With great playerbase numbers comes great security responsibility. Wait, no. That's not the movie metaphor we're looking for. How about keep it secret, keep it safe!<br />
<br />
That's more like it, but unfortunately for some <a href="http://lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> fans, the secret (and the safe) parts are being compromised as the free-to-play title sees a rise in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/21/the-road-to-mordor-hacked/">hacked accounts</a> to go along with its expanding user numbers. All hope is not lost, however, as <a href="http://www.codemasters.com/">Codemasters</a> (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO's</em></a> European publisher) has introduced a new <a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/news.php?id=10992">Hacked Account Restart Program</a> designed to assist victims and speed them back onto the road to Mordor.<br />
<br />
The program has a few prerequisites, among them player support eligibility and GM verification of the actual account owner. Claims must also be filed within seven days of the security breach, and reimbursement methods will vary at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/codemasters">Codemasters</a>' discretion. You can read the official announcement on the Codemasters website, and you'll also want to check out Customer Service Manager Sincilbanks' <a href="http://www.maycontaingamers.blogspot.com/">blog entry</a> on the subject.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/26/codemasters-unveils-lord-of-the-rings-online-hacked-account-prog/">Codemasters unveils Lord of the Rings Online hacked account program</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 20:00:00 EST. We have all been waiting for <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a> for quite some time, but perhaps no one quite as much as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Codemasters/">Codemasters</a>. As a matter of fact, the company is so tired of waiting on the game to come out that it's decided to file a civil complaint against <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Netdevil/">Netdevil</a> and its parent company <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gazillion-Entertainment/">Gazillion Entertainment</a> for the delays in publishing the eagerly anticipated sci-fi space shooter. <br />
<br />
While <a href="http://community.codemasters.com/forum/news-announcements-1077/448834-jumpgate-evolution-codemasters.html">the announcement</a> on Codemasters' official <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Jumpgate-Evolution/">Jumpgate Evolution</a></em> site doesn't offer anything beyond the generic "yes, we did this, here's what court we filed it in, no other comment at this time" statement, <a href="http://courthousenews.com/2010/12/02/OnlineGames.pdf">the court document itself makes for interesting (if dry) reading</a>. Essentially, Codemasters charges that Netdevil failed to meet contractual guidelines, which called for the studio to ship the game by February 24th, 2009. During that time, Codemasters paid almost 1.4 million USD to Netdevil to help underwrite the game's development and for "art assets." Codemasters is also seeking compensation due to setting up servers, website, community team, etc. for the European version of <em>Jumpgate Evolution</em>. Ultimately, it boils down to a pretty standard breach of contract that offers Codemasters' share of interest back to Netdevil and Gazillion in return for all monies invested in the project to date. Whether or not this brouhaha will cause any changes to the timetable for <em>Jumpgate Evolution</em> will remain to be seen. We'll keep an eye out as the case progresses. <br />
<br />

With our brethren across the pond <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/29/v-e-me-day-lotro-europe-announces-launch-date-for-free-to-play/">enjoying the free-to-play model</a> of <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, we've been seeing more screenshots coming in from the game of late. If American servers are any indication, there are likely a whole bunch of people returning to (or taking their first steps in) the lands of Middle-earth. What adventures and sights await them? Well, one of the things that lies ahead is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mines-of-Moria/"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a>, a spectacularly spooky spot captured for us today by Fran&ccedil;ois C., who writes in about his experience: <br />
<br />
"<em>I began to play </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a><em> more than two years ago (which does not make me an MMO veteran, strictly speaking, but I'm beginning to feel that way). Anyway, as a true casual player, I'm discovering the game at my own rhythm -- that is to say, very slowly. I am still regularly surprised and pleased by the magnificent scenery. [This] screenshot was taken in the Water-works in the </em>Mines of Moria<em>. It is a bit dark, as expected, but I feel it does a great job conveying the almost inconceivable talent of dwarves at building and engineering and the strange atmosphere in the Moria -- a kind of mix of immensity and claustrophobia</em>."<br />
<br />
