Could the <a href="http://www.epicgames.com/"><em>Gears of War</em></a> folks be the knight in shining armor that doomed <a href="http://na.apb.com/"><em>APB</em></a> desperately needs? <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11333582">According to BBC</a>, <a href="http://www.epicgames.com/">Epic Games</a> is possibly interested in scooping up Realtime Worlds' MMO, although nothing is confirmed at this point. Realtime Worlds abruptly announced yesterday that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/16/realtime-worlds-announces-the-closure-of-apb/"><em>APB</em> was to be shut down today</a>, sending shockwaves through the community.<br />
<br />
While Epic Games is not commenting on any possible negotiations, a spokesperson confirmed that Epic's CEO, Mark Rein, is a fan of the game. <em>"Mark absolutely loves </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin/">APB</a><em>, and everyone here loved what they saw. We've got our hands full of </em>Gears of War 3, Bullet Storm<em> and the recently announced </em>Project Sword<em>. If any talks like that are going on, then they would be confidential,"</em> Dana Cowley, Epic's spokesperson, said. Rein was outspoken about his enjoyment of the game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-massivelys-first-look-at-gameplay-in-all-points-bulle/">at PAX last year</a>.<br />
<br />
Epic Games may also have a vested interest in the technology powering <em>APB</em>. We'll be keeping our ears to the ground on this one if anything further develops.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/17/rumor-epic-games-in-talks-to-buy-apb/">Rumor: Epic Games in talks to buy APB</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 10:30:00 EST. Back at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX09</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-turbine-tells-us-all-about-siege-of-mirkwood/">we brought you information</a> on <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online's</a></em> latest expansion, <em>Siege of Mirkwood</em>. Unfortunately, at that time we weren't able to show any images of the breathtaking views <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine/">Turbine</a> treated us to -- at least not until now.<br /><br />Say hello to Dol Guldur, the fortress that served as Sauron's home back in his necromancer days in <em>The Hobbit</em>. It's pretty evil looking, yeah? it's also a massive vertical dungeon that -- and we can say from first-hand experience -- will astonish any fan of Gothic architecture . There are plenty more screens in the gallery, so take a look and share your thoughts.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-lord-of-the-rings-online-siege-of-mirkwood-expansion/">The Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood expansion</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-lord-of-the-rings-online-siege-of-mirkwood-expansion/#2348052"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/lotro_dol-guldur_tower_exterior2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-lord-of-the-rings-online-siege-of-mirkwood-expansion/#2348051"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/lotro_dol-guldur_tower_exterior5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-lord-of-the-rings-online-siege-of-mirkwood-expansion/#2348050"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/lotro_dol-guldur_tower_exterior4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-lord-of-the-rings-online-siege-of-mirkwood-expansion/#2348049"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/lotro_dol-guldur_tower_exterior7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-lord-of-the-rings-online-siege-of-mirkwood-expansion/#2348048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/lotro_dol-guldur_tower_exterior6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/gaze-onto-dol-guldur-in-siege-of-mirkwood/">Gaze onto Dol Guldur in Siege of Mirkwood</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 12:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">While we've brought you all manner of tasty insights and asides into what happened at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-2009/">PAX 2009</a> this year, there's something to be said for being able to catch the panels yourself. Knowing full well that their fans were going to go completely <em>berserk</em> when they heard all the juicy details about <em><a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">Guild Wars 2</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ArenaNet/">ArenaNet</a> has gone to great lengths to make sure to record all of their panels at PAX 2009 for you to check out. How awesome is that? <br /><br />The topics for this year were two completely different question and answer panels on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/new-guild-wars-2-concept-art-released-through-facebook/">Art of </a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> 2, an insightful talk with the <a href="http://www.guildwars.com"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> Live team who currently take care of the game, and a really interesting panel on the <em>Fall of Ascalon</em> novel that will give us the backstory between <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars/">Guild Wars</a></em> and <em>Guild Wars 2</em>. So if you weren't able to make it, be sure to check out the other half of the above lore video behind the jump, then head over to ArenaNet's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/arenanetofficial">official video channel</a> to enjoy the rest! </div>

