Ah <a href="http://www.play-earthrise.com"><em>Earthrise</em></a>, you keep dropping tiny breadcrumbs of game info for us each week. We hoard these little morsels and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise">keep them in a jar</a>, slowly trying to piece it all together. This week is no different and <em>Earthrise</em> developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/masthead-studios">Masthead Studios</a> addressed questions from the playerbase on a few different topics. <br />
<br />
The main thing they discussed is how the game's tutorial will allow players to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/character-creation-in-earthrise-an-open-system/#continued">experiment with skills</a>. In RP-terms, players in the tutorial will make use of "mnemonic adaptation kits" which imprint memories. The Masthead devs state, <em>"Simply put, it lets you test drive certain skills - such as using weapons, crafting, etc. - before you dedicate yourself to development of those skills."</em> Those kits, however, can't be used outside of the cloning facility and won't make their way into the game beyond the tutorial zone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/13/masthead-studios-addresses-player-questions-about-earthrise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Masthead Studios addresses player questions about Earthrise</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/13/masthead-studios-addresses-player-questions-about-earthrise/">Masthead Studios addresses player questions about Earthrise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 09:00:00 EST. When we cover the news surrounding the post-apocalyptic MMO <a href="http://www.play-earthrise.com"><em>Earthrise</em></a>, a question often asked in the comments is, <em>"When will it launch?"</em>. It's been a question we've been hard pressed to answer with any degree of certainty considering it's still in an early phase of testing, and the game was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/earthrise-interview-slots-launch-date-for-later-this-year/">originally slated for a late 2009 launch</a>. Now it seems we're looking at a Q2 2010 launch for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>, according to Klassa (Bulgarian newspaper) reporter Mihail Rangelov. Closed beta testing will take place in February and March of 2010, and the game's developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/masthead-studios">Masthead Studios</a> is expecting between 70-80,000 initial subscribers. <br />
<br />
In an article that's a follow-up to his <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> visit one year prior, Rangelov notes that the game's setting is very open -- there's a feeling of having a great deal of terrain and open space around you. Still, he notes, <em>"The game goes at almost 60-70 frames per second on the huge terrain for mass combats. Moreover, it is played on a two-year old computer."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/earthrise-launch-q2-2010-studio-visit-reveals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise launch Q2 2010, studio visit reveals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/earthrise-launch-q2-2010-studio-visit-reveals/">Earthrise launch Q2 2010, studio visit reveals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 19:00:00 EST. The game will take place on a sprawling island called Enterra, with regions and environments ranging from lush jungles to futuristic urban centers. As expected of a post-apocalyptic MMO, there will be areas of the game that are comprised of blasted out buildings and various gutted structures, but the island setting of Enterra will offer a wide variety of terrain for players to explore and exploit. <br /><br />Moll, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>'s community manager, explains in a recent blog post: <em>"As we developed Earthrise, we made sure that the world is tailored in such a way so it provides different game experiences - the whole island is divided almost equally between plains, hills and mountains."</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/earthrise-devs-on-how-terrain-will-impact-gameplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise devs on how terrain will impact gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/earthrise-devs-on-how-terrain-will-impact-gameplay/">Earthrise devs on how terrain will impact gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 16:00:00 EST. This tenth newsletter mentions how their current development focus is on the game's crafting system, which they've said will allow for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/earthrise-question-of-the-week-is-a-call-to-crafters/">a high degree of customization</a>, allowing skilled players to become well-known among their peers for their particular creations. There's also a fair amount of coverage of some of the various <em>Earthrise</em> community efforts, ranging from fansites to player-created art, as well as a media coverage recap. There's definitely a few things in there worth checking out if you're interested in keeping up with <em>Earthrise</em>. <br /><br />While Masthead Studios may not feel <em>quite</em> this way about the game, this writer feels that <em>Earthrise</em> has some of the makings of a terrestrial <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>: a sandbox setting; guild-level <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/territorial-control">world and resource control</a> in what are now called 'Concession grounds'; and hopefully with that, player politics. If they can develop <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> along these lines, we suspect it could prove to be popular with fans of both sci-fi and post-apocalyptic games.