Would you like to share some images of your recent adventures? We're always on the hunt for more screenshots of the many different MMOs out there -- but we need your help. Email your screenshots is in to us at <a href="javascript:void(location.href='mailto:'+String.fromCharCode(111,110,101,115,104,111,116,115,64,109,97,115,115,105,118,101,108,121,46,99,111,109)+'?')">oneshots@massively.com</a> along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. While the masses here in the U.S. are currently enjoying a free-to-play version of <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, our MMO gaming brethren across the pond are still wondering when precisely their version will go free-to-play. As such, they organized a rally to peacefully protest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/10/more-lotro-news-brings-delays-sales-and-screenshots/">the</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/codemasters-takes-it-on-the-chin-with-community-therapy/">delays</a>, as we see in today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a> sent in to us by Henric. He writes in to explain it for those of us who weren't there; "<em>EU players marched through Bree [last] Saturday on the Laurelin server to protest against the lack of information from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Codemasters/">Codemasters</a> about the F2P update in Europe. My character Henric is in front. We thought this would be a nice way to let off some steam. The event was RP friendly and over 50 attendees showed up. No server hamsters where harmed during the march</em>."<br />

</a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">While some gamers in the US may not be immediately familiar with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Codemasters/">Codemasters</a>, we know our readers across the pond will immediately recognize them as the company with the rights to publish <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a>, and (the "who-knows-when-it-will-release") MMO <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a> overseas. With that said, last year we heard that the COO at <a href="http://www.codemasters.com/">Codemasters</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TonyWilliams/">Tony Williams</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/codemaster-coo-jumps-ship/">decided to step down</a> from Chief Organizational Officer. Not too long after that, there were rumors that Warner Brothers was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/no-comment-from-codemasters-on-warner-bros-buyout-rumors/">looking into buying the company</a>. Today, it seems that a company from India called Reliance Big Entertainment has pounced, and <a href="http://blog.zapak.com/reliance-adag-acquires-codemasters/">now owns a 50% stake in Codemasters</a>. <br />
<br />
Apparently, Reliance Big Entertainment is very well known in India. It's subsidiary company, Zapak Digital Entertainment, owns the <a href="http://www.zapak.com/">largest online gaming portal</a> in the country as well. This gaming-specific company will be the one in charge of overseeing the investment in UK-based Codemasters. <br />
<br />
As to what this could mean for MMO gamers in the EU, we'll have to wait and see. Perhaps Reliance/Zapak will see fit to close the gap in differences from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a>-controlled version of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>. Or perhaps this new company will finally roll <a href="http://www.ddo-europe.com/">the Codemasters version</a> of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Dungeons-and-Dragons-Online/">Dungeons and Dragons Online</a></em> over to the same free-to-play model that has been such a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/26/one-million-new-adventurers-in-dungeons-and-dragons-online/">huge success for Turbine</a> in the States. No matter what, this is going to be interesting to watch.<br />

<a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com/siege-of-mirkwood/"><em>Siege of Mirkwood</em></a> is nearly here, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/codemasters">Codemasters</a> is offering former European <a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com/"><em><u>Lord of the Rings</u></em></a> players a chance to jump back in and do some catching up before it arrives.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/news.php?id=10189&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=news">Welcome Back Week</a> begins November 23rd and continues through the 30th -- any former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> player can return and enjoy a week of free play, courtesy of Codemasters. They're also offering a bonus: those taking advantage of Welcome Back Week will get a 25% XP boost that week.<br />
<br />
Players interested in returning for the event need only download the game, or patch to the latest version. Codemasters has re-activated the accounts, so you'll find your characters ready and waiting to head back into Middle-Earth and prepare for the arrival of <em>Siege of Mirkwood</em>.<br />
<br />
Codemasters is also using this week to remind players to get in on the <a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com/siege-of-mirkwood/preorder.php"><em>Siege of Mirkwood</em> pre-order deals</a>. The expansion is set to launch in Europe on December 3rd.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/17/lord-of-the-rings-online-offers-welcome-back-week-for-eu-players/">Lord of the Rings Online offers Welcome Back Week for EU players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 23:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil">NetDevil</a> recently <a href="http://us.jumpgateevolution.com/news/article/9097">unleashed a ton of new images from <em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a>, including both concept art and screen shots. And while the new screens are full of amazing space battles, we had to put the spotlight on this concept piece you see above. Are primary reason is because this early captial ship sketch is pretty amazingly designed, and there was no way we couldn't point out how impressive it'll be to see it fully rendered in-game come launch this June.