	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/08/the-daily-grind-are-follow-commands-taboo/"><img alt="Are follow commands taboo?" data-src-height="300" data-src-width="530" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/wow-linear-epl-114.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 300px;" /></a></div>
Earlier this week, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> patched out a surprising mechanic present in the game for a very long time: the /follow command in battlegrounds. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> community guru Bashiok explained that the primary goal was to <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com/2013/03/06/no-more-follow-in-battlegrounds">curb botting</a> in PvP, although apparently the team isn't too sad about the detrimental effect the change will have on at-the-keyboard multiboxing, either. What Blizzard doesn't appear to have anticipated was the effect the tweak would have on <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/8087879808?page=1">visually impaired players</a> who <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/blind-player-ben-shaw-on-raiding-and-wow-for-the-sightless/">rely on /follow commands</a> to kick butt.<br />
<br />
<em>World of Warcraft</em> isn't alone in shunning the /follow command; <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-1/">Guild Wars 1</a></em> famously limits following, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em>, to the delight of <a href="http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/51075-follow-command/">some players</a>, omits it entirely, which is sort of a pain in the butt when I need to go AFK and can't just follow on my guildies for 30 seconds as we run to the next orangie. I'm annoyed at that, so I can only imagine how upset people <em>awesome enough to PvP blind</em> feel at having their lifeline to fun stripped away after so many years.<br />
<br />
So what do you guys think? Is this a good change for <em>WoW</em> and other MMOs? Do you think the potential for harm to blind players or legitimate AFKers should outweigh the potential for harm by botters and multiboxers?<br />

Acknowledging you have a problem is the first step to rectifying it. And for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/">Diablo III</a></em> fans, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard's</a> recent admission that the game is lacking a sustainable endgame gives hope that the problem is on the road to recovery.<br />
<br />
In a recent post on the official forums, Community Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bashiok/">Bashiok</a> stated the company believed that the item hunt would would work for a sustainable endgame but now recognizes that isn't the case and admits that players are eventually "going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already)." Bashiok goes on to state that while there isn't currently anything to really keep players engaged, upcoming patches will offer more things for players to do.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/05/blizzard-admits-diablo-iii-lacks-long-term-sustainable-end-game/">Blizzard admits Diablo III lacks 'long-term sustainable end-game'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 10:30:00 EST. We've been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/diablo-iii-players-report-eruption-of-hacked-accounts/">the mass reports</a> of hackers bypassing passwords and authenticators to rob <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> accounts blind, and now we have a new twist on the story. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard </a><a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619664?page=13#242">confirmed</a> "an increase in reports of individual account compromises," <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619846?page=29#571">the studio says</a> it has no hard evidence that hackers have found a way to skirt around the authentication system.<br />
<br />
Community Manager <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619846?page=29#571">Bashiok</a> said that the company is taking the claims "extremely seriously" and is investigating the rash of account compromises. "Despite the claims and theories being made, we have yet to find any situations in which a person's account was not compromised through traditional means of someone else logging into their account through the use of their password," he said. "While the authenticator isn't a 100% guarantee of account security, we have yet to investigate a compromise report in which an authenticator was attached beforehand."<br />
<br />
Blizzard is assisting compromised customers by restoring stolen items and rolling back their accounts. The studio <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149619846">has a post up on its forums</a> to help players protect their accounts and get assistance if theft occurs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/blizzard-denies-diablo-iii-authenticator-hacking-claims/">Blizzard denies Diablo III authenticator hacking claims</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. OK, have we all gotten the jokes about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Diablo-III/">Diablo III</a></em>'s launch out of our systems yet? Not quite? It's understandable, since the huge and much-hyped launch wound up with a <em>lot</em> of serious problems from the start. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> isn't oblivious to the problems, however, and an official statement from community manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bashiok/">Bashiok</a> <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5150106401">apologizes for the issues that players have been experiencing</a>. Bashiok chalks the incidents up as a simple matter of human error: "Despite very aggressive projections, our preparations for the launch of the game did not go far enough."<br />
<br />
In order to make sure that the game is running smoothly for everyone before adding another wrinkle, Blizzard is moving back the auction house launch from May 22nd to an as-yet-unspecified later date. He also does note that the game should now be running fine for everyone, with requisite knocking on wood. So while you may have been a bit stuck on launch day, you should be in the clear now, plus you've got <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5150106401">Blizzard's apologies for the delay</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/blizzard-issues-an-apology-for-the-state-of-diablo-iiis-launch/">Blizzard issues an apology for the state of Diablo III's launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 May 2012 12:30:00 EST. This week <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>'s Bashiok caused a stir over a cheeky forum post asking a fan to lower his expectations of the upcoming title. He continues posting rampantly to the forum this week to defend recent game design decisions. <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> delivered its first test build using its new deployment system, and Gaming With Gizmoh raised over $1,000 US for Child's Play with a 24-hour marathon of the beta. <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> took a look at its Filipino playerbase, while <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> was struck by a massive exploit that saw the European servers taken offline for days.<br />

