Most studios would be overjoyed to have pioneered one significant advancement in video game history, but then again, most studios aren't <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kesmai-corporation/">Kesmai</a>. While it's not a household name today, it's reasonable to say that without the heavy lifting and backbreaking coding that this company shouldered in the '80s and '90s, the MMO genre would've turned out very different indeed.<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/06/the-game-archaeologist-discovers-the-island-of-kesmai/"><br />
Last week</a> we met two enterprising designers, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kelton-flinn/">Kelton Flinn</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kesmai">John Taylor</a>, who recognized that multiplayer was the name of the future and put their careers on the line to see an idea through to completion. That idea was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/island-of-kesmai/"><em>Island of Kesmai</em></a>, an ancestor of the modern MMO that used crude ASCII graphics and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/compuserve/">CompuServe's</a> network to provide an interactive, cooperative online roleplaying experience. It wasn't the first MMO, but it was the first one published commercially, and sometimes that makes all the difference.<br />
<br />
Flinn and Taylor's Kesmai didn't stop with being the first to bring MMOs to the big time, however. Flush with cash and success, Kesmai turned its attention to the next big multiplayer challenge: 3-D graphics and real-time combat. Unlike the fantasy land of <em>Island of Kesmai</em>, this title would take to the skies in aerial dogfighting and prove even more popular than the team's previous project.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-kesmai-legacy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the Kesmai legacy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-kesmai-legacy/">The Game Archaeologist and the Kesmai legacy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 13:00:00 EST. The life expectancy of subscriptions -- and the enormous discussion swirling around it -- is at the forefront of Gamebreaker.TV's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/This-Week-In-MMO/">This Week in MMO</a>. Massively's own Rubi Bayer joins the crew as they analyze <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/mark-jacobs-ive-never-been-against-f2p/">Mark Jacobs' comments</a> on subscriptions vs. free-to-play. Jacobs' blunt labeling that most F2P games are "crap" is incendiary, although it's hard to deny there are a lot of shoddy titles out there.<br />
<br />
The roundtable goes on to talk about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/ccp-games-ceo-issues-letter-of-apology-to-eve-online-players/">CCP's apology to <em>EVE Online</em> players</a> and what's being done to repair faith, trust, and ship-spinning in the game. It seems that frank apologies from higher-ups to customers is en vogue these days, from <a href="http://blog.netflix.com/2011/09/explanation-and-some-reflections.html">Netflix</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/square-enix-says-ffxiv-greatly-damaged-final-fantasy-brand/">Square-Enix</a>, although it's debatable how much face is saved from such actions.<br />

In a brief interview today with MMORPG.com, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mark-Jacobs/">Mark Jacobs</a>, now president and creative director of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/City-State-Entertainment/">City State Entertainment</a>, discussed his thoughts on the F2P model and real-money trading.<br />
<br />
Jacobs is best known to gamers for his previous roles with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MythicEntertainment/">Mythic Entertainment</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ElectronicArts/">Electronic Arts</a> on such games as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Dark-Age-of-Camelot/">Dark Age of Camelot</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em>, and his opinions on the subject of gold-farming are infamous, possibly even extreme. We can't be the only ones who remember the early days of <em>WAR</em> when a crusading, irony-immune Jacobs spammed players' screens with popups whenever gold-spammers were banned. But in this interview, Jacobs aimed to set the record straight: He's against gold-farming specifically and how gold-farming hurts legitimate players, not the free-to-play model.
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	I've never been against F2P. What I was and still remain strongly opposed to is gold farming in games, especially MMOs that weren't designed from the beginning to handle those kind of transactions, and also to the groups that seek to profit from such transactions. What I really dislike isn't so much the gold farming/selling itself, but certain behaviors that occur in games where this happens.</blockquote>
He goes on to suggest that the F2P model has surged to prominence due to the weak economy and "a lack of really interesting MMOs," noting that we're due for a shift in the market but that the success of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars--The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em> (and its "license to print money" IP) will determine the viability of the subscription model in the future.<br />
<br />
Jacobs has plenty more to say in the full interview over at <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/5684/page/1">MMORPG.com</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/mark-jacobs-ive-never-been-against-f2p/">Mark Jacobs: 'I've never been against F2P'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/mark-jacobs-on-his-departure-from-mythic-and-ea/">It's been a couple of years</a> since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs/">Mark Jacobs</a> abruptly left -- or perhaps was let go -- from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">EA Mythic</a>, but curiosity around the split persists in the MMO industry. Yesterday, Jacobs <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-03-former-mythic-boss-explains-ea-split">opened up about the event</a> that occurred after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea/">EA's</a> acquisition of Mythic and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a>.<br />
<br />
Long story short: The merge brought about changes, and Jacobs wasn't on board with them. "They made a decision on a direction they wanted to go and obviously, as we put out in our joint statement, that wasn't a direction that had a role for me, or at least the role that I wanted. It really is as simple as that. Or at least publicly. Whatever went on behind the scenes, whatever we talked about, I have no intention of sharing that," he said.<br />
<br />
Jacobs insists that EA has been kind to him in the subsequent years. "One thing I'll say publicly about EA, they have been very good in what they've said post-departure regarding me. Similarly I've been good about what I've said about them post departure."<br />
<br />
He has since gone on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/30/mark-jacobs-returns-to-the-gaming-industry-with-city-state-enter/">to form a new company</a> to create social and mobile games. In an ironic twist, Jacobs says that the idea for getting into the social gaming market took root while he was at Mythic, but he left before acting on that notion.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/mark-jacobs-elaborates-on-departure-from-ea-mythic/">Mark Jacobs elaborates on departure from EA Mythic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 12:30:00 EST. If you've been around the MMO scene for a while, you'll remember <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> as the co-founder of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment/">Mythic Entertainment</a> and the force behind <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>.<br />
<br />
He's been out of the gaming industry since his <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/mythics-mark-jacobs-leaves-ea/">departure from EA</a>, but according to an exclusive interview with Forbes.com, he's back with a new company. "Jacobs revealed that his new company is called City State Entertainment, and [...] the company aims to create games for the mobile, tablet and social networking space," says Forbes.com's Tracey John.<br />
