Following the summer drama that came to be known as monoclegate, the past six months have been challenging for <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s players and developers alike. When players learned that cash-shop clothing was priced higher than its real-life equivalent, the quirky story of the $80 monocle swept across gaming blogs like wildfire. The story's tone soon <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/26/eve-evolved-the-day-that-eve-online-died/">turned a great deal more sinister</a> with the leak of an internal company newsletter titled Greed is Good, and a second leaked memo from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a>'s CEO added more fuel to the flames. Ultimately, players spoke with their wallets; subscriptions fell by at least 8%, and with no financial backup plan, CCP was forced to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/19/ccp-layoffs-affect-20-of-worldwide-staff-company-focusing-on-e/">lay off 20% of its staff worldwide</a>.<br />
<br />
The staff members who remained were faced with the task of turning things around, and with the feature-packed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/crucible"><em>Crucible</em></a> expansion, they <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/04/eve-evolved-everything-there-is-to-know-about-crucible/">did so spectacularly</a>. In just a few short months, hundreds of high-profile features, graphical overhauls, and quality of life improvements breathed new life into a neglected universe. I think most players recognise that this has been a genuine turn-around from within CCP, but some are still skeptical that the company has really reformed. The question on everyone's mind is whether CCP can really keep up this quality of development in the coming year as it delivers two full expansions and integrates <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> with <a href="http://www.dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Perhaps nobody is better qualified to assess that than CSM delegate and former CCP game designer Mark "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Seleene/">Seleene</a>" Heard, who recently attended the December CSM summit and witnessed first-hand the aftermath of monoclegate and <em>Crucible</em>'s development.<br />

In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I delve into <a href="http://seleenes-sandbox.blogspot.com/2011/12/csm-6-december-summit-report.html">Mark's CSM Summit report</a> to find out how development at CCP has changed, what we can expect in 2012, and how monocle-gate has affected CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Hilmar-Veigar-Ptursson/">Hilmar Veigar P&eacute;tursson</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/08/eve-evolved-development-on-eve-in-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Development on EVE in 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/08/eve-evolved-development-on-eve-in-2012/">EVE Evolved: Development on EVE in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 08 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST. The cries of "Free CCP Abathur" have been heard. He's one of the growing number of <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developers recruited from among the ranks of the playerbase, and in Abathur's case -- he's someone very well-versed in the dynamics of nullsec warfare. His dev blog "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=725">The All Caps Ship Blog</a>" deals with changes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> is making to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> that have long been a hot button with the playerbase.<br />
<br />
It's not surprising that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/20/eve-evolved-the-road-ahead-for-0-0-alliances/">capital ship balancing is a controversial topic</a> among players of the sci-fi MMO. Capital ship pilots in New Eden have invested significant amounts of training time and in-game wealth into piloting these massive ships, be it carriers and supercarriers, dreadnaughts, or titans. Some of CCP Abathur's ideas on balancing capital ships seemed to be fairly well-received by the playerbase, but later proposed changes from more senior devs at CCP appeared to be taking the game mechanics in a different direction. (Hence the "Free CCP Abathur" meme.) Ultimately, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/ccp-games-alters-plans-for-eves-capital-ships-in-dominion-expan/">some of the major capital ship changes didn't deploy</a> with the <em>Dominion</em> expansion launch, but are arriving in <em>EVE</em> today.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/an-overview-of-the-eve-online-capital-ship-changes-arriving-toda/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>An overview of the EVE Online capital ship changes arriving today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/21/an-overview-of-the-eve-online-capital-ship-changes-arriving-toda/">An overview of the EVE Online capital ship changes arriving today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 10:00:00 EST. <br />
The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dominion"><em>Dominion</em></a> expansion for <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is so-named for its heavy focus on the game mechanics of "Sovereignty" or control of territory in the New Eden galaxy. There's been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/08/eve-evolved-dominion-be-damned/">no small amount of controversy</a> surrounding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a>'s proposed system, however, particularly as it's slated to go live on December 1st with the <em>Dominion</em> release. While some of the core game mechanics of control are still undergoing revision, <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP Games</a> recently explained how ownership of solar systems will change hands in a dev blog titled "Storming the Gates." <br />

