Aztecs. Chronomancers. Mounts. Halberds. Golems. Dual wielding.<br />
<br />
These are all but a hint of what a fourth <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> campaign could have been, a campaign that was under development in the mid-2000s but was scrapped by 2007. Replacing it was the expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eye-of-the-north/"><em>Eye of the North</em></a> and the workings of a super-secret sequel to the game (which you've probably never heard of). It was the forgotten campaign, swept under a rug while it was still under the rug.<br />
<br />
But what if, in some alternative timeline, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> had gone ahead with this campaign? What if it became an established part of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> legacy, as familiar to us today as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nightfall/"><em>Nightfall</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/factions/"><em>Factions</em></a>?<br />
<br />
What if <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/utopia/"><em>Guild Wars Utopia</em></a> had lived?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/the-game-archaeologist-looks-at-guild-wars-utopia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist looks at Guild Wars Utopia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/the-game-archaeologist-looks-at-guild-wars-utopia/">The Game Archaeologist looks at Guild Wars Utopia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. Hopeful denizens of Tyria are almost certainly gearing up for this weekend's <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/guild-wars-2">Guild Wars 2</a></em> public beta test, but fans of all things mad-science are probably a bit disappointed that the insa-- err, innovative Asura won't be playable this time around. Not to worry, though; the folks over at PC Gamer got an inside look at the first 10 levels of the Asura starting experience for your pleasure.<br />
	<br />
	Of course, if there's one thing that fans of the minuscule mad scientists know to expect from the race's crazed experiments, it's that they operate entirely within the realm of Murphy's Law. That of course holds true for the Asura starting experience, which sees players battling against the rebel Asuran Inquest while also dealing with the myriad failed science projects of their compatriots. For some of the highlights of the Asuran introductory story, go check out the full article at PC Gamer.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/take-a-tour-of-guild-wars-2s-asuran-starting-experience-for/">Take a tour of Guild Wars 2's Asuran starting experience... for science!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 15:00:00 EST. Anticipation for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> is reaching a fever pitch thanks to beta invite emails. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet's</a> publicity machine is capitalizing on the mania, too, especially on Facebook. The game recently reached the 470,000 "likes" milestone, and fans were rewarded with a new piece of concept art. As you can see above, it's a huge golem boss in the Maguuma Jungle. Also note the tiny Asura in the foreground who gives a sense of the creature's enormous scale.<br />
<br />
ArenaNet is dangling another carrot in the form of the 480,000 "like" plateau. Once it's reached, players will be rewarded with another piece of art. There's even a teaser of the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150747003549209&amp;set=a.10150734454954209.413500.114036714208&amp;type=3&amp;theater">upcoming image</a> on the <em>GW2</em> Facebook page.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/25/guild-wars-2-facebook-milestone-brings-new-art-more-to-come/">Guild Wars 2 Facebook milestone brings new art, more to come</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST. It's another Thursday, and another week for Gamebreaker.TV's This Week in MMO. What's in store for this installment? Massively's very own Editor-in-Chief <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/shawn-schuster">Shawn Schuster</a> and Community Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/rubi-bayer">Rubi Bayer</a> join regular host <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gary-gannon/">Gary Gannon</a> in "mature" discussion about MMOs.<br />
<br />
First up, Gary, Shawn, and Rubi run through the topic of the mature rating in MMOs such as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp/">CCP</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-darkness/"><em>World of Darkness</em></a>. Then our intrepid hosts guide us through the magical and technological starting zone for the Asura in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. Also, saving Metropolis just became cheaper -- free, in fact! Shawn and Rubi discuss <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DC Universe Online</a>'s</em> entry to the free-to-play market. Where is the future of MMO-subscription models going? Freemium? When Shawn spoke to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sony-Online-Entertainment/">SOE</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley/">John Smedley</a>, Smed certainly favored it.<br />
<br />
Moving on to another action-based game, Rubi reveals <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera/"><em>TERA</em></a>'s PR speak within its endgame Q&amp;A statements, and Shawn admits that the small raid size in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> isn't quite big enough for him.<br />
