So today's Wednesday and yes, I know, my column usually doesn't run on Wednesday. However, <a href="http://government.zdnet.com/?p=8703&amp;tag=col1;post-8714">thanks the recent ruling</a> against the <a href="http://www.fcc.gov">Federal Communications Commission</a> in their net neutrality case, it seems that there's a very relevant topic to talk about as soon as possible.<br />
<br />
Let me open by saying this -- net neutrality isn't another one of those overblown media stories, or something that we should put off on the backburner. Yet, while everyone's talking about net neutrality, few people are really talking about what it is, why you should care, and why you can't trust everything you're hearing about net neutrality. I've heard more than a few mistruths about the subject recently -- including a whole string of mistruths from <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,590506,00.html">everyone's favorite comedy network</a>, Fox News.<br />
<br />
So today, let's set some things straight and talk about net neutrality. This is very serious stuff for the avid MMO gamer, the casual online gamer, or, well, anyone who touches the Internet.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/anti-aliased-special-edition-net-neutrality-the-fcc-com/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anti-Aliased Special Edition: Net neutrality, the FCC, Comcast, and Glenn Beck</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/07/anti-aliased-special-edition-net-neutrality-the-fcc-com/">Anti-Aliased Special Edition: Net neutrality, the FCC, Comcast, and Glenn Beck</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. If anything, business use of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> continues to surge, but it isn't the same kind of usage. Indeed, the sort of usage that is in decline is the sort that can barely be called usage at all.</p>
<p>Much of the sort of business usage that you've heard about through the media are self-promotional usages. Sites intended to boost the image of businesses such as <a href="http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2007/06/taterus_monday__2.html">Comcast</a> (mistargeted) or <a href="http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2007/07/taterus-mixed-3.html">Wired</a> (no target) have largely fallen flat. There are more enterprises using <em>Second Life</em>. They're just not the uses that you normally hear about.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/07/businesses-not-stampeding-from-second-life/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Businesses not stampeding from Second Life</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/07/businesses-not-stampeding-from-second-life/">Businesses not stampeding from Second Life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 07 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. If that usage is exceeded a second time, they face account termination.<br /><br />Of course this opens up the floodgates for criticism from many customers of the largest cable company and the second largest Internet provider in the US. Will this move ultimately mean the break-up of the company's cable internet monopoly? This move makes about as much sense to us as if the government started blocking semi-trucks from driving too much, instead of making more roads and lanes.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/comcast-to-restrict-monthly-broadband-use/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comcast to restrict monthly broadband use</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/comcast-to-restrict-monthly-broadband-use/">Comcast to restrict monthly broadband use</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Aug 2008 17:00:00 EST. And for good reason too; Jennifer has a pretty impressive pedigree. In addition to being the Chair of the Board of Directors for the IGDA, and one of <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=3783&amp;Itemid=2">Next Gen's 100 most influential women in the game industry</a>, Jennifer has experience as the VP and GM of Games for Comcast, and was once the Programming Director for AOL Games, which we hear is <strong>just great</strong>!<br /><br />Now, while some would presume that the position VP of Business Development would be less important than, say, Producer or Lead Designer, at a team like 38 Studios it's actually considerably <strong>more</strong> important. Since 38 Studios is self-publishing their first major MMO title, it will be up to Jennifer to figure out the best way to market and monetize their product. In a world where subscription models are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/subscription/">quickly falling out of vogue</a>, this isn't as easy as you'd think. In any case, we're hoping <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">the near-endless stream</a> of developer hirings and engine purchase announcements is finally come to an end. We demand more game!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/comcast-bigwig-joins-other-bigwigs-at-38-studios/">Comcast bigwig joins other bigwigs at 38 Studios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 19 Mar 2008 19:30:00 EST.
