The team behind <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> is about to let you play in the sandbox with your friends. <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/1117462?ref=backer_project_update">The most recent update on the game's Kickstarter page</a> includes multiplayer support so that you can built shelters with all of your friends. Moreover, this update adds in non-blocky voxel support. You won't just build houses out of dirt blocks; you'll build smooth, sprawling mansions! Out of, um, dirt. That part needs a bit of an update.<br />

You can check out the video just past the break for a comprehensive look at all of the features being added with this next patch to the alpha client. There are also several bug fixes and usability improvements for the client, including tweaks to rid the game of issues with small rocks and seed growth and improvements to tool use factors. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-untitled-game/"><em>The Untitled Game</em></a>, better known as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tug/">TUG</a></em>, is one of the many recent titles that have earned a small crowdfunding fortune by shouting the word "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/sandbox/">sandbox</a>" as loud as the internet will allow. The game's initial Kickstarter campaign raised $293,000; launching on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/steam-early-access/">Steam's Early Access</a> marketplace helped <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nerd-kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> rake in an unspecified amount of additional dollars. The studio had a bold plan for an open-world, innovative crafting MMORPG, and it appeared as though players were ready to pay for it.<br />
<br />
Things haven't gone so swimmingly since then. Funding issues in late 2014 forced the studio to lay off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/09/26/tug-cuts-its-staff-in-half-to-keep-moving-forward/">around half of its staff</a>. Many MMO industry followers have been wondering whether the project will ever be released or it's just another crowdfunded pipe dream.<br />

I took a look at <em>TUG </em>on the show floor at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-south-2015/">PAX South 2015</a> and talked to COO Brennan Priest about crowdfunding, layoffs, and killing things with axes. Yesterday, the first stage of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tug/"><em>TUG's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2015/01/19/tug-is-pushing-out-multiplayer-updates/">multiplayer went online</a> with its 0.8.1 alpha patch.  Players can now bump into each other in both survival and creative modes.  But wait -- there's more!  The patch also sports a brand-new terrain engine, a new UI, better mod capabilities, additional AI characters, and a handy return stone.<br />

The <em>TUG </em>team will be at booth #1483 at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-South-2015/">PAX South</a> this weekend and will be selling access to the game at a discount for the duration of the convention. The multiplayer lifestyle will be all the rage in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tug/"><em>TUG</em></a> in the coming weeks, as the devs have said that they're preparing to push updates out to get more people playing together. Survival and creative modes <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/1099838?ref=backer_project_update">will both be getting multiplayer love</a>, although the team has asked for players to help spot and report bugs during this testing cycle.<br />
<br />
The team did warn that these builds will start small: "Multiplayer in this iteration is still fairly early, so don't expect crazy furry parties just yet. With more time and more tech, the experience and player count will improve. 	<li><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Shroud-of-the-Avatar/">Shroud of the Avatar</a></em> got a nice big update for the holidays as Release 13, um, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/12/22/shroud-of-the-avatar-drops-release-13-for-the-holidays/">released</a>. The development team also rolled out the game's plans <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/12/28/shroud-of-the-avatar-lays-out-plans-for-early-2015/">through early 2015</a>, so you know there's stuff in the pipeline.</li>
	<li><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Tanks/">World of Tanks</a></em> rolled update 9.5 <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/12/22/world-of-tanks-9-5-update-detailed-in-new-trailer-review-vid/">onto the live servers</a>. It includes British tanks and a new map! Who doesn't love those things?</li>
	<li>After some worries regarding its future, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> has confirmed that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/12/26/tugs-investment-deal-goes-through/">more investment capital is secured</a>, thus placing fan concerns about the future of the project to rest for a little while.</li>
	<li><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Marvel-Heroes/">Marvel Heroes</a></em> goes <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/12/27/get-the-full-scoop-on-marvel-heroes-venom/">just a little bit crazy for Venom</a> and all of his hastily added brain-eating ways. It's like the 90s Spider-books all over again.</li>
	<li>Some holiday or another took place over the week. One of the big ones. Halloween, maybe? We weren't paying close attention.</li>