<br />
Catch all that and more in the full Gamebreaker.TV video after the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/this-week-in-mmo-rated-m-for-mature-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>This Week In MMO: Rated M for mature edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/this-week-in-mmo-rated-m-for-mature-edition/">This Week In MMO: Rated M for mature edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 09:00:00 EST. Other games have Dwarves or Gnomes for their token cutesy miniature race, but filling this role for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> are the Asura. Last week, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a> devoted a whole week to these spunky munchkins, expounding on everything from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/guild-wars-2-asura-week-continues-with-new-video-and-web-page/">their history</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/13/guild-wars-2s-asura-week-continues-with-a-look-at-environmental/">architectural influences</a>. Today, Designers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-peters/">Jon Peters</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-grubb/">Jeff Grubb</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee/">Ree Soesbee</a> delivered an extra dose of Asura by giving us the lowdown on the Inquest and battle suit Golems.<br />
<br />
First, Grubb and Soesbee told PC Gamer that the Inquest wanted to be the culture that invented the device that would take down the elder dragons, and its members are willing to do whatever it takes to come out on top. Grubb explained, "Most Asuras will not experiment on sentients. That's one of those things that's just not a good thing. The Inquest don't have that limitation. They are more willing to not just manipulate, but to harm others because they've made the judgment that they're superior and therefore have the right to do what they will without worrying about you."<br />
<br />
Jon Peters was a little less verbose regarding the Asura's battle suit skills, mostly because these abilities are still in development. However, we learned that although the battle suit is designed for a single operator, when a battle suit is called, any race can pilot it. And when asked if these mechs could be used in PvP, Peters replied, "In World vs World vs World PvP, absolutely yes! In competitive PvP the battle suit will get banned from tournaments."<br />
<br />

We've now had an in-depth look at all five races of Tyria, and I have to say that these little guys might be my favorite. I was pretty enamored of them after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/pax-2011-massivelys-hands-on-with-the-guild-wars-2-asura/">logging some Asura playtime at PAX</a>, and I loved getting to know their cocky little selves even better this week.<br />

The final day of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/asura-week">Asura Week</a> has arrived for <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/catgory/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans, and Game Designer <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee">Ree Soesbee</a> takes the wheel with a mixed approach.<br />
<br />
Her look at the race combines hard facts with a short story about an Asura Krewe working through a dangerous task in its own devious and complicated fashion. The rest of the entry takes a deeper look at things we've learned about the Asura during the rest of this week: the political system, the various colleges, and the inner workings of Krewes.<br />
<br />
This entry serves as a nice wrap-up to Asura Week, highlighting the core of who the Asura are: highly intelligent, driven little guys with a ruthless desire to be the best and brightest. Head over to the ArenaNet blog for the full story.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/16/ree-soesbee-wraps-up-guild-wars-2s-asura-week/">Ree Soesbee wraps up Guild Wars 2's Asura Week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 15:30:00 EST. Day four of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>'s <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/asura-week">Asura Week</a> brings the thing that many fans look forward to the most: a new video and the official web page for the race.<br />
<br />
The web page gives a rundown of the Asura race's history (which can be seen firsthand in the current <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> game) as well as information on the ups and downs of being an Asura in <em>Guild Wars 2</em>. As with the other four races, there is plenty to enjoy and be proud of, but not everything is perfect. Threats from around the land of Tyria -- such as the elder dragons -- are an ongoing worry, but internal politics, individual agendas, and personal rivalries also contribute danger from within.<br />
<br />
Chief among those is the Inquest: "The greatest danger to the Asura is, to no one's surprise, other Asura. Putting aside the sometimes dramatic, even explosive, nature of their experiments, a group of Asura have banded together to form their own meta-krewe. Known as the Inquest, these Asura combine their resources into a larger organization and share their knowledge among their own members - never with those outside the Inquest."<br />
<br />
