launch for mobile platforms ahead of PC, drools all over the integration of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/">DUST 514</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em>, maintains a weirdly neutral face while discussing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Anarchy-Online/">Anarchy Online's</a></em> graphical overhaul, and regales us with an explanation of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World's</a></em> class-less game mechanics. He ends on a high note with a peek into Uncle Casey's mailbag and some mockery of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> players' forum campaign to undo the latest round of Warlock nerfs. No one's ever done <em>that</em> before.<br />

We didn't go to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> annual fanfest this year, and more's the pity. Aside from the unfortunate noise generated by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/ccp-investigates-player-panel-that-encouraged-cyber-bullying/">Mittanigate</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> released quite a bit of interesting info related to <em>EVE</em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, and even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness"><em>World of Darkness</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, the company has also thrown a bone to those of us who weren't able to attend (and who may have missed out on the extensive livestream coverage). A new post on the official <em>EVE</em> website has links to CCP's YouTube page, and there you'll find footage from CCP Presents, the <em>EVE</em> keynote speech, the <em>DUST</em> keynote speech, and the Tesselation tech demo. You can also check them out after the cut. Happy viewing!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/eve-fanfest-videos-viewable-on-youtube/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Fanfest videos viewable on YouTube</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/28/eve-fanfest-videos-viewable-on-youtube/">EVE Fanfest videos viewable on YouTube</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 12:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-online-fanfest-2012">2012 edition</a> of <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Fanfest has come and gone, and it went off (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/ccp-investigates-player-panel-that-encouraged-cyber-bullying/">mostly</a>) without a hitch, but that doesn't mean that the <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/dust-514">DUST 514</a></em> hypestorm is done -- not by a long shot. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net">Eurogamer</a> has some brand-spankin'-new screenshots of the upcoming PlayStation 3 FPS hot off the press from Fanfest.<br />

When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/inferno"><em>Inferno</em></a> arrives on May 22nd, it will introduce a whole new wardec system, war UI improvements, and iteration on faction warfare. We'll also see a ton of new modules released over time to completely mix up how people currently fit ships for different roles. For those who started playing <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> after 2007, getting new modules and having to rethink all your ship setups will be a very unusual state of affairs. For older players, it signals a glorious return to the way things were before <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/empyrean-age/">Empyrean Age</a></em> expansion -- players will have to learn to adapt to a constantly changing PvP landscape or stagnate and die.<br />
<br />
The only people <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/02/eve-evolved-dealing-with-a-war-declaration/">immune to wardecs</a> will still be those in NPC corps, and all current loopholes like <a href="http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/DecShield">EVE University's infamous decshield</a> will be removed. The number of wars the target corp is fighting will no longer be factored into the war cost, but the base cost is rising to 20 million and an additional 500,000 ISK will be added for every active member in the target corp. The number of wars the aggressor is fighting will still factor into cost, so you can sort of do a reverse-decshield by having alt corps wardec the target and waiting a week for his bill to recur. There are flaws with the system as presented, but those may have been at addressed at the roundtable, which was not streamed.<br />

In this special <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a> Extra edition, I delve into the information revealed at Fanfest on revamping PvP as presented at those talks that were streamed live.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/eve-evolved-extra-revamping-pvp-in-inferno/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved Extra: Revamping PvP in Inferno</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/eve-evolved-extra-revamping-pvp-in-inferno/">EVE Evolved Extra: Revamping PvP in Inferno</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 25 Mar 2012 20:00:00 EST. The annual <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> Fanfest is starting to become a major event in the gaming calendar, thanks to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a>'s partnership with Sony and the addition of <a href="http://www.dust514.com/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> and <a href="http://worldofdarkness.com/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> talks to the event schedule. This year, CCP flew gaming journalists to the event to give the press hands-on time with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST</em></a> and demonstrate the game's impressive realtime integration with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. Massively, unfortunately, is not permitted to accept such travel stipends, which meant that we couldn't produce <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2011">in-depth coverage and interviews as we did last year</a>, so instead we've pieced together information from the talks that were streamed to viewers at home.<br />
