Have an itching desire to be an amateur filmmaker, but all you have to work with is a video camera and your toys? No problem -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lego-universe/"><em>LEGO Universe</em></a> and The Ones and Zeros Pixelshow think that's all you need to become the next hit director!<br />
<br />
From now until August 5th, you can film and submit your very own LEGO "Brickbuster" in the Build-a-Brickbuster Animated Film Contest. The best of the best stop-motion machinima will be awarded prizes, showcased at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pixelfest/">Pixelfest</a> in Broomfield, Colorado on August 13th and 14th, and included in a special DVD later this year.<br />
<br />
Pixelfest Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dylan-Krider/">Dylan Krider</a> sees this as a perfect cross-over between the MMO and real world: <em>"When players aren't busy battling to save imagination in </em>LEGO Universe<em>, they can bring their wildest creations to life with virtual building and behavior tools that make it simple for anyone to make their own machinima creations."</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/lego-universe-dares-you-to-make-a-brickbuster/">LEGO Universe dares you to make a 'Brickbuster'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 21 Jul 2011 10:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/eve-spotlight">EVE Spotlight</a> is a biweekly feature in which we interview prominent members of </em><a href="http://www.eve-online.com">EVE Online</a><em>'s player community or development team. Every two weeks, we'll be shining the spotlight on a player or developer who has a significant impact on </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/">EVE</a><em> to highlight the efforts of </em>EVE<em>'s most influential people.</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is well-known for its community's awesome cinematic productions, and no film is more renowned than the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/clear-skies/">incredible machinima Clear Skies</a>. Directed by <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ian-chisholm">Ian Chisholm</a>, Clear Skies seamlessly merges in-game <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> footage with scenes composed using Valve's Source development kit. The films follow the adventures of captain John Rourke and his crew aboard the Minmatar Tempest class battleship Clear Skies. With more luck than sense, the Clear Skies crew continually finds itself in sticky situations but manages to come out on top.<br />
<br />
The first Clear Skies film won the award for best long-format film at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">2008 annual Machinima Filmfest</a>, and a second film solidified the series' huge cult following. Clear Skies has even inspired other players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/19/eve-spotlight-an-interview-with-kyoko-sakoda/">like Kyoko Sakoda</a> to produce their own cinematic masterpieces set in the <em>EVE Online</em> universe. The third and probably final film in the Clear Skies series <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/clear-skies-3-machinima-undocks-to-excited-fans/">was released earlier this week</a>, absolutely shattering all expectations.<br />

Three years ago, the <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> community stood in awe of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">the incredible <em>EVE</em> machinima Clear Skies</a>, directed by Ian Chisholm and written by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ian-chisholm/">Ian Chisholm</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/richie-powles/">Richie Powles</a>. Featuring a combination of space footage filmed in <em>EVE</em> and scenes inside ships composed using the source SDK (Not Garry's mod), the 40-minute masterpiece delivered an impressive blend of action, story and British humour. The film spawned a cult following <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=783871">both inside</a> and outside the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a> community, going on to win the award for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">best long-format film at 2008's annual Machinima awards</a>.<br />
<br />
Fans cried out for more, and around a year later <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/clear-skies-2-has-been-released/">our patience was rewarded with Clear Skies II</a>. It was somehow bigger, better and more polished than the first film, with a wide range of new voices and some old favourites making a return. We once again followed the adventures of captain John Rourke of the Minmatar battleship Clear Skies and loved every minute of it. The film was a huge hit with fans, but with the story wrapped up in a somewhat neat package and Ian expressing a desire to take a break from production, we weren't sure if a third film would ever see the light of day. Fans of the series were excited to find out this week that <a href="http://www.clearskiesthemovie.com/">Clear Skies III has now officially undocked</a>.<br />
<br />
Skip past the cut to watch the Clear Skies III trailer and find out about the third film in this incredible series.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/clear-skies-3-machinima-undocks-to-excited-fans/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Clear Skies 3 machinima undocks to excited EVE fans</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/clear-skies-3-machinima-undocks-to-excited-fans/">Clear Skies 3 machinima undocks to excited EVE fans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 14:00:00 EST. So you want to get started in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Nexon/">Nexon</a>'s <a href="http://maplestory.nexon.net/"><em>MapleStory</em></a>? It can be a little bit baffling at times, as you could expect from starting a new game. But the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/New-Leaf-Saga/">New Leaf Saga</a> is designed to help players get accustomed to the game through a gentle series of animated game videos showing off how the game works. Our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/24/maplestory-exclusive-cartoon-new-leaf-saga/">last exclusive installment</a> dealt with the plethora of classes available in the game, but the newest installment deals with a problem that can apply to almost any game.<br />
