Ah, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a>. What would we do without the dried husk of your long-dead corpse to kick around the sanctified halls of American journalism, both actual and gaming?<br />
<br />
The latest drama from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling's</a> former studio comes courtesy of the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/21/business/curt-schilling-rhode-island-and-the-fall-of-38-studios.html">New York Times</a>, which reports on Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chaffee's latest attempt to distance himself from the fiasco surrounding 38's inability to pay back state loans.<br />
<br />
"I had so many reservations about this being a bad deal, that I was reluctant to micromanage, to have it be 'Chafee screwing this up,'" he told the Times. "And don't forget, we had our hands full in this state."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/22/yep-its-more-38-studios-drama/">Yep, it's more 38 Studios drama</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://bostonherald.com/business/business_markets/2013/04/ri_lawmakers_weigh_38_studios_debt_default">The AP is reporting</a> that Rhode Island is attempting to default on the debt it owes for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios' </a>$75 million loan and subsequent bankruptcy. The state has a proposal before lawmakers that would keep it from having to make any payments to bond holders.<br />
<br />
Supporters of the move to default say that the insurance company will compensate bond holders, while the EDC, which approved the loan, says that defaulting will hurt future project and bond ratings. One lawmaker and default proponent, Rep. Charlene Lima, said that the 38 Studios fiasco harmed the reputation of the state and constricted its future economic development.<br />
<br />
The proposal is being opposed by Governor Lincoln Chafee, who wants to see the debt repaid.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/11/rhode-island-attempting-to-default-on-38-studios-debt/">Rhode Island attempting to default on 38 Studios' debt</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. Just when you thought the world might let the wound where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur</em></a> were ripped from your heart heal over, along comes some new drama.<br />
	<br />
	Max Wistow, the lawyer for the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, filed documents on behalf of the state claiming that 38 Studios needed more than $75 million in loan guarantees before the company ever moved to Rhode Island. He argues that folks at 38 Studios knew that the funds they were receiving from the state would be insufficient. The company netted about $50 million from an EDC bond sale, and Wistow is claiming "crushing evidence" that 38 Studios actively masked its financial shortfall.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/38-studios-may-have-actively-masked-financial-hardship/">38 Studios may have 'actively masked' its financial hardship</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 17:00:00 EST. Let's assume for a moment that you're <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>, formerly of the Red Sox and formerly of the now-defunct <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>. You're facing a massive lawsuit for fraud regarding a $75 million loan from the state of Rhode Island. What do you do? It appears that Mr. Schilling's first approach is to <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SCHILLINGS_GAMING_COMPANY?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT">ask the judge on the case to throw out the case entirely</a>, claiming that the basis of the case is itself fraudulent.<br />
<br />
The crux of the lawsuit is the state's claim that Schilling and the 38 Studios board of directors willfully obfuscated the company's status from state lawmakers. Schilling has put forth that 38 Studios fully disclosed its status to the state investors on numerous occasion, providing them with an accurate picture of the company's financial situation. Due to this disclosure the allegations of fraud and obfuscation are simply not possible, hence the request for dismissal. Schilling goes on to claim that the entire suit is politically motivated and that the company's failure is chiefly due to Governor Lincoln Chafee not doing enough to save 38 Studios from bankruptcy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/04/curt-schilling-asks-judge-to-dismiss-38-studios-fraud-lawsuit/">Curt Schilling asks judge to dismiss 38 Studios fraud lawsuit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 04 Mar 2013 17:30:00 EST. In 2004, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CurtSchilling/">Curt Schilling</a> ignored his doctor's advice and hobbled to the pitcher's mound with a wounded right ankle to win Game Two of the World Series, clenching the second of four straight victories against the St. Louis Cardinals and proving that the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Bambino">Curse of the Bambino</a> had run its course.<br />
<br />
The blood-stained sock worn by Schilling on that day is now stuff of Boston legend and had become quite an icon during the series. It seemed to be a piece of memorabilia that Schilling wouldn't dare part with, but his recent business dealings have forced his hand. And foot.<br />
<br />
If you find yourself in need of a used bloody sock to frame in your sports den, you can <a href="http://sports.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7070&amp;lotIdNo=60003">start the bidding</a> on February 4th. Schilling hopes to raise at least $100,000 through the auction.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/17/38-studios-debt-to-be-partially-repaid-with-bloody-sock/">38 Studios debt to be partially repaid with bloody sock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST. The sun has set on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>, but there's still a lot of people eager to analyze and dissect the company's rise and sharp decline. As a whole, it's been looked at and analyzed extensively from the gaming side, but the other factors that went into the studio's enormous state loan and subsequent burnout are examined more closely in a new video. This isn't about whether or not <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> would have been any good; this is about simple business and political pressures that doomed the project from the start.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> started 38 Studios at the end of his baseball career, but it was a well-known fact that his attempts to court venture capitalists were unsuccessful. The video goes into depth regarding the political climate that encouraged Rhode Island legislators to sign the historic and ill-advised loan, as well as the factors leading to the company's ultimate demise. If you're interested in a broader view now that the smoke has cleared, take a look at the full video past the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/03/a-video-retrospective-on-38-studios-discusses-star-struck-legis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A video retrospective on 38 Studios discusses 'star-struck legislators'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/03/a-video-retrospective-on-38-studios-discusses-star-struck-legis/">A video retrospective on 38 Studios discusses 'star-struck legislators'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST. Back in May, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> became embroiled in the controversy of the year when the studio officially shut down and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">fired all 379 of its employees</a>. The story quickly turned political as the studio had been granted a loan of $75m US by the state of Rhode Island and it became known that the tax-paying public could be hit for an estimated $150.7m US due to the studio's closure.<br />
