Just think about that title for a second. Of all the games genres you've played, isn't it MMOs that feel most like carbon copies of one another? Level systems, the character creation process and class archetypes are nearly universal, with hundreds of games sharing the same characteristics. Don't you sometimes wish that MMO developers would step back and reassess the genre they have collectively created? This week, as part of Massively's "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/redefining-mmos/">Redefining MMOs</a>" series, it's my turn to muse on a topic and I've chosen to look as whether it's time the MMO mould (or mold, as my American editors would say) should be broken and re-examined.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"> <br /> Many aspects of MMOs, such as classes, levelling, raids and bosses, endure simply because they work. After all, if it ain't broke why fix it? But sometimes it feels like you need a breath of fresh air, to step back and smell the roses. This is especially the case when carbon copy MMOs start being rolled out. In the last few months I've tried MMO after MMO and can literally play each one blindfolded. Mages are mages, warriors are warriors and clerics by any other name are still priests. While the archetypes of these classes -- the healer, the tank, the caster, the melee damage-dealer and the pet-toting badass -- differ slightly between genres and titles, they are part of a formula that seems to define the MMO genre.<br /> <br /> Skip past the cut to read the rest of the article<br /> </div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/redefining-mmos-breaking-the-mould/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/06/redefining-mmos-breaking-the-mould/">Redefining MMOs: Breaking the Mould</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 09:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/turpstervision/">TurpsterVision</a> is back with vengeance now with four episodes every month focusing on one MMO at a time. This month, along with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/">the rest of the Massively team</a>, we are venturing deep into Middle Earth and exploring the depths of the Mines of Moria.</em><br /><br />Hey folks, it's good to be back; MMOs just wouldn't be the same without TurpsterVision! Today we are taking a look at <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria</em></a>'s new <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Legendary_Items_Guide">Legendary Weapons</a>. I've often wanted to have <a href="http://www.medievalware.com/LOTR-Sting-Sword-p/45uc1264.htm">a sword glow blue and warn me when danger is near</a>. To be honest I'd settle for an <em>iPhone</em> app that would do the same thing. But fortunately for me I don't have to settle for anything less than the real deal, albeit a virtual-real deal.<br /><br />Moria not only granted us two <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/why-you-should-be-playing-lord-of-the-rings-online-the-warden/">new classes</a>, which I'll be exploring one at a time over the next two weeks, but it also granted players the ability to gain Legendary weapons of old which they can level up alongside their character. But enough reading about it, this is TurpsterVision! Watch on after the break...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/turpstervision-weapon-of-choice/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision - Weapon of Choice</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/turpstervision-weapon-of-choice/">TurpsterVision - Weapon of Choice</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 13:00:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/mark-turpin/"><span style="font-style: italic;">I</span></a> am no stranger to the <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/"><span style="font-style: italic;">iPhone</span></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/turpstervision-bricking-it/">the addictive game that dominates</a> said<span style="font-style: italic;"> iPhone</span>, <a href="http://aurorafeint.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aurora Feint</span></a>. When we had an email come along letting us know that a follow up was being released, I put my iPhone down and picked up a normal phone (it had buttons on it - it freaked me out!) and spoke with Danielle, Peter and Jason, the people behind the smash hit <em>iPhone</em> app <em>Aurora Feint: The Arena</em>, follow up to <em>Aurora Feint: The Beginning</em>, and asked a few questions about this platform defining MMO experience.<br /><br />They hadn't slept in 36 hours but some how still managed to get through 30 minuets talking with me about their game and still remain incredibly passionate and excited about it's release. Their first title got twenty-four hundred reviews, four and a half stars on the Apple App Store and one million downloads. Their latest title has a lot to live up to.<br /><br /><em>Aurora Feint: The Arena</em> is the <em>iPhone/<a href="http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/">iPod Touch</a>'s</em> first 'Asynchronous' Massively Multi-Player RPG. It's a bit of a mouthful, so lets break it down (Ed. Drop that beat T!). Being 'Asynchronous means that when dueling another player in <em>Aurora Feint: The Arena</em> they aren't playing you directly. Instead you compete through taking a trip down on to the summoning circle and rustling up yourself a Ghost. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aurora-feint-2-the-arena/">Aurora Feint 2 - The Arena</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aurora-feint-2-the-arena/#1181261"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/title-screen_thumbnail.png" alt="Aurora Feint: The Arena" title="Aurora Feint: The Arena" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aurora-feint-2-the-arena/#1181244"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/basic-concept_thumbnail.png" alt="Aurora Feint: The Arena - How To" title="Aurora Feint: The Arena - How To" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aurora-feint-2-the-arena/#1181267"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/powers_thumbnail.png" alt="Aurora Feint: The Arena - RPG Elements" title="Aurora Feint: The Arena - RPG Elements" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aurora-feint-2-the-arena/#1181264"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/world-map-2_thumbnail.png" alt="Aurora Feint: The Arena - The World Map" title="Aurora Feint: The Arena - The World Map" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aurora-feint-2-the-arena/#1181259"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/mine_thumbnail.png" alt="Aurora Feint: The Arena - Where you spent most of your time" title="Aurora Feint: The Arena - Where you spent most of your time" /></a></div><br /><br />Check out the gallery above for some in-game action from the hit smash and join me below the break where you can read a little more on my thoughts of this new venture for MMOs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/aurora-feint-the-arena/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Understanding Aurora Feint: The Arena</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/aurora-feint-the-arena/">Understanding Aurora Feint: The Arena</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. <em>First up, great to be back! I have returned! When we last left our hero I was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/turpstervision-oh-and-one-more-ding/">battling off legions of lowbies</a> on my quest to become a raid boss of Epic proportions. I have so much to tell you all, as I recently discovered the existence of 'T-chlorians' in all living things (They continually speak to us, telling us the will of the T. When you learn to quiet your mind, you'll hear them speaking to you). I have also proven once and for all that '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_Cake">Jaffa Cakes</a>' are indeed cakes - so everyone's a winner!<br /><br />To mark my return I have chosen a <a href="http://macenstein.com/default/archives/1523">controversial</a> game; <a href="http://aurorafeint.com/"><em>Aurora Feint The Beginning</em></a>. An MMO in the making? Or just the reason that I now have RSI and haven't showered in four weeks? There is only one way to find out ... click through below the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/turpstervision-bricking-it/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision : Bricking It</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/turpstervision-bricking-it/">TurpsterVision : Bricking It</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Aug 2008 15:00:00 EST. <em><br /></em>I've made my name here at Massively reviewing MMOs; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/turpstervision/">it's what I do</a>. This week brought to my attention that not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/exteel/">all the games </a>here at Massively are as massive as you might believe - no I haven't gone and reviewed a game where you play as a tiny ant fighting other tiny ants...on a grain of sand. Though I must admit that it sounds like a totally awesome idea! It would rock, so consider it copyrighted. Instead, using my patented Random Augmented Nuclear Dart Yaw machine, or the R.A.N.D.Y Machine for short, I have managed to select a game that I don't think quite belongs here.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/turpstervision-an-mm-no/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision: An MM-No?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/turpstervision-an-mm-no/">TurpsterVision: An MM-No?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 19:30:00 EST. This time around I've decided to have a look at <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa</span></a>. I've heard a few good things about this title, but to be honest, I've heard far more bad things. I am not one to make up my mind on a game before I've played it, so I went down to my local store and picked up a copy. It just so happened that the Collector's Edition of the game was cheaper than the standard edition - go figure. I'm not complaining since I get a nifty little <a href="http://tabularasa.wikia.com/wiki/Boo_bot">floating robot non-combat pet</a> that follows me around!<br /><br />To see the review as always you have to take the step into the void and join us on the other side of the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/turpstervision-did-i-mention-there-is-a-war-going-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision: Did I mention there is a war going on?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/turpstervision-did-i-mention-there-is-a-war-going-on/">TurpsterVision: Did I mention there is a war going on?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 10:00:00 EST. <br />After last week's trouncing I decided I would have to find a friendlier bunch of gamers to have a laugh with and try to have an insight on what playing their game is like. What I found surprised me. I wasn't expecting to see what I saw, the love and affection that these people give out, to complete strangers half the time, of all different shapes and cup sizes, it really warms the heart.<br /><br />Sure they get a lot of grief from gamers, mostly for it being a game, or for the amount of adults-only content continually poked at by the media. But I am not here to judge, I am here to review (<em>Ed: Turpster, judge is a synonym for review.