Sometimes it's a little tricky to write about an MMO right before content releases. There's usually a definite slump in developer interactivity as the team prepares for what will inevitably be a very busy time. <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> is no exception to this rule, and this is one of those weeks.<br />
<br />
We're still about two weeks away from celebrating <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online-s/">Star Trek Online's</a></em> third anniversary. To date, we have only a few ideas about what the anniversary celebration might entail, but not much else has been revealed by the team at Cryptic.<br />
<br />
However, that doesn't mean nothing has happened. Quite the contrary! There are a few things to talk about this week, including some fun news that actress <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Denise-Crosby/">Denise Crosby</a> has been tapped to participate in the game. So join me past the break as I touch on some of the fun stuff in <em>STO</em> that we're hearing about!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/21/captains-log-star-trek-online-enlists-denise-crosby-for-secret/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Star Trek Online enlists Denise Crosby for secret project</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/21/captains-log-star-trek-online-enlists-denise-crosby-for-secret/">Captain's Log: Star Trek Online enlists Denise Crosby for secret project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> Season Six is in full swing! My fleet is extremely close to reaching tier one of its new fleet starbase (in all three categories), and people seem to be having a pretty good time as they team up to take on fleet missions to earn the merits the starbase is starving for. I have to admit, our Ventrilo channel hasn't been this busy in a long time. Rarely do I log in to see fewer than 20 names active in the channel.<br />
<br />
This week we were told that a new version of the infamous lock box is being released. Part of the announcement also addressed the fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic-Studios/">Cryptic Studios</a> has decided to make some tweaks to the Lobi store. The Foundry has been kept offline since the Season Six launch and remains shut down. Capping off the week, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> began a weekend-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the first airing of Star Trek: The Next Generation! Join me after the jump to learn a little bit more about it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/23/captains-log-star-trek-online-celebrates-25-years-of-the-next/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Star Trek Online celebrates 25 years of The Next Generation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/23/captains-log-star-trek-online-celebrates-25-years-of-the-next/">Captain's Log: Star Trek Online celebrates 25 years of The Next Generation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 20:00:00 EST. The first season of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-next-generation">Star Trek: The Next Generation</a> launched 25 years ago. In honor of the anniversary of the blessed event, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> players have the opportunity to unlock some nostalgic swag for free. From now until "around" 1:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the 24th, players can take a mini-mission that will send them off to speak with good ol' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/worf">Worf</a>. Completing that mission will unlock the free swag: Federation characters will receive a TNG Season 1 uniform, male Klingon and Federation characters with hair options will receive Worf's Season 1 short hair and goatee (sorry, no bearded ladies), and Klingon and Federation characters of both species will get access to Worf's Season 1 sash.<br />
	<br />
	This is a per-character unlock, so be sure to talk to Worf with every character that you'd like to <em>boldly go</em> with a little more panache.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/19/star-trek-online-celebrates-the-25th-anniversary-of-the-next-gen/">Star Trek Online celebrates the 25th anniversary of The Next Generation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Jul 2012 15:30:00 EST. Brain Trust, assemble! I've called you all here today to put on your prognosticating caps and cast your vision into the future -- the future of 10 years from now, that is. Consider this: It is the year 2020, and I am 44 years old, practically ready for the video games old folks home. Also consider: MMOs are still around, and we're all still playing them fervently. So we need you, the Massively Brain Trust, to tell us what these MMOs will be like.<br />
<br />
Will they be mind-controlled, like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_%28Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation%29">that goofy 1991 episode</a> of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which everyone's addicted to a lame addictive frisbee game? Will these MMOs be huge, revolutionary leaps forward, or will they merely be a series of small, progressive steps to better graphics, better immersion, and larger exclamation points above NPCs' heads? Will we be playing the MMOs of today in 2020, much like how gamers still enjoy <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> and <a href="http://www.uoherald.com/news/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>?<br />
<br />
