This week in Betawatch, the biggest news is that the game everyone <em>expected</em> to be in beta isn't around. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/arenanet-confirms-no-beta-for-this-weekend/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em> is not running a beta weekend this weekend</a>, meaning that anyone hoping to spend their long weekend in Tyria is going to have to go with the classic version. We also say farewell to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/aeria-launches-star-supremacy-browser-mmorts/"><em>Star Supremacy</em></a> in wake of its launch.<br />
<br />
However, for those who love testing unreleased games, it's not all bad news. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/world-of-warplanes-closed-beta-starts-may-31st/"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a> has announced its closed beta kicking off at the end of the month, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/mechwarrior-online-announces-closed-beta-and-founders-program/"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a> is heading into its closed beta this week. While you won't have a chance to get your paws on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> just yet, we do have a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/">nice new shiny set of impressions from the beta</a> to help tide you over.<br />

The Dragons, Templars, and Illuminati will have to wait two more weeks to dive into their organizations: Originally slated for June 19th, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world">The Secret World's</a></em> release is delayed until July 3rd. Early access will open on June 29th.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> also announced the final two beta weekends. The first, titled "Hell Raised,'" will run from June 15th until June 17th and will include the Illuminati and Dragon starter experiences as well as allow players to leave Kingsmouth for the Savage Coast. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archeage">ArcheAge's</a></em> CBT4 ended a couple months ago and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XLGAMES</a> has been busy putting the information gathered to use. To showcase changes and improvements made during the break between CBT4 and CBT5, a series of videos is planned. The first video in this series highlights the transformation of one starting area, Rainbow Fields; once described as empty and flat, this region is now populated with more buildings, has a more diverse landscape, and sports improved weather effects.<br />
<br />
Although there is still no official word on <em>ArcheAge</em> being released to the western market, sandbox hopefuls can check out the latest improvements after the break.<br />

While it's easy to get caught up in the big picture side of the development process, we risk overlooking the smaller but crucial work that goes into gluing the game together. One of these tasks is the naming of the world and all that lies within it. Content Designer <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/author/annie-vandermeer">Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda</a> wrote an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> blog post about the challenges and decisions that went <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/whats-in-a-name-annie-vandermeer-mitsoda-on-naming-tyria">with labeling everything under the sun</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Mitsoda said that the team has established a system for nailing down names. After coming up with the name, the team sends the moniker through a "sanity check" that makes sure it's not too hard to spell or say. The team also tries to weed out the more obscure or overt pop culture references, then passes along the names to the team's "loremasters," who check it against an internal wiki for consistency.<br />
<br />
She goes on to share a few anecdotes about the naming process, such as the evolution of Charr names, the difficulty of putting a label on an animal that has no Earth equivalent, and how the creepy rat-dog Murellow got its name. 	In response to increased agitation among impatient fans, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Martin-Kerstein/">Martin Kerstein</a> graced the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/10150882710644209">Facebook page</a> with a bit of confirmation: There will be no beta weekend event this coming weekend. This stretches the BWE schedule longer than the one-per-month that the team is trying to adhere to, but Kerstein included some explanation that will hopefully keep fans from panicking.<br />

		Our BWE1 was super successful, we exceeded our expectations. As some of you might have experienced first hand, this lead to some technical issues. To make sure we are not running into the same situation for BWE2, we recently had a stress test, and we are currently deploying a lot of additional hardware in our datacenters.<br />

		We will be able to tell you exactly when BWE2 will take place as soon as all the hardware has been deployed.</blockquote>
	While this wasn't met with glee by most fans, the news <em>does </em>allow folks to carry on with their lives and make full use of the upcoming holiday weekend. Turn over the engine and light up the jet thrusters because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mechwarrior-online"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a> <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/259-operation-inception">is stomping into closed beta</a> this week. Anyone who registers on the official site has a chance to check out the hot 'mech action before the rest of the crowd. While the beta is currently limited to North America, <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/260-operation-clarification">there is no IP blocking</a>, so anyone can jump in as long as he or she doesn't mind a little lag.<br />
<br />
Perhaps of more interest is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piranha-games">Piranha Games'</a> announcement of its founder's program, code-named <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/259-operation-inception">Operation Inception</a>. Yes, we guess the devs saw the movie too. While <em>MWO</em> will be free-to-play with optional microtransactions, Operation Inception lets players invest their money up-front to get special goodies and an early start to the game.<br />
<br />
Players can buy into the founder's program starting June 19th. It will come in two tiers: a $30 veteran package and a $60 elite package. The veteran package includes $40 of in-game currency, a month of premium account status, a founder's tag, and early access. The elite package includes $80 of in-game currency, two months of premium status, the founder's tag, early access, and an exclusive BattleMech.<br />