<br />
The story of mishandled taxpayer money has played a big part in the politics of Rhode Island. Today <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/Rhode-Island-38-studios-lawsuit/">that story developed further</a> as the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which granted the original loan and may therefore be responsible for the public debt, filed a lawsuit against the people who created the deal. The defendants named in the case include 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling, CEO Jennifer McLean, former EDC executive director Keith Stokes, Wells Fargo Securities and even Barclays Capital. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/rhode-island-edc-sues-curt-schilling-and-more-over-38-studios-lo/">released a public statement</a> about the lawsuit on YouTube.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/rhode-island-edc-sues-curt-schilling-and-more-over-38-studios-lo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rhode Island EDC sues Curt Schilling and more over 38 Studios loan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/rhode-island-edc-sues-curt-schilling-and-more-over-38-studios-lo/">Rhode Island EDC sues Curt Schilling and more over 38 Studios loan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/26/38-studios-auction-rhode-island">Earlier this week</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>' former headquarters in Providence, Rhode Island played host to a public auction that brought in approximately $650,000 through over 1,000 bidders. If you combine this number with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/18/initial-38-studios-auction-brings-in-180k/">last week's auction</a> at the studio's Big Huge Games division, the total recouped through auctions came to $830,000. This is unfortunately only a fraction of the <a href="http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_268748/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=WRKqwK47">estimated $150.7 million</a> owed in bankruptcy filings, but the best part hasn't been put up on the block yet.<br />
<br />
The <em>Kingdoms of Amalur</em> intellectual property is said to be "sold in a negotiated transaction over the next three to six months," according to Joystiq. The total from that sale doesn't expect to cover the entire amount owed, which leaves the remainder up to the Rhode Island taxpayers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/26/38-studios-auctions-recoup-830k-of-150-7-million-owed/">38 Studios auctions recoup $830k of $150.7M owed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a> is most recently famous for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/38-studios-declares-bankruptcy-law-enforcement-investigating/">failing spectacularly</a> at using loans from Rhode Island and investors to create a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur"><em>Kingdom</em>s<em> of Amalur</em></a> MMO. As the founder of the now-bankrupt <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 studios</a> and someone who personally guaranteed some $12 million worth of loans related to the studio, Schilling's lucky that he was famous for other stuff before stepping into game development.<br />
	<br />
	For example, Schilling was one of the best pitchers in American League baseball in 2004 and played for the Boston Red Sox, the only team in MLB history to win a seven-game series after losing the first three games. A bloody sock that he wore during that series is listed (along with World War II-era memorabilia, one of Lou Gehrig's baseball caps, his home, and a stake in a private equity firm) in a <a href="http://cache.boston.com/stuff/2012/10/03/schilling.pdf">collateral filing</a>.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/04/curt-schilling-might-pay-back-debt-by-selling-baseball-memorabil/">Curt Schilling might pay back debt by selling baseball memorabilia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Oct 2012 21:00:00 EST. After a series of misfortunes, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">closed down</a> last May and then filed for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/38-studios-declares-bankruptcy-law-enforcement-investigating/">bankruptcy</a> in June. Next month, the assets of the company that was working on the MMO known as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> will be auctioned off. The auctions -- scheduled for October 16th and the 23rd -- will include office furniture and equipment, TVs, audio recording equipment, graphic design and animation equipment, computers, servers, and more.<br />
<br />
Currently listed in the assets are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/XBox-360/">XBox 360</a> Development Kits, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/microsoft/">Microsoft</a> is requesting be removed since they are the property of Microsoft and not 38 Studios.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/28/38-studios-assets-to-be-auctioned-off-in-october/">38 Studios assets to be auctioned off in October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Sep 2012 10:00:00 EST. First things first. We apologize for twisting the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a> knife.<br />
<br />
With that out of the way, did you know that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a>' shuttered MMO was going to be the first mega-budget title to launch with a free-to-play model? We didn't either until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a> confessed as much to Boston Magazine.<br />
<br />
"We were going to be the first AAA, hundred-million-dollar-plus, free-to-play, microtransaction-based MMO. That was one of our big secrets," Schilling said. The dust has more or less settled around the demise of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>, but much of the information about what happened to lead the company so deep into the hole is fragmented. Some fans admonish the Rhode Island governor, some admonish <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>, and some admonish the management team that led to several poor decisions. <a href="http://www.bostonmagazine.com/articles/2012/07/38-studios-end-game/">A new piece in Boston Magazine</a> goes into depth about where Schilling's management caused problems and how the culture at the studio slowly deteriorated.<br />