After all the stress that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> went through with a series of layoffs and funding issues, it almost seemed like too much to hope that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> would actually secure the investors they were looking for.  But good news does come around this time of year.  The game <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/1092312">has its additional funding secure</a>, which means that it's out of the woods, at least for now.<br />
<br />
The multiplayer portion of the game continues in heavy development (there's a preview video just past the break) and supporters are implored to really go to town and help find bugs in that build.  Players are also encouraged to check out the Nerd Kingdom booth at the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-South/">PAX South</a>. Developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> has been fairly quiet since its announcement in September that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/09/26/tug-cuts-its-staff-in-half-to-keep-moving-forward/">half of its team was being let go</a> in order to keep development moving on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em>. The good news is that the needed investors might be right around the corner. <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/1071671">An update on the game's Kickstarter page</a> notes that the team is entering what appear to be final talks with a potential investor, ensuring that the team has enough money to finish the game. The update stresses the fact that said investor is not looking to alter the development process or compromise the team's vision for the title.<br />

in terms of actual development, the game's multiplayer mode is coming together. There are certain announcements that never inspire confidence, like saying that you've had to remove half of the team working on a project. That's the announcement that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a>'s</em> developers recently <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/997852">dropped on the community</a>. An investor that the team had been counting on provided terms that would have meant losing control of the project, so <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> chose to decline the funding. This might have been a great choice from a moral stance perspective, but it also meant that the team had to be pruned to keep the project financially viable.<br />
<br />
For fans, the immediate downside is that the game will be running a bit later with its Kickstarter rollouts than previously scheduled. An early version of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tug/"><em>TUG's</em></a> alchemy system has made it into the game.  "Sacrifice your energy for the love of magic and bring forth some new surprises," <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/995477">Nerd Kingdom teased</a>.<br />

Players can now get their hands on recipes to help them whip up useful items, mine crystals in the world, and transmute items at a cost. Farewell, Stone Age; <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> is advancing to the Bronze. With update 0.6.5's introduction of new ores and the metallurgy equipment to smelt and shape them, players can forge more powerful bronze weapons and tools to help them better survive in their adventures.<br />
<br />
Of course, before you can use the ore you first have to find and mine it; ores will generate from certain rock materials and players find them by deleting rocks with their building too. And thanks to the addition of a larger 2x2x2 building cube, mining (and building) is made easier. To switch between the cube sizes, scroll the mouse wheel while holding Shift. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> is about to get a lot more metal.  It's about to be so metal that you won't be able to handle all of the metal.  At least, you'll need to be skilled with forging to handle all of the metal, as the game's initial implementation for metallurgy is coming to a test client near your desktop.  The game has <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/979217">posted an update for backers</a> explaining that the first pass is nearly complete, and the next game update will allow players to build a forge, make simple bronze age tools, and mine for important minerals.<br />
<br />
But what's it all worth if you can't show off to your friends?  Multiplayer support is currently high on the priority list, with no specific ETA provided beyond a promise of another update in the near future. Yesterday, Massively reported on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/07/17/yogscasts-tug-partnership-comes-alongside-a-cancelled-game/">impending bankruptcy filing and cancellation</a> of Kickstarted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Winterkewl/">Winterkewl</a>/<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Yogscast/">Yogscast</a> game <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Yogventures/">Yogventures!</a></em> and the alleged transfer of its assets over to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em>, a sandbox game by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> that we've written about since its reveal last year. Journalists and gamers have suggested that in spite its claims to the contrary, <a href="http://gamasutra.com/blogs/ZacharyStrebeck/20140717/221315/YogsCast_Kickstarter_game_Yogventures_cancelled__A_legal_perspective.php">Yogscast itself might be liable for refunds</a>, as would any beneficiary of assets entangled in a future bankruptcy filing. We spoke to <em>TUG's </em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Peter-Salinas/">Peter "Ino" Salinas</a> to shed light on the situation and its implications for <em>TUG</em>.<br />