<br />
The theme of this year's Fanfest was unmistakably <em>DUST 514</em> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/e3-2011-dust-514s-realtime-integration-with-eve-online/">its integration with <em>EVE Online</em></a>. Attendees got first-hand experience with <em>DUST 514</em> and a free pass to enter the beta in April. There was even a live demonstration of the <em>EVE</em>-<em>DUST</em> link during which a battleship delivered an air strike directly into a <em>DUST</em> match in realtime. There were several talks on <em>EVE</em>'s upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/inferno"><em>Inferno</em></a> expansion and its PvP revamp, with details of new modules and gameplay designed to shake up the PvP landscape for the first time in several years. Players report leaving Fanfest this year with a very real sense that CCP is back on track and recovering from the aftermath of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/eve-evolved-the-day-that-eve-online-died/">Monoclegate</a>.<br />

In this week's colossal <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I piece together some of the information from <em>EVE</em> Fanfest 2012 and consider what it means for <em>EVE</em> players.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/eve-evolved-new-info-from-fanfest-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: New info from Fanfest 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/eve-evolved-new-info-from-fanfest-2012/">EVE Evolved: New info from Fanfest 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 25 Mar 2012 18:00:00 EST. While Massively isn't at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2012">Fanfest</a>, those who are in attendance have been treated to a wealth of new information and reveals on upcoming console MMOFPS <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>. During the <em>DUST 514</em> keynote speech, developers demonstrated orbital bombardment of a <em>DUST</em> match by <em>EVE</em> players in realtime. We saw the orbital command center and surface command centers that enable communication between the two games; we also saw the orbital artillery that let <em>DUST</em> players retaliate against players in orbit.<br />
<br />
Earlier today, during the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a> keynote, the <em>DUST</em> crew revealed some exciting new information based on questions repeatedly asked throughout Fanfest. In addition to PvP matches organised by NPC corporations, there will be co-op PvE survival missions in which players fight off hordes of rogue drones -- living machines with a collective consciousness. The PvE mode will be released in 2012, and there are some exciting plans for expansions scheduled for the year after.<br />
<br />
2013 will bring in e-sports and competitive gaming, with gladiator arenas in which players compete in capture the flag, deathmatch and custom game modes. The matches will be a true spectator sport, with live viewing from both the <em>EVE</em> and <em>DUST</em> game client and even betting on matches. Battles on hostile worlds are also due for release in 2013, with tactically different terrain that may require vehicles to get around. CCP confirmed that the highly requested MTACs (mechs) will also be introduced in 2013.<br />
<br />
<em>DUST</em> is currently in closed beta, with additional waves due to be released in April and June in time for E3. Read on to watch the first incredible trailer for the game in HD.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/24/dust-514-presented-at-eve-fanfest-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DUST 514 presented at EVE Fanfest 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/24/dust-514-presented-at-eve-fanfest-2012/">DUST 514 presented at EVE Fanfest 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Mar 2012 19:00:00 EST. Day one of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> 2012 Fanfest is in the books, and it was quite the interesting spectacle from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> perch at the top of the world.<br />
<br />
As expected, yesterday's juicy news centered on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, and we learned a bit about merc quarters, skills, and objectives. The devs also talked about <em>DUST's</em> battlefield <a href="http://www.dust514.org/home/item/dust-514-keynote">resupply mechanics</a> (which are somewhat unique for a shooter since every bullet, weapon, and vehicle must be produced before it can be airlifted to the front lines). We also got to see the first real footage of <em>EVE</em>/<em>DUST</em> integration courtesy of a <a href="http://kotaku.com/5895683/watch-an-mmo-pc-gamer-shoot-his-way-into-an-fps-players-console-game/">live orbital strike</a> coordinated between a ground trooper and a capsuleer.<br />
<br />
Today looks just as interesting, and the focus will be shifting to <em>EVE</em> as CCP talks up the state of the game's economy, factional warfare, and a <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/events/evetvschedule">variety of other topics</a>. As you're probably aware, you can catch all of this via our dedicated <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/fanfest2012/">EVETV Livestream</a> channel, and we'll have more info and analysis for you as the weekend rolls on.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/23/ccp-shifts-gears-from-dust-to-eve-at-fanfest-2012/">CCP shifts gears from DUST to EVE at Fanfest 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 09:00:00 EST. It's that time of the year again, when thousands of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> fans from across the globe fly to Iceland for the party at the top of the world. Every year, Fanfest is packed with high-profile reveals, sneak previews at what's to come, panels discussing hot topics, and round tables giving players the opportunity to discuss their ideas directly with developers.<br />