<br />
The article paints Schilling as being relentlessly optimistic and dedicated to his employees but at the same time unfamiliar with business and the realities of running a game company. He also wound up with a bloated staff and disregarded information from management, leading to conflicting demands and a general lack of progress on major deadlines for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em>. If you've got any interest in the game industry, it's <a href="http://www.bostonmagazine.com/articles/2012/07/38-studios-end-game/">a fascinating look</a> at how a game company can start with high hopes and dissolve under financial realities.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/23/a-look-at-curt-schillings-management-of-38-studios/">A look at Curt Schilling's management of 38 Studios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EST. Whether you love him, hate him, respect him, or ignore him, when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/michael-pachter/">Michael Pachter</a> speaks, his voice carries. So it's of note that everyone's favorite videogame analyst is back with a few more controversial remarks concerning the growth -- or lack of it -- in the MMO market.<br />
<br />
Speaking at the <a href="http://evolve3d.net/">Evolve Conference</a>, Pachter said, "It looks to me as though the MMO market is as big as it's ever going to be -- as far as subscription MMOs. People willing to play $15 a month, there are six or seven million of them. Period. If <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars</em></a> couldn't expand it, when it's made by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a>, nothing can do it. That's why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> went out of business, because he couldn't get financing."<br />
<br />
In May, Pachter <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/analyst-says-no-one-is-buying-mmos-after-swtor-fizzled/">proclaimed that nobody was buying MMOs</a> after <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic's </em>launch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/10/mmo-subscriber-numbers-have-peaked-says-industry-analyst/">MMO subscriber numbers have peaked, says industry analyst</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 15:30:00 EST. For those interested in twisting the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> knife just a little bit more, Kotaku has posted what would have been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Project Copernicus</em></a>' official announcement trailer had <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling's</a> development house not imploded dramatically earlier this year.<br />
<br />
The clip runs just over two minutes and features a series of stylized vignettes that morph into brief snippets of gameplay footage. All of this is set to a cryptic voiceover repeating something about a circle still turning.<br />
<br />
It's an interesting if slightly depressing look at what might have been. Head over to Kotaku for all the drama.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schiling">Curt Schilling</a> has spoken to a Boston radio station about the lingering effects of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a>' demise. The former Red Sox pitcher has been vilified by some gamers who assume that he's living the high life while former employees are suffering, but he tells WEEI that that's pretty far from the truth.<br />
<br />
"The money I saved and earned playing baseball was probably all gone... life is going to be different," he says.<br />
<br />
Rhode Island taxpayers will also be tightening their belts, as they'll pay nearly $12 million annually through the year 2020 to cover 38's $150 million debt, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/22/schilling-says-hes-tapped-out-in-first-interview-since-38-stu/">according to Joystiq</a>. Schilling also revealed that 38 Studios was close to signing a deal to produce a <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> sequel prior to remarks made by Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee that supposedly damaged the negotiation process.<br />
<br />
Schilling also expressed remorse at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/13/alleged-38-studios-spouse-outlines-familys-financial-struggles/">plight of former 38 Studios employees</a>. "The employees got blindsided," he said. "They have every right to be upset. I always told everybody if something were going to happen, you're going to have a month or two of lead time, and I bombed on that one in epic fashion."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/22/schilling-tapped-out-after-loss-of-38-studios/">Schilling 'tapped out' after loss of 38 Studios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:00:00 EST. While the fallout from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios'</a> collapse <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/13/alleged-38-studios-spouse-outlines-familys-financial-struggles/">carries with it a human toll</a>, it also has triggered a legal one as well. State and federal law enforcement agencies have issued subpoenas to both Bank Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation over the loans that enticed the game studio to the state.<br />
<br />
Currently, the RI state police, the state attorney general's office, the FBI, and the US attorney's office <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/38-studios-declares-bankruptcy-law-enforcement-investigating/">are jointly looking into the situation</a>. Police are investigating the specifics of the deals in an attempt to figure out what exactly happened. The subpoenas requested records of the financial contracts and loans.<br />
<br />
Both the RIEDC's $75M in taxpayer bonds and Bank Rhode Island's $8.5M loan are unlikely to be repaid <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/38-studios-declares-bankruptcy-law-enforcement-investigating/">following the studio's bankruptcy</a>.<br />

The letter outlines the family's financial struggles in great detail, and it serves as a cautionary tale to game industry hopefuls who are thinking of uprooting a family to follow a dream. Though the author is unnamed and could quite literally be anyone, Gamasutra says it has "verified her husband's name and former position at 38 Studios."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/13/alleged-38-studios-spouse-outlines-familys-financial-struggles/">Alleged 38 Studios spouse outlines family's financial struggles after company's closure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a>, in a move surprising absolutely no one, has declared bankruptcy. This report comes hot on the heels of the news that the <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/project-copernicus">Project Copernicus</a></em> developer has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">laid off all of its employees and sold Big Huge Games</a>. In addition to covering the bankruptcy, the Providence Journal revealed that "state and federal authorities have launched an investigation into [the company]."<br />
	<br />