These multi-billion ISK behemoths aren't just an investment in terms of currency -- being able to pilot a capital ship effectively is a time investment as well, given <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a>'s real time skill training system. <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=512">The writing's been on the wall</a> for a long time though. Considering the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/21/titan-proliferation-in-eve-online/">sheer numbers of capital ships being fielded</a> in the game, some changes might just be a good thing for <em>EVE Online</em>. <br /><br /><em>EVE</em> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-abathur">CCP Abathur</a>'s dev blog "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=696">Dominion - The Capital Battlefield</a>" frames the current state of capital ship warfare with a look at how dreadnaughts and carriers entered the game, and how over time their significance was eclipsed by supercarriers like motherships and titans. The big announcements are the changes being made to the various classes of capital ships in <em>EVE</em>, and Abathur walks us through the boosts and nerfs that will soon affect the game's numerous capital ship pilots in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dominion"><em>Dominion</em></a> expansion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/major-rebalance-of-capital-ships-coming-to-eve-online-in-dominio/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Major rebalance of capital ships coming to EVE Online in Dominion expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/major-rebalance-of-capital-ships-coming-to-eve-online-in-dominio/">Major rebalance of capital ships coming to EVE Online in Dominion expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 16 Sep 2009 10:00:00 EST. So why, then, is sovereignty so important to the game's players? <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is a game where everything takes place in a single setting, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">New Eden galaxy</a> comprised of thousands of solar systems. While a large percentage of the game's playerbase remains in high security space controlled by NPC factions, for others it's 0.0 space (aka nullsec) where the real action is. In a nutshell, 0.0 is a lawless frontier where the rarest ores and minerals, the highest bounty NPCs, the most lucrative exploration content (in known space) is found. Of course, these regions are the most hotly contested territories in <em>EVE Online</em> and those resources found within are a <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/09/the-great-war/">driver for the continual conflict</a> that engulfs New Eden.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/breaking-the-chains-of-sovereignty-in-eve-onlines-dominion-expa/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Breaking the chains of Sovereignty in EVE Online's Dominion expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/breaking-the-chains-of-sovereignty-in-eve-onlines-dominion-expa/">Breaking the chains of Sovereignty in EVE Online's Dominion expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 19:00:00 EST. The ship and capsule technologies in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> enable you to traverse solar systems in mere seconds, unleash hails of destruction that vaporize space stations, and provides <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/eve-visual-guide-before-you-undock/989719/">immortality through cloning</a>... but you have to stow prostitutes, slaves, marines, and livestock in a single cargo hold? Sloshing around in there with your fuel, no less. <br /><br />While the commingling of your livestock with the military forces you've rescued is hardly ranked as a critical issue in the game, not having enough room in your cargo bay for jump drive fuel <em>is</em>. Today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha-1.5"><em>Apocrypha 1.5</em></a> release made significant changes to ships capable of using jump drives. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/eve-online-mini-expansion-apocrypha-1-5-deploys-thursday-aug-20/">We knew this was in the works</a> but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> didn't reveal any of the details until yesterday's dev blog from CCP Abathur titled "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=683">Regular or Unleaded?</a>".<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/eve-online-balancing-effort-aims-to-return-ships-to-proper-roles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online balancing effort aims to return ships to proper roles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/eve-online-balancing-effort-aims-to-return-ships-to-proper-roles/">EVE Online balancing effort aims to return ships to proper roles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 09:00:00 EST. This is a vast area for players to pursue their goals, but given how each of those solar systems is clearly mapped out, some of the feeling of being in such a deep setting is lost. There's not enough sense of the unknown. It's possible to be an explorer in the game, but the fact is that <em>truly</em> new places aren't discoverable, just hidden pockets within the known galaxy. That will change in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apocrypha"><em>Apocrypha</em> expansion</a> this March, when a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/exploration">true exploration system</a> based around wormholes is implemented. <br /><br />In his latest dev blog, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> developer CCP Whisper writes, <em>"We are going to give you uncharted, unknown places to visit via paths that shift and slide through the fabric of space. We are going to give you thousands of new solar systems which will contain new NPCs, new exploration content and new pockets of resources to exploit. You will have the chance to venture into places that promise great rewards but also bring with them great risks."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/first-details-emerge-about-true-exploration-system-in-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First details emerge about true exploration system in EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/first-details-emerge-about-true-exploration-system-in-eve-online/">First details emerge about true exploration system in EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 15:00:00 EST.