<br />
For <em>EVE</em> players, Fanfest is more than just a party with some reveals thrown in; it's a place to meet players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/26/eve-online-fanfest-2011-roundup-day-3/">as enraptured with the game as they are</a>, to share epic stories of battles won and lost, and to be a part of a truly global game community. Fanfest is three days of living in a world where the virtual universe of New Eden is real and the online exploits of its inhabitants are legend.<br />
<br />
Last year, Massively attended the <em>EVE</em> Fanfest and brought you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2011">in-depth first-hand coverage</a> of the event, but this year we take a back seat to the live reporting of EVE TV. Live streaming of the event has just begun and will continue for three full days. A full list of the talks, panels, speeches and events that will be streamed is available on <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/events/evetvschedule">the official EVE TV schedule</a>. Each day's events will also be repeated during the night for those viewing from the US. Head over to our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/fanfest2012/">official Fanfest livestream page</a> to watch the action!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/22/eve-onlines-2012-fanfest-kicks-off-with-free-livestreams/">EVE Online's 2012 Fanfest kicks off with free livestreams</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 08:50:00 EST. At noon EDT I'll be logging into PlayStation Home to see what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has in store for its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> faithful. I'm not expecting much beyond the free t-shirt for my Home avatar, since game devs are a notoriously tight-lipped lot when it comes to pre-release info that we actually want to hear.<br />
<br />
Nonetheless, a couple of my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> bros will be joining me, one of whom is a long-time PlayStation connoisseur and the other of whom went out and bought a PS3 this week specifically for <em>DUST</em>.<br />
<br />
And that brings us to today's early-morning question. Would you buy (or have you bought) a console or a PC system primarily for one game? Which one?<br />
<br />

		The days leading up to this year's <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/eve-online">EVE Online</a></em> <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2012">Fanfest</a> are fading quickly, and this weekend, fans of internet spaceships from around the world will descend upon Reykjavik. In light of that, it's probably about time that attendees start planning their schedules, and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> is here to help them do just that.<br />
		<br />
		The full Fanfest 2012 schedule is now up and running, and boy-howdy is it ever packed. In addition to the usual smattering of roundtables and panels, the convention will play host to a number of tournaments, and of course, hands-on time with <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/dust-514">DUST 514</a></em>. The full schedule is too cram-packed to even begin to summarize here, so just head on over to the official site and start filling your agendas.</div>

Welcome back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Firing-Line/">The Firing Line</a>, shooter fans. I'm still recovering from <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment's</a> <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> demo <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/07/gdc-2012-soes-planetside-2-gunning-for-the-big-time/">last week</a> (as well as <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> reveals regarding <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/dust-514-beta-starts-in-april-gameplay-video-released-at-gdc/">gameplay footage</a> and impending beta dates).<br />
<br />
Life goes on, though, and there are plenty of interesting tidbits to talk about with regard to our favorite genre. Won't you join me after the break for a recap?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/16/the-firing-line-blacklight-release-defiance-and-hopefully-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: Blacklight release, Defiance, and (hopefully) a DUST livestream</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/16/the-firing-line-blacklight-release-defiance-and-hopefully-a/">The Firing Line: Blacklight release, Defiance, and (hopefully) a DUST livestream</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Mar 2012 10:00:00 EST. I was looking longingly at an ad for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> <a href="http://fanfest.eveonline.com/en/default">Fanfest</a> a few minutes ago. I say longingly because it's a bit late to be booking airfare to Iceland for a couple weeks hence, to say nothing of getting off work. The event seems like a good time, though, and the icing on the cake is the in-game swag that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> distributes to attendees.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> does something similar for its annual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fan-faire"><em>Fan Faire</em></a> shindig, and I remember tons of exclusive items on display in the virtual homes of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> fans who made the annual pilgrimages to Las Vegas.<br />
<br />
It's bad enough that I never made it to Fan Faire, but it was infinitely worse that I wasn't able to get my collection-obsessed paws on rare no-trade paintings and whatnot (yeah, first-world problems, yada yada). What about you, morning crew? Do exclusive in-game event items rub you the wrong way?<br />

<div style="text-align: left; ">
