Well-known <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> guild Method secured a world first kill on <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>'s Skeleton King in inferno mode just a few days after launch but was beaten to the game's completion by a single person. Players have been in outrage all week as server instabilities and login difficulties plagued the game's launch.<br />

<a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> revealed upcoming champion Darius this week and announced huge client updates that seem set to double the game's frame rate. <a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/"><em>Blacklight: Retribution</em></a> released a new Netwar game mode, combining capture the flag and control point gameplay. <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> released its new support hero Riftwalker, <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> released classic hero Treant, and <a href="http://riseofimmortals.com/"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> took a close look at melee damage-dealer Tzai. Upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MOBA/"><em>MOBA</em></a> <a href="https://account.hirezstudios.com/smitegame/"><em>Smite</em></a> will be entering closed beta at the end of the month, and <a href="http://www.torchlight2game.com/"><em>Torchlight II</em></a>'s beta will soon end for the last time.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/not-so-massively-error-37-hero-spotlights-and-the-torchlight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: Error 37, hero spotlights, and the Torchlight II beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/not-so-massively-error-37-hero-spotlights-and-the-torchlight/">Not So Massively: Error 37, hero spotlights, and the Torchlight II beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> became potentially the most pre-ordered PC game in history this week, breaking both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a>'s personal pre-order records and online retailer Amazon's. The game is set to launch at midnight tonight, unlocking physical copies and digital installers. <em><a href="http://diablo.com/">Diablo</a>-</em>inspired free-to-play dungeon crawler <a href="http://pathofexile.com/"><em>Path of Exile</em></a> approaches its own launch this week with the release of its penultimate version 0.9.9 patch.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> announced its upcoming MSI Beat IT tournament at DreamHack Summer 2012, with a prize fund of $40,000 US and a series of public online qualifiers. <a href="http://bloodlinechampions.com/"><em>Bloodline Champions</em></a> revealed its own $10,000 DreamHack tournament, with open in-game qualifiers scheduled for next weekend. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve">Valve</a> announced details of the second <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> world championship, a series that started with last year's $1.6 million US tournament.<br />
<br />
Blizzard settled its lawsuit with Valve this week, renaming <a href="http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/game/maps-and-mods/mods/dota"><em>Blizzard DOTA</em></a> to Blizzard All-Stars but securing the continued non-commercial use of the <a href="http://playdota.com/"><em>DotA</em></a> name for the fan community. <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> released its incredibly successful new Midwars game mode, and <a href="http://riseofimmortals.com/"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> put forth its official immortal spotlight for new immortal Nauria.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/not-so-massively-diablo-iii-launch-and-dreamhack-summer-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: Diablo III launch and DreamHack Summer 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/not-so-massively-diablo-iii-launch-and-dreamhack-summer-2012/">Not So Massively: Diablo III launch and DreamHack Summer 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/blizzard-renames-blizzard-dota-to-blizzard-all-stars/"><img alt="It's better than the original plan to name it Blizzard Dot-A." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/bdota-name-epl-511.jpg" /></a></div>
What's in a name? Quite a lot, as it turns out. A name alone was enough to send <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Valve/">Valve</a> to man the lawyer cannons over two upcoming games, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/DOTA-2/">DOTA 2</a></em> from Valve and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard-DOTA/">Blizzard DOTA </a></em>from Blizzard. The companies have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/blizzard-and-valve-settle-dota-argument-blizzard-dota-is-now-bl">reached an agreement</a>, however, which includes Blizzard renaming its game to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard-All-Stars/">Blizzard All-Stars</a></em> while retaining use of the "dota" name for noncommercial use in the fan community. Valve retains the commercial use of the name.<br />
<br />
It sounds like a little matter until you remember that <em>Warcraft III</em> was the source of the map that spawned this game type, leading to both companies developing competing versions of a sequel. <em>Blizzard All-Stars</em> currently has no release date, while <em>DOTA 2</em> is due out sometime next year and is currently in beta testing. Luckily, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/blizzard-and-valve-settle-dota-argument-blizzard-dota-is-now-bl">the terminology is only being changed on the corporate side</a>, meaning players are free to continue discussing the games as they would have anyway.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/11/blizzard-renames-blizzard-dota-to-blizzard-all-stars/">Blizzard renames Blizzard DotA to Blizzard All-Stars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 May 2012 17:30:00 EST. This week <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>'s Bashiok caused a stir over a cheeky forum post asking a fan to lower his expectations of the upcoming title. He continues posting rampantly to the forum this week to defend recent game design decisions. <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> delivered its first test build using its new deployment system, and Gaming With Gizmoh raised over $1,000 US for Child's Play with a 24-hour marathon of the beta. <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> took a look at its Filipino playerbase, while <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> was struck by a massive exploit that saw the European servers taken offline for days.<br />

