I've had my fill of MMORTS games. I love them, and I mean <em>love</em> them, but after being asked to look at the 567,386th title from the genre, I am getting a wicked case of tunnel vision. Sometimes I wish I could hit a switch and see these games with the eyes of a brand-new player, to truly judge their quality without any preconceptions. That's not possible, unfortunately.<br />
<br />
Luckily, once in a while there comes along a title that feels fresh or does enough with design to seem new and clever. <a href="https://alliances.commandandconquer.com/?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=alliances.commandandconquer.com&amp;utm_campaign=p4f-common-nav"><em>Command and Conquer Tiberium Alliances</em></a> stands out from the crowd with its interesting combat and a casual approach to hardcore gaming. Before anyone asks in the comments section: Yes, <a href="http://www.istaria.com/"><em>Istaria</em></a> is still around. I've noticed that many players seem to think if something is out of their sight, it's out of every other player's mind too, but the truth is that there are many, many smallish and indie MMOs in existence that not only continue to do well but offer unique gameplay for anyone who might be interested. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Istaria/"><em>Istaria</em></a> is even still referred to as <em>Horizons</em> by many, even though that change was made a long, long time ago. Despite all of the outdated opinions and its status as an "older" game, interesting things are happening in the world of <em>Istaria</em>.<br />

Here I am making myself crazy once again. Why? Why do I insist on visiting games that I know will provoke issues both physical and mental? I guess it's because lately I have been fascinated with MUDs, or multi-user-dungeons. They are better described as text-based MMOs or choose-your-own-adventure books written with thousands of other players. It's a fascinating concept, especially when you consider how dissimilar it is to today's modern, easy-to-play offerings. The ancient design of the MUD now feels fresh, so much so that I have decided to dedicate a future article about the possibility of MUDs' viability in today's three-dimensional world.<br />
<br />
I have found some good and some very bad over the last several weeks. I've also stumbled across brand-new versions of the migraines that often bother me when I concentrate way, way too hard on PC text. I have to admit that my issues do not seem that common, but it is important to look at a game from all angles, even from the angle of someone who has specific issues. <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a> has tested my patience over the last few weeks and several hours. <a href="http://www.jagex.com/">Jagex</a>, developer of the ever-popular browser-based game <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, is known for its rapid development schedule. Heck, I fully expect that this article will be outdated by the time I finish its rough draft. Players of the Jagex flagship MMO can log in to find new items, places to explore, and quests to do almost weekly. I tend to poke my nose into the game several times a week, so I know that a more casual player has endless amounts of content to run through. I might level up my construction skill and then switch to something completely different. I just recently spent an afternoon playing with just the <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/bonfires">new bonfire skill</a>.<br />
<br />
Of course, those pesky developers are at it again: giving me <em>more</em> content to go through even though my highest skills hover around only the level 40 mark. This time it's the <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/the-runespan">Runespan</a>, a brand-new area that helps players level runecrafting by offering them a one-stop shop that is more casual and non-competitive than the normal runecraft experience.<br />

I'm not much of a shooter fan and probably never will be. Sure, I have as much fun blasting my way through monsters as the next gamer, but I rarely have the patience or physical stamina to overcome the pains and frustrations of shooter PvP. After all, my first rule of PvP applies especially well to shooters: <em>There is always someone better than you</em>. <a href="http://www.planetcyrene.com/html/index.html"><em>Planet Cyrene</em></a>, the new world being added to the impressive portfolio of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a>, tasks players tasks similar to those found in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/?"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> and mixes in PvP arenas that promise to frustrate (or delight) players, depending on their skill level. I sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ed-robles-III/">Ed Robles III</a>, lead developer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/entropia/">Planet Cyrene</a>,</em> to see just how nasty and expensive things might get.<br />

