MMO players eagerly awaiting a taste of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/black-desert/"><em>Black Desert Online</em></a> will be waiting just a bit longer than expected; the closed beta phase has been delayed from sometime this summer to sometime this fall. Apparently, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pearl-abyss">Pearl Abyss</a> wanted a little bit of extra time to add some polish and shine to the beta, thus completely defying the point of having a beta in the first place.<br />
<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></em> formally launches in just two days, but it appears as though the folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios/">Cryptic</a> aren't quite done adding features to the game. The company has just announced that an entirely new profession, alchemy, will go live at the same time as the game's official launch. This brings the total number of professions in <em>Neverwinter </em>up to six.<br />
<br />
Alchemy works in the way you might expect: You use resources gathered from the environment to make potions that enhance your abilities or restore your health. There are also unstable concoctions that provide random <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/buff/">buff</a> or debuff effects depending on your luck. Alchemists will be able to create dyes that can be used for color customization.<br />

With a name meaning the center, you'd expect <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/">City of Steam's</a></em> Nexus to be a happening place even in beta, right? That means plenty of events for folks to get in on. Well, it just so happens that there are two general events already in game and a third on the way, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> gives players the lowdown on how to get in on the action in the <a href="http://cos.r2games.com/news/view/?id=2430">latest dev journal</a>.<br />
<br />
Unlike temporary in-game events, events in <em>CoS</em> are permanent instances you queue for. Of course, victory promises reward. Of the two current events, the Arena is all about survival of the soloist as waves of mobs crash into you whereas Tesla Defense is a five-man tower defense. When patch 1.3 releases, the PvP-based Siege of the Spire will join the event lineup as a MOBA-inspired arena that includes mobs, turrets, and team bases. Players can join the regular events as well as daily and weekly events with larger rewards. If your primary complaint about MOBAs is that they move too quickly, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arena-of-heroes/"><em>Arena of Heroes</em></a> might be something that lands a bit more in your comfort zone. Developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sneaky-games/">Sneaky Games</a>, <em>Arena of Heroes</em> is a turn-based, tactical MOBA that focuses more on strategy than on twitch-clicking hard skills.<br />
<br />
Essentially, you and another player square off in an arena (duh), each controlling a team of four heroes in a battle for supremacy. It's your basic MOBA fare, but with a smaller battle zone and a slower, more deliberate pace. You and your opponent receive two minutes each to make your moves, or you can try the game's asynchronous mode and play several games simultaneously, with up to two days being allotted for turns.<br />

<em>Arena of Heroes</em> has officially shifted into open beta, so you're free to check it out at your leisure. Although sharing sound, music, and video from the <em><a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/">Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn</a></em> beta is still prohibited, testers' thoughts and screenshots from phase three <a href="http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/62123-Nda-partially-lifted?p=1000125#post1000125">are now allowed</a>. Taking advantage of that partial NDA lift, one creative beta participant has put together a montage of stills in video form to show off the upcoming reboot of the game. Wondering if you can glean what's going on from the screenshots alone? Don't worry -- he also added commentary to explain each shot.<br />
<br />
The nearly 33-minute montage includes character creation (<em>all</em> races have two genders to select from), the public quests (Fates), menus and the UI, combat, and a look at the updated graphics. Get a glimpse of the game for yourself in the video after the break.<br />

The third phase of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em>'s beta has started, so I don't see why you're still here.<br />

What? All right, there's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/11/world-of-warplanes-soaring-to-open-beta-on-july-2/">the open beta date</a> for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warplanes/">World of Warplanes</a>, </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/11/archeage-beta-signups-are-live/">English beta signups</a> for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ArcheAge/">ArcheAge</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/e3-2013-dayz-shows-off-its-standalone-gameplay/">a look at the standalone client</a> for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/DayZ/">DayZ</a></em>, and the start of closed beta for <a href="http://soldierfront2.aeriagames.com/"><em>Soldier Front 2</em></a>. I guess all of that stuff happened this week. And I guess <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/the-end-of-beta-days-invasion-is-coming-to-neverwinter/">running an event</a> before it <em>really</em> launches on the 20th. Oh, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a> was this week, so of course there was a lot of talk about games that are currently in beta or are heading into open beta in the near future. Plus, we probably still have our full list of betas just past the cut, because that's here most weeks and it's kind of silly to remove it.<br />

