If you were a follower of the Xfire Debate Club before you'll be glad to hear that they're <a href="http://www.xfire.com/cms/xf_debate/">starting the Debate Club back up again</a>, as of today. That's right, at 5pm EST / 2pm PST (22:00 GMT) today, you can join a group of MMO journalists, developers, and other industry insiders as we debate the ins and outs of free to play vs subscription models.<br /><br />Some of the many points that will undoubtedly come up over the course of the Xfire debate are:<br /><span class="big">
<ul>
    <li>Free sounds good, but what are the trade-offs?</li>
    <li>Does quality or quantity matter more?</li>
    <li>Is one business model more sustainable than the other?</li>
    <li>With Free 2 Play games becoming such a driving force, where do you see MMOs going in general?</li>
</ul>
</span>I'll be there to speak as part of the <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> team, but we'll be fielding some questions from those who show up to participate as well. Among the other guests are Cody Bye from <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com">Ten Ton Hammer</a>, Randall Price from <a href="http://www.arenanet.com/">ArenaNet</a>, Arend St&uuml;hrmann from <a href="http://ccpgames.com/">CCP</a>, Christian Wehrlin from <a href="http://games-masters.com/">Games Masters</a>, Josh Sell from <a href="http://www.aeriagames.com/">Aeria Games</a>, Adam Mersky from <a href="http://www.turbine.com">Turbine</a>, <span class="big">Fred White</span> from <a href="http://www.ynkinteractive.com/">YNK Interactive</a>, and <span class="big">Tony Colafrancesco</span> from <a href="http://www.mmolife.org/">MMO Life</a> as special guest moderator. <br /><br />With such a great group of panelists to debate this with, it should prove to be an interesting and lively discussion. So be sure to <a href="http://www.xfire.com/download/now/">grab a copy of the Xfire client</a> if you haven't already, and come by to discuss the future of MMOs with us!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/xfire-free-to-play-vs-subscription-mmo-debate-today/">Xfire free to play vs subscription MMO debate today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 16:00:00 EST. The latter two have been made possible through the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP Games</a> partnership with <a href="http://www.transgaming.com/">TransGaming Technologies</a>, via their <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cider">Cider</a> and Cedega technology, respectively. Unfortunately, while the Mac client has attracted (and retained) a number of users, the same cannot be said for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> Linux client. We received word from affected players over the weekend that CCP is dropping support for the Linux client, but it's official as of this morning. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-whisper">CCP Whisper</a> stated, <em>"I am sorry to announce that from the 10th of March onwards CCP will no longer be officially supporting the Linux operating system. The low amount of users of the Linux client did not justify the degree of additional complexity having three operating systems imposes on our development and release schedules."</em> He states that he and CCP Games are fully aware of the disappointment this will cause but the resources the company has devoted to Linux support could be put to better use elsewhere, in ways that benefit more players.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/ccp-games-drops-linux-client-support-for-eve-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CCP Games drops Linux client support for EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/ccp-games-drops-linux-client-support-for-eve-online/">CCP Games drops Linux client support for EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 13:00:00 EST. The interview focused on two facets of the game: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE's</span></a> economy, and the fact that with other sci-fi MMO titles like <a href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com/index.php "><span style="font-style: italic;">Jumpgate Evolution</span></a> on the way, <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> may face increased competition in the coming months and years. <br /><br />CCP's Lead Economist, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eyjolfur-gudmundsson">Dr. Eyj&oacute;lfur Gu&eth;mundsson</a> talked with Strategy Informer about the game's economic depth, which dwarfs other titles, despite having a subscriber base that's a fraction of what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> enjoys. The interview touched on the possibilities of new trade hubs being established by players over time, the scarcity of certain technologies and their increasing prices, and how the market moves in general. However, the main aspects of the game he discussed were the player-run financial services that have sprung up in <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>, what the community has come up with on its own.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/strategy-informer-interviews-ccp-games-about-the-future-of-eve-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Strategy Informer interviews CCP Games about the future of EVE Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/strategy-informer-interviews-ccp-games-about-the-future-of-eve-o/">Strategy Informer interviews CCP Games about the future of EVE Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 20:00:00 EST. St&uuml;hrmann says that there is a solid core of players who've made factional warfare their livelihood, with over 40,000 players that enlisted in the first few weeks. St&uuml;hrmann also spoke about the effect of factional warfare on non-participants. War can invigorate an economy and this idea holds true in New Eden as well. Factional Warfare in the Empyrean Age has had an impact on the market, particularly with tech I ship and module production.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/eve-online-video-interview-maps-coming-evolution-of-the-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online video interview maps coming evolution of the game</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/27/eve-online-video-interview-maps-coming-evolution-of-the-game/">EVE Online video interview maps coming evolution of the game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Aug 2008 09:00:00 EST.
