Arguably the most recognizable Second Life resident from the outside, with her blue-and-purple butterfly wings, Aimee Weber has made a name for herself with her metaverse development company Aimee Weber Studios. She's become so successful, in fact, that she no longer has the time to play on her own private island, so she's selling it. In a statement to Massively, she says:

"I used to love filling the sim with half-completed projects, fun little experiments in unusual texturing, experiments of my stream of consciousness, simulations of RL places I like to hang out in so that I could have virtual getaways. As Second Life became a profession I've found I had less and less time for such indulgences. SL is less a kiddy sandbox these days, and more like a serious construction zone."

Aimee takes care of the transfer fee, and you get full ownership of her jungle retreat. Such a deal! Interested residents can contact her in-world.

Oh Gods of Yummy Things ... it's that time of year again, isn't it? Love it or loathe it, it's Christmas trotting toward you, antlered head held high and the glint of consumer-related malice in its eye. Regardless of your personal belief system, chances are you'll have to buy at least one gift for someone simply because it's traditional. Well, if that someone also happens to be a Second Life resident, then let this post help you in deciding what to get someone who has everything -- virtually.

The Casual/Work Acquaintance
Maybe you have a supervisor or boss that spends time in SL, but you don't know their tastes well enough to know what they'd like as a gift (and consequently feel warm and fuzzy toward you enough to give you a raise). I suggest one of the fine guides to Second Life to be had on Amazon.com. In fact, one of them was co-authored by Our Aimee Weber! And if you can't trust a Massively blogger, who can you trust?

Well I'm not going to tell you, so wallow in ignorance! Oh, I'm just kidding. But if you're a budding content creator who would like to take their Second Life building skills to the next level, you may consider joining me (Aimee Weber) along with Kimberly Rufer-Bach (Kim Anubis) and Richard Platel (Wednesday Grimm) this Friday November 9th at 7pm SLT on Purple Stripe Island for the release party for our new book Creating Your World: The Official Guide to Advanced Content Creation for Second Life (978-0-470-17114-1). Cake will be served.

During the event authors will answer questions and give brief demonstrations on some of the material covered in the book such as simple texture baking and how to script an information kiosk. The lessons are free but we will likely try to hypnotize you into buying the book. Hope to see you all there!

In 1977 Charles and Ray Eames created a documentary called the Powers of 10 which gave viewers a mind-changing perspective on just how small we are in comparison to our universe. In the spirit of this film, I thought I would take you all on a quick photographic journey of Second Life, starting with the smallest objects possible and ending with a view of everything, all that there is. I will be adjusting scale for aesthetics rather than using an exponential scale, which is particularly handy since Second Life is not QUITE as large as the real-world universe. But I think you will be surprised to see just how big it is.

So let the journey begin!

Scott Adams of Dilbert fame held an in-world book signing event for Second Life residents on October 30, to promote his new non-Dilbert book Stick To Drawing Comics, Monkey Brain! From all accounts of those who attended, it was a huge success, though I hadn't realized exactly what went on there until this video popped up.

In a move I'm sure helped ingratiate himself to the audience, Adams let a line of residents approach his avatar to dole out various types of injury -- from the looks of it, foot-mashing, face-slapping, and the overwhelming favorite, groin-kicking, at which Adams's avatar falls down, curling into fetal position amusingly. About halfway through the video, Adams gets the beatdown by Dilbert himself; how meta can you get? Also, while you're watching, keep an eye out for our own Aimee Weber, watching on in the background, butterfly wings a-flutter!

Wow, who knew that the secret to success was letting oneself be abused by one's fans? I'll have to rethink my entire strategy!