The icing on the cake is the video -- a detailed view of Rata Sum, the greatest of Asura cities. Follow along after the jump for a look at the video, and check out all the latest information on the race at <em>Guild Wars 2</em>'s new Asura page.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/guild-wars-2-asura-week-continues-with-new-video-and-web-page/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 Asura week continues with new video and web page</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/guild-wars-2-asura-week-continues-with-new-video-and-web-page/">Guild Wars 2 Asura week continues with new video and web page</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 09:30:00 EST. Day three of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>'s <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/asura-week">Asura Week</a> is here, bringing with it some detailed talk from writer <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/angel-mccoy">Angel McCoy</a>. In the new ArenaNet blog post, Angel looks at various aspects of writing the lives and behavior of the Asura. She covers everything from their views of other races, their jobs, even the ups and downs of their familial relationships: "A black sheep in the family affects everyone's reputation, so family tensions among Asura run hot."<br />
<br />
Angel makes one thing very clear: These incredibly intelligent little guys might be short on patience and long on snark, but it's not out of a sense of cruelty. "This verbal abuse may seem mean-spirited, but the Asura don't see it that way. They don't take it personally. Their competitive natures drive them to greater heights of achievement. Remember, Asura have survived against terrible odds, including their tiny statures. They've earned their attitudes, and a certain amount of bravado keeps them from being victims. With their jibes, they're telling it like they see it, and if you can't take the heat, get out of the laboratory." The blog entry is accompanied by several audio clips to lend some vocal backup to Angel's writings, so head to the ArenaNet blog to take a listen and read the full story.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/14/concentrated-magnificence-writing-the-guild-wars-2-asura/">Concentrated magnificence: Writing the Guild Wars 2 Asura</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. Asura Week continues today with another blog entry from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-barrett">Matt Barrett</a>. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/12/not-to-be-underestimated-guild-wars-2-asura-week-begins/">yesterday's update</a> looked at conceptualizing the floppy-earred cutelings themselves, today's blurb is all about their environmental art.<br />
<br />
Asuran design is heavily influenced by ancient Hindu architecture and features "massive stone columns, intricate, masterful carvings, and a sense of being inside a mountain," Barrett explains, before going on to share several thumbnail sketches and designs for more specific in-game props. While most of Barrett's showcase is in black and white, he does do color pieces as well, primarily toward the beginning of the conceptual process. After that, he says, "it's much more economical to explore designs in grayscale."<br />
<br />
So what is it that makes Asura tick, according to the ArenaNet's art department? They're "mad with ambition to harness the power of the planet, and they have all the best tools with which to do it."<br />
<br />
On a lighter note, today's update also features an Asura advice column filled to the brim with pearls of wisdom about everything from lemonade turrets to grawl-infested cabbage crops. The first highly anticipated installment of <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>'s Asura Week has arrived, courtesy of the <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> blog.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-barrett">Matt Barrett</a> is the first to weigh in with an in-depth look at the design process behind the look of the Asura race. There have been a lot of changes from the original appearance of the race as the artists worked to find a style that truly reflected who the Asura are, and Matt treats readers to the original look as well as later iterations.<br />
<br />
The blog post also includes a video narrated by Matt that shows off real-time creation of a piece of Asura concept art. Check out the video and details of Asura creation on the ArenaNet blog.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/12/not-to-be-underestimated-guild-wars-2-asura-week-begins/">Not to be underestimated: Guild Wars 2 Asura Week begins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 Sep 2011 14:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> development team has brought us <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/human-week">Human Week</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/norn-week">Norn Week</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sylvari-week">Sylvari Week</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/charr-week">Charr Week</a>. Four of the five playable races have been covered, leaving fans anxious for the scoop on the final and most diminutive race: the Asura.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> announced today that Asura Week will begin Monday and cover character and environment design, animation, lore, and writing. The team will also release new audio, video, art, and even a "Hey Bookah" advice column that's sure to put we humans firmly in our place. Several familiar names will be pitching in for Asura week, including writers <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-grubb">Jeff Grubb</a> and <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee">Ree Soesbee</a>.<br />
