Sure, we know that Cthulhu isn't in the Lord of the Rings Online, but you have to admit this slime-covered boss makes a pretty decent stand-in for the madness-inspiring elder god of legend. Today's dread-filled screenshot of battle comes to us from Melissa, who has been working on getting her class quests out of the way in Lord of the Rings Online. She writes in to explain what we're seeing in today's One Shots: "With Carn Dum and Urugarth being the last two steps for my Warden class quest, I signed up for a run with a kin allied to ours. Imagine our surprise when we show up at the horn and all but one of us is a hobbit. Luckily the Elf was a Minstrel, and I got this great shot as we were fighting Helchgam."

Have you pitted your skills against a boss recently? If you snapped a screenshot, we'd love to see a picture of the epic battle! Email those images to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. Please make sure your image is at least 1024px wide and has almost no visible UI. We'll post it out here for everyone to check out and give you the credit for sending it in.
We've always enjoyed Turbine's regular The Lord of the Rings Online Lorebook updates. The Lorebook is essentially a wiki that contains both gameplay information and Middle-earth lore. Some of the entries are made by players, and some are official. They usually focus on a particular character or place that Turbine has extrapolated or expanded from J.R.R. Tolkien's book trilogy.

The North American LotRO site hadn't been updated with any featured Lorebook entries in a while, but a couple new ones have finally arrived. First up is Bolgrukh -- a half-woman, half-bat horror who picks of hapless adventurers near Carn Dum. Apparently she was enslaved by Morgoth, and if you know your Middle-earth lore, you know that makes her really old. And old monsters are usually scarier than young ones!

The second entry is the Rogmul (Balrog slave) Udúnion, a level 52 Nemesis boss who will most certainly annihilate almost everyone he ever sees. He too is extremely old; the entry lists several historical events he's witnessed. And you know something's badass when its classifications are "Ancient Evil" and "Nameless." Fear!
LotRO Lorebook updates players on ancient horrors originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 28 Aug 2008 18:00:00 EST. Carn Dûm -- the seat of evil in western Middle-earth. 'Twas in this fortress that the Witch-king of Angmar reigned as an oppressor of men, elves, dwarves, and hobbits alike until he was chased off by two heroes. It's home to evil men, orcs, trolls, and some evils that do not sleep. In other words, it's awesome, and you can read all about it in Turbine's new official Lorebook entry.

Carn Dûm is one of the places that Turbine has expanded beyond what was contained in the books. While Angmar (of which Carn Dûm is a part) was, as the entry says, "only mentioned in passing in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings," Turbine has filled in the gaps with their own bits of gameplay and lore in The Lord of the Rings Online. The entry also utilizes the Google-based map of Middle-earth that Jeffrey Steefel was talking about in the Ten Ton Hammer interview we covered yesterday.
Lorebook entry looks at the heart of evil in LotRO originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 20:31:00 EST.