	We're just over a week away from <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/eve-online">EVE Online's</a></em> <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-online-fanfest-2012">Fanfest 2012</a>, but unfortunately it isn't always convenient for the game's worldwide fans to take a weekend trip to Reykjavik. The folks at <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> know this, and they've got it all under control. Players who aren't lucky enough to get to attend the event in-person will have the opportunity to be there in (virtual) spirit with thanks to a livestream of the event on <em>EVE</em> TV.<br />
	<br />
	CCP's Soundwave, Sunset, and Guard will be providing fans with a continuous stream of coverage of major events, panels, and tournaments, complete with commentary to help viewers navigate the treacherous depths of the Fanfest. Serious fans can opt to shell out 1 PLEX (or its real-world equivalent wherever they may be) for <em>EVE</em> TV HD, which will allow them to stream the entire event in high-definition. That 1 PLEX will also net players an in-game Fanfest 2012 t-shirt and a fancy-schmancy Iteron Mark IV Quafe Ultra Edition industrial ship. More casual players will probably be content with <em>EVE</em> TV Free. While it doesn't include the nifty bonus items and it isn't in HD, it will still provide the same amount of Fanfest coverage as the HD stream.<br />
	<br />
	Virtual tickets for access to the stream are on sale now on <em>EVE Online</em>'s official site, so if you want to experience the joys of the <em>EVE Online</em> Fanfest from the comfort of your own home, this is your chance. And remember, Massively will have its own stream of the Fanfest right here on the site, so be sure to drop by and spend some time with your fellow spaceship-faring Massively readers.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/14/ccp-announces-eve-online-fanfest-2012-livestream/">CCP announces EVE Online Fanfest 2012 livestream</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 15:30:00 EST. One gets the sense that gamers can't wait for the future to get here so we can all join roving packs of pulse rifle-toting goons fighting each other for a living, like the world's most awesome paintball match. To tide us over, several studios are working hard at fulfilling our fantasies in virtual space with MMOFPS PvP titles such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2/"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/the-firing-line-more-on-planetside-2-and-dust-514-from-gdc/">We recently got a closer look</a> at both of these games at GDC, and it's safe to say that not only do they each come from experienced pedigree -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp/">CCP</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> -- but they're both highly anticipated by trigger-finger monitor mercenaries.<br />
<br />
But we all know the sacred rule of MMOs, which is that there can only ever be one. There can only be one victor and one success -- and all the rest are doomed to languish in whatever the virtual equivalent of a compost heap is. So tell us true right now: Which will be more successful, <em>DUST 514</em> or <em>PlanetSide 2</em>? Register your vote so that you'll be able to come back, months from now, and use this as proof that you knew better than all of the other fools out there!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/12/leaderboard-dust-514-vs-planetside-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Leaderboard: DUST 514 vs. PlanetSide 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/12/leaderboard-dust-514-vs-planetside-2/">Leaderboard: DUST 514 vs. PlanetSide 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 16:00:00 EST. While the idea of piloting your own tank or drop ship in a virtual world may seem like a carefree joyride of devastation and destruction, think again: Turning on the engine in a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> vehicle may be the last thing you ever do if you're ignorant of the basics.<br />
<br />
In a new dev post, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> opens up the manual of vehicle operation in its upcoming title and tells it like it is. For starters, players will need to train up specific skills in order to even be allowed behind the wheel of any of these beasts, and even then, a clueless operator could find him or herself a sitting duck if attention isn't paid to power consumption (in <em>DUST 514's</em> terminology, capacitors). Equipped modules all draw power from capacitors during combat, and while capacitors do regenerate over time, they can be drained, both from a player's actions or an enemy's attack. As such, it's important to keep power demands in mind when modding a vehicle.<br />
<br />
Two <em>DUST 514</em> war machines are used as examples in the article. There's the Marauder HAV, a tank-busting tank that comes with an alternate siege mode, and there's the Force Recon dropship, which can clock, jam enemy sensors, and drain enemy vehicles' power. The post ends with a hypothetical battle scenario involving both of these, showing how they could be used out in the field.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/dust-514-drivers-ed-includes-stealthing-siege-mode-and-power/">DUST 514 driver's ed includes stealthing, siege mode, and power draining</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 16:00:00 EST. This week I was fortunate enough to chat up the developers on the two biggest MMOFPS titles of the year. Exactly what year that <em>is</em> remains to be seen, and after hearing <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> use the word "alpha" quite a lot, I suspect that <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> may slip into 2013. And that's not a bad thing at all, by the way.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP's</a> <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, on the other hand, is surely coming in 2012. The devs will be doling out some long-awaited hands-on time with <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE's</em></a> precocious little brother at Fanfest in a couple of weeks, and while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2</em></a> share similar core gameplay, their target audiences (and the general feeling I get from each game) are completely different.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/the-firing-line-more-on-planetside-2-and-dust-514-from-gdc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2012: The Firing Line's PlanetSide 2 and DUST 514 redux</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/the-firing-line-more-on-planetside-2-and-dust-514-from-gdc/">GDC 2012: The Firing Line's PlanetSide 2 and DUST 514 redux</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 10:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has been incredibly coy about public testing for its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> MMOFPS, but last night the company revealed an upcoming April beta window in an exclusive interview with Gametrailers.<br />
