This week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Report/">The MMO Report</a>, Casey cheers for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Double-Fine/">Double Fine</a> Kickstarter effort, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/MechWarrior-Online/">MechWarrior Online's</a></em> first gameplay footage, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2's</a></em> preorder bonuses. "Shut up and take my money," he commands <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a>. He also heckles <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/TERA/">TERA</a></em> for its new level cap and discusses <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic's</a></em> free play weekend before getting a bit confused about just how <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft's</a></em> revamped scroll of resurrection works (it does not, in fact, work on fresh accounts).<br />

The Beard ends with a dip into the mailbag and a geeky commercial that involves "8bit animation, puppets, and beer" and must be seen to be believed. And you can do so after the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/15/the-mmo-report-shut-up-and-take-my-money/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The MMO Report: Shut up and take my money</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/15/the-mmo-report-shut-up-and-take-my-money/">The MMO Report: Shut up and take my money</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 Mar 2012 21:00:00 EST. So the gaming world is abuzz with news of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/doublefine">DoubleFine's</a> huge <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure">Kickstarter payday</a>. While it's true that there are only a handful of gaming studios with the resume necessary to make such a splash, it's also true that little-guy dev outfits around the globe are now aware of the funding potential inherent in connecting with your fans.<br />
<br />
RPG maker <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/obsidian">Obsidian</a> has begun <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/10/obsidian-want-to-know-what-you-want-them-to-make/">exploring its options</a>, Brian Fargo is <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/02/16/brian-fargo-turning-to-kickstarter-for-wasteland-2">interested</a> in creating a sequel to <em>Wasteland</em> via crowdfunding, and it's only a matter of time before a fledgling MMORPG designer follows suit. For this edition of the Daily Grind, let us know how you feel about a brave new publisher-free world. Would you enjoy cutting out the proverbial middleman when it comes to your gaming dollars, and more specifically, would you contribute to an MMO via Kickstarter?<br />

Is <a href="http://www.apb.com"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> the "Next Big Thing" in MMOs? While I'm fully aware that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/RealtimeWorlds/">Realtime Worlds</a> doesn't specifically prefer to associate the game with this genre, it's very much a part of it -- but it also orbits the fringes of what we commonly refer to as a massively multiplayer online game.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/All-Points-Bulletin/"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> come from a different school of business models. These games hinge on the idea that most people dislike coughing up 15 bucks a month to keep playing their favorite title. Just look to the success of the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, having a year ago <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/guild-wars-franchise-sells-6-million-copies/">passed six million copies sold</a>. That's a pretty great start for non-subscription MMOs, and because of that success we now have <em>GW's</em> sequel and <em>APB</em> on the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/01/the-digital-continuum-the-next-big-thing-in-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: The 'Next Big Thing' in MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/01/the-digital-continuum-the-next-big-thing-in-mmos/">The Digital Continuum: The 'Next Big Thing' in MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST.
