	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/xlgames-shows-off-new-archeage-cbt4-teaser/"><img alt="ArcheAge - bird's eye view of sailing ships" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/12/aacbt4ships.jpg" /></a></div>
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XLGAMES</a> has released a new teaser trailer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archeage"><em>ArcheAge</em></a>, presumably to mock those of us who haven't yet managed to snag an invite to the sandpark title's fourth Korean closed beta test. The clip shows a small invasion force traveling by ship towards one of the game's continents and, as usual, the visuals on display are a cut above (way above) the MMORPG norm.<br />
<br />
Strangely, there's no combat on display during the trailer's two-minute running time, but there's plenty of atmosphere, ambiance, and anticipation just in case you weren't already beside yourself with excitement. Check out the full clip after the break and let us know what you think.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/xlgames-shows-off-new-archeage-cbt4-teaser/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>XLGAMES shows off new ArcheAge CBT4 teaser</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/xlgames-shows-off-new-archeage-cbt4-teaser/">XLGAMES shows off new ArcheAge CBT4 teaser</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 11:00:00 EST. The somewhat European inspired fantasy MMO <a href="http://spellborn.acclaim.com/"><em>The Chronicles of Spellborn</em></a> is shutting down its Japanese service, <a href="http://phpbb.acclaim.com/spellborn/viewtopic.php?t=6203&amp;sid=535a1624411d485c4a01afdaa567c2d1">causing a stir of worry and discussion</a> about the title's future in other territories within the community at large. To make matters worse, the one person who could've cleared up any confusion, TheHistorian, is no longer with publisher Acclaim as community manager for the game. Given that he was the sole link between the community and developers, it's no wonder people are feeling a bit unsettled by the whole affair.<br />
<br />
While the closure of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Chronicles-of-Spellborn/"><em>The Chronicles of Spellborn</em></a> Japan isn't a good thing, it doesn't necessarily spell out a dark future for the title. A business deal could've gone sour, or perhaps the audience in Japan just wasn't strong enough to maintain the title. Just <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/the-chronicles-of-spellborn-to-be-re-developed-as-free-to-play/">in cast something does happen, however,</a> we'll be keeping an eye out for any further development.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/spellborn-dropping-out-of-the-japanese-market/">Spellborn dropping out of the Japanese market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Mar 2010 11:00:00 EST. It's a depressing news day for me today. As <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/soe-is-jacking-out-of-the-matrix-online/">we've reported earlier</a>, Sony Online Entertainment has finally made the decision to pull the plug on <a href="http://www.thematrixonline.com"><em>The Matrix Online</em></a>, a decision that makes absolutely perfect sense given the dire straights the game has been in for the past few years.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-matrix-online"><em>MxO</em></a> was always "the little game that could" in regards to the community outlook. Even with horribly broken systems, a grind worthy of an Asian MMO, and periods where I literally sat around doing nothing, there was some odd charm about the game. Perhaps it was the setting, or maybe it was the really cool combat system (yes, it too was broken, but those animations were sweet), but I think it was the storyline.<br /><br />Let's have a look back the history of <em>Matrix Online</em> and some of the stories no one ever heard about.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/anti-aliased-so-long-and-thanks-for-all-the-woah/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anti-Aliased: So long, and thanks for all the woah</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/anti-aliased-so-long-and-thanks-for-all-the-woah/">Anti-Aliased: So long, and thanks for all the woah</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 May 2009 18:00:00 EST. How could a post-apocalyptic zombie shoot 'em up have gone so very wrong? Though your servers are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/hellgate-london-to-shut-down-in-february/">shutting down at the end of January</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/hanbitsoft-admits-their-hellgate-rights-dont-extend-to-us-eu/">never again to return to US or European shores</a>, we ran into this collector's edition box just yesterday, placed at an appealing eye-level on a Circuit City shelf, just begging the innocent passerby to take it home (or perhaps, considering the game's rocky history, simply to give it a good hug). And it's not the only MMO that's leaving us in early 2009: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/tabula-rasa-to-shut-down-in-february-2009/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em> is closing at the end of February</a>. (Though unlike <em>Hellgate</em>, which isn't even accepting new subscriptions at this point, <em>TR</em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/tabula-rasa-goes-free-to-play-one-month-early/">free to play for everyone</a> until the servers shut down.) These are hardly the only games to have met an unfortunate end: remember <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_and_Beyond" style="font-style: italic;">Earth and Beyond</a>? <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Assault" style="font-style: italic;">Auto Assault</a>? Oh, MMOs, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/22/the-digital-continuum-why-must-mmos-die/">why must you go away</a> and leave us oh so alone? (Not that we here at Massively are at all bitter about MMO closures. These games were only our best friends once upon a time.) So this morning, in honor of that lonely Hellgate box, which MMOs going or gone do you miss?