Remember, this is the Entropia Universe we are talking about, and that means players will spend real money on bullets, armor, and practically everything else. Fortunately, players can earn items that are worth real money as well. <em><a href="http://www.darklegends.com/">Dark Legends</a></em>, the new title from mobile MMO king <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studios</a>, is already creating a buzz with its liberal use of an energy pool that is sapped as players go through standard gameplay. If this mechanic were packaged any differently and inside a sandbox, it's possible that people would call it "realistic" or "hardcore." Unfortunately, problems set in as soon as players realized that playing the game for hours on end would require some infusion of real-life funds or the ability to kill pretty large chunks of time in non-combat areas.<br />
<br />
I would argue that the gameplay does not have to be designed for marathon gaming sessions. It's very possible that the "casual" part of the game's description <em>actually means</em> "casual." I still had issues with the mechanic; don't get me wrong. But if I was bothered by anything it would be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Legends/"><em>Dark Legends'</em></a> lack of borrowing features from <a href="http://pocketlegends.com/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>, Spacetime's flagship mobile MMO, which offers actual persistent areas and other MMO staples.<br />
<br />
Of course, it's possible that Spacetime is simply trying something new. When <a href="http://tinyspeck.com/">Tiny Speck</a>, maker of the wonderfully odd browser-based sandbox <a href="http://www.glitch.com/"><em>Glitch</em></a>, announced that it would be taking the game back to a beta state in order to retool many of the game's most essential systems, I was skeptical. Heck, I've remained skeptical. I stopped streaming the game due to time constraints but continued to log in and enjoy it. More specifically, I didn't feel like continuing to stream it until the new releases were officially <em>released</em>. I tend to enjoy betas but want to hold back my opinions until games are actually open, and this return to beta made me feel the same way.<br />
<br />
Lately, however, the changes being tested and implemented into the game have just been too cool to stay hushed about. Housing is receiving wonderful, wonderful updates that will allow for complete creative freedom that is rarely seen in MMO housing. The UI is transforming as well, and new skills and creatures are being introduced.<br />

I felt a little nostalgic this week. Heck, at my age, I feel nostalgic every time I smell chimney smoke or hear Christmas music. I suspect it will only grow more common with age. MMOs have been such a huge part of my life for well over a decade now that I feel nostalgic about many of the things that happened during that time, and for many of the characters I have grown -- and lost.<br />
<br />
I'm not <em>overly </em>sentimental about it, but it is interesting how we feel about the pixelated versions of ourselves, the ones we control while sitting at a keyboard or while touching a tablet. I don't want to downplay how important gaming can be for many of us, either. Once, years ago, I met a fellow player in a social game called <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/There/">There</a></em>. She was a wonderful person who had over time lost the ability to walk. She loved the freedom that the avatar gave her. Needless to say, she was <em>very</em> connected to her character.<br />

I made a short list of some of my favorite characters from the years. This column <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/08/rise-and-shiny-mabinogi/">will turn two years old</a> on May 8th, 2012. I'm proud of not only the fact that I have been able keep up the column with a decent amount of content and writing that has slowly gotten better over that time but also the fact that I have introduced the readers of Massively to so many games that they wouldn't otherwise have known about. Recently, I have <a href="http://www.twitch.tv/massivelytv">increased my efforts by streaming</a> odd and indie games as well as writing about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmobility/">relatively new world of mobile MMOs</a>.<br />
<br />
This might all seem like I am attempting to build some sort of indie hipster street cred, but the totally honest truth is that nothing thrills me more than exposing a new game to the world or giving an older game some much-needed sunlight. If someone posts, "This game is still around?" in the comments section, I call that a win.<br />
<br />
From now on, I am going to tweak how I do things for Rise and Shiny in order to raise the quality of coverage. <em><a href="http://www.tibia.com/mmorpg/free-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game.php">Tibia</a></em> is an MMO that has been hanging in there for many, many years. You have to give it respect for that alone. When you add on the fact that the game seems to be updated relatively frequently and boasts a pretty good-sized playerbase, it becomes even more intriguing. I've played it in the past and have enjoyed the simple graphics and slower-paced gameplay. I like how NPCs chat with you, old-school <a href="http://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>-style, and how there seems to be a lot more to the game than meets the eye.<br />
<br />
There are plenty of eyesores, however. The developers recently released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tibia"><em>Tibia</em></a> in a beta browser form. While the client was always easy enough to download and run on my multitude of devices, I always prefer to just jump into my browser and load it up.<br />
<br />
I found a lot of neat little systems but also quite a few bugs or odd design choices. Colors and layout can be a problem, and I am not the biggest fan of Flash-based MMOs. Still, I am enjoying myself so far and look forward to more. I am a <em>huge</em> fan of social media. Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus -- it all makes sense to me and has shown to be a very useful tool in not only communicating with friends but finding new games, developers, and websites. My Twitter feed provides enough news and information that I can skip any standard media. I haven't watched a local newscast for a long, long time. On top of that, I can communicate with readers in real time, sharing photos and tidbits of cool.<br />
<br />
Has social media affected MMO gaming? It definitely has. Watch any smart developer's Twitter feed and you will see the community team interacting directly with players, answering questions, hosting contests, and helping players feel as though the developers are actual people. Social media has also changed how we connect to our games, MMO or not.<br />
<br />
All of this means that <em>everything</em> is social now. Going to the dentist? Share it with your friends. Defeated a boss monster on your Xbox? Tweet it. Just picked up that epic sword in <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a>? Post it to your Facebook. Heck, many MMOs now have a Twitter or Facebook option built right into the client. All of this instant connectivity is nice, but it's possible that the "massively" part of MMO will soon apply to any game. This article was a long time coming. Not only have I avoided taking a look at any sort of pure MUD for many years, but I meant to write this up last week but real life interrupted my plans. I just didn't think it was fair to write up a first impressions based on only a few hours of play. I was quite hesitant to take a deeper look at <a href="http://www.play.net/gs4/"><em>Gemstone IV</em></a> mainly because I knew that the non-stop reading would surely create more migraines that might derail my work <em>again</em>. I was very worried, actually.<br />