<strong>Massively: Yogscast has distanced itself from Winterkewl, the studio making <em>Yogventures!</em>, but statements made by Winterkewl seem to suggest that Yogscast is simply transferring its support for Winterkewl's game to your pre-existing game, <em>TUG</em>, causing Yogventures to go bankrupt and disavowing any obligation to underwrite the spent half million in Kickstarter funds. Is that your understanding of the situation? Can you clarify it for our readers?</strong><br />

<strong>Nerd Kingdom's Peter Salinas:</strong> There are a lot of details to the discussions that Yogs and Winterkewl had before we started to develop our friendship with the Yogscast. We were also honestly wary of the situation ourselves at first, having been aware of <em>Yogventures!</em> around the time we did our own Kickstarter campaign. The reality of the situation was this: A young and ambitious developer overscoped a project... this would not be the first time that happened; it's just a total bummer that it had to happen with a massive community involved. And during that time, the Yogscast group, knowing little enough about development, agreed to let them use their likeness in their own project. Yogs knew that Yogscast itself was not equipped to manage the project, so they let Winterkewl use their brand and a community to build on. Sadly in that process, all the milestones that were set by Winterkewl, which would have allowed the Yogscast to promote the project, never were hit. How can you promote or make an experience with nothing to share? If you're a fan of Yogscast and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em>, you're probably happy to learn that Yogscast is going to be working closely with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> to promote the game.  Of course, you might not be such a fan if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2014/07/17/yogscasts-kickstarter-funded-yogventures-canceled">you were originally a backer of <em>Yogventures!</em></a>, the Yogscast-inspired game that very recently announced it was cancelled despite reaching double its Kickstarter goal in 2012.  All of the <em>Yogventures!</em> assets and code are being transferred over as well, allowing <em>TUG</em> to reap the benefits of what had been done on the cancelled game.<br />
<br />
According to the Yogscast crew, the partnership with <em>TUG</em> and the distribution of serial codes are meant as an effort to make things right, although the official communication makes it clear that they are not on the hook for the game's cancellation (which <a href="http://gamasutra.com/blogs/ZacharyStrebeck/20140717/221315/YogsCast_Kickstarter_game_Yogventures_cancelled__A_legal_perspective.php">might be legally debatable</a>).  Many of the <em>Yogventures!</em> backers are still very unhappy with the situation, though, as <em>TUG</em> is not the game they backed in the first place. What purpose do really dumb goats serve? If they're in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tug/"><em>TUG's</em></a> new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoJ5Uuyi9QM">0.6.3 alpha update</a>, it's to be hunted for their pelts and cooked over a roaring flame.<br />
<br />
In a new video, <em>TUG </em>shows off several of the sandbox elements that went into today's patch. Players can create and cultivate farms, or alternatively go hunting for the aforementioned "dumb goats." There is also a physics system in place for projectiles, new craftables, and the ability to have a good old-fashioned cook-out.<br />