It seems that <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/60450">for the week of</a> 9/6 to 9/12, MMOs topped both the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/">Steam</a> and <a href="http://direct2drive.com">Direct2Drive</a> sales charts. <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/en/collectors-edition/"><em>Aion:</em> Collector's Edition</a> was first and <a href="http://champions-online.com">Champions Online </a>second on Steam and and it was the same for D2D, except they swapped first and second positions. <a href="http://fallenearth.com"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a> (preorder) was third on D2D, while not for sale on Steam. The <em>Aion:</em> Standard Edition took tenth on Steam and fifth on D2D.<br /><br />It's also worth mentioning that <a href="http://www.bioware.com/games/knights_old_republic/"><em>Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic</em></a>, while not an MMO, ranked highly for the week as well (third on Steam and fourth on D2D). BioWare announced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-bioware-offers-star-wars-the-old-republic-fans-discou/">a special $10 deal</a> for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/kotor"><em>KotOR</em></a> at PAX last week for fans of their upcoming MMO, <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. People buying <em>KotOR</em> through D2D will receive a 25% discount on <a href="http://massively.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>SWTOR</em></a> when it releases. Speaking of D2D, you should keep your eye on their special <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/d2dturns5">Five Year Anniversary</a> page because next Monday ten <u>RPG/MMOs</u> will be going on sale for $5.00 each!<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Thanks for the fix, cb!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/mmos-top-steam-and-direct2drive-weekly-charts/">MMOs top Steam and Direct2Drive weekly charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 19:00:00 EST. We <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-massivelys-first-look-at-gameplay-in-all-points-bulle/">learned a bit more about the game at PAX 2009</a> but we're always hoping to find out more. Fortunately, the company released a new video podcast today filmed at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2009">GamesCom 2009</a> in Cologne that many of our readers have been waiting for -- one with actual gameplay.<br /><br />The series of videos released prior to this focused on the extensive customization options <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/all-points-bulletin"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> will offer. Although we see quite a bit of <a href="http://mrtoledano.com/frame_videogamers.php">gameface</a> from the audience in this latest video podcast, we also see a bit more of that attention to detail emphasized in the previous video footage playing out in the mean streets of the waterfront district. Among other things, the footage shows some very detailed gun animations w. shell ejects and, unsurprisingly, a lot of polish on the look of the vehicles. So maybe you missed out on seeing the glorious video reveal of Coruscant at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> this year. No worries, because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare">BioWare's</a> been kind enough to release <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20090911_002">a high quality copy</a> of the video into the wilds of the internet. We've posted it after the break in case you'd like to simple jump right into it.<br /><br />There's more news beyond the video being available on the game's official website, though, such as a bevy of very cool concept art that should entice any <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a> fan for several minutes bare minimum -- some of us may spend longer amounts of time staring.<br /><br />None of this is a big reveal, but that's perfectly understandable given the team's presence at PAX last weekend. So what about next weekend? Well, next weekend they'd better deliver or else we'll have to uh- well we'll just be sad if they don't, but it'll be a really vicious sadness that sends chills down spines!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/13/swtors-coruscant-artwork-and-pax-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SWTOR's Coruscant artwork and PAX video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/13/swtors-coruscant-artwork-and-pax-video/">SWTOR's Coruscant artwork and PAX video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 13 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. So, you may have heard: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom/">Funcom</a> is taking famous myths, urban legends, pop culture, history and even things like the Rota Fortunae and blending it all into a game called <em><a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/">The Secret World</a></em>. We sat down with lead designer Martin Brusgaar and creative director Ragnar Tornquist at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-2009/">PAX 2009</a> to discuss the game and a few of its many secrets.<br /><br /><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Secret-World/">The Secret World</a></em> has a vibe unlike any other MMO or really game currently out there. Its premise is simple -- all the legends, myths and more are true. Atlantis is rising, vampires roam the night, 2012 is the beginning of a new fourth age and so on. The world is a dark, scary and magical place. Although, it's more of the first two than anything else.