The company says its "army of test pilots will be increased drastically" as a result, so be sure to sign up on the official <em>WoWP</em> website. <em>World of Warplanes</em> is a lobby-based flight combat game set during aviation's golden age. It features aircraft ranging from 1930s biplanes to 1950s jets. MMOs have to make money; that's a fact of life (and of business) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mike-obrien">Mike O'Brien</a> knows quite well. <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2012/05/21/guild-wars-2-interview-monetization/#s:guildwars2-16">In an interview with VentureBeat</a>, O'Brien explained how the studio is handling the monetization for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and blasts RMT companies for their practices.<br />
<br />
O'Brien addressed why <em>Guild Wars 2</em> is being offered not as a straight free-to-play title but as a retail product with an up-front cost. "The answer is we're really focused on creating the highest-quality MMO, not the lowest-cost MMO," he replied. "I think <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>is one of the best values in gaming, period. Where else can you get this many hours of enjoyment, of content, of polish, of replayability, for $60?"<br />
<br />
He also took the opportunity to expand upon his own blog post covering microtransactions from a few weeks ago. "Creating a microtransaction system that doesn't upset or alienate your player base is straightforward, once you clearly define what's in-bounds and what's out-of-bounds," O'Brien stated. He says that ArenaNet wants to be "open and honest" with players regarding the in-game store options and promises that these will be "non-essential additions to the game and convenience services" only.<br />

O'Brien also had strong words about the shady practices of RMT companies, practices that ArenaNet is trying to combat by offering its own in-game RMT system. "Where there's a real profit incentive, someone out there in the world will lie, cheat, and steal to make that profit, " he said. Do you believe that the MMO genre has been stuck in a rut over the past few years? So does <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/christopher-lye/">Christopher Lye</a>, the global brand director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a>, who publicly denounced the post-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> trend in the industry as stagnant.<br />

<a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/170650/Is_Guild_Wars_2_the_answer_to_stagnant_MMO_design.php">In an interview with Gamasutra</a>, Lye stated that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is walking the walk when it comes to genuinely challenging the status quo in the industry. "Honestly, I think the problem is that there's been a lack of change in MMO design and that <em>Guild Wars 2</em> is a reaction to that," he said. "People will call this risky, but we think it's riskier just to churn out the same MMO that everyone has played before."<br />
<br />
Lye pointed to <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> scaling dynamic event system and its action combat as examples of how ArenaNet is forging its own path. Observing that player consumption of content is "virtually insatiable," Lye said that the team has developed tools to allow it to implement changes and additions to dynamic events in hours, not weeks.<br />

Is this industry stagnation coming to an end? What words are music to players' ears? "Biggest content update in its history." And <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runescape">RuneScape</a></em> fans are getting just that! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jagex">Jagex</a> announced today that a massive content update bringing the all-new combat system, dubbed The Evolution of Combat, is on its way to the free-to-play fantasy game. The game-altering new system is promised to be more immersive and more involving.<br />
<br />
Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-ogilvie">Mark Ogilvie</a> noted that a combat revamp was the community's most requested update and he emphasized the value of community feedback. To garner more feedback, Jagex is offering <em>RuneScape</em> members the opportunity to test the update starting June 26th. This limited-access beta will then run through September, giving beta participants the chance to help "shape the future of one of the most important elements of the game."<br />

For the opportunity to participate in this exclusive combat system beta, players need to be an existing member of <em>RuneScape</em> or sign up for membership on the official site by June 1st.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mechwarrior-online"><em>MechWarrior Online's</em></a> devs aren't quite ready to disclose specifics on the game's minimum specs or beta process, but news for both is coming "soon." These vague assurances were the anomaly <a href="http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/05/235-tweetchat-roundup">in a recent community Q&amp;A</a>, during which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piranha-games">Piranha Games</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/russ-bullock">Russ Bullock</a> and Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bryan-ekman">Bryan Ekman</a> spilled on all of the minutia that fans were dying to know.<br />
<br />
The duo said that they're "working very hard" to get <em>MWO </em>servers into every major region and that information about beta will be coming next week. They did confirm that there will be an open beta at some juncture, however.<br />
<br />