<br />
Asura week begins Monday, September 12th, and will continue all week. Check out the schedule after the cut for the full rundown of Asura Week!<br />

	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/the-daily-grind-are-tiny-races-persecuted/"><img alt="TDG: Asura" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/asura.jpg" /></a></div>
We've seen it across the MMO spectrum: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gnome/">Gnomes</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hobbit/">Hobbits</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/halfling/">Halflings</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dwarf/">Dwarves</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/asura/">Asura</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sprite/">Sprites</a>, Danny DeVito -- they're all ridiculed, mocked, and often targeted by other players driven to an inexplicable rage at the mere sight of them. Small races may be fiercely loved by a segment of the playerbase, but their presence serves to infuriate even more.<br />
<br />
So what is it about short races that drives good men and women to near-madness? Is it their tenacity at overcoming odds? Their propensity for kicking shins? Or their "ooh lookit the cute widdle <span style="font-style: italic;">fella</span><em>!</em>" adorability? It's hard to say, although this writer personally loves them. So chew on that, tallies!<br />
<br />
But that's not today's question; today's question is whether or not you think short races in MMOs have become persecuted, to an extent. Are they unfairly targeted just because of what they are, and if so, does that mean we've traded real-world prejudices for virtual ones?<br />

The new demo has arrived to the United States! <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> unveiled the newest demo version of <em><a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2">Guild Wars 2</a></em> last week at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2011/">Gamescom</a>, and it was filled with new surprises. Orrian undead, one of Zhaitan's underlings, the Charr starter area, playable Asura and Sylvari, and much more captured the attention of fans.<br />
<br />
ArenaNet has returned to its home turf and was presenting the demo at <a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-prime-2011">PAX</a> this weekend, and I had the privilege of diving into the game's new content. Hey <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans, bummed that you're not at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom/">Gamescom</a> right now getting your paws, claws, or ferns on the game? We have the next best thing: nearly 40 minutes of video footage for you to digest.<br />
<br />
On the Gamescom floor, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-lye/">Chris Lye</a> took time to walk Wartower.de through the full <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>demo for the event. During the tour, he shows us character customization, the Asura, and the Charr starting experience, capping it off with a giant dragon boss encounter.<br />
<br />
So what's Lye looking forward to playing the most when the game goes live? "I've already found it: the Asura Thief. I love the size, I love the animations on the Asura, and I love how great they are as Thieves."<br />

<a href="http://www.massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> revealed some exciting news this week -- well, technically it revealed exciting news about upcoming news. <a href="http://www.gamescom.de/en/gamescom/home/index.php">Gamescom</a> is just a few short weeks away, and <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/get-ready-for-gamescom">Community Team Lead Martin Kerstein penned a blog post</a> telling what fans can expect to see at the event.<br />
<br />
Fasten your seatbelts, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> fans, because whatever you've been waiting to see is probably on the to-be-unveiled list for Gamescom this year. Sylvari, Asura, PvP, mid-level play, character customization -- you name it and it's there.<br />
<br />
While exciting, all of this upcoming news has the potential to be really confusing, particularly if you haven't been following <em>Guild Wars 2</em> news closely for the past year or two. This week I've put together a little primer to help explain the history and basics of each of the big reveals coming to Gamescom. Follow along after the jump to make sure you're up to speed!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/01/flameseeker-chronicles-and-this-is-a-big-deal-why/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: And this is a big deal why?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/01/flameseeker-chronicles-and-this-is-a-big-deal-why/">Flameseeker Chronicles: And this is a big deal why?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST. Europe's largest game expo is getting ready for plenty of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> goodness, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arena.net">ArenaNet</a> will be bringing its highly anticipated fantasy MMO to the Cologne convention that runs from August 17th to August 21st.<br />
<br />