<br />
Mark tells Forbes that social game development allows for a faster development cycle and lower costs, which equals more freedom to simply have fun making games. "We don't have to worry if the hardcore gamers are going to get incredibly upset because we're doing something a certain way. We don't have to worry if our game is going to sell another 20 copies. We're just looking to make fun, enjoyable games."<br />

To this day, I don't know what quite came over me when I decided to throw my chips into the blogging scene to cover <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, eight months before the game launched. Like many of you, I had been a long-time reader of MMO blogs, but I was intimidated at trying my hand at joining in, perhaps elevating these writers to the status of legendary wordsmiths who penned unequaled prose in our lifetimes.<br />
<br />
Or I just didn't want to be one of a thousand <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> bloggers who dominated the scene. Just a thought.<br />
<br />
In any case, it was a terrific decision to do so on my part. I found that I had a passion not only for MMOs but for talking about them, and I loved connecting with other writers and readers and players, which happens with blogging. I've been asked from time to time if I regret picking <em>Warhammer Online</em> as the game that I latched onto for a couple of years, and I always say no -- no regrets. The game was fun, but the coverage was an unparalleled rollercoaster of anticipation, hype, fun, speculation, promise, disappointment, and above all, ideas. Wonderful, flawed, captivating ideas.<br />
<br />
I haven't touched <em>WAR </em>since 2010, so perhaps I'm not the best source for the latest and greatest in the game. But what I do have to offer is a humble blogger's perspective on what went right, what went wrong, and why I'm ultimately happy that <em>WAR </em>came into being and is chugging along on today, its third anniversary.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/18/warhammer-online-three-years-later/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer Online: Three years later</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/18/warhammer-online-three-years-later/">Warhammer Online: Three years later</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 18 Sep 2011 13:00:00 EST. It's been a rollercoaster ride over these past two months bringing the maddening -- and fascinating -- topics of "what if?" MMOs to light. We've covered a wide range of promising titles that were cut down before their release, from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/14/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-true-fantasy-live-onlin/"><em>True Fantasy Live Online</em></a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/19/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-mythica/"><em>Mythica</em></a>, and we've only scratched the surface. Unfortunately, the process of MMO development is rarely smooth and casualties can and do occur, which is why we now pay homage to these fallen games.<br />
<br />
While I'd love nothing more than to continue this series, I also feel that it's time to return to our normal format starting next week. So today marks the last "what if?" for now, and I've picked a mind-boggler of a game, one that not only frustrates us with its potential but one that asks a "what if?" question of its own.<br />
<br />
I'm talking about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/imperator/"><em>Imperator Online</em></a>, the MMO from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">Mythic Entertainment</a> that dared to ask "What if the Roman Empire never fell, but instead continued on to become a really radical futuristic online role-playing game setting?"<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-imperator-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: Imperator Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-imperator-online/">The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: Imperator Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 18:00:00 EST. You know that sinking feeling when you get into something that's way, waaaay over your head and you have no choice but to swim furiously or drown? That's exactly how I felt when I started to do research for this month's series on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mud/">MUDs</a> -- Multi-User Dungeons -- and their descendants.<br />
<br />
At first I was thrilled, because I knew that along with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/21/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-dragon-of-the-deep-dungeon/">Dungeons &amp; Dragons</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/31/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-sysops-sinister-stratagem/">Bulletin Board Systems</a>, the MUD was one of the key predecessors to the MMORPG as we know it today. It was, and still is, vital gaming history that helped to shape the genre. The only problem was that for various reasons -- mostly a lack of good internet access in college and general ignorance -- I'd missed out on MUDs back in the day.<br />
<br />
But it's not like that stopped me from covering any of the other games in this series that I never experienced first-hand way back when; after all, there are few among us who can honestly say they did everything. So the problem wasn't the lack of first-hand knowledge but the sheer, overwhelming scope of this subject. One game alone is a manageable subject -- MUDs are an entire genre unto themselves. It's intimidating, to say the least.<br />
<br />
It doesn't still my excitement, however, nor will it stop us from diving into this topic no matter how deep the waters get. This week we'll take a look at the brief history of the MUD/MUSH/MOO/et al. and then get into specific games later this month. So hold your breath and jump on in with me!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/the-game-archaeologist-plays-with-muds-the-history/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist plays with MUDs: The history</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/the-game-archaeologist-plays-with-muds-the-history/">The Game Archaeologist plays with MUDs: The history</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:00:00 EST. Earlier in the year when I started this column, I realized two things. First, I'd be giving myself as much as any of you a crash-course education in older MMOs, particularly with some of the more fringe titles that I'd never really explored up to this point. And second, it would be a challenge to find the right mix of elements to do these MMOs justice.<br />
<br />
So before we look back at all the games this column covered in 2010, I'd like to ask each and every one of you to take a minute and drop a comment about what you'd like to see <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">The Game Archaeologist</a> do next. What titles would you love to see honored in 2011? What features are the most interesting to you -- dev interviews, player interviews, history overviews, photo galleries, first impression playthroughs, or links to community fansites and blogs? What could I add to make The Game Archaeologist even better?<br />
<br />
I also want to take a minute to thank the readers, players and developers who have contributed to this column so far. While there are MMOs that get a lion's share of the press these days, we at Massively are committed to spotlighting as many of these games as possible, particularly if there's a passionate community and dev team behind them. I've loved hearing your stories and hope that in passing them along, perhaps we've opened a door or two to games that you might've never considered before.<br />
<br />
