	We know you're all still enthralled by <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard's</a> latest blockbuster, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/diablo-iii">Diablo III</a></em>, but it's important to remember that it's not the only major dungeon-crawler hitting the market this year. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/runic-games">Runic Games'</a> <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/torchlight-ii">Torchlight II</a></em> is also slated for release, and it's sure to offer plenty of dungeon-delving, loot-gathering goodness as well.<br />
	<br />
	But the real question is, how do the two games stack up against one another? The Ancient Gaming Noob has decided to pit the two titles against each other in a no-holds-barred Thunderdome deathmatch to see which game emerges victorious!<br />
	<br />
	On one hand, you have <em>Diablo III</em>'s simplified method of character progression utilizing runes and a number of skill combinations, and on the other hand, there's <em>Torchlight II</em>'s more traditional talent trees and attribute points. Atmosphere (bright and colorful vs. dark and dreary is a battle for the ages), story, and gameplay are all matters of contention between the two, and each category receives ample coverage, providing a detailed look at the similarities and contrasts between the titles. If you're unsure which dungeon-crawler you want to swear allegiance to, head on over and give the full piece a read for a bit of help in the decision-making process.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/diablo-iii-vs-torchlight-ii-battle-of-the-dungeon-crawlers/">Diablo III vs. Torchlight II: Battle of the dungeon-crawlers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 13:30:00 EST. As many <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> players know, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> takes place in the same world and often in the same areas -- just 250 years after its predecessor. Because of this, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> elected not to wipe the slate clean and start over with 100% new environments but instead to incorporate old locales and landmarks into its upcoming game.<br />
<br />
<em>Guild Wars</em> fan Claire became fascinated with this concept and has dedicated a new blog to documenting all of the visual changes in the world between the first and second game. It's called <a href="http://projecttyria.blogspot.ca/">Project Tyria</a>, and each post consists of several <em>Guild Wars </em>locales contrasted with screenshots of the same areas from the sequel.<br />
<br />
Claire writes, "I've always loved the graphics of the <em>Guild Wars</em> games and have grown to love the world of Tyria. We were there in the before times, and now we arrive again in the after."<br />
<br />
It's fascinating to see how ArenaNet has envisioned 250 years taking its toll on the monuments, cities, and vales of the original game; realizing the importance of keeping the world accurate for the hardcore fans seems to be a noted priority for the team. Head over to <a href="http://projecttyria.blogspot.ca/">Project Tyria</a> to see more on the comparison screenshots.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/fan-documents-visual-changes-between-guild-wars-and-guild-wars-2/">Fan documents visual changes between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. <em>The second </em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2</a><em> press beta weekend has come and gone, and Massively was there every step of the way. Stay tuned throughout the day today for even more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-wars-2-beta">guides, impressions, videos, and Q&amp;As</a> to get you ready for the highly anticipated sequel to </em><a href="http://www.guildwars.com">Guild Wars</a><em>.</em><br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> is on the way (when it's ready), and classic <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars/">Guild Wars</a></em> players probably understand that soon they'll be competing with a younger sibling -- a smarter, more attractive one who's sure to get more of mom's attention. And while we're sure that some of the more stalwart <em>Guild Wars 2</em> fans are also <em>Guild Wars</em> players, not all veterans of the first edition are dedicated to licking up every drop of sequel info squeezed out of blogs, conventions, and betas. Those veterans might just be wondering, what exactly can <em>Guild Wars 2</em> offer them, other than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hall-of-Monuments/">Hall of Monuments</a> tie-ins? What's changed? What's the same? What will they love, what will they hate, and what could possibly make them jump ship to the new hotness?<br />
<br />