Web show Extra Credits teamed up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/red-5-studios">Red 5 Studios</a> to offer its support for the studio's ambitious development plans for <a href="http://firefallthegame.com/"><em>Firefall</em></a>. The month-long <a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/"><em>Blacklight: Retribution</em></a> open beta started today, with the introduction of three beta events with prizes and a new video tutorial for the Heavy Metal map. <a href="http://riseofimmortals.com/"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> celebrated its first anniversary of unveiling the game to the public this week and offered a sneak peek of its creepy new Immortal Azcadelia. This week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Report/">The MMO Report</a>, Casey delivers a Valentine's Day rant before moving on to the latest news -- namely, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World's</a></em> release date rumors, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Wakfu/">Wakfu's</a></em> PvP, and the sunset of sci-fi sandbox <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Earthrise/">Earthrise</a></em>. He also rounds up the latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> headlines, noting the lawsuit against <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Valve/">Valve</a>, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft's</a></em> recent sub losses, and the "valiant and pointless exercise" of rebuilding Azeroth in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Minecraft/">Minecraft</a></em>.<br />
<br />
Finally, Uncle Casey's Mailbag provides a forum for the debate over just how we're supposed to pronounce "<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic">SWTOR</a></em>." All this and more in the video behind the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/the-mmo-report-chocolate-makes-you-fat-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The MMO Report: Chocolate makes you fat edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/the-mmo-report-chocolate-makes-you-fat-edition/">The MMO Report: Chocolate makes you fat edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 21:00:00 EST. We also discovered new map restrictions coming to the beta that will stop players from playing with the map permanently open. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/torchlight-ii"><em>Torchlight II</em></a>'s website was overhauled this week, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runic-games">Runic Games</a> revealed that the game's beta will be starting soon. Dungeon crawler <a href="http://pathofexile.com/"><em>Path of Exile</em></a> continued its own beta this week with patch 0.9.6 and showed just how complicated its passive skill tree is with a new calculator.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/13/not-so-massively-mobas-shooters-and-dungeon-crawlers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: MOBAs, shooters, and dungeon crawlers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/13/not-so-massively-mobas-shooters-and-dungeon-crawlers/">Not So Massively: MOBAs, shooters, and dungeon crawlers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> delivered 100,000 beta keys to North American fans this week, but it also revealed that the epic death animations from the game's first gameplay reveal were actually faked and won't be in the final game. Upcoming online FPS <a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com/"><em>Blacklight: Retribution</em></a> has challenged players to play 20 ranked matchmaking games by Thursday to win an exclusive golden helmet, and <a href="http://www.massively.enjin.com/blacklightretribution">Massively still has beta keys</a> if you'd like to get involved.<br />

<a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> released its potentially overpowered new hero Berzerker this week, placing Artesia into the free hero pool for legacy accounts a week early. <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> introduced its updated AI, adding 40 champions to the bot roster for both Summoner's Rift and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dominion"><em>Dominion</em></a> co-op games. <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> released a new test version to trial experimental changes without interrupting balance testing, and dungeon crawler <a href="http://pathofexile.com/"><em>Path of Exile</em></a> showed off two new screenshots of its upcoming 0.9.6 patch. Finally, <a href="http://bloodlinechampions.com/"><em>Bloodline Champions</em></a> increased all XP gains by 50% this week in patch 2.3 and has launched a hilarious new photo content that's sure to get some questionable entries.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/06/not-so-massively-d3-cuts-death-animations-and-hon-releases-anot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: D3 cuts death animations and HoN releases another broken hero</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/06/not-so-massively-d3-cuts-death-animations-and-hon-releases-anot/">Not So Massively: D3 cuts death animations and HoN releases another broken hero</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 20:00:00 EST. It's been a quiet week for online gaming, with game studios around the world enjoying the holidays and gearing up for another year of development. The <a href="http://diablo.com/"><em>Diablo</em></a> franchise celebrated its 15th anniversary this week, but that elusive <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> release date is still unknown. The game has run into legal difficulties with South Korea's rating agencies, but this shouldn't affect the global release.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> had a quiet holiday week, issuing a reminder to players that the dodge rune removal scheduled for last week is now complete. <a href="http://www.bloodlinechampions.com/"><em>Bloodline Champions</em></a> officially released its new bloodline Stormcaller and relocated its servers to Sweden in order to improve performance. Finally, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve">Valve</a> threw hundreds of <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> beta keys into its holiday giveaway over the past week, and Massively managed to snag one.<br />

