Did you know that May 4th is Star Wars Day? Yeah, neither did I, which apparently means my failure as a Star Wars fan is complete.

Oh, wait, I get it. May the fourth be with you!

Anyway, Sony Online Entertainment is offering free booster points as well as a special code to unlock a rare double-bladed lightsaber, all for logging in to Clone Wars Adventures. And the game has a new introductory offer that includes first-month access to premium Jedi membership levels for only $1.99. More info is yours for the reading at the official CWA site.

Clone Wars Adventures hits 10 million player milestone

The Force is strong with Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures -- about 10 million strong, in fact. In a press release today, Sony Online Entertainment announced that its free-to-play, family-friendly Star Wars title has reached 10 million registered players. The studio also includes a list of interesting statistics, such as the number of stages of gameplay available to players (584) and the number of trophies available to earn (96), but really, only one statistic matters.

That statistic is this: Players of Clone Wars Adventures' Stunt Gungan minigame have collectively launched Jar Jar Binks over 4.5 billion meters. For reference, that means players have effectively bounced Jar Jar to the moon and back seven times. Let's have a round of applause for these unsung heroes, shall we?

But hey, CWA players: Next time, aim for the sun.

With all of the buzz centered around "grown-up" MMO titles like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2, it's easy for the kid-friendly games to get lost in the shuffle. There may not be as many kid titles on the horizon, but for the games that are currently out there, there's been an amazing amount of activity going on in these virtual worlds.

I decided to take a peek at some of my (and the kids') favorites, along with a few games that we've done first impressions on, to see what they've been up to lately. Since there are too many great kid-friendly MMOs out there to fit into one column, this will be the first of what will probably be many follow-up entries covering other games, so if you don't see your favorite family-friendly game here, fear not!

Clone Wars Adventures launches open-world combat expansion

Are you just unable to get enough of games set in a galaxy far, far away? Clone Wars Adventures has your back in this, as the game is rolling out a large update that brings in a much-desired aspect: open-world combat. Players will be able to engage in battle on the planet Umbara, home of the Shadow People and site of a battle between the forces of the Republic and the Separatists.

The list of features on the new world is quite extensive, including a new mission instance for multiple players to experience and special abilities beyond weapons available only to Jedi members. Players can also assemble a collection of special equipment, slip the surly bonds of gravity with the newfound ability to jump, and ride around on their very own AT-RT mounts from the marketplace. It should be an interesting addition for fans of Clone Wars Adventures -- after all, who doesn't like the option to blast droids?

Clone Wars Adventures gets new starter zone, mini-game, and more

Things have been busy over at Sony Online Entertainment's Clone Wars Adventures, it would seem. The game just received a sizeable update, which brings a new mini-game, a new starting area, and a number of new outfits and pets to the game.

The new mini-game comes in the form of Aquatic Assault, a top-down shoot-'em-up that puts players in the tentacles of the Nautolan Jedi Kit Fisto as he attempts to fend off Separatist and Quarren forces from his ship. New players are also in for a treat, as all new characters will begin in the just-added Ryloth Battle zone, which is an outdoor environment where a battle between Republic troops and renegade battle droids rages on. For those who would prefer to stay indoors, though, SOE has added a new Featured Homes browser, which lets players browse through player houses that have been deemed particularly snazzy.

A number of new items are available as well, such as Commander Wolffe's armor, Jawa and momong pets, holoprojector costumes, and housing decoration items. If you're interested in checking out all these new additions, just head on over to the game's official site.

Clone Wars Adventures' Update goes live -- the Producers discuss collaborative project

At Fan Faire last week, we brought news of the upcoming story-based update to Clone Wars Adventures, which will bridge the gap between Season Three and Season Four. That update goes live today, and we talked a bit more about the process at a round-table with Senior Producer Todd Carson, Game Designer Justin Dazet, and Dave Filoni, Supervising Producer for the TV show.

Clone Wars Adventures uses the force to hit one million mark

The force is strong with Clone Wars Adventures! This colorful little virtual world is barely a week out of launch, and Sony Online Entertainment has announced it has managed to pass one million accounts registered in that time. When one considers that SOE's other kid-friendly property, Free Realms, took 18 days to hit the same number of accounts, this is impressive news indeed. To celebrate hitting this first million, all Clone Wars Adventures denizens will be given a special limited-edition in-game Golden Mouse Droid to enjoy. Additionally, the company is throwing a huge party today at 3 p.m. PDT (6 p.m. EDT), which will kick off a week of in-game events.

We'd like to send our congrats out to the entire SOE team on its success with CWA. Hopefully we'll see even more added to this fun little world in the months to come as the television series progresses and the storyline in-game changes to follow it.

Hasbro working on The Old Republic action figures for 2012

If you're anything like the other billion Star Wars fans in the world, then you most likely harbor a deep-rooted affection for the action figures (NOT dolls!) that became synonymous with the film experience. Ever since Kenner started the toy line in 1977 (and Hasbro after that), kids and grownups alike have decorated their bedrooms, offices and private sanctuaries with hard plastic likenesses of Luke, Leia and Chewie.

