Think the PC is losing its grip as the dominant platform when it comes to gaming innovation? Not so fast, says <a href="http://www.valvesoftware.com/">Valve's</a> Gabe Newell. In fact, he even cites MMOs as a leading cause of the PC platform's continued innovation. And when Newell speaks, gamers and game makers listen, as his company is an industry heavyweight responsible for the likes of <em>Half-Life</em>, <em>Left 4 Dead</em>, and <em>Counterstrike</em> (not to mention the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/about/">Steam</a> digital distribution platform). <br />
<br />
Yesterday, at the <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/">Consumer Electronics Show</a> in Las Vegas, Newell sung the praises of Intel's new GPU/CPU and also <a href="http://www.gamersmint.com/gabe-newell-pc-still-the-the-centre-of-innovation-for-gaming">offered a counterpoint</a> to those who feel that consoles like the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 have overtaken the PC as industry catalysts.<br />
<br />
"<em>We see [the PC] as the center of innovation of everything that's going on, whether it's microtransactions, MMOs, free-to-play, or something like </em><a href="http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=291549705119">CityVille</a><em> which -- after its first month -- has 84 million people playing</em>," Newell said. "<em>To us, this is just an indication of why open platforms are where innovations are going to occur</em>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/valves-gabe-newell-recognizes-the-innovation-of-mmos/">Valve's Gabe Newell recognizes the innovation of MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 23:00:00 EST. As if the idea behind the <a href="http://universe.lego.com/"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a> MMO wasn't already pretty awesome in our books, this shiny new trailer straight from the CES floor has cranked up the previous levels of awesome to 11. In the new launch trailer we're treated to zombie pirates, ninjas, characters building race cars in bullet-time, rockets, and all manner of other cool-looking <a href="http://www.lego.com">LEGO</a> craziness. <br /> <br /> Along with the shiny new trailer, we've also managed to get our hands on a good number of screenshots that not only show off some of the environs that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Netdevil/">Netdevil</a> have created, but shed some more light on how things will work inside <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/LEGO-Universe/"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a>. According to what we've gleaned from the CES reports, the "LEGO brick lies at the center of the experience" so players will be able to use them for everything from completing simple building challenges to "sophisticated brick-by-brick building." Netdevil has also tapped a group of LEGOmaniacs called LUPs (LEGO Universe partners) to help them build imaginative content for the game. <br /> <br /> We've got the trailer for you behind the break, and gathered up the screenshots into the gallery below. Either way you go, it looks like we're in for some seriously fun <em>LEGO Universe</em> adventures!<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ces-2010-lego-universe-screenshots/">CES 2010: Lego Universe screenshots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ces-2010-lego-universe-screenshots/#2601077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/lego_mmog-2009-10-16-16-20-59-40_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ces-2010-lego-universe-screenshots/#2601078"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/lego_mmog-2009-12-11-15-02-41-28_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ces-2010-lego-universe-screenshots/#2601079"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/lego_mmog-2009-12-14-15-56-19-90_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ces-2010-lego-universe-screenshots/#2601080"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/lego_mmog-2009-12-15-11-52-34-67_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/ces-2010-lego-universe-screenshots/#2601081"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/lego_mmog-2009-12-15-13-54-15-68_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/09/ces-2010-lego-universe-unveils-trailer-full-of-zombie-pirate-aw/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2010: LEGO Universe unveils trailer full of zombie pirate awesome</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/09/ces-2010-lego-universe-unveils-trailer-full-of-zombie-pirate-aw/">CES 2010: LEGO Universe unveils trailer full of zombie pirate awesome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 09 Jan 2010 16:00:00 EST. For those who haven't previously heard of this game -- and why it's already caught the attention of the gaming press -- it's a massively multiplayer online game geared towards younger players (E10+ ESRB rating) with parental controls providing another layer of security from evil netizens. Despite this target demographic, and perhaps because of the sweet simplicity of the game's concepts and unique art style shown off thus far, a fair number of adults are eager to play it as well. <br /><br />Added to its appeal is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms"><em>Free Realms</em></a> will be playable on both PC and the PS3; it's one of the three upcoming PC/Console MMOs on the way from Sony -- along with <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em></a> and <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. <em>Free Realms</em> will have most of the trappings of your standard fantasy MMO fare -- which might seem like the kiss of death coming from a company already offering multiple