A couple of months back, we announced that Atari was in the court to sell off Cryptic Studios, and that Perfect World Entertainment had stepped up to the plate to take the studio off Atari's hands. Well, as of now, the sale is complete and Cryptic is now firmly in the grasp of free-to-play leviathan Perfect World Entertainment.

According to reports, the sale cost Perfect World a staggering $49.8 million, and $30.7 is said to be going straight toward paying off Atari's existing debt. As for the projects Cryptic was previously working on -- namely Star Trek Online, Champions Online, and the upcoming Neverwinter -- it remains to be seen what will happen, but you can be sure we'll bring you the latest as soon as we get word.

Perfect World Entertainment completes acquisition of Cryptic Studios originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 09:30:00 EST.

Disney could become a major player in the future of Faxion Online if it goes ahead with a proposed deal to buy out the rest of UTV Software Communications' stock. Currently, Disney has a majority stake in the company -- 50.4% -- but this move would bring it up to a nice round 100%.

The Ignition Entertainment label would fall under this deal, which has already been struggling with numerous layoffs and studio closings. We recently reported that UTV Ignition had to cut a good portion of its programming, maintenance, and customer service staff as part of these problems.

Whether or not this deal will prove a boon or a hammer blow to Ignition remains to be seen. Disney has previously closed down developers Black Rock and Propaganda Games, although Mickey's parent company is looking to move in the direction of more social and casual gaming. We'll keep a close eye on this deal to see how it plays out.
Disney looking to buy out Faxion Online developer originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 10:00:00 EST.

When it comes to free-to-play games, we don't often see the licensing companies buying titles outright. Normally, we're prone to seeing licensing agreements until a game has launched or when two companies have a history of working together quite a lot. Nonetheless, today gamigo proved that it really believes in how much players are going to enjoy its upcoming space dogfighter, Black Prophecy, by buying all rights and trademarks related to the game from Reakktor Media.

The other interesting piece of news is that at the same time as the Black Prophecy acquisition, gamigo also opted to pick up nearly 20% of Reakktor Media. All remaining shares of Reakktor Media remain under the control of the company's CEO, Kirk Lenke, which effectively puts all development control moving forward between Reakktor and gamigo.

If you really don't care about corporate merges and buyouts, then there's still a nugget of news to be gleaned for you. In amongst all the happy congratulations and notes about how this will make things better and easier for the two companies was a note that we should "[look] forward to seeing Black Prophecy go live in the very near future." (Emphasis theirs.) Whether it will simply mark open beta or something more, we'll have to wait and see.

Gamigo buys Black Prophecy, buys into Reakktor Media originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST. GamesIndustry.biz recently reached out to Codemasters, publisher of the European version of Lord of the Rings Online and the upcoming Jumpgate Evolution, for their comment on a rumor that Warner Bros. may be getting ready to buy them out. The rumor was first seen at VG247 (warning: link contains colorful but entertaining language) and it claims that Warner has "completed due diligence and buyout discussions are ongoing". This prompted GI.biz to seek clarification from Codemasters.

Their reply? "We won't respond to that story. Everything is fine here." Ok, so sometimes 'no comment' does just mean 'no comment', but it certainly doesn't close the book on the whole rumor situation with any conviction. Warner Bros. didn't return GI.biz's calls (yet) so there's no confirmation to be had from them either. It looks like we might just have to wait and see if anything actually eventuates -- or for more insider leaks perhaps.
No comment from Codemasters on Warner Bros. buyout rumors originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST. The surprising news this morning that Infogrames, the parent company of Atari, would be purchasing Cryptic Studios prompted us to get in touch with Jack Emmert over at Cryptic Studios in order to shine a little more light on the current situation. Here's what he had to say:

Massively: How will the Atari acquisition change or affect the 2k Games publishing agreement for Champions Online?

Jack Emmert: I'm afraid I can't comment on this. I can only say that I enjoy working with 2k games; they're a great company and even better people.

Can you give us a bit of background on Cryptic's relationship with Atari? Where did the idea for this collaboration emerge?

This evolved after numerous discussions. John Needham, our CEO extraordinaire, had been doing the rounds to look for funding opportunities. We crossed paths with David Gardiner and Phil Harrison of Atari; all of us really hit it off. One thing led to another...and here were are!

This is obviously a very positive step for Cryptic. Can you speak to what kind of benefits you see in your new relationship with Atari?

Atari has a great pool of resources - PR, marketing, distribution, etc. Atari also has a number of terrific IP's that would make great MMO's. Mostly, this acquisition allows Cryptic to focus solely on the business of making great MMO's.

Is this going to alter the beta and release schedules for any Cryptic projects?

Not at all. We're still moving ahead with Champions - Q2 next year, and STO later in the year. Development priorities are the only thing that can shift those dates.
Jack Emmert weighs in on the Atari buyout announcement originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 16:30:00 EST. The website for industry rag Variety is reporting that before the idea of a copacetic merger of two gaming giants was pitched, Activision was interested in just buying Blizzard outright from the Vivendi folks. Bobby Kotick was very interested in Vivendi's crown jewel and the possible revenues from the sparkle inside: World of Warcraft.

The article notes how different that tone was than just a few years ago, when Vivendi tried to sell their games business off to pay down debt. At the time no-one was willing to bite, a state of affairs the company is probably now very grateful for. Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillaume will apparently be one of the individuals quoted in an upcoming story on the site about the merger, and offered up this pithy insight about the deal.

Originally, Activision wanted to buy Blizzard. "'One game, World of Warcraft,' bought Activision."
Activision tried to buy Blizzard before merging with Vivendi originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. Tonight we got a unique tip, from CEO of Sony Online Entertainment John Smedley. This tip came along with a small wave of similar tips, all discussing the supposed purchase of SOE by the Zapak Digital group.

The article claims that SOE has been 'on the block' for two weeks, and that the group plans to purchase the Sony subsidiary for the sum of $300 million. The article further claims this is an ongoing strategic move by Zapak:

The major expenses in the gaming industry is on content and marketing, and Zapak aims to reduce the cost of publishing a game by buying out those studios and relocating them to India. "This will reduce the cost drastically from $30 mn to $10mn, which will give us the advantage to channelise our funds towards marketing and other activities," the official said.

Says Mr. Smedley, in response to the article:

It's got a bunch of people inside SOE emailing me asking me what's going on. This story is 100% false. We aren't for sale and never have been. Nothing like this has ever been discussed with the Zapak guys. The truth is we were talking to them about distribution rights to one of our games. And we have no idea how this story got started.