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/">The Secret World</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838618"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838625"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838627"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838630"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/the-secret-world-2/#4838631"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/tswscreen38_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/pax-2009-dark-mysteries-of-the-secret-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX 2009: Dark mysteries of The Secret World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/pax-2009-dark-mysteries-of-the-secret-world/">PAX 2009: Dark mysteries of The Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 12:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.aoc.com">Age of Conan</a></em> came to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> pretty much <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/funcom-announces-rise-of-the-godslayer-expansion-for-age-of-cona/">directly off their announcement</a> of the <em>Rise of the Godslayer</em> expansion. So when we arrived at our appointment to check the game out and speak with Executive Producer Craig Morrison, you can imagine our curiosity levels were quite high.<br /><br />This expansion is taking players far into the eastern lands of Khitai, which is essentially a retelling of our own ancient eastern worlds. Something we were told right away is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom/">Funcom</a> wanted to avoid Japanese influences, as they're fairly over-saturated in videogames. Instead, they're going for a heavy focus on Korean and Chinese culture for the lands of Khitai.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-rise-of-the-godslayer-1/">Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-rise-of-the-godslayer-1/#2660701"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/northern_grasslands_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-rise-of-the-godslayer-1/#2660700"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/northern_grasslands_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-rise-of-the-godslayer-1/#2660699"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/northern_grasslands_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-rise-of-the-godslayer-1/#2660698"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/northern_grasslands_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/age-of-conan-rise-of-the-godslayer-1/#2660697"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/01/northern_grasslands_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/pax-2009-we-travel-east-with-rise-of-the-godslayer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX 2009: We travel east with Rise of the Godslayer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/pax-2009-we-travel-east-with-rise-of-the-godslayer/">PAX 2009: We travel east with Rise of the Godslayer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. We stopped by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic">Cryptic's</a> booth at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX 2009</a> for a chance to speak with the Executive Producer for <em><a href="http://www.startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online</a></em> Craig Zinkievich, and obviously to get our hands on the game as well. Well, turns out our demands were acceptable, and we got to both play the game and prod at Craig with our incessant "questions" for your -- and of course our own -- pleasure.<br />
<br />
Cryptic's goal for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> is to make players feel like they're inside an episode of <em>Star Trek</em> when they play the game. That's why they call their story-focused missions episodes, and why every one of them deals with both ground and space combat. Our hands-on experience focused on this aspect of the game, and much combat was had by, well, us.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-hands-on-and-phasers-locked-with-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX 2009: Hands-on and phasers locked with Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-hands-on-and-phasers-locked-with-star-trek-online/">PAX 2009: Hands-on and phasers locked with Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">This last weekend at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX 2009</a> we had the opportunity to sit down with <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online's</a></em> executive producer Jeffrey Steefel. He gave us a sneak peek at some of the new zone and instanced content coming in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/siege-of-mirkwood/">Siege of Mirkwood</a></em>, as well as many of the new features. So if you're skeptical or just plain curious, we think you'll be most intrigued to see what knowledge we've uncovered after venturing deep into Mirkwood and all the way into Sauron's fortress of Dol Guldur.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-turbine-tells-us-all-about-siege-of-mirkwood/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX 2009: Turbine tells us all about Siege of Mirkwood </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/pax-2009-turbine-tells-us-all-about-siege-of-mirkwood/">PAX 2009: Turbine tells us all about Siege of Mirkwood </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 09:30:00 EST. Clearly we've got a number of Star Wars fans among our readers looking at how many people are following our <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> coverage, and for many gamers the original <a href="http://www.bioware.com/games/knights_old_republic/"><em>Knights of the Old Republic</em></a> (circa 2003) was a memorable experience. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> announced at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX 2009</a> that they're handing out $10 doses of nostalgia by offering <em>KOTOR</em> downloads for PC through both <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/3/8380/product/Buy-Star-Wars:-Knights-of-the-Old-Republic-Download">Direct2Drive</a> and <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/32370/">Steam</a>. <br /><br />Getting back to the MMO angle, there's another 25% off of that for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> community members who download the game from Direct2Drive. Sure, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/05/star-wars-kotor-on-steam-direct2drive-now-free-for-pax-panel/">PAX attendees get their <em>KOTOR</em> downloads for free</a> -- damn you, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/kyle-horner">Kyle Horner!</a> -- but seriously, it's only $10 to begin with. If you missed <em>Knights of the Old Republic</em> the first time around, this is as good a time as any to catch up. <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20090904_001">Check out the announcement</a> over on the official <em>SWTOR</em> site and <a href="http://www.swtor.com/user/register">create your account</a> before September 15th if you're <em>really</em> adamant about saving a few bucks.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-bioware-offers-star-wars-the-old-republic-fans-discou/">PAX 2009: BioWare offers Star Wars: The Old Republic fans discount on KOTOR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Sep 2009 18:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">All Points Bulletin</a></em> was representing at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> and while the game wasn't playable I did manage to see a very cool PAX-only gameplay video presentation. Epic Games' Mark Rein and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Realtime-Worlds">Realtime Worlds'</a> community officer Chris Collins - you know, that dashing gentlemen in all those cool video podcasts - played a bunch of the game and edited it into a nicely narrated sample of what playing the game is like.<br /> <br />What I ended up seeing was a game that by all accounts looks very ready for launch, so I wasn't surprised to be told beta was "a few weeks" away and not months. And while that date is still a little ways off, most other attendees who saw the video seemed to agree that launch day couldn't come soon enough.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-massivelys-first-look-at-gameplay-in-all-points-bulle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX 2009: Massively's first look at gameplay in All Points Bulletin</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/07/pax-2009-massivelys-first-look-at-gameplay-in-all-points-bulle/">PAX 2009: Massively's first look at gameplay in All Points Bulletin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. It's quite a departure from the fantasy genre in MMOs, with elements of horror, mysteries and conspiracies, hidden knowledge sought by secret societies... ok, we can say no more. But it's killing us that we can't talk about it quite yet. We've seen the gameplay but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> will unleash unspeakable occult forces upon us, like lawyers, if we spill what we know. Of course we'll have a feature story on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a> up on Massively soon -- but in the meantime, we want to ask what you think about the impending arrival of horror to the MMO scene. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> is clearly trying to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/the-secret-world-reveals-new-game-trailer-factions/ ">set the tone for the game with their latest trailer</a>, which might have given us clues about the kinds of things we'll see in <em>TSW</em>. But as we all know, a cinematic isn't always the best representation of a game title. So do you think <em>The Secret World</em> will be a dark, mature title? However, during our forthcoming interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeffrey-steefel">Jeffrey Steefel</a> he informed us that fall is in fact the release date and once further testing is finished a more exact date will be announced.<br /><br />As for the price, Turbine seems to be trying something new <a href="http://forums.lotro.com/showpost.php?p=3995771&amp;postcount=191">with a $19.99 base price</a> and some special promotional deals leading up to the release of the new expansion. Despite all the secrecy, we know it's a modern day setting with heavy overtones of the occult and mysticism. Past images released for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world">The Secret World</a></em> have shown shambling, twisted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/17/the-secret-world-screenshots-leaked-in-funcom-quarterly-report/">corpses walking through a town</a>. There was also a Cthulu-esque scene of a thing-that-cannot-be-named obliterating city streets, a lone woman wielding a katana facing off against it. They've told us