<br />
CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hilmar-petursson">Hilmar Petursson</a> and CMO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/david-reid">David Reid</a> both gave the website a few interesting soundbytes as well as some long looks at <em>DUST</em> gameplay over the course of the eight-minute clip.<br />
<br />
<em>DUST</em> isn't intended as an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> replacement, nor does CCP expect huge numbers of <em>EVE</em> capsuleers to play the new shooter concurrently with its flying-in-space sandbox MMO. "It is really about providing this new gateway into the <em>EVE</em> universe for all the people who have been intrigued by it," Petursson said. "In April we'll open up the beta test we've been running since December of last year," he revealed.<br />

<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gdc-2012">GDC 2012</a> is now in full swing, and today we had the chance to sit down with <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/hilmar-petursson">Hilmar Petursson</a>, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/halldor-fannar">Halldor Fannar</a>, and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/david-reid">David Reid</a> to chat about the studio's upcoming FPS title, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/dust-514">DUST 514</a></em>. When asked about the studio's primary goal with <em>DUST 514</em>, the team had a simple reply: Make the best AAA free-to-play shooter possible. But is it coming to the PC?<br />
<br />
While many <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players aren't thrilled with <em>DUST 514</em>'s PlayStation 3 exclusivity, there may be hope for a PC release yet. And while the devs weren't ready to make any official statements on the spot, a bit of wink-nudging indicates that a PC release may still be in the cards. As the devs note, mouse and keyboard controls are already supported in the PS3 version of the title. "I wonder why we did that," Hilmar joked during the interview.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/07/gdc-2012-ccp-talks-dust-eve-and-world-of-darkness/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2012: CCP talks DUST 514 PC possibilities and World of Darkness development</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/07/gdc-2012-ccp-talks-dust-eve-and-world-of-darkness/">GDC 2012: CCP talks DUST 514 PC possibilities and World of Darkness development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 18:00:00 EST. If you were hoping to play a mobile version of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> shooter, you might want to adjust your expectations just a bit. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>-inspired MMOFPS will be making an appearance on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony">Sony's</a> PlayStation Vita device... but as a companion app rather than a full-blown game.<br />
<br />
CCP's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brandon-laurino">Brandon Laurino</a> explained the details to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-01-dust-514-vita-will-be-a-companion-app">Eurogamer</a> in an interview over the weekend. "At the most basic level, you can do transactions on the market, equip and customize your character, your vehicles, set up strategies with your friends and corporation members -- all of these sort of companion functions on the go," he says.<br />
<br />
Laurino also says that the <em>DUST</em> Vita launch date has yet to be determined but that gamers should keep an eye out for further iterations of the app after its initial release. "As we continue to explore what the possibilities are between Vita and PS3, of which there are many, we'll keep updating the app with stuff like that over time," he explained.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/05/dust-514-vita-version-is-companion-app-not-full-game/">DUST 514 Vita version is companion app, not full game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 09:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> may not be jumping on the free-to-play bandwagon with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, but the company has told Eurogamer that it is making use of the new payment model for its <em>EVE</em>-based MMOFPS called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>.<br />
<br />
If you're scratching your head because you thought this had been announced already, here's the skinny: The firm initially intended to charge between $10 and 20$ to download <em>DUST</em> over the PlayStation network. There was some sort of confusing payment scheme in the works by which the original cover charge would be converted to in-game credits that could then be spent in the cash shop. Now, though, <em>DUST</em> will be fully free-to-play (and download), with optional microtransactions on the side.<br />
<br />
CCP executive producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brandon-laurino">Brandon Laurino</a> tells Eurogamer that <em>DUST</em> isn't cut from the standard pay-to-win cloth, either. "It's the classic microtransaction dynamic of 'I can pay and get this item' or 'I can invest my time and get this item.' But neither of those options will give me an unfair advantage over the other," he explains.<br />
