So apparently it's gay pride week. I, pretty literally, had absolutely no clue that gay pride week was this week, even though I was lucky enough to speak at <em><a href="http://www.metaplace.com/">Metaplace</a></em>'s <a href="http://www.metaplace.com/community/metastream_event/1203795">Metapride diversity event</a>. Yes, I'm just that oblivious to my surroundings, even when I'm directly participating in them.<br /><br />I know I don't hide the fact that I'm transgender, but I'm certain that not many people <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/colin-brennan">click on my author link</a> here at Massively or really ponder the significance of my <a href="http://twitter.com/sera_brennan">@sera_brennan</a> Twitter username. That last sentence is probably the first time many of you long term readers even heard that I was transgender. (Although I remember someone wrote the site once and told them to correct all of the times in my author profile that I was referred to as "she" because it was obviously a typo.)<br /><br />I owe much to my online escapes, as they aid me in more ways than just providing a fun distraction. They give me the opportunity to appear as I truly feel inside, and let me interact with others without the stigma of being or appearing to be transgendered attached. According to <a href="http://www.cuppycake.org/?p=456">an announcement today</a>, their brand new temporary website is up to promote an expanded beta and their mailing list, both of which you can sign up for quite easily.<br /><br />To sign up, simply go to the main webpage and click on the <a href="http://www.metaplace.com/application">"Apply Now"</a> button on the upper left-hand side. From there, you just enter your name and email address, and they will contact you when they're ready. It's as easy as that! Lately, many game developers have made the decision to skip the forums and let the community sort itself out in that regard. This has allowed players to form their own social groups based on specific aspects of their favorite game, and hence develop <a href="http://www.presearing.com">forums centered</a> around those shared areas of <a href="http://www.guildwars.com">that game</a>. <br /><br />However, more and more developers are turning to this new-fangled blogging thing that we've heard so much about. <a href="http://www.cuppycake.org">Cuppycake</a>, while being an example of this herself (although she was a blogger long before she was the Community Manager for <a href="http://www.metaplace.com"><em>Metaplace</em></a>), makes <a href="http://www.cuppycake.org/?p=447">some excellent points</a> regarding the right and wrong way for developers to blog about the game they're involved with. The biggest example of this is with <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/">Mark Jacobs' recent blog</a> <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/2008/09/08/oh-what-a-night-late-on-sunday-back-in-008/">post</a> regarding the EU WAR beta public outrage. Ever want to tighten up the graphics in your own game or interactive environments without going to a video game design college? Okay bad joke, but that only a small part of the plan with Areae's <a href="http://www.metaplace.com"><em>MetaPlace</em></a>. The project envisioned by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raph_Koster">Raph Koster</a> will give users a dynamic platform and the accessibility to create embeddable shared virtual spaces, interactive games, and or a mish-mashing combination. News has been light but there are some new <a href="http://www.metaplace.com/blog/66.html">updates on the latest <em>MetaPlace</em> blog</a>. Tami "Cuppycake" Baribeau shares some development accomplishments that took place over the past year and states <em>MetaPlace</em> is nearing the first closed beta stage! <br /><br />What's genius is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/metaplace-designers-seek-users-advice-for-badge-system/">planned badge and achievement system</a> intended to encourage user participation. The more users share creations, explore, customize, invite, and participate in numerous other activities they'll unlock badges. No, they won't be stored away in a virtual closed account space all sad and lonely. Instead your friends can check them out and probably earn a badge in the process. Who knows what will end up unlocking a badge, but we love collecting things. In a recent post, blogger Cuppycake <a href="http://www.cuppycake.org/?p=378">asked a very prescient question</a> that we thought we would relate to you. What's more important to the long-term success of an MMO title: the quantity of content at launch or a high-level of polish? The way development works these days, developers are often hard-pressed to finish a game on a deadline, and at some point they have to make the decision whether to keep implementing new features, zones, and graphical assets, or go back and refine the content they have to make sure it's perfect.