Everyone seems to freak out about grabbing his or her special character name at the launch of a new MMO, and we imagine <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> will invoke the same emotions. Instead of leaving this oh-so-important action to Day One, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> is giving players a chance to reserve their <em>Guild Wars 2</em> names... <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/reserving-your-character-name-for-guild-wars-2">starting today</a>.<br />
<br />
The way it works is that ArenaNet will be reserving all current <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> names for the launch, and players attached to those names can then swoop in and collect them from the start. Three caveats are attached to this process, however: You have to log into <em>Guild Wars </em>sometime in 2012, you have to claim your names in <em>Guild Wars 2</em> by launch day, and you can't secure <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> single names (as <em>Guild Wars</em> forces you to make two-word names).<br />
<br />
The studio says that there are 20 million two-word names in use at this point, and we suspect that list will grow much longer after today. These names can be reserved at any point from now until whenever ArenaNet decides to compile its master list. Then tomorrow might be a lovely day for you, as the studio is emailing out the first round of closed beta keys for registered participants after a short delay from its original key-handing-out schedule.<br />

It is unknown how many keys will be sent out and to whom. Last month, CCP told <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eve-fanfest-2012">Fanfest </a>attendees <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/redeem-your-eve-fanfest-code-for-dust-514-beta-access/">that they would be among the first to test</a> the anticipated MMOFPS. <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/article/72271/psn-voucher-distribution-announcement">The <em>DUST 514</em> website states</a> that the studio is sending out Fanfest keys first and keys to standard registered players "soon after."<br />

To celebrate the release of the closed beta keys, <a href="http://www.dust514.com/en/news/article/72332/dust-514-psn-code-distribution-delayed">CCP is holding a "special event"</a> over the weekend. The details of this event are forthcoming.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> player Kelly Wells became inspired to go on a real-life adventure due to her explorations of Tyria and <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html">an encouraging TED talk</a> -- and so she did it. Starting from Maine, Wells and her faithful dog <a href="http://ameranth.wordpress.com/">crossed America to California by foot</a>, ending the trip with a visit to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> in Seattle. The developers were so impressed by Wells' journey that they decided to make her part of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>.<br />

<a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/meet_ameranth">In a new ArenaNet blog post</a>, Lead Content Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-johanson">Colin Johanson</a> shares how bowled over the devs were when they met Wells and why her epic journey had to become part of <em>Guild Wars 2</em>. "If we all took that perspective on life, deciding to make positive changes and refusing to let anything get in our way, it'd be amazing to see how much we'd all be able to accomplish," Johanson said. The team then collaborated to come up with a similar figure for its upcoming title.<br />
<br />
Thus was born Ameranth, a Sylvari explorer who traverses the width of Tyria with her trusty dog, Anna. When players encounter her, Ameranth is known to say, "Ever since emerging from the Pale Tree, I've had the itch to see what the world has to offer. If all goes well, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/blade-and-soul/"><em>Blade &amp; Soul</em></a> will be making its public debut in July. That's the good news; the bad news is that the launch will be confined to Korea for the time being.<br />

The company <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/en/2012/05/15/bladesoul-is-expected-to-launch-in-july">recently announced in an earnings call</a> that the title is on track to go into open beta testing by June and then launch this July. There's some hope at NCsoft that the release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> will grow the potential gamer audience in the country, an audience that could be attracted to <em>Blade &amp; Soul</em> come this summer.<br />

Currently the game is in closed beta, with the next round of testing commencing on May 22nd. 	Watch out, <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/moba">MOBA</a> fans: A new challenger has appeared! Indie game developer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/kiz-studios">Kiz Studios</a> announced in a press release today that its upcoming MOBA title, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/smashmuck-champions">SmashMuck Champions</a></em>, is set to enter closed beta this month. Of course, if you're anything like us, you're probably wondering what the heck a <em>SmashMuck Champions</em> is.<br />
	<br />
	According to the game's official site, the title is "a free-to-play action/strategy game featuring online multiplayer combat" in which players "build and train their own SmashMuck teams... to do battle in the toughest sport on Planet Muck." Gameplay-wise, the game seems to be your standard MOBA with a few not-so-standard twists. The addition of persistent champion gear plus interesting new mechanics such as stat-boosting training routines aim to put a new spin on the old formula. But hey, you don't have to take our word for it. The game will be entering closed beta testing on May 27th, so if you're a MOBA fan looking for a new thrill, just head on over to the game's official site and sign up for yourself. Oh, and while you're at it, don't forget to check out the game's latest official trailer after the cut.<br />