Last January, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/pathfinder-online/"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a> sneaked past its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> funding goal of a million real-life dollars at what was effectively the last minute. And now, five months after that success, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goblinworks/">Goblinworks</a> is ready to outline what it is that early backers actually purchased.<br />
<br />
In a lengthy and detailed blog post, Goblinworks' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ryan-Dancey/">Ryan Dancey</a> explained what the GW team considers to be <em>Pathfinder Online's</em> "minimum viable product." He also explained that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/early-access/">early enrollment</a> users will first gain access to what is effectively a barebones version of the game, with the focus from the team being on building a strong foundation for the content to come. Development will continue in phases from there.<br />
<br />
Most important for backers is the announcement of a timeline; early enrollment for <em>Pathfinder Online</em> is currently set for the third quarter of 2014 and is expected to run for around 18 months. With that schedule, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/pathfinder-online-never-closes-a-door-without-opening-a-pvp-wind/">unrestricted territorial warfare</a> would launch in the first quarter of 2016. Goblinworks is billing the long development pipeline as an opportunity for players to get in on the ground floor and witness MMO development from the inside out.<br />

Well folks, it was an epic battle. The communities of <a href="http://www.firefallthegame.com/"><em>Firefall </em></a>and <a href="http://www.gamersfirst.com/fallenearth/"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a> rolled out in force to support their favorite game in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/05/choose-my-adventure-put-me-in-coach/">last week's Choose My Adventure poll</a>, and the contest came right down to the wire with thousands of votes pouring in from both sides. Most impressively, despite the efforts of a few bad-apple commenters and forum trolls, it was a war fought with courtesy and genuine respect for the passions of the competing community. Well done.<br />

Seems we have this acceptable word count thing, though, so let's see. <em>ArcheAge</em> is a fantasy sandpark that's been in development for nearly six years by Korea's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XLGAMES</a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lineage"><em>Lineage</em></a> creator <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jake-song">Jake Song</a> is the brains behind the game, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion">Trion Worlds</a> is publishing the title for the western market.<br />

Back in the golden days of video games, there was no such thing as a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soft-launch/">soft launch</a>. Nintendo didn't send out test copies of <em>Super Mario World</em> to special "backers," and Sega didn't ship half-finished Sonic games with promises of further content updates. Games, for the most part, were played only after they were finished, printed, packaged, and shipped. Even on PC, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/closed-beta-testing/">beta testing</a> was more of an earned honor exclusive to players that showed dedication to a title and its community.<br />
<br />
Here in these modern times of Internets and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/always-online/">always-ons</a>, however, things are different. It would seem as though developers need only make enough game content to shoot a reasonably convincing trailer before the publishing team can begin collecting money by slapping a "BETA" sticker on the webpage and offering fans early access.<br />
<br />
Over the last few years soft launches have become increasingly common -- especially for creators of online games. Whenever I try to summarize what it is I find so special about <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>, I find myself at a loss. It's not just the game mechanics, it's not just the setting, and it's not just a history of roleplaying that's stretched for the entirety of the game's history. So trying to summarize the first two beta phases is going to be difficult.<br />
<br />
I've hit all of the major points of the beta already, both the points of divergence and the points of similarity from my big tour back in February. But there are little dribs and drabs here and there that I haven't yet touched upon, things that I feel are relevant to the beta test of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> even if they don't fit into an individual column.<br />

