Still having a hard time settling on a secret society when it comes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>? Fear not, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> is bringing you another theme week detailing one of the game's three factions. This time around, it's the Illuminati in the spotlight, and over the next few days we'll be on the lookout for new artwork, screens, videos, a developer Q&amp;A, and more.<br />
<br />
Funcom's version of the (in)famous Illuminati group casts its members as "invisible puppet-masters and corporate manipulators" who seek "power and wealth by any means necessary." Head to the official <em>Secret World</em> website to check out the latest <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/media/artwork#list">Illuminati-themed art</a>, and don't forget to take the <a href="http://secretwar.thesecretworld.com/">initiation test</a> to see which faction is right for you.<br />

Being given a full tour of your favorite MMO studio must be a lot like finding the Golden Ticket and getting a week pass to Disney World, all rolled into one. So if you feel a little jealous that <a href="http://www.wildstarsource.com/page/index.html/_/articles/carbine-studios-a-tour-of-wildstar-r57">WildStar Source</a> got to poke around <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/carbine-studios">Carbine Studios</a>, it's understandable.<br />
<br />
While the writer who was given the tour said that he had to "stay silent on 99%" of what he saw, there are plenty of juicy tidbits for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar/"><em>WildStar</em></a> aficionados to tide us over for a while. Apparently the studio is covered with gorgeous screenshots and art from the game, and the team is already busy collecting fan art to post in the hallways.<br />
<br />
The author did get some hands-on time with the game, during which he spent exploring the world instead of killing the local flora and fauna: "While I did not find a secret treasure or a portal to another dimension, I did find an attention to detail in both my character and the surrounding world that made me pause, several times, in appreciation... Even while playing as a spell-wielding bunny-woman who was trapped on a fictional planet, what I found most engrossing when I got my hands on <em>WildStar </em>was really the humanness of it all... as corny as that may sound."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/09/lucky-fan-gets-a-super-secret-tour-of-wildstars-carbine-studios/">Lucky fan gets a super-secret tour of WildStar's Carbine Studios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 09 Dec 2011 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/14/week-of-the-templars-storms-the-secret-world/">Week of the Templars</a> continues, as today <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> released a batch of artwork featuring the faction's look and locales.<br />
<br />
The Templars' red-and-white outfits may not be everyone's cup of Earl Grey tea, but for us and ours, it looks quite snazzy, especially on the PvP uniforms. This is a faction that says that the end of the world is no reason not to dress up in style.<br />
<br />
The rest of the concept art focuses on Templar-related areas, such as a "Camelot" castle in a park, a fighting pit, and a lounge where off-duty Templars can knock back a drink or unload a few dozen rounds at the adjacent firing range.<br />
<br />
You can get a feel for the Templar faction in our gallery below!<br />

ArenaNet's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-dociu/">Daniel Dociu</a> has another high-profile project in addition to his work on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a>: the cover of National Geographic. In this month's issue of the magazine, Dociu provides artwork to illustrate a "magical mystery treasure" of Anglo-Saxan origin that was recently found. Both the cover and the article piece show an era soldier with appropriate armor, clothing, and weapons.<br />
<br />
Dociu currently holds the positions of both creative director and art director for <em>Guild Wars 2</em>. His skill and prestige certainly isn't hurting the game's profile any, as this achievement comes on top of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/15/arenanets-daniel-dociu-wins-award-for-digital-art/">the Expos&eacute; 9's Grand Master Award</a> he won this past July.<br />
<br />
The National Geographic issue is on news stands (or, to you whippersnappers, <a href="http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/11/table-of-contents">the "website"</a>) now.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/02/guild-war-2s-art-director-illustrates-cover-of-national-geograp/">Guild War 2's art director illustrates cover of National Geographic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 17:30:00 EST. We don't care if you have the eye of the tiger -- this is the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/the-secret-world-kicks-off-week-of-the-dragon/">Week of the Dragon</a>, darn it, and you're going to give respect to it or it will roast your noggin right off your neck! As part of the focus on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world/"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> least-understood faction, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom's</a> released a quartet of artwork pieces to help give us an insight into the organization.<br />
<br />
Perhaps the most eye-catching are the Mute Monks, an ancient order of scary-looking muscle men who have sewn their lips shut and baptized their bodies with tattoos. These monks are the recruiting arm of the Dragon, but are by no means the only members players will encounter.<br />
<br />