If you enjoyed the first peek into the secrets of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom/">Funcom</a>'s upcoming game, you'll be happy to know that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World</a></em>'s second beta event <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/the_secret_world_beta_weekend_2_kingsmouth_calling_part_two">has already been announced</a>. The next weekend event starts on May 18th at noon EDT and runs until May 21st at 3:00 a.m. EDT. Several European sites will be giving away keys for this particular beta, but players who have pre-ordered the game beforehand will automatically have access to this event.<br />

The new event will feature a number of new areas, quests, and storylines. Players can learn more about the residents of Kingsmouth who have held out despite the town's current state as well as meet representatives of the Orochi Corporation observing the dark occurrences. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> continues to roll out the rewards for being well-liked this week. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> crossed the half-million Facebook like barrier, and as a result, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150859536394209&amp;set=a.135044094208.103264.114036714208&amp;type=1">the studio released a new epic piece of art</a> for its fans.<br />

The picture is of Destiny's Edge, the adventuring group that features so prominently in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, facing a rather fearsome foe: The Shatterer. According to the Facebook page, this is actually an in-game screenshot that's been "embellished" by ArenaNet artist <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-dociu/">Daniel Dociu</a>. As with the other pictures that it has released, ArenaNet has made this image available as <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arenanet/6945989372/sizes/l/in/photostream/">a high-resolution version</a> as well.<br />

When <a href="http://tinyspeck.com/">Tiny Speck</a>, maker of the wonderfully odd browser-based sandbox <a href="http://www.glitch.com/"><em>Glitch</em></a>, announced that it would be taking the game back to a beta state in order to retool many of the game's most essential systems, I was skeptical. Heck, I've remained skeptical. I stopped streaming the game due to time constraints but continued to log in and enjoy it. More specifically, I didn't feel like continuing to stream it until the new releases were officially <em>released</em>. I tend to enjoy betas but want to hold back my opinions until games are actually open, and this return to beta made me feel the same way.<br />
<br />
Lately, however, the changes being tested and implemented into the game have just been too cool to stay hushed about. Housing is receiving wonderful, wonderful updates that will allow for complete creative freedom that is rarely seen in MMO housing. The UI is transforming as well, and new skills and creatures are being introduced.<br />

Beta or not, there is some crazy-cool stuff going on in the land of Ur. 	One common issue with MMOs is that certain zones become sparsely populated as the playerbase outlevels them or skips them in favor of newer, more exciting zones, which can lead to frustration for players who want or need to complete group content in those zones. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a> is aiming to nip that problem in the bud with a new feature coming to the <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/world-of-warcraft">World of Warcraft:</a></em> <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/mists-of-pandaria">Mists of Pandaria</a></em> beta: cross-realm zones.<br />
	<br />
	The feature does exactly what it says on the tin: When a zone is underpopulated, the players in that zone will be given the option to form a group with players from a select pool of realms (presumably the server's battlegroup) with whom they can run about and quest as usual. In addition to treating underpopulation, the new feature will allow overpopulated zones -- such as new race starting zones -- to be split into multiple instances to prevent overcrowding. It will also allow players to group with their RealID friends just as they would for a cross-realm dungeon, so players who want to level up with friends on other realms should be quite pleased with the addition. Between this new feature and <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em>'s</a> guesting, the days of being separated from your cross-server friends might just be numbered. If you haven't played <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spirit-tales"><em>Spirit Tales</em></a> yet, you've officially run out of excuses. The game's open beta kicks off today, according to publisher <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/koramgame-ltd">KoramGame Ltd</a>.<br />

The devs have added guild islands, sigil stones, and a sweetheart system to the current build, so there are plenty of things to do even if you get tired of fighting fantasy mobs in <em>Spirit Tales</em>' whimsical 3-D world.<br />

There's also an enhanced pet system, new legendary gear and instanced dungeons, and a level 45 cap (beyond which lies "exclusive new content," according to KoramGame). More info, including signup details, is available at the official <em>Spirit Tales</em> website.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/waren-story"><em>Waren Story's</em></a> got a new website as of this morning. What's <em>Waren Story</em>? It's a new PvP-centric free-to-play MMO from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aeria-games">Aeria</a>.<br />