<br />
Our intrepid protagonist, still struggling to find her place within the game, is ready to head off and adventure with her pet dragon and her friend. Unfortunately, said friend needs to briefly step away from the computer to take care of some other matters, and the new girl starts getting a little bored. If you're a fan of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/MapleStory/">MapleStory</a></em>, new to the game, or just new to MMOs in general, skip on past the break to give the latest episode of the New Leaf Saga a quick watch.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/02/exclusive-new-episode-of-maplestorys-new-leaf-saga/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exclusive: New episode of MapleStory's New Leaf Saga</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/02/exclusive-new-episode-of-maplestorys-new-leaf-saga/">Exclusive: New episode of MapleStory's New Leaf Saga</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 May 2011 22:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/index.html">Runes of Magic's</a></em> second anniversary is not far off now. In the nearly two solid years since the official launch, a thriving gaming community has been cultivated. Within this active community are some talented players who weren't satisfied with just <em>playing</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/runes-of-magic/"><em>RoM</em></a>. For whatever reasons, these players ventured outside the digital confines of the game to share their talents and their adventures through the land of Taborea.<br />
<br />
I wanted to highlight a handful of members of this talented community that has evolved around <em>RoM</em>. Some have made outstanding guides, while others have made useful websites or fun blogs. There's a lot of great talent on the official forum and within the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/12/lost-pages-of-taborea-runes-of-magic-addons/">addon community</a>, to be sure, but I tried to focus on examples of great forum guides and others who have stepped further away to do their own thing. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> is a game known for producing some fantastic screenshots and video footage. Fan-made videos like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/eve-video-corner-future-proof/">Kale Ryoko's Future Proof</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/fan-made-eve-video-day-of-darkness-ii-blows-away-players-and-de/">Dire Lauthris's Day of Darkness II</a> have proven incredibly popular even among people who don't play <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE</em></a>. Among the impressive cinematic trailers and PvP videos, one film has always stood out as undeniably <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/eve-evolved-the-top-ten-eve-videos-of-all-time/">the best <em>EVE</em> video ever made</a>. Created partly in <em>EVE Online</em> itself and partly in <em>HalfLife 2</em>'s Source engine, Clear Skies follows the adventures of John Rourke and his disheveled crew of a Minmatar battleship that always seems to find itself in trouble.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">first part of the Clear Skies</a> series won <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">first place at Machinima Filmfest 2008</a>, confirming that it wasn't just a hit with <em>EVE</em>'s playerbase. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/clear-skies-2-has-been-released/">second installment</a> of this popular machinima was as big a hit as the first, securing a cult following of fans demanding a third part to John Rourke's epic space saga. Creator <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">Ian Chrisholm</a> said that he was taking a break from video-making for a while and might then move on to other projects rather than making a third installment in the series. Fans of the series will be glad to know that not only is Clear Skies III definitely being made, but it's <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=1453255">also only a few months away</a> from completion. Ian released a trailer for the upcoming video to excited fans earlier this week, stating that the film will be released in three or four months<br />

Well, a joint-project of <a href="http://we-learn.com.au/">Rhys Moult</a> with Curtin University and the Tabor Adelaide iYouth Project has produced a video which essentially summarizes the 7,500 word <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> <a href="http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php" target="_blank">Terms of Service</a> in a straightforward and easy-to-digest form. Although it's not a gaming podcast, their latest episode (#176) is all about <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a>. The GWC hosts are apparently really into playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE</em></a> and they talk about the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">setting of New Eden</a> in the context of David Weber's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorverse">Honorverse</a> series of military sci-fi novels, drawing parallels between the two in terms of strategy and technology. They also discuss the things they've seen and done in their time in the game, from their first steps into (and fleeing from) PvP to a run-in with a virtual prostitute. (You're free to do many things in <em>EVE</em>'s sandbox... but <em>that</em> is probably not one of them.) <br /><br />The hosts are given a hand in relating what they've gotten from the game experience in <em>EVE Online</em> by two notable players. Ian Chisholm, the creator of the award-winning <a href="http://www.clearskiesthemovie.com">Clear Skies machinima</a> and its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/clear-skies-2-has-been-released/">excellent follow-up</a>, explains how he tells his own stories in the game visually. He also discusses what drives him to invest so much of his time and effort into the projects, and the technical challenges in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">making Clear Skies a reality</a>. A fantastic interview.