The other pieces of concept art show off a temporary Dragon headquarters, a bang (cyber-cafe) that's a front for the group, and a possible outfit for a Dragon agent in the field.<br />
<br />

It's not every day that an MMO turns 10, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">Mythic</a> is taking full advantage of the situation to hype up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot's</em></a> impressive milestone by treating players to a few goodies. First up is a highly detailed mural depicting the conflicts, races, and classes of <em>DAoC </em>over the years. Mythic has been revealing the mural piecemeal over the last few weeks before finally unveiling it today to the playerbase.<br />
<br />
In addition to this poster, Mythic's unleashed Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/stuart-zissu/">Stuart Zissu</a> to film a video laying out the plans for the game's celebration. Zissu talks about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/29/dark-age-of-camelot-gears-up-its-newbies/">the new training hubs</a> designed to get beginners on their feet, epic encounters in the world for groups to tackle, moral arcs that give players concrete choices to make, UI changes, and the 10th anniversary t-shirt. Players logging into the game in October will also find that they'll be enjoying several bonuses to XP, crafting, and more.<br />
<br />
You can watch Zissu get the crowds pumped up for the party after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/dark-age-of-camelot-unveils-its-10th-anniversary-masterpiece/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dark Age of Camelot unveils its 10th anniversary masterpiece</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/dark-age-of-camelot-unveils-its-10th-anniversary-masterpiece/">Dark Age of Camelot unveils its 10th anniversary masterpiece</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 15:00:00 EST. So it's official, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/antec">Antec</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> are going out. OK, maybe it's not quite that creepy, but a new press release does note that the two companies have an "official relationship," which will be publicly consummated at next week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-prime-2011">PAX Prime</a> event.<br />
<br />
Antec, known primarily for its PC hardware and upgrade components, will be opening an online boutique featuring custom PC cases emblazoned with artwork from NCsoft franchises including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>. Antec's PAX Prime booth will also be hosting an exclusive <em>City of Heroes Freedom</em> demo for convention attendees, and you can read all the details via the full press release at MarketWire.<br />

	Hot off the press from <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gamescom-2011">Gamescom 2011</a>, we bring you a new round of screenshots from the upcoming collaboration between <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/trion-worlds">Trion Worlds</a> and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/syfy">SyFy</a>, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/defiance">Defiance</a></em>.<br />
	<br />
	For those of you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/08/e3-2011-trion-worlds-talks-defiance/">not up to speed</a> on what exactly <em>Defiance </em>is aiming to be, here's a crash-course. <em>Defiance </em>is set to be the first-ever collaborative effort between an MMO and a TV-show, with actions occurring in each influencing the story of the other. Players will be put in the shoes of the citizens of San Francisco Bay Area, while the TV show takes place in and around St. Louis. Earth is under attack by a mysterious breed of aliens who are looking to terraform Earth until it suits their own needs, and of course this means that all humans must die. Humanity isn't just going to take that sitting down, though, and it's up to players to fight off the alien hordes and reclaim their planet.<br />
	<br />
	Savvy? Great. Now hit the gallery below (and if you're new to the <em>Defiance </em>scene, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/trion-updates-official-defiance-site-with-teaser-trailer/">go check out the trailer</a>) for some new screenshots of this innovative title and prepare yourself to fight for the planet. That, or die trying.<br />

<div>
	Nothing seems to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/08/carbine-studios-dev-blog-details-usability-testing/">stem the tide</a> of dev diaries flowing out of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCSoft</a>'s <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/carbine-studios">Carbine Studios</a>, and that's just fine by us. Today we have a new post from Carbine's art director Matt Mocarski regarding the visual style of their upcoming title, and which just so happens to include a sneak peek at a screenshot from the title's upcoming debut trailer (which you can see as the header to this post).<br />
	<br />
	According to Mocarski, the team began work on the project with a simple goal for the art: It had to be unique and iconic; something that would be instantly recognizable as belonging to Carbine's MMO. With that in mind, the artists began drawing on the collective influences of the team, specifically American and European comics and American and Japanese animation, and came together with an art style that would be unique and memorable for their future fantasy game. It took a few iterations, but eventually the team settled on what Mocarski describes as an illustrated and hand-crafted style. Judging by the still provided, we think it's going to be quite interesting to see the team's work in motion when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/28/ncsofts-carbine-studios-to-reveal-new-mmo-at-gamescom/">the game premieres at Gamescom next week</a>.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/10/sall-about-style-baby-carbine-studios-matt-mocarski-on-art-a/">S'all about style, baby: Carbine Studios' Matt Mocarski on art and design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST. There's also an embedded video (which you can view after the cut, below) if you're looking to get a few pointers for your own raiding party.<br />

