	Lately I've beginning to wonder whether the wait for <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> Season Six has been as interminable for other players as it seems to have been for me. Although the past several weeks have been busy in the real-life side of things, those distractions really haven't been all that good at harboring my frustration about the wait for the new stuff as I would have liked.</div>
<br />
Season Six is being readied for a move to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-trek-online">STO's</a></em> test server, Tribble, in the next couple of weeks, according to the most recent <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/3148">Ask Cryptic</a> as answered by the game's Executive Producer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dan-Stahl/">Dan Stahl</a>. The new patch will contain fleet starbases and a new fleet advancement system but not much else in the way of story-based content.<br />
<br />
That's not unexpected, however, as not one of the previous Season releases really ever contained story-based content; they've merely been game-technology pushes, and I understand that Season Six will be no different.<br />
<br />
However a couple of things have come out to the game in the past few weeks that have ruffled some hard-core Trek-fan feathers: Caitian Carriers and Ferasans.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/captain-s-log-sto-s-caitian-carriers-and-klingon-kitties/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: STO's Caitian Carriers and Klingon Kitties</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/captain-s-log-sto-s-caitian-carriers-and-klingon-kitties/">Captain's Log: STO's Caitian Carriers and Klingon Kitties</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. MMORPGs based on pre-existing intellectual properties are a tricky business, and for every <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> -- which at least makes an attempt at remaining faithful to its source material -- there's a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> or a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> that sacrifices canonical authenticity on the altar of gameplay.<br />
<br />
Then there's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/otherland"><em>Otherland</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamigo">gamigo's</a> ambitious MMO based on Tad Williams' famous sci-fi cycle. A <a href="http://www.mpogd.com/news/?ID=9116">new interview</a> with gamigo CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/patrick-streppel">Patrick Streppel</a> sheds a bit of light on the title's timeline and canon and teases fans with glimpses of what they'll see and do when they plug in to what amounts to a virtual world set in a virtual world.<br />
<br />
"Tad [Williams] has been very involved in the project from the beginning and provided lots of input to the development team on top of the source material. He is truly passionate about his vision being turned into a game," Streppel says. How will the game present that vision? It is "essentially a sequel" to the novels, and as a result of the dramatic conclusion at the end of the fourth and final book, it will now "be up to the players to get [<em>Otherland</em>] back online." The interview also delves briefly into gameplay topics, character creation, and more, so head to MPOGD.com to have a look.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/06/otherland-dev-talks-timelines-and-tad-williams-influence/">Otherland dev talks timelines and Tad Williams' influence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 16:30:00 EST. This is a big week for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, mainly because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is forging ahead with its "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/dc-universe-online-rolling-out-megaservers-on-monday/">megaservers</a>" population consolidation. To mark the occasion, we sat down with DC Comics legend <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee">Jim Lee</a> for a brief Q&amp;A.<br />
<br />
OK, you got us.<br />
<br />
We sat down with Jim Lee because he's <em>Jim Lee</em>, and we're unabashed Batfans who will jump at every opportunity to talk to the artists behind the cowl. In any event, Lee did have some interesting things to say about MMOs in general, canon in particular, and his experiences with SOE and <em>DCUO</em>. Join us after the cut to read all about it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/massively-exclusive-jim-lee-talks-batman-canon-and-dcuo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Exclusive: Jim Lee talks Batman, canon, and DCUO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/massively-exclusive-jim-lee-talks-batman-canon-and-dcuo/">Massively Exclusive: Jim Lee talks Batman, canon, and DCUO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. Move over, Batman: After a few false starts, <a href="http://www.marvel.com">Marvel's</a> finally poised to become the next big MMO superhero thing.<br />
<br />
Thursday evening, I attended <a href="http://www.gazillion.com">Gazillion Entertainment</a> and Marvel's live <a href="http://marvel.com/news/story/15731/marvel_universe_mmo_introducing_the_writer">San Francisco reveal</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/marvel-universe-online/"><em>Marvel Universe Online's</em></a> head writer, the jovial <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/brian-michael-bendis">Brian Michael Bendis</a>. Joining Brian for a lively Q&amp;A panel were Gazillion President and COO <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/david-brevik">David Brevik</a>, VP and Studio Head for <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/secret-identity">Secret Identity</a> (fka <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gargantuan-studios">Gargantuan</a>) <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/jeff-lind">Jeff Lind</a>, and VP of Games at Marvel <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/tq-jefferson">TQ Jefferson</a>. Brian's involvement in the game's story wasn't the only announcement the panelists had in store for attendees -- they almost casually confessed that players will slip into the spandex of iconic Marvel characters and that the game will be free-to-play, making it perhaps the first Western triple-A title to be designed for such a model from the ground up.<br />
<br />
Because I knew you'd be disappointed if I didn't, I dutifully asked an amused Jeff Lind about PvP, housing, crafting, voice acting, character customization, travel powers, advancement, and all those other goodies, but as you can probably guess, the devs aren't in a position to talk about sweeping systems just yet -- they want to "retain the ability to change [their] minds." So manage thy expectations accordingly! Fortunately, both Jeff and Brian were willing to chat about story, tie-ins, and <em>MUO's</em> niche in an increasingly crowded superhero MMO field, so hit the break for their thoughts and my round-up of the hot topics from the panel.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/marvel-universe-online-will-be-free-to-play-penned-by-bendis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marvel Universe Online will be free-to-play, penned by Bendis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/marvel-universe-online-will-be-free-to-play-penned-by-bendis/">Marvel Universe Online will be free-to-play, penned by Bendis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST. <br />
	Luke: What a piece of junk!<br />
	<br />
	Han: She'll make point five past lightspeed. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've made a lot of special modifications myself. But we're a little rushed, so if you'll just get on board, we'll get out of here.<br />
	<br />
