"Evil is back," the screen proclaims -- and who are we to argue? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a> has released a brand-new 30-second spot for television to promote <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III's</em></a> May 15th release, and it's a tight little package of demons, explosions, fire, and one properly terrified girl.<br />
<br />
Blizzard's been ramping up the hype as its hack-and-slash RPG nears launch. It's released class spotlight videos on the classes of the game, including the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/02/be-vewy-vewy-quiet-were-hunting-demons-a-look-at-diablo-iiis/">Demon Hunter</a>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/11/blizzard-highlights-the-barbarian-in-diablo-iiis-newest-video/">Barbarian</a>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/17/diablo-iii-punches-things-up-with-a-new-monk-video-and-the-end-o/">Monk</a>, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/diablo-iii-cooks-up-a-reveal-for-the-witch-doctor/">Witch Doctor</a>.<br />
<br />
Check out the new TV spot after the break and let us know what you think!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/watch-the-new-diablo-iii-tv-commercial/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch the new Diablo III TV commercial</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/watch-the-new-diablo-iii-tv-commercial/">Watch the new Diablo III TV commercial</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 10:00:00 EST. Have you ever wondered what kind of dirt law enforcement officers would be able to dig up on you if they went to <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> developer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a> for information? Well, wonder no more. An 18-page document has been leaked to the internet thanks to the notorious organization known as AntiSec. The document is two years old, but it outlines what information Blizzard will disclose to law enforcement officers under given stipulations.<br />
	<br />
	And in completely and utterly unrelated news (well, Chuck Norris played a Texas ranger, so I guess there's some kind of connection), the game has revived its celebrity-laden advertisement series with a new commercial featuring none other than the hero of Barrens chat himself, mister Chuck Norris. As expected, the short clip is full of <em>WoW</em>-modified Chuck Norris jokes because apparently that horse hasn't been sufficiently flogged yet. To see the ad for yourself, just click on past the cut.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/21/world-of-warcraft-law-enforcement-guide-leaked-new-commercial/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>World of Warcraft 'law enforcement guide' leaked, new commercial released</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/21/world-of-warcraft-law-enforcement-guide-leaked-new-commercial/">World of Warcraft 'law enforcement guide' leaked, new commercial released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Nov 2011 18:00:00 EST. Do you play <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/RIFT/">RIFT</a></em>? Are you familiar with the Ascend-a-Friend promotion? Of course you are; it's not uncommon for MMOs to offer rewards for recruiting new players after all, and <em>RIFT</em>'s program's main advantage is that it's lucky enough to have a clever rhyming scheme. But perhaps you're not convinced that you should be worried about the ascension of your friends or lack thereof. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Trion-Worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> is taking a big step toward rectifying this with its latest commercial.<br />
<br />
What's in the commercial? Well, we'd rather not say. But you can trust us when we say that it's a short watch that should prove quite convincing -- not only in displaying the rewards you get for recruiting your friends, but in convincing you of the inherent desirability of these rewards. So jump on past the cut to watch the commercial, and you may very well want to watch it even if you're not currently playing <em>RIFT</em>.<br />

"We know conflict," a new ad for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/faxion-online/"><em>Faxion Online</em></a> says, and boy do they ever! The tongue-in-cheek spot shows a fictional (or is it?) day at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/utv-true-games/">UTV True Games</a>, where a frisky pirate and an arrogant ninja happen to walk into the same elevator. What happens next can only be seen, not described, although we would not blame you for weeping out of awe.<br />
<br />
The commercial highlights the spirit of PvP that lies at the core of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/21/massivelys-first-look-at-faxion-online/"><em>Faxion Online</em></a>, an upcoming MMO that pits angelic players vs. their demonic counterparts. The same sense of humor that comes through in this ad <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/faxion-online-delivers-the-ten-commandments-of-pvp/">runs rampant throughout the game</a>, as players war over zones themed after the seven deadly sins.<br />
<br />
