Early bird Daevas looking to get a head start on their Wednesday were thwarted by the patch gods this morning as <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> servers were briefly offline. The good news is that the downtime was in service of the new 2.1 patch (or more accurately, the second portion of it). Today's update shines the spotlight on crafting, and citizens of Atreia will be enjoying bonus crafting, essence-tapping, and aether-tapping gains courtesy of the Artisan Expo event that runs through February 2nd.<br />
<br />
As for the patch itself, it features a bevy of tradeskilling tweaks, chief among them reduced material requirements for high level recipes, increased drop rates on some rare Balic materials, and an increased chance at rare gathering drops. The patch also addresses the long-standing issue of the Balaur taking over Kysis Fortress during normal siege times. Check out <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft's</a> <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=492&amp;amp;page=">announcement post</a> as well as the <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Patch+Notes+2.1.0.5">full patch notes</a> for all the details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/26/aion-kicks-off-2-1-0-5-artisans-expo-event/">Aion kicks off 2.1.0.5, Artisan's Expo event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. Part two of the <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> 2.1 update is on the way to servers across Atreia, and the dev team has posted the official <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Patch+Notes+2.1.0.5">2.1.0.5 patch notes</a> to the game's website. The build debuted on the public test servers yesterday and is scheduled to take a bow on the live servers next Wednesday, January 26th. <br />
<br />
The second half of the 2.1 patch focuses on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> crafting, and many new recipes are included in the mix. <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> has also upped the drop rates for many crafting materials (including desirable Balaur components like hearts and balic items). Your chances of snagging a "greater" version of the resources farmed from harvesting nodes have also been increased, and many crafting quests will see reduced difficulty (including the wince-inducing expert crafting quests as well as the Miragent Holy Templar and Fenris Fangs quests).<br />
<br />
The 2.1.0.5 patch also brings a number of tweaks to instances, NPCs, and items, and you can see the full list of updates via the <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Patch+Notes+2.1.0.5">official website</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/21/aion-2-1-0-5-update-tweaks-crafting-difficulty/">Aion 2.1.0.5 update tweaks crafting difficulty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 09:00:00 EST. The month-long rifting experiment begun by <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> in early December has apparently given the <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> devs enough data to continue with a trial aimed at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/aion-experimenting-with-temporary-rifting-changes/">revisiting the decision</a> to nerf the PvP mechanic with last fall's 2.0 update. Players were recently asked to complete in-game surveys relating to the new changes (which boiled to down a removal of Heiron/Beluslan protections and changes to the large protective defender buffs), and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> reports that the majority of survey participants responded favorably to the change.<br />
<br />
In a post on the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> website, NCsoft says it will <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=484&amp;page=">continue the rifting trial</a> "<em>a few more weeks</em>," and the devs will also tweak lower level player protection in Morheim and Eltnen. Finally, a new player survey will be sent out and the rifting protections will be "<em>restored to their previous levels</em>" while feedback is collected and analyzed.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/ncsoft-planning-more-aion-rifting-tweaks/">NCsoft planning more Aion rifting tweaks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. After failing to proc master crafting and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/20/wings-over-atreia-miragents-let-there-be-pants/">miragent armor</a> recipes on multiple occasions, <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> players naturally gravitate towards superstition, luck, and the equivalent of in-game urban legends in order to deal with the nightmare that is high-level crafting in the world of Atreia. One of those legends concerns the supposed effects of a full Divine Power (DP) bar on crafting success. This particular myth is thoroughly debunked in the second installment of Victor Shugo's <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Victor+Shugo%E2%80%99s+Aion+Lab%3A++Myth+Breakers+Edition+Part+2"><em>Aion</em> Lab: Myth Breakers</a>, an ongoing series that provides statistical data regarding some of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> mechanics.<br />
<br />
In addition to laying the crafting DP myth to rest, this edition examines the loot drop rates for Draupnir Cave and Commander Bakarma and also provides a success rate table for level 50 and 60 manastones. So the next time you shake a fist at the Seraphim lords over a failed socketing attempt, rest assured that statistically speaking, you're bound to do better next time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/aion-myth-breakers-examines-crafting-dp-and-manastones/">Aion Myth Breakers examines crafting DP and manastones</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST. Happy <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Solorius+Festival">Solorius</a> Festival, Daevas! Yes, the Atreian equivalent of Christmas is back, and you can join the ongoing <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> celebration through January 5th. You'll find new quests in both Sanctum and Pandaemonium, as well as rewards that include decorative hats, gift bundles, and buff consumables. <br />
<br />
Mid-winter and New Year's marks the <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/New+Year+Event+2010-2011">Year of the Ribbit</a> celebration, and festivities include even more quests and rewards (including new ribbit outfit pieces). The party starts December 22nd and lasts through January 12th.<br />
<br />
Finally, <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> is turning on the double XP spigot again, this time in honor of Atreia's crafters. Friday, December 17th through Monday, December 20th is a prime time for catching up on any artisan activities you may have been neglecting, as double XP for crafting, essence-tapping, and aether-tapping will be in full effect.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/ncsoft-hypes-aion-double-crafting-xp-and-holiday-events/">NCsoft hypes Aion double crafting XP and holiday events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 11:00:00 EST. Rifting is a sore spot for many <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> players. On the one hand, some folks no doubt felt that the mechanic was intrusive and forced PvP on people who simply wanted to quest, gather, and otherwise PvE. On the other hand, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/wings-over-atreia-to-rift-or-not-to-rift-that-is-the-question/">drastic changes</a> introduced in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/assault-on-balaurea"><em>Assault on Balaurea</em></a> expansion all but killed most of the rifting in the game, causing some to question <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft's</a> all-or-nothing approach.<br />