<br /><br />Still, our favorite newest screen is easily <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/1392077/full/">this shot of the spacecraft with the wing-design</a>. Now, is it just us, or is that ship one 90 degree wing-turn away from highly resembling bounty hunter <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slave_I">Boba Fett's Slave I spacecraft</a>? Hmm, seems like the guys and gals over at NetDevil are letting their Star Wars geek show. <span style="font-style: italic;">Groovy!</span><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/">Jumpgate Evolution Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/#2077379"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/june14_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/#2077378"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/june13_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/#2077377"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/june12_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/#2077376"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/june11_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/jumpgate-evolution-gallery/#2077371"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/06/june8_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/28/newest-jumpgate-evolution-screens-would-make-boba-fett-proud/">Newest Jumpgate Evolution screens would make Boba Fett proud</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 28 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil">NetDevil</a> has released a new <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/" style="font-style: italic;">Jumpgate Evolution</a> trailer showing off quite a bit of gameplay footage, including our first look at the much-promised capital ship battles.<br /><br />It'd be an understatement to say that as fans of things like space shooters, Battlestar Galactica and the original Star Wars trilogy, this trailer delivers a lot of excitement. In fact, we hope that Codemasters and NetDevil can figure out how to get stuff like this alongside any upcoming space movies or television series.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/jumpgate-evolution-to-launch-in-june/">June 2009 and beta can't come soon enough</a>, but until then we'll keep updating you with the latest information and news regarding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Jumpgate-Evolution/" style="font-style: italic;">Jumpgate Evolution</a>. We got the chance to catch up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil">NetDevil</a> Producer Hermann Peterscheck on everything <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com" style="font-style: italic;">Jumpgate Evolution</a> this week. The first week of the newest <a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com/competition/index.php">Codemasters European contest</a> has come to a close, and we're already set for more. Last week's winners <a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/news.php?id=7121">have been announced</a> and now it's time for you to enter for your own chance to be the next week's winner.<br /><br />How do you enter? Simply log in to <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> at any time during the week and answer the questions on the <a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com/competition/index.php">competition web page</a>, and from there you'll automatically be entered into a drawing for a chance to win some great prizes including iPod Nanos, NVidia graphics cards, lifetime <em>LotRO</em> subscriptions and more. Even if you're not a current <em>LotRO</em> subscriber, you can play the 14-day trial for eligibility. Keep in mind though that this contest is only open to those players in Europe and South Africa. Separating the two volumes like this allows the company to present news, features and contests that are specific to a certain expansion, which will become more valuable as the list of expansions grows in the coming years. They also promise that the <a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/">community section</a> will benefit from the creativity of their designers soon, and will be brought in line with this new layout.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/lotro-europe-website-gets-a-facelift/">LotRO-Europe website gets a facelift</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 19:00:00 EST. It's a done deal for the European markets. Codemasters Online, the European distributor and operator of <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> and <a href="http://www.partnertrans.com/english.html">Partnertrans</a>, one of the leading interactive entertainment localization agencies are partnering together again. Partnertrans will provide localization, audio recordings, and additional linguistic support on the new expansion and has been providing localization support for <em>Lord of the Rings Online</em> since August 2006. <br /><br /><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lotro-book-14/">one last book</a> before a new volume, <em>Mines of Moria</em>, is opened. Turbine and Codemasters Online are keeping the beta secrets locked away, but in the meantime to tide you over <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/unlock-the-mines-of-moria/">there's fun web-games and teasers</a> to <a href="http://www.unlocktheminesofmoria.com/">unlock the <em>Mines of Moria</em> website</a>. Hands down these interactive web-games are better and much more fun than what Blizzard