fantasy MMO titles -- but <em>Free Realms</em> will have its own unique twists that differentiate it from most other MMOs on the market. <em>Free Realms</em> is slated for release in Q2 2009, free of charge, and will be funded through microtransactions, purchasable extras, and in-game ads. <br /><br /><a href="http://blogs.ign.com/Matt-IGN/">Matt Casamassina</a> from <a href="http://pc.ign.com">IGN</a> has written an excellent preview of <em>Free Realms</em> and nails down some details which were hazy until CES 2009. While <a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/943/943877p1.html">the IGN <em>Free Realms</em> preview</a> is short, it's simply packed with details about the game and worth checking out if <em>Free Realms</em> appeals to you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/11/free-realms-impressions-from-ces-2009/">Free Realms impressions from CES 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 20:00:00 EST. Kaz Hirai of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-computer-entertainment ">Sony Computer Entertainment</a> mentioned in his <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/">Consumer Electronics Show</a> speech that <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/home-downloaded-by-3-4-million">3.4 million PlayStation 3 users</a> have downloaded <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/home"><em>Home</em></a>. It was, however, announced too early according to key members of the <em>Home</em> team in an interview with <a href="http://www.developmag.com">Develop</a>.<br /><br />Announcing <em>Home</em> back at the 2007 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc">Game Developer's Conference</a> had the effect of stoking the interest of third parties (not to mention gamers and virtual world residents), but there was no where to run with their projects, given the early stage of <em>Home</em>'s development at that time. Indeed, <em>Hom</em>e's Game Director Peter Edward feels that initially some developers were reluctant to get involved, but that situation is beginning to change. Edward says, <em>"The feedback we've been getting is that, in the early days, it was a bit thin on the ground in terms of support and tools, but now it's mature and everybody's starting to produce some really interesting stuff."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/despite-3-4-million-downloads-playstation-home-announced-too-ea/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Despite 3.4 million downloads, PlayStation Home announced too early</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/despite-3-4-million-downloads-playstation-home-announced-too-ea/">Despite 3.4 million downloads, PlayStation Home announced too early</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 19:30:00 EST. However, despite the fact that most of the underlying magic is happening far away from your own screen, MMO clients still take up a number of gigs of space, as laptop users who regularly play different titles know all too well. But since an MMO client is really just an access point then, there's no reason why it has to be tied to any one machine or location, particularly if you're on the go for much of the time.<br /><br />While the typical solution for some MMO gamers with a preference for portability is to keep their game clients on a portable drive (myself included), even these small drives are beginning to look downright clunky compared to some of the other options available, or soon-to-be available.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/new-sdxc-cards-to-allow-for-greater-mmo-portability/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New SDXC cards to allow for greater MMO portability</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/new-sdxc-cards-to-allow-for-greater-mmo-portability/">New SDXC cards to allow for greater MMO portability</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 18:00:00 EST. The popularity of titles like <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/club-penguin/">Club Penguin</a></span> and <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Webkinz/">Webkinz</a></span> is undeniable. This past Christmas saw the Webkinz servers just <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/31/nytimes-says-childrens-virtual-playgrounds-are-serious-business/">crushed under the new load of happy plush owners</a>. It shouldn't come as a surprise that traditional game-makers are looking to this niche as a new area for profit. Earlier this month we brought you the news from CES that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> would be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/a-ces-interview-with-soe-ceo-john-smedley-pt-1/">rolling out a new 'pay-it-forward' style community outreach program</a> with the title <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Free-Realms/" style="font-style: italic;">Free Realms</a>.<br /> <br />But ... what exactly is <span style="font-style: italic;">Free Realms</span>? Today we've got some impressions of that title for you, gleaned from watching pre-recorded video of gameplay at the Consumer Electronics Show. We also spoke with Laura Naviaux, Director of Global Marketing for SOE and SOE CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/search/?q=John%20Smedley">John Smedley</a> about the project, to get a feel for their enthusiasm about the game. While generally here at Massively you're far more likely to see us discussing a game like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> or <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em>, this is a title well worth looking into. Free Realms is essentially an attempting to combine the look and feel of a traditional MMO title with the conversation and mini-game focus of a kiddie game. With very little exposure to the public in a 'hands-on' format as of yet, it's hard to gauge how successfully the title actually achieves that goal.