A game like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MechWarrior-Online/">MechWarrior Online</a></em> positively screams for a good graphical engine. You want something that can show you every single scorch mark you leave on your enemy's chassis, after all. So if you're one of the many players looking forward to getting into the cockpit, you'll be happy to know that the game has just such an engine for its graphics. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Piranha-Games/">Piranha Games</a> officially announced today that the game <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2011/11/28-cryengine3-powers-mechwarrior-online">will be using the CryEngine 3 by Crytek</a>.<br />
<br />
According to the company's president, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Russ-Bullock/">Russ Bullock</a>, the engine perfectly delivers the functionality that the team was looking for, especially in the realm of physics-based modeling. It's all but an assurance that whatever else might be right or wrong with the game, a salvo of LRMs will still produce an appropriately satisfying fireball and falling debris. Unfortunately, players will still have to wait some time to see the graphics in action -- but with any luck, they'll be worth the wait.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/17/mechwarrior-online-to-use-the-cryengine/">MechWarrior Online to use the CryEngine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 19:00:00 EST. The end of September marked a graduation of sorts for members of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/undead-labs">Undead Labs</a> development team. The company's untitled maiden voyage has officially crossed the threshold from pre-production to in production, and a <a href="http://undeadlabs.com/2011/09/news/some-days-are-just-pure-win/">blog post</a> on the firm's web site celebrates the milestone with something of a rah-rah speech from founder <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-strain">Jeff Strain</a>.<br />
<br />
"I'm blown away by how far we've come in such a short amount of time. Our task now as we move headlong into the production phase is to take this fun little gem and turn it into something we're proud to show the world," Strain wrote.<br />
<br />
The gem he's referring to is currently known only by its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/class3"><em>Class3</em></a> codename. We do know that it's about zombies and that it's only for consoles. Aside from that, the title is shrouded in a fair bit of mystery. Strain's post also features a time-lapse video that shows off the game's CryEngine 3-powered time-of-day effects, and you can check that out after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/03/undead-labs-moving-right-along-with-class3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Undead Labs moving right along with Class3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/03/undead-labs-moving-right-along-with-class3/">Undead Labs moving right along with Class3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 03 Oct 2011 10:00:00 EST. Following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/undead-labs-art-director-talks-about-the-heart-of-horror/">last week's dev diary</a> featuring <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/undead-labs">Undead Labs</a>' art director <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/doug-williams">Doug Williams</a> and his talk on the "heart of horror," the most recent dev diary from the studio shifts in a more technical direction. In particular, executive producer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/jeff-strain"><span class="newsTitle">Jeff Strain</span></a> focuses on the game's engine. Even more particularly, he announces that the tentatively named <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/jeff3">Class3</a></em> will be running on the powerful CryENGINE 3.<br />
	<br />
	Of course, the devs over at Undead Labs are quite familiar with the traditions of the internet and anticipate shouts of "pics or it didn't happen" with a lovely screenshot from an early version of the game. But wait, there's more! Call now and you'll receive not just a single screenshot, but an entire video! Just click past the break and check out an early version of Undead Labs' <em>Class3 </em>in action, then skip on over to the dev blog to read the full entry.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/19/undead-labs-brings-class3-to-un-life-with-cryengine-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Undead Labs brings Class3 to (un)life with CryENGINE 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/19/undead-labs-brings-class3-to-un-life-with-cryengine-3/">Undead Labs brings Class3 to (un)life with CryENGINE 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 18:30:00 EST. Last month we brought you a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/07/asta-showing-off-its-cryengine3-visuals-at-gamescom/">brief blurb</a> about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/asta"><em>ASTA</em></a>, the new fantasy MMORPG from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nhn">NHN</a>. The CryEngine3-powered title is making its official debut at this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2011">Gamescom</a> in Cologne, Germany, and a six-minute video trailer has surfaced that shows off quite a bit of detail about the new title.<br />
<br />
The clip features a lot of concept art, behind-the-scenes shots, and talking-head developer interviews as well as an English-dubbed voiceover that's heavy on lore and backstory bits. There's also a lot of commentary regarding <em>ASTA's</em> design philosophy as well as how the developers are striving to avoid Asian MMO cliches to create a title that is original yet familiar.<br />
<br />
Finally, the video lets us in on the fact that <em>ASTA</em> is aimed at players "who are not very good at controlling the keyboard and the mouse simultaneously." Despite its apparent simplicity, <em>ASTA</em> will be featuring RvR and PvP mechanics designed specifically to facilitate large-scale conflict rather than small-party skirmishes or duels. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> fans may be interested to know that the <em>ASTA</em> video specifically references the older title as inspirational material, and you can find that and more after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/gamescom-2011-asta-video-talks-design-philosophy-and-daoc-inspi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamescom 2011: ASTA video talks design philosophy and DAoC inspiration</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/17/gamescom-2011-asta-video-talks-design-philosophy-and-daoc-inspi/">Gamescom 2011: ASTA video talks design philosophy and DAoC inspiration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. If you've never been to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom/">Gamescom</a> before, let's simply put it this way: It's <em>big</em>. Really, really big. Forget most any convention you've attended; this is likely to be even bigger. Billing itself as the world's largest games event, Gamescom sees well over a quarter-million fans, journalists and exhibitors crowd into the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany to check out hundreds of games and companies.<br />