So this is the conclusion. If you've been waiting for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Marvel-Heroes/">Marvel Heroes</a></em> or <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Arcane-Saga/">Arcane Saga</a></em> to launch, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/marvel-heroes-launch-day-roundup/">the wait is over</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/06/arcane-saga-launches-with-steam-bonus-packs/">for both</a>. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></em> also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/06/neverwinter-officially-goes-live-on-june-20/">announced its official launch date</a>, if a game can really launch from an open beta with no character wipes and a functional cash shop. (A glance at the past several weeks makes our views on that clear.)<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the rest of the game world buckles down for E3 next week, which promises to have goodies for several MMOs and points related. Aside from pre-convention hoopla, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warplanes/">World of Warplanes</a></em> has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/world-of-warplanes-open-beta-detailed/">detailed its open beta</a>, offering players treats for shooting down a lot of enemy fighters, and we were reminded that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest-Next/">EverQuest Next</a></em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/06/everquest-next-teaser-photo-posted/">still a thing that will happen</a>.<br />

Finding the sweet spot in an MMO that applies to both casual and hardcore players might be the holy grail of the industry, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine</a> is convinced that it can deliver with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar"><em>WildStar</em></a> -- and do so in a way that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> no longer can.<br />

Game Design Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/stephan-frost">Stephan Frost</a> was bold <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/wildstar-dev-we-can-fill-the-world-of-warcraft-void/0116800">in his statements to MCV</a>, saying that <em>WildStar </em>will be a true success story. "We're making something that's different," he said. "We're coming out at a time when <em>WoW </em>is losing subscribers, and we can fill the void for people who want an MMO that's deep, hardcore but also accessible to people. We've found through betas and trade shows that MMO players understand our game. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/HEX/">HEX: Shards of Fate</a> </em>is a trading card game and MMO hybrid created by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptozoic/">Cryptozoic</a>, the studio behind the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wow-tcg/"><em>World of Warcraft Trading Card Game</em></a>. If that sounds like a thing you would like to play, you're not alone: <em>HEX'</em>s Kickstarter campaign just coasted to success on the pledges of over 17,750 backers, raising over $2,277,000 and obliterating the team's original goal of $300,000. (And those numbers are still rising!)<br />
<br />
Thanks to <em>HEX's </em>massive cash haul, Cryptozoic will be able to add 17 of its 18 stretch goals, including a <em>HEX</em>-themed novel from a "premiere fantasy writer," tablet support, a motion comics game intro, playback support, more particle effects for cards, 10 extra dungeons, and five additional game boards.<br />
<br />
Cryptozoic is continuing to accept pledges through its official website -- there are 17 backer tiers available promising access to the game's beta and the usual special backer-type items.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-repopulation/"><em>The Repopulation</em></a> transitioned into its second alpha test last month, and the team <a href="http://www.therepopulation.com/index.php/news/105-end-of-may-2013-update">has a quite detailed report</a> about all of the tweaks and features that it added to the game during that period. While there's a lot of everything in the patch notes, Rogues got a big piece of the attention pie.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/above-and-beyond-technologies">Above and Beyond Technologies</a> reported that it improved the quality of life for Rogue characters through a number of changes. The thievery mechanic got an upgrade, pick-pocketing got several missions, and containers got stubbornly locked. As an aside, there are six stealthed Rogues in the above picture. See if you can spot them!<br />
<br />

