Goodness, I hope you have heard that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is releasing a new patch soon. It's been jokingly dubbed the "Jesus Patch" because it's supposed to contain everything, and incidentally, it may "save" the game. Many critics have written off the game because developers missed some essential MMO ingredients when it launched. Despite that, <em>SWTOR</em> currently stands as the fastest-growing MMO ever and retains the second largest subscription base, according to <a href="http://ea.com">Electronic Arts</a>' investor calls.<br />
<br />
During the recent Guild Summit, while the guild leaders and fan site press were shuttled off, the press made its way to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> studios to try out the new content in Update 1.2. Each member was given his or her station to tool around with. Immediately, I noticed that the two Bounty Hunters in the character selection screen wore armor I had never seen before: Black Hole armor and War Hero armor. We were about to step into the new flashpoint called the Lost Island as well as the new Novare Coast warzone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/massivelys-hands-on-with-star-wars-the-old-republic-update-1-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's hands-on with Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 1.2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/massivelys-hands-on-with-star-wars-the-old-republic-update-1-2/">Massively's hands-on with Star Wars: The Old Republic Update 1.2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 10:00:00 EST. These days fans are hungry for any word from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, which has been mostly quiet <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/soe-releases-further-breach-details-24-6-million-accounts-compr/">following the hacking intrusion</a> that required Sony to take down its MMOs on May 2nd. While we have received some news out of the company, unfortunately today's word is a sad one: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-blakely/">John Blakely</a>, SOE's vice president of development, has left the company to join <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/zynga/">Zynga</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://kotaku.com/5801093/sony-online-entertainment-loses-development-chief-to-zynga">Kotaku reports</a> that Blakely's <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/john-blakely/0/50/884">LinkedIn resum&eacute;</a> mentioned that he left SOE in April to become a general manager at Zynga in Austin. SOE has confirmed his departure, thanking Blakely for his "passion and leadership" and stating that he has been replaced by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lorin-jameson/">Lorin Jameson</a>. Jameson was the executive director of development at SOE's Austin studio.<br />
<br />
In addition to being SOE's VP of development, Blakely filled the role of executive producer for <a href="http://dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> and senior producer for <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> during his stay at the company.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/12/john-blakely-leaves-soe-for-zynga/">John Blakely leaves SOE for Zynga</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 May 2011 09:00:00 EST. I had a busy week at GDC Online, seeing some great panels and speaking with some enthusiastic developers. Since not all of you could attend this Austin, Texas event, we've done our best to bring you the highlights. Follow along after the jump for a quick rundown of what I saw, as well as the big takeaway from each.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/gdco-2010-panel-and-interview-roundup/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDCO 2010: Panel and interview roundup</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/gdco-2010-panel-and-interview-roundup/">GDCO 2010: Panel and interview roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 19:00:00 EST. There <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online">hasn't been a lot of new information</a> flying about on <em><a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/">DC Universe Online</a></em>, which is probably just a sign that the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> team over at Austin, TX are keeping their collective noses to the grinder and pushing for beta sometime in the coming months.<br /><br />Actually, according to a <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24855">Gamasutra interview with Wes Yanagi</a> that very much seems to be the case, although he doesn't out and say as much. It sounds like cross-platform and controller/UI iteration are probably giving SOE the most grief. We take it as a good sign that they're not rushing it, though, as it shows their seriousness at making this 'massively multiplayer action game' work.<br /><br />As for alpha and beta? According to Wes, <em>"We're still pre-alpha. We're really close to hitting our alpha goals, so hopefully in the next several months, we'll start talking about it."</em> Seems like the game is still a ways off into the future. So long as SOE doesn't release near a <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em> <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/cataclysm">expansion</a>, we think they'll do just fine.