Luckily, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gemstone-iv/"><em>Gemstone IV</em></a> client is customizable enough to allow me to create a "book-style" experience: black text on a white background. I don't think I'm alone in my inability to view bright, colored text on a dark background comfortably. If I were, popular websites would still look like they were from 1996. We've moved past ugly fonts and horrible color combinations.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately it took me most of the time with <em>Gemstone IV</em> just to learn how to play, make the text comfortable to read, and understand what my character was supposed to be doing. Once again, <a href="http://www.droidgamers.com/">Droid Gamers</a> sent me a sweet tip regarding yet another Android-based MMO. This time around, it's <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asobimo.iruna_alpha_en&amp;feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hc29iaW1vLmlydW5hX2FscGhhX2VuIl0."><em>Iruna Online</em></a>, a real and actual MMO complete with open worlds, "<a href="http://android.ue.iruna.jp/index">millions</a>" of other players, quests, equipment and monsters. In fact, the game reminds me in some ways of <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/iruna-online/"><em>Iruna Online</em></a> is not the first mobile MMO that has felt like the <a href="http://www.square-enix.com/na/">Square-Enix</a> favorite, perhaps because they all share a similar art style. As I played, it struck me that the newer smartphones have enough power to run a game that looks as good as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xi/"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>, albeit with some graphics options turned down or off.<br />
<br />
The similarities basically end there, however. <em>Iruna Online</em> is one of the newer stock of mobile MMOs that show mobile massively multiplayer gaming is really here. It should not be shocking or surprising anymore. Just as in the PC market, we are going to see many titles stream from the Eastern market. I recently threw out a prediction that within five years, most of our MMO content will be coming through our browsers. To be more specific, I think that most players in the United States will be enjoying their favorite MMOs within a browser. That can mean several things but does not refer to games like <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, a client-based game that is only signed-into at the browser level. As with any discussion about genres, mechanics or styles in the MMO world, I have to be very specific.<br />
<br />
It's pretty likely that a very large percentage of the US playerbase is already playing browser-based games. Look at the American market for games like <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, <a href="http://us1.battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com/?afterlogin=2"><em>Battlestar Galactica Online</em></a>, <a href="http://www.clubpenguin.com/"><em>Club Penguin</em></a>, <a href="http://www.drakensang.com/"><em>Drakensang Online</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.evony.com/">Evony</a></em>, and <a href="http://ministryofwar.com/"><em>Ministry of War</em></a> and you might just find millions of players.<br />
<br />
Next we need to consider that there are more games coming into the browser market. This new batch is essentially a group of standard, client-based MMOs that are porting themselves to the browser. This week, I decided to download and install <a href="http://truly-free.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>. I haven't played it since beta. Although I was not impressed with it at the time, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/mj-guthrie">my favorite</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion</em></a> columnist has been covering the game in such a way that I knew some good things had happened to the game. And after all, it's free now. Right?<br />
<br />
I was nervous from the moment I installed the game. <a href="http://us.ncsoft.com/en/">NCsoft</a> hosts a notoriously odd account management system. Sure, once you break the code and understand how to make an account for your master account that signs into your game account (or something like that), it might seem elementary. Until that moment, though, the system makes you feel like an idiot. It makes you feel as though the publisher literally doesn't want you to play the game.<br />