With E3 on the horizon, it's been a quiet week in the beta space as companies prepare for that battlefield. It's not been entirely silent, however; <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Dragon-s-Prophet/">Dragon's Prophet</a></em> took the opportunity to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/31/story-trailers-spotlight-two-dragons-prophet-eu-zones/">enter open beta in both the EU and the US</a>. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Marvel-Heroes/">Marvel Heroes</a></em> also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/30/marvel-heroes-early-access-is-live-gazillion-looking-into-com/">kicked off its early access</a>, although the general launch is not scheduled until next week.<br />
<br />
Otherwise, the quiet hum you hear is the buildup to E3, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Snail-Games/">Snail Games</a> promising <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/29/snail-games-to-show-off-black-gold-age-of-wushu-expansion-at-e3/">big stuff on the horizon</a>. We also got <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/28/massivelys-pre-e3-elder-scrolls-online-preview/">a pre-convention look</a> at <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online/">The Elder Scrolls Online</a></em>, if that's what you're looking forward to seeing on the show floor. Some folks may wonder whether the upcoming superhero title <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/infinite-crisis/">Infinite Crisis</a></em> can make it in the big leagues of MOBA gaming, but it is already assured a place in the majors. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/major-league-gaming/">Major League Gaming</a> has announced a partnership with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine's</a> DC Comic-based game, one that will kick off at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3</a> with a live competition between two top teams. Fans wanting to check out the action can stop by the WB Games booth (South Hall 1637) beginning at 3 p.m. EDT (12 p.m. PDT) on Tuesday, June 11th, or watch it livestreamed on <a href="http://www.majorleaguegaming.com">MLG's</a> and <em>Infinite Crisis'</em> official sites.<br />

This collaboration will introduce <em>Infinite Crisis</em> to the e-sports community and ultimately lead to <em>Infinite Crisis'</em> inclusion at MLG Pro Circuit competitions. The game's executive producer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeffrey-steefel/">Jeffrey Steefel</a>, is quoted as saying, "We look forward to working closely with MLG to introduce players to the DC Multiverse and building a world-class gaming community."<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/snail-games">Snail Games</a> has a busy lineup in store for next month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3</a>. The studio will use the expo for several reveals, including a steampunk MMO, a dance-off MMO, and an expansion for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-wushu"><em>Age of Wushu</em></a>.<br />
<br />
The steampunk title is <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/black-gold-online/">Black Gold</a></em>, which is set in a fantasy universe where industrial technology and magic are at war (yes, it has giant mechs vs. dragons). It will have six races and six classes, although the classes will also have subclasses to allow for interesting combinations. <em>Black Gold </em>is set <a href="http://snailgamesusa.com/2013/05/black-gold-chinese-beta/">to begin closed beta testing tomorrow</a> in China and Taiwan.<br />
<br />
<em>Age of Wushu: Legends of Mount Hua</em> promises to deliver new content starting in July, although Snail Games has yet to go into specifics as to what that content might be. The dance MMO is called <em>Music Soul</em> and features nine game modes that pit boogieing players against each other.<br />

Tomorrow (or tonight, depending on your point of view) is patch day for free-to-play, browser-based title <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a>. Starting at 2 a.m. EDT, the game will be taken offline for four to six hours while <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist/">Mechanist Games</a> pushes live patch 1.2: <em>The Vault Unsealed</em>.<br />

This new patch adds quite a bit of content to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/city-of-steam-opens-beta-doors-at-10-pm-tonight/">still-in-development</a> <em>City of Steam</em>, including new quests, the return of the Riven and Draug as playable races, the addition of a new content hub by the name of The Vault and a brand-new Wilderness level known as The Broken Stair. The level cap has also been raised up to 32, and PvP enthusiasts will find a new map and new tournament event in which to slay their fellow players.<br />

Massively was recently invited to meet with Cory Jones, president and chief creative officer of <a href="http://www.cryptozoic.com/">Cryptozoic</a>, to get some greater insight into <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/HEX/">HEX</a></em>, the studio's upcoming MMOTCG -- that is, massively multiplayer trading card game.<br />
<br />
At first, I had a difficult time associating a "massively multiplayer" aspect with a trading card game. My two-decade-old memories of very briefly playing <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> simply wouldn't let me get past my initial assumption about the head-to-head nature of these types of games. Even the online version of <em>Magic</em> used essentially the same structure as the offline version, with digital representations of Magic cards and an online challenge ladder.<br />
<br />