So let's hop in our hot air balloon and soar over the year that was 2010!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/28/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-year-that-was-2010/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the year that was 2010</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/28/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-year-that-was-2010/">The Game Archaeologist and the year that was 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 19:00:00 EST. Life is full of serendipitous moments. For example, the other day I found the Holy Grail at a garage sale while looking through a box of half-broken Transformers. Who would have thought? If only the Knights Templar took a few Saturdays off from their epic quest to do a bit of bargain shopping.<br />
<br />
Consider also that this month we've been reminiscing about <a href="http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> in this column -- looking at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/03/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-quest-for-camelot-the-history/">the history</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/10/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-quest-for-camelot-interview-with/">the devs</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-quest-for-camelot-your-journeys/">the players</a> -- and then, out of nowhere (well, technically Virginia) one of the key figures of this title returned from a year-long sabbatical. Mark Jacobs, who was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/mark-jacobs-on-his-departure-from-mythic-and-ea/">let go from EA</a> last June, <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/">recently popped back up on his personal blog</a> to talk about everything under the sun.<br />
<br />
Hey -- isn't <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot/"><em>DAoC</em></a> under the sun? Why yes, yes it is. So I threw on my hiking boots, strapped a machete to my thigh, hired a Sherpa, and then composed a quick message to see if Mr. Jacobs would be willing to be interviewed by the eccentric media. He agreed, as long as we stuck to the topic at hand and didn't veer into his plans for world domination. Whoops... I've said too much. Hit the jump before I get into hot water. My Sherpa hates hot water.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-quest-for-camelot-a-talk-with-ma/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the Quest for Camelot: A talk with Mark Jacobs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-quest-for-camelot-a-talk-with-ma/">The Game Archaeologist and the Quest for Camelot: A talk with Mark Jacobs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. It's easy to miss amongst all of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2010/">GDC 2010</a> coverage and news, but <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> and <a href="http://www.apb.com/"><em>All Points Bulletin</em></a> went into beta this week. Of course, not much new information has surfaced about either, both due to the relatively short time they've been out there and to the three letters that are the bane of any tester's existence: the NDA. Those documents are the barrier between whatever fun gameplay (or buggy, glitchy nightmares) the testers are experiencing and the eager public, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mark-Jacobs/">Mark Jacobs</a> has gone so far as to say on record that the earlier the NDA drops, the more confident a company is in its game.<br />
<br />
That doesn't mean that the NDA is an ironclad protection, of course. There are always one or two testers that find something so surprising, in either direction, that they consider it worth breaking the rules and being thrown out of testing for the chance to break a story. So put yourself in their shoes. What sort of things could you uncover within a game you were testing that would inspire you to break an NDA? Would you be more likely to break it for good news, or to warn other people off from a mess of a game?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/13/the-daily-grind-what-would-you-break-the-nda-for/">The Daily Grind: What would you break the NDA for?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Mar 2010 08:00:00 EST. We told you a couple of weeks ago about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/mythics-mark-jacobs-leaves-ea/">Mark Jacobs' departure from EA</a> and the formation of a new (as yet unnamed) studio which will absorb <a href="http://massively.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mythic">Mythic</a>. Well, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net">Eurogamer</a> got the <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/bioware-mythic-will-help-star-wars-mmo">chance</a> to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/biowares-dr-greg-zeschuk-interview">talk</a> to Greg Zeschuk, who has revealed Mythic will help out with <a href="http://www.swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> but BioWare might not reciprocate on <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>: <br /><em><br />"Ray </em>(Muzyka)<em> and I (have) both played Warhammer, and actually I've still been playing it on and off for a while, so I think for us it's not to much a popularity boost as just the fact that we can probably bring perspectives to the table that will be new and perhaps helpful to the guys from Mythic in the same way from an online perspective they can certainly share with us. To give credit to the Austin team </em>[making <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em>]<em>, we have a number of serious MMO veterans on there, so it's certainly not neophytes, but there's absolutely opportunities to share and learn things back and forth."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/08/bioware-says-mythic-will-help-with-star-wars-the-old-republic/">BioWare says Mythic will help with Star Wars: The Old Republic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 08 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST. This is an original opinion piece written by someone who has been following <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> since November 2007. Comments are open on page three.<br /><br />Many people claim <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> is a total fail-whale of an MMO. I can see sides of their argument, but I don't believe it's completely true. The "fail" perception mostly comes down to the expectations that were set by <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a> and <a href="http://ea.com">EA</a> and then never fully delivered upon. It's no secret they were aiming for 500k+ subs and then missed the mark (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/warhammer-holds-its-ground-with-300k-subs/">by about 200k</a>), but it got me wondering... Who is/was <em>WAR</em>'s target audience? Was their potential audience actually big enough to support their aspirations?<br /><br />Let's go back. Waaaaaaaaaaay back. Let's pretend we were a fly on the wall in a Mythic/EA/<a href="http://gamesworkshop.com">Games Workshop</a> boardroom as they were discussing the original vision and design direction for <em>WAR</em>. One of the first steps you take before developing any product is to define your target audience or demographic. Knowing your audience gives you better direction and allows you to focus your efforts and design decisions more clearly.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/what-audiences-should-mythic-have-targeted-with-warhammer-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What audiences should Mythic have targeted with Warhammer Online?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/what-audiences-should-mythic-have-targeted-with-warhammer-online/">What audiences should Mythic have targeted with Warhammer Online?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 19:00:00 EST. We've had comments and opinions flying in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/more-reactions-to-biowaaagh/">from all over the internet</a> regarding <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/mythics-mark-jacobs-leaves-ea/">Mark Jacobs' departure from Mythic and EA</a>, but finally we get to hear from the man himself, in a new post with the heading <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/2009/06/25/all-things-must-come-to-an-end/">"All Things Must Come to an End"</a> on his <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com">personal blog</a>. Much of this post is devoted to thanking and farewelling his former co-workers, and he mentioned that there will be more thanks to come -- there's no doubt he would have built a great many relationships throughout his journey with Mythic and EA.