I had a week filled with such moments. There are certain designs in the MMORTS genre that have frankly started to burn me out. I was a bit worried that I had reached my tolerance point and would not be able to stomach another city-builder until I had put some time between me and my latest preview or first impressions. It's an amazing genre, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/the-soapbox-my-mmorts-is-more-mmo-than-your-mmorpg/">as I have argued before</a>, it's more MMO than most MMOs. As in many genres, successful design is copied. The ironic thing is that all of these copies often dilute the market, making it worse on everyone. As much as I love the genre, I am a bit sick of running into the same design, stereotypical settings, and mechanics. Of course, we cannot take these copies and paint the whole genre with a terrible brush; if we did that, all of MMOdom would be in trouble. Still, I'm sick of it.<br />

Luckily <a href="http://www.fireflyworlds.com/">Firefly Worlds</a>, maker of <a href="https://www.strongholdkingdoms.com/"><em>Stronghold Kingdoms</em></a>, has a very persistent "PR ninja" who made a point to poke at me on Twitter. This week we had some great stuff! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/mj-guthrie">MJ</a> has been streaming like her life depends on it lately, first jumping into <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, then spending some time in <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard: Saga of Heroes</em></a>. She <em>had</em> to pay some attention <a href="http://truly-free.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>, of course, and there, she showed off some player housing and took a trip on an airlink. Mike was back in <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> avoiding death-rays and spacemen and later found himself dead in <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a>... again. The <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mists-of-Pandaria/">Mists of Pandaria</a></em> have tempted <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/richieprocopio">Richie</a> once again, and thankfully our cameras were there to capture it. Meanwhile, I spent some time boating in <a href="https://secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a> and gave a first look at <a href="https://www.strongholdkingdoms.com/"><em>Stronghold Kingdoms</em></a>.<br />

I know this is not what you want to hear if you are a fan of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Spacetime-Studios/">Spacetime Studios</a> and were really excited about it new title, <a href="http://www.darklegends.com/"><em>Dark Legends</em></a>, but here goes: The energy mechanic that seems to have so many players upset is really not that bad at all. See, at some point many games decided to use a limited amount of energy to fuel character actions, and once it runs out, it seems like game over. It has always been the case (ever since <a href="http://company.zynga.com/games/farmville"><em>Farmville</em></a> first made the mechanic so popular that misguided gamers thought <a href="http://company.zynga.com/">Zynga</a> had somehow invented it) that energy in these sorts of games refills naturally, over time, for free.<br />
<br />
I played through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Legends/"><em>Dark Legends</em></a> on launch night and was able to complete an entire campaign with some energy left over. Sure, I had to pause once to refill a couple of bars (they take five minutes each to refill), but other than that, I had no issues with it. If the energy becomes an issue at later levels, I do not know.<br />
<br />
Let's not confuse things here: The energy mechanic in <em>Dark Legends</em> is nothing new, it's not a scam, and it does not force players to do anything. I need your help. If you are a reader, then I need you to open your memory boxes and take a look around at the bottom. Shuffle around where all the remnants of favorite past MMOs settle and see if you can find me something. If you are a developer who is reading this, then you might indeed have some special insight into my issue.<br />

I need a game. A special game. It must fit a certain mold that is very particularly fitted to my very specific needs and wants. It's a tall order, to say the least.<br />
<br />
Now, I understand how to use Google. At least once a week I am asked something along the lines of "Where do you find these weird games you cover?" I am always tempted to link the questioner to Google and walk away, but generally I tell him it is a combination of different efforts: some searching, some tipping from readers, and more than a smidge of good luck. Also understand that I have a lot of good titles keeping me busy, but I tend to become sort of obsessed with little projects along the way. So what do I need <em>this</em> week?<br />