<div>While the last superhero to join the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/infinite-crisis/"><em>Infinite Crisis</em></a> lineup was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/shazam-gives-infinite-crisis-lineup-a-jolt/">mystically imbued</a>, the newest member is a mix of man and machine. Today <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> announced the addition of Cyborg to the roster of champions as well as released new art for the Green Lantern.<br />
<br />
Like you'd expect a man with an energy cannon for an arm, Cyborg is a ranged fighter, doling out powerful blasts while dodging direct confrontation with melee. His various skills include Cybernetic Targeting, Cascade, and Plasma Cannon. Charged Burst is an AoE attack and Tracer Shot marks opponents and adds a debuff that can be triggered for additional effects by his other skills.<br />

The latest news out of <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com"><em>WildStar</em></a>'s new previews isn't going to quiet people who dislike the concept of the game's path system, nor will it stanch the flow of complaints about the game's art style. Those of us simply waiting at attention, however, found ourselves rewarded this week with a <em>wealth</em> of new information, not to mention the best look we've yet seen at how the paths will work together in action instead of concept.<br />
<br />
And that's only the tip of the iceberg; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Gaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a> has said so many things that merit unpacking that it's almost impossible to swallow some of the implications. There is, in fact, <em>far</em> too much to unpack in a single week. So I'm going to look at paths and start figuring out everything else next week.<br />

The thing about <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>'s crafting is that it's always been an odd mixture of wonderful and terrible, much like the game as a whole. You had crazily interconnected crafts that could be frustrating to level, the simple difficulty of trying to find the items you need, and a minigame that made mass production maddeningly slow. But you also had a real sense of personal craftsmanship, and the complex interplay between quality, durability, and progress meant that your successes or failures were truly your own.<br />
<br />
None of these elements has been removed from the beta phases, but each has been streamlined and largely improved. The test phases allowed us to explore the two crafting classes based in Gridania, Carpenter and Leatherworker, and so I got to really dive into the heart of working with wood and dead animal hides. This has been quite the week if you're interested in hearing about what's going on behind the curtain. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Destiny/">Destiny</a></em> offered everyone <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/watch-destinys-law-of-the-jungle-trailer/">a new trailer</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar</a> gave us <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/massively-surveys-wildstars-scientist-and-settler-paths-the-es/">plenty of information to chew on</a>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online/">The Elder Scrolls Online</a></em> talked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/20/elder-scrolls-online-elaborates-on-crafting-and-exploration/">crafting</a>, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/final-fantasy-xivs-relaunch-set-for-august-27/">a definite date for its relaunch</a> with a new video. Tons of stuff behind the scenes.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Eldevin/">Eldevin</a></em> quietly moved into its second phase of closed beta. Oh, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></em>'s economy <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/neverwinter-days-the-great-economic-collapse-of-2013/">completely collapsed</a>, which is either bad for the beta or bad for the game's launch depending on how you see the game's current state.<br />

It's a running joke on Massively that some readers believe our lives are glamorous and that we sleep in beds made out of free video game swag. The truth is that video game bloggers are working in this field because they love the job. At least that's how it is around here. Or maybe writing in our pajamas is too posh to pass up. Do you smell that on the wind, my friends? It smells like June is fast approaching, and more importantly it smells like soon we'll be able to welcome the third phase of testing with open arms. Which is good, since I am currently going through withdrawal. I wake up in cold sweats, try to change my class in other games, start up the <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> beta client in the hopes that someone "accidentally" turned the servers back on... you get the general idea.<br />
<br />
To help alleviate this, I'm going to talk about the two pieces of the game from the first two beta phases that are in need of the most polish. While there are places to improve elsewhere, FATEs and dungeons have issues that might need a bit more hammering to fix. Or they might be fine and we just haven't yet seen enough of the game to know everything. Early access for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Marvel-Heroes/">Marvel Heroes</a></em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/16/marvel-heroes-prepares-for-the-end-at-the-beginning/">just around the corner</a>, if you consider 11 days to be a corner. It'll be a chance for everyone to get started on the process of hitting the level cap... or at least getting halfway there before grinding dailies. Your mileage may vary. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/">DUST 514</a></em> finally <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/massivelys-dust-514-launch-impressions/">ended its testing earlier this week</a>, meaning that you can go be obliterated by an orbital strike <em>right now</em> if you own a PS3.<br />