is doing with their <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/06/24/blizzards-icy-splash-screen-changes-as-diablo-3-and-wotlk-specu/">one-a-day screenshot to fuel the speculative hype-machine</a> on their unannounced game to be unveiled very soon. Titled Episode 3: Spirits Awakening, the also-free expansion will feature 3 new game zones, over 80 new class skills, new ruling <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archlord/">ArchLord</a></em> abilities, new collectible armor sets, and new monsters and zone bosses. <br /><br />For those who haven't heard of this title, one of <em>ArchLord</em>'s unique properties is that any player can rise to the top and become the ArchLord of their particular server, gaining access to a castle, stronger spells, and a dragon. Needless to say, the title is in constant flux, which provides a great incentive to continue to play. The press release doesn't give specifics for the actual expansion release date other than it's due in a few weeks. Once it arrives, we'll take another look at this MMO.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/archlord-to-get-expansion/">ArchLord to get expansion </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST. <span style=""></span><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em><span style="">Jumpgate Evolution</span></em> </a>is a space combat MMO. How players control their ships will be instrumental to the enjoyment of the game. When you think of joysticks and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/is-it-time-to-get-your-joystick-on/"><span style="">flight sticks</span></a> you likely think of highly detailed flight simulators and not massively multiplayer games. But if that's all you think about then you've likely never heard of, let alone played, the greatness that was some of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_X-Wing"><em><span style="">X-Wing</span></em></a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_TIE_Fighter"><em><span style="">TIE Fighter</span></em></a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wing_Commander_%28franchise%29"><em><span style="">Wing Commander</span></em></a> games. <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/"><em><span style="">JGE</span></em></a> plans on bringing back the joystick and - as <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com">Ten Ton Hammer</a>'s Cody "Micajah" Bye calls it - the "strap yourself in" mentality. I couldn't have said it better myself.<br /><br />
<p class="MsoNormal"> Bye sat down with NetDevil's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hermann-peterscheck/"><span style="">Hermann Peterscheck</span></a> and <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/28404"><span style="">asked him about their game's combat controls</span></a>. Aside from the basic keyboard and mouse setup, players with <a href="http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/proflight.htm"><span style="">very elaborate control setups</span></a> will be able to use those as well. But the gaming control goodness doesn't end there. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil/"><span style="">NetDevil</span></a> is also supporting more advanced input devices such as <a href="http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/"><span style="">TrackIR</span></a>, and will continue to evaluate other brand spanking new hardware as it becomes available. <em>JGE</em> will also provide both third and first person modes, giving players the ultimate choice in how they want to play. So if you can't find a setup you like, well... lighten up. You're too finicky.<br /> <br /> But won't people with a tricked out setup have an unfair advantage over those with just a lil ole mouse and keyboard? Find out after the break!</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/jumpgate-evolution-combat-controls/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jumpgate Evolution: Combat controls</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/jumpgate-evolution-combat-controls/">Jumpgate Evolution: Combat controls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 15:30:00 EST. Ten Ton Hammer has posted another of their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a> bi-weekly interviews, this time with Hermann Peterscheck, Producer for <em><em><em>JGE</em>. </em></em>In this installment, <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/25925">Peterscheck answers questions about the game's factions and missions</a>.<br /><br />While reading through the Q&amp;A I was comforted by the fact that Peterscheck continues to push the idea that <em><a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/">JGE</a></em> doesn't have hard and fast rules, and that they are trying to put as much of the game's outcome into the hands of the players (through their choices) as possible. This was something he mentioned during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/jge-dev-qanda-vault-network/">his interview about death and roleplaying</a> as well, so it really does seem like something they intend to follow through with. In this case, while players will have to choose what nation to play (Quantar, Solrain or Octavius) there are no rules about allegiances, thus factions can interact in a myriad of ways with all of them.