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/alpha-and-beta-status-updates-on-dc-universe-online/">Alpha and beta status updates on DC Universe Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Since then, Garriott has expressed a desire to leave gaming to pursue his rediscovered love for space travel, and then gaming again, and now space travel again.<br /><br />If you find yourself compelled with the space flight of Richard Garriott, and you feel like paying $65 a ticket for the opportunity, he'll be <a href="http://www.zachtheatre.org/stages/extreme_voyage.html">telling his story live on the ZACH Theatre's Whisenhunt stage</a> in Austin, TX for one night only. On Saturday, January 24th, at both 2:30pm and 8pm, you can listen to Richard Garriott talk about his experiences in space and his future plans with the space program. Michael Daubert, Studio Art Director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>, blogs on Myspace about what it's like to <a href="http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&amp;friendID=170495422&amp;blogID=454274282 ">work on the game in the setting they've created</a>.<br /><br />It's a place where every Friday is "Green Lantern Friday" when studio employees either wear GL's requisite green or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinestro">Sinestro yellow</a>. Monday is "Batman Monday"-- we think you get the picture. But having Wednesdays devoted to Aquaman... dubious. One pictures employees bringing their goldfish to work and willing them to perform office tasks. One tradeoff for having to dress in orange and green is that employees at the Austin studio are surrounded by artwork for <em>DC Universe Online</em> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-lee">Jim Lee</a> and the <a href="http://www.dccomics.com/wildstorm/">Wildstorm Productions</a> studio. The video gives us a glimpse at the roughly 1200 pieces of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dc-universe-online-concept-art/">concept art Lee and his team have produced</a> that literally wallpaper the studio. Plus you get to meet some of the dev team as Daubert alternately attempts to stay awake through <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_(development)">Scrum explanations</a> or avoid tirades from his colleagues. Unfortunately we can't embed the video for you right here, but if you head over to <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/ ">the <em>DC Universe Online</em> site</a>, you can't miss it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/06/an-inside-look-at-the-dc-universe-online-studio/">An inside look at the DC Universe Online studio</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Dec 2008 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://lucasarts.com/">LucasArts</a>' <a href="http://www.lucasarts.com/games/theforceunleashed/"><em>Star Wars: The Force Unleashed</em></a> has sold like, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/23/force-unleashed-sells-1-5-million-units-in-a-week/">a <em>bajazillion</em> copies</a> since it launched a couple weeks ago. The <a href="http://www.starwars.com"><em>Star Wars</em></a> franchise definitely sells video games, even when they get <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/starwarstheforceunleashed?q=the%20force%20unleashed">lukewarm reviews.</a> But we're not going to talk about sales today. We're going to talk about quality.<br /><br />Since this site is about MMOs, and since we're going on about <em>Star Wars</em>, you've probably guessed that today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-daily-grind">Daily Grind</a> is about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/kotor-mmo-confirmed-by-electronic-arts/"><em>Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic</em> MMO</a> in development at <a href="http://www.bioware.com">BioWare</a>'s Austin studio. We want to know: what do you think the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kotor-mmo"><em>KotOR</em> MMO</a> needs in order to achieve greatness? It can't just be <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> with lightsabers and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HK-47">sociopathic droids.</a> It needs to be radical.<br /><br />So what's it gonna take? What are you expecting -- nay, demanding -- from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> in perhaps the most hotly anticipated MMO since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> or possibly of all time?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/the-daily-grind-what-do-you-want-in-the-kotor-mmo/">The Daily Grind: What do you want in the KotOR MMO?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 08:00:00 EST. Attention, <a href="http://www.rgtr.com/">AFS recruits</a>! On the 13th of June (only a couple of weeks away!), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> will be hosting the <a href="http://www.rgtr.com/news/latest_news/announcing_the_2008_afs_war_college.html">2008 AFS War College</a> at their offices in Austin, Texas. What's the War College you ask? We're told it's one of the AFS's time-honored traditions, which brings together strategic thinkers to identify, develop, and address future issues critical to the military organizations' success. Members of military leadership hand-pick each year's class to participate in the college and these select few bring with them battle-tested feedback and strategies vital to success in the ongoing war effort. No, this isn't a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_D._Wood,_Jr.">low-budget director in a 1950's monster movie</a>, this is the brilliant work of <a href="http://www.plaync.com">NCsoft</a>'s Audio Director Tracy Bush who uses everyday household items to create the unique sound effects we've heard in some of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a>'s top games of the last 4 years.