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/">Free Realms</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/#2418175"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/freerealmshouseexterior_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Player Housing - Exterior" title="Player Housing - Exterior" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/#2418166"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/freerealms_houseinterior_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Player Housing - Interior" title="Player Housing - Interior" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/#2418165"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/freerealms_fishingjob_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/#2418168"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/freerealms_newpet_pony_thumbnail.png" alt="Pet Pony" title="Pet Pony" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/free-realms/#2418169"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/11/freerealms_newpet_spikedragon_thumbnail.png" alt="Pet Spiked Dragon" title="Pet Spiked Dragon" /></a></div><br /> <br /> The ideas they're introducing with the game are intriguing just the same. The developers have obviously looked to other casual titles for inspiration, and have taken notes from the successes and failures of these other online projects. What results is a m&eacute;lange of the familiar and the original that almost begs for further clarification. Read on for descriptions of their loose 'class' system (which will be familiar to fans of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/The-Agency/">The Agency</a></em>), the idea behind their instant play system, and what exactly you're going to be able to buy with microtransactions.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/ces-2008-what-the-heck-is-free-realms/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2008: What the heck is Free Realms?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/ces-2008-what-the-heck-is-free-realms/">CES 2008: What the heck is Free Realms?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 30 Jan 2008 10:00:00 EST. When the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> beta community expressed concern with the combat controls and overall balance last year <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">FunCom</a> listened. That -- as we all remember -- was the first delay of the game from last August into this year. From what we've been seeing from the game at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/hands-on-with-age-of-conans-barbarian-class/">CES</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/ces-2008-age-of-conan-converts-at-least-one-player/">2008</a> it was a wise decision. So when the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/funcom-decides-age-of-conan-needs-more-time-aka-delay/">announcement</a> was made that the release date for <em>AoC</em> was pushed back eight weeks, we assumed there was another good reason. <br /><br />There was a strong suspicion that the reasons for delay were bug and polish related -- turns out that suspicion was right after all. Thankfully most people in the community seem understanding, which is good to hear. It's also good to hear that FunCom has learned their lesson from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online"><em>Anarchy Online's</em></a> buggy launch. The first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/20/age-of-conan-officially-rated-m-prestige-class-changes-possible/">impression</a> for an MMO is everything and we believe Gaute when he says he believes they made the right decision.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/age-of-conans-gaute-godager-explains-delay-feels-confident/">Age of Conan's Gaute Godager explains delay, feels confident</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 11:00:00 EST. The unique title, a brand-new blend of the shooter and MMO genres, was featured in a hands-on talk over pre-recorded video; a compromise in the face of demoing an online title in the unfamiliar surroundings of Las Vegas. That talk, given by the mile-a-minute lead designer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/joystiq-interview-hal-milton-lead-designer-the-agency/">Hal Milton</a>, has been covered endlessly at other sites. You can view t<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/gametrailers-video-developer-walkthrough-for-the-agency/">he complete discussion in video format</a>, or read a great <a href="http://www.gamersinfo.net/index.php?art/id:2060">writeup of the event</a> over at GamersInfo. <br /><br />Some of the most interesting tidbits the developers were willing to discuss that day weren't on the guided tour. Lead Designer Hal Milton and Design Director <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Matt%20Wilson">Matt Wilson</a> were willing and able to discuss several aspects of the project still in the development stages with us and our friends at Joystiq; we were able to pick their brains on the game's business model, the fantastic world they're creating, character advancement, future content additions, and the numerous challenges of creating a game that straddles two platforms. <br /><br />Easily one of the most refreshing things about <em>The Agency</em> is the humor that the developers are aiming to introduce to the world, as Hal Milton explains: One of the things I love about the spy genre is that everyone automatically gets it. I love fantasy, I love sci-fi, I love writing those stories, but whenever I try to describe the game concept I have to go in and back-fill for like ten minutes. "And then Sir Clamdar of Thobordoxy grabbed the Handbag of Doom." Or, "the year was 2753, and the Federation ..." Most people don't care. They just want to jump into the world and know where they stand, as opposed to being dropped into a world completely clueless. That's what's great about the Agency, there's a lot of similarities but our world is so different from the real world that they start to experience the humor and flavor.