I've argued before</a> about the merits of being an honest cash-shop salesperson. You have to be upfront, blunt, and willing to take some heat. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bigpoint/">Bigpoint</a> is one of my favorite examples of a cash-shop dependent developer simply because it says what it means and means what it says. It sells items, sometimes powerful items, in several different titles. Granted, the studio usually offers a way to get those same items through in-game means, but that doesn't make for as good a story.<br />
<br />
We reported on Bigpoint a while ago when its reps <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/bigpoint-says-game-publishers-should-sell-in-game-advantages/">essentially said</a> that if a developer is going to make an effort to sell in-game items, it should do it the right way by making those items have a significant impact on the game by being either powerful or desirable. I cannot agree more. Bigpoint is a car lot that sells beautiful luxury automobiles. It also sells junkers and even gives out a lot of cars for free, but its charity once again does not make for a good dramatic write-up. I tend to think that if you you are going to make a cash-shop, depending on the style of game, of course, you as a developer have got to consider just what sort of impact you want that cash-shop to have on your players, and you can't be afraid to push your idea from the beginning.<br />

<a href="http://zandagort.com/"><em>Zandagort</em></a>, a very independent browser-based MMORTS by <a href="http://zandagames.com/">Zanda Games</a>, really holds a lot of promise. I want to get that out of the way first. Potential, unfortunately, has nothing to do with a player's current experience with the game. No one sits at his PC or laptop and says, "Man, I sure am excited about what this game could be, so I'll keep playing." But that very potential often makes me a little depressed. Potential for good also means potential for bad; if a game is unfinished and has the chance to grow, there's likewise a very real possibility that the game could fester, lose development love, or worse yet, die on the vine. There's no guarantee that even a "AAA" massive-budget game like <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> or <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a> will last forever or even a good amount of time. Who knows?<br />
<br />
Usually with an indie game, if it isn't shining and picking up an audience relatively quickly, it just might be in trouble. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/browser/"><em>Zandagort</em></a> has an audience; I can see players in the outer reaches of space. I am not going to pass judgment on the <em>number</em> of players simply because indie budgets are often easily supported by a smaller playerbase, but I wonder what type of audience it is. As a player of many MMORTS titles, I have grown to understand that patience is not only a virtue but a necessity. Many titles from the genre are designed to make you spend real time to do anything. It's not that they are boring or tedious; instead, they are representing what it might be like to actually grow an army or trade hub and to explore the often massive world around you. The pacing is meant to be slow. These are not games of instant leveling or non-stop quest grinding. They're meant to be played in as little as a few minutes per day. This explains a lot of their success -- just imagine how popular they are with time-strapped players.<br />
<br />
There is a time, however, after months of toiling away at building up various structures, growing a small army, or finally getting to the maxed out level in a certain area, when you can finally settle down for some <em>real</em> gameplay. It might sound silly to have to wait that long for glory, but come on... this is city-building we are talking about. Every year I attempt to go through my <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a> inventory in the hope that it actually works out for me. I really <em>do</em> want to get rid of the 7,000+ items I have after eight years in the game (my game-birthday is on May 26th!), but it's such a daunting task. Where do you start? Is organization really even needed? Well, yes it is, from what I have heard. Everyone is running in-world carrying endless pockets filled with everything possible, and that's going to cause some lag and effort on the server's part.<br />
<br />
Also, I have an obsession with minimizing my life. I hate physical stuff. It takes up room, collects dust, and just sits there. Sure, I maintain all of my art if I can and some other important items like pictures and cute little knick-knacks, but otherwise, if I don't use it, it gets tossed, sold, or set on the curb for the junk-people to grab.<br />
<br />
I feel the same way about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/"><em>Second Life</em></a>. There's a mental burden that years of junk presses onto someone, digital representation or not. It's no wonder those people in that <a href="http://www.aetv.com/hoarders/">Hoarders</a> show look so down; it's a hard life to lose the ability to throw anything away, ever.<br />