The first and most important thing you must know is that yes, you can jump in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>! Seriously, though, jumping is more than just a thing you do with your spacebar when you're bored; it's a symbol of <em>boundlessness</em>. <em>Guild Wars 2</em> itself is trying to jump a lot higher than its elder brother, and probably the essential difference between the games is that feeling that the walls have come down and gravity is letting loose. That alone should urge classic players to take a peek, but if that's not enough for you, fire up your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Soule/">Jeremy Soule</a> soundtracks (yes, he's onboard for an encore!) and read on...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/making-the-jump-from-guild-wars-to-guild-wars-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Making the 'jump' from Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/making-the-jump-from-guild-wars-to-guild-wars-2/">Making the 'jump' from Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Mar 2012 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/diablo-iii"><em>Diablo III</em></a>? Or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/torchlight-ii"><em>Torchlight II</em></a>? If you can't decide which 2012 action RPG will reign supreme on your desktop, perhaps it's because you haven't compared each game's features side by side.<br />
<br />
GameArena has made that task quite a bit easier thanks to a comprehensive new infographic that appeared earlier this week. Whether you need a quick glance at the games' classes, a breakdown of the various single- and multiplayer options, or a look at intangibles like the modability and offline play of <em>Torchlight II</em>, the infographic has you covered.<br />

It's coming. In just a few weeks, <em><a href="http://www.swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em> will launch, and on every gamer's mind is the subject of how many players it will lure away from other games. It's quite likely that every MMO will suffer a dip in numbers when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> launches -- heck, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/21/analyst-downgrades-blizzard-stock-in-anticipation-of-swtor-launc/">even <em>World of Warcraft</em> is bracing for impact</a> with a stock downgrade. But as gamers know, a launch is one thing, but how a game does in the months after is more important.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Enter-at-Your-Own-Rift/">Enter at Your Own Rift</a>, I'm going to grab that third rail and look at a few ways in which <em>SWTOR </em>and <a href="http://www.riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> differ, to see what effect <em>SWTOR's</em> launch might have on the game. Keep in mind that I am a fan of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/RIFT/">RIFT</a> </em>(hence the regular column), and I also really enjoyed my time in <em>SWTOR's</em> beta, have it pre-ordered, and plan to play the game when it launches. So I'm not saying one is better than the other; rather, I'm looking at differences that might appeal to one playstyle over another.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/23/enter-at-your-own-rift-will-rift-survive-the-swtoracolypse/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Enter at Your Own Rift: Will RIFT survive the SWTORacolypse?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/23/enter-at-your-own-rift-will-rift-survive-the-swtoracolypse/">Enter at Your Own Rift: Will RIFT survive the SWTORacolypse?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 13:00:00 EST. One thing I've been asked, on occasion, is whether or not I'm ever going to run out of things to write about <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> so long as the game is still live and getting updates. The answer, in a word, is "no" -- I started writing when the game was already fast approaching its sixth anniversary, and with everything that's changed since then, I still don't think I can possibly tackle everything under the game's banner.<br />
<br />
But that having been said, there are also things that I naturally find more interesting than others. PvP is a fine example. I've stated before that I have zero interest in the game's PvP scene beyond an academic curiosity, although I definitely do want the players who <em>are</em> interested to be happy. (They aren't, in case you weren't aware.) And if there's one thing I'm being reminded of recently, it's that there's a certain charm to letting things go out of your hands and letting the readers pick out what you're doing.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/16/a-mild-mannered-reporter-topical-cannon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Topical cannon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/16/a-mild-mannered-reporter-topical-cannon/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Topical cannon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST. This week I want to switch from the general optimism of last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/19/the-road-to-mordor-not-all-who-wander-are-lost/">forecast and future suggestions</a> to something that's been troubling me the more we read about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-road-to-mordor/"><em>Rise of Isengard</em></a>.<br />
<br />
To put it frankly, it's coming across as an unfinished expansion. An expansion with promise, but one that needs a little more... <em>oomph</em>, for lack of a better grunt. More of an "it" factor, if you will.<br />
<br />
Am I excited about <em>Isengard</em>? Oh, most definitely; that's not in question. I'm looking forward to exploring new lands, to meeting new people, and to killing pretty much everything in sight. I wouldn't kill them, but they're refusing to give me that loot, see? I'm pumped for skill consolidation, giving Saruman a taste of rebellion, and a new book in the epic storyline. I'm not going to be complaining come September 27th, I can tell you that.<br />
<br />