	Luke: Lawlz. You can't pilot that thing. It's a YT-1300 and you're a Rebel-aligned Smuggler!<br />
	<br />
	Han: %&amp;*$ ...<br />
	<br />
	Ah yes, continuity. It might as well be a four-letter word, at least when it comes to MMORPGs based on existing intellectual properties. Sure, producers pay a lot of lip service to faithfully recreating beloved works in an online space, but the reality inevitably ends up looking like the love child of Frankenstein's monster and a duck-billed platypus.<br />
	<br />
	Why then do we keep seeing MMOs riffing on Star Wars, Star Trek, Tolkien, and even Battlestar Galactica? Easy money, of course. A better question, and one I hope to answer at the conclusion of today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-soapbox">Soapbox</a>, is why "MMORPG" automatically equals butchered continuity. In a nutshell, why is it so hard to respect the IP?</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/the-soapbox-respect-the-ip-or-why-mmos-cant/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: Respect the IP (or, why MMOs can't)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/the-soapbox-respect-the-ip-or-why-mmos-cant/">The Soapbox: Respect the IP (or, why MMOs can't)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 13:00:00 EST. This week's Ask Cryptic for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> focuses on ship combat, particularly how the damage inflicted upon your vessel affects its performance. Essentially, you'll be able to go all out in combat right up until your demise. That said, focused attacks on your specific subsystems can take them out, and losing crew members will weaken your skills in tasks that the injured or deceased personnel handled. <br /><br />The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios">Cryptic Studios</a> devs also clarify that solo players will be able to acquire the same ships as those involved in high level group play, although soloists will likely find they're not able to get through some higher level content. Endgame rewards are meant to be a guild-level pursuit, but <a href="http://www.crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a> stresses that the best ships will be available to anyone, regardless of play style.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/latest-ask-cryptic-for-star-trek-online-focuses-on-combat-balanc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Latest Ask Cryptic for Star Trek Online focuses on combat balance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/latest-ask-cryptic-for-star-trek-online-focuses-on-combat-balanc/">Latest Ask Cryptic for Star Trek Online focuses on combat balance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 18:00:00 EST. Cryptic Studios has put together a graphical timeline of the entirety of the Star Trek legacy, showing exactly when the game picks after the shows and films leave off, with the events of <em>Star Trek Online</em> taking place in 2409. When it comes to quantities of races in MMOs, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a> will probably have every other game beat. Not only does the official canon offer plenty of racial choices, but the level of person-by-person customization <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/08/watch-this-strinkingly-good-star-trek-online-character-customization-video/">offers endless combinations</a>.<br /><br />If you need some detailed examples of how all of this will work, look no further than <a href="http://startrekonline.com/ask_cryptic_3-12-09">the latest Ask Cryptic for <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek Online</span></a>. In this edition of the venerable community-driven question and answer bonanza, the focus is firmly upon visual and statistic customization choices. Yep, that's right, not only <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/describe-these-aliens-and-win-a-star-trek-online-beta-slot/">will we be allowed to make a character with ridges and point ears</a> -- we'll also be able to make them psychic or resistant to poisons as well.<br /><br />Want to make an android? Go for it, the creation process very much allows you to achieve it through visual, technical and story avenues. About the only limitation will be our imaginations and the classic Trek adherence to bipedal abundance.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/16/customizing-to-your-hearts-content-in-star-trek-online/">Customizing to your heart's content in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. Not surprisingly, many of the questions asked of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic">Cryptic</a> deal with how well they'll adhere to Star Trek canon. <br /><br />The <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic Studios</a> devs were asked about how they would handle the iconic story and characters of Star Trek, namely with voiceovers and cut scenes. The devs state that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> avoids issues of tampering with Trekkie canon by setting the game in 2409, a good 30 years after Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Voyager. So while some of the locales familiar to Star Trek fans will be present in the game, players shouldn't expect to bump into any (or many) familiar faces.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/05/ask-cryptic-explains-how-star-trek-online-will-handle-canon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ask Cryptic explains how Star Trek Online will handle canon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/05/ask-cryptic-explains-how-star-trek-online-will-handle-canon/">Ask Cryptic explains how Star Trek Online will handle canon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. We're willing to bet that when it was announced that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a> gave the go-ahead to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legendary_Pictures">Legendary Pictures</a> to help them create a <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft </a></em>movie, intense arguments erupted among the faithful. The camps are probably equally divided between "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELhtXtnV3pg&amp;feature=related">Hell, it's about time</a>" and "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worst_Episode_Ever">Worst. Idea. Ever.</a>" There is some reason to hope, given that it's being co-written by Blizzard Vice President of Creative Development Chris Metzen. Then again, description of the main character as a "kick-ass human" makes it sound as though it's going to go in a direction that favors a lowest-common-denominator approach, which doesn't always work out for the true fans.<br /><br />So, what will make this movie stand out for you? Balancing between just writing up the events of the game, and trying to expose action lying just outside of view. Stray too far, and you'll alienate the fanbase; hew too closely, no one will feel the need to read it.<br /><br />A game like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em>, though, has a fairly extensive lore, with lots of unexplored nooks and crannies just <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Warcraft-World-Rise-Horde/dp/0743471385/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1207606917&amp;sr=1-3">begging for attention</a>. We can see a great deal of promise in books based on the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Hellgate--London/">Hellgate: London</a></em> title, and can imagine the complexity of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online/">EVE Online</a></em> fiction. What's a good way to turn a game into a novel, and which worlds deserve the treatment?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/the-daily-grind-would-you-read-an-mmo-novelization/">The Daily Grind: Would you read an MMO novelization?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 08:00:00 EST.
