<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dust-514">DUST 514</a> may be a PlayStation 3 exclusive for the moment, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a> has confirmed that the title will offer USB keyboard and mouse control options. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-jian">CCP Jian</a> broke the news late last night on his <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/CCP_Jian/status/166730014933516289">Twitter account</a>, though there's no word as of yet on whether using a keyboard/mouse combo will translate to an edge over players who are using a PS3 controller.<br />

<em>DUST</em> is a sci-fi MMOFPS set in CCP's New Eden universe, and it is directly connected to the long-running <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> MMORPG. Players take on the role of ground-based mercenaries who fight for territory control and share the universal economy with <em>EVE's</em> capsuleers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/07/ccp-confirms-keyboard-and-mouse-control-for-dust-514/">CCP confirms keyboard and mouse control for DUST 514</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 09:30:00 EST. Every game has certain classes that seem unique. I don't mean to suggest that the rest of <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> isn't unique, but when the game launched, the Controller was definitely in a league by itself. Time has shown that the Mastermind's personal army makes the archetype a bit more uncommon than a class focusing on holds and control elements, but the Controller was pretty unique stuff when the game launched almost seven years ago. Or at least, it was to me. Other audience members may feel differently.<br />
<br />
These days, with the trinity in most games having supplanted any unique roles, it's even more odd to think of "support" as a party role to be filled. But we're not here to talk about the gradual erosion of what was once a far more robust party structure; we're here to talk about Controllers. They're one of the original heroic archetypes, and they're also a very odd class from a design perspective, with a lot of offensive abilities but very little direct punch. So whether you are new to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/">City of Heroes</a></em> or just have never played with a hold set before, click on past the break for a look at what makes the archetype tick.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/a-mild-mannered-reporter-in-the-case-of-controllers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: In the case of Controllers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/13/a-mild-mannered-reporter-in-the-case-of-controllers/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: In the case of Controllers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Apr 2011 19:30:00 EST. Love them or loathe them, it seems console controllers and MMORPGs are a match increasingly made in developer heaven. <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> was designed from the ground up to allow players to toss their keyboards, and now <a href="http://enmasse.com">En Masse Entertainment's</a> <a href="http://tera-online.com"><em>TERA</em></a> is looking to join the party, according to a new dev diary by producer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/stefan-ramirez">Stefan Ramirez</a>.<br />
<br />
Ramirez details the genesis of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a> controller experiment, outlining its tentative beginnings through a successful demo at last year's Game Developer Conference. "<em>We were very excited to see that people wanted this. </em>TERA's<em> combat is something that can be played on both the keyboard and mouse, and controller, equally. It's fun, fast, and just plain feels right</em>," he recently told <a href="http://mmorpg.gamezone.com/editorials/item/tera_dev_diary_action_mmo_combat_keyboard_controller_benefits/">GameZone</a>.<br />
<br />
Ramirez acknowledges that some testers (and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse">En Masse</a> devs) still prefer the traditional mouse/keyboard combo, but he also hints at something of a minor revolution in MMO control schemes, thanks to the pairing of <em>TERA's</em> action combat with the player's choice of controller. "<em>This could help blur that [PC vs. console] line a little more</em>," he says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/tera-producer-talks-console-controllers/">TERA producer talks console controllers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 13:30:00 EST. This week I'm actually going to detour slightly from the game and instead feature one of my favorite hacks for playing <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. Well, OK, not a hack -- more like a fun project for the nerdily inclined. Part of the reason I've decided to detour is an email I received earlier this week from Rusty, who asked: "<em>I am very interested in trying the controller on my PC and would welcome your opinion on the best way to accomplish this. I'm leery of downloading software to make this happen. Would you mind sharing your experience?</em>" <br />
<br />
As such, this week I'm dedicating my column to helping my fellow PC fiends get their controller on in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em>. Depending on your personal level of hardware nerditry, your extant pieces/parts, and your budget, this can range from incredibly inexpensive on up to ridiculously awesome. Hungry for more? Join me after the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/05/alter-ego-using-a-controller-with-dc-universe-online-on-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alter-Ego: Using a controller with DC Universe Online on PC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/05/alter-ego-using-a-controller-with-dc-universe-online-on-pc/">Alter-Ego: Using a controller with DC Universe Online on PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 05 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. <p>Stephanie Walker was a gamer who had never expected to have to deal with <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/the-heron-sanctuary-helps-the-disabled-find-a-second-life/" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/the-heron-sanctuary-helps-the-disabled-find-a-second-life/">a disability</a>. She was 23 at the onset of her condition, a college student who also worked a full-time job. She liked to spend the little free time she had unwinding online. Initially resistant to the idea of playing <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/" href="http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, Stephanie quickly discovered that <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/confronting-the-grind-and-finding-it-in-ourselves/" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/confronting-the-grind-and-finding-it-in-ourselves/">slaying virtual orcs and bandits</a> while joking around in party chat was surprisingly fun. It was a great way to keep in touch with long-distance friends and <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/can-you-fight-stress-in-second-life/" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/can-you-fight-stress-in-second-life/">burn some stress</a> after a long day. She didn't have a lot of time to play, but she was good at it when she did.</p>
<p>While working at her job one day, Stephanie noticed that her right hand and leg had fallen asleep. When she tried to get up to walk the sensation off, she realized that something was seriously wrong -- the entire right side of her body had just stopped working. Stephanie was rushed to the hospital, and the diagnosis was confirmed the following morning: she had <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sclerosis" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_sclerosis">multiple sclerosis</a>, and she would have to deal with it for the rest of her life. Overnight, everything changed. She went from being someone who spent 20 hours per day away from home to someone who really never left. Moving around within her house required an enormous effort on her part. Even feeding herself had become a challenge. The little things, like not being able to get online and <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/player-vs-everything-playing-with-your-friends/" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/player-vs-everything-playing-with-your-friends/">chat with her friends</a> (something she really enjoyed) just made her situation that much more painful.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/player-vs-everything-gaming-with-a-disability/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Player vs. Everything: Gaming with a disability</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/player-vs-everything-gaming-with-a-disability/">Player vs. Everything: Gaming with a disability</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST.