<br />
Starting today, the devs are experimenting with a month-long trial designed to bring an element of risk back to Atreia and also strike a balance between rifting and PvE. The protective buffs placed on homeland defenders will remain in place for the low-level Morheim and Eltnen zones but will be significantly reduced. Protection buffs for defenders in the higher-level Heiron and Beluslan zones are going away entirely. What does this mean for you? In a nutshell, you'll have an easier time completing those spy quests that have been clogging your journal for weeks, and you'd also best keep an eye on your radar for incoming reds.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/aion-experimenting-with-temporary-rifting-changes/">Aion experimenting with temporary rifting changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. Time to dust off your wings, former Daevas, as you're invited back to the world of Atreia on <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft's</a> dime. If your account was inactive as of December 1st (and you've got a retail code applied and haven't been banned), you're eligible to play <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> for free through 8:00 a.m. PST on December 13th. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has also extended the double XP period for the entire duration of the reactivation event (as opposed to two weekend periods). Soul healing discounts of 99% will still happen on the weekend as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/double-your-pleasure-with-aion-double-xp/">originally announced</a>. Finally, instance timers have been considerably reduced. For example, Kromede's Trial now features a four-hour lockout timer (in place of the usual 22). Check your timers with the /checkentry command for more details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/03/ncsoft-reactivating-aion-accounts-doubling-xp/">NCsoft reactivating Aion accounts, doubling XP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Dec 2010 12:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.aiononline.com">Aion's</a> been getting a decent amount of press this fall, first for September's <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/assault-on-balaurea">Assault on Balaurea</a> expansion and lately due to the uproar surrounding the 2.1 patch. Among other things, 2.1 substantially increased the game's loot drop rates, leading to huzzahs on one side of the aisle and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/22/wings-over-atreia-easy-button/">raised eyebrows</a> on the other.<br />
<br />
Not to be outdone, <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> producer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/chris-hager">Chris Hager</a> recently posted an open letter on the official <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> website, summarizing both the aforementioned changes and hinting at a few things to come for the world of Atreia. Hager gives a heads up regarding the final day for the free character transfers that have been ongoing since the summer. January 5th is last call, so make sure you've got your Elyos or Asmo where you want him. <br />
<br />
Hager also mentions the fact that <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> is taking steps to increase account security, an issue that has plagued <em>Aion</em> since its launch in 2009. "<em>We are stepping up our efforts and introducing a new secondary PIN system to </em>Aion<em> that will provide an additional layer of security to our players. This service will go live on December 1, 2010, and we will post a full FAQ in the coming days explaining exactly how it will work</em>," he writes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/23/aion-producer-letter-talks-account-security-transfers/">Aion producer letter talks account security, transfers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 20:00:00 EST. Amidst all the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/g-star-2010">G-Star</a> news coming out this week, as well as <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion's</em></a> own upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/double-your-pleasure-with-aion-double-xp/">double XP</a> bonanza, you might have missed a fairly significant gameplay change that <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> has slipped onto the live servers. In a very brief <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=435&amp;page=">news blurb</a> on the official site (which links to an image graphic hosted on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ncsoftwest/5188059193/lightbox/">Flickr</a>), the Korean MMO developer answers the question that many Daevas have been asking of late, namely, what are the new siege times.<br />
<br />
As it turns out, they're quite different and will no doubt affect Abyss PvP in numerous ways. For example, prime time fortress sieges used to happen in a three-hour window, which pretty much meant that if you committed to attacking or defending, you missed out on Dredgion groups and basically any other content going on for that particular night. Now, the siege timers are staggered. In addition to the timers being reduced to two hours, there's also an hour block in between, which should give players time to do things other than siege on any given night.<br />
<br />
Additionally, the previous fortress vulnerabilities were a convoluted mess, with a mixture of upper and lower forts going on at once. Now, the vulnerable forts will be on a single layer, and there will also be five vulnerable forts simultaneously as opposed to three. This should lead to new strategies, as the zerg will no longer be able to bum-rush three locations at once, and there will theoretically be more sustained fighting going throughout the Abyss.<br />

Thinking of dusting off one of your Daevas? If you've got a long-neglected alt, if your main has stalled on the cusp of level 55, or if you've just been away from the world of Atreia altogether, you'll probably want to take advantage of <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion's</em></a> upcoming double experience weekends. <br />
<br />
From December 3rd through December 6th (beginning and ending at 12:00 p.m. PST on both days), you can double your pleasure with double XP on both mobs and quests. If that's not enough, you can also enjoy 99% off soul healing costs from December 4th to December 5th (12:00 a.m. PST - 11:59 p.m. PST) as well as December 11th to December 12th (at the same time slot). <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> is the lucky recipient of "<em>the single biggest change ever implemented by </em><a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a><em> across its entire portfolio of games</em>." Version 2.1 is hitting the Public Test Server (PTS) today, with a launch date for the live shards currently scheduled for November 17th. What's so special about 2.1, you're probably asking?<br />
<br />
In a nutshell, loot, and lots of it. More specifically, significantly increased drop rates are the order of the day. Now, we've heard the jokes as well. "Significant" means an increase from .01 to .02 percent, right? Wrong, as this time <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> means business. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> devs have offered up some specific statistics via press release, and you'll want to check out the tables after the cut for all the details. <br />

