<a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online's</em></a> monthly <a href="http://startrekonline.com/node/2113">Ask Cryptic</a> features are always something for fans to look forward to reading, but this month even more so as executive producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dan-stahl/">Dan Stahl</a> goes well beyond the normal handful of queries to accumulate <a href="http://startrekonline.com/node/2113">29 questions and answers</a> to some of the hottest topics among the community.<br />
<br />
Included in this Q&amp;A session is a sneak peek at the work-in-progress Tholian race (above left), the revelation that Season 4 will primarily focus on retooling repeatable end game content, fleet starbases, passive bridge officer abilities, Season 3 item sets, Memory Alpha improvements, sector space expansion and much, much more. Stahl even explains why he picks the questions he does to answer -- basically, he likes to get into topics that aren't repeatedly touched upon in interviews.<br />
<br />
Those hoping for a full-fledged <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>STO</em></a> expansion shouldn't start holding their breath, however:<em> "It is unclear if we will ever produce a paid expansion as the market is leaning away from expansions and more towards smaller microtransactions. However, if we ever did release a paid expansion, it would be a significant update and add some new functionality to the game that would be deemed worth the price of the release."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/02/cryptic-answers-the-29-most-pressing-sto-questions/">Cryptic answers the 29 most pressing STO questions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. Peace be with you, readers. Today, we convene once again for a new edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, in which we discuss, with mutual respect for all opinions, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>. Begging your pardon if you disagree, but I thought it appropriate that we explore one of the game's brand-new features: diplomacy.<br />
<br />
With the advent of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/05/captains-log-pros-and-cons-of-season-2/">Season 2: Ancient Enemies</a>, Treksters and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em></a> fans the world over may breathe a sigh of relief. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> finally introduced a dedicated system for being <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/make-love-not-war-stos-craig-zinkievich-shows-off-the-federati/">all peaceable and stuff</a>, like on the teevee. So how does this diplomacy business work, and is it any good? Read on to find out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/captains-log-impressions-of-diplomacy-in-star-trek-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Impressions of diplomacy in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/12/captains-log-impressions-of-diplomacy-in-star-trek-online/">Captain's Log: Impressions of diplomacy in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. There's a lot going on with <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> at the moment. Not only does the game have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/preview-made-available-for-star-trek-onlines-season-2/">a major update fast approaching</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/18/star-trek-online-adds-more-c-store-options-and-controversy/">the occasional microtransaction controversy popping up</a>, but it's also <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/craig-zinkievich-leaving-star-trek-onlines-bridge/">recently been given a new executive producer</a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a> has had the reins for a little under a month, but that's still enough time to have a notable influence on both the direction of the upcoming update and the overall direction of the game.<br />
<br />
We recently had a chance to sit down and talk with the new executive producer about his work on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, the game's strengths and weaknesses, and where development is headed for the future. There's a new direction in store for the game, or perhaps it'd be more apt to say a new focus. If you're interested in the game's past and future, or even just in the various rumors that started flying about the game going free-to-play, take a look past the break for the full interview.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/our-interview-with-star-trek-onlines-executive-producer-dan-sta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Our interview with Star Trek Online's executive producer Dan Stahl</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/our-interview-with-star-trek-onlines-executive-producer-dan-sta/">Our interview with Star Trek Online's executive producer Dan Stahl</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 11:30:00 EST. <br />
Attention, Starfleet! It's time again for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/captains-log/">Captain's Log</a>, your favorite Thursday <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> column. After last week's roundup of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/captains-log-a-look-into-the-future-of-star-trek-online/">incoming changes and improvements</a>, let's discuss the latest much-needed upgrade to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online/"><em>STO</em>:</a> the Memory Alpha overhaul!<br />
<br />
I am so excited about this change. Crafting in <em>STO</em> definitely got short shrift at launch. The system itself was not engaging, and progression was a confounding mess. While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic/">Cryptic Studios</a> haven't fundamentally altered the former, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1679">last week's update</a> to the Season 1.3 patch made <a href="http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2619390">such changes</a> to the latter -- it implemented a dedicated crafting window and actual progression -- that I almost don't care. After bidding a brief farewell to the previous system, allow me to explain the basics of crafting: materials, missions and Memory Alpha.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/captains-log-guide-to-memory-alpha-and-crafting/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: Guide to Memory Alpha and crafting in Star Trek Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/captains-log-guide-to-memory-alpha-and-crafting/">Captain's Log: Guide to Memory Alpha and crafting in Star Trek Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 May 2010 13:30:00 EST. Really, if you play <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, you can't possibly treat the wholesale revision of Memory Alpha with anything but glee. (That is, the planetside excuse for a crafting system, not <a href="http://memory-alpha.org">the franchise wiki</a>.) It's been one of the most universally panned portions of the game, and short of it automatically deleting your character any changes would be an improvement. The <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1680">new Season 1.1 Supplemental patch</a> adds in the large-scale revision of Memory Alpha along with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/star-trek-online-takes-a-look-in-the-undine-terradome/">the Undine Terradome special task force</a> as well as several UI improvements and bug fixes.<br />
<br />
The revised version of Memory Alpha is much closer to a classic crafting system: you level a research skill in one of several categories, starting with Basic and moving on to more specialized research once you've maximized your Basic skill. Basic ingredients are sold by vendors on-site, and there's no longer trading in what amounts to tokens for new items. Progress in the previous system has been preserved as best is possible, although there is a bit of fudging of numbers here and there. It'll take <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online</a></em> players a little time to adjust to a crafting system that isn't quite so... <em>special</em> as its predecessor, <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/1680">but we're willing to bet they'll adapt</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/season-1-1-supplemental-goes-live-for-star-trek-online-and-nukes/">Season 1.1 supplemental goes live for Star Trek Online and nukes Memory Alpha</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 May 2010 10:00:00 EST. There are a lot of things to expect out of <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, including things that weren't in the game at launch which made some people rather unhappy. The game has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/29/captains-log-three-months-of-star-trek-online/">passed its three-month mark</a>, however, and seems to be doing fairly well for itself with updates coming at a steady clip. Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Craig-Zinkievich/">Craig Zinkievich</a> recently <a href="http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=22217">sat down for an interview</a> in which he discussed some of the upcoming content for the game, including the ever-popular pastime of any Deep Space 9 occupant: Dabo, the nebulously-defined gambling game that involved large sums of money and <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Leeta">attractive Bajoran attendants</a>.<br />
<br />
Beyond that, the staff is working on Memory Alpha and tweaking the difficulty of the special task forces, which they felt were just about right for the high end and a bit too difficult for the average player. They've also got the beginnings of plans for Season 2, including a raise to the skill point cap, Klingon Episodes, and a Federation diplomatic corps. The next update is tenatively scheduled for July.