Skip past the cut for details of this week's biggest news from the world of MOBAs and other big online games that aren't quite MMOs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/not-so-massively-a-quiet-week-in-the-land-of-moba/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: A quiet week in the land of MOBA</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/not-so-massively-a-quiet-week-in-the-land-of-moba/">Not So Massively: A quiet week in the land of MOBA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Jan 2012 20:00:00 EST. If you've been checking out this year's Christmas <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> sales, you'll undoubtedly have seen the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/holidaysale/">Great Gift Pile giveaway</a>. By completing various game achievements and objectives, Steam users unlock prizes that can be anything from a lump of coal to discount vouchers or even a full copy of any game on Steam. There are reports of people winning massive prizes like Skyrim or the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve">Valve</a> complete pack, and even if you just get a lump of coal, it's still a valuable prize; seven lumps can be exchanged for a new random prize, and those left over at the end of the holiday event will count as tickets in a lottery to win a copy of every single game on Steam.<br />
<br />
While many of the achievements require the purchase of cheap indie titles, there are several ways to get your hands on a gift from the great pile absolutely free. Checking your Steam inventory page and trading any item with another user will get you two free gifts, and joining the 2011 Holiday Group will net you a third. Two more prizes can be collected by completing the Son of a Nutcracker! achievement in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spiral-knights"><em>Spiral Knights</em></a> and the All I Want for Christmas is Sewers achievement in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rusty-hearts"><em>Rusty Hearts</em></a>, both of which are free-to-play MMOs available through Steam.<br />

	A few days ago we reported that <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/valve">Valve</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/07/valves-steam-forum-security-compromised/">Steam forum security had been compromised</a>. A letter from Valve head-honcho <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/gabe-newell">Gabe Newell</a> today confirms this fact and reveals that the intruders also gained access to a Steam database that contained a ton of personal information, such as usernames, encrypted passwords, email addresses, and encrypted credit card information. Newell adds that there is currently no evidence that any of that information was actually taken by the intruders or that credit card numbers or passwords were cracked.<br />
	<br />
	Steam users will be required to change their forum passwords when the forums are opened back up. While the company claims that no Steam accounts have been compromised, if your forum password was the same as your account password, a change would likely be a good idea.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/gabe-newell-confirms-steam-security-compromise/">Gabe Newell confirms Steam security compromise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 18:15:00 EST. It's been a quiet week in the land of MOBAs, with preparations underway for <a href="http://www.dreamhack.se/dhw11/esport/">DreamHack Winter 2011 in Sweden</a> later this month. <em><a href="http://bloodlinechampions.com">Bloodline Champions</a></em> will be running its $10,000 US Alienware tournament, and <em><a href="http://dota2.com">Dota 2</a></em> joins in with the $15,000 Corsair Vengeance tournament. <em><a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com">Heroes of Newerth</a></em> is due to host the conclusion of its $30,000 MSI Beat It tournament at DreamHack, and signups begin tomorrow for the $3,000 Kingston HoNor challenge.<br />
<em><a href="http://leagueoflegends.com"><br />
League of Legends</a></em>' second competitive season approaches, and with it comes a series of summoner spell changes designed to encourage a more aggressive playstyle. Unused summoner names from season one were deleted as part of a database cleanup, opening 460,000 old names for registration. <em><a href="http://firefallthegame.com">Firefall</a></em> celebrates Halloween this week with a pumpkin-carving community roundup special featuring a giant carved pumpkin made in <em>Minecraft</em>. As <em><a href="http://blacklight.perfectworld.com">Blacklight: Retribution</a></em> continues its closed beta, developers discuss the game's high-technology battlefield and introduce a grenade that makes your opponents bluescreen.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve">Valve</a> is the latest gaming company to suffer a security breach during the hackathon that is the year 2011. What's that got to do with MMOs, you say? Well, the company's Steam digital download service offers access to a ton of our favorite virtual worlds, and it has thus far seemed relatively secure.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://kotaku.com/5856975/steam-forums-apparently-hacked">Kotaku reports</a> that the Steam forums were hacked last night, with the paper trail leading to a cracker website known as Fknowned.com. The gentlemen in question are of course denying all responsibility for the mischief, and thus far Valve has offered no comment on the situation. It's worth noting that the Steam forum account info is separate from the actual Steam service account info, but it's also likely that some users employ identical sets of credentials. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/07/valves-steam-forum-security-compromised/">Valve's Steam forum security compromised</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 17:00:00 EST. <em>Welcome to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, our weekly roundup of the top news from popular multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) and other multiplayer online games that aren't quite MMOs. Published every Monday, the column covers games such a</em><em>s </em><a href="http://www.leagueoflegends.com/">League of Legends</a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/">Heroes of Newerth</a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.riseofimmortals.com/">Rise of Immortals</a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.bloodlinechampions.com/">Bloodline Champions</a><em> and more.</em><br />