And yet, I have to be up front and voice a few concerns that need to be said, even if it's just me being a worry-wart. I've been concerned that <em>Isengard </em>is not going to be up to the standards set by previous expansions, and perhaps there are forces of time, pressure, and external competition that have caused this to not measure up to true potential.<br />
<br />
Hit the jump and follow my convoluted line of thought, and see if you come to the same conclusion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/the-road-to-mordor-the-unfinished-expansion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: The unfinished expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/26/the-road-to-mordor-the-unfinished-expansion/">The Road to Mordor: The unfinished expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST. I was prepping for a <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> comparison with <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a>, but in light of the current buzz in the air, I'm moving my <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> comparison up.<br />
<br />
A couple of interesting blocks fell into place this week that fit well with a look at how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>RoM</em></a> allow money to circulate through the economies, and how PvP works in conjunction with it. While there's no contest as to which MMO has the more robust economy, there are still similarities that fit the pay-to-progress comment Mr. Simon Ludgate made in a recent <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6421/the_fwords_of_mmorpgs_fairness.php?page=1">Gamasutra article</a>.<br />
<br />
Swarming around the above topics is the question of how much it costs to stay competitive in <em>RoM,</em> which I've also been working on. What does Gamasutra's article have to do with <em>RoM</em>, how much does it cost to be competitive and how are economies similar in these two MMOs? You can also read my memorandum to all <em>EVE</em> PvPers. Set your jump-point past the break to see.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/lost-pages-of-taborea-comparing-eves-plex-and-pvp-to-roms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lost Pages of Taborea: Comparing EVE's PLEX and PvP to RoM's</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/lost-pages-of-taborea-comparing-eves-plex-and-pvp-to-roms/">Lost Pages of Taborea: Comparing EVE's PLEX and PvP to RoM's</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. On Friday, our friends on the <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> community team gave us <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/star-wars-the-old-republic-reintroduces-the-bounty-hunter-progr/">a second progression video</a> for the Bounty Hunter in <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. As with anything on the internet, the video wasn't above scrutiny and complaint by followers. The complaints ranged from "we already have a Bounty Hunter progression video" to "why don't we have a Jedi Consular video yet?" But that doesn't hit on the real issue: There were no fiery explosions for the Bounty Hunter to walk away from in slow motion! He just can't be cool unless he turns his back on the destruction like he just doesn't frelling care.<br />
<br />
Despite the lack of carnage in the class progression video, we did glean insight into many of the class powers, some of which mirror its Republic counterpart: the Trooper. I know for marketing reasons and to keep from confusing the potential player, it's not a good idea to use the word "mirror" when describing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>The Old Republic</em></a> classes. But it's hard to deny that the Imperial Bounty Hunter and the Republic Trooper are very much mirrored insofar as combat roles and abilities. After the break, I will explain to you what I see that is the same and what is different between the two classes. Then, in the end, I will let you decide whether the classes are truly mirrored or not.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/hyperspace-beacon-man-in-the-mirror/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Man in the mirror</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/hyperspace-beacon-man-in-the-mirror/">Hyperspace Beacon: Man in the mirror</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 16:30:00 EST. Once again, I have managed to very effectively shoot my plans in the foot. Last week I promised that I'd be doing my year-in-review post this week, only to find on closer examination that I had missed a week in my column numbering over the past year, which means that I'm still one week shy to be doing a year in review, and while I could still write it up on the pretense of "close enough"... well, that's kind of a cop-out, right? Better to do that at the right time.<br />
<br />
