There's still nothing much happening in <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> or <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> at the moment. Well, OK, there's plenty <em>happening</em>, just not a great deal of news to discuss. I imagine that won't last very long, especially with the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> poll having ended on Friday, but right now seems like the perfect time to reflect on the past. And that inevitably leads me back to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>, to my favorite expansion and the one that feels most vibrant to a North American player.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/ahturhgan/index.html"><em>Treasures of Aht Urhgan</em></a> wasn't the only expansion that was released here, naturally, but it was unique in the game's lifespan. <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/intro/extension.html?pageID=extension"><em>Rise of the Zilaart</em></a> came with the game from the initial NA launch, <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/promathia/index.html"><em>Chains of Promathia</em></a> produced very divided opinions (which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/05/the-mog-log-the-trial-of-chains-of-promathia-part-one/">several</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/12/the-mog-log-the-trial-of-chains-of-promathia-part-2/">columns</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/03/the-mog-log-the-verdict-on-chains-of-promathia/">covered</a>, if you missed it), and <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/altana/index.html"><em>Wings of the Goddess</em></a> is really just a slight funhouse reflection of Vana'diel proper. But Aht Urghan was new, vibrant, and the sort of expansion you could really sink your teeth into. It was, I'd say, the best one the series had.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/15/the-mog-log-i-left-my-heart-in-whitegate/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: I left my heart in Whitegate</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/15/the-mog-log-i-left-my-heart-in-whitegate/">The Mog Log: I left my heart in Whitegate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. If there were an award for the most controversial game on Massively, that award would probably have to go to <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>. It's a game with a very different approach to many of the elements that are considered de rigueur for MMOs, which has produced a great deal of affection from some players, a great deal of enmity from others, and a flamewar that burgeons in nearly any thread about even the most innocuous news.<br />
<br />
I had a chance to sit down at <a href="http://www.newyorkcomiccon.com/">New York Comic Con</a> with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sage-Sundi/">Sage Sundi</a>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv">FFXIV's</a></em> global online producer, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Yasu-Kurosawa/">Yasu Kurosawa</a>, <em>FFXIV's</em> North American online producer. It was certainly an interesting experience to chat with two of the people responsible in no small part for one of my personal favorite games, but both gentlemen were very polite to discuss the game, its worldwide community, and what lessons had been learned already from launch.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-our-interview-with-ffxivs-sage-sundi-and-yasu-kurosa/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NYCC 2010: Our interview with FFXIV's Sage Sundi and Yasu Kurosawa</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/nycc-2010-our-interview-with-ffxivs-sage-sundi-and-yasu-kurosa/">NYCC 2010: Our interview with FFXIV's Sage Sundi and Yasu Kurosawa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. Due out next week, <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/September-version-update/">September version update</a> is going to increase the level cap once again, giving jobs access to a plethora of new abilities. But the development team isn't stopping there. Several existing job abilities <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/5811/detail.html">will also be seeing improvements and refinements</a>, with a number of the upgrades targeting the many pet classes in the game. Even the smallest upgrades are notable improvements to quality of life, such as blue magic remaining set when the job is changed out as a main job, rather than forcing players to re-select their abilities.<br />
<br />
Summoners can look forward to more effective Blood Pacts and reduced sustain costs past level 76, while beastmasters gain additional jug pets, as well as changes to pet food to tier the existing types and make them more effective. Dragoons will receive a wyvern that levels up in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Abyssea/">Abyssea</a>; puppetmasters gain a new way to call their automaton and a faster recharge for the summon; and several other class abilities see their negatives removed and positives enhanced. Nearly every player will want to take a look at <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/5811/detail.html">the full list of changes</a>, which should help ensure that even with <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> on approach, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> will remain engaging.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/04/further-job-adjustments-en-route-for-final-fantasy-xi/">Further job adjustments en route for Final Fantasy XI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 04 Sep 2010 20:00:00 EST. More information pours in regarding the upcoming <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.playonline.com">Final Fantasy XI</a> July <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/july-version-update">version update</a>, and the news is all very positive. No nerfs are hiding on the horizon for the game -- instead <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/4692/detail.html">it's just clear sailing</a> with improvements to combat skill progression, circle protection spells, and blue magic.<br /><br />All players will be happy to see Square-Enix has noted that <a href="http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Combat_Skill">combat and magic skills</a> are suffering while players level quicker via the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/starting-out-in-vanadiel-the-fields-of-valor/">Fields of Valor quests</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/why-you-should-be-playing-final-fantasy-xi-level-sync/">level sync</a>. Because players are spending less time in each level, their skills in combat and magic are simply not advancing fast enough. To combat this, the rate of advancement for skill in weapons and magic has been boosted for the low and mid levels of the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/09/more-adjustments-to-final-fantasy-xi-jobs-with-the-next-version/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>More adjustments to Final Fantasy XI jobs with the next version update</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/09/more-adjustments-to-final-fantasy-xi-jobs-with-the-next-version/">More adjustments to Final Fantasy XI jobs with the next version update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.square-enix.com/">Square-Enix</a> <a href="http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/3551/detail.html">announced</a> that the September update to <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> will add the relic gear sets for the Blue Mage, Corsair, and Puppetmaster jobs. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xi"><em>FFXI</em></a> team considered adding new content that would lead to the gear. However, the team finally decided to do it the old way. That means Blue Mages, Corsairs, and Puppetmasters will be working Dynamis and Limbus like everyone else.<br /><br />Drop rates and entry item costs for those two areas have been altered to make everything nice and smooth for all the folks who will be working at acquiring this new gear. Yeah, we know that's vague! But <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square-Enix</a> didn't say anything specific about the drop rate changes.<br /><br />It did, on the other hand, specify that the Timeless Hourglass entry item will drop in cost from 1,000,000 gil to 500,00, and the Cosmo-Cleanse will drop from 30,000 to 15,000.
