It's Christmas Eve, and most everyone is on some sort of holiday break. The interesting thing about holiday "break" is that it's often not so much a break as it is a different kind of hustle and bustle than the usual one. <br />
<br />
Still, it's supposed to involve at least a little bit of downtime, and we MMO fans look forward to indulging with some extra time in our favorite games. While it's hard to find time to spend hours raiding, the design of <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons and Dragons Online</em></a> allows players to take a half-hour here and there to relax and play. The downside of this is that there's a lot of content, and it's easy to wind up staring at the game thinking "I have no idea what I want to do." A few suggestions can usually get the ball rolllng, so follow along after the jump for some ideas on how to make the most of your <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>DDO</em></a> downtime!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/24/exploring-eberron-playtime-over-the-holidays/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exploring Eberron: Playtime over the holidays</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/24/exploring-eberron-playtime-over-the-holidays/">Exploring Eberron: Playtime over the holidays</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 18:00:00 EST. <p>I've been playing <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com/" mce_href="http://www.ageofconan.com/" target="_blank"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> a fair amount over the last week, trying to figure out if I like it well enough to continue paying for it on a monthly basis after my free month expires. The problem is that it's going to be my second MMOG -- the one I play when I'm not busy farming or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/player-vs-everything-i-look-hot-in-leather/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/player-vs-everything-i-look-hot-in-leather/" target="_blank">raiding with my guild</a> on <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/" mce_href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/" target="_blank">World of Warcraft</a>.</em> Even for someone who writes about videogames professionally, when you start stacking up multiple subscriptions, things get pricey pretty fast. Usually, I keep two subs active at a time and write about what I'm playing.</p>
<p>Anyway, I've been trying to make this decision and I have a problem: I hop classes a lot. When you're talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/player-vs-everything-age-of-conans-250-hours/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/player-vs-everything-age-of-conans-250-hours/" target="_blank">a 250 hour investment</a>, you want to make sure that you pick a class you enjoy playing. To figure out what you enjoy playing, you really just have to try the classes out -- especially when the classes are as unique as the ones in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan/" target="_blank"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>. I've leveled two characters to the high teens in Tortage, and several more to the 10ish range. What I've decided, after doing all of this poking around with the classes, is that <em>AoC's</em> first 20 levels are about as frustrating as they can be once the initial sheen of "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/26/six-reasons-to-be-excited-about-age-of-conan/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/26/six-reasons-to-be-excited-about-age-of-conan/" target="_blank">new game wonder</a>" wears off. If you didn't notice it your first time through, just wait until you make your first alt.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/player-vs-everything-age-of-conans-newbie-blues/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Player vs. Everything: Age of Conan's newbie blues</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/player-vs-everything-age-of-conans-newbie-blues/">Player vs. Everything: Age of Conan's newbie blues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 May 2008 15:30:00 EST. <div align="center"><a href="http://www.ffinsider.net/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" title="You've officially maxed yourself out. Now what?" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/edgescreen.png" /></a><br /></div>
<p>Congratulations! You've hit level 70 (or whatever max level is in your favorite game), and you're officially a badass. For many players, this is a goal they've been striving towards for months -- even years in some cases. The feeling of having that first max level character is immensely invigorating. It's like putting the finishing touches on <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://www.news.com/Macs-new-OS-Seven-years-in-the-making/2009-1040_3-254470.html" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/interplay-to-rez-fallout-mmo-project-looking-for-funds/">a long-term project</a> or getting to the last page of <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_peace" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_peace">a monstrous novel</a>. What an accomplishment! However, after basking in the glow of your newly maxed out character for a few days, you quickly realize you have a small problem: What do you do with yourself now?</p>
<p>The answer to that question is going to depend heavily on what game you play. For most people, it's going to be <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/arena/index.xml" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/the-importance-of-collision-detection-in-pvp/">PvP</a>, <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/raiding/" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/beginners-guide-to-wow-raiding/">raiding</a>, or a nice mix of both. You'll probably continue collecting gear for your character or working on your skills. Depending on the game, you might be able to work on some sort of <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://www.planeteq.com/reference/alternate_advancement/index.shtml" href="http://www.planeteq.com/reference/alternate_advancement/index.shtml">alternate advancement</a> or <a target="_blank" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/70-new-badges-in-issue-11/">achievement system</a> for your character -- maybe even hunt down some <a target="_blank" mce_href="http://lotro.turbine.com/article/286" href="http://lotro.turbine.com/article/286">unique titles</a>. All of this is pretty standard fare for endgame content. Sooner or later, you'll probably get a little bored of it. Don't fret, though! There's a whole host of other interesting things you can do to keep yourself entertained at maximum level that go beyond the planned content. Read on for a few suggestions.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/player-vs-everything-maxed-out-and-bored/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Player vs. Everything: Maxed out and bored</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/player-vs-everything-maxed-out-and-bored/">Player vs. Everything: Maxed out and bored</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 11:30:00 EST. <div align="center"><a target="_blank" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" title="It's hard to say goodbye to your first game. Most players won't." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/orgrimmargoinghomeagain.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /></div>
<p align="left">I always think it's interesting when I hear developers talk about how <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a> </em>opened up the MMOG market for new entrants. We have all these new and exciting games coming out: <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Age-of-Conan/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Age-of-Conan/" target="_blank">Age of Conan</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/" target="_blank">Warhammer Online</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/chronicles-of-spellborn/" mce_href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/chronicles-of-spellborn/" target="_blank">The Chronicles of Spellborn</a></em>, and plenty more. However, the overwhelming response that I get from <em>WoW</em> players when I talk about these games is a blank stare and something along the lines of, "Okay, that sounds all right... but why would I ever want to leave <em>WoW</em>?" I think that developers tend to underestimate how attached people get to their MMOG of choice. There are now over 10 million <em>World of Warcraft</em> players. The question is, do they even <em>want</em> something different?</p>
<p>I've read a number of bloggers in the past few months and talked to a number of players who claim that they're only playing <em>WoW </em>right now because "it's the best thing out there." They're yearning for something else. Not something totally <em>different</em>, mind you, since they obviously have a blast in Azeroth. But something fresh enough to be new and exciting without bastardizing the game style they know and love. However, I've noticed something interesting. This breed of player tends to overwhelmingly be comprised of people for whom <em>World of Warcraft</em> was <em>not</em> their first MMOG. Otherwise, people just want <em>WoW</em> to put more content in and are willing to make do with what they have until then. I think there's an intriguing bit of psychology there that's worth examining.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/player-vs-everything-when-will-the-players-leave-wow/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Player vs. Everything: When will the players leave WoW?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/player-vs-everything-when-will-the-players-leave-wow/">Player vs. Everything: When will the players leave WoW?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 11:00:00 EST.
