<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/"><em>Allods Online's</em></a> mascots are back for <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2012/05/13/the-troll-crab-continue-their-adventures/">another humorous video</a>, as Troll and Crab try their hands (claws) at making potions. It doesn't quite go as expected, but it's hard to blame Crab for what happens (he's just an earnest little guy). This is all to promote the game's newest update, patch 3.0.2, which promises to be a savory concoction for players to quaff. Over the weekend, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato/">gPotato</a> <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/minisite/">opened up a new mini-site</a> to promote the update and has since posted several new articles highlighting the changes.<br />

Some of patch 3.0.2's big selling points include <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2012/05/11/patch-3-0-02-preview-new-alchemy-system/">a revamp</a> of the Alchemy profession, the ability for <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/news/2012/05/11/patch-3-0-02-preview-new-alchemy-system/">pets to do the looting</a>, a neat-sounding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/allods-onlines-patch-3-0-1-bringing-mentor-system-new-astral-s/">mentor system</a>, a new skirmish called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/allods-online-to-add-questing-features-new-skirmish-and-raid-b/">The Deserted Farm</a>, a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/allods-onlines-patch-3-0-1-bringing-mentor-system-new-astral-s/">free-for-all treasure hunting space</a>, a new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/allods-online-to-add-questing-features-new-skirmish-and-raid-b/">raid boss</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/27/allods-online-to-add-questing-features-new-skirmish-and-raid-b/">better questing</a>.<br />

Patience, they say, is a virtue -- and no one is more patient than the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> community. This patience will be tested once more as the imminent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ffxiv-patch-1.21/">1.21 patch</a> has been delayed until March 9th to accommodate further work and testing.<br />
<br />
If someone is to blame, it's Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/naoki-yoshida/">Naoki Yoshida</a>, who admits that "the sheer volume" of his suggestions prompted the delay. But it will be worth it, he promises.<br />

In a new producer's letter</a>, Yoshida hypes the patch and in particular its changes to magic casting. These changes will be "almost identical" to what the game will see when it hits 2.0. He's extremely excited to announce that adjustments to alchemy and culinary professions -- the medicines and food, specifically -- are almost complete. Finally, he reports that the team is deep into testing the two new instanced raids that are coming with the patch.<br />

All right, folks, it's that time again. No, not happy hour. That's not until later. It's <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a> time, so take a swig of the most potent nearby beverage and sit tight. Last week, you folks voted for me to give <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>'s dungeon-crawling a go so that I could have a sample of party mechanics and do something that wasn't a levequest.<br />

However, after standing around for a couple of hours on Sunday and a few more hours on Monday, screaming my lungs out in Ul'Dah asking for a group, I came up empty-handed. The vast majority of parties I saw being advertised were for higher-level content (mostly level 30 to 40+), and I'm still sitting pretty at level 10 and change. So what did I do with my playtime instead? Well, I took the first runner-up (botany and alchemy) and went with that. And what did I glean from choppin' trees and mixin' chemicals? If you're looking for something new to do in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eden-eternal">Eden Eternal</a></em> aside from killing monsters and stockpiling phat lewt, look no further than the mid-September content update. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aeria-games">Aeria Games</a> has just put out a press release detailing the patch, and the highlights include the new Anuran race along with a brand-new crafting system.<br />
<br />
Racial special abilities will also be making an appearance in the new patch, and they're tied into the new tradeskill mechanics. Characters at level 30 and above can participate in Gemcrafting (for Humans), Engineering (for Zumi), and Alchemy (for Anurans) to create a multitude of useful items including gear, potions, and dyes.<br />
<br />
The tradeskill goodness doesn't stop there, though, as players at level 20 and above are free to set up their own personal shops in the town of Aven. Finally, two new NPCs are being added to <em>Eden Eternal</em>, and Professor Koss gives timed XP boosts while Assistant Teren gifts players with different fortune bags throughout the day. Welcome to the world of<em> <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a></em> crafting, where frustration and despair are produced right alongside daggers, hauberks, and frillneck sausage. Where more than one Deava has left the crafting station and flung himself from the Sky Canal in Sanctum to the depths below... wait, maybe that was just me.<br />