This is all well and good, but it does mean that my original plans for this week's column are pretty well blown to pieces. So instead, I'm going to spotlight two live events that have been going down in two of my games of choice -- the Praetorian Invasion in <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>, and the heralds of doom popping up hither and yon in <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>. They're interesting to look at from the perspective of roleplaying, since both of them support and stymie roleplaying in different ways, and they're useful case studies for live events in general.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/storyboard-all-the-way-live/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Storyboard: All the way live</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/storyboard-all-the-way-live/">Storyboard: All the way live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 May 2011 09:00:00 EST. The first thing you should bear in mind is that he has not played <em>Aion</em> all the way through to the end game, even though he has "finished" both other MMOs. The second thing of note is that these points of comparison were requested by his readers.<br /><br />Even if one has not played <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>'s end game, one can still make a valid comparison of certain aspects of it -- one just can't compare everything. There are a couple points where Keen defers to others who have more experience with the Korean servers and Chinese beta. <br /><br />Even with the level 20 North American beta cap (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/get-your-keys-for-the-third-aion-beta-weekend-before-theyre-go/">weekend #3</a>), you'll get a pretty strong sense of where <em>Aion</em> is going because that level is 40% of the way to cap. Head on over to Keen's two blog posts (<a href="http://www.keenandgraev.com/?p=2682"><em>Aion</em> vs. <em>WoW</em></a> and <a href="http://www.keenandgraev.com/?p=2673"><em>Aion</em> vs. <em>WAR</em></a>) and see for yourself. The comments are loaded with good information too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/09/blogger-compares-aion-to-wow-and-war/">Blogger compares Aion to WoW and WAR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST. Heck, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/the-war-of-words-for-sonys-home-and-second-life-users-begins/">creative director spoke about it months ago</a> stating that <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a> players would probably not find much of interest in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/playstation-home">PS Home</a></em>. Well, Kotaku has stepped in to explore just that subject.<br /><br />For those not wanting to get too down and dirty with the full tale, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> has much more personal customization. Everything from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/linden-lab-doubles-back-on-approved-skins/">outfits</a> to dance moves to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/linden-lab-introduces-new-land-product-changes-for-void-simulat/">land masses</a> can be user-generated and added to the world. On the other hand, <em>PlayStation Home</em> allows for minimal add-ons, focusing on creating rich, stable environments - even if that means sacrificing little things like avatar diversity. But with much more content promised, <em>PS Home</em> may well become a better contender for virtual world time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/03/kotaku-outlines-differences-between-playstation-home-and-second/">Kotaku outlines differences between PlayStation Home and Second Life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 03 Jan 2009 15:00:00 EST. Unless money or time is not an issue (or you write about games for a living), you have quite a decision to make this week. <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>'s second expansion, <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a>, has released yesterday. <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>'s first expansion, <a href="http://www.lotro.com/moria"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a>, is releasing this Tuesday. They both promise to be revolutionary expansions, and the fact that their launch dates are within a week of each other most likely means that you won't be playing both. Well, we're here to help bridge that gap a bit.<br /><br />While both games are considered high fantasy, and many of the features of both games could be considered very similar, actually comparing the two is a whole different story. In this feature article, we're going to break down and compare the two games and what they have to offer. Whether you're a <em>LotRO</em> fan who makes a little cross with your fingers every time someone mentions <em>WoW</em>, or you're a <em>WoW</em> player who thinks "Hobits r dum!", we'll let you know what you would have to look forward to in either game and their new expansions. Follow along through the link below!<br /><br />

There's no denying the similarities between the <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Lord">Guild Lord</a> in <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> and the Keep Lord in <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>. They're fundamentally the same, whether you're involved in a Guild vs. Guild battle or a Keep assault, when you kill the Guild/Keep Lord, it's all over. In <a href="http://www.killtenrats.com/2008/11/06/guild-lord-vs-keep-lord/">a recent article at Kill Ten Rats</a>, the basic comparison is brought to the next level with an actual explanation of each category of comparisons, from Best Style to Best Loot System to Best Glory for the Winner.<br /><br />So if this aspect of either or both games has ever intrigued you, check out this article for some interesting analysis. Then next time you head out for that main assault on the Keep/Guild Hall, you'll be that much more prepared!