Star Wars action figures have not been confined to just the movies; sets such as Evolutions, Clone Wars, and Shadows of the Empire have all received their own lines. To have action figures made meant that you had "arrived" in Star Wars fame, which is why The Old Republic fans should rejoice to know that their as-of-yet unreleased MMO will become immortalized in Hasbro's lineup.

TTH reports that Hasbro's Derryl DePriest confirmed TOR action figures are in the works for the 2012 roster. DePriest said on ForceCast.net, "We're going to have to work in some of those great characters." Just which TOR characters will be made into dolls, er, ACTION FIGURES is anyone's guess at the moment, but there are already several possibilities in the characters we know from the cinematic trailers and the Holonet.

Clone Wars Adventures launches with new trailer

Clone Wars Adventures has been in open beta for a little while now, and the big day has arrived. Sony Online Entertainment launched the free-to-play game today in tandem with an exciting new trailer entitled "War Reels."

CWA players will fight alongside characters they know from the TV series, including Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Ahsoka. Sony Online Entertainment is pleased with the way development has gone until now: "We are incredibly proud of Clone Wars Adventures. LucasArts and Lucasfilm have been great partners throughout this entire project, so the game is seamlessly integrated with the TV series," says SOE president John Smedley.

Free for All: Three games to keep an eye on

There is so much to be excited about in the MMORPG world that I am always perplexed when someone claims lack of innovation in the market. I tend to think that this comes from an inability to play more than one game, or to support more than one idea in gaming, rather than from the actual state of the market. The fact is that there is so much happening in the world of gaming, and specifically free-to-play gaming, a player should feel almost overwhelmed.

I wanted to point out three games now in development (or very close to release) that I believe will do very well. Think of this as a list of predictions -- in fact I am going to have some fun with it and predict just how well these games will do. I have always enjoyed testing my gut. Concerning these three games, my gut is very, very excited. So, let's get right to the list.

Like a kowakian monkey-lizard in heat, Larry Everett is back again with another edition of your guide to EA-BioWare's yet-to-be-released game Star Wars: The Old Republic. Welcome to the Hyperspace Beacon.

Every once in awhile, the Star Wars universe produces the strangest plot devices or game items. Some of these concoctions should never see the light of day, but unfortunately, they do. I like to highlight these malformed ideas in a segment of the Hyperspace Beacon called "We hope this never makes it into SWTOR, but, knowing our luck, it probably will" or WHTNMIISWTORBKOLIPW, for short.

This week's column revolves around the prequels. Although there are many, many, many things wrong with the prequels, I would like to take a look at some of the highlights. To help those who may not know what is being discussed, I will give you a brief explanation of what each item is, then explain what is wrong with it, and follow that with a humorous explanation of how BioWare will ruin SWTOR by implementing it in our beloved game. Let's see what creative blunders we have in store this week.

Clone Wars Adventures open beta begins

Sony Online Entertainment's Clone Wars Adventures MMO snuck up on us last night, steathily going into open beta and allowing interested parties to Force-jump in, kick the tires (sorry, repulsor-lifts), and light the fires. Clicking the hard-to-miss "beta" tab on the official website will get you started, and from there it's a quick ride through account and character creation to the game proper.

The title will officially launch on September 15th, two days prior to the Season Three premiere of the television series on which it's based. The game is free-to-play, features microtransactions, and can be downloaded from the official website. Alternatively, you can check out a special retail box that goes on sale October 5th and includes a 90-day membership, Station Cash, and a Togruta player character.

SOE announces launch date and more for Clone Wars Adventures

Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming Clone Wars Adventures has garnered a fair amount of interest among both the younger target audience and older fans as well. As with any upcoming game, the question of a launch date is always at the top of everyone's need-to-know list.

SOE answered that question today, giving us plenty of extra information in the process. Clone Wars Adventures will launch on September 15th, the same day as the premiere of the third season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, making for an exciting day for fans.

Launch is still a little over a month away, but there is already the promise of more to come. We've known for a while that the game will be free-to-play with microtransactions, but SOE has a special retail box planned for release on October 5th. The Clone Wars Adventures Galactic Passport will be sold in stores throughout North America, and will contain a 90-day membership, 500 Station Cash, the ability to unlock the Togruta playable character, a Yoda monitor topper, and more.

This announcement comes with a closer look at minigames, one of the game's main features. Check out the gallery below for new screenshots (including a peek at housing), and a brand new "Inside the Game" video after the jump.