	State police Col. Steven G. O'Donnell states that the inquiry is taking place "to investigate activities that have recently come to light at 38 Studios." According to the Journal, these activities include taking out loans totaling $8.5 million US "based on state film tax credits that had not yet been issued." Things are looking pretty grim for Curt Schilling and his studio, but we'll just have to stay tuned to see how the rest of this plays out.<br />

	<strong>[Update: Our sister site <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/38-studios-liquidation-valued-in-tens-of-millions/">Joystiq reports</a> that the Rhode Island governor has stated, "We are going to do everything possible to maximize return on our investment [...] Taxpayers in Rhode Island can have full confidence that if there's a penny that we can get, or a nickle or a dime, we'll get it." Gamers and other outsiders have been quick to label <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a> as the primary villain in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> drama, but a new piece at Gamasutra intimates that that might not be the whole story.<br />
<br />
The website cites multiple anonymous sources who say that 38's situation wasn't helped by Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee. "Once things went bad, Chafee's office started leaking any information it could to make 38 Studios look like it had been a bad deal. Unfortunately, a lot of these leaks involved partial and complete misinformation," the source said.<br />
<br />
Another source dispelled notions of excessive spending at the shuttered studio. "I can say that the company didn't spend money extravagantly at all. We didn't have giant statues in the halls, or supercomputers with 30-inch monitors at every desk. We had what we needed to work on the game and that was it," the source tells Gamasutra.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: One former team member talked about 38 Studios' MMO, saying that it was quite close to completion: "I have worked on a number of projects in my career, and I can say without reservation that <em>Copernicus</em> [had] incredible potential to be a blockbuster MMO. It wasn't completely revolutionary in terms of gameplay, but it took existing conventions and refined or improved them across the board. The idea that this imminently playable, triple-A, beautiful MMO that had millions of dollars and man-hours poured into it is heartbreaking."]</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/01/former-38-studios-employees-defend-schilling-talk-political-mis/">Former 38 Studios employees defend Schilling, talk political misinformation [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Jun 2012 10:45:00 EST. Despite the state of Rhode Island's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-appears-to-be-getting-no-new-help/">best efforts</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> is not done with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em>. Sure, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">38 Studios may be gone</a>, but the legacy lives on, this time through a handful of brand-new screenshots posted on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3765839378253.155500.1044701480&amp;type=1">Curt Schilling's own Facebook page</a> this morning.<br />

These six shots show the ready-for-primetime artwork that is a big part of why we're even more disappointed in the way things played out. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a> is finally speaking out on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> brouhaha. The former Red Sox pitcher told <a href="http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2012/05/sa-editing-schi.html">The Providence Journal</a> that he stands to lose $50 million of his personal fortune as the fiasco plays out.<br />
<br />
Schilling also laid some blame at the feet of Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee, who he says made public statements that were "devastating" and that "scared off private investors." Joystiq also reports on why some former 38 Studios employees <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/29/schilling-says-he-could-lose-50-million-of-his-own-money-in-38/">remained silent</a> as the drama unfolded over the last week.<br />
<br />
"[Schilling] had invested so much into us financially and personally, we were not about to betray that trust. We were not going to take the chance of speaking to the press and accidentally ruining any chances with outside investors. Unfortunately, it didn't matter if the employees spoke and ruined things with the investors as the governor beat us to it," the source said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/29/schilling-speaks-out-on-38-studios-debacle-stands-to-lose-50-m/">Schilling speaks out on 38 Studios debacle, stands to lose $50 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 May 2012 11:30:00 EST. The closure of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Big-Huge-Games/">Big Huge Games</a> yesterday sparked a series of interesting events that make me both sad and proud to be a part of the greater gamer community. Job offers were overflowing from current game companies looking to snatch up some of 38's talented designers, and a <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/search/%2338jobs">Twitter hashtag</a> was even created to spread the word and get new jobs for those affected by the layoffs. I am proud of the outreach and camaraderie of the game development community, but the hate being thrown at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> isn't going to solve anything.<br />
<br />
The most important thing we can do at this point is to tape off the crime scene, look at the evidence, and figure out what went wrong.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/editorial-learning-from-the-38-studios-disaster/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Editorial: Learning from the 38 Studios disaster</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/editorial-learning-from-the-38-studios-disaster/">Editorial: Learning from the 38 Studios disaster</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> disaster continues to unfold today, as the troubled studio laid off its entire staff and <a href="http://kotaku.com/5913102/rumor-38-studios-shutting-down-big-huge-games">may be selling off</a> its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Big-Huge-Games/">Big Huge Games</a> division in Boston. <a href="http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/18612371/2012/05/24/report-38-studios-no-longer-paying-workers-could-close-by-weekend">Boston's Fox 25 News</a> speculates that the studio may close by this weekend.<br />
<br />
38 Studios CM <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/charles-dane">Charles Dane</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/cmdane/status/205761811981680642">confirmed being laid off</a> on Twitter: "Now on the market. I had an awesome run with 38 Studios, but this dream is now ending."<br />
<br />