If you've spent much time in the lands of Atreia, you're probably familiar with Beshmundir's Temple and the named bosses contained therein that players often farm for loot. Over a period of 20 Perilous Path Temple runs, testers collected 138 total loot items. Of these, 121 were fabled quality (including wings), and 17 were eternal. Similarly, NCsoft testers cataloged 20 runs through the famed Dark Poeta dungeon, recording all loot items acquired from Spiritmaster Atmach to Brigade General Anuhart. A total of 68 fabled items dropped, which averages out to 3.4 per run. This was also sans the final boss, so the actual numbers will likely be higher.<br />
<br />
Finally, NCsoft is also gifting players with the new <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Adventurer%E2%80%99s+Guide"><em>Aion</em> Adventure Guide</a>. According to the press release, the guide will "<em>give players advice on where to find level-appropriate in-game content that will help with progression and reward them with items along the way. Crafted in-game messages and guides let players know where to go to find game content (quests, instances) that help progress them to the next level and give them hints on how to use new areas, such as the Abyss, and systems, such as Stigma Stones to their advantage</em>."<br />
<br />
Don't forget to fly past the cut for a detailed breakdown of the Beshmundir Temple runs in table format.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/11/ncsoft-reveals-juicy-details-on-aion-2-1-item-drop-rates-substa/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft reveals juicy details on Aion 2.1, item drop rates substantially increased</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/11/ncsoft-reveals-juicy-details-on-aion-2-1-item-drop-rates-substa/">NCsoft reveals juicy details on Aion 2.1, item drop rates substantially increased</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 13:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> is teaming up with <a href="http://www.alienware.com/">Alienware</a> to light a fire under <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion's</em></a> PvP game. While recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/wings-over-atreia-to-rift-or-not-to-rift-that-is-the-question/">changes to rifting</a> have curtailed much of the open-world conflict, the "red equals dead" mentality is alive and well in the Abyss. This weekend (November 5th to November 7th), bring your best gear and you could win one of three <a href="http://www.alienwarearena.com/event/aion-pvp/prizes/">ATI Radeon 5850</a> graphics cards.<br />
<br />
You'll need to register for the contest and then score 15 PvP kills before 9:00 pm Sunday to be eligible to win. <a href="http://www.ncsoft.com">NCsoft's</a> Lance Stites has weighed in on the one-year anniversary of <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>. Stites, Executive Vice President of Game Operations and Production, has quite a lot to say about the land of Atreia and the eternal war between its winged denizens. From thoughts on the launch-day server queues that were enraging prospective players this time last year, to the free content updates featured in version 1.9 and the more recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/assault-on-balaurea">Assault on Balaurea</a>, Stites summarizes a year of tweaks in a post over at <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=389&amp;page">AionOnline</a>.<br />
<br />
In addition to his mini-retrospective, Stites also hints at the future, which includes "<em>new western-specific events, continuing refinement to drop rates and experience, a 64-bit client to make performance better than ever and expanded pet functionality</em>." Finally, he mentions the special one-year anniversary presents available to active players via the in-game survey system, as well as the unique Aqua Griffo pet gifted to loyal subscribers who've stuck with the game since launch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/22/ncsofts-stites-talks-aion-anniversary/">NCsoft's Stites talks Aion anniversary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. <em>This week <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/waging-war/">Waging WAR</a> rides the double rainbow of gameplay customization via downloadable content and takes a cursory glance at the RvR packs being teased by the folks behind the development of </em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning</a><em>. Let's follow along and see what Greg can unleash this time.</em><br />
<br />
It is difficult to talk about the future of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>WAR</em></a> right now. Not because it doesn't have a future, but because the availability of information regarding it is not exactly easy to find. Actually, information on the future of <em>WAR</em> is all but non-existent, surrounded by controversy on all sides, and steeped in rumor, speculation, assumption and misinformation. The best I can put together is that we, as players, can look forward to some sort of set of three different "RvR Packs" allowing us to "customize" our gameplay experience moving forward. The packs have been called "Power," "Progression," and "Personality." What exactly each contains is a mystery, although the few talking points I was able to find regarding these RvR packs are speculatively disappointing at best. Although Carrie, Andy, and anyone else involved with the <a href="http://www.mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a> development team have said time and time again that they are not discussing moving toward the free-to-play business model, what they're proposing with these customization packs looks suspiciously like the item shop established by <a href="http://www.turbine.com">Turbine</a>, implemented in <a href="http://www.ddo.com"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em></a> and soon in <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> as well. V.I.P. membership, anyone? <br />
<br />
Although concrete information is scarce and difficult to find, let's take a look at the most commonly referenced points of interest after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/28/waging-war-rvr-packs-the-wait-and-see-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Waging WAR: RvR packs, the "wait and see" edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/28/waging-war-rvr-packs-the-wait-and-see-edition/">Waging WAR: RvR packs, the "wait and see" edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 28 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. While there is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/curse-com-founders-open-aion-letter-to-ncsoft-korea/">some swirling controversy</a> about various things within <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, many people are still thrilled with how beautiful the game is. While it's all very well and good to have nice graphics, one of the things we've noticed about the games that seem to do best is that they don't take themselves <em>too</em> seriously. Pop-culture references, silly asides, or just things that make us laugh serve to endear games to us. Today, we have a fairly silly thing that Seagull of the Ariel server in <em><a href="http://www.aiononline.com">Aion</a></em> noticed while getting some game time in. We'll let him explain: <em>Idle animations in [<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Aion/">Aion</a>] are great. I was standing in a pool of water, and my avatar attempted to catch nearby fish with his bare hands. After succeeding, the fish is playfully thrown back into the water. (Insert token mining for fish joke here.