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/">Earthrise</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4547436"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/vehicle02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4547438"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/vehicle06.tints_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4547437"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/vehicle05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4072506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/vehicle2frame_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4072505"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/vehicle1frame_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/18/earthrise-newsletter-issue-x-updates-players-on-games-state-of/">Earthrise newsletter Issue X updates players on game's state of development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 17:00:00 EST. We've known that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> will have a mix of both online and offline character advancement. The <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> response to the latest Question of the Week regarding skills, via <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/moll"><em>Earthrise</em> community manager Moll</a>, explains their approach to progression. Moll writes: <em>"Skills improvement is one of the pinnacles of Earthrise's sandbox gameplay. Players in Earthrise will gain skill points by killing monsters and completing quests. Those skill points can be invested in abilities, which are used in combat. The abilities interface dialog is interactive with options to buy and combine abilities by using tactics." </em><br /><br />Beyond this system of combining abilities Moll also writes that players won't be limited in terms of their skill choices and that a player can choose any skills in the game, in addition to combining all types of abilities into tactics. Moll says, <em>"The skill advancement system is easy to learn and offers numerous possibilities for character customization, much more than many other games on the market." </em>You can find the Question of the Week and feedback from the <em>Earthrise</em> community <a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?topic=4551.0">on the game's official forums</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/earthrise-devs-shed-some-light-on-skill-advancement/">Earthrise devs shed some light on skill advancement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 02 Jun 2009 09:00:00 EST. The latest such interview we've come across is a brief one at German fan site <a href="http://earthrise.onlinewelten.com/">Earthrise HQ</a>, which spoke with Masthead Studios CEO Atanas Atanasov about a few aspects of the game. If you've been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise">reading up on <em>Earthrise</em></a>, the interview hits some of the topics you'd expect -- the basic concepts of the game, for instance -- but also but heads into some new areas. Atanasov mentions faction capital cities that are expanded upon over time, <em>"using meaningful events that progress not only their visual representation but their story and functionality as well." </em><br /><br />The interview also hits on the fact that <em>Earthrise</em> will have two reputation systems: Contribution and Reputation. Contribution, Atanasov says, is <em>"the policy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/09/an-early-look-at-the-lore-of-earthrise/">Continoma</a> to discern friend from foe by measuring each citizen's contribution to their system. The second system is Reputation. Numerous smaller organizations exist in Earthrise, each with its own agenda and plans. Players can do tasks for these organizations and grow in Reputation towards them. Organizations provide players with rare resources, monopolized designs that create new, different item combinations, as well as other rewards." </em><br /><br />For more from the Masthead Studios CEO on <em>Earthrise</em>, head on over to his <a href="http://earthrise.onlinewelten.com/articles,id670,0.html">interview with Earthrise HQ</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/">Earthrise</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4547436"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/vehicle02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4547438"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/vehicle06.tints_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4547437"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/vehicle05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4072506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/vehicle2frame_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/earthrise-gallery/#4072505"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/vehicle1frame_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/masthead-studios-ceo-explains-reputation-system-in-earthrise/">Masthead Studios CEO explains reputation system in Earthrise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 May 2009 19:00:00 EST. Fortunately the game's creators have been running a <a href="http://forums.play-earthrise.com/index.php?board=18.0">Question of the Week forum category</a>, explaining some of the game mechanics involved with playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a>.The latest QOTW deals with dodging in combat, something we've been wondering about, given that Masthead Studios previously stated <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/physics-engine-grounds-earthrise-players/">they don't want players hopping around incessantly</a> out on the battlefield. <br /><br />Jumping will of course be used to avoid damage or cross distances at a quicker pace but, if their original intentions hold true now, jumping and perhaps dodging will be tied in with abilities. <em>Earthrise</em> community manager Moll answers this question: <em>"Will attacks and skills that do damage from a distance have instant effect or will a target perhaps be able to see it coming and have a slim possibility to dodge it completely?"</em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/earthrise-developers-explain-dodge-game-mechanics-in-pvp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise developers explain dodge game mechanics in PvP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/earthrise-developers-explain-dodge-game-mechanics-in-pvp/">Earthrise developers explain dodge game mechanics in PvP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 09:00:00 EST. Massively had a chance to sit down with Masthead Studios CEO Atanas Atanasov at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2009">GDC 2009</a> for a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/29/gdc09-massively-previews-earthrise/">preview of <em>Earthrise</em></a> which gave us a taste of what to expect from the title, but we're always on the lookout for more info about the game. <br /><br />We've come across a short interview at <a href="http://mmorpg.qj.net">QJ.NET</a> with Atanasov that might be worth a read if you're excited about the dystopian MMO. He discusses some of the major game design decisions Masthead Studios made with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> in respect to character progression (both online and offline) as well as departing from a few of the tried-and-true systems found in other MMOs on the market. <a href="http://mmorpg.qj.net/Earthrise-The-QJ-NET-Interview/pg/49/aid/131414">Have a look at the <em>Earthrise</em> interview over at QJ.NET</a> for more on the sandbox elements of this first release from Masthead Studios.