<br /><br />If you've ever played <a href="http://www.dungeonrunners.com/"><em>Dungeon Runners</em></a>, you know that along with the wonderful sense of humor in the game, the sound effects are equally as entertaining. The Bane drop ships and the horrifying whispers of <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=_Z8K5LCOGQc">"Kill them all!"</a> are all part of this wonderfully immersive experience that is just as important as graphics, gameplay or anything else in the game. <br /><br />So the next time you're playing a North American NCsoft title, listen closely to the sound effects and see if you can guess which household item was used in its creation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/ncsoft-audio-director-reveals-his-old-school-secrets/">NCsoft Audio Director reveals his old-school secrets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 13:30:00 EST. The biggest rumor has always been that it's based on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kotor"><em>Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic</em></a> IP. And what a ride that rumor has been. Just since the beginning of this year it's already been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/more-evidence-that-biowares-mmo-isnt-kotor/">falsely confirmed once</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/bioware-strikes-down-latest-kotor-rumor/">denied</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/07/rumor-new-star-wars-mmo-isnt-from-bioware/">twice.</a><br /><br />It's the most popular nonexistent game in the known universe, but is it really nonexistent after all? Oh no, here we go again! As our own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/mike-schramm">Mike Schramm</a> commented after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/bioware-strikes-down-latest-kotor-rumor/#comments">the most recent denial:</a> "If you strike this rumor down, it will only come back more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Prophetic words, those.<br /><br />A tipster <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3166834">sent 1UP an excerpt from an MMO script,</a> allegedly from within BioWare. The script doesn't sound very MMO-like, but according to <a href="http://www.1up.com">1UP's</a> <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5557327">Steve Watts,</a> it resembles dialogue in previous BioWare works, and it's "set in the historical past of the Star Wars universe." Sounds like <em>KotOR</em> to us! 1UP poked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lucasarts">LucasArts</a> for a comment, and basically got the "no comment" comment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/1up-thinks-the-force-is-with-the-bioware-mmo-again/">1UP thinks the Force is with the BioWare MMO (again)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 11:30:00 EST. Yesterday we ran a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/13/more-evidence-that-biowares-mmo-isnt-kotor/">story</a> about an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA</a> report that appeared to quietly announce that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> is working on a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kotor"><em>Knights of the Old Republic</em></a> game. That was pertinent to MMOs because BioWare is making an MMO at its Austin studio, and people have been speculating that it might be based on the <em>KotOR</em> IP.<br /><br />Well, BioWare got in touch with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> network to let us know that everyone's been jumping the gun; it turns out that the EA report was referring only in a general fashion to the <em>KotOR</em> IP (to demonstrate "the pedigree of the studio"). EA did not intend to imply that any specific new title is in development. So there goes the basis for the latest <em>KotOR</em> rumor.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/bioware-strikes-down-latest-kotor-rumor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BioWare strikes down latest KotOR rumor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/14/bioware-strikes-down-latest-kotor-rumor/">BioWare strikes down latest KotOR rumor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 20:30:00 EST. In Austin, using it was practically mandatory, or you wouldn't know where anyone was. After that, it tapered off, but then suddenly everyone in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/"><em>Second Life</em></a> was using it. However, because there's not really a search function, it's been difficult to tell who from <em>SL</em> actually uses <a href="http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/tag/twitter/">Twitter</a>.