<span style="font-style: italic;"><br /><br /></span>Read on for more 'covert intel' you may not have seen discussed elsewhere on this blockbuster in-development title.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-agency/">The Agency</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-agency/#923949"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/07/agency_1024_image008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-agency/#923948"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/07/agency_1024_image007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-agency/#923947"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/07/agency_1024_image006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-agency/#923946"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/07/agency_1024_image005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-agency/#923945"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/07/agency_1024_image004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><span style="font-style: italic;"></span><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/ces-2008-a-covert-intel-briefing-on-the-agency/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CES 2008: A covert intel briefing on The Agency</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/ces-2008-a-covert-intel-briefing-on-the-agency/">CES 2008: A covert intel briefing on The Agency</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 15:45:00 EST. Whether you have or haven't heard about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-agency"><em>The Agency</em></a>, chances are that you don't know too much about the actual game yet -- like most of us here at Massively. Over the past few days <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/new-screenshots-from-the-agency/">screenshots</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/watch-the-first-gameplay-video-of-the-agency/">videos</a> from CES have been making their way out into the wild, but aside from that there has been little other information. <br /><br />Well no more! <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/index.php">Gametrailers</a> has posted up a three-part video developer <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29479.html">walkthrough</a> (also from CES, imagine that!) of some pre-alpha gameplay footage for everyone interested to devour in a crazed frenzy. The entire gameplay footage you'll see on the screen behind the mysterious glasses-wearing-developer was captured using <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraps">FRAPS</a>. So they've went and captured actual server-time play on separate clients in Seattle and San Diego, which is promisingly honest of them in a game were lag is such a huge factor. <br /><br />One thing we get to see is the character selection screen, although there is no creation screen to show. Most likely the creation process hasn't been finished (or maybe even started) yet, but promises are made towards having lots of visual options to pick for your persona. Our only concern is that he mentions we'll have to unlock said hairs, clothings, etc before we can use them, which usually means more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/25/the-daily-grind-getting-ground-under/">grinding</a>.<br /><br />There's a lot to see in the three videos beyond the character screen (including some <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qbert">Q*bert</a> gameplay footage?) but one aspect that really stood out to us was the whole concept of "Agent Moments" where you get to do some crazy action movie stunt. These Agent Moments are said to be either passive experiences or something more akin to God of War with timed button presses. We just hope they don't overuse the button presses too much, as they can turn from cool to annoying quick.<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.warcry.com/news/view/80496-CES-2008-The-Agency-Developer-Walkthrough-at-GameTrailers">Warcry Network</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/gametrailers-video-developer-walkthrough-for-the-agency/">Gametrailers' video developer walkthrough for The Agency</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 15:00:00 EST. In an interview with Gametap at the Consumer Electronics Show going on in Vegas, Schilling said that <em>Copernicus</em> is a "working title" but revealed no other information regarding the game.<br /><br />Given what very little <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/17/a-glimpse-of-things-to-come-from-38-studios/">we've seen from a previous news clip</a> - possibly a knight atop a running horse - shown late last year, we can surmise that the game is going to be set in some ancient medieval era. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a>' game <em>Copernicus</em> may or may not be associated with <strong><em>the</em></strong> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolaus_Copernicus">Nicolaus Copernicus</a> who lived from 1473 to 1543. Copernicus was the first astronomer to postulate that the sun was the center of the solar system and not the Earth, which had been the belief for centuries. His book, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_revolutionibus_orbium_coelestium" title="De revolutionibus orbium coelestium">On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres</a></em>, is regarded as the work that started modern astronomy and was pivotal to the beginning of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_Revolution" title="Scientific Revolution">Scientific Revolution</a>.