Word is that the company is also selling its subsidiary, Big Huge Games. Big Huge Games is the maker of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>, 38 Studios' single-player prequel to its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO. This would not be the first time that Big Huge Games was sold by its parent company, as the studio experienced the same event back in 2009.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/curt.schilling.56">Oh his Facebook page</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> stressed that <em>Reckoning </em>did quite well in sales. "I wanted to clear up some misinformation around 38 Studios' first product, <em>Reckoning</em>. Sales of <em>Reckoning</em> outperformed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA's</a> expectations and sold more than 1.2 million units in the game's first 90 days in the market."<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update]:</strong> Developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-shwayder">Ryan Shwayder</a> has also confirmed the layoffs via his <a href="http://www.nerfbat.com/2012/05/24/38-studios-what-a-journey/">personal blog</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">38 Studios lays off entire staff, sells Big Huge Games [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. The bad news continues to accumulate for Rhode Island developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>. According to Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee, the company has received a grand total of <a href="http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2012/05/chafee-no-outsi.html">no outside investment</a>. It also has not received any of the tax credits that it requested, leaving the studio still deep in the hole. Chafee has stated that he is doing everything in his power to prevent the studio's closure.<br />
<br />
Staff members are also <a href="http://blogs.wpri.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-loses-ceo-and-high-profile-vp-linkedin-suggests/">leaving the company at an alarming rate</a>, with CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jen-MacLean/">Jen MacLean</a> and senior VP of product development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/John-Blakely/">John Blakely</a> both confirming their departures from the company. The hiring of both individuals was trumpeted as a mark of success as recently as March of this year, and Blakely was still employed by 38 Studios as recently as Monday evening. There's even talk of the company's health insurance running out. None of this news suggests that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>'s company will make a quick turnaround -- if indeed it makes a turnaround at all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-appears-to-be-getting-no-new-help/">38 Studios appears to be getting no new help</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. Will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling/">Curt Schilling's</a> dream team survive this financial crisis? We brought expert analyst Eliot Lefebvre on the podcast to give us his opinion.<br />

If last week's <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> flythrough had been a hopeful note, the latest news out of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> is another downturn. Following a meeting today, the Rhode Island EDC board decided <a href="http://www.pbn.com/EDC-board-takes-no-action-on-38-Studios,67725">to take no action to help the ailing company at this time</a>. Governor Lincoln Chafee said following the meeting that the financial situation of the studio remains unchanged from last week, but did note that <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/rhode_island/articles/2012/05/21/ri_economic_agency_to_meet_on_schillings_company_1337618904/?p1=News_links">the company has seen some layoffs</a> and underwent unspecified internal shifts.<br />
<br />
Founder <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> did not directly respond to press inquiries, stating that he would answer questions when he is able to do so. He did, however, state that he was not taking further taxpayer money. Whether or not there will be a company there to take any money in the near future is still very much in doubt, however, and while Chafee has been a bit more diplomatic about aiding the studio, he has stressed that any assistance would be far on the conservative side.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/layoffs-confirmed-for-38-studios-rhode-island-takes-no-action/">Layoffs confirmed for 38 Studios, Rhode Island takes no action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 22:30:00 EST. It is not every day that a U.S. governor is the one to announce the launch window for an MMO, so savor the weirdness while you can: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/rhode-island-governor-gives-38-studios-copernicus-mmo-a-june-20/">announced at a press conference</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> will be releasing code-name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> next summer. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," Chafee said. He also stated that he thought the financial deal was a "risky enterprise" from the start.<br />

38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling <a href="http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/05/18/facebook-curt-schilling-denies-paid-himself-back-with-money-thanks-supporters-ailing-studios-video-game-company/EnqdY2flmq0Bf55m4YvdRM/story.html">said on Facebook</a> that rumors of his using the state funds to repay his personal investment in the company was "not true." In a separate post, Schilling attempted to set an optimistic tone: "We will find a way, and the strength, to endure."<br />
<br />
We have been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">the financial turmoil</a> that 38 Studios is in following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">its default on paying back Rhode Island</a> for its $75 million loan. The studio and state <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/">are looking for options</a>, but in the meanwhile, 38 Studios has been struggling to make payments <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">by holding back employee paychecks</a> and seeking additional capital from private investors.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">38 Studios' Project Copernicus to release in June 2013, says RI governor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 14:30:00 EST. If you're familiar with the phrase "robbing Peter to pay Paul," you'll understand the latest episode in the ongoing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> financial crisis. Except replace "Paul" with "the state of Rhode Island" and "Peter" with "<a href="http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/politics/local_politics/38-studios-pays-edc-not-employees">the company's employees</a>." Yes, in order to make the most recent payment to the state that sparked this whole crisis, the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation has been informed that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>'s company is paying the state but not paying any of the company's employees. According to anonymous sources, all temporary employees and contractors have also been terminated.<br />