Between more attempts at a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/wings-over-atreia-miragents-let-there-be-pants/">hot heart of magic craft</a> and scrambling to gather enough material to inch my way up the skill ladder towards mastery, crafting has consumed my hours and thoughts over the past couple of weeks. It has also left me questioning my sanity and losing just about every kinah I had saved up. So why craft?<br />
<br />
It is true what they say: Some players live for crafting, while others have crafting forced upon them. Prior to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion</a></em> I leaned toward the former, but tales of the cost and woes of failed crafts squelched any desires to craft early on. Then the fates conspired against me and I there I was, pan in hand. Somehow the pain of that experience must have dulled because I started another. Why, oh why?<br />

It's time for another entry in <a href="http://enmasse.com">En Masse Entertainment's</a> community play diary <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/community-play-diary">series</a>, and this week finds Jason "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jason-mical">BrotherMagneto</a>" Mical and Evan "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/evan-berman">Scapes</a>" Berman exploring the human city of Velika and its outlying provinces.<br />
<br />
Velika is one of the initial stopovers for new characters after leaving the Isle of Dawn, and the city serves as a quest hub, a place to learn about <a href="http://tera-online.com"><em>TERA's</em></a> crafting system, and a vast fantasy-scape rife with exploration opportunities. The city is so vast, in fact, that Scapes points out the city teleporter, "<em>a rotating contraption made of gears and magic that will port you to distant corners fo the town for a small fee</em>."<br />
<br />
The diary goes on to mention the crafting introduction quests, during which players may choose from the weaponsmithing, armorsmithing, tailoring, leatherworking, or alchemy disciplines. The world of Arad is coming under fire beginning on April 13th as monsters from across the realm will unite to lay waste to various cities and towns in <a href="http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net/"><em>Dungeon Fighter Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/act-viii-under-siege">Act VIII: Under Siege</a> update. Every Thursday and Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PDT, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dungeon-fighter-online"><em>Dungeon Fighter Online</em></a> players will need to team up to repel the hordes bent on wreaking havoc and destroying all in their path.<br />
<br />
<em>DFO</em> heroes will be handsomely rewarded for successfully driving off the beasties, while failure in the city defense initiative means that NPCs will deny trade and repair opportunities for a time. Additionally, Act VIII brings the ability for max-level players to choose professions (which in turn grants access to skills such as alchemy, enchanting, disassembly, and animation).<br />

Players will also be able to increase reputation and status via a new system that involves gifting NPCs with various items to build friendship and trust. While not everyone is a math or statistics geek, there's a certain intriguing quality to MMO stats. Whenever we post statistics for games, there are inevitably discussions on concurrent users, paid subscribers, and overall registered accounts. Unfortunately, free-to-play games like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Frogster/">Frogster</a>'s <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com"><em>Runes of Magic</em></a> don't really lend themselves to discussions of subscriptions vs. registered accounts since it has no monthly fee. Nevertheless, the game still provides some interesting statistics.<br />
<br />
According to a release sent earlier today, Frogster has posted a handful of curious stats that are sure to pique the interest of those who love to dissect MMO minutiae. Over the last two years, 6,657,370 characters have stepped into <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Runes-of-Magic/">Runes of Magic</a></em>. Mages are an incredibly popular class, with 2.2 million characters, and there's a tie at 650,000 characters created for both Rogues and Warriors. Apparently, the Priest/Mage dual class is a highly popular combo for players; and Priest takes secondary class of choice at 350,000, followed by Warriors with 150,000. Over three million characters serve as Herbalists, with 1.1 million players dabbling in Alchemy.<br />
<br />
English-speaking servers have seen 3,505,269 quests turned in and 4,622 guilds created. Groups in the game have taken the Demon Lord down 4,521 times and have wiped the floor with Erekat III almost three times more. Raksha is still the one to beat, according to Frogster's metrics, which suggest that boss has only been downed 182 times on the highest difficulty. Finally, no raid would be complete without silly pets along for a screenshot -- we're told that there are over 100,000 rune pets tagging along with players. In all, it's certainly an interesting set of statistics, if a bit random. At long last, a bit of information about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA's</em></a> crafting and gathering mechanics (yes it has them!) has surfaced. The news takes the form of a player-written guide over at <a href="http://www.terafans.com/topic/5995-crafting-and-gathering-in-kcbt4/?s=8c3828e92129f4a49ce9f21d1045b5c7">TERAfans</a>, and it features a run-down on resources, professions, and raw materials. As it turns out, players can opt to pursue alchemy, armor and weaponsmithing, carpentry, or tailoring and leatherworking professions. <br />