<br /><br />As for Jacobs' comments on the reasons for him leaving, we don't find it out too much, but he did have have this to say:<br /><br /><em>Early in May, Electronic Arts let me know that they wanted to make some changes within the Games Label and as a result of those changes I have been out of the office (and out of touch with the team, game, etc.) since that day.</em><br /><br />and:<br /><br /><em>However, if you are looking or expecting me to damn EA or anyone there, you will be sorely disappointed. Over my 23 years of making games professionally I have refrained from attacking the competition, former and/or current partners, other game developers, etc. except on a few very rare instances. I have no intention of breaking with tradition at the present time and I hope my track record in this regard remains unchanged for the rest of my career.</em><br /><br />We will be keeping an eye on Jacobs' blog for the additional posts he has promised.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/mark-jacobs-on-his-departure-from-mythic-and-ea/">Mark Jacobs on his departure from Mythic and EA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 08:30:00 EST. Here's a summary of what we've found so far.<br /><br />Many people are under the false impression that Mythic and BioWare have merged. One of Mythic's developers <a href="http://vnboards.ign.com/warhammer_online_age_of_reckoning_general_board/b22997/111187489/r111188767/">made this clarification</a>: <em>"We're still Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Studio, as we have been. Jeff Hickman just addressed the <em>WAR</em> community in an <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=812">open Executive Producer's letter</a> and we've seen the new RvR mega-zone featured in both <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=813">an official FAQ</a> and <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=800">community Grab Bag</a>.<br /><br />It's a bit strange seeing <a href="http://massively.com/tag/jeff-hickman">Jeff Hickman</a> in print since he's usually on the front-lines doing live interviews. Also, <em>WAR</em> fans have gotten used to seeing Mythic GM, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a>, deliver these kinds of letters in the past. Actually, Mark has been remarkably silent since March when he delivered his <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/mark-jacobs-on-war-6-month-state-of-the-game/">6-month State of the Game</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/30/war-1-21-patch-hitting-the-public-test-server-this-week/">1.21 patch highlight </a>announcements.<br /><br />At any rate, you can find out pretty much everything there is to know about The <a href="http://massively.com/tag/land-of-the-dead">Land of the Dead</a> in these three recent articles. But Beckett has named <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hilmar-petursson">Hilmar P&eacute;tursson</a> of CCP Games as the second most influential figure in the MMO industry (up from #4 last year), with SOE's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley">John Smedley</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jack-emmert">Jack Emmert</a> from Cryptic Studios, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> from Mythic Entertainment rounding out the top 5. <br /><br />In addition to the major, established industry names you'd expect to see on the list, there are 10 newcomers this year, including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-coleman">Todd Coleman</a> from KingsIsle Entertainment, studio director for <a href="http://www.wizard101.com"><em>Wizard101</em></a> which recently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/30/wizard101-hits-2-million-unique-user-mark/">hit the milestone of 2 million unique users</a>.<br /><br />While Beckett Massive Online Gamer <a href="http://www.beckett.com/estore/news/?eskin=subMOG&amp;a=10166&amp;s=118">makes the list available online</a>, the magazine offers background on each individual and how they've influenced the future of the industry.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/beckett-massive-online-gamer-names-top-20-individuals-in-the-mmo/">Beckett Massive Online Gamer names Top 20 individuals in the MMO industry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 20:00:00 EST. A minor note in <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6209194.html?tag=result;title;0">EA's most recent earnings report</a> revealed that as of March 31, 2009, <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> had over 300,000 subscribers, which is right about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/breaking-300k-warhammer-online-subscribers-as-of-december-31-2/">where it was at in December 2008</a>. What's that we hear in the distance? I do believe it's the sound of thousands of haters and fanboys doing glorious forum battle.<br /><br />Three hundred thousand players is actually a pretty good number these days. In fact, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/eve-online-turns-6-today-announces-over-300k-subscribers/">CCP was extremely happy to announce hitting the 300k+ mark</a> today, on <a href="http://eveonline.com"><em>EVE</em></a>'s 6th birthday. Most MMO analysts would probably say <em>WAR</em> is one of the top 5 subscription MMOs in Europe/North America.<br /><br />On the other hand, <a href="http://ea.com">EA</a> and <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a> can't be too happy about the current population situation since Mark Jacobs has made a couple famous remarks about population numbers in the past. The first is that <em>WAR</em> would be successful if it had <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/08/29/ea-mythic-activision-world-of-warcraft-estimate-is-overblown/">north of 500k subscribers</a>. The second is that <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/what-does-wars-success-or-failure-mean-for-the-mmorpg-market/">250k subscribers doesn't look too good to investors</a> when you've made an initial investment of over $50M and have high maintenance costs. You might also want to factor in that Mythic started a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/20/warhammer-online-launches-recruit-a-friend-offer/">recruit-a-friend program</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/war-gets-an-official-free-trial-in-na-europe-and-oceania/">free trial</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/war-to-invade-russia/">launched in Russia</a> all during the period of the quarter being reported on.<br /><br />With <a href="http://www.aiononline.com/us/"><em>Aion</em></a> set for release in fall 2009, <em>WAR</em> may soon face some stiff competition on the PvP/RvR front. A lot may be riding on Mythic's new live expansion, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/land-of-the-dead">The Land of the Dead</a> set for release this summer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/warhammer-holds-its-ground-with-300k-subs/">Warhammer holds its ground with 300k subs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 06 May 2009 20:00:00 EST. While the patch number suggests this won't be a major patch, the highlights suggest otherwise.<br /><br />Most people agree the biggest issue on <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com/">Mythic</a>'s plate right now is combat responsiveness. Currently, players experience a sigificant "stretch" or "pause" when executing longer duration abilities (animation glitches don't help matters either). Mark says this issue will be fixed in under "normal" gameplay conditions, but may still exist to a degree under high server load.<br /><br />Other items of note are improvements to the keep siege system that will allow guilds who claim keeps to upgrade their defenses, a <a href="http://massively.com/tag/land-of-the-dead">Beyond the Sands</a> live event, more bug fixes, and special versions of the Gates of Ekrund and Nordenwatch scenarios.