<em><em><br /></em></em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/jumping-through-the-gate-factions-and-missions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jumping through the Gate: Factions and Missions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/jumping-through-the-gate-factions-and-missions/">Jumping through the Gate: Factions and Missions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 20:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com">MMORPG.com</a> has a new interview with Steve Hartmeyer about <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?SETVIEW=features&amp;GAMEID=297&amp;LOADFEATURE=1763&amp;bhcp=1"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em>'s PvP component</a>. As my "hero" <a href="http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&amp;friendID=23542494">Donnie Baker</a> (a frequent caller to the <a href="http://www.bobandtom.com">Bob &amp; Tom Radio Show</a>) would say, "I can't wait to play this game! I swear to God I can't!"<br /><br />However, PvP in <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/"><em>JGE</em></a> will be... different. And that fact alone has the original game's community all hot and bothered. Understandable. Take a "small" game replete with a die-hard fan base, give it a major overhaul to appeal to a bunch of "n00bs" and you got yourself a recipe for a nice slice of Pissed Off pie. But it's inevitable... that is, if you want to make a game that appeals to more players. And that's what the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NetDevil/">NetDevil</a> want most desperately. A game, any game, is made to make money. Period.<br /><br />In this particular case though, Hartmeyer likens the community discussions on the subject to "religious warfare" with two very polarizing sides. One side says "No place in the game should be safe from PvP", while the other demands "Don't push your RP on me." Yikes! Talk about a thin line. But at some point the community can only have so much input and the developers have to go down the path they feel will garner the most players. <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?SETVIEW=features&amp;GAMEID=297&amp;LOADFEATURE=1763&amp;bhcp=1">Hartmeyer's journal entry</a> is fascinating. and as you read it you can feel the sincerity emanating from the screen. It it is an absolute must read for anyone interested in this particular upcoming sci-fi MMO.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/15/jge-pvp-and-you/">JGE, PvP and you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. By now you know I'm a sci-fi geek, reporting on everything even remotely interesting (and some of our readers would say, not even that on occasion) about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/stargate-worlds/"><em>Stargate Worlds</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/earthrise-to-do-what-reality-doesnt/"><em>Earthrise</em></a>, etc. I also have a fondness for the guys and gals at <a href="http://www.netdevil.com/">NetDevil</a>, makers of the now defunct and often criticized (yet loved by it's core of loyal fans, myself included) <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/games/auto-assault/pc/game-reviews/item/3042/1137/"><em>Auto Assault</em></a>.<br /><br />
<p>In a new dev diary posted on <a href="http://www.mmo-gamer.com">MMO Gamer</a>, NetDevil programmer <a href="http://www.mmo-gamer.com/?p=339">Steve Hartmeyer talks about the inspiration behind the evolution of <em>Jumpgate</em></a>. We've reported before that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/is-it-time-to-get-your-joystick-on/">space combat in JGE will be reminiscent of <em>X-Wing vs. TIE fighter</em></a>, but until now I didn't know what the impetus behind that comparison was. Apparently Scott Brown (founder of NetDevil) is a lot like me (and many others I'm sure). In 1977 both of us saw <a href="http://www.starwars.com/"><em>Star Wars</em></a> - and it changed our lives indescribably. <em>JGE</em> stems from his passion for that masterpiece, but it's not the only ingredient. Hartmeyer goes on to include <em><a href="http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/">Battlestar Galactica</a></em> as another key inspiration. Apparently the original <em>Jumpgate</em> development team was inspired by other shows I watched (and obsessed over), such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space:_Above_and_Beyond"><em>Space: Above and Beyond</em></a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_5"><em>Babylon 5</em></a>.<br /></p>
<p>They had me at <em>Star Wars</em>. With the addition of these other sci-fi franchises which I loved so much, well... The rest of the entry is chock full of inspirational goodness. If you've been sitting on the fence about this game, it might be the very thing that makes you finally say: Hells ya! </p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/jumpgates-evolution-ary-inspiration/">Jumpgate's evolution(ary) inspiration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 19:30:00 EST. <div align="left">The <a href="http://vault.ign.com">Vault Network</a> recently posted a new <a href="http://vault.ign.com/View.php?view=Articles.Detail&amp;id=23">Q &amp; A session with Hermann Peterscheck</a>, Producer of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a>. Some interesting tidbits were revealed that I haven't come across before. When asked about role-playing potential, Peterscheck states that they want a game where the players define as much of it as possible, therefore it is very RP friendly. Case in point: there are three playable nations in <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/"><em>JGE</em></a>. While most MMOs don't allow interaction with other groups, that's not the case with <em>JGE</em>. Instead of forcing players into roles by creating three distinct areas, they feel that RP occurs more spontaneously when you give the players a reason to play the role as they see fit.<br /><br /></div>
</div>