Finally, check out the helpful how-to for those of you interested in designing your own legion cloak emblems, as there's a special emphasis on making logos with transparent backgrounds. All of these juicy details can be found at the official <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/news/community/eye-community-june"><em>Aion</em> website</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/aion-community-update-details-server-first-boss-kills-and-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aion community update details server-first boss kills and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/05/aion-community-update-details-server-first-boss-kills-and-more/">Aion community update details server-first boss kills and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. It seems like the <a href="http://www.fallout-on-line.com/"><em>Fallout Online</em></a> hype-machine is slowly grinding into gear, what with the recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/28/fallout-online-offers-up-a-large-faq/">FAQ update</a> and now word of some cryptic new artwork being sent to mailing list subscribers late last week. Destructoid has <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/fallout-online-starts-the-viral-marketing-178180.phtml">the scoop</a> on the email blast, which kicked off with a brief textual teaser before leading into the imagery.<br />
<br />
<span>"<em>There are many stories and many more tall tales about life in the wastelands, this is one of them</em>," read the notice.</span> In addition to artwork like the vista shown above, subscribers were sent images of a letter scrawled by a character named Les, who waxes on about the Menkey Butte Mine and a "Ragskin" named Fast Eddie.<br />
<br />

Sometimes you notice them and sometimes you don't, but the background touches in <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> are always there. They're little reminders that you're moving through a city full of people. The Rogue Isles has its share of shady billboards and decorations (including no-questions-asked investigators and a minion recruitment service), while Paragon City has law firms and socially-conscious advertisements about the Rikti. And Praetoria has propaganda for Emperor Cole... and against him. That's the crux of the now-concluded contest to declare your loyalty in artistic form for <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrogue"><em>Going Rogue</em></a>, and the winners of said contest <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/city_of_heroes_declare_your_lo_1.html">have been announced</a>.<br />
<br />
There are three winners in each category, for both Loyalist propaganda and Resistance subversion. Two of the pieces of Resistance graffiti and one of the Loyalist billboards have also been adopted by the developers -- they will be featured in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Going-Rogue/">Going Rogue</a></em>, albeit in a slightly-altered form. The gallery of winners showcases both the original submissions and the slight alterations made for the appearance in-game. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/City-of-Heroes/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> players who haven't yet picked a side -- or those who are just interested in seeing some nicely-done propaganda pieces -- should <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/city_of_heroes_declare_your_lo_1.html">head on over to take a look</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/winners-of-declare-your-loyalty-contest-announced-for-city-of/">Winners of "Declare your Loyalty" contest announced for City of Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 21:00:00 EST. <div align="left">While <a href="http://www.windstormstudios.com/">Windstorm Studios</a> has been very tight lipped regarding what they're currently working on, they certainly have been offering up a few glimpses into what looks to be a retro-future themed MMO they have in production.<br /><br />The art of the game has <a href="http://www.windstormstudios.com/news.html">recently been entrusted</a> to <a href="http://www.226prod.com/">226 Productions</a>, a Russian based art company that has done work on <em><a href="http://pirates.bethsoft.com/">Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow</a></em>, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_07">NBA '07</a></em>, and <em><a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/t/timeshift/">TimeShift</a></em>. 226 is no stranger to the IP that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/windstorm-studios">Windstorm</a> has been brewing -- some of the pre-production artwork was completed by them.<br /><br />As to what exactly Windstorm will bring to the MMO table remains to be seen, but if these pictures are any indication, it looks to be something fresh, exciting, and filled with laser shooting scooters.</div>