<br />
While <a href="http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/politics/local_politics/38-studios-pays-edc-not-employees">this measure</a> might help forestall immediate action, the company is still on the hook for a $75 million loan, and Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee has made it clear that the company is looking for more assistance from the state in order to remain viable. 38 Studios continues to make no public statements at this time. We'll no doubt have more on this story in the coming days as it continues to develop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">38 Studios paying state back by not paying employees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. Generally, when your company defaults on a major loan, you might expect an emergency meeting about the loan and the company's future would produce some results. But apparently today's meeting between <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> owner <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> and Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee resulted in... absolutely nothing. Specifically, Rhode Island's Economic Development Corporation <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/38-studios-schilling-ask-rhode-island-for-more-money-state-off/">will take no immediate action to prevent the studio from going under</a>, with Chafee on record as asking, "How do we avoid throwing good money after bad?"<br />
<br />
It's a loaded question if you consider that the failure of 38 Studios would put the state's taxpayers on the hook for more than $112 million. Schilling has declined to elaborate on the company's state in interviews, and he has not made public how much more funding the company is seeking. It's bad news for the studio, bad news for the state, and bad news for any fans still looking forward to the possibility of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> in the future.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/rhode-island-owns-38-studios-intellectual-property/">Joystiq reports</a> that "it appears 38 Studios put up all present and future IP by the company as collateral," meaning that if the studio defaults, the state of Rhode Island will own all of its game assets. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> is one of many developers whose first big game (<em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em>) was rumored to lead into an MMO further on down the line. It looks like there may be storm clouds on the horizon before that project even gets moving, however, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rhode-island-gov-working-hard-at-keeping-38-studios-solvent/">the company may be facing financial issues</a>. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has apparently been meeting with owner <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> to work on "different issues," with Chafee noting that his administration has always tried to ensure that Rhode Island companies remain financially solvent.<br />
<br />
If you consider that Rhode Island invested about $75 million in the company, it's obvious that the government has an interest in making the company remain viable over the long term. <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> was a moderate hit, but that might not be enough for the company as it develops. We'll have more on this story as it develops, hopefully with better news.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">Rumor: 38 Studios may be having financial trouble</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 20:20:00 EST. Fresh off the launch of its single player game, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>, 38 Studios has announced the addition of two new members to their team. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-blakely/">John Blakely</a>, who has worked for SOE and Zynga, will become their senior vice president of development, while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-hansen">Mark Hansen</a> has come from LEGO Systems Inc. to take on the role of senior vice president of business operations. They both took the time to speak with Massively about their experience in the industry as well as their upcoming roles with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a>. As MMO fans, we're keeping a close eye on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> for its development of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a>, the MMO that will serve as the follow-up to next month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>. The risk factor of not only developing two major intertwined projects in parallel but to have the additional task of creating a brand-new IP in which to put them must be a pressing one, which is why <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/333680/interviews/kingdoms-of-amalur-skyrim-and-oblivion-are-the-same-game-we-want-to-take-rpgs-in-a-new-direction/?page=1">CVG</a> sat down with <em>Reckoning </em>Lead Designer <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/ianfrazier">Ian Frazier</a> to talk about challenges the studio has been tackling.<br />
<br />
Frazier outlines the balance the studio's struck between its three big-name creators -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-mcfarlane/">Todd McFarlane</a> (art), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ra-salvatore/">R.A. Salvatore</a> (story), and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ken-rolston/">Ken Rolston</a> (design) -- not to mention the ideas that pour in from founder <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling/">Curt Schilling</a>. Fortunately, Frazier says that these larger-than-life personalities mesh well together: "The nice thing that's worked out is, I think if we'd got three famous game designers, it would have been a disaster: big egos, they're all on the same plane, it wouldn't have worked out. What makes this work is they're all different."<br />
<br />
Even though Rolston previously worked on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/oblivion/"><em>The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion</em></a>, Frazier said the designer wanted to try his hand at something fresh with a better combat system. "They're all great games," Frazier said of the Elder Scrolls series, "and I think they're progressively better, but they're all the same game. It's not like they're radically changing with time."<br />
<br />
Frazier said Reckoning has been compared to a "single-player <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>" as well as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dragon-Age/"><em>Dragon Age</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fable/"><em>Fable</em></a>, but he insists that the world and ideas the team's been creating will take it far past those basic comparisons.<br />