The latest update on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> is both <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/904587">good news and bad news</a>. The good news is that the game is getting ready to roll out a major update that will include a lot of fun stuff for players. Like what, you ask? Like hunting, and farming and all the goats you can ask for. Even if you ask for a <em>lot</em> of goats, you can have never have enough goats.<br />
<br />
So what's the bad news? Well, it turns out that the team kind of broke Proving Grounds on the way to adding in new features. Rather than delaying the update, the current stopgap solution is to block off Proving Grounds and simply add it back in during a later update. If you've been looking forward to testing out <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-untitled-game/">TUG's</a></em> persistent survival mode, it's now here; alpha update 0.6.2 introduced the first phase this week. The update also includes new biomes to explore, new resources to gather, an extended hunger timer, and more. The Proving Grounds, the game's traditional arena mode, is still available to play. In my youth, my father handed me nails, wood, and a hammer and told me to build whatever I wanted. I managed to create swollen fingers and a few tangled heaps of wood and nails. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nerd-kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> is a lot like my father, but instead of wood, the studio is handing me <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-untitled-game/">TUG</a></em>, or as I like to call it, everything.<br />
<br />
<em>TUG</em> is a sandbox RPG akin to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/landmark/">Landmark</a></em> or <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Minecraft/">Minecraft</a></em>, but something about <em>TUG</em> is different. Maybe it's the development team that contains working titles like Economist or Behavioral Scientist. Or perhaps it's the data-driven design philosophy, which claims to deliver a better experience by analyzing how we play. Regardless, it's clear that Nerd Kingdom is attempting to give us more tools to create, both for the players in game and the modders outside of it.<br />

The low introductory cost is due to the "unfinished nature of the game" and will be raised as time goes by. <em>TUG </em>currently features two modes, creative and survival, for players to enjoy.<br />

Developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/peter-salinas">Peter Salinas</a> said that the title has made great strides through its alpha testing: "We've had such tremendous feedback and support from our players in our early alpha, and we can't wait to see all the amazing and creative things players will continue to do with the game. By looking at our community's play patterns and listening to their feedback, we can keep our development focused on what our players want."<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tag"><em>TUG</em></a> lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-bearden">John Bearden</a> has published the first in a series of dev blogs focused on the crowdfunded sandbox title. This first go-round focuses on crafting, which Bearden says is "vital to your survival."<br />
<br />
He goes on to detail the dev team's thinking in terms of designing the full system, and even shares some early mockups. Bearden also explains why <em>TUG's</em> crafting UI is minimalistic compared to some of its MMO predecessors. "We never wanted to have a full UI system for the crafting process. From the beginning, we have always wanted to keep it very natural and intuitive for the player," he explains. "Early crafting should capture the feel of a scavenger or early explorer gathering items and sorting them in a natural workspace for assembly."<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/"><em>TUG</em></a> might not have a real name (or does it?) but it's definitely going places in the world: <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/games/765/announcements/detail/1261308829185903437">The title was one of 50 games that got greenlit on Steam today</a>.<br />
<br />
Fans voted that <em>TUG </em>should be offered on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam's</a> digital distribution platform and apparently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve">Valve</a> agreed. Of course, <em>TUG </em>had some help getting there: The creators had offered supporters <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/updates/220041725/1390974763">several types of virtual goodies</a> if they helped <em>TUG </em>pass the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/greenlight/">greenlight</a> threshold.<br />
<br />
<em>TUG </em>is still in early alpha with an eye to release sometime next year. Development on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> is continuing, but it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/27/tug-project-update-details-alpha-and-beta-plans/">shifting gears a little bit</a>. What was originally going to be called the game's first beta phase is now still an alpha phase, even though most of the core systems are in place. But the game's still moving along, and as it enters its next major testing phase, it's looking for fans to help spread the word. The game also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/30/tug-s-steam-greenlight-campaign-is-now-active/">went into voting for Steam Greenlight</a>, so there's another option to help support its development.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tug/">TUG: The Untitled Game</a></em> has just made its debut in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/steam/">Steam</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/greenlight/">Greenlight</a> program. Fans and backers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/nerd-kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom's</a> upcoming MMO can now choose the game's Steam fate by voting on whether or not <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/valve/">Valve</a> should allow <em>TUG </em>to be offered through the Steam digital distribution platform.<br />
<br />
For those out of the <em>TUG </em>loop, Nerd Kingdom describes the game as being influenced by "classic survival sandbox games with more robust multiplayer RPG gameplay, offering simplicity of design and an emphasis on player freedom." <div>Developer of the Kickstarter-funded sandbox MMO <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/the-untitled-game">The Untitled Game</a></em>, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/nerd-kingdom">Nerd Kingdom</a>, has announced a new update regarding the status of the game's alpha and beta, and it's a bit of good news and a bit of not-so-good news. The not-so-good news is that the developers have "decided to push back calling the game's current state a 'beta' and keep it in the alpha phase." The good news, though, is that many of the systems the devs were hoping to implement are ready to go live, and "[the devs have] had a chance to refine many things for this next major milestone."<br />
<br />
In the update e-mail, the devs tell fans that they are entering a "new phase of development" that will require the community's help to spread the word about the game and expand the game's fanbase. In addition, the devs are making a push to open more lines of public communication with the community, such as public updates on the game's tech development, more dev blogs and vlogs, and "a stronger presence with a bunch of [<em>TUG</em>'s] YouTube content creator friends." On top of that, the devs announce they are planning to drop the price of alpha access while also working with the internet-favorite Humble Store to "allow for a much smoother purchasing process for everyone who is supporting [the game]." Last, but not least, <em>TUG</em>'s devs are "preparing to launch a Steam Greenlight campaign on January 29th," so fans will have the opportunity to help bring <em>TUG</em> to everyone's favorite online game-delivery platform. "This year is certainly going to be our year," the e-mail closes, "and we could not be more excited or grateful to have you guys here to help push us."<br />