</em>)<br /><br />If you've run across something strange or funny while you're out adventuring, we'd love to learn about it. Just send a screenshot of it to us here at <strong>oneshots AT massively DOT com</strong> along with your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. Please try to make sure your images are at least 1024px wide and have as few UI elements as is possible. We'll post them out here and give you the credit for pointing that amusing bit out to us!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/">One Shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2704109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os864_eq2_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2700179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os863_fe_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2695825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os862_lotro_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2691569"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os861_co_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/one-shots/#2687909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/02/os860_wow_1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/10/one-shots-good-catch/">One Shots: Good catch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Oct 2009 14:00:00 EST. Transportation is important to any MMO, especially one like <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> which doesn't include the option of a mount. Yes, there are no cats, no horses or flying creatures to ride. It's just you, your feet, your wings and a little magic. Now the starter zones might look small but the main areas are ten times the size which can take a good half an hour to cross, not including time spent dying. Today we're going to have a look at transportation and what you need to know to navigate around. Elysea and Asmodae so join us after the jump to find out the secrets of travel in <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-transportation-101/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Everything Aion: Transportation 101</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-transportation-101/">Everything Aion: Transportation 101</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 20:00:00 EST. Flight is probably the thing which has drawn most people to <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>. The idea of soaring high above the cloud on a pair of white/black-feathered wings is a universally appealing one. The reality, however, is a little different. Flight in <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is not something you can do immediately nor indefinitely and the rules for this are not just to be annoying, they are a part of the game's world and lore. <br /><br />Join us after the jump when we look at everything you need to know about using your wings.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-flight-101/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Everything Aion: Flight 101</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/06/everything-aion-flight-101/">Everything Aion: Flight 101</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 06 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. She might look familiar as her image is used to advertise the game and a statue of her will also be found in the <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/uk/preorder/">Collector's Edition</a> when <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is released later this month. <br /><br />"Aiva's Story" is the work of artist Neil Googe and writers David Noonan and Ricardo Sanchez. Aiva's life is torn apart when her family is killed by an Elyos raiding party. Embittered, she endures a harsh life as a mercenary, fighting Karnifs and the Mau. She brings with her a festering hatred for the white-winged Elyos, eventually ascending to Daevahood and is posted to the Abyss. The comic book will be available (albeit in limited quantities) at the <em>Aion</em> booth at this weekend's <a href="http://massively.com/penny-arcade-expo">Penny Arcade Expo</a> in Seattle but fans will also be able to get their hands on a copy by purchasing the game at GameStop in the US and Electronic Boutique stores in Canada..<br /><br />You can check out our gallery below to see the cover art in it's full glory, as well as some internal artwork.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/">Aion: Aiva's Story</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251133"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_cover_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251134"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_front_cover_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251135"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_spread_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <hr />

The beta will take place between September 6th - 13th and will include the new Westernised character customization options, as well as a chance to see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5/"><em>The Shadow of Balaur</em></a>, the newest patch which was added to the Korean version of the game in August.<br /><br />As with the final CBTs, the open beta will have a level cap of 30, which means new players to the game can experience <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-becoming-a-daeva/">ascension</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-becoming-a-daeva/">Daevahood</a> as well as the PvPvE area known as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/22/aion-concept-art-features-ominous-abyss-winged-balaur/">the Abyss</a>. Gamers who pre-ordered <em>Aion </em>will also get access to the pre-select and a two-day headstart before the game officially launches on September 22nd in the US and the 25th in Europe. The pre-select will take place on September 18, while <em>Aion</em>'s headstart period will begin September 20. So if you want to take part, it might be wise to pre-order now, especially given the new <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/25/ncsoft-launch-aion-and-guild-wars-emote-cross-promotion/">cross promotion</a> we told you about earlier in the week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/ncsoft-announces-aion-na-and-eu-open-beta-details/">NCsoft announces Aion NA and EU open beta details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST. Taking place between September 4th-6th in Seattle, PAX is fast becoming the new must-attend convention for all sections of the industry, from developers to publishers and gamers. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has just announced their plans for this year's convention and this focuses on their three big IPs: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and <a href="http://cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>.<br /><br />NCsoft will once again have booths at the event, one per game. On the <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> front, they will be showing the latest build of the game, which includes <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5">patch 1.5</a> (aka <em><a href="http://massively.com/tag/the-shadow-of-the-balaur">The Shadow of the Balaur</a></em>). Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_xaen">Brian Knox</a> and Associate Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_liv">Lani Blazier</a> will also be on hand at booth #642. At the <a href="http://massively.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> booth (#842), there will be Q and As with the Live Team, a talk on the upcoming novel <em>The Fall of Ascalon</em> and the chance to win a 128 page <em>Art of Guild Wars 2</em> artbook. Finally at the <a href="http://massively.