</em>) On with the video! (<em>Ed: Turpster, who is Ed? Howdy folks, it's great to be home. Sorry for my prolonged absence. I would love to tell you why I wasn't able to produce the internet's favorite 'funny' over the past 3 weeks, but unfortunately if I told you I would have to kill you -- and I am far too busy "killin' mofo's" in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/grand-theft-mmo/"><span style="font-style: italic;">GTA 4</span></a> to have time to kill you all as well! <br /><br />So down to business, review time, and let me just state that I don't like giving bad reviews -- not because they can upset fans or developers, but because it means I've had a bad time reviewing the game in the first place. <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/">EverQuest</a> </span>was the granddaddy of them all before <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/index.xml"><span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span></a><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>came along. <a href="http://everquest2.station.sony.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EverQuest II</span></a> had a lot to live up to, and for this mild-mannered video blogger, it just couldn't quite manage it. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> was released shortly after and this probably stopped <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><span style="font-style: italic;">EQ2</span></a> ever becoming fun for me; I like having people to play with.<br /><br />Check out the video, make your own mind up about the game, you are all far more intelligent than me, so I will trust your opinions and past experiences over my ever so limited (but ever so painful) trial of the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/turpstervision-return-of-the-king/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision: Return of the King</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/turpstervision-return-of-the-king/">TurpsterVision: Return of the King</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. <br />I really hoped that I haven't peaked as an MMO reviewer, because this week's episode, complete with costumes and musical accompaniment, might be the best TV yet. This week our friendly co-lead blogger, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/mike-schramm/">Mike Schramm</a>, punished me by having me review what many regard as an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/a-first-look-at-runescape/">absolutely terrible game</a>.<br /><br />With that said we invite you to join us after the break to see if Turpster can survive against such a title and hopefully answer the question on the lips of players around the world: Can Turpster really sing? For some people out there they have been going through withdraw symptoms since my absence on this week's <a href="http://www.wcradio.com/archives.php?selectArchive=766&amp;autoplay=1">WoW Insider Show</a>. Have no fear, for Super Turpster is here! I have tried to make it up to you guys, even though my schedule is whooping my butt. <br />Hello and thanks for joining me again for another fun filled feature here on Massively! I love my job, it totally rocks, I get to have all sorts of fun and hopefully you guys enjoy it a little bit too. I normally am happy with you guys turning up and leaving the odd comment or two below though this week I have to ask you for a favor. On Saturday, just after <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/category/wow-insider-show/">the WoW Insider Show</a>, I was chatting to everyone's favorite <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/02/18/counting-up-1-2-3-4-6-more-shaman-complaints/">Shaman <strike>Crybaby</strike> Crusader</a> who was just heading off to a <a href="http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/whatisdnd">D&amp;D game</a>. I then posed the question to him, "which was the most awesome and manly of DnD characters." Obviously I chose the correct answer and <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/bloggers/mike-schramm/">Mike</a> chose the wrong one. Let me know which way you swing in your comments: <strong><a href="http://wizards.com/dnd/images/moi_gallery/91047.jpg">Bard</a> or <a href="http://www.harrymedia.com/img/data/media/2/x_studio_08dumbledore.jpg">Wizard</a>? <em>Every Tuesday think "T" for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/mark-turpin/">Turpster </a>and take the "a" in "day", capitalise it, remove the little bit in the middle, turn it upside down and you get a "V". Put the two together and you'll have TV for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/turpstervision/">TurpsterVision</a> -- the best Internet video podcast on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a>! (Nevermind that business about it being the only video podcast on Massively...) Check it out after the break!<br /><br /></em>If you want to know how EPIC the intro for TV would have been had Turpster not had the help <span chatdir="1"><span chatindex="966">from the fantastic, awesome, uber-talented, </span></span><a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/02/11/wow-insider-show-episode-24-rp-raiding-and-the-unforgotten-re/"> Johnny Voruz</a> from <a href="http://www.urealms.com">Unforgotten Realms</a> then be sure to check out the extra video we included after the break! We'd like to note that Turpster is a highly trained professional, and as such, you should not attempt to recreate anything you see in TurpsterVision!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/turpstervision-dancing-in-the-endless-forest/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TurpsterVision : Dancing in the Endless Forest [Updated]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/turpstervision-dancing-in-the-endless-forest/">TurpsterVision : Dancing in the Endless Forest [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 13:00:00 EST.