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/gwc-podcast-interviews-eve-onlines-first-lady-of-piracy-and-cle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GWC podcast interviews EVE Online's first lady of piracy and Clear Skies film maker</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/gwc-podcast-interviews-eve-onlines-first-lady-of-piracy-and-cle/">GWC podcast interviews EVE Online's first lady of piracy and Clear Skies film maker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST. For those of us <a href="http://www.eve-online.com"><em>EVE Online</em></a> players - or just fans of great machinima - who have been patiently waiting for <a href="http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/JohnRourke/Clear_Skies2.wmv"><em>Clear Skies 2</em></a>, the wait is over! Ian Chisholm and his crew have managed to crank out <em>Clear Skies 2</em> in amazing time, offering up yet another <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">exciting adventure</a> in the dangerous space of New Eden. As with everything awesome that we want <em>omg right now</em> - the load <a href="http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/JohnRourke/Clear_Skies2.wmv">on EVE Files</a> is insanely high right now. May want to consider <a href="http://eve-files.com/media/torrent/Clear_Skies2.wmv-%5Beebe%5D.torrent">using the torrent</a> for the moment, if you can. <br /><br />In the meantime, while you're waiting for the download, may we suggest you check out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/29/full-trailer-released-for-eve-online-machinima-clear-skies-2/">the trailer for Clear Skies 2</a>, or perhaps our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">exclusive interview and behind-the-scenes look</a> at the making with the creator! We've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/04/massively-interviews-e-on-editor-zapatero/">spoken with E-ON in the past</a> and a few of us on the Massively staff are regular readers -- our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/brendan-drain"><em>EVE</em> columnist Brendan Drain</a> has been an E-ON contributor himself. The <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/eon">Spring issue of E-ON is now shipping</a> and although it doesn't have the instant gratification of clicking on a hyperlink, there's some excellent content there that we really want to mention to our readers and in general point out that E-ON has a lot to offer <em>EVE Online</em> players.<br /><br />This issue's cover story is "<em>The End of New Eden</em>" by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jim-rossignol">Jim Rossignol</a> and is an inquiry into the dreaded question of when the game will finally run out of steam. Sad as it is, all MMOs end eventually. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/eve-evolved-why-eve-online-will-be-around-for-a-long-time/">Or do they have to?</a><br /><br />The E-ON cover story looks at how different <em>EVE</em> is from the other MMOs running. Since <em>EVE</em> is really all about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">what happens in New Eden</a>, an open sprawling galaxy where players do what they choose, the game isn't necessarily tied into expansion zones, new classes, certain quests or raid bosses. In other words, <em>EVE</em> doesn't suffer from the pitfall many MMOs do in that players quickly progress through the new content and then have nowhere else to go. <em>EVE</em> is unique in that it's a setting -- sometimes a harsh setting -- where PvP and PvE exist side-by-side and players determine their own path. Perhaps it's that freedom that's been a draw for many players so far and "<em>The End of New Eden</em>" looks at the prospects for this attraction continuing in future years. As there will be no <em>EVE Online</em> 2, it's all about one continually evolving setting and the possibilities this brings, and Rossignol's article is well worth a read.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/13/eve-onlines-official-magazine-e-on-releases-latest-quarterly-is/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online's official magazine E-ON releases latest quarterly issue</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/13/eve-onlines-official-magazine-e-on-releases-latest-quarterly-is/">EVE Online's official magazine E-ON releases latest quarterly issue</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 17:00:00 EST. Fans of television shows like Battlestar Galactica know very well that a story of humanity's struggle for survival has a particularly strong emotional pull. The creators of <a href="http://www.eveonline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> recognized this long ago, creating an extensive body of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/eve-visual-guide-the-birth-of-new-eden/">lore about the races of New Eden</a> and their clashes with one another on a galactic scale. Their long history of conflicts creates endless ripples of discord felt by later generations, resulting in the subjugation of entire races countered by the will to be free of such tyranny. <br /><br />The struggle to survive in the face of a great threat is central to the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">EVE Online</span></a> machinima "Day of Darkness II", which is nothing short of exceptional. It's a short film created in-game by <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span> player Dire Lauthris and a retelling of a key bit of <span style="font-style: italic;">EVE</span>'s lore. In fact, Lauthris drew upon one of the actual Chronicles called "<a href="http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=aug01">The Breakout</a>". Day of Darkness II focuses on the strife between the Caldari and Gallente races of New Eden, turning back the clock to a historic battle 200 years ago between the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/the-birth-of-new-eden/1006573/">Caldari State</a> and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/gallery/the-birth-of-new-eden/1006574">Gallente