The month-long <a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/"><em>Blacklight: Retribution</em></a> open beta started today, with the introduction of three beta events with prizes and a new video tutorial for the Heavy Metal map. <a href="http://riseofimmortals.com/"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> celebrated its first anniversary of unveiling the game to the public this week and offered a sneak peek of its creepy new Immortal Azcadelia. Finally, <a href="http://www.torchlight2game.com/"><em>Torchlight II</em></a> developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/patrick-blank">Patrick Blank</a> talks about polishing content and delivers an update on where the team is in development.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/not-so-massively-diablo-iii-expectations-and-polishing-torchli/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: Diablo III expectations, polishing Torchlight II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/not-so-massively-diablo-iii-expectations-and-polishing-torchli/">Not So Massively: Diablo III expectations, polishing Torchlight II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST. The most recent tempest in a <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Diablo-III/">Diablo III</a>-</em>shaped teapot has been community manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bashiok/">Bashiok</a> making a statement to fans <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/22/blizzard-tells-diablo-iii-fans-to-lower-their-expectations/">urging them to lower their expectations for the game</a>. Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jay-Wilson/">Jay Wilson</a> decided that this was worth a direct reply and stated <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4079872821">in a recent open letter to the community</a> that Bashiok's statements were "obviously sarcastic" and that the team does want fan expectations to remain high. The letter stresses that the development staff is quite happy with the game as it continues development and the current internally tested build in a better state than the beta.<br />
<br />
Wilson goes on to claim that fans can expect a release date announcement in the near future, avoiding the dreaded <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> incarnation of "soon." Given his appraisal of the beta state, we suspect that the game will be heading for a retail edition before too long, at which point players will be able to decide for themselves whether or not their expectations were met.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/24/blizzard-clarifies-bashioks-statements-about-diablo-iii-and-hin/">Blizzard clarifies Bashiok's statements about Diablo III and hints at release announcement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. For some time, the <em>Diablo</em> franchise has been touted by PC-gaming purists as one of the landmark reasons that PC gaming is superior to all others. Well, not anymore! Though <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a> has made numerous statements that they were "seriously considering" a console version of the title, CM <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/bashiok">Bashiok</a> tweeted today that the upcoming <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/diablo-iii">Diablo III</a> </em>would be making the jump to consoles, giving us our first official confirmation. <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/josh-mosqueira">Josh Mosqueira</a>, who has worked on such titles as <em>Company of Heroes</em> and <em>Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War</em>, is heading the charge as the console version's lead designer. Aside from those small details, however, we know absolutely nil about the title's console version (or to which consoles it will be coming, for that matter), but now that the news is out and about, we imagine that Blizzard will be making an official announcement very soon, so keep your eyes peeled and we'll bring you the latest as it comes.<br />

	Yesterday we ran a rumor that a senior level designer on <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a>'s <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/titan"><em>Titan</em></a> project, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/john-staats">John Staats</a>, had been laid off. We've received confirmation presumably from the man himself that he is no longer working at Blizzard, though the reasons for his firing are unknown. Rumors also ran wild that Blizzard had seen some kind of "mass layoffs," but <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/bashiok">Bashiok</a> stopped by the forums today to put an end to that, saying, "Hey guys, out of respect for their privacy, we don't discuss individual employees, but the speculation circulating about 'massive layoffs at Blizzard' is just a rumor." <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/zahrym">Zahrym</a> confirmed this on his personal Twitter account, as well. What Staats' absence will mean for the future of <em>Titan</em> remains to be seen, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we get word.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/blizzard-john-staats-let-go-mass-layoffs-just-a-rumor/">Blizzard says mass layoffs are 'just a rumor'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Nov 2011 16:30:00 EST. <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2369917233?page=1#9"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/mc.jpg" style="border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
It's the old guard vs. the new guard in a recent <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> forum thread, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard's </a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bashiok/">Bashiok</a> <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2369917233?page=1#9">stepped in to comment on the title's move toward accessibility</a>. <em> "What we've always been trying to do," </em>he said,<em> "what </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">WoW</a><em> has always been about (and to which much of its success is due) is to make an accessible MMO."</em><br />
<br />
Bashiok understands the older, so-called "masochistic" style of gameplay, but he says that MMOs are trending away from this in an effort to attract rather than repulse gamers. <em> "I think that changing mechanics to be more reasonable and less punishing is an improvement, not a detriment, to games in general... But I feel we're lucky to now be in an age where those ideals (intended or not) are giving way to actual fun, actual challenge, and not fabricating it through high-reach requirements."</em><br />
<br />
While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cataclysm/"><em>Cataclysm's</em></a> difficulty levels are a matter of some controversy these days, it's undeniable that Blizzard has tuned <em>World of Warcraft</em> to become more user-friendly since 2004. Bashiok notes that even at launch, <em>WoW </em>was radically different compared to its contemporaries: <em>"Anyone that looks back at the game at launch and wishes it was as challenging now as it was then is not aware of the painstaking effort put into making this game accessible as compared to its predecessors."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/11/blizzard-changing-mechanics-to-be-more-reasonable-and-less-pun/">Blizzard: 'Changing mechanics to be more reasonable and less punishing is an improvement'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 17:00:00 EST. The latest <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/blizzcast/archive/episode5.xml">Blizzcast</a> is live! This fifth outing is the post-<a href="http://eu.blizzard.com/wwi08/">Worldwide Invitational</a> episode. The bulk of its running time is dedicated to <a href="http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/"><em>Diablo 3</em>.</a> If you're interested in that pseudo-MMO, action-RPG goodness, then there is a <em>ton</em> of information in there. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/diablo-3"><em>Diablo 3</em></a> Community Manager Bashiok interviews Lead Designer Jay Wilson about the game. It's detailed stuff (e.g., several minutes dedicated to Blizzard's reasons for abandoning the grid-like inventory management of the earlier <em>Diablo</em> games), so Blizzard fans should check it out.<br /><br />Of course, here at Massively we have a special interest in <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em>.</a> We're sad to report that Blizzcast #5 is a little light on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> or <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> discussion. Community Manager Nethaera participates in the first half of the podcast, and she talks a little bit about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>WotLK</em></a>, but she mostly shares in the post-<em>Diablo 3</em> announcement glee.<hr />