"This is going to be the best game most of us have built in our lives," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine Studios</a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Gaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a> said bluntly.<br />
<br />
The game in question, of course, is <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/"><em>WildStar</em></a>, and it represents Gaffney's 10th or so trip through the beta development chute on the way to release. There's an undeniable note of pride and calm confidence in his voice as he talks about the baby that's growing inside Carbine's womb right now, and he was definitely not shy in opening up about all of the decisions and work the team's made as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar/"><em>WildStar</em></a> heads into its second trimester... er, closed beta test.<br />
<br />
Before that, however, Gaffney provided a recap of the first closed beta test. He said that it was pretty limited, with only 2,000 players testing out the lowbie Exile zones. The team moved some of the elder game content down in level so that people could test it out, and developers spent some time doing impromptu Q&amp;A sessions with players in the field. As a result, Carbine is ready to shift over to the Dominion side and greatly expand the beta in size and content. It's been a couple of years since we last heard about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdom-Under-Fire-II/"><em>Kingdom Under Fire II</em></a>, so it's good to check in with one of our neighborly MMOs to see... oh hey! <a href="http://steparu.com/news/front-page/1213-kingdom-under-fire-ii-launch-this-year">You're launching</a>! What are the odds that this would happen during a completely random house call?<br />
<br />
OK, so the good news is that <em>Kingdom Under Fire II </em>has been scheduled for a 2013 launch. Unfortunately, the bad news is that so far this release will be limited to Southeast Asia at first. Apparently developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blueside/">BlueSide</a> wants to see the game in action in that region first before rolling it out elsewhere.<br />
<br />
The title is a combination of action-RPG and real-time strategy, promises battlefields with "thousands" of soldiers fighting at once, and will be launching on the PC and PlayStation 3.<br />

We all like to stop and smell the roses. And then we like to pluck those roses, bring them home, and melt them into component enzymes that will allow us access to a temporary attack power buff. <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> is beautiful, sure, but you need that attack power bonus.<br />

If it isn't obvious, this week's stop on my whirlwind beta tour is the fine art of grabbing items from the landscape and turning them into crafting fodder. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> had quite an interesting gathering system at launch, but it also had some pretty serious problems, and so the relaunch had to completely revamp the system while retaining the soul of the original version. No pressure.<br />

Not a whole lot changed in terms of gathering between my time in San Francisco and my time in the beta, but I did have a great deal more time to try out the gathering system. Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/naoki-yoshida/">Naoki Yoshida</a> has a couple of significant announcements concerning the testing and release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV:</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/a-realm-reborn/"><em>A Realm Reborn</em></a>. He's excited to announce that the relaunch of the title will be happening in "summer 2013," with a more specific date to be announced by the end of May. He also said that details and pre-orders for the collector's edition will be coming this month as well.<br />
<br />
"The whole team has been working at full throttle to ensure the game will be ready for a summer release," Yoshida said. "It won't be long before you can mark your calendars and begin the final countdown!"<br />
<br />
Before the launch happens, however, phase 3 of beta testing needs to happen. This will start at the beginning of June, according to Yoshida. The MMO formerly known as Prince, er, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Prius-Online/"><em>Prius Online</em></a> has gone into beta in preparation for its relaunch. The newly titled <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arcane-saga/"><em>Arcane Saga</em></a> represents a reworking of <em>Prius'</em> old content to include new features and content.<br />

 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/netmarble/">Netmarble</a> Head Project Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-kim">Joe Kim</a> invites you to check out the changes: "With the start of the beta phase today, players will finally get to experience for themselves all of the improvements we've made to the world of Prius over the past year."<br />