What do you think MMOs will be like 10 years from now? We'll record the responses for posterity, and then in 2020 we'll pull them out to see who was right and who was completely ridiculous.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/28/the-daily-grind-what-will-mmos-be-like-10-years-from-now/">The Daily Grind: What will MMOs be like 10 years from now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 08:00:00 EST. Today we've got a double treat for <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> fans, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> has released both a new trailer (with a quick but awesome shot of Deep Space Nine!) and a developer diary that discusses some very cool stuff about the newly evolved Borg featured in the game. Yes, we said "new" Borg -- as in species and assimilation methods never before seen in the Trek universe.<br />
<br />

A new fragrance is out, and it smells exactly like the old one. It's the gentle waft of something I'm quite familiar with: <em>Star Trek</em> fandom. Let me preface this by saying I've been a fan of <em>Star Trek</em> ever since I saw an episode of <em>The Next Generation</em> back when my parents used to tape it every week so we could watch it as a family. So when I declare that people griping about <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> emphasis on combat aren't true<em> Trek</em> fans, I know the amount of weight that statement carries.<br />
<br />
And you know what? They really aren't true fans.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/the-digital-continuum-federation-stands-for-fighting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Digital Continuum: Federation stands for 'fighting'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/the-digital-continuum-federation-stands-for-fighting/">The Digital Continuum: Federation stands for 'fighting'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. There is much buzz in the MMOG universe this morning about the upcoming title <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Being absolute fanboys and fangirls of Star Trek ourselves (much like <a href="http://sto-zone.com/blog/">our friends at <em>STO</em> Zone</a> who had the same idea) we wanted to show you a couple of nuggets of interesting art that we've extracted. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/os183_sto_fullsize.jpg">These two images</a> were <a href="http://media3.startrekonline.com/img/bg_mission.jpg">taken</a> from the <a href="http://media3.startrekonline.com/img/bg_bridge.jpg">backgrounds</a> of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a> <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> site that was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/cryptic-officially-announces-star-trek-online/">unveiled last night</a>. <br /><br />The top image shows an <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Andorian">Andorian</a> female in the foreground of what appears to be an away team. Some of the staff think that may be either a <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Bolian">Bolian</a>, <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Benzite">Benzite</a> or an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(Star_Trek)">Orion male</a> to her left, but it's very hard to make out. (Not that many people <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Image:Orion_slavegirl_ENT.jpg">remember the Orion <em>males</em> anyway</a>.) Below that is a Klingon at the helm of what appears to be a Bird of Prey with a Human, Ferengi, Cardassian and Vulcan manning the controls, dressed in Federation uniform, or wearing Federation insignia. <a href="http://www.michaelcmcgreevy.com/1/2008/07/Rampant-Speculation.cfm">Speculation from some blog sites</a> suggest that Cryptic is likely looking at a period of time post-DS9, tied to the Officer Exchange Program that started in the episode "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Matter_of_Honor">A Matter of Honor</a>" during the TNG series. It seems like an excellent spot in the continuity to place an MMO, we think. <br /></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/the-hidden-art-of-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The hidden art of Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/the-hidden-art-of-star-trek-online/">The hidden art of Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 15:00:00 EST. The first news-worthy bit to pop up post-scare is a <a href="http://www.startrek-online.net/messageboard/showthread.php?t=11533">post by Steve Mason</a> (the lead UI designer) at the <a href="http://www.startrek-online.net">startrek-online.net</a> forums.<br /><br />Mason is dedicated to preserving the <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/LCARS">LCARS</a> look in <em>Star Trek Online</em>. For those who aren't total <em>Star Trek</em> nerds; LCARS is the graphical user interface used by Federation ships in the 24th Century-era <em>Star Trek</em> series (<a href="http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TNG/"><em>The Next Generation</em>,</a> <a href="http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/DS9/"><em>Deep Space Nine</em>,</a> and <a href="http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/VOY/"><em>Voyager</em></a>). It was designed by a TNG-staff artist who was trying to theorize what a high-tech GUI interface would be like when GUIs were still in their infancy in the real world.<br /><br />So, there are some challenges in making LCARS useful to modern users. Mason says that <em>STO</em> will use an updated version of the LCARS interface (which won't hurt canon, since the game takes place quite a few years after <em>Voyager</em> left off) that will include all the bells and whistles of modern, cutting-edge UIs. " Think iPhone," he said. There are more details in his <a href="http://www.startrek-online.net/messageboard/showthread.php?t=11533">post,</a> and he also opened up the thread to questions.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.warcry.com/news/view/79502-Star-Trek-Online-Designer-Steve-Mason-Comments-on-User-Interface">WarCry</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/04/sto-ui-is-modernized-lcars-think-iphone/">STO UI is modernized LCARS; "think iPhone"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Dec 2007 21:00:00 EST.