I am making a stand, slowly. This week I was lucky enough to come across a pretty cool browser-based MMORTS that offers no combat whatsoever. That's right -- this game is all about trading, conquering your neighbors with prices, and building a reputation that is better than everybody else's. <a href="http://www.remanum.com/"><em>Remanum</em></a> is brought to us by the makers of the famous <a href="http://www.traviangames.com/"><em>Travian</em></a> set of games. Slowly, but surely, the developers are trying out different styles of gameplay that all offer an art style that is obviously their own. I was thrilled to see them again try out something different with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Remanum/"><em>Remanum</em></a>.<br />
<br />
So how boring is a game that offers nothing but trade wars? Well, that all depends on how much you care for scratching your chin, sitting back, and plotting. It's a game of patience and working with others. I never pretend that most MMORTS titles are supposed to move at the same pace as <a href="http://vindictus.nexon.net/"><em>Vindictus</em></a> or <a href="http://guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>; games just have different styles. <em>Remanum</em> is a great game to enjoy any place and any time, from a few minutes to a few hours a day.<br />

Adventure Mike explored some content in <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>, while plain old Mike burned some space dust in <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> and cast many spells in <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a>. I decided to look at <a href="http://nadirim.com/"><em>Nadirim</em></a> because it's been a while and gave the Rise and Shiny treatment to <a href="http://www.remanum.com/"><em>Remanum</em></a>.<br />

I've been having a lot of fun with <a href="http://www.parallelkingdom.com/"><em>Parallel Kingdom</em></a> lately. It's a location-based MMO brought to us by <a href="http://www.perblue.com/">PerBlue</a>, one that offers a layer of reality thanks to the fact that it is built on top of the real-world map. You can claim your real-life block, help other members of your city, and trade with other players from all over the world. It's actually a pretty simple design, but it helps to give the game a sense of realism.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Parallel-Kingdom/">Parallel Kingdom</a></em> isn't the only location-based game out there, though. I thought it might be cool to take a look at some of the other titles to see what the competition has to offer. So far I have only found a few that are stepping up in quality. Ah, graphics. If ever there was a deciding factor for most gamers, it would be graphics. How does a game look? How do the graphics make you feel as a player? I'm as guilty as anyone else who might consider himself to be a graphics snob of sorts, but I lean more in the opposite direction. For whatever reason, I am not as easily impressed as I once was and tend to go for more representational graphics. I'm not quite at the stage where my MMO gaming has been reduced to a blob of text on my screen, but I definitely enjoy simplicity.<br />
<br />
The problem is that many MMOs do not provide that precise formula to hit my graphics sweet spot, or as in the more common scenario, there are parts of certain titles that I would adore if only they hadn't been packaged with the rest of the game. <a href="http://www.ryzom.com/en/"><em>Ryzom</em></a>, for example, is one of my favorite freemium titles. To this day, it packs more graphical punch and originality than games a quarter of its age.<br />

Now I find myself leaning more toward very basic graphics delivered smartly through my browser. I've even gone through an Anime obsession! With the recent announcement from <a href="http://www.soe.com/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> that <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard: Saga of Heroes</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/21/vanguard-going-free-to-play-this-summer-beefs-up-dev-team/">will be going free-to-play sometime this summer</a>, questions immediately began to surface. It's funny how tastes can change. I know mine certainly have, especially when it comes to entertainment. Heck, I used to swear by <a href="http://ramonesworld.com/">The Ramones</a> and a bit of <a href="http://www.slayer.net/us/home">Slayer</a>; now I tend to think that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCnf46boC3I">this Joni Mitchell song</a> is a work of sheer genius. It seems that as I grow older, the less I care about impressing other people. My gaming tastes have changed, but maybe not as dramatically. I've never been a hardcore player and have never enjoyed spending countless hours repeating the same task. That sort of behavior tends to turn a hobby into a boring job. MMORPGs are notorious for being filled with content that is often ripped off from other games, so it surprised me when I thought about today's topic.<br />
<br />
I came to the conclusion that leveling is <em>not</em> a bad thing. When I say leveling, I mean growing a character by performing an activity, getting better at it, gaining experience and hitting a new level. It's not a bad way to represent real-life growth. In the past, I've made a few attempts at trying <a href="http://www.realmofthemadgod.com/"><em>Realm of the Mad God</em></a>, a "co-op fantasy MMO shooter" by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Wild-Shadow-Studios/">Wild Shadow Studios</a>. But I've been unsuccessful primarily because I couldn't find a way to get past the seemingly repetitive gameplay, horrible forum community and non-MMO status. Luckily a reader named Rick wrote to me and convinced me to give it one more go, saying that it <em>was</em> an MMO by showing me pictures and listing examples of how many players can be found in one area.<br />