While I'm on board the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> train (at least until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE's</a> <em>Star Wars: The New Republic</em> comes out in 2014 and forces <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> to shut down), I can certainly sympathize with the frustration that non-fans are feeling right about now. There are few things more annoying than not being into the latest craze -- or hating it outright -- and yet being unable to escape it.<br />
<br />
So I'm here to say to you today that, like <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, <em>SWTOR </em>isn't the be-all, end-all of the MMO field. It's a part of it, but just one part, and there are many, many others in the works as we speak. Mama always told me never to put all your eggs in one basket anyway, so I'm spreading my eggcitement across many cyber-nests.<br />
<br />
This is the bone I'm throwing to all of you this week: a list of 10 Midichlorian-free MMOs that have me -- and should have you -- extremely buzzed about their development. In putting together this list, I realized that there are so many promising prospects that I divided them into two groups. This week I'm presenting the strongest contenders that should make it to launch with a solid product, while next time I'll list promising prospects that may be more of a long shot. I'm 47% confident that I will not forget your most-anticipated title.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/the-perfect-ten-the-upcoming-contenders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: The upcoming contenders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/the-perfect-ten-the-upcoming-contenders/">The Perfect Ten: The upcoming contenders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST. Forum lurkers rejoice! There's a brand-new board for you to haunt, and it's kinda sorta related to an upcoming fantasy MMORPG. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling's</a> <a href="http://www.38studios.com/">38 Studios</a> has just published its community portal for <a href="http://www.reckoning.com/ag"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning,</em></a> and while the title isn't massively (or particularly multiplayer), it is affiliated with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38's</a> secretive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO.<br />
<br />
When we say affiliated, we mean that the two titles share the same fictional world, so lore junkies will want to bookmark the new boards and set about discussing histories, race lore, and anything else pertaining to the realm of Amalur.<br />
<br />
There's also the requisite community chat section in case you feel like a bit of the ol' ultraviolence with your fellow Amalurian forumites, so head to the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur"><em>Reckoning</em></a> site and register right away!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/30/38-studios-opens-reckoning-project-copernicus-forums/">38 Studios opens Reckoning/Project Copernicus forums</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 21:00:00 EST. As you pack your bags for that trip to the beach (or that annual fan gathering) and you toss in that bottle of sunblock (or aspirin), you might want to make some space in your bags for some summer reading as well. Fortunately, there is a growing number of titles, such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/24/the-guild-counsel-an-interview-with-author-adam-trzonkowski/">Adam Trzonkowski's Guild Leader's Companion</a>, that examine the methods and lessons of running guilds and online communities. To that list we can add <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/sean-stalzer">Sean "Dragons" Stalzer's</a> sequel, The Syndicate: Beyond the Legend, which is now <a href="http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-syndicate---beyond-the-legend/15919477">available at Lulu</a> and soon to be sold at <a href="http://www.amazon.com">Amazon</a>.<br />
<br />
In the book, guild leader Sean Stalzer picks up from where his first book left off and gives us even more insight into the MMO industry and his guild leadership philosophy. The book is divided into three parts. The first covers The Syndicate's recent history and continued relationship with several MMO studios as well its job writing guides for <a href="http://www.primagames.com/">Prima Games</a>. In the second part, Sean explains his time-tested philosophy for running a guild, dubbed S.U.C.C.E.S.S. And the last section of the book looks at where MMOs are headed and what's needed down the road.<br />
<br />
Sean took the time to talk to Massively about his new book, and there was so much to discuss that this interview is split into two parts. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-guild-counsel/">Guild Counsel</a>, Sean talks about the lessons he's learned from his work with MMO studios. He looks back at how it's influenced his leadership approach, and he gives a glimpse of why he's excited about his current work with <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a>. Read on for the interview!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/the-guild-counsel-an-interview-with-the-syndicates-sean-stalze/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Guild Counsel: An interview with The Syndicate's Sean Stalzer on his new book</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/the-guild-counsel-an-interview-with-the-syndicates-sean-stalze/">The Guild Counsel: An interview with The Syndicate's Sean Stalzer on his new book</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.38studios.com/">38 Studios</a> has been in the news quite a bit over the last year despite not having a released game under its belt. While the upstart company still lacks a finished product, it's one step closer with today's release of the first gameplay trailer for <a href="http://reckoningthegame.com/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The footage from the upcoming single-player RPG gives fans a first look at the world of Amalur, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> will revisit in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO to follow. In addition to featuring company president (and former World Series MVP) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning"><em>Reckoning</em></a> boasts an impressive array of talent from both 38 Studios and <a href="http://www.bighugegames.com/">Big Huge Games</a> including lore-master <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/r.a.-salvatore">R.A. Salvatore</a>, former <em>Morrowind</em> and <em>Oblivion</em> lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ken-rolston">Ken Rolston</a>, and Spawn creator <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-mcfarlane">Todd McFarlane</a>.<br />
<br />