Currently, <em>Faxion</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/09/faxion-online-sending-players-to-open-beta-hell-tomorrow/">is in open beta</a>. You can watch the full carnage of this video after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/faxion-online-commercial-gets-to-the-heart-of-conflict/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Faxion Online commercial gets to the heart of conflict</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/20/faxion-online-commercial-gets-to-the-heart-of-conflict/">Faxion Online commercial gets to the heart of conflict</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Apr 2011 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmobility">As our own Beau Hindman knows well</a>, mobile MMOs are on the verge of taking off in a big way, and now they have the commercials to prove it.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.pocketlegends.com/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>, the hit iOS and Android MMO from last year, may be the first mobile online RPG to release a nation-wide commercial. The ad, which features a high-schooler with a not-so-embarrassing secret in his pocket, will air on <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/">G4</a>, <a href="http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/">Cartoon Network</a> and <a href="http://www.comedycentral.com/">Comedy Central</a>, to name just a few venues.<br />
<br />
As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pocket-legends/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a> is often described as "<a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> in your hand," it's kind of ironic that developer <a href="http://www.gameloft.com/">Gameloft</a> is also making pretty much that. Gameloft is renowned for releasing thinly disguised copies of hit games, so it stands to reason that it would take a crack at the reigning champion. The studio just released an online teaser for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/order-and-chaos-online/"><em>Order &amp; Chaos Online</em></a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/gameloft">on its Facebook page</a>, and it's hard not to see the inspiration-slash-knockoff.<br />
<br />
You can check out both commercials after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/ios-mmo-commercials-draw-attention/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iOS MMO commercials draw attention</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/ios-mmo-commercials-draw-attention/">iOS MMO commercials draw attention</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 20:00:00 EST. This 30-second spot for <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a> features a hero opening a rift with a jewel, a dragon roaring, an ogre on the warpath, and adventurers gearing up for the fight. The commercial ends with an invitation to pre-order the game.<br />

PvP in MMO games often comes with a whole slew of ill-defined requirements for balance. As impossible as such a thing is, we often hear the mating calls of noobies everywhere, sounding out their ineptitude with words like "overpowered" or "nerf." Those same types of players can often be found asking questions like, "What is the best class?" as if by some chance, they'll cheat the very system of balance they yearn for when they cry about every defeat they suffer at the hands of class X. In that respect, I can't blame them, either. Oftentimes I've found myself looking for a channel through which to vent my frustration or expressing my nerd-rage by disconnecting altogether. But you won't see me trolling forums, stating that one class has more power than another. I might take part in discussions of parity -- maybe. I can probably even be found taking part in debates of factional equality -- sure, in a theoretical sense, why not?<br />
<br />
But realistically speaking, balance in PvP is just an ideal. It is little more than a philosophical illusion to be debated but never fully realized.<br />
<br />
Follow along after the break as I discuss the sheer absurdity of balance in a PvP game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/the-soapbox-the-impossible-task-of-balancing-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: The impossible task of balancing PvP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/09/the-soapbox-the-impossible-task-of-balancing-pvp/">The Soapbox: The impossible task of balancing PvP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.hero108.tv/">Hero:108</a> is a popular kids show on <a href="http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/">Cartoon Network</a>, and the MMO that has spun off of the series will be making its presence known on <a href="http://www.nick.com/">Nickelodeon</a> pretty soon. <br />
<br />
The new <a href="http://www.hero108online.com/"><em>Hero:108 Online</em></a> commercial will take viewers on a quick, raucous trip through the free-to-play game, through the eyes of a fairly enthusiastic young player. <br />

It looks like <a href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Main"><em>MapleStory</em></a> isn't the only one seeking to draw in some new players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/maplestory-releases-television-promotion/">over the holidays</a>. <a href="http://www.freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> has released two eye-catching television commercials, set to air over the holidays. <br />
<br />
Both spots aim for a thirty second intro to all things <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, with the <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/article/detail.action?articleId=744">first one</a> focusing on holiday events and the <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/article/detail.action?articleId=746">second </a>a more general view. All the bases are covered in these whirlwind tours of the game: cool costumes, houses to decorate, pets, monster fights, jobs, and more. <br />
<br />
There is a heavy emphasis on "free" and "with your friends", which should hold a hefty appeal to the tween and teen set as the holiday vacation from school starts to drag out a little bit next week. There is a brief text disclaimer about halfway through: "premium content and membership available for purchase," which offers a tempting suggestion for kids who haven't decided what to do with that <a href="http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/visa_gift_card.html">Visa gift card</a> they got from Aunt Judy in Oklahoma.<br />