<br />
Due to its size and worldwide prominence, Gamescom is a significant event for anyone following the MMO genre (and video games in general). There are plenty of MMO studios gearing up to share first looks, exclusive reveals, detailed Q&amp;A sessions, and exciting hands-on demos for attendees.<br />
<br />
Naturally, Massively will be paying close attention to all of the news coming out of Gamescom this week. For those attending the convention or merely looking to keep abreast of all of the games, studios, and information forthcoming, we've compiled a guide to the hottest tickets at Gamescom as well as a comprehensive exhibitor list of MMO studios after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/massivelys-guide-to-gamescom/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's guide to Gamescom 2011</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/massivelys-guide-to-gamescom/">Massively's guide to Gamescom 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. If you were fortunate enough to attend this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2011">GDC</a>, it's possible you caught a glimpse of <a href="http://asta.hangame.com/micro/index.nhn?lang=en"><em>ASTA</em></a>, the new fantasy MMO from <a href="http://www.nhnusainc.com/usa/index.nhn">NHN</a>. The title, formerly known as <em>Project E:st</em>, is powered by the CryEngine3 and boasts some of the more impressive visuals in the MMO space.<br />
<br />
Assuming you can make it to Cologne, Germany, for this year's <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> (August 17th through the 21st), you'll get another opportunity to see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/asta"><em>ASTA</em></a> in action since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nhn">NHN</a> will be offering visitors "<em>a first look at the captivating world [...] as well as the opportunity to chat with the developers and learn more about character development, guild evolution, competitive play, and many other features</em>," according to a new press release.<br />
<br />
<em>ASTA</em> is being developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/polygon-games">Polygon Games</a> (which includes a core group of designers who previously worked on <a href="http://www.playrohan.com/LandingSite/20110419/"><em>Rohan: Blood Feud</em></a>), and it takes place in a world inspired by Asian myth. Gameplay elements include realm vs. realm, PvE questing, raids, and crafting.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/07/asta-showing-off-its-cryengine3-visuals-at-gamescom/">ASTA showing off its CryEngine3 visuals at Gamescom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 12:30:00 EST. Development on <a href="http://www.xlgames.com/">XL Games</a>' <a href="http://www.archeage.com/en"><em>ArcheAge</em></a> continues apace, and several fan sites are reporting that the fantasy sandbox MMORPG will be adding a spiffy new graphics engine to its lengthy list of features. Prior to this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2011">GDC</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arche-age"><em>ArcheAge</em></a> was being marketed as a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryEngine_2">CryEngine 2</a> title -- and was already somewhat renowned for its lush visuals and hyper-detailed environments.<br />
<br />
Apparently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XL</a> and lead developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jake-song">Jake Song</a> saw room for improvement, though, since <em>ArcheAge</em> will be transitioning to <a href="http://crytek.com/cryengine/cryengine3/overview">CryEngine 3</a> according to a reputable South Korean gaming <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/go/?p=3286">news website</a>. There is also some <a href="http://archeage-online.com/post/1718108736">fan</a> <a href="http://www.aaportal.net/en/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=125:cryengine3-archeage-xlgames&amp;catid=38:news&amp;Itemid=123">speculation</a> regarding when the new engine will see the light of day. <em>ArcheAge</em> will be kicking off its third Korean closed beta phase in April (still using CryEngine 2), with deployment on the newer technology coming later this year (and possibly coinciding with open beta).<br />
<br />
Head past the cut for a CryEngine 3 <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrW9upBMq_M&amp;feature=player_embedded#at=143">demo video</a> from this year's GDC (the <em>ArcheAge</em> footage begins at the two-minute mark).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/archeage-upgrading-to-cryengine-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ArcheAge upgrading to CryEngine 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/archeage-upgrading-to-cryengine-3/">ArcheAge upgrading to CryEngine 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. Students of video game design in the United Kingdom should be doing back flips after hearing that <a href="http://massively.com/tag/crytek">Crytek</a> is donating their CryEngine free of charge <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/crytek-to-make-cryengine-free-to-uk-universities">to all universities in the country</a>. CryEngine is most famously known as the graphics engine behind visually stunning titles such as <a href="http://games.ea.com/crysis/"><em>Crysis</em></a> and <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>.<br /><br />This is really big news because only the priciest universities tend to license high quality software for their students to learn on. They're the only ones that can afford it. It's also great for students to dream up pie in the sky concepts for games, but knowing what's practical in the real world is essential. <em>"Universities are looking to foster creativity and send people out into the industry who have lots of ideas, but it's also about that practical hands-on training so that they know what the limitations are,"</em> says Managing Director of <a href="http://crytek.com">Crytek</a> UK <a href="http://massively.com/tag/karl-hilton">Karl Hilton</a>. <em>"It's very easy for students to come out of the academic world and not have a grasp on the realities of making a video game."</em><br /><br />We hope more MMOs are released with CryEngine due to its stellar performance and scalability and it would be great if other graphics engine companies followed suit to increase the options in our genre.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/cryteks-cryengine-in-uk-classrooms/">Crytek's CryEngine in UK classrooms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 20:00:00 EST.