<p>When asked about how they were planning to handle death penalties, Peterscheck basically sidestepped the issue. He says it will be different from <a href="http://www.jossh.com/join_today/index.html"><em>JG:C</em></a>, which has players lose items upon death. And they seem to be staying away from a <em>death penalty where you drop all your stuff and lose half a level of experience</em>, but a straightforward "this is how we're dealing with death" answer wasn't given.</p>
There are a few more questions <a style="" title="VN QNA" target="_blank" href="http://vault.ign.com/View.php?view=Articles.Detail&amp;id=23">worth checking out</a>, such as the prospects of crews, the classless system and home areas.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/jge-dev-qanda-vault-network/">JGE devs talk about death and roleplaying</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 17:00:00 EST. The first edition of this slick newsletter just hit the virtual newsstands and provides readers with a nifty summary of <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/"><em>JGE</em></a> community activity, news and screen shots.<br /><br />The premiere volume features an entry from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/new-jumpgate-evolution-developer-log-from-scott-brown/">Scott "Scorch" Brown's diary</a> -- which I commented on a few days ago, and includes a very cool feature called "Jumpgate Underground" written by Awen. This mysterious lore piece is written as if it were in-game and will provide insider news about the game. If your entry is chosen the name will stick for the game's entire life cycle. Bragging rights are beyond description, and worth the effort of entry alone. But winners will also receive an autographed piece of concept art of the fighter.<br /><br />Bounce over to the JR website and check out the <a href="http://joystickrequired.com/forums/f103/jumpgate-evolutions-octavius-light-fighter-named-joystick-required-3575.html">official contest thread</a> for all the details. You'll have to join the community (and you should anyway), but that's a small price to pay. Entries must follow an Avian theme (i.e., things that fly - like Hawk, Hummingbird, or Northern Spotted Wood Owl). The contest started on February 1, and will run at least two weeks. Scott Brown is one of the founders of <a href="http://www.netdevil.com/">NetDevil</a>, makers of <a href="http://www.jossh.com/terminal_civilian.html"><em>Jumpgate Classic</em></a>, <em>Auto Assault</em> and the upcoming <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a>. In a new developer log posted on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em>JGE</em></a> site Scott waxes philosophical on the burning question: <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/community.php?id=654">Why Jumpgate Evolution</a>?<br /> <br />OK, maybe it's not a "burning" question to everyone, but it is to me since I so enjoyed <em>Auto Assault</em> and actually raised a pint in an honorary toast <a href="http://www.netdevil.com/news/statements/autoassault.php">when it came to a crashing halt last year</a>. <br /><br />In Scott's reflections on the past he says that even though <em>AA</em> didn't perform to everyone's expectations they still learned a lot from the experience. They took that knowledge and applied it to evolving the <em>Jumpgate</em> franchise into what is looking to be a spectacular space frag-fest. Additionally, Scott talks a little about the development process of <em>JGE</em> and reveals some insightful tidbits about how NetDevil evolved that will surely warm the hearts of even the most k001 "jaded" gamers (and there are many of those, something I've never quite understood - they're games, but that's a topic for another time). Heartfelt honestly in this industry is few and far between. <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/community.php?id=654">Give it a read</a> and tell me you aren't more stoked about JGE!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/new-jumpgate-evolution-developer-log-from-scott-brown/">New Jumpgate Evolution developer log from Scott Brown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 20:00:00 EST. Last week it was officially announced that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/codemasters-to-publish-jumpgate-evolution/">Codemasters was going to publish <em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a>, <a href="http://www.netdevil.com/">NetDevil</a>'s upcoming sci-fi MMO. MMORPG has the <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?GAMEID=297&amp;SETVIEW=features&amp;LOADFEATURE=1744&amp;bhcp=1">first detailed interview with the newly minted publisher</a> up on their website.<br /><br />Among the more intriguing nuggets pertains to the buzz-words that <a href="http://www.codemasters.com/">Codemasters</a> uses to describe the game. Yes, they are the PR goombas specifically using them in order to sell the game, but to be honest ... it's working with me.<br /><br />"Twitch-based combat" where players can literally jump into the cockpit and take part in an action packed space dogfight ... using a joystick (if they feel like it)! Sounds like <em>X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter</em>. Something that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/is-it-time-to-get-your-joystick-on/">I've commented on before</a>. <br /><br />"Think of Jumpgate as the Battlestar Galactica of sci-fi MMOs." OK! The analogy makes sense too, since both are properties taken from the past (in this case the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumpgate:_The_Reconstruction_Initiative">original <em>Jumpgate</em></a> from back in 2001) and have been re-imagined into something far grander. At least we hope so. And based on the screen shots and game video ... it seems to be heading in that direction rather than going down the toidy.