Assuming all goes well in the beta, <em>Arcane Saga </em>is scheduled to launch in the next couple of months. You know <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/26/city-of-steam-open-beta-early-admission-starts-may-10/">the special beta keys</a> that you needed to access the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a> test? Yeah, well, you don't need them any longer. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> has decided to drop the key concept in order to open up the beta to everyone. So starting on May 10th, anyone who has an interest in checking out this steampunk MMO may do so with no hassle.<br />
<br />
The upcoming beta test will be continuous and will feature an improved tutorial, events, wiliderness levels, and the Massively-approved technique of jumping. The team also removed the old faction system and teased the possibility of a MOBA-like addition to the game.<br />

This week is packed with MOBA news as almost every major title released a new patch. <a href="https://www.infinitecrisis.com/en"><em>Infinite Crisis</em></a> introduced new champions Poison Ivy and Gaslight Catwoman and announced that the game's closed beta will start in two days' time on May 8th. <a href="https://account.hirezstudios.com/smitegame/"><em>SMITE</em></a> introduced new Norse god Fenrir the Unbound, and <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com"><em>League of Legends</em></a> released a champion spotlight on new Ice Witch champion Lissandra. <a href="http://dota2.com"><em>Dota 2</em></a> also released new hero Elder Titan based on the original <a href="http://playdota.com"><em>DotA</em></a> hero Tauren Chieftain, and <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> released several months of balance changes at once in its colossal version 3.1 update.<br />
<br />
 <a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a> celebrated hitting $9 million US in its ongoing crowdfunding campaign, and to celebrate, developers controversially gave all current backers free lifetime insurance on their ships. The title's success has also spurred <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> to show off its own virtual reality dogfighter called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/evr"><em>EVR</em></a> that uses the upcoming Oculus Rift headset.<br />

 <a href="http://diablo3.com"><em>Diablo III</em></a>'s first anniversary is just over a week away; details of any celebrations haven't yet been released. Developers confirmed that the PlayStation 4 version will not be getting mouse and keyboard support and that the PC version won't be getting support for analog controllers. If you are hanging your hopes and dreams on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a> coming along to rescue you from the humdrum of life and your precious mortality, well... be prepared to settle in for a good long wait. Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chris-McDonough/">Chris McDonough</a> said <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/report/article/the-world-of-darkness-will-offer-you-a-world-of-vampires-to-conquer-bu">in an interview</a> that the title is still in pre-production and that players shouldn't expect to see it for a few years yet. However, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP">CCP</a> did show a few technical videos to the press to assure folks that the game is still alive.<br />
<br />
McDonough did have good news to share, however. <em>World of Darkness</em> has a 70-person crew that is currently building the framework for the title, and according to the producer, they are "making phenomenal progress." The team plans to host the entire game on a single server where active combat and politicking between vampires will be the crux of the content.<br />
<br />
"We're making sure this is a next-generation MMO. It's very focused on movement and motion and capturing what it's like to be a vampire," he said. "People ask about our high level designs for <em>World of Darkness</em>, and we've called this a vampire simulator. What's it like to be a vampire. Not a superhero, but a super-powered individual. We know now that the next test phase for <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com."><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> will not be until June. This is good insofar as the next test will contain a lot more <em>stuff</em> and bad insofar as <em>I want to play</em>. Those of you living vicariously through impressions articles such as this one probably have less of a struggle with this scenario. And there is still a chunk of the first two phases to be discussed, obviously.<br />
<br />
If combat is the usual "how" of MMOs, quests are the usual "what." <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> started out with a handful of quests and gained several more during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Naoki-Yoshida/">Naoki Yoshida</a>'s tenure, but quests still weren't the main leveling content in version 1.0. That was a function reserved for guildleves, which have taken on a new role in the beta phases just as quests are enjoying an expanded importance.