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> booth (#542) you can take a peek at the new update ("Power Spectrum") and nab a special PAX Costume Power code. There will also be a player meet up on the Saturday night (September 5th) hosted by the Online Community Relations team, for more information on that click <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/city_of_heroes_does_pax.html">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/26/ncsoft-announces-its-pax-plans/">NCsoft announces its PAX plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. That's one of the reasons <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> appeals so much. Well <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has launched a little cross promotion based on that fact. Essentially it boils down to this: if you buy a first edition of <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> (either the steelbook or the shiny Collector's Edition) you'll get a special emote which will be tied to your account. This will then allow you to summon a pair of wings in <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>! <br /><br />Unfortunately the wings are purely cosmetic, your Guild Wars avatar won't be able to take to the air but the wings will move and look awfully authentic (as seen in the image to your left). The emote itself can be triggered by typing /aion in any <a href="http://massively.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> title. Before you ask, it's completely free, has unlimited uses and will become active on September 22nd, the day <em>Aion</em> launches in North America. However it is worth stressing that the code can only be gained by getting physical versions of the game, not through digital download. The code emote is also available to gamers both in North America and Europe and will be tied to your account forever. <br /><br />For more information on how to get and redeem your emote, as well as check out what it will look like, click <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/aion/">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/25/ncsoft-launch-aion-and-guild-wars-emote-cross-promotion/">NCsoft launch Aion and Guild Wars emote cross promotion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 14:00:00 EST. <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1250859009238*/">GamesCom</a> is in full swing with <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> taking full advantage of social networking, from <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/community/twitter/">twittering</a> about their activities to <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/jtv-live/?_fb_fromhash=0bb5b27bafd406c7b59b59418afea0d9">streaming video</a> on Facebook in order to promote their newest MMO. <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> has been the talk of the show with everything from an <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/37243-pics-correspondence-gamescom-aion-1-5-a.html">eye-catching booth</a> and <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/community/blog/aion-at-gamescom---bring-your-wellingtons.html">drool-worthy swag</a> to <a href="http://www.twitvid.com/2E3AB">live theatre</a> (a must-see even if the acting is cringe-worthy) to an interview with the Korean development team. <br /><br />Associate Producer Lani Blazier <a href="http://www.twitvid.com/D4CF7">took to the stage</a> to put the audience's questions to <em>Aion</em>'s Lead Designer Yongchan Jee in an epic seventy minute video. This includes discussing the origins of the combat system and PvPvE, what makes <em>Aion</em> different from other games like <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> and <a href="http://lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> to offering advice for would-be games designers. The interview itself is great because it's not just all about the English devs, instead we're getting to the source and a chance to listen to direct answers from one of the creators of 2009's most anticipated MMO. <br /><br />Check out the full video after the jump.<br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ncsoft-posts-epic-video-interview-with-aion-lead-designer-yongch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft posts epic video interview with Aion Lead Designer Yongchan Jee </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ncsoft-posts-epic-video-interview-with-aion-lead-designer-yongch/">NCsoft posts epic video interview with Aion Lead Designer Yongchan Jee </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> dev Yongchan Jee spilled the beans on the game's origins <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24915">as part of</a> a GDC Europe Q and A session. <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com">Gamasutra</a> were on hand to find out what exactly makes the game stand out in Korea. This included addressing a gap in the market for 'AAA' titles after the release of <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/"><em>Lineage II</em></a> and <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, as well as focusing on a faction warfare angle which sees the two player-controlled races of the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/elyos">Elyos</a> and the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/asmodians">Asmodians</a> fighting against each other and the terrifying <a href="http://massively.com/tag/balaur">Balaur</a>. Jee also discussed how the game was rebooted in 2006 and while this did affect the moral of the developers, it ultimately allowed them to start from scratch and create a truly memorable game.<br /><br />Lee also focused on the character customisation, discussing the concepts of beautiful and ugly characters in MMOs like <a href="http://massively.com/tag/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, where Korean players often favour the Alliance over the Horde. He also explained why the devs chose to create <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> as a zone-based MMO over a seamless world. <em>Aion</em> fans should definitely check out Gamasutra's write up for even more hints at <em>Aion</em>'s gestation and conception.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ncsoft-dev-discusses-the-genesis-of-aion-at-gdc-europe/">NCsoft dev discusses the genesis of Aion at GDC Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a>'s launch is coming up this September, and a brand new trailer has been released to make sure that everyone remembers exactly how pretty this game is. For the record, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span>'s "patch 1.5 trailer" is a glorious eye-candy collection of new zones, monsters, powers, and pretty. The focus here is obviously on the threats of the world as many large bosses are shown while formerly beautiful areas transition into a state of war and decay. The threats that will haunt players are extremely varied, as the video starts off with a dragon but goes on to show demons, foot soldiers, and even a really angry plant-like thing. You know things are bad when you can't even trust the plants.<br /><br />The second half of the trailer features an Asmodian raiding party taking down the owners of a beautiful airship, as well as a huge battle in the... It seems with rumblings of an <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_ayase/status/3367687235">open beta</a> reverberating through the interweb, <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> is never far from the thoughts of the avid MMO player or Team Massively. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> just sent through a new (and shiny) batch of lovely Cleric-centric screenshots for your perusal. Focusing on the first of two subclasses, Clerics are healers who use <em>"the power of magic to strengthen allies and heal their wounds. They can resurrect their allies. They are formidable opponents in melee when using a mace and a shield."</em><br /><br />Focusing on a rather gruff-looking Elyos, a dainty female Asmodian with scary eyes and another Asmodian sporting what looks like a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/2216489/">new set of wings</a>, the images are pure eye candy. Got <a href="http://massively.com/tags/aion-beta">beta</a> withdrawal symptoms yet? Well check out our gallery below and hang on in there. Over the coming weeks we'll be bringing even more <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion">Aion</a> </em>news your way as we hurtle towards the much anticipated launch.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/">Aion: A closer look at the Priest: the Cleric</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216498"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_16-34-08-73_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216497"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_16-32-12-79_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216496"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_16-20-10-07_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216495"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_15-16-32-29_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-priest-the-cleric/#2216494"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/08/aion_2009-08-13_14-23-06-51_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/ncsoft-reveals-aions-priest-subclass-the-cleric/">NCsoft reveals Aion's Priest subclass: the Cleric</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 17:00:00 EST. <div align="left">MMOs tend to have dedicated fan bases and everyone has their favourite: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>,<em> <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com">WoW</a></em>, <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <em><a href="http://lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> ... the list goes on and on. Everyone has their own personal favourite or the hip one that everyone and their pet goldfish is currently engrossed in. For example, I'm renowned for my adoration of the gorgeous Korean MMO that is <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a> </em>as well as my passion for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>. <br /><br />Personally, these are the only two MMOs which do it for me enough that I will spend copious amounts of time exploring, questing and flying around pretty aimlessly. So two is my limit, I will occasionally play a couple extra, if I have to review something or a beta comes up but there's often little to keep me going past that. Yet <em>Aion </em>and<em> WoW </em>remain, filling the void and I couldn't be happier. Especially as there's more than enough happening between the two of them at the moment to keep me very busy. So I'm wondering, ever constant readers, how many MMOs do you juggle on a regular basis? Answer in the usual way by dropping your thoughts into the comment box below.<br /> </div>

<a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s latest MMO that is due to launch in the US and Europe next month, has just gone gold, the company has announced. For those not in the know, this means the game has been completed and is now being manufactured for release. Yes, that's it, the game is done. This comes after <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> has topped <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/aion-collectors-edition-pre-orders-top-steam-weekly-sales/">Steam's weekly sales</a> chart and the Collector's Edition <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/08/aion-collectors-edition-close-to-selling-out-in-the-uk/">has almost sold out</a> in the UK. <br /><br />The announcement hits just a few days before <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/">GamesCom 2009</a> in Cologne, Germany where NCsoft will be demoing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5">version 1.5</a> of the game, which includes <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em> content patch that was released in Korea on August 5th. NCsoft will also be demoing this latest version of the game at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle and it will also be included with the North American and European versions of the game when <em>Aion</em> is released on September 22nd/25th. <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em> promises new zones, instances, quests and some specially created Western looks within the expansive character customisation system.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/ncsoft-announces-aion-has-gone-gold-now-being-manufactured/">NCsoft announces Aion has gone gold, now being manufactured</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST. With the sixth and final <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">Closed Beta Test</a> for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft's</a> newest title, <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a>, beginning later today. Things are starting to get really interesting. YouTube is a haven for all things video, especially when it comes to gaming and a look at those which aren't yet out. Well, a <a href="http://aionhun.hu/news.php">Hungarian fansite</a> has uncovered the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/elyos">Elyos</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/Asmodians">Asmodians</a> origin videos and posted them on their <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/AionHun">Youtube channel</a>. Both videos are short but packed with lore and done in a similar style to the <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> origins video <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-origins-video-now-in-the-wild/">we told you about</a> last month. <br /><br />Told from the perspective of a member of each race, the two videos narrate the first meeting of the Elyos and the Asmodians after years of separation. The Elyos blundered through a rift and a simple misunderstanding, perceived differently by each side, led to the start of a bitter feud. The Elyos believed the Asmodians were corruptions and that both them and their land must be destroyed, while the Asmodians feel it is their right to conquer the Elyos and their lush land simply because they believe they - and their Shedim Lords - were the ones who saved Atreia from complete destruction during the Cataclysm.<br /><br />Juicy stuff, eh? Well check out the videos in their complete Korean glory after the jump (click on cc to get the English subtitles).