When it comes to an apocalypse, you might think that you could bang up some destroyed buildings, slap some dirt on them and call it a day. But as we learned from <a href="http://www.curse.com/blogs/fallenearth-en-news/archive/2009/09/21/fallen-earth-dev-journal-with-art-director-checkout-before-and-after-screenshots.aspx">a recent guest dev blog on Curse</a> with <a href="http://www.fallenearth.com"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a>'s Art Director, Chris Deavellar, there's a lot of work that goes into creating a believable, realistic apocalypse. Players who are currently finding their way in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Fallen-Earth/">Fallen Earth</a></em> will undoubtedly be glad to hear that graphical updates like the one above in the works, and will be coming to us down the road. Additionally, as part of the updates that they're working on, these new building formats and textures will help to reduce the memory needed to render all the original, legacy buildings. <br /><br />In all, it's a great post, offering up some frank <em>"making-of"</em> type information for those who are curious about how this indie studio is moving forward with their work on <em>Fallen Earth</em>. Also included are a series of <a href="http://www.curse.com/media/p/574030.aspx">interior</a> and <a href="http://www.curse.com/media/p/574025.aspx">exterior</a> <a href="http://www.curse.com/media/p/574029.aspx">images</a> showing before and <a href="http://www.curse.com/media/p/574028.aspx">after</a> - updates that will help to improve the overall look and feel of the game. For an apocalypse, we think it looks pretty cool, and can't wait until we ride into Embry and see all new, less memory-intensive buildings. <br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/27/fallen-earths-art-director-talks-about-updating-the-apocalypse/">Fallen Earth's art director talks about updating the apocalypse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 27 Sep 2009 12:00:00 EST. <div align="left">One of the last things coming out of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sdcc-09">Comic Con '09</a> is some of the tasty new artwork and the brand new trailer we've gotten from the <a href="http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net/"><em>Dungeon Fighter Online</em></a> team during our visit to their booth at the convention. The art is done in complete comic book style, setting up a bit more of the personalities behind <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/e3-2009-dungeon-fighter-online-impressions/">the main five characters</a> -- gunner, fighter, mage, priest, and slayer.<br /><br />We've also received word that this week will mark the start of the closed technical beta for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dungeon-fighter-online"><em>DFO</em></a>. Server load, network tests, and things of that sort will be the focus of this initial beta. Later will be another closed beta phase which will focus on game balancing and design, as well as player feedback.<br /><br />Also, Neople, the original developers of <em>Dungeon Fighter Online</em>, will be on hand to aid Nexon with the localization of the game to North American audiences. <br /> <strong>Massively: Is there any MMO that has influenced your work on <span style="font-style: italic;">Earth Eternal</span>, and if so how did it influence you? </strong><br /><br /> Alex Madrigal, Concept Artist: I've been pretty active with MMOs for about seven years now. I've played <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> the most, but I've spent a serious amount of time in <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> as well. I've dabbled in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>Everquest 2</em></a>, <a href="http://www.lineage2.com"><em>Lineage II</em></a> and most recently <a href="http://dragonica.iahgames.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Dragonica</span></a>. Artistically, I've picked something up from each of the games I've spent considerable amounts of time with. <br /><strong><br /> What <span style="font-style: italic;">Earth Eternal</span> race represents you the best and why? <br /></strong><br /> Alex: I'd have to say that I'm probably most like the Ursine. I'm big, tough and hairy. Also...not so much tough, but definitely cuddly! <br /><br /><strong>If you could pick out your favorite part of <span style="font-style: italic;">Earth Eternal</span>, what would it be and why? </strong><br /><br /> Alex: My monster designs. That will probably (definitely) come across as conceit, but the time spent with the team discussing, designing and fine tuning the monsters was probably the most fun I've had working on this game. To take something from a simply stated verbal concept and then see it grow through the stages of development is always exciting. Getting to draw strange things and seeing them show up in a 3D virtual space is a hoot. Plus it does my ego good when I hear people say that they think the designs are cool. And if you manage to find monsters you think aren't so cool - I didn't do those. [Laughs]<br /><br /><strong><img hspace="4" border="1" align="right" vspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/rotten225.jpg" alt="" />What has been the most difficult obstacle for you to overcome in your work on <span style="font-style: italic;">Earth Eternal</span>? </strong><br /><br /> Alex: Doing user interface work. Having come from an animation background, jumping headfirst into designing a UI was a hell of a hurdle. Dealing with a whole new set of technical limitations and rules was difficult at first. For my first UI, I'm pretty happy with the end result, but I prefer the pencil and paper/Photoshop route instead of shifting around tiny pixels. <br /><br /><strong>What has influenced your art style for <span style="font-style: italic;">Earth Eternal</span>? Why this art style?