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/29/the-daily-grind-the-ones-that-got-away/">The Daily Grind: The ones that got away</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. It could be before the MMOG ever launched essentially erasing it and making it unknown or sometime after it launched. Any MMOG is fair game. What about the reasons for your conclusion. Maybe you played it for hundreds of days on end and that caused a rift in your awesome social life. Perhaps it's the fact that your buddies left you behind and you want to enact revenge to get your old group back. There has to be one MMOG that you don't like, find annoying, whatever the reason. Or maybe you wouldn't pull the plug on any MMOG. That's okay too. <br /></div>
<br />Let's know, and be sure to explain your reasoning for doing so other than "I hate that game" or "I don't care." Example: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/richard-bartle-expands-on-earlier-remarks-stated-in-massively-in/">Richard Bartle would sacrifice</a> <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> because at one time or still believes the demise would benefit independent MMORPG developers. Please keep the nerd rage at a minimum when explaining why you chose that particular MMOG.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/the-daily-grind-what-mmog-would-you-kill-off/">The Daily Grind: What MMOG would you kill off?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST. It wasn't long ago that Max Schaefer, a Flagship Studios cofounder and operations chief, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/flagship-holds-forth-on-lessons-learned/">admitted to mistakes that the company encountered</a> with <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com/"><em>Hellgate: London</em>.</a> Now, in a strange twist of irony the players are learning firsthand the lessons of Flagship's failures. The <a href="http://www.mythos.com/"><em>Mythos</em></a> beta ended as it was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/mythos-beta-is-shutting-down-tonight/">placed on hiatus last night</a>, possibly being the last time players will grace the world of Uld. Not long after that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/mythos-hellgate-forums-scheduled-to-die-tonight/"><em>Mythos</em> beta forums went dark</a> but before they did Max Schaefer left a wonderful message to the community. <br /><br /><em>"They say it's not so much the destination as it is the journey that's important. We're really hoping that's the case around here these days. I can't really believe I'm writing a post like this, but here we are faced with the unpleasant task of taking a hiatus from this crazy project. Unlike most games, Mythos has been running with our testing community for almost its whole life. I really feel like we've all done this together. And despite this bump in the road, I think we've succeeded wildly. This is undoubtedly the best game community I've ever seen. This is the best game development team in the world, in both Seattle and San Francisco. The things we've learned here, and with you all, will be with us forever.<br /><br /></em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/max-schaefer-thanks-mythos-community/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Max Schaefer thanks Mythos community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/max-schaefer-thanks-mythos-community/">Max Schaefer thanks Mythos community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Jul 2008 21:00:00 EST. <div align="left">It's official: <a href="http://www.flagshipstudios.com/">Flagship Studios</a>' <a href="http://www.mythos.com/"><em>Mythos</em></a> beta <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mythos">has ceased to be.</a> It's expired and gone to meet its maker. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. It is, in fact, an ex-MMO. <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com"><em>Hellgate London</em></a> subscriptions have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/hellgate-london-subscriptions-suspended/">halted</a>, and it might soon join <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mythos"><em>Mythos</em></a> in the great void. There are hopes that they'll be back under a different banner -- or that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate</em></a> might not close at all -- but if only the worst happens, these two games will certainly be missed by many.<br /><br />They are not the first ones we've lost, though. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underlight"><em>Underlight</em></a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_And_Beyond"><em>Earth &amp; Beyond</em></a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asheron%27s_Call_2"><em>Asheron's Call 2</em></a> have all gone the way of the 8-track tape. <a href="http://www.ryzom.com"><em>Saga of Ryzom</em></a> went under as well, though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/saga-of-ryzom-forums-quietly-come-back-online/">it looks like it might make a comeback.</a> Think about those games for a moment, or any others you've lost; which lost MMOs do you want back the most? Do you want them back because you played them and now you miss them, or because you never got to play them at all?<br /><br />Consider this the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/flagship-studios">Flagship Studios</a> memorial <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-daily-grind">Daily Grind!</a><br /></div>

