It's been a rough couple of years for <em>Warhammer</em> MMORPG fans, and if the rumors are true, it's about to get a bit bleaker.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://kotaku.com/5876253/thq-wipes-out-games-planned-for-2014-to-ready-itself-for-sale-says-insider">Kotaku</a> reports on a tweet by games industry insider <a href="https://twitter.com/TheKevinDent">Kevin Dent</a> that indicates that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/thq/">THQ</a> has "canceled its entire 2014 slate of releases to position the company for sale." This would include <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-40k/"><em>Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online</em></a>, which Dent referred to as "<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/TheKevinDent/status/158454172239409152">the Games Workshop MMO</a>" on his Twitter page.<br />

We'll keep you posted as we learn more.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/the-perfect-ten-sequelitis/">MMO sequels</a> are funny animals. Sequels (along with prequels and "reimaginings") are ingrained into the entertainment industry so deep that it makes sense that MMO studios would follow suit. And yet these types of games -- with their ever-growing nature and heavy involvement with loyal playerbases -- are not always conducive to such projects. More often than not, a sequel to an online game becomes its ancestor's main competition, which is not a desirable outcome for the studio.<br />
<br />
Perhaps back in the early 2000s, studios simply didn't know better. There's good evidence that the typical "hit video games need a sequel" mindset ran rampant across the industry, from the multiple attempts at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-ultima-x-odyssey/"><em>Ultima Online 2</em></a> to the release of the don't-call-it-a-sequel sequel of <a href="http://everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. Perhaps developers didn't realize that MMO players didn't necessarily want to be uprooted and moved to a new game every few years.<br />
<br />
While sequels, spin-offs and remakes are still present, the genre learned a hard lesson with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/asherons-call-2/"><em>Asheron's Call 2</em></a> in the first half of the decade. <em><a href="http://ac.turbine.com/">Asheron's Call</a> </em>was a success on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/microsoft/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine's</a> behalf, and a sequel -- with vastly improved graphics and deeper gameplay -- seemed like a logical next step. Unfortunately, it was a Greek tragedy in the making, destined for a short but memorable life in our world.<br />
<br />
This month we're going to look at the brief shining star of <em>Asheron's Call 2</em> and get all sorts of misty-eyed romantic over it!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/the-game-archaeologist-answers-asherons-call-2-the-highlights/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist answers Asheron's Call 2: The highlights</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/the-game-archaeologist-answers-asherons-call-2-the-highlights/">The Game Archaeologist answers Asheron's Call 2: The highlights</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST. Like life itself, the MMO industry doesn't often seem fair -- promising games can die premature deaths while creaky antiques continue to chug along just fine. When an MMO like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin/"><em>APB</em></a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> announces that it's closing its doors after only a couple years (or months), the first reaction is usually to ask, "What in Sam Hill happened and why are they doing this to me?" Yet what isn't always considered is the emotional fallout on behalf of the devs.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://kotaku.com/5674721/when-an-mmo-dies">Over at Kotaku</a>, Michael Fahey examined the fallout when MMOs are shuttered prematurely, using the examples of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/auto-assault/"><em>Auto Assault</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-matrix-online/"><em>The Matrix Online</em></a> as case studies. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netdevil/">NetDevil</a> spent four years developing the former, which lasted a mere fraction of that time -- 16 months -- as a live game. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-seabury/">Ryan Seabury</a> testifies to the pain that this causes for a dev team: <em>"I won't lie, it hurts like hell still over four years later... Naturally, if a universe like </em>Auto Assault <em>that you sort of mentally attach to over multiple years suddenly ceases to exist, it's like a part of you dies."</em> He personally points to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a> as the reason for<em> Auto Assault's</em> closure, stating that the game might still be in operation if it wasn't for the publisher's lack of faith.<br />
<br />
On the flip side, <em>The Matrix Online</em> had a longer run and plenty of time to prepare for the end once word was passed down. Then-Community Manager Daniel Myers says that the decision was a matter of dollars and sense. Still, Myers admits that it continues to affect him: <em>"There are still days that I wish I could log in and see the Megacity again. I don't know [if] that will ever completely stop. I kind of hope it doesn't."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/29/the-pain-and-suffering-of-mmo-shutdowns/">The pain and suffering of MMO shutdowns</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 10:00:00 EST. Last year, the news that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/23/closed-ensemble-studios-were-working-on-halo-mmo/">a <em>Halo </em>MMO was once in development</a> left us all wondering "what if?". The game was being made by Ensemble Studios, who put out the Xbox 360 RTS <em>Halo Wars</em>. The screenshot that was plastered over <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/bungie-considers-the-challenges-of-a-halo-mmo/">most stories</a> about the cancellation looked decidedly <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/">World of Warcraft</a>-y</em>, and an Ensemble representative <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/further-details-emerge-on-the-canceled-halo-mmo/">later said</a> that the more advanced versions of the game fit the <em>Halo</em> theme much better. Perhaps it looked <a href="http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/pages/HaloConcept3.html">a bit</a> <a href="http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/pages/HaloConcept2.html">like</a> <a href="http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/pages/HaloConcept1.html">this</a>. Some <a href="http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=940410">internet sleuthery</a> on fansite Halo.Bungie.Org has uncovered <a href="http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/pages/HaloConcept3.html">this gallery</a> of concept art from former Ensemble Studios artist <a href="http://www.dylancolestudio.com/">Dylan Cole</a>. The art doesn't appear to be from <em>Halo Wars</em>, and our friends at Joystiq <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/20/canceled-halo-game-concept-art-found-on-ex-ensemble-artists-sit">raised the question</a>: could this be from the canceled <em>Halo</em> MMO?<br /><br />The art is marked as being from the "<em>Halo</em> Universe", which may simply be referring to the general <em>Halo</em> world -- but maybe it isn't. At the moment it's all speculation, and Joystiq has contacted Dylan Cole to see if anything can be cleared up. Whatever it was for, it's some fine work and well worth checking out, particularly for <em>Halo</em> fans (of which we hear there are a few). Start at page one of the gallery <a href="http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/pages/HaloConcept3.html">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/22/is-this-concept-art-from-the-canceled-halo-mmo/">Is this concept art from the canceled Halo MMO?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 13:00:00 EST. Recently, Ten Ton Hammer <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/21747">sat down</a> with GameTap's Creative Director and VP of Content to discuss the death of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/myst-online-uru-live"><em>Myst Online: Uru Live</em></a>. The interview itself covers a lot of ground on the why and how of the game. Subjects like the reason GameTap originally picked up the title are covered, as well as how satisfied the publisher was with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cyan-worlds">Cyan Worlds'</a> first season of content. It's a fairly short interview, but there is some knowledge to be gleaned from it for anybody interested.<br /><br />It's not surprising to us that their biggest disappointment was a lack of subscriber interest. We have to wonder just how many people actually ended up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/06/the-escapist-on-myst-onlines-unique-narrative/">playing the game</a>, considering its alternative nature. Niche titles are loved by many of us here at Massively, so one thing we've been noticing is that some developers are still trying to figure out the exact cost-to-profit ratio when creating them. Hopefully GameTap learned something from this venture and doesn't shy away from other alternative MMOs in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/07/gametap-gets-interviewed-on-myst-onlines-untimely-demise/">GameTap gets interviewed on Myst Online's untimely demise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 07 Feb 2008 16:00:00 EST.