<br />
It's been a huge week for online gaming, with <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/DotA-2/">DotA 2</a></em> being shown for the first time at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gamescom/">Gamescom</a> and new details being released on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Diablo-III/">Diablo III</a></em>. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, we give out beta keys for upcoming online action game <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Brawl-Busters/">Brawl Busters</a></em> and reintroduce MMO-esque online FPS <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blacklight-Retribution/">Blacklight: Retribution</a></em>. <em>Heroes of Newerth</em> makes some controversial changes this week with patch 2.1.5, putting a free courier in every game and reorganising items in the shop.<br />
<br />
The biggest news came out of Gamescom this week was the conclusion of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Valve/">Valve's</a> massive $1.6 million US <em>DotA 2</em> tournament The International. <em>League of Legends</em> retaliated with the announcement of a $5 million US total prize fund for competitive tournaments in season two. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> also attended Gamescom to reveal new details of <em>Diablo III</em>'s difficulty settings, which will include a brand-new Inferno endgame mode designed to challenge even the best players.<br />

If you've never been to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom/">Gamescom</a> before, let's simply put it this way: It's <em>big</em>. Really, really big. Forget most any convention you've attended; this is likely to be even bigger. Billing itself as the world's largest games event, Gamescom sees well over a quarter-million fans, journalists and exhibitors crowd into the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany to check out hundreds of games and companies.<br />
<br />
Due to its size and worldwide prominence, Gamescom is a significant event for anyone following the MMO genre (and video games in general). There are plenty of MMO studios gearing up to share first looks, exclusive reveals, detailed Q&amp;A sessions, and exciting hands-on demos for attendees.<br />

The MOBA (Massively Online Battle Arena) genre has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">absolutely exploded in the past year</a>, with several hugely successful titles released based on the gameplay of popular <em>Warcraft 3</em> mod <em>Defense of the Ancients</em>. The original <em>DotA</em> mod remains one of today's most played competitive online games, and games based on it have begun to pull in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/league-of-legends-boasts-15-million-registered-players/">millions of players</a>. The big players of the industry have definitely taken notice of this fledgling genre's success, with Valve even going so far as to acquire the <em>DotA</em> brand and start work on a true sequel aimed for a 2011 release.<br />
<br />
We heard last month that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dota-2/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> is due to be previewed in a competitive tournament at August's Gamescom 2011 in Germany. In a <a href="http://blog.dota2.com/2011/08/announcing-the-international/">new announcement on the official <em>Dota 2</em> blog</a>, Valve has now revealed the incredible details of this massive tournament. 16 of the world's top classic <em>DotA</em> teams will clash in a bid to win a staggering $1,000,000 US top prize. Confirmed commentator Tobi <a href="http://forums.heroesofnewerth.com/showpost.php?p=14042297&amp;postcount=3589">has been referenced as saying</a> that the total prize pool is actually $1.6 million US, leaving a potential $600,000 for runner-up prizes. This tournament will be the first time <em>Dota 2</em> is publicly shown, and every match will be streamed live across the internet in four languages. The five-day tournament will run between August 17th and August 21st.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/08/03/not-so-massively-extra-dota-2-to-be-unveiled-with-1-6-million/">Not So Massively Extra: Dota 2 to be unveiled with $1.6 million US tournament</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/not-so-massively-dota-2-is-going-to-be-freaking-awesome/"> Last week we brought you</a> the exciting news that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve/">Valve's</a> eagerly awaited MOBA <em><a href="http://www.dota2.com/">Dota 2</a></em> would be demonstrated at August's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom/">Gamescom</a> convention. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/League-of-Legends">League of Legends</a></em> finally released its first female tank champion, Leona the Radiant Dawn, last week, leaving only Skarner to be released from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/11/not-so-massively-extra-league-of-legends-reveals-three-new-cham/">the trio of champions</a> revealed at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2011/">E3</a>. <em><a href="http://aida.gamerkraft.com/default.aspx">Aida Arenas</a></em> had its closed beta unexpectedly postponed indefinitely, with no reason given or timeline for when the beta schedule might resume. Finally, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/not-so-massively-extra-our-impressions-of-rise-of-immortals/">we got some hands-on time in the <em>Rise of Immortals</em> open beta</a> and delivered our first impressions of this promising new MOBA.<br />

