Remember in Star Trek: The Motion Picture how Kirk returns to the Enterprise and shoehorns his way back into the Captain's chair, leaving the previous job-holder to be absorbed by an interstellar entity that was really a relic of NASA's space program? What a hoot that was, and it's in no way relevant to today's story of former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dan-stahl">Dan Stahl </a>resuming his duties from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/stephen-dangelo/">Stephen D'Angelo</a> after vacating the position in 2011.<br />
<br />
Stahl <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/dan-stahl-leaving-cryptic-star-trek-online/">left Cryptic in September 2011</a> for a job at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/zynga/">Zynga</a>, at which point D'Angelo assumed the producing role. Interestingly enough, Stahl <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/dan-stahl-beams-back-aboard-cryptic-studios/">quickly returned to Cryptic last December</a> but was assigned to heading up the Foundry team. <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/2874/">The saga has come full-circle</a> as Stahl returns to executive producing and D'Angelo resumes his command as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic's</a> CTO.<br />
<br />
Stahl posted a short re-introduction letter to mark his comeback: "After several eventful away team missions and a desk position training cadets in San Francisco, I'm grateful for the opportunity to be back at the helm of this very important title."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/13/dan-stahl-takes-back-the-captains-chair-in-star-trek-online/">Dan Stahl takes back the captain's chair in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 21:00:00 EST. "Boldly going where one MMO has gone before!" doesn't quite have a ring to it, but that's not deterring German developer Gameforge from grabbing a slice of the Star Trek IP for a new MMO. <a href="http://mmogame.com/">Gameforge</a> hasn't exactly been a household name up to this point, with titles such as <a href="http://us.mmogame.com/games/gamedetails/gatesofandaron"><em>Gates of Andaron</em></a> and <a href="http://us.mmogame.com/games/gamedetails/ikariam"><em>Ikariam</em></a>, but it seems like that might change now that they have a crack at one of the most recognizable science fiction franchises in the world.<br />
<br />
The unnamed Star Trek MMO will be -- yes -- a free-to-play browser title, so don't expect it to directly compete with Cryptic's own <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. <a href="http://trekweb.com/articles/2010/06/14/Gameforge-Announces-Web-Browser-New-Star-Trek-MMORPG-Game.shtml">TrekWeb reports</a> that Gameforge signed a worldwide licensing agreement with CBS Consumer Products to develop the game in the original Star Trek universe, from the classic era of Captain Kirk up through the days of Deep Space Nine. However, Atari will still hold the exclusive MMO rights to Star Trek.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/new-star-trek-mmo-in-dry-dock-courtesy-of-gameforge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Star Trek MMO in dry dock courtesy of Gameforge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/new-star-trek-mmo-in-dry-dock-courtesy-of-gameforge/">New Star Trek MMO in dry dock courtesy of Gameforge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 20:00:00 EST. A new fragrance is out, and it smells exactly like the old one. It's the gentle waft of something I'm quite familiar with: <em>Star Trek</em> fandom. Let me preface this by saying I've been a fan of <em>Star Trek</em> ever since I saw an episode of <em>The Next Generation</em> back when my parents used to tape it every week so we could watch it as a family. So when I declare that people griping about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> emphasis on combat aren't true<em> Trek</em> fans, I know the amount of weight that statement carries.<br />
<br />
And you know what? They really aren't true fans.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/the-digital-continuum-federation-stands-for-fighting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Federation stands for 'fighting'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/the-digital-continuum-federation-stands-for-fighting/">The Digital Continuum: Federation stands for 'fighting'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. The most recent discussion started up with Massively's own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/michael-zenke">Michael Zenke</a> and his <a href="http://www.mmognation.com/2008/01/30/five-reasons-sci-fi-pwns-fantasy/">"Five Reasons Sci-Fi Pwns Fantasy"</a> which prompted the return fire in question from <a href="http://www.grimwell.com/?p=133">Grimwell</a>. Both of the posts are certainly worth reading, especially if you have any kind of lingering interest in the subject matter. <br /><br />As far as we can see, there's truth to be had on both sides of the fence. However, we do have one point of contention to make with Grimwelll's argument. He states that the reason fantasy "pwns" sci-fi is that it's accessible, which is a constant argument on the matter. While we think he may have a point in that less people are inherently familiar with sci-fi, we very much disagree with his assessment that you need to be a math nerd to enjoy good sci-fi -- his example in this case being Star Trek and its now-infamous <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=PtuqjFf7-N4">technobabble</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/grimwell-gives-one-reason-fantasy-pwns-sci-fi-we-go-huh/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Grimwell gives one reason fantasy pwns sci-fi, we go "Huh?"</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/grimwell-gives-one-reason-fantasy-pwns-sci-fi-we-go-huh/">Grimwell gives one reason fantasy pwns sci-fi, we go "Huh?"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 15:00:00 EST. William Shatner and Mr. T are appearing in two <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/movies.html">new <em>World of Warcraft</em> TV commercials</a>. All <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> needs is <a href="http://www.gothehoff.com/">the Hoff</a> and it'll have the holy trinity of cheese!<br /><br />This is without a doubt one of the most awesome things we've yet reported. <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm0001558/">Mr. T</a> talks about his "<a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/night-elf">Night Elf</a> Mohawk." <a href="http://williamshatner.com/">William Shatner</a> players a <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/shaman">Shaman </a>and wears a goofy looking robe. It's exactly as funny as you'd expect, and it will be broadcast nationally soon. Blizzard announced that <a href="http://imdb.com/name/nm0873942/">Verne Troyer</a> -- aka "Minime" -- will be recording a commercial as well.<br /><br /><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">World of Warcraft</a> </em>players have already been littering guild chat with "I pity the fool who specs survival on his Hunter!" and taking screenshots of their characters screaming "KHAAAAAAN!" at the sky. So it goes without saying that these commercials will probably go over quite well.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">[EDIT: We have the videos here for your viewing pleasure!