In a new post on the company blog, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/martin-kerstein">Martin Kerstein</a> gives us an idea of what we can expect from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> demo booth. The playable <em>GW2</em> build will include all seven professions revealed thus far, the complete Charr starter experience, and a mid-level demo featuring powerful Orrian enemies (and Sylvari and Asura playable characters).<br />
<br />
Last but not least, gamers will finally get their hands on <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> character customization system as well as its PvP component. Hands-on PvP experiences will be available, and players can also watch exhibition matches between developers and select European players.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/29/arenanet-revealing-guild-wars-2-pvp-and-customization-at-gamesco/">ArenaNet revealing Guild Wars 2 PvP and customization at Gamescom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 10:00:00 EST. Don't call them Bat-Men, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/skaven/">Skaven</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/reepicheep/">Reepicheep</a>; you'll address them as "Skritt" and do it with respect if you know what's good for you.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/those-sneaky-sneaky-skritt">In a new ArenaNet blog post</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ree-soesbee/">Ree Soesbee</a> reveals the latest <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> monster to plague the land: the "horribly, wickedly tricksy" Skritt. Skritt are a humanoid blend of rats and bats that live in massive colonies under the surface of Tyria, emerging to mooch and presumably harvest spoons from their victims.<br />
<br />
One interesting fact about this race is that Skritt share intelligence in an unknown way, and the more of them that congregate the smarter they become. It's this tenacity and hive-mind that have made them mortal enemies of the Asura, who are adamant that all Skritt be wiped out.<br />
<br />
So what prompted the creation of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> Skritt? <em>"We hadn't explored the idea of a hive-mind in our world before, but we didn't want to just repeat the old standard-an insectoid race. We went through many ideas, and eventually settled on the concept of a rattus rattus based horde. A major consideration in their creation was that this race had to challenge the asura on their own terms, but not be just another super-intelligent species."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/its-a-rat-its-a-bat-its-guild-wars-2s-skritt/">It's a rat, it's a bat, it's Guild Wars 2's Skritt!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 19:00:00 EST. Looking for a last-minute Christmas gift for that discerning <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fan on your list? <a href="http://arena.net">ArenaNet</a> may have just the thing in the newly released <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Guild-Wars-Edge-Destiny-ebook/dp/B003VPWXLU/ref=dp_kinw_strp_1?ie=UTF8&amp;m=AG56TWVU5XWC2"><em>Edge of Destiny</em></a>, the second novel tie-in to the popular gaming franchise. Penned by J. Robert King, the book takes place prior to the events chronicled in the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> novel, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/guild-wars-ghosts-of-ascalon-impressions-from-a-lore-nerd/"><em>Ghosts of Ascalon</em></a>, and approximately five years before <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/"><em>Guild Wars 2's</em></a> time frame.<br />
<br />
The novel features the exploits of an adventuring company that you'll meet in the new game, including Rytlock Brimstone (a charr warrior), Snaff (an asura inventor), and Caithe (a mysterious sylvari). You can grab a copy of the novel on Amazon, or sample the first chapter at the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> blog.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/23/arenanet-releases-edge-of-destiny-guild-wars-novel/">ArenaNet releases Edge of Destiny Guild Wars novel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has a very early, very wonderful holiday gift for <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fans this morning: a brand new <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> trailer. (Take a moment to cheer, then we'll move on.) The trailer is amazingly beautiful, something we've come to expect from <a href="http://www.arena.net">ArenaNet</a> and particularly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>. But if you don't let yourself get distracted by the eye candy -- something that is admittedly hard to do -- there is a lot of new information here, including more details on people and places we've already heard of, and some fascinating possibilities to explore.<br />
<br />
Take a look at the video here, then follow along with us as we explore this new information from ArenaNet. If you're unfamiliar with <em>Guild Wars 2</em>, this will help you get acquainted, but we also have some deep lore speculation for current <em>Guild Wars</em> fans. (The video can also be found at the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/">official <em>Guild Wars 2</em> site</a>.)<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/analyzing-the-newest-guild-wars-2-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Analyzing the newest Guild Wars 2 trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/analyzing-the-newest-guild-wars-2-trailer/">Analyzing the newest Guild Wars 2 trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST.