<br /><br />The balance issue with stacked ground target area of effect damage spells introduced in the previous patch is not touched upon in Mark's highlights, but <a href="http://massively.com/tag/adam-gershowitz">Adam Gershowitz</a> made a post on the <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=archetype_ranged&amp;thread.id=416">Ranged Damage Dealers forum detailing the changes</a> coming in 1.21. Overall, this is looking like a solid patch as fans await 1.3.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/30/war-1-21-patch-hitting-the-public-test-server-this-week/">WAR 1.21 patch hitting the public test server this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> just released his <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>WAR</em></a> <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=693">State of the Game announcement</a>. I think this is a pretty important one because next week <em>marks</em> <span style="font-style: italic;">WAR</span>'s 6-month anniversary. Here are my thoughts about it.<br /><br />I found the intro paragraphs to be pretty standard for this type of announcement. On the plus side he's admitting that <em>WAR</em> isn't where they'd like it to be but he balances that by patting his own back. I realize he needs to say these things for shareholders, but comments like this always make me roll my eyes: <em>"Given the proximity of these two releases, I think it is pretty safe to say that these represent one of the largest (if not <em>the</em> largest) amount of new content, tweaks, adjustments, etc. to any MMO over the course of several months."</em> I simply love how someone can spin nearly 1,000 bug and polish fixes into a good thing (especially at the six-month point in the game's life cycle). It is and it isn't, y'know?<br /><br />Anyway, on to the meat and potatoes of the SotG. Mark mentioned 11 key areas of focus for the next few months. Here are my impressions of these sections (find his original text in <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=693">the official SotG letter</a>).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/massively-re-arms-for-war-state-of-the-opinion-address/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively re-arms for WAR: State of the opinion address</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/massively-re-arms-for-war-state-of-the-opinion-address/">Massively re-arms for WAR: State of the opinion address</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com/">Mythic</a> VP/GM/CEO, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> just delivered his highly anticipated <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=693">State of the Game announcement</a> for <a href="http://warhammeronline.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span></a> one week before the six-month anniversary of its release. Mythic is currently in the midst of <a href="http://massively.com/tag/call-to-arms">Call to Arms</a>, their first live expansion, and recently delivered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/warhammer-onlines-1-2-patch-might-just-bring-you-back/">a whopping patch</a> that fixed over 500 bugs and introduced two new careers (the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/massively-re-arms-for-war-slayer/">Slayer</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/massively-re-arms-for-war-meet-da-choppa/">Choppa</a>).<br /> <br /> Mark states that the next iteration in this series of patches (1.21) will fix 400+ more bugs, attempt to balance the careers even further, and deliver more new content. The 1.21 patch will launch next month. Details on their 1.3 patch are a bit foggy, but they may deal with items from the following list, which Mark calls the "<span style="font-style: italic;">Eleven Enticing Enhancements</span>" list for <span style="font-style: italic;">WAR:<br /><br /> </span>
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Client/Server performance in RvR</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Bug &amp; Polish</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Open RvR in general</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Keeps in general</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Keep Defense</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Battlefield Objectives</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Zone Capture</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Zone Capture rewards</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">City Raiding for fun and profit</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Career Balancing</span></li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Scenarios<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></span></li>
</ul>
Finally, Mark touches upon the progress being made with the new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/mega-dungeon-called-the-lands-of-the-dead-coming-to-warhammer-on/">Tomb Kings themed dungeon</a>. Fans of <a href="http://darkageofcamelot.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Dark Age of Camelot</span></a> will not only find it reminiscent of <a href="http://massively.com/tag/darkness-falls">Darkness Falls</a>, they will also find some new and exhilarating experiences. In part 2, we put the same questions to and Frank "<a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/member.php?u=113568">PhoenixRed</a>" Sanchez of <a href="http://warhammeralliance.com">Warhammer Alliance</a>...<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What was your immediate reaction to Mythic's announcement that they will be hosting official <em>WAR</em> forums and why?</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">PhoenixRed:</span> We actually learned about OFs for <em>WAR</em> back in December. There were some rumblings and some goings on within the company and we have a few connections over there that told us this might be coming down the pipe. My original reaction, one that still persists to this day, is curiosity. Those people that know Mark Jacobs and Mythic from back in the days of DAOC know that they've never had any kind of preference to have official forums for a variety of reasons. They are a huge cost and definitely a huge time sink. The other reaction I had was "Wow!" It's going to be insane. Speaking as someone who has moderated forums over the past decade or so, it's definitely a challenge. I wish the community team and moderators responsible for managing and herding the community nothing but the best. I sure hope the people they bring on board have prior experience with online communities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/unofficial-forums-sound-off-part-2-phoenixred/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Unofficial forums sound off: Part 2 (PhoenixRed)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/unofficial-forums-sound-off-part-2-phoenixred/">Unofficial forums sound off: Part 2 (PhoenixRed)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 13:00:00 EST. Caught up in the hubbub of <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tags/call-to-arms">Call to Arms announcement</a> for <em><a href="http://warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em> was the revelation that they would soon be <a href="http:// http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/mythic-announces-official-forums-for-war-with-a-twist/">launching an official forum (OF) for the game</a>. Since release, the brunt of these responsibilities has fallen to unofficial forums like <a href="http://warhammeralliance.com">Warhammer Alliance</a> (WHA) and IGN's <a href="http://warhammervault.ign.com">Warhammer Vault</a>. These forums/fansites are currently the place to go if you want to catch the attention of a developer or simply engage the <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>WAR</em></a> community in a healthy (and sometimes unhealthy) debate on the state of the game or feature X vs. feature Y.<br /><br />Obviously, there are benefits and drawbacks to having your community spread across several unofficial forums. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ryan-shwayder/">Ryan Shwayder</a> of <a href="http://nerfbat.com">Nerfbat</a> recently came up with a list of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/three-things-official-unofficial-forums-can-and-cant-do/">three things official and unofficial forums can and can't do</a>. One of the biggest questions people have right now is, "What will happen with the unofficial forums once Mythic launches OFs?" Will they remain relevant or fade away into obscurity?<br /><br />We here at Massively decided to get the official word from the unofficial sources on this matter and had a chance to interview <a href="http://club.ign.com/b/about?username=-Mithan-&amp;which=vn">Mithan</a>, head admin for all VN boards and Frank "<a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/member.php?u=113568">PhoenixRed</a>" Sanchez, assistant site manager at <a href="http://warhammeralliance.com">WHA</a>. To address this, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-jacobs/">Mark Jacobs</a> announced three big patches that would be landing shortly called 1.1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/warhammer-online-patch-1-1-1-drops-onto-the-live-servers-today/">Patch 1.1.1</a> was announced to little fanfare (although it did address some T4 concerns with fortresses) and it was noted that many of the fixes originally intended for 1.1.1 were bumped to 1.2 because they needed additional testing.<br /><br /><a href="http://vnboards.ign.com/warhammer_online_age_of_reckoning_general_board/b22997/110197320/p1/">Mark just made a post on VN giving everyone a sneak peak of what to expect in patch 1.2</a>; a patch he has officially titled <span><span><span id="ctl00_ctl00_cphMain_cphMain_ccSkin_ctl00_ucBoardTopicView_ccSkin_ctl00_rptMessages_ctl00_ucMessageView_ccSkin_ctl00_bcMessageBody">the<em> Bugs, Careers, RvR, Bugs, Items and Bugs Patch</em>. You see, Mythic GM, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> has been very outspoken about his disdain for OFs. At one point <a href="http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?p=854395#post854395">he had this to say when questioned if WAR would ever have OFs</a>. He hated the idea of them that much...<br /><br />There must have been some pretty good reasons to reverse such a staunch view on OFs and <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=603">Mark was kind enough to elaborate in an open letter to the community</a>. It simply comes down to being able to better support the players of WAR. Apparently, Mythic is also willing to invest in paid full and part-time moderators and a powerful forum platform to ensure these internal support boards don't become <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/15/mark-jacobs-rails-against-official-forums/">a cesspool of hate and discrimination</a>.<br /><br />Here's Mythic's official twist. The forums will be very light-weight graphically. They will not run ads of any sort. There will be a strict code of conduct, but it won't hamper <em>constructive</em> negative feedback. Anyone familiar with the <a href="http://massively.com/tag/warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> beta boards should feel quite at home. Only active subscribers will be able to post. You can "level up" on these forums by contributing to intelligent discussion. This will give you access to special boards where Mark and the other devs will post frequently. More details on Mythic's official forums will be coming shortly, but you can expect to see them in action during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/30/mark-jacobs-elaborates-on-call-to-arms-and-warhammers-future/">February's public test of the 1.2 patch</a>. I wonder what this will mean for the unofficial forums.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/mythic-announces-official-forums-for-war-with-a-twist/">Mythic announces official forums for WAR (with a twist)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 31 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. The<a href="http://warhammervault.ign.com/"> WAR Vault</a> was lucky enough to get <a href="http://warhammervault.ign.com/View.php?view=Movies.Detail&amp;id=223">an exclusive sneak peek behind the walls of</a> <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic Entertainment</a> and they captured it on video for all <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> fans to see. The tour goes way beyond the well-known paper mache squigs and walls of concept art. They actually chat with staff members from many of of the teams including community, combat and careers, RvR, art, design, and even speak with general manager, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-jacobs/">Mark Jacobs</a>.<br /><br />Staff members are more than happy to answer fluffy questions like: <em>What got you into gaming? </em>and <em>What has been your favourite MMO experience so far? </em>They also field more pressing questions like: <em><em>How is the RvR/PvE balance? How will the Slayer differ from the table top game?</em> <em>What's changed about the Choppa since he was pulled from beta?</em> <em>What's next for RvR?</em> <em>and</em> <em>How do you attempt to balance 24 careers?</em><br /></em><br />Mark Jacobs even fields questions on the most difficult challenge a developer faces making an MMO (expectations) and when we can expect to see a official <a href="http://massively.com/tag/war/"><em>WAR</em></a> expansion (they won't be following the old one-expansion-per-year model).<em><br /><br /></em>Finally, there are even two tiny teasers: 1) a massive pendulum is swinging back and forth in-game, while two developers discuss how the players will interact with it in an RvR setting and 2) <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mark-davis/">Mark Davis</a> talks about some of the interesting mechanics behind the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/the-dwarf-slayer-and-orc-choppa-coming-to-warhammer-online-with/">Twisting Tower scenario</a> (bring a barf bag if you experience motion sickness).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/30/plenty-of-gems-in-virtual-tour-video-of-mythic-entertainment-off/">Plenty of gems in virtual tour video of Mythic Entertainment offices</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Jan 2009 15:30:00 EST. While he believes this live expansion <em>is one of the largest <span><span><span id="ctl00_ctl00_cphMain_cphMain_ccSkin_ctl00_ucBoardTopicView_ccSkin_ctl00_rptMessages_ctl00_ucMessageView_ccSkin_ctl00_bcMessageBody">subscription-based content upgrades/addons done by any MMO developer</span></span></span></em>, he wants to assure everyone that this is only a part of their development plans for the next several months of <a href="http://massively.com/tag/war/"><em>WAR</em></a>.<br /><br />The first part of his letter deals with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/mythic-announces-the-first-live-expansion-to-warhammer-online/">Call to Arms expansion</a> and hits on topics such as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/the-dwarf-slayer-and-orc-choppa-coming-to-warhammer-online-with/">new careers</a>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/valentines-day-in-warhammer-online-announced-as-the-night-of-mu/">live events</a>, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/mega-dungeon-called-the-lands-of-the-dead-coming-to-warhammer-on/">Tomb Kings themed RvR dungeon</a>. The second part talks about some of the major game improvements fans can expect to see over this expansion arc, including: bug fixes, better fortress performance, RvR changes and improvements (e.g., keep upgrades, zone domination system, additional rewards, etc.), career balancing, and increased polish (e.g., armour and mount diversity, mail system improvements, enhanced guild rewards, etc.). All of these latter improvements will be coming in the 1.2 patch, which should hit the public test server in early February. While not giving us details on the content or a timeframe, Mark stated that even more game improvements will be coming in a 1.3 patch.