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/19/earthrise-interview-explains-masthead-studios-approach-to-sandbo/">Earthrise interview explains Masthead Studios approach to sandbox design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 19 May 2009 20:00:00 EST. How long will players have to loot fallen opponents (or allies)? <br /> <br /> Atanasov says, <span style="font-style: italic;">"There will be a time limit. Right now we're planning for 30 seconds, which means that once you die nobody can pick up your inventory for that first 30 seconds. So you have the time to choose whether or not you want your inventory back," </span>at a cost, of course. <br /> <br /> A key game mechanic that's central to <span style="font-style: italic;">Earthrise</span>'s combat is a player's "battle rating" which is a numerical ranking of how tough you are (as presently skilled/equipped) and conversely how tough your opposition is. Your own battle rating and that of your opponents determines the experience you can gain from defeating them, or how juicy a target you are to them. <br /> <br /> Your battle rating is determined by a few factors. The armor and weapons you equip and the abilities you've learned largely dictate battle rating. A target's battle rating will be visible to you and determines how much experience you'll get from taking down a mutant or other opponent. <br /> <br /> The battle rating system will also give players flexibility in how quickly they advance. For example, you may be very strong but if you want greater experience gains from taking on weaker opponents you can choose to use weaker gear to match. In effect, you lower your own battle rating but earn more rewards by facing a greater challenge. The battle rating system isn't just a system that determines individual gains, it will also carry over to groups. Atanasov says, <span style="font-style: italic;">"I would say it's very unique in the MMO field. Nobody has tried it so far. I hope it will work well and will bring some new ideas to the future of MMO games."</span><strong><br /></strong><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/29/gdc09-massively-previews-earthrise-page-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC09: Massively previews Earthrise page 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/29/gdc09-massively-previews-earthrise-page-2/">GDC09: Massively previews Earthrise page 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 29 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. As with their previous newsletters, Issue IX points out where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> has been discussed in the gaming press over the past few weeks, and shows off some of the game's concept art. This month, <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com/">Masthead Studios</a> is showing off concepts for the mutated Nathura zone.<br /><br />In addition, the developers write about what they love about <em>Earthrise</em> and working on the title -- ranging from the game's epic scale to the extensive combat system. Issue IX also expands upon the game's lore, with the struggle between the factions of Noir and Continoma, a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/earthrise-lore-features-clash-between-utopian-idealism-and-anarc/">clash between utopian idealism and anarchy</a>. The latest piece that's caught our eye is an interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/atanas-atanasov">Masthead Studios CEO Atanas Atanasov</a> conducted by <a href="http://reviewstash.com/profile.php?id=2">ReviewStash's Daniel Levy</a>. The interview ranges across several topics of interest for potential <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> players, but perhaps what's of most interest are Atanasov's comments on combat game mechanics and crafting. <br /><br />Aiming in <em>Earthrise</em>'s combat will be done as with standard shooters, but the weapons available to characters will allow a player to keep a bead on their target. On <span style="font-style: italic;">Earthrise</span>'s crafting system, Atanasov says that players will be <em>"capable of infusing Designs into items -- special bonuses and enhancements, or totally separate effects that allow the crafter to customize an item to the needs of his or her customers."</em> Certain crafters may well become influential figures in <em>Earthrise</em>, Atanasov says, known for coming up with powerful item builds.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/earthrise-interview-explains-games-crafting-and-sandbox-element/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise interview explains game's crafting and sandbox elements</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/22/earthrise-interview-explains-games-crafting-and-sandbox-element/">Earthrise interview explains game's crafting and sandbox elements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 22 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. Will it be a breath of fresh air into an industry overwhelmingly dominated by fantasy titles? It's still far too soon to say, but the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> developers, <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a>, have been doing a good job of communicating what their vision for the game is, both in terms of building up a community (pre-beta no less) and actively talking about the title with the gaming press. <br /><br />The latest bits of info about <em>Earthrise</em> come to us through a <a href="http://www.stratics.com">Stratics</a> interview with Lead Game Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/apostol-apostolov">Apostol Apostolov</a>. He starts off by succinctly explaining the lore behind the game, but his talk with Stratics also touches upon what he sees as the advantages of using a skill-based advancement system, which tips its hat to <a href="http://www.uoherald.com/news/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>. Apostolov also discusses <em>Earthrise</em>'s economy, with hints about rewards tied to the offline profession(s) a player chooses. On the subject of the players, <em>Earthrise</em> will have a completely player-run market which could be a boon to crafters.