In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, we get a first look at <em>League of Legends</em>' mysterious upcoming champion Wukong the Monkey King and check out two more awesome <em>LoL</em> parody songs. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/s2-games/">S2 Games</a> dropped the price of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/heroes-of-newerth"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> to $10 this week, but inexplicably failed to state when the deal will end or if the price drop is permanent. We take a look at <em>HoN</em>'s latest hero Revenant, revisit <a href="http://realmofthetitans.aeriagames.com/"><em>Realm of the Titans</em></a>' unique Titan's Eye map, and check out some new <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bloodline-champions">Bloodline Champions</a> </em>tournament changes coming in the game's next competitive season. This week we also briefly introduce <em><a href="http://www.worldofbattles.com/en">World of Battles: Morningstar</a></em>, an innovative new take on MOBA gameplay using traditional RTS style unit control and huge armies.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/not-so-massively-diabetic-champions-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: Diabetic champions edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/not-so-massively-diabetic-champions-edition/">Not So Massively: Diabetic champions edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST. <em>Welcome to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, our weekly roundup of the top news from popular multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) and other multiplayer online games that aren't quite MMOs. In the last few years, the PC game market has seen a resurgence of competitive and co-operative online games. Some fit neatly into the category of MMO and others are traditional multiplayer match-based games, but the lines between the two have begun to blur. MOBAs and similar online games offer ongoing development a level of persistence that's closer to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars">Guild Wars</a></em> than <em><a href="http://store.steampowered.com/css">Counterstrike</a>,</em> putting them firmly in the gray area we love to talk about in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>.<br />

	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/02/not-so-massively-character-reveals-e-sports-tournaments-and-l/">Last week we brought news</a> of an ongoing legal battle between <em><a href="http://www.firefallthegame.com/">FireFall</a></em> developer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/red5-studios">Red 5</a> and its publisher <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/webzen">Webzen</a>. Both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Heroes-of-Newerth"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bloodline-Champions"><em>Bloodline Champions</em></a> announced details of upcoming sponsored competitive tournaments for players with cash prizes. New details were revealed for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/League-of-Legends"><em>League of Legends</em></a>' female tank champion Leona, <em>Heroes of Newerth</em>'s ranged anti-juking hero Emerald Warden and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rise-of-Immortals"><em>Rise of Immortals</em></a> ranged damage-dealing immortal Balak.<br />

	In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, we look forward to <em><a href="http://www.dota2.com/">Dota 2</a></em> gameplay being showcased at next month's Gamescom convention and tell you how you could be in with a chance to win one of five <em>Heroes of Newerth</em> account keys worth $30 US. We also finally get to see <em>LoL</em> champion Leona in action this week, and enjoy two helpings of <em>LoL</em> fanart, cosplay and original music in Summoner Showcases 35 and 36. Finally, we find out that the <em>Aida Arenas</em> closed beta has been postponed indefinitely, and we get some hands-on time with the <em>Rise of Immortals</em> open beta.</div>

Well someone's certainly playing <a href="http://playgodsandheroes.com/"><em>Gods &amp; Heroes: Rome Rising</em></a>, the newly launched fantasy MMORPG from <a href="http://www.heatwave.com/">Heatwave Interactive</a>. It's a safe bet that said someones are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/gods-and-heroes-going-worldwide-on-steam-this-week/">playing via Steam</a>, as <a href="http://www.valvesoftware.com/">Valve's</a> digital download platform is reporting that the Roman mythology-flavored MMO <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Massively%20Multiplayer/">outsold all challengers</a> over the weekend.<br />
<br />
Despite some predictions of a lukewarm reception due to the glut of fantasy MMOs and a hefty box fee (as well as a subscription model), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/heatwave-interactive">Heatwave's</a> game sold well enough to outpace <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> as well as <a href="http://guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <a href="http://dcuniverse.com"><em>DC Universe</em></a>, and <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>, all of which could be had at or lower than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gods-and-heroes"><em>Gods &amp; Heroes'</em></a> $39.99 price point.<br />
<br />
Is it a case of a better-than-expected game or another example of how MMO players will buy anything and everything if it's new and shiny? Let us know what you think in the comments.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/28/gods-and-heroes-outsells-rift-on-steam-claims-weekend-top-spot/">Gods &amp; Heroes outsells RIFT on Steam, claims weekend top spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://playgodsandheroes.com/"><em>Gods &amp; Heroes: Rome Rising</em></a> is coming to <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/">Steam</a>. The mythology-inspired MMORPG, launched yesterday by <a href="http://www.heatwave.com/">Heatwave Interactive</a>, is now available on <a href="http://www.valvesoftware.com/">Valve's</a> North American digital distribution platform and will available worldwide later this week (June 24th, to be exact).<br />
<br />