<br /><br />It seems many players were expecting specific details about these upcoming changes. Mark responded by saying he is unwilling to post official patch notes until they have been thoroughly tested on the public test server. One of these is simply to see how the new population threshold is working, to determine if and how it should be tweaked with respect to balance and design issues. At the same time, they will be keeping an eye on the Fortress Lords to make sure that their difficulty aligns with the number of players attending a siege. The third change will involve optimizing the code that deals with large-scale battles, in the hopes of being able to open up the population threshold some more. Let's hope they succeed with this last effort, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/counterpoint-on-warhammer-onlines-fortress-siege-population-cap/">some fans already have their torches and pitchforks out</a> due to the reduced scale of these end-game encounters.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/11/mark-jacobs-details-future-fortress-changes/">Mark Jacobs details future Fortress changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 16:00:00 EST. Yes, you didn't blink when you read the title. Of course, the award was made by Alex Litel of "Bell, Game, and Candle" at <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com">GameSetWatch</a> and it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but it really shows how connected Jacobs is with all of the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> hype.<br /><br />Litel's article showcases the many press release quotes that just make you tilt your head in confusion and wonder why exactly someone wrote that for marketing purposes. Quotes such as <a href="http://www.cliffyb.com/blog/">Cliffy B</a> calling the original <a href="http://www.gearsofwar.com"><em>Gears of War</em></a> "...just a tease, an appetizer to <em>Gears of War</em> characters and new style of gameplay" just to ramp up marketing for <em>Gears of War 2</em>.<br /><br />Litel inserted the Mark Jacobs award because he thought it would be <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2008/12/column_bell_game_and_candle_to.php">unfair to include Mark Jacob's quotes</a> in with the other quotes he gathered. With all of the passion Mark puts behind his marketing promises, including Jacobs's quotes would turn the article into a countdown of Mark Jacobs moments. So, the quotes were left out, but the spirit of Jacobs remained alive and well.<br /><br />If you want to see all 50 quotes, and which quote got the coveted award, head on over to GameSetWatch and <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2008/12/column_bell_game_and_candle_to.php">check out Litel's article</a>. We certainly got a few chuckles out of it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/29/the-winner-of-the-mark-jacobs-award-for-corporate-community-achi/">The winner of the Mark Jacobs Award for Corporate Community Achievement is...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 20:00:00 EST. In fact, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/warhammer-online-patches-to-1-1b-just-days-after-1-1a/">even the patches needed some patching</a>. Some major issues <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a> has been working to fix are the frequent crashes-to-desktop and other lockups players have been reporting. The latest word from Mythic's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> is that the client crashes have been drastically reduced, down by 75% (in North America). In fact, client crashes are now at their lowest point ever, either in development or since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> went live, Jacobs said. <br /><br />But he wasn't writing to the <em>Warhammer Online</em> player base just to talk about patches and crash fixes. Jacobs also announced a holiday gift for all <em>WAR</em> players that doesn't involve <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/drunk-and-disorderly-in-warhammers-keg-end-holiday-event/">dwarves and debauchery</a>.<em> Warhammer Online</em> players now enjoy an experience bonus, as of December 18th. Jacobs stated Mythic decided to increase the rest experience multiplier bonus, while <em>"...reducing the time that it takes you to earn rested xp while logged out of the game, especially in Tiers 3 and 4. This will result in players' time to level being approximately 10% faster in Tier 2 and 20% faster in Tiers 3 and 4."</em> Jacobs didn't state how long this revved up leveling curve will last, but stated it would be for "a few weeks."<hr />

In a lengthy thread over at the VN boards, players began offering up a number of thoughts about <a href="http://vnboards.ign.com/warhammer_online_age_of_reckoning_general_board/b22997/109643703/r109648028/">what they'd like to see in the first expansion</a> to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a>'s <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em>. They had a couple of great ideas, too, with thread-starter DiscipleofWar suggesting it focus on the fabled <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araby_(Warhammer)">Land of the Dead</a>. That would allow players to come up against the forces of the Tomb Kings, fun objective-based gameplay for each faction, and even the introduction of a new third 'Dogs of War' army that will allow players to play ruthless mercenaries.<br /><br />Surprisingly, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> dropped in to add his own view on the conversation. Mr. Jacobs states that they are actually not working on the expansion at all right now, other than in theoretical design work. The reason is very straightforward: <em>"We are not pushing an XPack out the door at the expense of WAR. And once we begin work on an XPack, it's going to take us quite a while to do it."</em> They don't want to take away from the tuning problems and issues that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>Warhammer</em></a> currently has just to push on to an expansion. Good on you, Mythic! Music to the players' ears, we imagine. <hr />

Jacobs writes that the coming months will bring some changes and additions to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a>:<br />
<ul>
    <li>An RvR Influence system. <em>"This system is designed to reward our oRvR players with lots of new stuff that you can only get through oRvR,"</em> he says. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Increased visibility of open RvR, made possible through numerous improvements such as improved maps and travel systems, second bind points, a campaign HUD, and tier-wide messaging about the status of battlefield objectives and keeps. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Greater incentives for oRvR participation, namely through keep quests, 'Daily Event Quests,' and chained RvR missions. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li>Better rewards for guilds that take and control keeps, and a system of keep upgrades. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li> Allowing characters to gain oRvR "Fame", linked to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tome-of-knowledge">Tome of Knowledge</a> and thus rewards, titles, and experience that come with oRvR success. </li>
</ul>
Jacobs cautions though, <em>"Please keep in mind that these changes/systems apply to oRvR only and not to scenarios. This is not all we are working on but these do reflect the majority of oRvR additions that we are currently working on/planning for the next few months."</em> Jacobs hopes that open RvR enhancements will inject more risk and challenge into this aspect of the game, and ultimately more rewards. Check out <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=472">his dev blog</a> where he outlines the changes to open RvR and let us know, do you think <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> is headed in the right direction with this system revamp?<hr />

<p>Mythic dev Mark Jacobs writes that the combat and careers patches for <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/">Warhammer Online</a></em> will <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=454">not be appearing in patch 1.0.5</a> as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/what-warhammer-patch-1-05-means-for-you/">previously planned</a> and are instead being rescheduled for patch 1.0.6. <em>"Our plan was that no patch would make it through the [Public Test Servers] until we were sure that it was tested thoroughly and properly."</em> writes Jacobs, <em>"It was evident throughout the testing process that some of the changes needed to be reconsidered and some changed outright."</em></p>