As some of you may be aware, I love the whole idea of roleplaying and storytelling in an MMO setting. Also -- which should be more than evident -- I am a huge fan of the Star Wars franchise. As a roleplayer, I always like the idea of being able to do whatever I want in an MMO -- truly creating my own story. I like it when a developer gives me the blocks, and I stack them the way I want to. I build my castle the way I envision it. So you can imagine when I heard there were class restrictions on races in Star Wars: The Old Republic, I said (and I quote), "LOLOMGWTGDairyQueen-LOLOMGBBtheQ![TM]" I thought it was a really, really bad idea. How was I going to make my pink, cybernetic, Nightsister Wookiee? Then I realized that particular Wookiee would totally be unimmersing, which is exactly what I despise about a good chunk of MMOs.

So after dealing with my temporary bout with insanity, I realized immersion was more important than my desire to play with blocks, but I still wanted to make these characters the best they could be. Now it was time to find out as much as I could about the species I will be able to play. Follow me after the break to see what I found.

As some of you may know, I love roleplaying in MMOs. Most of the MMOs I've played have had RPG tagged at the end. Even though it's not required to roleplay to enjoy an MMORPG, immersion is compounded when you do, therefore fun is compounded, too. In the Star Wars universe, I could not help but wrap myself in lore when I played a soldier or agent of the Galactic Empire. From line and formation to order and procedure -- all of this was in service to His Majesty, the Emperor. Of all the characters I made over my seven years of Star Wars Galaxies, my Imperial characters were the most purpose-driven.

When Bioware announced the trooper class for Star Wars: The Old Republic, many players asked who would want to play a clone. There's no personality there, no motivation or character development, right? I disagree very strongly. In fact, I will go so far as to say I believe there is only one binding factor between soldier types: loyalty. Even then there are different types of loyalties and different motivations behind an individual character's loyalties.

E3 2010: Hands-on with Clone Wars Adventures

Arriving at the SOE booth at E3, one is assaulted with the shininess of their latest upcoming titles, DC Universe Online and The Agency. But scattered about the booth were demo stations for many of their other upcoming games including the recently announced Clone Wars Adventures. We haven't heard much about this game since it was announced (and our subsequent interview with the lead designer), but we got to sit down at E3 and find out what's involved.

As a quick refresher, CWA is less a traditional MMORPG and more a virtual lobby where players can access a number of minigames. There's no leveling or quests or equipment with stats. It's more Free Realms and less EverQuest. It will be free-to-play as a Flash-based browser title when it arrives this fall. But how does all this actually play? Click past the jump for more info.

New Star Wars online game revealed: Clone Wars Adventures [Update]

While we've heard the rumors of a third Star Wars online title coming our way, today it's confirmed: Clone Wars Adventures will launch this fall! Unlike Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars: The Old Republic, Clone Wars Adventures is aimed at a younger demographic (but may appeal to the older as well), in the vein of what SOE did with Free Realms. Sony is shying away from calling this an "MMO," preferring the term "virtual world" instead as there won't be leveling or quests.

Capitalizing on the Clone Wars TV series' popularity, CWA offers a pick of three playable classes (Jedi, Padawan and Clone Trooper) and will be more minigame focused. Players will socialize in hubs, meet iconic Star Wars characters, and head off together or solo for a variety of activities, including spaceship battles, tower defense, card games, droid programming and speeder bike racing. Destructoid is reporting that about 20 minigames will be present at launch. Fun amenities, such as pets and player housing, will be offered as well.

Clone Wars Adventures will be free to play with an optional membership, so everyone will be able to sample the goods without worry. The official website is chock-full of info and screenshots, although a lot of the smaller details are obviously forthcoming. We'll be able to get a closer look at this title when we travel to E3 later this month, so stay tuned!

Rumor: SOE to launch casual browser MMO for Clone Wars

We're chalking this one up as a rumor for now, but word has it that Sony Online Entertainment is developing another Star Wars MMO property, a casual browser game specifically based on the Clone Wars IP. The info comes from Ten Ton Hammer's Cody Bye, who writes:

"Ten Ton Hammer has learned from an inside source that Sony Online Entertainment has once again partnered with LucasArts to do another Star Wars MMO. While we have not yet learned the title of the upcoming game, it sounds like SOE is planning to use the browser-based Free Realms engine to power the game, and the game's setting will be the Clone Wars."

Massively has not heard anything yet to corroborate this as fact, but let's face it -- this was just too juicy to ignore. If we hear more on this while we're at PAX and Dragon*Con, we'll be sure to let you know.

KotORO it ain't: There's a third Star Wars MMO out there

Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Online (or more likely, Star Wars: The Old Republic) apparently aren't the only two Star Wars MMOs out there. We didn't originally mention this because lacking the Star Wars bit it was under the radar of our normal coverage, but McDonald's is including keys to virtual worlds for kids in its Happy Meals.

Among the worlds: a Sci-Fi environment based on the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which hits theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom today. The environment is some kind of space station, and be there Yoda will. (You see what we did there?) So if you're really, really desperate to wander around a Star Wars-based virtual world other than SWG, well ... this is your chance, right?

Yeah, okay, it's probably best to wait for KotoRO. We just thought you should know in case you're really hardcore.
