"Popular" is an understatement, of course. Millions of MMO gamers have bought the expansion to date. Despite its success in Western markets, <em>Wrath of the Lich King</em> still hasn't been released in China, where the title has a significant playerbase. Why? Regulatory issues and censorship. <br /><br />China-based <a href="http://www.jlmpacificepoch.com/newsstories?id=143005_0_5_0_M">JLM Pacific Epoch reports</a>: <em>"The government has rejected two applications by the second expansion for The9's (Nasdaq: NCTY) licensed MMORPG World of Warcraft, "Wrath of the Lich King," [...] The applications were rejected due to content that didn't meet requirements, including a city raid and skeleton characters; the submitted version did not contain WLK's Death Knight first hero class..." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/wrath-of-the-lich-king-rejected-thus-far-by-chinese-government/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wrath of the Lich King rejected thus far by Chinese government</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/wrath-of-the-lich-king-rejected-thus-far-by-chinese-government/">Wrath of the Lich King rejected thus far by Chinese government</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 15:00:00 EST. It's finally here, the first post-Wrath patch-of-important-things for <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em>. And by "important things" we mean changes like allowing players to create a Death Knight on any server, so long as they have a level 55+ character on at least one server. There are also a bevy of class changes, as well as <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/01/20/3-0-8-brings-snazzy-new-blizzard-launcher/">a pretty nifty launcher update</a> that's added plenty of utility plus style. Overall, the <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/patch-3.0.8/">3.0.8 patch</a> was quite beefy -- now we just have to sit tight for the eventual Icecrown patch to slam onto our harddrives.<br /><br />If you really want to get the low-down on all changes both big and small, <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/guide-to-patch-3-0-8/">WoW Insider's got you covered</a>. And if you're an Arcane Mage, then count yourself lucky as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> saw fit to <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/12/13/arcane-brilliance-patch-3-0-8-or-blizzards-love-letter-to-arc/">give out candies this go-around</a>.<hr />

This pie shows the gender of the player, not the character. In WOW as a whole the ratio of men to women is still around 4.5 to 1, so the DK (at least as a main character) is definitely skewing to the manly players. Again, not really a shock to anyone.<br /><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/dktreeheader.jpg" alt="" /><br /></div>
Each column represents the average number of points spent in each tree by players with a DK as a main. I made the mistake of asking some DKs of my acquaintance to tell me a little more about the different builds. My head exploded. One of the people I spoke with, a former reporter who understands the perils of too much information, suggested <a href="http://elitistjerks.com/f72/">I check out an uberguild's DK forum</a> and provide a link, rather than try to regurgitate it all here.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/fun-with-death-knight-data-pt-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fun with Death Knight data pt. 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/fun-with-death-knight-data-pt-2/">Fun with Death Knight data pt. 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 10:00:00 EST. Now that the Death Knight class has been out for nearly three whole months, we figure the flavor of the month kids have had their turn at bat, and the real fans of the new class are settled in. <br /><br />The sample for today's column is a little more than 500 people, all of whom were active WOW players before the launch, and now continue to actively play their Death Knight. "Actively" as measured by playing sessions - just having one of the new class in the character list isn't enough to count here. Read on to see how the Arthas' legions stack up!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/gamerdna-and-massively-offer-up-death-knight-data-goodness/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GamerDNA and Massively offer up Death Knight data goodness</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/gamerdna-and-massively-offer-up-death-knight-data-goodness/">GamerDNA and Massively offer up Death Knight data goodness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a>'s <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/wwi08">Worldwide Invitational</a> just wrapped up, and aside from the highly anticipated announcement about <em>Diablo III</em>, there were also a huge amount of changes announced for <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>. From Shamans getting the ability to have their totems cover the entire raid as opposed to just their party, to the confirmation that you will be able to make a <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/Death-Knight/">Death Knight</a> of every playable race. Many players are buzzing about the upcoming changes. <br /><br />This morning we thought we'd ask you what you thought the most interesting <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> news was from the Paris Worldwide Invitational? This blogger thinks that her favorite thing (aside from <em>Diablo III</em>, which really isn't <em>WoW</em> news) is the unveiling of the Blizzard authenticator encryption keychain. It will be interesting to see if other MMOG companies follow this step or not.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/the-daily-grind-best-news-from-wwi/">The Daily Grind: Best news from WWI?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 08:10:00 EST. I first encountered this in Mythic's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a>-- after you get one character to a certain level, the game would let you <a href="http://support.darkageofcamelot.com/kb/article.php?id=644">use the "/level" command</a> to pop any character you created up to a higher level instantly.<br /><br />You might argue that we haven't seen that tactic lately, but we're going to see a big example of it next year-- when Blizzard <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/death-knight">releases Death Knights</a> in the next <em>WoW</em> expansion, we've already been told that they'll start at a higher level. The official explanation for that is that <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/08/03/death-knight-details/">they don't want Death Knights</a> to ever be level 1 (they want them cool from the start), but considering that the expansion will also bring 10 more levels into the mix, it's a lot to ask players who've already reached level 80 to roll a new character and do it again.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/the-pros-and-cons-of-instant-leveling/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The pros and cons of instant leveling</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/the-pros-and-cons-of-instant-leveling/">The pros and cons of instant leveling</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 20:10:00 EST.