<a href="http://www.nexon.net/">Nexon America</a> brings word of a new update for <a href="http://mabinogi.nexon.net"><em>Mabinogi</em></a>, their free-to-play fantasy life MMORPG that boasts over one million registered players. The patch, called <a href="http://mabinogi.nexon.net/News/View.aspx?boardNo=101&amp;contentNo=007xJ">Goddess of Light</a>, brings a new city into the world of Erinn, as well as jousting competitions, wine making contests, fashion contests, and an auction house.<br />
<br />
Players can now explore Tara, the capital city of the Allech Kingdom, to take part in all of the aforementioned events. Additionally, players can commission an in-game NPC to draw likenesses of their characters for display in player housing, personal shops, or on clothing.<br />

Finally, the Goddess of Light update introduces a new transformation ability known as the Awakening of Light, as well as new alchemy skills including Frozen Blast, Rain Casting, and Metal Conversion. The free-to-play game has just added several new features including three new Shadow Missions which find players teaming up for death matches, battling Fomor monsters and collecting the ingredients that they protect. Additionally, the game update allows players to acquire two new Alchemy skills: Flame Burst and Sand Burst. The former is used for close range attacks while the latter allows players to temporarily disable opponents by blinding them with sand.<br />

In real life, alchemy was an early scientific movement that wound up stumbling upon a few concepts important to modern science.  In <a href="http://mabinogi.nexon.net/"><em>Mabinogi</em></a>, it's at the heart of the most recent update as a mixture of both science and magic, allowing characters access to new skills and abilities through research and magical prowess.  The <a href="http://mabinogi.nexon.net/Notice/View.aspx?boardNo=100&amp;contentNo=006Ba&amp;pageIndex=1">Alchemist update</a> for the game has just been released into the wild, and brought with it a new form of gameplay, the aforementioned Alchemist abilities, and not one but two different holiday events for players to enjoy.<br />

Within the new zone, Taillteann, players will be able to explore both the Alchemist's House to research components of the new skills, or take part in the game's new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/04/mabinogi-adds-shadow-missions/">Shadow Missions</a>. How does it impact your ability to assess the state of <em>EVE</em>'s economy, and are there assumptions you've made in the past that you need to reassess now?</strong><br /><br />It's a good thing that you mentioned the starbase exploit because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/ccp-games-releases-findings-on-eve-starbase-exploit-investigatio/">we are in the final stages of creating a very thorough dev blog on that</a>, which will hopefully be published very soon. [Note: this interview was conducted just prior to the release of the investigation's findings.]<br /><br />There are certain things with the POS exploit that made it very difficult to detect. You basically needed to be able to go to that particular starbase and look at it, look at the setup and so on. It was difficult for us to detect it otherwise, except from the code once we knew what we were looking for.<br /><br />From a market perspective the <em>EVE</em> economy has become so big that in order for you to impact the market you will really have to have large quantities. But at times there are bottlenecks in terms of supply. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-greyscale">CCP Greyscale</a> cites the example of how the limited number of T2 blueprint originals (BPOs) decreased availability of items while driving up prices. <a href="http://www.ccpgames.com">CCP</a> stepped in by introducing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/invention">'invention'</a>, where players can attempt to create higher-end items via R&amp;D, eliminating the issue of supply and normalizing prices. <br /><br />CCP Greyscale's <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&amp;bid=601">latest dev blog is called "Alchemy"</a> and looks at the newest issue they've identified with <em>EVE's </em>economy, the inflated price of rare moon minerals. Greyscale says, <em>"In particular, two rare moon minerals - dysprosium and (to a lesser extent) promethium - are becoming ever-more expensive as increased demand puts pressure on a limited supply. Considering that Alchemy in its current state is completely broken (when we say broken, we mean: it crashes your client when you try and do it), this message is certainly long overdue.<br /><br />While he was unwilling to commit to a specific time frame, he did go through a fairly comprehensive list of changes. Alchemists will get their most pressing bugs patched later this week, and will also start seeing alchemical ingredients dropping off of caster mobs. Architects will purportedly get new abilities to supplement combat (related to siege combat perhaps?), but no specifics were mentioned. Both Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths will see some new blue recipes from vendors and world drops. And finally, Resource and Building regions will be fleshed out more to make them full of NPCs and enemies, instead of the relatively barren areas they are currently.