that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/gdc09-interview-with-the-secret-worlds-creator-ragnar-tornqui/">players will form cabals</a> to uncover mysteries and deal with supernatural threats. Still, there hasn't been much to go on. <br /><br />What <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom</a> reveals about <em>The Secret World</em> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> in the coming days will be "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/new-the-secret-world-info-at-pax-to-be-biggest-thing-yet/"><em>the biggest thing on TSW yet</em></a>", but apparently secrets just want to be set free. We came across a YouTube video of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utW53uzpjUA"><em>The Secret World</em>'s second trailer</a> (embedded below), with a shotgun toting girl tracking some monstrosity that can scatter its form into a murder of crows. You can also see the trailer in high res that's part of an exclusive on the Norwegian site <a href="http://www.dagbladet.no/2009/09/03/kultur/spill/the_secret_world/funcom/onlinespill/7939385/">Dagbladet.no</a>. Plus, they've got eleven new screenshots and bits of concept art up on their site as well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/the-secret-world-reveals-new-game-trailer-factions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Secret World reveals new game trailer, factions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/the-secret-world-reveals-new-game-trailer-factions/">The Secret World reveals new game trailer, factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 13:45:00 EST. She might look familiar as her image is used to advertise the game and a statue of her will also be found in the <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/uk/preorder/">Collector's Edition</a> when <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is released later this month. <br /><br />"Aiva's Story" is the work of artist Neil Googe and writers David Noonan and Ricardo Sanchez. Aiva's life is torn apart when her family is killed by an Elyos raiding party. Embittered, she endures a harsh life as a mercenary, fighting Karnifs and the Mau. She brings with her a festering hatred for the white-winged Elyos, eventually ascending to Daevahood and is posted to the Abyss. The comic book will be available (albeit in limited quantities) at the <em>Aion</em> booth at this weekend's <a href="http://massively.com/penny-arcade-expo">Penny Arcade Expo</a> in Seattle but fans will also be able to get their hands on a copy by purchasing the game at GameStop in the US and Electronic Boutique stores in Canada..<br /><br />You can check out our gallery below to see the cover art in it's full glory, as well as some internal artwork.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/">Aion: Aiva's Story</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251133"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_cover_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251134"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_front_cover_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/aion-aivas-story/#2251135"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/09/aion_comic_spread_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <hr />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> will be representing <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/index.php">Warhammer Online</a> </em>at Penny Arcade Expo in under a week's time, and to help attendees plan ahead, they've now <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/pressreleases/20090828.php">given some details about their showing</a>. Members of the development team will be hanging out waiting to talk to fans, and one of the biggest topics they'll be keen to discuss is the game's one-year anniversary and accompanying <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wild-hunt">Wild Hunt event</a>. By the time PAX starts (the 4th of September) the event will be halfway through so players will have had time to experience it before chatting with the devs. They will also be showing off other recent content updates.<br /><br />Although not specifically related to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, it is worth noting that Mythic Entertainment Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-hickman">Jeff Hickman</a> will be taking part in a PAX panel session on Friday the 4th. Along with other members of the industry, Hickman<em> "will re-examine the basics of game design and explore what it means to design in today's videogame industry."</em> Catch the panel at the Unicorn Theatre from 10:30am to 11:30am. As usual, if you visit the <em>WAR</em> booth you won't come away empty handed. The swag is similar to what Mythic gave away at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/17/mythic-to-show-off-wars-land-of-the-dead-at-games-day-chicago/">Games Day Chicago</a>: the Empire Cherub shirt (limited in supply this time too), and in-game items Snorri's Spikes, Chompin' Teef, Shroud of Imrathepis and the Razored Skinning Knife.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/30/mythic-details-plans-for-war-at-pax-2009/">Mythic details plans for WAR at PAX 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 30 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Taking place between September 4th-6th in Seattle, PAX is fast becoming the new must-attend convention for all sections of the industry, from developers to publishers and gamers. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> has just announced their plans for this year's convention and this focuses on their three big IPs: <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> and <a href="http://cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>.<br /><br />NCsoft will once again have booths at the event, one per game. On the <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> front, they will be showing the latest build of the game, which includes <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5">patch 1.5</a> (aka <em><a href="http://massively.com/tag/the-shadow-of-the-balaur">The Shadow of the Balaur</a></em>). Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_xaen">Brian Knox</a> and Associate Producer <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_liv">Lani Blazier</a> will also be on hand at booth #642. At the <a href="http://massively.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> booth (#842), there will be Q and As with the Live Team, a talk on the upcoming novel <em>The Fall of Ascalon</em> and the chance to win a 128 page <em>Art of Guild Wars 2</em> artbook. Finally at the <a href="http://massively.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> booth (#542) you can take a peek at the new update ("Power Spectrum") and nab a special PAX Costume Power code. There will also be a player meet up on the Saturday night (September 5th) hosted by the Online Community Relations team, for more information on that click <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/city_of_heroes_does_pax.html">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/26/ncsoft-announces-its-pax-plans/">NCsoft announces its PAX plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 19:00:00 EST. It looks like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GamesCom/">GamesCom</a> won't be getting all the late summer glory this year, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX/">PAX</a> now has two large MMO events tied around its massive people-crushing finger. The first is of course the <em><a href="http://www.swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em> public demo in the main hall, but the second seems no less grand.<br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom">Funcom's</a> Erling Ellingsen <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/08/14/the-secret-world-pax-showing-to-be-biggest-thing-yet/">has told VG247</a> that the reveal for <em><a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/">The Secret World</a></em> at PAX will be<em> "the biggest thing on TSW yet."</em> which is certainly a statement that delivers a lot of excitement. However, beyond the confirmation of new details being revealed in Seattle, WA on September 4th through the 6th, Erling's lips were sealed.<br /><br />Rest assured that Massively will be speaking with Funcom, potentially with a high amount of fervor. So if you're looking for that new info come the first weekend of September, it should be awaiting your acumen right here.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/new-the-secret-world-info-at-pax-to-be-biggest-thing-yet/">New The Secret World info at PAX to be 'biggest thing yet'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. It has been such a long time since we've heard anything on ArenaNet's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><span style="font-style: italic;">Guild Wars 2</span></a>. In fact, the game has been so quiet over the years (yes, it has been over 2 years) that we often find ourselves <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/23/ah-yes-more-sprinkles-of-guild-wars-2-news/">reporting on every single tidbit we find</a>, and then some.<br /><br />Well, now we get official word from ArenaNet's president himself that solid news is coming. According to <a href="http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User_talk:Mike_O%27Brien">Mike O'Brien's wiki talk page</a>, we should expect some information on <span style="font-style: italic;">Guild Wars 2</span> in what he's calling "an exciting week ahead". With <a href="http://www.paxsite.com/">PAX</a> coming in two short weeks, could this be an announcement of <span style="font-style: italic;">GW2</span> being shown there? We're excited to find out ourselves, but in the mean time, check out the animated logo on the <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com">main <span style="font-style: italic;">Guild Wars 2</span> website</a>, and follow along after the jump for Mike O'Brien's exact quote.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/guild-wars-2-news-coming-this-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Guild Wars 2 news coming this week?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/guild-wars-2-news-coming-this-week/">Guild Wars 2 news coming this week?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s latest MMO that is due to launch in the US and Europe next month, has just gone gold, the company has announced. For those not in the know, this means the game has been completed and is now being manufactured for release. Yes, that's it, the game is done. This comes after <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> has topped <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/aion-collectors-edition-pre-orders-top-steam-weekly-sales/">Steam's weekly sales</a> chart and the Collector's Edition <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/08/aion-collectors-edition-close-to-selling-out-in-the-uk/">has almost sold out</a> in the UK. <br /><br />The announcement hits just a few days before <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/">GamesCom 2009</a> in Cologne, Germany where NCsoft will be demoing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5">version 1.5</a> of the game, which includes <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em> content patch that was released in Korea on August 5th. NCsoft will also be demoing this latest version of the game at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle and it will also be included with the North American and European versions of the game when <em>Aion</em> is released on September 22nd/25th. <em>The Shadow of the Balaur</em> promises new zones, instances, quests and some specially created Western looks within the expansive character customisation system.