<br /><br />Sure, you could always use <a href="http://twitter.com/blog/2007/09/tracking-twitter.html">Twitter Tracking</a>, but if you value your text messages, or have trouble with the IM client, it's hard to follow. There was once a way to find people through your <a href="https://twitter.com/invitations/gmail">Gmail contacts</a>, but that's been disabled. Enter <a href="http://www.davidsterry.com/tweetscan/">Tweet Scan</a>, which allows you to search for up to five keywords and have their results delivered by email.<br /><br />A quick <a href="http://www.davidsterry.com/tweetscan/index.php?s=second+life">scan of <span style="font-style: italic;">Second Life</span></a> turns up many people I don't have on my list. I was also able to sift through <a href="http://www.davidsterry.com/tweetscan/index.php?s=massively">tweets about Massively</a>, to see what our readers think. While it's not perfect, and some results will be erroneous, it can certainly make it easier to find your friends. For those of you who have been in hiding recently, I'll let you in on a little secret: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tabula-rasa/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>, the latest MMO from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft/">NCsoft</a>, was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/05/tabula-rasa-launch-how-it-went/#comments">launched this past Friday</a>. In Austin, Texas, home to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/destination-games/">Destination Games</a>, developer of <em>Tabula Rasa</em>, there wasn't much fanfare -- but the developers did leave their offices for a few hours on Friday night to chat with fans and sign autographs. When asked about the launch, the game's producer Starr Long told us that he felt things were going well -- there were about 5000 players logged on to the game when he left the office and no major complaints emerging of yet. (Though it sounds like the launch may not have gone so smoothly in Europe.)<br />
<br />
For those of you who couldn't make the launch event, however, we have good news! While you may not have had the opportunity to hang out with Richard Garriott, Starr Long, and the rest of the NCsoft crew, we did pick up a poster sighted by Garriott and Long which we're going to give away to one of our readers! Want a signed <em>Tabula Rasa</em> poster? All you have to do is leave one comment below (just one, please!) between now and 3:30 PM EST tomorrow (that's Tuesday, November 6th, folks!). As usual, with our contests, you must be age 18 or older and a US resident to enter: please direct any questions towards our <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/weblogs-giveaways-official-rules/">official rules</a>. In the end, we'll pick one winner at random to take home this fine piece of swag.<br />

Last week, we were invited to take a look at NCsoft's Austin offices to see where the the magic behind some of our favorite MMOs takes place. Communications Director David Swofford was happy to give us a tour of the facilities and tell us a bit about how NCsoft does what it does. Nestled in the Texas hill country off Loop 360, this could be one of countless tech companies -- but don't let its ordinary exterior fool you. Want to take a look inside? There's been an anonymous <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/bioware-and-the-kotor-mmo/">leak</a> here, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/29/force-may-no-longer-be-with-soe/">clue</a> there, but we've not yet heard anything in official channels about BioWare's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-wars"><em>Star Wars</em></a> plans ... until now (maybe).<br /></div>
<br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lucasarts/">LucasArts</a> and BioWare jointly posted a <a href="http://www.lucasartsbioware.com/">press release</a> that says the two companies are sharing both development and publishing duties on a new project, with details to be unveiled "at a later date." The spin is that the game "will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment." Whatever that means. There's no way to be certain, but this might be the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/KotoR/">KotOR</a></em> MMO. We're <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16041">not the only ones</a> who are <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=7719&amp;Itemid=2">suspicious</a> about it.<br /><br />If it is, then we may have learned something exciting about the project. Each company's president provided a blurb quote emphasizing storytelling in games. If this mystery title is the <em>KotOR</em> MMO and not <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/28/kotor-franchise-to-continue/">KotOR 3</a></em> , then it's clear that both companies want to adapt BioWare's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/game-informer-gives-mass-effect-a-9-75/">proven expertise in character-driven storytelling</a> to massively multiplayer gaming. That would be notable change of pace compared to most recent MMO titles. Of course we wouldn't expect anything less from BioWare, but it's an exciting clue nonetheless.<em><br /><br /></em>[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/lucasarts-bioware-collaborating-on-something/">Joystiq]</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/lucasarts-bioware-announce-the-kotor-mmo-maybe/">LucasArts, BioWare announce the KotOR MMO ... maybe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 15:36:00 EST.