<br />
There's more to the article, including some bits about the types of cash shop items on offer. Head to Eurogamer for the full report.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/04/dust-514-will-be-f2p-and-free-to-download/">DUST 514 will be F2P and free to download</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 04 Mar 2012 21:00:00 EST. The head honcho of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/quest-online">Quest Online</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/3000ad">3000AD</a> recently checked in with <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/02/smartie-has-the-answers-derek-smart-on-line-of-defense/">Rock, Paper, Shotgun</a> to talk up the merits of his <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/line-of-defense"><em>Line of Defense</em></a> MMOFPS. He also had a few choice words for genre competitors like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP's</a> upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> sidequel.<br />
<br />
"<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a>, that's just going to fail," Smart opines. "There's no ifs, maybes or buts about it. The proper way I think that would have been done would have been to do an <em>EVE</em> sequel and bolt <em>DUST 514</em> into it."<br />
<br />
He doesn't stop there, though, and he goes on to say that folks who call <em>EVE</em> a space combat game "need to be taken out back and shot." It's a lengthy read, and Smart drops a few <em>Line of Defense</em> gameplay-related nuggets here or there, so head to RPS for all the details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/derek-smart-on-line-of-defense-and-its-competition/">Derek Smart on Line of Defense (and its competition)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST. Rock, Paper Shotgun has a <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/26/the-mmonitor-ccp-and-eve/">new interview</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hilmar-petursson">Hilmar Petursson</a> and CMO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/david-reid">David Reid</a>. The pair have a few interesting nuggets to share about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514"><em>DUST 514</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, as well as how the two games are related.<br />
<br />
Petursson says that initially, <em>DUST</em> mercenaries will not be riding the proverbial space elevator into orbit to parlay with their capsuleer counterparts in <em>EVE</em>. As in the eight-year-old spaceship MMO, though, the design will evolve and change, and "the two experiences are going to be more and more crafted over time."<br />
<br />
The interview also also posits that <em>DUST's</em> accessible shooter design may lead new players into the world of New Eden in spite of <em>EVE Online's</em> legendary learning curve. "<em>EVE</em> is a very particular type of experience, made for people who want to commit a lot of energy to have a game experience like that," Petursson explains. "Over the years we've seen a lot of people interested in the <em>EVE</em> universe, the single shard and the political drama, but [they] might not be particularly looking for an experience like the game itself. We see <em>DUST</em> as a way to allow people to participate in this universe by offering them a more intuitive, familiar, speedier, quicker, shorter time-commitment type of experience."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/26/ccp-dust-will-offer-a-more-intuitive-eve-experience/">CCP: DUST will offer a 'more intuitive' EVE experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. This week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> announced the name and focus of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s upcoming summer expansion. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/inferno"><em>Inferno</em></a> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/22/eve-online-announces-an-impending-inferno/">aims to re-invigorate PvP</a> with some long overdue gameplay changes. CONCORD-sanctioned wars will be iterated on for the first time in half a decade, and faction warfare will hopefully be getting the updates it should have received in 2008. Following on from the success of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/crucible"><em>Crucible</em></a> expansion with its hundreds of small features and gameplay changes, <em>Inferno</em> will also contain dozens of small gameplay changes, usability fixes, and minor improvements.<br />
<br />
We'll hear more about <a href="http://www.dust514.com/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> in the coming months as CCP reveals more concrete details of the game's link to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and the motivations behind planet-bound wars. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/incarna"><em>Incarna</em></a> fans will apparently also see some movement, with Team Avatar focusing on avatar-based updates for this release. While <em>Inferno</em> is a rather uninspired name and coincidentally would make three of the last four expansions start with the word "in," the expansion's content is genuinely exciting. Fundamental changes are coming to <em>EVE</em>'s PvP mechanics for the first time in several years. CCP hasn't revealed the exact changes, but that hasn't stopped players from speculating on what might be heading their way.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I speculate on the changes coming in the upcoming <em>Inferno</em> expansion and what changes I think might be coming to <em>EVE</em>'s PvP.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/26/eve-evolved-setting-the-universe-on-fire/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Setting the universe on fire</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/26/eve-evolved-setting-the-universe-on-fire/">EVE Evolved: Setting the universe on fire</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 18:00:00 EST.