The MMORTS genre is easily one of my favorite genres. There's so much potential in a game that is essentially a giant, endless boardgame with thousands of players. An epic scale occurs in even the smallest of titles because players control not only one or two grand heroes but entire armies that swarm from sprawling cities. Though many of Massively's readers might not hear a lot from the genre, I believe this genre to be one of the most popular out there. Browser-based access doesn't hurt, either, and generally the MMORTS titles I find do a great job of covering their design bases.<br />
<br />
You know I have to play Devil's Advocate, however. Despite the fact that the genre is packed full of potentially wonderful gaming sessions, there is so, so much that needs to improve. I often find myself achieving little things in many different games while other gamer buddies of mine are busily conquering actual gods or dragons within one or two particular titles. Sure, I would love to join a group of battleworn adventurers as they took down one of the final bosses in almost <em>any</em> game, but I rarely find the time to work a character into the ranks of the ascended.<br />
<br />
OK, so I have time, but not if I wanted to do what I do here. That is to say, I am not dedicated to one game because it is my job to tell you readers about several games. About every game. About as many games as possible. I can't do that while maintaining a high DPS score. It's a give and take, but I love to explore, fortunately.<br />

<em><a href="http://limeodyssey.aeriagames.com/">Lime Odyssey</a></em> is an Anime-themed free-to-play MMO brought to us from publisher <a href="http://www.aeriagames.com/">Aeria Games</a>. It features three unique races and... oh, forget it. You already know this probably. The game has a lot of buzz behind it, and Aeria is known to put out some great titles. I knew that when I was invited to check out the alpha for a first impression of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lime-odyssey/"><em>Lime Odyssey</em></a>, I would find a game that was high-quality and beautiful and ran well.<br />
<br />
Sure enough, I did find that game. There's something magical about so many Korean titles. Many of them sport some of the most refreshing and original artwork and music, and the engines that many of those titles use is perfectly fit for almost any machine. Yes, there are the three races to choose from, the great Anime graphics, the neat crafting system, and combat systems and much more. If you have played <a href="http://www.parallelkingdom.com/"><em>Parallel Kingdom</em></a> by <a href="http://www.perblue.com/">PerBlue</a> before, then a lot of what I am going to describe might sound familiar. If not, then it might sound very unique and exciting. The truth is that I have been attempting to get into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Parallel-Kingdom/"><em>Parallel Kingdom</em></a> for a while but always found myself a bit overwhelmed, so I was excited to be invited to check out PerBlue's new title <a href="http://parallelmafia.com/"><em>Parallel Mafia</em></a>. I hoped that I might squeeze in some questions about <em>Parallel Kingdom </em>while I had the team on the line. Sure enough, I not only got introduced to the new title but left the interview knowing a lot more about <em>Parallel Kingdom. </em>I<em> </em>have been playing heavily since then. As I compare the two titles, I can see a lot of similarities, but there are some nice differences as well.<br />

Both titles are location-based MMORPGs. I have always wanted more options in the genre, but I imagine it's a tough one to develop in. What's the point of the real-life connection? I have to be honest -- I wasn't the biggest Nintendo fan. I grew up right as the whole thing was really smashing and keeping kids glued to their TVs, but I generally went outside and played more than stayed inside and played games. (Odd, huh?) Still, I had my fun with certain titles. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contra_(video_game)"><em>Contra</em></a> rocked my boat, along with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_Icarus"><em>Kid Icarus</em></a> and a bit of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Bros."><em>Mario Brothers</em></a>. My friends, on the other hand, were full members of the Nintendo nation. They subcribed to the magazine, played the same games for hours and hours, and generally acted as though the fate of the real world hung in the balance as they attacked that last boss monster.<br />

Stylistically, the games have left a mark on the genre. Many of those same titles still sell as well, some of them reaching so many variations that I lost track a long, long time ago. I thought it might be fun to list off some free-to-play MMOs that remind me of those old classics.