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/aion-elyos-and-asmodian-origin-videos-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aion Elyos and Asmodian origin videos revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/aion-elyos-and-asmodian-origin-videos-revealed/">Aion Elyos and Asmodian origin videos revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 17:00:00 EST. Is it nearly September? Apparently so as the sixth and final <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">Closed Beta Test</a> (CBT) kicks off this weekend. Over the last five CBTs we've had the chance to play both <a href="http://massively.com/tag/elyos">Elyos</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/asmodians">Asmodians</a>, to see the starter zones and the Abyss, to taste the PvPvE content, find our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-finds-its-voice-for-cbt5-weekend/">avatar's voice</a> and, of course, spread our wings and fly. <a href="http://eu.aiononline.com/uk/news/the-sixth-aion-closed-beta-event-1.html">According</a> to the game's official site, CBT 6 sees the level cap at 30, ready for some higher level content from <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em>, also known as <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-patch1.5">patch 1.5</a>. <br /><br />Perhaps more promising is the announcement of new story-driven content designed to give us a taste of what is to come: <em>"We want to conclude closed beta testing on a high note, so we are arranging a series of story-driven in-game events, in part hinting at some of the much-anticipated content forthcoming in with our massive release day patch."<br /><br /></em>Here's hoping for a little Dreadgion action and a taste of Dark Poeta when the beta kicks off this Friday at noon PST and 8pm CEST over in Europe. We'll keep you updated as soon as the <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a></em> dev team get into more specifics about their plans.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/final-aion-cbt-promises-a-sneak-peak-at-launch-day-content/">Final Aion CBT promises a sneak peek at launch day content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> set to launch <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/23/western-launch-dates-for-aion-revealed/">in just over a month</a>, it seems like we're getting goodies on a daily basis that help keep the hype train in (loco)motion. The most recent release is the game's <a href="http://g4tv.com/videos/40561/Exclusive-Aion-Intro-Cinematic/">intro cinematic</a> that gives a brief overview of Atreia's history and tries to set the tone for the PvPvE struggle between the Elyos, Asmodians, and Balaur.<br /><br />The trailer is done in CGI but there are times when it's hard to tell whether or not they are using cinematic graphics or in-game graphics. This is a testament to the game's Crytek engine, which the developers really seem to have taken advantage of. As for the intro story, well, to be honest it's a little vague. That isn't to say that the lore of Atreia is weak -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-the-lore-of-atreia/">it truly isn't</a> -- but the cinematic doesn't really get into the lore all that much, which has left some viewers confused. The most common questions we're hearing are, "Why are the Elyos and Asmodians fighting each other? Shouldn't they be unified by a common enemy?" and "What's this about an assassination?" One witty commenter wanted to know if Atreians are mole-people because they seem to be living inside the planet rather than outside.<br /><br />Check out the video for yourself after the cut!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/aion-intro-cinematic-beautiful-but-slightly-vague/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aion intro cinematic beautiful but slightly vague?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/aion-intro-cinematic-beautiful-but-slightly-vague/">Aion intro cinematic beautiful but slightly vague?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. Now we've had a good look at <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> and tried out both factions it's time to look deeper into what makes the game tick. You might have got your wings and may even have done a little PvP but you've probably starting to pay more attention to the reasons behind the enmity between Elyos and the Asmodians and the lore of Atreia. Indeed, it's hard not to as, like any MMO, lore is the backbone of the game itself and the reasons we play.<br /><br />While some of the lore can be gleaned from the in-game dialogue, sometimes you have to look deeper. NCsoft <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/aion-website-refresh-includes-game-guides-and-wiki/">recently</a> <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion">created a wiki</a> on the official site, which allowed them to not only <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Beginner%E2%80%99s+Guide">explain the game</a> to new players but also gave them the perfect opportunity to <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Lore">expand on the lore</a>. They also released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-origins-video-now-in-the-wild/">an origins video</a>, which presented key events in Atreia's history in the form of a narrated montage. Join us now as we look deeper into the lore behind a fascinating game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-the-lore-of-atreia/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands on with the Aion beta: The lore of Atreia</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/hands-on-with-the-aion-beta-the-lore-of-atreia/">Hands on with the Aion beta: The lore of Atreia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. Just think about that title for a second. Of all the games genres you've played, isn't it MMOs that feel most like carbon copies of one another? Level systems, the character creation process and class archetypes are nearly universal, with hundreds of games sharing the same characteristics. Don't you sometimes wish that MMO developers would step back and reassess the genre they have collectively created? This week, as part of Massively's "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/redefining-mmos/">Redefining MMOs</a>" series, it's my turn to muse on a topic and I've chosen to look as whether it's time the MMO mould (or mold, as my American editors would say) should be broken and re-examined.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"> <br /> Many aspects of MMOs, such as classes, levelling, raids and bosses, endure simply because they work. After all, if it ain't broke why fix it? But sometimes it feels like you need a breath of fresh air, to step back and smell the roses. This is especially the case when carbon copy MMOs start being rolled out. In the last few months I've tried MMO after MMO and can literally play each one blindfolded. Mages are mages, warriors are warriors and clerics by any other name are still priests. While the archetypes of these classes -- the healer, the tank, the caster, the melee damage-dealer and the pet-toting badass -- differ slightly between genres and titles, they are part of a formula that seems to define the MMO genre.<br /> <br /> Skip past the cut to read the rest of the article<br /> </div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/redefining-mmos-breaking-the-mould/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/redefining-mmos-breaking-the-mould/">Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 09:30:00 EST. It seems 2009 is the Summer of Betas. There certainly are a lot going on at the moment: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://www.citiesxl.com/"><em>Cities XL</em></a> and <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> are just three of the most popular currently going on but the sheer concept of beta testing is a bit of a bug-bear amongst players. There are basically two camps: those who lap up a beta and treat it is a chance to explore the newest games (and seems to include most of Team Massively) or the latest content months before anyone else. Camp number two is a little more pragmatic. For these folks, betas (while fun and exciting) are just an excuse for Company X to save some money by getting a few million free and eager quality assurance monkeys. After all they ask for detailed bug reports and the same kind of information that is asked of professionals who get paid minimum wage to play games for hours.