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/ncsoft-announces-aion-has-gone-gold-now-being-manufactured/">NCsoft announces Aion has gone gold, now being manufactured</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nexon">Nexon America</a> is coming to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax">Penny Arcade Expo</a> this year, and they've released two very cool new <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net/">Dungeon Fighter Online</a> and <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dragon-Nest/">Dragon Nest</a> gameplay videos. Now, we were already curiously interested in <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Dungeon-Fighter-Online/">Dungeon Fighter Online</a> before, but after seeing this video we're now officially excited to try the game out at PAX.<br /><br />Then you've got this <em>Dragon Nest</em> gameplay video, which really caught our attention when we watched it. This game has seemingly come from left field with combat that looks as though it were ripped straight out of a console action RPG. If you're into these games at all, it should be good times soon enough when they officially release in North America -- <span style="font-style: italic;">DFO</span> sometime soon and <span style="font-style: italic;">DN</span> next year.<br /><br />Click and ogle the videos after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/impressive-new-dragon-nest-and-dungeon-fighter-online-gameplay-v/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Impressive new Dragon Nest and Dungeon Fighter Online gameplay videos</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/impressive-new-dragon-nest-and-dungeon-fighter-online-gameplay-v/">Impressive new Dragon Nest and Dungeon Fighter Online gameplay videos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. Do you plan on participating in the <em><a href="http://www.aiononline.com/us">Aion</a></em> beta this weekend? If not, you may want to reconsider, because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/NCsoft/">NCsoft</a> is offering a pretty amazing contest for those of you who decide to play. Here's the rub: <span>North American players who log into the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Aion/">Aion</a></em> closed beta this weekend (July 2nd to July 6th) and obtain level 3 are entered to win a trip to Seattle for themselves and a friend. This trip culminates at the <em>Aion</em> launch party at the Seattle Space Needle, where they'll also get to attend the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX/">PAX</a> 2009 expo.<br /><br />Pretty cool, right? We're sure that many of you would kill to get a chance to play <em>Aion</em> at all, let alone be entered into this contest. So make sure you get to at least level 3 if you're playing this weekend. You may as well if you're already going to play at all, right? And if you really want that beta key now -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/get-your-keys-for-the-third-aion-beta-weekend-before-theyre-go/">but haven't had the luck to nab one</a> -- preorder customers are given access to every beta event. You can find the page for preordering yourself a copy <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/us/preorder/">right here</a>.</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/02/aion-launch-party-contest-details-revealed/">Aion launch party contest details revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 02 Jul 2009 09:00:00 EST. If you're an ardent follower of <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, or perhaps one of the folks still spending time in <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&amp;template=main"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a>, then it looks like you've got a choice of conventions to attend this Labor Day weekend! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Funcom/">Funcom</a> has announced that not only will they be returning to their regular East coast convention haunt, <a href="http://www.dragoncon.org">Dragon*Con</a>, as <a href="http://www.dc-mmo.org/">part of the MMO track</a> - they'll also be expanding their travel this year to hang out with <a href="http://www.pennyarcadeexpo.com/">the gamers at PAX</a> as well! <br /><br />While there's no specifics as yet as to what they'll be doing with their communities at each convention, we can tell you from personal experience that Funcom throws good parties and has some pretty interesting panels. So, if either one of these two conventions is on your travel agenda, be sure to <a href="http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=185030">pop by and say hello to the Funcom teams</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/funcom-goes-bi-coastal-this-year-at-conventions/">Funcom goes bi-coastal this year at conventions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST.