<p>Patch 1.0.5 is going to deploy to live servers tomorrow (Tuesday, 18 November), with fixes/improvements to the Realm War system, and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/heavy-metal-live-event-brings-two-new-careers-to-warhammer-onlin/">"Heavy Metal" Live Event </a>that sets the stage for the <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/empire/KnightoftheBS.php">Knight of the Blazing Sun</a> and <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/armiesofWAR/darkelves/BlackGuard.php">Blackguard</a>.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/warhammer-combat-and-careers-patches-pushed-back/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Warhammer combat and careers patches pushed back</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/warhammer-combat-and-careers-patches-pushed-back/">Warhammer combat and careers patches pushed back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 19:30:00 EST. While there's still a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/ncsoft-announces-martial-arts-mmo-blade-and-soul/ ">steady influx of Asian games</a> reworked to fit western playstyles, there's also a growing number of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/when-western-mmos-go-east/">western MMOs being exported to Asia</a>, particularly Korea. The obvious title that succeeds anywhere it goes is <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, whose Asian following is legion. But smaller games have also been making inroads. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com "><em>EVE Online</em></a> has been operating in China for years and <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com "><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> gained a new lease on life in Korea. They're not alone in this. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> has its eyes set on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/lotros-korean-launch-may-alter-western-business-model/">expanding into Korea</a> with <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, and we know that <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/age-of-conan-expands-its-bloody-conquest-to-korea/ ">marching eastward</a>, too. The latest successful western title to look east is <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, which will soon be played in Korea as well. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/electronic-arts">Electronic Arts</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangame">Hangame</a> are partnering to bring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> to South Korea. In a related press statement, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mythic's Mark Jacobs</a> said, <em>"By partnering with Hangame, we hope to provide Korean gamers with a fresh, new fantasy experience and years' worth of Realm vs. Realm adventures on the frontlines of WAR."</em> You can see the <a href="http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/hangame-and-ea-to-bring,620760.shtml">full announcement about <em>WAR's</em> attempt to capture Korean gamers</a> over at The Earth Times. Given how PvP-centric Korean MMOs tend to be, do you think <em>Warhammer Online</em> would be a natural fit for gamers in this market?<hr />

If you're playing <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> right now, odds apparently are that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/want-to-leave-wow-for-conan-or-warhammer-good-luck">you'll be doing that for some time to come</a>. That's the word straight from sister site Joystiq, which listened in on the Activision/Blizzard financials conference call earlier this week. In speaking to the assembled business-types Blizzard President Mike Morhaime <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/wow-players-coming-back-from-the-war/">reiterated earlier statements</a>, saying something like 70% of folks who left <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> for <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> are already back. Of the players that left the game for <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, almost 50% of them have already returned to the Azerothian fold. <br /><br />Mark Jacobs may have <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/war-has-only-just-begun-to-compete-with-wow-declares-mark-jacob/">pooh-pooh'd Blizzard claims</a> (on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/mythic-awe-blizzard-you-shouldnt-have/">more than one occassion</a>) but anecdotally it certainly seems like Shattrath has been a busy place in the last few weeks. These numbers, of course, are all in advance of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a>'s launch next week. Analysts see <em>Wrath of the Lich King</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/analysts-see-world-of-warcraft-adding-another-million-subscriber/">garnering a whole new wave of attention</a> to the game, and within the next few weeks we could see announcements of even more individuals signing into Blizzard's juggernaut of a title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/looking-to-leave-world-of-warcraft-good-luck/">Looking to leave World of Warcraft? The idea that you only play one is really kind of silly.' </em>Mark was of course referring to the idea that if someone stopped playing <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> they were playing <em><a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com">WAR</a>, </em>and if they started playing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">WoW</a> </em>again they must have stopped playing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online">WAR</a>.</em><br /><br />While there is obviously no law that says you <em>must</em> play only one fantasy game or SF game, we did wonder just how 'silly' it is to expect gamers to pick one game and prioritize that. Not everyone has the resources, or the time, or the inclination to keep multiple MMOs on the go. For many gamers, it <em>is</em> an issue of having one primary MMO to which they devote their time.<br /><br />Are you one of these? Do you have one main MMO that takes up most of your gaming time? Or do you spread your time around over multiple titles?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/the-daily-grind-are-you-a-one-game-gamer/">The Daily Grind: Are you a one-game gamer?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 08:00:00 EST. <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a> CEO and <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> is a man who speaks his mind in the face of opposition and criticism. In truth, it's an admirable trait, even if it might occasionally cause some trouble. In the face of criticism from forum trolls and <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> COO Paul Sams, he posted a <a href="http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=14972.msg529849#msg529849">super-long defense of his game and himself</a>. That's interesting on its own, but there's a gem hidden inside. Jacobs claimed that <a href="http://www.ea.com">EA</a> wanted to shut down <a href="http://www.uoherald.com"><em>Ultima Online</em></a>, but he saved it!<br /><br />Jacobs was defending himself against the accusation that he has a thin skin to criticism by listing things he's weathered and done over the course of his career. Listing those, he said he was "blamed for the state <em>UO</em> is in," but went on to say that "EA wanted to shut down <em>UO</em> when they gave it to us but I convinced them to spend more money on the game."<br /><br />While it's not surprising that EA wanted to can <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ultima-online"><em>UO</em></a>, we're not sure whether to believe he was solely responsible for <em>UO</em>'s rescue -- but if that really did happen, well, uhh... thanks, Mark Jacobs!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5066138/mark-jacobs-+-saviour-of-britania ">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/mark-jacobs-says-ea-wanted-to-kill-uo-but-he-saved-it/">Mark Jacobs says EA wanted to kill UO, but he saved it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST.