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/comparing-gws-guild-lord-to-wars-keep-lord/">Comparing GW's Guild Lord to WAR's Keep Lord</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. Today we return to a debate that simply will not die. Gaming blog <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com">Rock, Paper, Shotgun</a> -- a very smart blog that is a combination of progressive and traditionalist, if that makes any sense at all -- felt the need to defend itself after it <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/06/26/war-wars/">previewed <em>Warhammer Online</em></a> and made numerous comparisons to <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em>.</a> It even inserted a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> screenshot as a joke.<br /><br />If you've been following this debate (which already <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/06/26/war-wars/">reached</a> a <a href="http://tobolds.blogspot.com/2008/06/wow.html">raging</a> <a href="http://www.keenandgraev.com/?p=1103">napalmic</a> <a href="http://waaagh.wordpress.com/2008/06/21/im-feeling-snarky/">inferno</a> of internet vitriol when Richard Bartle compared the games in an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/richard-bartle-on-how-hed-make-world-of-warcraft-better/">interview with us</a>) then you know that RPS was just asking for trouble. And trouble it got, in the order of <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/08/22/rps-impressions-warhammer-online-beta/#comments">more than 200 comments.</a><br /><br />The latest development: RPS blogger Alec Meer wrote a <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/06/a-dirty-word/">personal, diplomatic, and even impassioned post</a> in which he attempted both to defend the comparison and to defend <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>WAR</em></a> in the face of said comparison. He also tried to explain why the connection infuriates <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> fans so much. The money quote: "Telling a <em>WAR</em> player that his game is similar to <em>WoW</em> is like telling a goth that he's emo." Needless to say, it's worth a read. <hr />

<a href="http://www.siliconknights.com/">Silicon Knights</a> President Dennis Dyack is apparently a balanced gamer. Sure, he's worked on games like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_Omen:_Legacy_of_Kain"><em>Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain</em></a> and he's president of the company behind the big Xbox 360 exclusive <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/splash/t/toohuman/"><em>Too Human</em>.</a> But it would appear that he's also a connoisseur of MMOs.<br /><br />He <a href="http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/08/26/dyack-eves-better-than-wow/">told videogaming247</a> that <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is (for him, at least) a better game than <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em>.</a> "I know it's a lot harder core," he said, "but the depth of it's unparalleled and I love it." It's been mentioned again and again how different the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> experiences are. They represent two fundamentally opposing game design philosophies. That serves as a reminder that this genre can be potentially achieve more than the treadmill-loving, fantasy RPG style it has become known for.<br /><br />But Dyack had one complaint that applied to both titles. "I have to ... force myself to stop playing those games because it takes too much time," he said. That seems to be a problem with MMOs in general -- especially ones that use the subscription model. <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> and <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a> want you to invest as much time as possible into the game so you'll stay subscribed, right? Looks like it backfired in Dyack's case. We wouldn't be surprised if it alienated a lot of other potential subscribers as well. <hr />

Here we are, looking the official retail launch of <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> right in the eyes, and we have to ask ourselves: will <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/">Age of Conan</a></em> deliver on the promise of this 80's cinema staple? From everything we've seen <em>AoC</em> delivers in regards to action, scenic beauty, gameplay and excitement. If you have the computer muscle, this will be a gaming tour-de-force. Just the same, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_schwarzenegger">Arnold Schwarzenegger</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_the_Barbarian_%28film%29">Conan movies</a> are writ large in your mind. You may still have lingering questions.<br /><br />Today, we'll put those questions to rest. We've compared five aspects of the game versus the film classics. Not only that, but we've kept score. Plus, as an added treat, each argument in the movie's defense includes a wonderfully cheesy video clip to get that full effect. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/814622/">Read on to see who wins: the Austrian all-star or the Norwegian newcomer?