As a long-time movie buff, I've always been fascinated by sequels. I know, they have a terrible reputation and everyone gets this face like he's digesting a porcupine when discussing them, but there's something fun about them as well. I think we always want a good story to continue, to see what happens next, and to answer the question, "What would the first film be like if it were put in the hands of a complete boob?" It would be an entertaining trainwreck, that's what.

Even though the MMORPG genre is in its toddler stage, it's seen a number of sequels, prequels and spin-offs, just the same as other types of entertainment. Video game sequels for hit titles are safer financial investments than striking out into new territory, so it makes sense that MMO studios would follow this pattern as well.

Right now there are loads of MMO sequels and spin-offs in the works -- including EverQuest Next, PlanetSide Next, Guild Wars 2, Mabinogi 2, MapleStory 2, Phantasy Star Online 2, Dust 514, and even a possible Ultima Online sequel -- so it's safe to say that the trend won't be dying down anytime soon. However, today I want to look at 10 sequels that already made it to release and briefly examine how they stacked up to their predecessors. Oh yes, there will be blood after the jump -- and I will drink your milkshake!
Continue reading The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis

The Perfect Ten: Sequelitis originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 19 May 2011 11:30:00 EST. Imagine a world where World War II -- also known as "That War With All Them Movies" -- never ended. Imagine that while the conflict raged, weapons development continued to advance well into the 1950s. Now imagine that this war-ravaged landscape is your new virtual playground.

Joymax, the studio behind Silkroad Online, revealed at GDC that its next MMO will take place in such a world. Code-named Karma Online, this massively multiplayer online first-person shooter will attempt to provide the ultimate PvP battleground for players sick of bows and arrows and futuristic plasma rifles.

Karma Online seeks to meld the best of both RPGs and FPSs by introducing a skill tree system that allows soldiers to specialize in preferred weapons and tactics. Although we're not quite sure what Joymax means by this, the studio promises more immersion by requiring the use of both hands for combat instead of just the mouse. The game will also come with the popular Call of Duty-style zombie mode if you want to switch up player-killing for undead slaughter.

The shooter is scheduled to go into closed beta this May. Hit the jump to see Karma Online in action and get the skinny on Joymax and WeMade Entertainment's other projects-in-progress!

Last month WeMade Entertainment's Digimon Battle flipped the switch and set the servers from open beta to full launch. Since then, players have been completing challenges and quests to ensure that the vil Digimon don't take over Earth and the digital world. To celebrate the smooth launch and growing player-base, WeMade has announced that tomorrow, May 19th, they'll be starting several contests and adding new content for players to enjoy.

For the free-to-play side of the house, there will be new maps offering challenges such as new digimon to capture and train like Pagumon, Minomon, and Poromon, to name a few. The level cap has also been raised to 100, with Digimon able to level to 99 as well. Additionally, all players will be able to participate in the events that kick off on the 19th with a race to level their Trainers and another to digivolve five of their captured Digimon to the mega stage. On top of that, a surprise loot chest is dropping quite frequently on the new Sky Dungeon, just waiting for players to snap it up. There will also be a host of new cards and other upgrades in the cash shop as well.

If you're curious about Digimon Battle but haven't had a chance to try it out yet, why not pop over to the site, get signed up, and join the Digivolution. With the potential for prizes and new Digimon to train, it's as good a time as any.

Digimon Battle launches, adds new content originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 18 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. Tamers! The time to grab your Digimon and set off for adventure is upon us. The open beta for WeMade's Digimon Battle is set to open tonight at 5pm Pacific time for those who have signed up to try out this upcoming game. They're not just leaving it at that, though -- the plans are to celebrate the opening of Digimon Battle with a series of events called the Triple Play Event Bundle.

The events will run from March 17th through April 7th, and offer a variety of things for players to try out as they level their Digimon up in this interesting new world. The first one is called "Mega Mission" and players who manage to digivolve (evolve, for non-Digimon fans) their companions to the Mega Stage will have a chance to win 500 WeCash, and in-game items like Gold Drills, Excalibur Swords and a week of Deva Aura. The second event is called "Check in and Cash In" which will reward players who log once per day (for 100% attendance) with an interesting-sounding Mysterious DigiEgg prize. The third and final event will offer something called the "DB Happy Hour" that will grant players a 30% experience buff for free when they log in on March 20th & 21st between 11AM and 2PM server time to help stress-test the servers. (That's Pacific time for those curious.)
Continue reading Digimon Battle beta begins

Digimon Battle beta begins originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 19:00:00 EST. It seems like just yesterday when players were battling their Digimon against friends, evolving their pets into even more powerful monsters... Thankfully, for those of us who may have gotten older but haven't quite grown up, the Digimon MMO, Digimon Battle, has opened up their beta sign-ups. Who says you can't go back!

In this game you'll start your own tamer based on one of the ones from the series, customizing them as you go. Initially you'll only start out with a choice of three Partner Digimon: Gigimon, Gummymon, and Viximon. The other partner pets -- Yamon, DemiVeemon, Dorimon and Hopmon -- will have to be unlocked by participating in in-game events. From there, it's all about taming other pets and testing your skills against other tamers as you adventure, as well as defeating evil Digimon!
If you're interested in checking it out, be sure to pop by the Digimon Battle site and get signed up. We've also gotten an updated trailer from the last one (although a chunk of it is the same as before) which we tucked behind the break.
Continue reading Digimon Battle beta registration now open

Digimon Battle beta registration now open originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 09:00:00 EST. Remember Digimon, the little digital pet that emerged during the Tamagotchi craze in the 90s? The fad faded, like they tend to do, but the Digimon franchise stuck around in the form of books, toys, a trading card game, and now an MMO.

Yep. WeMade Entertainment launched a teaser site and trailer video for Digimon Battle yesterday. Both are short on details, but open beta registration details are promised "soon", and the company has jumped into the social media arena with both feet. There are updates a-plenty on their Twitter page, announcements and links on their Facebook page, artwork on the teaser site, and the aforementioned brand new teaser trailer.

WeMade has stated that they are planning to release the game in March, so the expected open beta will be brief, and presumably soon. We'll keep an eye out for details, and in the meantime check after the jump for the trailer.
Continue reading WeMade Entertainment releases Digimon MMO trailer

WeMade Entertainment releases Digimon MMO trailer originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 20:00:00 EST.