Aside from the convenience of avoiding a retail purchase, Steam customers will also receive a traditional platform-exclusive in-game item, in this case a mythical minion called a Gorpal. The Gorpal is a damage-dealing Phorcid pet that "<em>protects players by fighting with claws and a poisonous bite,</em>" according to a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/heatwave-interactive">Heatwave</a> press release.<br />

Through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/rift-beta-six-is-coming-up-and-weve-got-your-key/">regular closed beta events</a> and frequent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/24/rift-reveals-a-new-dungeon-with-the-fall-of-lantern-hook/">information reveals</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion-worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> has really been pushing the word out on its upcoming fantasy MMO <a href="http://www.riftgame.com/en/"><em>RIFT</em></a>. The game's marketing campaign has taken a bit of an unexpected turn today with the announcement of a promotional partnership between the upcoming MMO and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve/">Valve</a>'s <a href="http://www.teamfortress.com/"><em>Team Fortress 2</em></a>. Steam users who pre-order <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT</em></a> during the month of February or who have already purchased the game through Steam, will be given two limited-edition weapons in <em>Team Fortress 2.</em><br />
<br />
The "Sharpened Volcano Fragment" and "Sun-on-a-stick" are exclusive melee weapons available only to <em>RIFT</em> pre-order customers. In return, Valve is adding a new achievement to <em>Team Fortress 2</em> that unlocks an exclusive item in <em>RIFT</em>. The Riftwalker achievement will grant <em>TF2</em> players a code, which can be redeemed through the <em>RIFT</em> account management page. An exclusive headcrab-based headpiece, the "Well Spun Hat," will then be delivered in-game during <em>RIFT</em>'s headstart period for pre-order customers on February 24th. This unusual promotion has left many of us here at Massively scratching our heads in confusion, but with the popularity of Valve's <em>Team Fortress 2</em>, it could prove to be a very successful move.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/03/rift-pre-orders-rewarded-with-exclusive-team-fortress-2-unlocks/">RIFT pre-orders rewarded with exclusive Team Fortress 2 unlocks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. Think the PC is losing its grip as the dominant platform when it comes to gaming innovation? Not so fast, says <a href="http://www.valvesoftware.com/">Valve's</a> Gabe Newell. In fact, he even cites MMOs as a leading cause of the PC platform's continued innovation. And when Newell speaks, gamers and game makers listen, as his company is an industry heavyweight responsible for the likes of <em>Half-Life</em>, <em>Left 4 Dead</em>, and <em>Counterstrike</em> (not to mention the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/about/">Steam</a> digital distribution platform). <br />
<br />
Yesterday, at the <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/">Consumer Electronics Show</a> in Las Vegas, Newell sung the praises of Intel's new GPU/CPU and also <a href="http://www.gamersmint.com/gabe-newell-pc-still-the-the-centre-of-innovation-for-gaming">offered a counterpoint</a> to those who feel that consoles like the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 have overtaken the PC as industry catalysts.<br />
<br />
"<em>We see [the PC] as the center of innovation of everything that's going on, whether it's microtransactions, MMOs, free-to-play, or something like </em><a href="http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=291549705119">CityVille</a><em> which -- after its first month -- has 84 million people playing</em>," Newell said. "<em>To us, this is just an indication of why open platforms are where innovations are going to occur</em>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/valves-gabe-newell-recognizes-the-innovation-of-mmos/">Valve's Gabe Newell recognizes the innovation of MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 23:00:00 EST. You never get everything you want over the holiday. That's inevitable. That's also why <a href="http://store.steampowered.com">Steam</a>, the digital distribution service that's become all but ubiquitous, always takes the chance to offer steep discounts for players once the holiday season starts up in earnest. This year has already seen the rollout of some big sales, with <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>, <a href="http://www.aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.globalagendagame.com"><em>Global Agenda</em></a> all available for discounted prices -- prices in excess of 50% off.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em>'s complete collection is being offered for $4.99 up through January 3rd. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Aion/">Aion</a></em> is available for just $10 (a 75% reduction and the steepest discount of the lot) through January 2nd, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Global-Agenda/">Global Agenda</a></em> can be picked up for a $15 outlay with no subscription fee. It's a wide enough range of games that nearly anyone will find something worth picking up, and on the off chance you don't see your dream game listed, keep your eye on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Steam/">Steam</a> over the next few days. It's better to give than receive, yes, but it's even better to do both.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/steam-offering-discounts-on-mmos-for-the-holidays/">Steam offering discounts on MMOs for the holidays</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 20:00:00 EST. One of the best compliments you can give a creator is to make an homage to his work. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/hyperspace-beacon-dont-be-surprised-if-your-website-is-mention/">title of one of the Hyperspace Beacons</a> was an homage to <a href="http://torocast.com">TOROCast</a> articles. It's a way to tell the creator, "You're doing a good job. Keep up the good work." Not to mention, homages are a lot of fun. In fact, my first published work was an homage to the work of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dickson">Charles Dickens</a>. I wrote a story about what happened to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Cratchit">Cratchit</a> children. But what happens when an homage goes too far?<br />
