With all the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/07/bigpoint-vs-bioware-ceo-says-the-old-republic-will-never-be-pr/">cries of doom and gloom</a> against <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> -- not to mention <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/05/bioware-doctors-disappointed-in-ea-louse/">accusations of a wildly bloated production budget</a> -- one may be led to believe that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>TOR</em></a> will fail even before it sees the light of day. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea/">EA</a>, on the other hand, is expressing a calm confidence in the game's potential longevity and financial success.<br />
<br />
<p><a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-07-star-wars-tor-is-a-10-year-opportunity">According to Eurogamer</a>, EA's CFO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-brown/">Eric Brown</a> predicts that <em>TOR </em>will not only last over a decade, but will be profitable even if there are fewer than a million subscribers: <em>"Our assumptions for break-even and profitability are not seven-digit subscribers. We think we can run and operate a very successful and profitable MMO at different levels. The key thing here is to really perfect the product. We're shooting for an extremely high quality game experience. We view this as a 10-year opportunity." </em><br />
<br />
Brown previously admitted that <em>TOR </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/ea-swtor-is-our-largest-project/">is the single largest project in the history of EA</a>, and industry analysts have predicted that the title <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/07/bigpoint-vs-bioware-ceo-says-the-old-republic-will-never-be-pr/">would need at least a million subscribers to break even</a>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/ea-puts-faith-in-the-old-republics-lifespan-and-profits/">EA puts faith in The Old Republic's lifespan and profits</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. Their choice for the position has been M. Beau Paradowski, an experienced 17 year financial veteran who has previously held the CFO chair for Optasite Inc. and <a href="http://www.clearwire.com/">Clearwire Technologies</a>.<br />

There's been another shift in the staffing over at NCsoft West. This time, former CEO Chris Chung will be moving aside to let Jaeho Lee take his place. Lee was the chief financial officer of NCsoft, and his appointment at NC West was made with the intention of improving the subsidiary's communication with home base in Korea. NCsoft's corporate PR director Jae Sung Lee <a href="http://kotaku.com/5253802/ncsoft-shifts-nc-west-leadership-to-korea">gave a comment to Kotaku</a> regarding the move:<br /><br /><em>"As part of the corporation's global strategy, global management grows increasingly important, and the need to work together across business units becomes paramount to our success. This personnel change increases our ability in each market to remain competitive."</em><br /><br />Chris Chung hasn't been turfed out on to the front doorstep as a result of the move and will remain where he is at NCsoft West, albeit with a lesser job title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/ncsoft-west-gets-a-new-ceo/">NCsoft West gets a new CEO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 15 May 2009 10:00:00 EST. The troubles of some companies are still coming to light, as is the case with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a>. James Lee from <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz">GamesIndustry.biz</a> writes that <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> has reported its Q4 2008 financial results with <em>"an operating loss of USD 23.3 million, caused by a depreciation of USD 22.8 million due to the lagging performance of <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com">Age of Conan</a>." </em><br /><br />In addition, <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;func_id=1334&amp;table=CONTENT">Funcom CFO Olav Sandes has given notice of his resignation</a>. Sandes is not the first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gaute-godager">high level employee to quit in recent months</a>, but all is not doom and gloom. Funcom's Q4 2008 subscription revenues from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> have shot up to USD 8.7 million, <a href="http://www.funcom.com/wsp/funcom/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;func_id=1335&amp;table=CONTENT">up from USD 1.2 million year-on-year</a>, Lee reports. Funcom expects a Q1 2009 revenue of between USD 6 million and 8 million, largely comprised of subscription fees for <em>Age of Conan</em>. <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/funcom-reports-q4-USD23-3m-loss">James Lee's GamesIndustry.biz article</a> has further details on Funcom's financial situation.<hr />

Another juicy bit of news floated our way from Cryptic Studios, following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">a week of non-stop juicy morsels</a>. They've announced that they've <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=176&amp;Itemid=31">hired Ed Roffman to take over the position of chief financial officer</a> effective immediately. Roffman has a long history on the financial side of the industry, working with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/activision">Activision</a> for much of the 1980's and several smaller software companies since then. He should be a strong asset on the Cryptic executive team.<br /><br />The hiring of a new CFO (a new position for the Los Gatos developer) is only further confirmation of Cryptic Studios' aspirations to become an independent development powerhouse. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> will be the first title developed<u><strong> and</strong></u> published by Cryptic, so it's crucial that they have the appropriate financial oversight to really see this project all the way through. And with current speculation that they're also working on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/just-what-is-cryptic-working-on/">at least two other original titles as well</a>, this need is only going to be amplified with time.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17574">Gamasutra</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/23/cryptic-studios-hires-new-suit/">Cryptic Studios hires new suit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Feb 2008 10:00:00 EST.