"Relentless" attacks against fledgling sandbox <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/"><em>TUG</em></a> are being addressed by the team and its security measures, <a href="http://forum.nerdkingdom.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&amp;t=362&amp;start=10">Nerd Kingdom wrote in a forum post yesterday</a>.<br />
<br />
Players noticed something wrong when they couldn't log into the game yesterday, and a developer confirmed that a DDOS attack was in the works and was being combated. She said that there is no ETA for a fix but that players who have applied for testing keys need not worry about losing theirs due to the issue.<br />

"Yeah, the attacks started during the weekend and they've been pretty relentless. Luckily our security measures are working. We just need to do some tweaking now," <a href="http://forum.nerdkingdom.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&amp;t=362&amp;start=10">developer Dee posted</a>. "While it sucks that it's happening, it's better to have these things happen now, while we're in the alpha stage when stuff's supposed to break, than later when it might've been much more of a problem to iron out."<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> is a game with big goals and a small start, but that's just more stuff for it to work up to over time. <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/657170">The latest update for the game's backers</a> shows how far the game has already come even in its early stage, though, with the game already beginning to build upon and improve its overall infrastructure. The latest update highlights that third-person models are now partly in place, with first-person animations and some third-person animations working correctly.<br />
<br />
The game's networking is also in place, but at the moment it's only a bare-bones implementation; players can host servers but no central server architecture yet exists. The update warns that it's also largely untested, since that is part of what the testing environment exists to facilitate. It doesn't matter; the fun is in watching them fall! The video gives a visual lesson on the physics of the world, with items rotating naturally in the air then bouncing and rolling around once they hit the ground or each other. Add to that some horizontal velocity as things are hurled through the air and the whole things feels very organic.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/"><em>TUG's</em></a> hardcore survival mode will get its first iteration of testing <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/633636">with the so-called "Survival Games" </a>coming to the beta in January 2014. The team is preparing limited, focused matches on special servers to experiment, refine, and polish its PvP systems.<br />
<br />
The Survival Games servers are a prelude to <em>TUG's</em> survival mode in which players are thrown onto a map and challenged to be the last man or woman standing. In addition to straight-up combat, these maps contain enemy NPCs and crafting resources. The shrewd survivalist might be able to fashion a weapon or trap on the fly to help gain an edge.<br />
<br />
As players engage in the Survival Games, the <em>TUG </em>team will be changing the rules constantly and allowing players to implement their own mods in order to develop the best final product.<br />