</strong><br /><br /> Alex: I wish I could say that I was on the ground floor to help decide the artistic style for the game, but I actually came on as the concept artist about a year after the game's development started. I've been following a style set by another group of artists, but I have taken the opportunity to slather it in a healthy coating of my own personal style when possible. I'm heavily influenced by European graphic novel artists, and I really enjoy classic fairy tale illustrations. Things with visual texture and very rhythmic line work. <span style="font-style: italic;">Earth Eternal</span> has rich lore and to me, it feels like a fairy tale world. I try to implement that kind of stuff wherever I can.<br /><br />Come back tomorrow for part two, when we get to speak with the lead writer, Matt Mihaly, and one of the programmers, Ryne Anderson!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/23/meet-the-sparkplay-media-team-part-one-pg-2/">Meet the Sparkplay Media team: Part One, pg. 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 23 Jul 2009 15:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.blizzard.com/blizzcon/?rhtml=y">Blizzcon</a> is this weekend, and journalists and bloggers the world over are descending upon California to report on everything from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/10/joystiq-hands-on-diablo-iii-and-the-wizard-class/"><em>Diablo 3</em> classes</a> to -- you guessed it -- <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>. <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/">MTV's Multiplayer blog</a> counts itself a member of that gaming press Horde, and in addition to your usual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzcon">Blizzcon</a> coverage, it <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/10/09/blizzard-photo-tour">visited Blizzard's headquarters</a> and took <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28516300@N04/sets/72157607889881060/">lots of photos</a>.<br /><br />The HQ has a museum, a movie theater, a gymnasium, and a bunch of other amenities, and they're all documented in Multiplayer's gallery. Social networking and virtual worlds are related technologies; they're both digital spaces where people can form and maintain relationships with one another. Social networking sites like <a href="http://www.myspace.com">MySpace</a> and <a href="http://www.facebook.com">Facebook</a> are commonly used to market products and services. MMOs are both products <em>and</em> services, so putting them on Facebook makes sense.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.realtimeworlds.com">Realtime Worlds</a> thinks so, anyway, as it has opened an <a href="http://www.new.facebook.com/pages/All-Points-Bulletin-APB/10139489470?ref=s&amp;refurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.new.facebook.com%2Fs.php%3Fref%3Dsearch%26init%3Dq%26q%3Dall%2Bpoints%2Bbulletin">official <em>APB </em>Facebook page</a> where it can hold contests, and post news and media, and where fans can converse about the game. While pages are often used as half-hearted attempts to keep brands visible, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/realtime-worlds">Realtime Worlds</a> is swinging for the fences by making its <a href="http://www.apb.com/"><em>APB</em></a> page an integral part of its public relations strategy.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.warcry.com/news/view/85892-APB-Facebook-Beta-a-Contest-OH-MY">WarCry talked to Realtime Worlds community manager Chris "Ulric" Dye about that decision</a>, and he described in detail what the company is trying to do and why it's trying to do it. It's an interesting read, and there are a couple more general game-related questions slipped in. Most of them are artfully dodged, though! Nevertheless, Dye announced a fan art contest. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> continues to reveal more of the world of <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com/">Champions Online</a></em> and tease us all with intriguing story elements for its more prominent superbeings. Included in this new series of images are comic book-style, wordless origin stories of Defender, Doctor Destroyer, Ironclad, Justiciar, and Menton. <br /><br />The sheer amount of information Cryptic is willing to share with its fans is heartening, especially since it's likely that we won't even see the launch until next year. Expect more content to come, including video of Jack Emmert discussing the <em>Champions</em> IP and how it differs from <em><a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/">City of Heroes</a></em>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-core-gallery-2/">Champions Online Main Gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-core-gallery-2/#4141403"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/resistance-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-core-gallery-2/#4141404"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/resistance-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-core-gallery-2/#4141405"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/resistance-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-core-gallery-2/#4141406"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/resistance-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/champions-online-core-gallery-2/#4141407"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/resistance-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/new-artwork-from-champions-online-reveals-character-origins/">New artwork from Champions Online reveals character origins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 10:30:00 EST. <div align="left">We don't spend too much time covering <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a>'s <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> here at Massively -- partly because news is sparse -- but that doesn't mean we're not interested. In fact, we're intrigued by the game's art direction. It has an eerie, fragmented, dream-like vibe that reminds us of the oldschool roleplaying-oriented game <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underlight"><em>Underlight</em>.