<br /><br />So, readers, as you mull over your coffee and cereal this morning, I'm eager to know to which camp you see yourself belonging? Are betas just a cheap ploy to get a few thousand fresh pairs of eyes or a genuine attempt to gauge a new game? Drop your thoughts in the box below.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/the-daily-grind-is-beta-testing-just-free-labour/">The Daily Grind: Is beta testing just free labour?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. As we inch closer to the <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> launch on 22nd and 25th September (NA and EU, respectively), the excitement about <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s latest MMO is reaching fever pitch. Yesterday, <a href="http://g4tv.com">G4TV</a> released the <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698001/Exclusive-Aion-Video-Podcast-Classes--Customization.html">second</a> <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> vidcast (the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/aions-first-video-podcast-is-packing-lore-and-stunning-visuals/">first one</a> was hosted by IGN). Featuring devs including Associate Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_liv">Lani Blazier</a> and Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_xaen">Brian Knox</a>, this one is all about character customisation. The interviews are also interspersed with some impressive in-game footage and rather arty shots of their Seattle offices. <br /><br />The vidcast begins by going through the differences between PvP, PvE and PvPvE. Indeed the highlight has to be seeing Lani try to figure out the best pronunciation of PvPvE. There's also a rundown of the main classess and the sub-class choices you can pick upon Ascending. If you're looking for one word that sums up both the game and this vidcast, it would have to be 'uniqueness'. While none of the information will be new to people playing the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-beta">beta</a> or who have been following the game, it's great to see more of the people behind the game and their genuine passion for Atreia.<br /><br />Hit the jump to check out the video.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/second-aion-vidcast-now-available/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Aion vidcast now available</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/second-aion-vidcast-now-available/">Second Aion vidcast now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. For us here in the west, the launch of<em> <a href="http://aiononline.com">Aion</a> </em>might still be on the horizon. However, having had the game for the better<a href="http://aion.plaync.co.kr"> </a>part of a year, <a href="http://aion.plaync.co.kr/">gamers in Korea</a> have already turned their attention to patch 1.5. Indeed this is something <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/which-version-of-aion-will-be-available-at-launch/">we should </a>also be excited about as the localized version of <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> aimed at Europe and the US will include this newest content patch. <br /><br />With this in mind, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> over in Korea has revealed a trailer touting the new patch, catchily nicknamed The <em>Shadow of the Balaur</em>. According to <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/general-discussion/20946-patch-notes-v1-5-update-shadow-balaur.html">translated patch notes</a> from the <a href="http://aion.plaync.co.kr/board/tsnotice/view?articleID=94&amp;page=">official Korean site</a>, 1.5 will include new instances that will see players visiting a twisted Balaur-infested version of the Elyos starter zone known as Dark Poeta. There's also a flying ship crewed by the adorable ferret-like Shugo and a new battleground. On top of that are plenty of minor changes including the ability to zoom in on the minimap, four new face presets, new armour sets and, my personal favourite, in-game clothing in the form of kimono and the imperial uniforms of China and Taiwan. <br /><br />Check out the video after the jump for a taste of what's to come.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/ncsoft-release-korean-trailer-for-aion-patch-1-5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NCsoft release Korean trailer for Aion patch 1.5 </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/02/ncsoft-release-korean-trailer-for-aion-patch-1-5/">NCsoft release Korean trailer for Aion patch 1.5 </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. <div align="left">With less than twenty four hours until the next <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> beta weekend begins, everyone is getting rather excited about the introduction of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/aion-finds-its-voice-for-cbt5-weekend/">English language files</a>. In advance of CBT5, the internet is being flooded with leaked videos showing ascension cut scenes and other aspects of game play. However, there's also something we've not seen before: a video prologue which shows the history of Atreia. As well as setting up the events of the game, it has got some pretty fantastic artwork seeming more of a montage than a cut scene. My guess is this will loop if the login screen is left alone for a while, much like a demo, in the final version of the game. There's little new here in terms of lore but it certainly looks very nice.<br /><br />Hit the jump to see the video.<br /><br /></div>

<br /><a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion: The Tower of Eternity</em></a> is attracting quite a lot of attention and, hot on the heels of the next phase in the beta, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has released a new and exciting batch of screenshots. This time focusing on the second Mage subclass -- the Sorcerer -- the fourteen screenies show new mobs and locations, as well as both Asmodian and Elyos' Sorcerers. As usual, the screenshots also come with a little bit more info about the class:<br /><br /><em>"The Sorcerer is a Daeva who follows the Star of Magic. They are able to freely wield the destructive power if the natural elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. A sorcerer is a scholar at heart, evident by the books and orbs they normally carry with them. However, these items can be dangerous weapons in their hands as they help to increase a Sorcerer's power."</em><br /><br />Check out our gallery below to see the new screenshots in all their shiny glory.<br /> <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/">Aion: A closer look at the Mage: the Sorcerer</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176055"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-15-05-51-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176053"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-14-08-18-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176052"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-11-55-20-84_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176051"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-11-27-13-68_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-a-closer-look-at-the-mage-the-sorcerer/#2176050"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/07/aion-2009-07-15-11-09-04-48_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/ncsoft-reveals-the-second-mage-subclass-the-sorcerer/">NCsoft reveals the second Mage subclass: the Sorcerer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 16:00:00 EST.