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/04/earthrise-lead-designer-on-player-driven-economy-and-crafting-un/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise lead designer on player-driven economy and crafting unique items</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/04/earthrise-lead-designer-on-player-driven-economy-and-crafting-un/">Earthrise lead designer on player-driven economy and crafting unique items</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 11:00:00 EST. Beyond the more standard sci-fi MMOs we've reported on in the past, one that's caught our attention at Massively is the upcoming post-apocalyptic title, <a href="http://www.play-earthrise.com"><em>Earthrise</em></a>. It seems that beta testing is going to begin "in autumn", as confirmed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/masthead-studios"><em>Masthead Studios</em></a> CEO Atanas Atanasov in an interview with Polish MMO-centric gaming site The Art of MMO. <br /><br />While the interview brought to light some interesting revelations about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> as a sandbox MMO, it also nailed down some details such as the system requirements to run the title: minimum requirements are 2 GHz CPU, 1024 MB RAM and 256 MB VRAM video card supporting shader model v3.0, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/atanas-atanasov">Atanasov</a>. But the interview also gives confirmations about guild-based PvP (which Atanasov refers to as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-vs-guild">'Guild-vs-Guild'</a> or 'GvG'), character advancement, and the roleplaying opportunities he sees being available to players in the <em>Earthrise</em> sandbox. Check out the entire <a href="http://mmozin.pl/zin/numery/EZinNr1/earthriseinterview.html">English version of the interview</a> over at The Art of MMO for more on this title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/masthead-studios-ceo-discusses-earthrises-sandbox-philosophy/">Masthead Studios CEO discusses Earthrise's sandbox philosophy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 20:00:00 EST. In making the game a departure from the fantasy genre, the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise">Earthrise</a></em> creators at <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> have been fleshing out the game's lore and relaying it to potential fans <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/17/earthrise-newsletter-updates-fans-on-titles-progress/">through its own newsletters</a> and some media exclusives, at <a href="http://rpgvault.ign.com/">IGN's RPG Vault</a> in particular. <br /><br />IGN continues its series of <em>Earthrise</em> previews, focusing on the lore of the post-apocalyptic setting. That is to say the old world is dead, wiped out in World War III. Those who weren't part of the Continoma-selected elite are either ash or reduced to slavering mutants prowling Enterra in search of their next meal. The previous piece titled <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/09/an-early-look-at-the-lore-of-earthrise/">Continoma: The Beginning</a></em> focused on the corporate entity that rose to power and came to rule what was left of the earth following the near-annihilation of human society. IGN now looks at what happened after the burn in <em>"Continoma: The Rebirth."</em> <a href="http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/899/899781p1.html">Check out their piece</a> for the full story on the pioneers of <em>Earthrise</em> who work to rebuild society to utopian standards, and the anarchists who resist the order of this new establishment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/01/earthrise-lore-features-clash-between-utopian-idealism-and-anarc/">Earthrise lore features clash between utopian idealism and anarchy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 20:00:00 EST. Although <a href="http://www.mastheadstudios.com">Masthead Studios</a> is a comparative newcomer to the MMO industry, the company has been doing a good job of raising awareness of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise"><em>Earthrise</em></a> through the press, while fostering an active community which is eagerly awaiting beta. <br /><br />Their latest media coverage comes to us through Massimo Villa's <a href="http://www.alteregonline.it/index.php/articoli/16/5502-effetto-earthrise.html#eng ">interview with <em>Earthrise's</em> Kamen Atanasov,</a> Sound Effects Designer for the title. The interview touches on how Atanasov progressed from being a freelance sound designer to working on the audio backdrop of <em>Earthrise</em>. If you're curious about the development of this title, check out this Q&amp;A with Kamen Atanasov. <br /><br />[Thanks, Nolvadex.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/earthrise-sound-effects-designer-discusses-influences-and-approa/">Earthrise sound effects designer discusses influences and approach</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Aug 2008 19:00:00 EST. We've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/physics-engine-grounds-earthrise-players/">read about the game itself</a> in recent months, but until now little has been known about the people behind the scenes who are working to make <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/earthrise">Earthrise</a></em> a reality. The newsletter features an introduction to the members of the <em>Earthrise</em> development team at Masthead Studios in the form of a short Q&amp;A for each developer. <br /><br />Each of the devs discusses what brought them to work on the project, their influences, and what they do at Masthead Studios to further the creation of <em>Earthrise.</em> There's also <a href="http://www.play-earthrise.com/newsletter/002/scr_01.jpg">screenshots of a new area</a> on Enterra called <a href="http://www.play-earthrise.com/newsletter/002/scr_02.jpg">The Nest</a> and a hyperlinked recap of <em>Earthrise's</em> media coverage in the last month. But the real focus of the <em>Earthrise</em> newsletters is on the community, and a number of issues are showcased in the latest iteration.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/earthrise-newsletter-introduces-dev-team-and-their-influences/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthrise newsletter introduces dev team and their influences</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/earthrise-newsletter-introduces-dev-team-and-their-influences/">Earthrise newsletter introduces dev team and their influences</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST.