The site features bits about the fantasy title's story, its customizable weapons and gear, and plenty of info on skills and character classes. There's also a section devoted to <em>Waren Story's</em> mercenary mechanics, which allow players to hire a wide variety of powerful combat allies. Elf archers, dwarf warriors, and Dryad queens are all yours for the taking, Aeria says.<br />

It's hard to fathom how you can have "secret" societies when over a million new people know about them, but somehow we don't think <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> sweating the security breach. In fact, the studio seems quite proud of the fact that a million players have signed up to test <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/03/the-secret-war-draws-over-200-000-players-to-its-facebook-battle/">The Facebook tie-in</a> is also getting record views, with almost two million visits over the past few weeks.<br />

Senior Vice President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Morten-Larssen/">Morten Larssen</a> sees this as a shining omen for a dark world: "Shattering our previous beta records gives us great hope for <em>The Secret World's</em> launch and its future. Combining this positive number with the excellent feedback we have received from both beta testers and the press that have played the game, make us very optimistic for a successful launch of <em>The Secret World</em>."<br />

Are you in withdrawal after the last <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> testing weekend? Feeling the need to get back in the game, even if it's just for one night? If so, you're in luck, as the team has just recently announced that <a href="http://www.facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/10150848164094209">the game will be performing a surprise stress test on Monday, May 14th</a> between 2:00 p.m. EDT until 9:00 p.m. EDT. It's a chance to log back in, play for a bit, and get more of a taste for the game over those seven hours.<br />
<br />
Worth noting is that the stress test is only for pre-purchasers, but beyond that there are no specific test requirements -- you can continue using the characters you created during the beta weekend. Players may experience some slight performance issues, since the purpose is to try and alleviate issues before the next beta weekend rolls around. It's a heady time for both the team and playerbase, as this 2007 title steps into the big leagues of expansion-holding MMOs. And because we know you hate waiting for all the goods, we joined Turbine on the test server for an advance look at some of the hottest features coming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/going-inside-dungeons-and-dragons-online-menace-of-the-underdar/">with June's launch</a>.<br />

"Whenever we design a new feature we always ask ourselves how it impacts our players' ability to play with their friends," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-flannum">Eric Flannum</a> stated about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em>. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/08/guild-wars-2-wants-you-to-play-with-friends/">In an interview</a> focused on connecting players together, Flannum made it clear that the team was looking for every possible opportunity to pave the way for social hookups.<br />
<br />
Flannum addressed the specifics of how <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> servers work in relation to transfers. While there is a traditional paid transfer service (which can be used only every seven days), all players will have the ability to hop over to friends' servers as a guest. Player team-ups are further made possible by the dynamic level-adjusting system that scales players down to the zone they're occupying.<br />
<br />
This process is made easier by ArenaNet's decision to make friend lists and guilds account-wide instead of specific to a server. So while each guild has a home server, other chapters can exist elsewhere. 	Beta weekends are all the rage these days, and now <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> is getting in on the action. The studio has announced that its upcoming fantasy-horror MMO, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-secret-world">The Secret World</a></em>, will be the subject of a series of weekend beta tests, the first of which is beginning this weekend.<br />