</a> It also features lots and lots of wings, since all players and many NPCs can fly.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has released <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/us/media/concept_art/">four new works of concept art.</a> Check them out and you'll see what we mean. One of the items -- pictured above -- depicts one of the Balaur. The Balaur are fallen angels responsible for the sundering of the world. The other three items depict the Abyss, the setting for<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"> <em>Aion</em></a>'s endgame PvP encounters. Those have a bit of an <a href="http://www.wowwiki.com/Outland">Outland</a> vibe, what with the shattered earth floating in space and all.</div>

This is a bit different from some of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/new-champions-online-wallpapers-feature-wider-pixels/">previous stuff</a> though: you get to see the heroes and villains of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online/"><em>CO</em></a> in the way that heroes and villains are meant to be seen -- in comic form.<br /><br />The characters on show are the heroes Defender and Ironclad, and villains Doctor Destroyer and Menton, and the frames of the comics depict their origins. A <a href="http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=5506">forum thread has been provided</a> for any feedback on the artwork, and so far it is overwhelmingly positive. The character causing the most divided opinions is Menton, whose exposed and enlarged brain seems to leave people on both sides of the fence. For the record, we think you look fine Menton -- now please don't mess with our free will.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/check-out-the-champions-online-stars-in-comic-form/">Check out the Champions Online stars in comic form</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. <p>Adam and Freya Chapman have run <a href="http://www.threadsafeinc.com">Threadsafe</a>, a direct-to-garment printing business, for the last two years, and have managed to pull in a number of <a href="http://threadsafeinc.com/clients.html">corporate clients</a>. They provide printing services for <a href="http://www.bountee.com/">Bountee</a> -- a custom t-shirt site on the internet -- and shirts for <a href="http://www.freaklabelmusic.com/">Freaklabel music</a>, just to name two. Now, in conjunction with Adam's brother Keith, they're opening <a href="http://www.clan-gear.com">Clan Gear</a>, a direct-to-garment printing outlet for gamers, where the focus on the printing is your artwork, your character, and your designs.<br /><br />Here's the rub: while Threadsafe has been in business for a couple of years now, Clan Gear is just starting up, and they're still working on their <a href="http://www.clan-gear.com/index.php?p=9">proof catalog</a>. While you can keep up with the advances in technology (and the company itself) via <a href="http://www.clan-gear.com/forum/">Clan Gear's official forums</a>, the best way to see what they've done in the past is to check out Threadsafe's commercial customers and the clans that have already availed themselves of Clan Gear's printing. Current samples up on their web page include shirts for <a href="http://www.marshmallowunderground.com/">Marshmallow Underground</a> -- a <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">World of Warcraft</a></em> guild with over 300 members -- and <a href="http://www.guildsunited.net/">Guilds United</a>, a coalition of ten <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wow">WoW</a></em> guilds.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/clan-gear-guild-clothing-for-the-masses/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Clan Gear: guild clothing for the masses</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/clan-gear-guild-clothing-for-the-masses/">Clan Gear: guild clothing for the masses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 19:00:00 EST. <br />To follow <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/age-of-conan-product-developer-interview-with-gameplay-video/">our earlier post</a> about the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> press event, here is a Gallery full of artwork given to us by the <em>AoC</em> artists themselves. We're talking screenshots, renders, and concept art, all of which look outstanding. It's clear that one of the mandates for the art direction was to go for a core of realism in all things, from building design to creature physiognomy. Certainly the fantastical elements are in force, but they're tempered by a solid aesthetic that really appeals to those who aren't into the cartoony, oversaturated palette of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">World of Warcraft</a> </em>and the like. <br /><br />And, in fact, I'd be willing to bet that the artists took some inspiration directly from the pulp novels themselves. There's an almost indefinable quality here that hearkens back to those great old covers. This is a well-executed strategy that will keep players fully immersed in the world, and it's all absolutely gorgeous. Without further ado, have at it!