<br />
Every once in a while, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hyperspace-beacon">Hyperspace Beacon</a> takes a side track and asks about ideas that should end up on the cutting room floor. We all know games have concepts that just don't work. <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> will be no exception. This little humorous segment is called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/WHTNMIISWTORBKOLIPW/">We hope this never makes it into <em>SWTOR</em>, but knowing our luck, it probably will</a> -- or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/WHTNMIISWTORBKOLIPW/">WHTNMIISWTORBKOLIPW</a>, for short.<br />
<br />
Follow me after the break to see what "homageneous" ideas should never make it into the release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a>, but knowing our luck, they will anyway.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/hyperspace-beacon-homage-to-we-hope-this-never-makes-it-into-sw/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Homage to we hope this never makes it into SWTOR, but knowing our luck, it probably will</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/hyperspace-beacon-homage-to-we-hope-this-never-makes-it-into-sw/">Hyperspace Beacon: Homage to we hope this never makes it into SWTOR, but knowing our luck, it probably will</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. The creators of <a href="http://vindictus.com"><em>Vindictus</em></a>, or Addictus (as it's been called by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/shawn-schuster">certain Editors-in-Chief</a>), have thought to inspire us to play their action MMO by launching another trailer. The free-to-play game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/27/vindictus-launch-day-roundup/">launched two weeks ago</a> as the first real-physics based MMO. This game that features constant twitchy combat, also, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/02/vindictus-takes-a-look-at-casting-with-evie/">recently announced a new ranged-class</a> giving the gameplay a completely different dynamic. The trailer magnifies the intensity of this unique gaming engine by slowing down and reversing much of the in-game shots in the video. All creatures and player characters affect the environment, as well as their intended target. Walls are mashed. Buildings fall. The earth is crumbled beneath mighty weapons.<br />
<br />
If violence and passion fuel your gameplay then <a href="http://www.nexon.net/">Nexon</a> invites you to try out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vindictus/">Vindictus</a> for yourself at the <a href="http://vindictus.com">official website</a>. It will cost you nothing to try it out for yourself, and you may just find a new world you'll love to explore. Fix your eyes on this film featuring a frenzied flash into this fantasy realm after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/vindictus-entices-players-with-a-dynamic-new-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Vindictus entices players with a dynamic new trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/vindictus-entices-players-with-a-dynamic-new-trailer/">Vindictus entices players with a dynamic new trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 09:00:00 EST. There's currently no word on refunds or compensation for those who purchased the ill-fated urban crime MMOFPS from retail outlets or other digital shops.<br />

[<strong>Editor's Note:</strong> Having just gone through this process myself, I can tell you that it's easy and virtually painless. Simply visit <a href="http://www.ea.com">www.ea.com</a>, choose your country of origin, visit the support link in the upper right hand corner, and log into your EA account. Once that's done, click the "contact us/email us" button to create a new question to ask the EA support representatives. Select APB as the game in question and tell them that you own the game, where you bought it, and that you'd like to take advantage of their refund offer. The representative will ask you to make a list of games you'd like (pre-order titles are excluded and only games in the EA store are being offered) and that's it! Once you send your list, they'll give you a game (most likely your first choice) and you can download it using their instructions. ~Seraphina]<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/ea-giving-free-game-to-disgruntled-apb-buyers/">EA giving free game to disgruntled APB buyers [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. The holidays are officially here (if you're a retail chain, then they've been here for about a month) and so it's time to start looking for deals to give to either your MMO-playing loved ones or, well, yourself! Shopping can be a pretty big hassle, especially if you're not accustomed to hunting for the best deals. So, we've gone and outlined the season's new releases, as well as some places you can hope to find sales in the coming weeks.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/26/massivelys-black-friday-mmo-sales-guide/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively's Black Friday MMO sales guide</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/26/massivelys-black-friday-mmo-sales-guide/">Massively's Black Friday MMO sales guide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 26 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST. Where did you buy your last MMO and where will you buy your next? Chances are you'll be <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/search/?genre=Massively%20Multiplayer&amp;category1=998">getting it on Steam</a> or <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/steam-has-70-per-cent-of-pc-pie">so the story goes</a> according to Brad Wardell, head honcho over at Stardock. We're inclined to agree with his assertion that Valve's digital distribution platform holds roughly 70% of the PC market as many of us here at Massively have been buying our MMOs -- and PC games in general -- on the service for some time now.<br />
<br />