</a><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/">Conan vs. Conan</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/#814622"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/aoc_mountedcombat_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Mounted Combat: The Game" title="Mounted Combat: The Game" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/#814637"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/moviemounted_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Mounted Combat: The Movies" title="Mounted Combat: The Movies" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/#814634"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/aoclore_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Staying True to the Lore: The Game" title="Staying True to the Lore: The Game" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/#814639"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/moviethulsa_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Staying True to the Lore: The Movies" title="Staying True to the Lore: The Movies" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/conan-game-vs-movie-visual-comparisons/#814624"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/05/aocaccent_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Awesome Voice Acting: The Game" title="Awesome Voice Acting: The Game" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/conan-game-vs-movies-top-5-comparisons/">Age of Conan vs. Schwarzenegger's Conan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 10:00:00 EST. Aside from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08/">vigorous debate this issue raises</a>, it's also incredibly challenging to compare games that use subscription-style pricing with free-to-play/microtransaction games. Who counts as a 'player' if theoretically everyone on earth with a PC *could* be playing your game?<br /><br />Over at Gamasutra CDC Games' Ron Williams attempts to answer just that question. Williams offers that there are actually <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3560/how_to_compare_online_gaming_.php">a large number of data points to track when determining the health of an online title</a>, including the total number of unique visitors (UV) to the game's website each month, the number of new players gained each month, the number of new players that convert to paying players, of the game, and (of course) the total number of paying users for the game. He goes on to offer a few theoretical examples of game data to prove out how, given sufficient data, comparisons between apples and oranges are not that hard to make.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/comparing-subscriptions-and-microtransactions-made-easy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comparing subscriptions and microtransactions made easy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/comparing-subscriptions-and-microtransactions-made-easy/">Comparing subscriptions and microtransactions made easy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 11:00:00 EST. This is definitely a topic that will continue to come up throughout the year of 2008, so get used to seeing it. <a href="http://www.keenandgraev.com/?p=676">Keen and Graev</a> attempt to get the first (and probably the biggest) part of this issue out of the way quick; it's not about which is the better game. They continue on with their topic comparing the two games' differences and similarities. One such similarity is posted above this text; the graphical appearance of the games. The argument here is that both games have a "cartoony" look to them, but that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer Online's</em></a> style is a bit more "grungy". We're not entirely sure if that picture above (not taken by Keen and Graev or us, mind you) illustrates much of a similarity, unless <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> is the only company allowed to use red in their MMOs now.<br /><br />Aside from that, the article lines out the huge difference in PvP between the two games. The biggest difference of course is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/20/warhammer-december-newsletter-features-rvr-keeps-and-sieges/">Realm</a> vs <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/28/warhammer-devs-explain-balancing-rvr/">Realm</a> combat where conquering your enemy has a real in-world cost; your land as well as your pride. Something that is very related to RvR that we happen to be very excited about is Keeps and Siege Weapons, which were originally in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a>. A suggestion that Keen and Graev make that we think is a good idea is to check out the official podcasts made by the dev team. They explain many aspects of WAR in fun, informative and often entertaining ways (we're looking at your <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Barnett_%28video_game_designer%29">Mr Barnett</a>).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/war-vs-wow-keen-and-graev-compare/">WAR vs WoW: Keen and Graev compare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 16:30:00 EST. I think my favorite is the Prophecy, but I can't wait to see how my ships (I'm still a noob-- riding in an <a href="http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Exequror">Exequror</a> and an <a href="http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Iteron_Mark_II">Iteron</a> right now, but working on moving to an <a href="http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Osprey">Osprey</a> and a much bigger hauler) look after the update. Here's <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/crazykinux/sets/72057594133493898/">some more new shots</a>-- <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/news/newsOfEve.asp?newsID=466">Trinity II</a> can't come fast enough.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/eve-online-trinity-ii-ship-comparisons/">EVE Online Trinity II ship comparisons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 18:00:00 EST.