The video clip showcases a good look at Amalur's fantasy trappings, glimpses of combat with several creatures (including a big bad), and a 2012 release date. Check out all the details after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/preview-the-world-of-copernicus-with-38-studios-kingdoms-of-ama/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview the world of Copernicus with 38 Studio's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/preview-the-world-of-copernicus-with-38-studios-kingdoms-of-ama/">Preview the world of Copernicus with 38 Studio's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Apr 2011 10:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/pax-east-2011">PAX East</a> panel that almost made me late for the <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> Meet 'n' Greet was a panel hosted by <a href="http://mmorpg.com">MMORPG.com</a> and featuring some of the heavy hitters in MMO development for this year. I am certainly glad I did not skip this one. This was the chance for the fans to hear what the future of MMOs will bring from the people who are making them.<br />
<br />
Let me give you a rundown of the panel members -- and tell me you don't just stand in awe of these guys: (from left to right) <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a>, the founder of <a href="http://38studios.com">38 Studios</a>; <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/craig-alexander">Craig Alexander</a>, the VP of Product Development for <a href="http://www.turbine.com/">Turbine</a>; <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/jeremy-gaffney">Jeremy Gaffney</a>, Executive Producer at <a href="http://www.carbinestudios.com">Carbine Studios</a>; <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/scott-hartsman">Scott Hartsman</a>, Executive Producer for <a href="http://www.trionworlds.com/en/">Trion Worlds</a>; <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/brian-knox">Brian Knox</a>, Senior Producer for <a href="http://enmasse.com/">En Masse Entertainment</a>; <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/james-ohlen">James Ohlen</a>, Creative Director for <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a>; and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a>, Lead Content Designer for <a href="http://www.arena.net/">ArenaNet</a>.<br />
<br />
The opening question really set the stage for the panel. It let us know where the minds of these producers and executives are. The question was simple: <em>Where do you see online games going in the next 10 years?</em> Follow after the cut to find out their thought provoking answers.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/17/pax-east-2011-the-future-of-mmos-from-the-mouths-of-the-develop/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2011: The future of MMOs from the mouths of the developers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/17/pax-east-2011-the-future-of-mmos-from-the-mouths-of-the-develop/">PAX East 2011: The future of MMOs from the mouths of the developers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 20:00:00 EST. Things are pretty quiet on the <a href="http://38studios.com/">38 Studios</a> front. That's rarely stopped <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a> from talking in the past, though, and he recently sat down with the lads at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/curt-schilling-on-38-studios-mmo-and-the-move-to-rhode-island/">Joystiq</a> during this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2011">GDC</a> to give everyone an update on the big Rhode Island move.<br />
<br />
"<em>The team is incredibly excited. It's our building! We have all six floors -- it's our studio and we're alone. It's our space</em>," Schilling enthused. Joystiq also queried the former World Series MVP about whether or not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a>' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO project might opt for a free-to-play business model in order to compete in what has become an extremely crowded game market.<br />
<br />
"<em>We have an open mind about everything, except the game," </em>Schilling said<em>. "We look at what we're creating and we say, 'What is the best possible guest experience we can create with this product?' And that'll answer your business model questions and your goals and objectives for the game</em>." Sooo, is that a yes-we're-considering-free-to-play or a not-in-a-million-years? It's anyone's guess at this point, but one thing's for sure: With Schilling at the controls, the trip is bound to be eventful (and full of juicy quotes).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/03/curt-schilling-talks-about-free-to-play-or-not/">GDC 2011: Curt Schilling talks about free-to-play, or not</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://38studios.com/">38 Studios</a> has kept its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> MMO under tight security for a while now; however, we do know that the studio has some big names in its pocket. Comic book giant <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-mcfarlane">Todd McFarlane</a>, award-winning author <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/r-a-salvatore">R.A. Salvatore</a>, and baseball great <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> have already added their talents to the roster. Even the government of the state of Rhode Island is excited about what this team is doing, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/13/rhode-island-pitches-a-75-m-loan-offer-to-38-studios/">given the guaranteed loans</a> 38 Studios was offered if it moved to the state.<br />
<br />
Today, Lead Community Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/charles-dane">Charles Dane</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/cmdane/status/37595146497298432">tweeted that the team is LFM</a>. He posted, "<em>38 Studios is looking for top tier talent. This is a great opportunity to join an awesome team!</em>" A buzz over to the <a href="http://38studios.com/jobs">jobs page for the studio</a> shows that it is looking for an abundance of people. QA, engineering, art, and even finance are on the list of departments needing minions. Who knows? Maybe you are the top-tier talent the studio is looking for.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/38-studios-is-looking-for-a-few-good-men-and-women-too-of-c/">38 Studios is looking for a few good men -- and women, too, of course!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 21:30:00 EST. Even though MMOs are the products of great teams of talented workers -- from sound artists to writers -- it's inevitable that a few of the people behind the curtain step out into the limelight. It's a smart move, really; it provides a personal face for people to associate with the game, it keeps messages consistent, and it draws any potential hate onto one person instead of the team at large.<br />
<br />
It stands to reason that these public figures end up being some of the major movers and shakers in the industry because of their high-profile positions. From CEOs to community managers, these are the people with power to make decisions, the voice to change opinions, and the personalities to inspire millions.<br />
<br />
Oh, that last sentence is pure poetry. Let's re-read it again, shall we?<br />
<br />
So in our last <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/perfect-ten/">Perfect Ten</a> of the year, I've asked the Massively team to compile a list of the 10 biggest MMO movers and shakers of this year. All of these people now owe us cupcakes of gratitude.