It's been a little while since we've heard from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/make-my-mmo">crowdfunded</a> sandbox that moved from Kickstarter campaign to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/07/12/tug-to-release-first-alpha-on-monday/">alpha testing</a> in record time. But that doesn't mean that work hasn't been moving forward on <em>The Untitled Game</em>; in fact, there has been plenty of progress on the tech side of things. Devs <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1/posts/626420">released an update</a> outlining the current systems being worked on -- namely, networking and multiplayer, a scripting sub-system, character and AI systems, and terrain modification tools.<br />
<br />
If everything goes smoothly, <em>TUG</em> alpha testers can look forward to playing together in creative mode in two patch cycles. Additionally, devs are "working on a host of fancy terrain modification tools, which will include things like chiseling, sculpting, odd shape blocks, etc." that will help <em>TUG</em> to lose that cube-only feeling. While I'm still reasonably wary of Kickstarter and the pie-in-the-sky promises that have come out of these fundraisers, I can't deny that there have been potentially exciting ideas out there, especially in the field of MMO music.<br />
<br />
For starters, we might one day see <a href="http://www.theanthymn.com/"><em>Anthymn</em></a>, a fantasy MMO completely based around music. It's a notion so breathtakingly cool that I fear it might never see the light of day while thousands of been-there-killed-that titles trudge into existence. But <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/28/making-music-together-an-interview-with-anthymn/">talking with the creators of that game</a> really drove home the fact that music is such an integral part of our lives and can hold a similar place of honor in our virtual worlds.<br />
<br />
And then there's <a href="http://nerdkingdom.com"><em>TUG</em></a>, another quirky Kickstarter prodigy, which demonstrated how music and sounds can be used as social glue to pull people together. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sDS-MrLVFg&amp;feature=player_embedded">It showed us this with a wordless video</a> that got its point across perfectly. The last two weeks haven't been quiet on the crowdfunding front. There comes a time in every <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/make-my-mmo">crowdfunding</a> backer's life where s/he questions when (and if) entrance to that magical new world will actually happen. For <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/TUG/">TUG</a></em> supporters, the answer is next Monday! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> has announced that <em>The Untitled Game</em> will launch alpha testing in the early evening hours of July 15th. At that point, all alpha backers will be able to log in and see firsthand what their funds are building.<br />
<br />
The studio invites those qualified to jump in and help find potential bugs for the development team to squash. However, it also emphasizes that this is <em>early</em> alpha, and as such there will not be any real gameplay such as combat or tree climbing (or any other terrain interactions) -- yet. Constant and regular updates are expected throughout the alpha testing stage, implementing new mechanics, functions, and systems. Go ahead -- make my MMO. And here you thought this phrase only worked when interrupting a robbery! What was a unique phenomenon in the not-too-distant past has become an increasingly popular trend: crowdfunding new MMOs. Whether they're using the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> funding platform or another, more and more developers are turning to the public instead of publishers to take their designs from the drawing board and into reality. In fact, sometimes it feels like there are just too many to keep up with! Besides the new campaigns that seem to be popping up like dandelions, there are the successfully funded games to keep an eye on.<br />

Over a heaping smorgasboard of food yesterday, I was given a healthy dose of the logical functions of the universe. The universe of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tug"><em>TUG</em></a>, that is, and the professor of the hour was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Peter-Salinas/">Peter Salinas</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nerd-Kingdom/">Nerd Kingdom</a> founder and expert in just about everything science. At this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a>, Massively got to test a functional tech demo that showed some progress over earlier video capture and artwork, and Salinas told me about <em>TUG</em>'s mechanics and how the systems of the game work together to create a unique experience.<br />

"A lot of the tacky-looking games on the internet are impressive by design, but they just don't have a lot of visuals to support what that design is," he explained cryptically. "Every once in a while, a game comes out and its systems are amazing, so a publisher will snatch it up, put [those systems] into a game, and then realize they don't want to use it. [So the developer] gets shelved. That's why we want to stay independent."