<br />
Both commercials can be viewed <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/">at the official site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/24/free-realms-hops-on-the-tv-commercial-bandwagon/">Free Realms hops on the TV commercial bandwagon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Dec 2009 10:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">If you're pondering some last minute holiday gifts for the younger set, a gift of <a href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/CashShop/CashGuide">Nexon cash</a> may be a welcome pre-emptive strike. <a href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Main"><em>MapleStory</em></a> is hitting the television airwaves this season with a new holiday promotional commercial.</div>
<br />
The commercial -- which is oh-so-conveniently included here -- showcases <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/maplestory"><em>MapleStory</em></a>'s brand new update. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/nexon-plans-new-content-for-maplestory/">Aran update</a> added a fair amount of new content, introducing a new and storyline and namesake warrior class, the Aran. The new content also added a brand new start-up tutorial intended to give players "<em>an easier and immersive entry into the world of </em>MapleStory<em><i>,</i></em><i>" </i> so <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nexon">Nexon</a> seems to be planning on an inrush of new players for their long-running game. The commercial is scheduled to run on Disney XD, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Nickelodeon, and Teen Nick. It began yesterday and will continue showing until January 3rd. <br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SonyOnlineEntertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is continuing their Saturday morning stampede with an all-new, terribly silly commercial. This new video is called "super ego" and offers a look at one particularly stuck-on-himself <a href="http://www.freerealms.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Free Realms</span></a> character. Along with the above particularly large-and-in-charge character, this video also gives us a quick glimpse of the <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Free-Realms/">Free Realms</a></span> trading-card game, which we understand is selling very well. If you're curious to see more, and see just why they call this one "super ego", click on past the break and check this second video out. </div>

Every industry has its Wild West period. Seemingly crazy folks move forward with what turn out to be not-so-crazy ideas. They work together (or in competition) to usher in something totally fresh and new. Some of them stumble. Okay, <em>most</em> of them stumble. But some of them create something so inspiring it births a whole new industry.<br /><br />If you played the early MMOs, you know that it was an exciting frontier. But in recent years the industry has settled into a groove. Yes, it's been a turbulent groove, but it's impossible to deny that in terms of design, most games these days are following a similar formula. This formula -- introduced by <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> (well, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diku">Dikus</a>, actually!) and refined by <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a> </em>-- is used now because it works. It makes money most of the time -- more often than the other formulas or the wild-eyed ideas, anyway.<br /><br />But since the genre has settled on this formula, has it lost something? Has the massive success of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> replaced the exciting frontier with a commercial empire that's short on inspiration and character? Put another way: do you feel like the new games are so focused on commercial appeal that there's no trace of love or passion for the endless as-yet-unimagined possibilities of virtual worlds left over?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/the-daily-grind-is-the-genre-too-commercial/">The Daily Grind: Is the genre too commercial?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. She created a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztjuZTrGcqI">35mm</a> camera, a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9l2-0ELXsA">Polaroid</a> camera, and a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nkeuq-2hVQQ">video camera</a>. Each one had a coordinating <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/machinima/">machinima</a> commercial to go with them.<br /><br />In my favorite video of the three-part series, two women on a camping trip are documenting their experience with video. When one witnesses something, she must go on the run. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, so check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nkeuq-2hVQQ">Video Camping</a>! <br />Nexon seems to have recently launched a new US advertising campaign to promote <a href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/">MapleStory</a>, their free to play MMO. The campaign we've seen so far includes three different commercials (one of which you'll see above) which are, well, a bit odd. I can't say quite what demographic these commercials are aiming at, but perhaps you can tell me -- do they make you want to go out and play MapleStory? Oh, and if one example wasn't enough, you can also check out the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfi_tazQbLo">pig commercial</a> and the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU6gN7IcXAo">snail commercial</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/07/new-maplestory-commercials/">New MapleStory commercials</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Oct 2007 11:03:00 EST.