<br /><br />Or it might have absolutely nothing to do with the famous scientist at all. It's common knowledge that Schilling is a huge <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>Everquest </em></a>and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>WoW</em></a> player, and during the Gametap interview the famed Red Sox pitcher admitted that he's been playing a lot of my current favorite, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>. Several video games and their respective creators were honored at the fifty-ninth Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards at CES 2008 in Las Vegas. The awards spotlighted some of the most groundbreaking titles in development of massively multiplayer online graphical role playing games as well as user generated content or game mods. <br /><br />The winners of the first category for development of MMORPGs were Sony Online Entertainment for <em>Everquest </em>(Laura Naviaux), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> (Mike Morhaime) and AOL/Time Warner for <em>Neverwinter Nights</em> (Don Daglow).<br /><br />And the winners of the second category for user generated content/game modification were EA for <em>Pinball Construction</em> (Bill Budge), Id Software for <em>Quake</em> (John Carmack) and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/linden-lab">Linden Lab</a> for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> (Philip Rosedale).<br /><br />Pictured from left to right: Daglow, Budge, Carmack, Naviaux, Rosedale, Morhaime<br /><br />We really only have just one thing to mention. If you're the representative of a multi-billion-dollar international corporation like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/activision-blizzard">Activision Blizzard</a>, shouldn't you consider something other than raiding your dad's closet for a 1970's brown polyester suit? Although, only really rich people can afford to look broke, because they buy good stuff and wear it forever. So when Mike got it, it was probably very chic... in the 70's.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/video-game-giants-awarded-at-ces-2008/">Video game giants awarded at CES 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 18:30:00 EST. <br />Reader Griz sends us <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com/wsp/conan/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&amp;func_id=1036&amp;template=inc_images&amp;selected=1036">this link</a> to some amazing new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> screenshots debuting at CES. At first I wasn't sure that these were in-game photos until I scrutinized them more closely, they look so good. But they appear to be the real deal. As if the anticipation over this thing could get any hotter.<br /><br />My favorite of the bunch, which include various demons and beasties, is the shot of a war mammoth being beset by spectral warriors while grey, hazy clouds mass overhead. What's going on in this shot? Unlike what you typically imagine when you hear the term <a href="http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/07/12/3dconnexions-spacenavigator/">'3D peripheral'</a>, this mouse looks much more down-to-earth. There's no gimbals, you don't suspend your hand in an industrial-looking contraption; there are just buttons that act as 3D spatial manipulators. To turn right, for instance, you twist buttons on either side of the mouse to the right. This has the advantage of being much more intuitive.<br /><br />But does it work? I'm interested in trying this out, but wonder if the software this thing will ship with will be compatible with your favorite 3D worlds and games. If there isn't support for such a thing, then it's just a new mouse with extra buttons that don't do anything. If anyone within the sound of my voice is at CES right now, go find this thing at <a href="http://www.sandiotech.com/">Sandio</a>'s booth at South Hall 225519!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.mercextra.com">Mercextra</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/ces-sandios-3d-mouse/">CES: Sandio's 3D mouse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST. The technology behind the keynote -- a virtual performance of 'Walkin' on the Sun' by actual <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smash_Mouth">Smash Mouth</a> members -- will showcase the latest improvements in motion capture, streaming media, and multicore processors.<br /><br />I'm glad Intel is taking such an interest in the future of online social environments, but Smash Mouth? Hey, I enjoyed that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm">earworm</a> as much as anyone when it debuted ... in <strong>1997</strong>. Can we move on, please? And 'Third Life'? Does this mean we can expect next year's presentation to be called 'Fourth Life'? Will we see a 'Three-point-Five-point-Two Life' between now and then? Stick with hardware, Intel, and let <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TBWA%5CChiat%5CDay">Chiat-Day</a> handle the promotional stuff.<br /><br />[Update: Sister site Engadget has a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/live-from-intels-ces-press-event/">liveblog of the keynote</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/ces-keynote-to-demo-cool-new-tech-despite-ridiculous-name/">CES keynote to demo cool new tech despite ridiculous name</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 09:00:00 EST.
