Assault on Balaurea brought plenty of interest to Aion fans, and the development team is enjoying it as much as anyone.

The latest look at the Balaurean content comes in the form of two new three-minute videos that combine gameplay footage and developer narrative to tell the story of what's next for Aion. In the lore video, Associate Producer Sean Neil, along with Content Writers Jessica Downs and Connor Sheehy, gives a history of important events and take a look at what's to come. In the factions and instances video, Sean, Jessica, and Connor give an overview of the three new factions and introduce the new lower-level instances.

The videos are a fun look at Aion through the eyes of some of its creators. Follow along after the jump to watch both for yourself.

Today is a big day for Aion fans: the launch of Assault on Balaurea.

The Elyos and Asmodians may not like one another very much, but they're going to have to settle their differences -- at least temporarily -- to take on their mutual enemy in this update.

The Balaureans are the main threat, and while it's not a great situation to be in, look on the bright side: thanks to them, Aion players are getting new zones, instances, pets, and even a shiny new level cap. Flight mechanics have been improved as well to help everyone take on the Balaureans.

Today, NCsoft unveils a video tour of Inggison, a new zone introduced in Aion's upcoming expansion, Assault on Balaurea. No longer confined to Atreia on the interior of the planet, players will venture forth to the lands on the outside. Filled with a variety of new plant and wildlife, Inggison is the Elyos foothold in Balaurea.

Even as they bask in direct sunlight (a treat not possible in the sundered lands of Asmodae and Elysea), Daevas in Aion will encounter new foes -- such as the Balaur-worshippers of Undirborg -- and fight old ones, as the Asmodians try to claim the Temple of Scales and Altar of Avarice Fortresses.

After watching the video, Massively asked Chris Hager, Producer of Aion, NCsoft West, a few questions about this new area.

Ready to get a preview of Aion's forthcoming Assault on Balaurea expansion? You're in luck, as today finds the new content live on the Public Test Server, a couple weeks ahead of its September 7th release date. Pre-existing PTS players will find that their characters have been wiped, which is a small price to pay for the chance to test the new content with accelerated XP and loot drop rates.

Assault on Balaurea features a new pet system as well as new zones, instances, quests, and a level cap increase. Check out the official press release for more information, including how to install and run the PTS client.

Aion's Assault on Balaurea has been a long time coming. We chatted with Lead Producer Chris "Kinslon" Hager back in May, and fans have been scouring the patch notes, but one big question has remained unanswered: When?

We got our answer today. NCsoft has announced a September 7th release date for the free digital version of Assault on Balaurea. Boxed copies of the full game containing codes for exclusive in-game pets -- which carry some benefits for their owners -- are also available. Players can purchase those in North America on September 7th and in Europe on September 10th.