	From Friday until Sunday, players who were lucky enough to get their hands on beta keys via preorders or giveaways will be able to jump into the boots of a Templar initiate. After undergoing the proper procedures for joining the less-than-secretive secret organization, players will be whisked away to Solomon Island, New England, where they will be tasked with finding the source of the ancient evil threatening Kingsmouth. Ever since the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/storybricks"><em>Storybricks</em></a> toolset was announced, a common question people have had is, "That sounds great, but how easy will it be to actually make my own MMO world? Will I need to be a master programmer or something?" The answer is, apparently, quite easy. The <em>Storybricks </em>devs took a few minutes to put together an alpha gameplay video showing how simple it is to set up complex social interactions between characters.<br />
<br />
As players piece together the "bricks" that dictate a character's mood, actions, and responses to the player, every encounter in the game turns into a "choose your own adventure" that has a variety of outcomes.<br />
<br />
One of the situations that was shown is that of a player encountering an irritated wizard. In the first attempt to interact with him, the player pesters the wizard, which prompts the wizard to unleash a zombie. If the player apologizes, the wizard is astonished, unsummons the zombie, and asks to be the player's friend. But in a second attempt, the player chooses to zap the zombie instead and then punch the guard that comes to investigate. This outcome leads to banishment from the city.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/phantasy-star-online-2"><em>Phantasy Star Online 2's</em></a> closed beta has caused a fair bit of excitement in the game's fan community. As open beta draws near, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> is unveiling more of the MMO sequel's features.<br />
<br />
The next testing phase will feature a new desert planet called Liliipa, not to mention new story quests, new costumes, and something called a time attack quest. Fan site <a href="http://bumped.org/psublog/phantasy-star-online-2-now-features-a-desert-planet/">Bumped.org</a> has the details on these and other reveals from last week's live event in Tokyo.<br />
<br />
<em>PSO2</em> producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/satoshi-sakai">Satoshi Sakai</a> also showed off a new snow zone on the planet Naberius. He told fans that the upcoming open beta will be level-capped at 30, while players at level 20 and above will have access to hard mode quests and encounters.<br />
<br />
<em>PSO2</em> is currently in development for Windows, Android, and iOS platforms. The open beta is tentatively scheduled for "early summer 2012."<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/City-of-Steam/"><em>City of Steam's</em></a> been building up some strong word-of-mouth in the community, and we've been quite eager to get our hands on this steampunk MMO. The good news is that we just may have that chance come July, when <em>City of Steam</em> <a href="http://www.cityofsteam.com/city-of-steam-alpha-release-date-set-in-july">enters alpha testing</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mechanist-Games/">Mechanist Games</a> recently announced that work on the game is progressing to the point that it's ready to undergo player testing. While there isn't an exact date yet, it's certainly enough to know that July will be a special month.<br />

"We're actually quite pleased that quite a few of those who participated in the sneak peek test told us that the game was already looking like an alpha build," the team writes. Enterprising <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> player and Reddit member <a href="http://www.reddit.com/user/that_shaman">that_shaman</a> went above and beyond the call of duty by providing a useful tool for the growing beta community: a giant, fleshed-out map of the new Tyria. In it, he fits the current explored player regions of <em>Guild Wars 2</em> on top of the preexisting <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars 1</em></a> world map to show just how faithful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> has been in staying true to its landscape and outposts.<br />
<br />
The full<em> Guild Wars 2</em> map encompasses around 25 zones, six cities, and some odds and ends. One of the more controversial aspects of the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is its microtransaction system, the details of which were tightly under wraps until the recent NDA-free <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/the-daily-grind-did-you-participate-in-the-guild-wars-2-beta-we/">public beta weekend</a>. Now that the public's had a look-see, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> brought its gem store out into the open for all to see.<br />
<br />
The browser version of the store, which is also available in the game itself, is only partially functional at the moment. While it does list the categories, items, and icons for its wares, it's lacking any prices, descriptions, or ability to purchase.<br />

It's a happy day if you've been yearning to scratch that browser-based sandbox itch. Yes, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/glitch"><em>Glitch</em></a> has returned with an overhauled user interface and the new imagination system.<br />
<br />
What the heck is imagination? Well, glitches now have imagination (iMG) instead of XP. You gain iMG by questing, crafting, and collecting (i.e., by playing the game), and you can spend it on upgrades and various other gizmos still in the works. In short, iMG allows you to "create, grow, and customize the world and your character." It also serves as a nifty way of explaining new game abilities as opposed to boring old XP.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tinyspeck">TinySpeck</a> has authored a FAQ on the <a href="http://www.glitch.com/help/faq/#imagination">imagination changeover</a>. Give it a read-through before you log in, as both the level curve and your character's accumulated XP have undergone significant changes.<br />

<br />
<em>Diablo III's </em>Wizards are described as "brilliant practitioners of the arcane arts who deftly wield the energies of fire, ice, lightning, and even time itself in the pursuit of their enigmatic goals." These Wizards are part of an underground rebellion that is seeking great power, and they are scorned by the mages in charge, yet they may be the only ones to save the world from the great new threat that's arisen.<br />

Well there you have it, ladies and gents: The first <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a><em> </em>beta weekend over which people had direct control over their participation has come and gone. It was quite the exciting weekend, and it's amazing to see the volume and content of feedback being provided. If you missed out on a chance to get your hands on the game, feel free to form some vicarious impressions; there's tons of footage out there from oodles of people. Massively has a <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/massivelytv/videos">few streams recorded</a>, and I have a niggling feeling that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/bogotter">someone</a> will have plenty of extra footage.<br />
<br />
It was great to be back in the game, it was great to get to talk about stuff with people and stream and share pictures, but mostly it was great to see the world populated the way it really needs to be to feel alive and whole.