The woes continue at Flagship Studios. It was just announced that the <em>Mythos</em> beta will shutdown tonight. The official time slotted for its cease of operations is at July 18th, 2008 at 11:59 CST. Community manager Tiggs left the message on<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/mythos-hellgate-forums-scheduled-to-die-tonight/"> the forums which are also due to close</a> at the same time. <br /><br /><em>"We, the ancient elders of Uld are issuing this warning to all citizens and travelers. Hurry! The great darkness that once plagued Uld is returning. Everyone is ordered to close down their shops and prepare. We predict the when night is at its peak the darkness will arrive. The ancient elders of Uld will be leaving immediately in order to preserve the lore of this wonderful world. Citizens please prepare thyself and know that the elders will be back from their travels some day."</em><br /><br />Flagship Studios claims that the <em>Mythos</em> beta is going on a hiatus. That's pretty vague term associated with the closure of a beta that stems from a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/hanbitsoft-barbs-flagship-studios/">financial and legal crisis</a> at a development studio. It does signal a possible return later, and we do hope <em>Mythos</em> continues development in the near feature and sees a well-deserved release. Lead developer on <em>Mythos</em>, Travis Baldree<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/lead-dev-travis-baldree-updates-mythos-community-and-uncertainty/"> recently posted on the forums</a> expressing his thanks and gratitude along with his uncertainty for how long the <em>Mythos</em> beta would remain operational. Now we know, and so soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/mythos-beta-is-shutting-down-tonight/">Mythos beta is shutting down tonight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 18:15:00 EST. Several days ago, <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/"><em>WoW</em></a> informants tipped sister site WoW Insider the news that the <em>Wrath of the Lich King</em> alpha was offline. Yesterday morning the rumorang came full circle as <em>World of Warcraft</em>, Community Manager Eyonix confirmed the fears alpha players had suspected all along. The official notice stated the <em>WotlK </em>alpha had closed down and a message of thanks was left with a reassurance that all alpha testers would be able to participate in the beta which would start soon. <a href="http://deathknight.info/forum/index.php?topic=1497.0">The message was leaked on Deathknight.info.</a><br /></div>
<br />No actual date was given on when the <em>WotlK</em> beta will start, but active <em>WoW</em> players who were not in the alpha or already guaranteed a beta slot can take a gamble <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/wrath-of-the-lich-king-us-beta-opt-in-goes-live/">with the optional-in beta signup that went live recently</a>. It shouldn't be long now. <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/07/15/wotlk-friends-and-family-alpha-now-over-say-sources/">WoW Insider is also reporting</a> on some scuttlebutt from a purported family member of a developer, and their belief that Blizzard is rushing development to meet an arbitrary deadline. With the first phase of beta starting soon there is still plenty of time left for the <em>WoW</em> developers to polish out the 76-80 content. If <em>WotlK</em> is not ready Blizzard will more than likely push the release back as they did with <em>TBC</em>. <br /><br />[<a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/07/15/wotlk-friends-and-family-alpha-now-over-say-sources/">Via WoW Insider</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/wow-wrath-of-the-lich-king-friends-and-family-alpha-concludes/">Wrath of the Lich King friends &amp; family alpha concludes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 16:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.fomportal.com/">It has been declared</a> that <a href="http://www.fomportal.com/"><em>Face of Mankind: Rebirth</em></a> is indefinitely canceled, the statement citing a lack of financial resources as the primary cause. <em>Face of Mankind</em> had its trials and tribulations, it launched back in 2006 and was plagued with bugs and many players found the gameplay difficult. It still managed to gather a small supportive playerbase and remained in operation until the official portal was hit by a series of denial of service attacks all throughout May, 2007. <br /><br />The attacks played a factor in the game's eventual closure in November, 2007, the perpetrators were later identified and arrested by the Scotland Yard computer crime unit. Duplex Systems, an already small development team, announced an attempt to continue support, add a bevy of new game mechanics, and relaunch the game as <em>Face of Mankind: Rebirth</em> if a publisher could be found.<br /><br />While it's sad to witness the death of one MMOG that wanted to live again, not all is lost from <em>Face of Mankind</em>. Duplex Systems has announced plans on a new MMOG entitled <em><a href="http://www.nanoverse-online.com/">NanoVerse Online</a></em>. </div>