<br /><br />Codemasters plans on releasing the game in the winter of 2008 in both North America and Europe, but they won't commit to a firm date. Read the <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?GAMEID=297&amp;SETVIEW=features&amp;LOADFEATURE=1744&amp;bhcp=1">whole interview</a> for all the details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/mmorpg-chats-up-codemasters/">MMORPG chats up Codemasters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 17:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/codemasters-announce-connect-2008-mmorpg-event-for-europeans/">announced earlier this month</a>, Codemasters Online will be hosting a 2-day community event in England on March 14 - 15 at <a href="http://www.omega-sektor.com/">Omega Sektor</a>, the world's largest indoor gaming center. With the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/codemasters-to-publish-jumpgate-evolution/">recent announcement</a> that Codemasters will be publishing <a href="http://www.netdevil.com/">Netdevil</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/jumpgate-evolution/"><em>Jumpgate Evolution</em></a>, the event will also be the very first time gamers will get the opportunity to play <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/"><em>JGE</em></a>. <br /> <br />Connect 2008 will have over 400 machines loaded with the sci-fi epic. Aside from playing the game, attendees will receive <span>an exclusive BETA key as part of the gift pack distributed at the show. </span><span>Additionally, developers from NetDevil will be on hand to talk about the game and answer questions. You'll also be able to play other Codemasters games including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>LoTR Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online/"><em>D&amp;D Online</em></a>, <em>RF Online</em> and <em>Archlord</em>. <br /><br />ARGH! I really, really wish I could go to this. Sadly, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/">Massively</a> ain't gonna front the bill for me to hop the pond and grab some fish and chips (and some great English brew)... so if any of our devoted readers make it we'd love to see some of your photos and hear about your experience! Check out the official website for the whole scoop on <a href="http://www.codemasters.com/connect/index.php">Connect 2008</a>.</span>

Codemasters Online are the European distributors of quite a number of MMOs, including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online/"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rf-online/"><em>RF Online</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archlord/"><em>ArchLord</em></a>. These games and more will feature at a brand new community event hosted by Codemasters in the UK called "Connect 2008", <a href="http://www.lotro-europe.com/news.php?id=5333&amp;articletype=News">as revealed</a> on <em>LotRO</em>'s European site today.<br /><br />The event will span 2 days, from the 14th to the 15th of March this year, and there will be 400 networked PCs to play Codemasters' current and future games, including some that they say are as-of-yet unannounced. There will of course be some gaming swag for attendees, and the chance to talk with some of the people behind the games -- not to mention meeting other people from your game's community.<br /><br />You will be required to purchase a ticket for the event (although they aren't on sale yet) and there is apparently going to be a fairly limited supply. If a trip to England sounds like your cup of tea, then you'll want to keep checking the <a href="http://www.codemasters.com/connect/">official Connect 2008 website</a> for updated ticketing info -- or simply to watch the giant countdown clock -- and you can also sign up to a newsletter to stay on top of the latest word. Or, if you want to get <em>really</em> involved, they have even set up <a href="http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&amp;groupID=106956016&amp;Mytoken=F1BD406A-6AD1-45B8-A8D81627EB37FD2770421044">Myspace</a> and <a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;id=7013723158">Facebook</a> profiles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/codemasters-announce-connect-2008-mmorpg-event-for-europeans/">Codemasters announce "Connect 2008", MMORPG event for Europeans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Jan 2008 21:00:00 EST. It seems that ever since the game has gone <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/24/rf-online-is-now-free/">free to play</a>, the popularity of the game has overpopulated the other two worlds, Novus and Lumen. Lumen was also opened within the last 30 days, so they are trying to respond to the increased popularity of the game as quickly as possible.<br /><br />The game is gorgeous and fun, particularly for a free game. I have yet to play very long, however, because their European downtimes have unfortunately coincided with my U.S. available playtimes.<br /><br />If you are interested in trying RF Online, you can sign up for and download your free copy <a href="http://www.rf-onlinegame.com/freetoplay.php">here</a>. Codemasters highly recommends starting new characters on Solus in order to avoid any population related issues.<br /><br />Now, if I can just figure out how to turn off that song in the launcher...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/rf-online-opens-new-world/">RF Online opens new world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Nov 2007 16:30:00 EST.