So is it a good thing or a bad thing for MMO players? Our experience with purchasing games like <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a> and <a href="http://www.champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a> through the service has been positive, and so long as no complications arise via patches or other client issues we see no reason to stop utilizing the service unless better offers appear.<br />
<br />
The only real MMO-related issue we can see is with collector's editions. Some games offer a different set of bonus material for people who opt out of the physical copy and go for the digital, but certain items like art books, mouse pads and other bric-a-brac can't be delivered through a wire... at least, not until sometime in the far flung future.<br />
<br />
Now, as far as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/06/modern-warfare-2-refused-by-digital-distribution-retailers-stea/">the Steamworks integration issue goes</a>... Well, that's a whole other sack of fishes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/steam-estimated-at-selling-to-70-of-pc-market/">Steam estimated at selling to 70% of PC market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 20:00:00 EST. Sometimes I can actually hear the barking, crowing and general upheaval of a community to the extent that my knee jerk response is to consume the cacophony of squawking in a great ball of churning fire. Thankfully, I always resist that urge, and much for the better. That doesn't mean I'm unwilling to share those initial feelings here, though.<br /><br />There's a good reason I'm sharing an otherwise personal knee jerk reaction. Too many people don't deny the evil voice growling incessantly from the back of the mind. They allow that pure id impulse to take the journey from their -- quite temporarily deranged -- minds, down their limbs, through their fingertips and into the comments section of many a website.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/the-digital-continuum-outrageous-outcomes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Outrageous outcomes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/the-digital-continuum-outrageous-outcomes/">The Digital Continuum: Outrageous outcomes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 09:00:00 EST. You, much like myself, may have had summer MMO plans a month or so ago. But like many things in life, circumstances changed and both <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a> and <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.jumpgateevolution.com">Jumpgate Evolution</a> were met <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/jumpgate-evolution-delayed-no-new-launch-date-in-sight/">with delays</a> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/16/champions-online-pushes-release-date-back/">their schedules</a> -- making any plans to play them over the summer null.<br /><br />It's a bummer, but not all is lost. Another thing I'm certain we all share is our love of gaming in general. I've been thinking of a list of games I plan to play through this summer in lieu of shiny new MMOs to delve into, with an emphasis on filling the void left by a lack <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NetDevil">NetDevil's</a> still forthcoming titles. I'm sure I'll play more than just three, but these are the ones I'll definitely play the most of overall.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/the-digital-continuum-summertime-mmo-alternatives/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Summertime MMO alternatives</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/the-digital-continuum-summertime-mmo-alternatives/">The Digital Continuum: Summertime MMO alternatives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 01 Jun 2009 10:00:00 EST. I firmly believe persistent online games have a lot more to offer, and every so often that fact rises up to the front of my thoughts by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/14/wrup-lost-in-unknown-space-edition/">games like <span style="font-style: italic;">Resident Evil 5</span></a>. If a cooperative and ostensibly zombie game can exist, then why not a massively version? Let me present to you, the reader, my vision of a game that could quite feasibly exist in just four or five years time:<br /><br />The zombie apocalypse MMO.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/14/the-digital-continuum-zombies-zombies-zombies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Zombies, zombies, zombies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/14/the-digital-continuum-zombies-zombies-zombies/">The Digital Continuum: Zombies, zombies, zombies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 14 Mar 2009 15:00:00 EST. First <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/red-eagle-games-to-develop-the-wheel-of-time-mmo/">announced late last year</a>, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time"><em>Wheel of Time</em></a> MMO is not only in the works, but <a href="http://www.ea.com/language">Electronic Arts</a> has just confirmed their involvement in the distribution of the game. This includes more than just the MMO though, as <a href="http://redeaglegames.net/">Red Eagle Games</a> will be developing a whole line of products which will launch on "all major videogame platforms," including the PC , consoles, wireless devices and handhelds.<br /><br />This deal will allow EA to publish and distribute these games with other third-party developers such as <a href="http://www.valvesoftware.com/">Valve</a>, <a href="http://www.harmonixmusic.com/">Harmonix</a> and <a href="http://www.idsoftware.com/">id</a>. It will also provide "a blockbuster launch on the global stage" for Red Eagle to promote their games, according to EA Partners senior VP and general manager David DeMartini, and will hopefully help in funding the product down the line. Check out the press release in its entirety just after the cut below.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/ea-signs-on-to-distribute-the-wheel-of-time-mmo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EA signs on to distribute the Wheel of Time MMO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/ea-signs-on-to-distribute-the-wheel-of-time-mmo/">EA signs on to distribute the Wheel of Time MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 12:00:00 EST.