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-artwork/">Age of Conan Artwork</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-artwork/#529927"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/12/thirstydoginn_900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Thirsty Dog Inn" title="Thirsty Dog Inn" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-artwork/#529926"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/12/gore4_900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="gore 4" title="gore 4" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-artwork/#529925"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/12/yeti_900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="yeti" title="yeti" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-artwork/#529924"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/12/guardian_900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="guardian" title="guardian" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-artwork/#529923"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/12/gore1_900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="gore 1" title="gore 1" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/age-of-conan-artwork-for-your-drooling-pleasure/">Age of Conan artwork for your drooling pleasure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 12:15:00 EST. Whatever you celebrate this time of year, December seems to be when the majority of gifts are exchanged among friends and family. Everyone has their own idea of what is and isn't appropriate in a gift-giving manner, and it's difficult to decide what's best to give, and what we most want to receive. Well, that's where we come in.<br /><br />We have the good fortune of having two of the fae here -- one from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-villains">Rogue Isles</a>, and one from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes">Paragon City</a> -- to share with us their views of appropriate gifts for those of you who are playing in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s realms this holiday season. Their selections range from cost-free, in-game offerings up to something you can tuck under the tree ... or the computer desk, as the case may be.

Ever regret not sending in your work? Well, here's your chance, because <a href="ftp://ftp.cityofheroes.com/fanzine/COHfanzine8X10new.pdf">Issue #0</a> of the new <em>City of Heroes</em> <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9639993&amp;an=0&amp;page=0#Post9639993">Fanzine</a> was released today.<br /><br />For those of you who may be concerned that this publication is replacing the City Scoop, fear not: the fanzine was never intended to replace the scoop, but to add to the lore and backstory of the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cox">CoX</a></em> universe. Then, too, the fanzine will only be coming out quarterly, so you'll have to rely on the Scoop ... and Massively, of course ... for timely news about the Rogue Isles and Paragon City.<br /><br />So pull out your pens and digital tablets, and <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/community/fansubmission_guidelines.html">share your stories and visions</a> of the digital world all of our alts inhabit. We're looking forward to seeing what you have to offer. <br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/fury"><em>Fury</em></a> seems to be getting a drubbing in the game critics press lately; I've just started the 10-day trial, so I'll know for myself how it all pans out, but one of the things that struck me most about starting up was the introductory story sequence. I'm one of those people who finds 'behind the scenes' footage sometimes more interesting than the finished product, so I'm always checking out 'making of' bits in the media.<br /><br />The artwork on display for the opening intro for <em>Fury</em> looks like the kind of artwork I'm talking about; the rendering is about mood and color, and in the concept art style, where it's not necessarily detail-driven, but has that soft-focus quality that I find far more evocative. Whether or not I find lasting value in gameplay, I appreciated the graphics here so much I wanted to share them with you. Enjoy!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-art-of-fury/">The Art of Fury</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-art-of-fury/#482850"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/11/screen03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-art-of-fury/#482849"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/11/screen02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-art-of-fury/#482848"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/11/screen01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-art-of-fury/#475184"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/11/screen04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-art-of-fury/#475191"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2007/11/screen09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/the-opening-art-of-fury/">The opening art of Fury</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 07:04:00 EST. It's not just the consistently high quality of the writing, the in-depth retrospectives of the individuals <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9533523&amp;page=0&amp;vc=1">Behind the Mask</a>, or the <a href="http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=0&amp;Number=9533553&amp;page=0&amp;vc=1">artwork</a>, but it's all of those elements combined with the passion put into it by the people behind the project. The pages show that real thought is put into layout and leading, that each person cares about the final product, and that everyone wants to make -- and succeeds in making -- the Scoop fun to read.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/03/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CoH's City Scoop drops player written news</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/03/extra-extra-read-all-about-it/">CoH's City Scoop drops player written news</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 03 Nov 2007 17:30:00 EST.