Federation</a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/fan-made-eve-video-day-of-darkness-ii-blows-away-players-and-de/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fan made EVE video Day of Darkness II blows away players and devs alike</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/fan-made-eve-video-day-of-darkness-ii-blows-away-players-and-de/">Fan made EVE video Day of Darkness II blows away players and devs alike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 13:00:00 EST. Yesterday we were treated to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/msnbc-live-from-middle-earth/">an interview on MSNBC</a> that was held within <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>. Aside from the fact that it's refreshing to see news coverage where games aren't being blamed for the world's ills, it was interesting to see them using game footage in this fashion. That said, people have been doing interviews in virtual worlds like <a href="http://www.secondlife.com"><em>Second Life</em></a> for quite some time, and using machinima for everything from PR to corporate training. Still, we wondered - is this something you'd like to see more often on mainstream TV - machinimated interviews from different MMOs? Would you, for example, tune in to watch an interview with Vin Diesel if he were on his (rumored) Resto Shaman in <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>? Would you be more or less likely to watch interviews with game developers or PR people if they were held in their respective games? Or is that a bit too geeky for you, and you'd prefer to stick with in-person interviews?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/26/the-daily-grind-machinima-news-interviews/">The Daily Grind: Machinima news interviews?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 08:00:00 EST. Usually when a major news outlet picks up a story about a video game, it's in relation to how <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-541588/Parents-shouldnt-let-children-play-video-games-bedroom.html">destructive they are</a>, or how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/keighley-takes-on-fox-news-sexbox-sexpose/">unmoral they are</a>, or it will just be a really dry interview with a game designer that everyone's going to forget about in two hours. So when we got word that <a href="http://www.msnbc.com">MSNBC</a> was interested in the <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, we weren't expecting this oddly amusing interview.<br /><br />Todd Kenreck, roving reporter and elven guardian, has taken it upon himself to brave the locales of Middle-Earth and catch up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a>'s live producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/lotrocast-developer-interview-wt/">Aaron Campbell</a>. He braves the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misty_Mountains">Misty Mountains</a>, travels through <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bree_(Middle-earth)">Bree-Land</a>, and gets all of the information from Aaron as the two chat in the scenic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivendell">Rivendell</a>. The entire interview is done inside of the game in a machinima style, and makes a pretty nice visual case for playing <em>LotRO</em>.<br /><br />We've embedded the full video after the break, so everyone can enjoy some solid reporting from the lands of Middle-Earth.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/msnbc-live-from-middle-earth/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MSNBC: Live from Middle-Earth</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/msnbc-live-from-middle-earth/">MSNBC: Live from Middle-Earth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 25 Mar 2009 12:00:00 EST. Ah, the memories. With 10 years under its belt, <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> has introduced us to strange and wonderful lands. Anyone who has played the game can tell you about some of the many zones they've visited; tramping across the wide expanse of Butcherblock; spending tons of time in Paludal, Lake of Ill Omen, Highkeep, or so many other areas; getting chased out of Oasis by Spectres or Sand Giants (hell, getting chased out of just about any zone with giants in it unless you were adept at kiting); running from guards if you happened to stumble into a town that wasn't friendly to you. From one moment to the next, one group to the next, you never really knew what the day would hold. <br /><br />This video, created by the team at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a>, is not only a nod to those fun "<a href="http://wherethehellismatt.com/dancing2005.html?height=360&amp;width=430">Where the hell is Matt</a>" videos, but also a really nice trip down memory lane for those of us who have played - or still play - <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EverQuest/">EverQuest</a></em>. Added to the mix of various areas are tidbits of <em>EverQuest</em> trivia. One such little morsel is that Qeynos is actually <em>Sony EQ</em> spelled backwards, if you hadn't caught that. So, if you've ever spent time in Norrath, be sure to check out their 10-year tribute video - and the related trivia - after the break!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/dancing-around-the-everquest-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dancing around the EverQuest world</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/dancing-around-the-everquest-world/">Dancing around the EverQuest world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. But it's not everyday that a short film as good as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">Clear Skies</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-online-films-nominated-for-machinima-filmfest-2008-awards/">Havoc</a> comes along. Then again, it's also not every day that something created by a player draws accolades from the game's creators -- but that's exactly the case with the work of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online "><em>EVE</em></a> player Kyoko Sakoda, in "<a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=974250 ">War Has Come</a>" -- which beautifully captures the game, set to a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower."<br /> <br />Sakoda writes, <em>"This is one of my first thematic works. I know the Bear McCreary version of the song may sound like it is out of place for a few hardcore sci-fi fans, but I could not justify using any other cover. Enjoy, and write feedback if you wish. I'm always looking to improve my storytelling, direction, and editing and compositing skills." </em><br /><br />We've got "War Has Come" embedded for you below the cut, and it's well worth a look. We just wish Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" was a longer song...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/stunning-eve-machinima-depicts-struggle-between-new-edens-facti/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stunning EVE machinima depicts struggle between New Eden's factions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/stunning-eve-machinima-depicts-struggle-between-new-edens-facti/">Stunning EVE machinima depicts struggle between New Eden's factions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 10:00:00 EST. IGN has put together a top ten <a href="http://vault.ign.com/View.php?view=editorials.detail&amp;id=164">2008 machinima movie list</a> that's most definitely great for killing some time, should you have any in need of slaying. The list is surprisingly diverse, with movies created in <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.ageofconan.com">Age of Conan</a>, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.coh.com">City of Heroes</a>, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.burningsea.com">Pirates of the Burning Sea</a>, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.guildwars.com">Guild Wars</a> and of course <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a>.<br /><br />We're not too <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/cinemassively-epic-raids/">surprised to see an Oxhorn</a> Christmas Tree <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/cinemassively-snackys-journal-episode-1/">and a Snacky's Journal</a> 4 take the top two slots, as both series are always incredibly worth-while -- Snacky's Journal 4 won the <span>2008 Blizzcon Movie Contest.</span> Although we highly recommend checking out The Return of The Revenge of Dr. Mechanico, as it's an amazingly wonderful use of City of Heroes as a storytelling device. Also, if you've really got some time to pass, take a look at Election Duel if you're in any way a politically-minded type with a sense of humor. Good stuff!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/03/ten-2008-machinima-worth-checking-out/">Ten 2008 machinima worth checking out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 03 Jan 2009 16:00:00 EST. It seems like no matter what game you play, there's probably machinima for it out there. One can find funny videos about <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grXeU-SAxBw">characters trying not to get deleted</a>; short horror films that <a href="http://www.machinima.com/film/view&amp;id=30858">creep you out</a>; well-known <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcWXL8jpFGs">dance extravaganzas</a> that kind of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z0pD5NNxew">stretch what's actually in your game</a>; and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">full-length movies</a> that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsgOfn5gVB4">combine games to achieve their effect</a>. Machinima artists offer us a great deal of freely available entertainment. As we're always on the lookout for something fun to watch during lunch around the virtual Massively offices, this morning we thought we'd ask what some of your favorite MMO machinima are? What makes a good MMO machinima to you? Is it technical ability, story-line, or are you fond of catchy songs that combine great games as we have in the above example from Baron Soosdon?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/the-daily-grind-your-favorite-mmo-machinima/">The Daily Grind: Your favorite MMO machinima?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. My understanding is the overriding vision for Clear Skies is yours, that you write the scripts and do much of the work involved with turning them into proper films, but how do you collaborate with others in creating Clear Skies?</span><br /><br />Pretty much I did everything bar the voice acting in the first film, and even then a lot of that. I didn't bring anyone else into it as I didn't want to use up a lot of someone else's time and then have the project fail for some reason. Also I'm a bit of a control freak, relying on other people is difficult for me! I've found this time around that there isn't much I can farm out anyway, it's a bunch of esoteric skills that I've now got refined to the point that it's faster for me to do things than it is to teach others -- I attempted to teach lipsyncing to someone else but I may have well tried teaching them Martian. What I have got is a good friend working on reskinning some models, and a chap I spoke to ingame that has been working on level designs for various games for years. He's doing me some new sets for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gallente">Gallente</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/amarr">Amarr</a> ships, ensuring they will have a different visual style to my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/caldari">Caldari</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/minmatar">Minmatar</a> ones. He's really good, enthusiastic, and importantly has got a good history in sticking with a project to the end.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm-page-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm Page 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm-page-2/">Massively interviews Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm Page 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. Fans and critics alike <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">have praised Clear Skies</a> since its release. Indeed, the film recently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">took top honors at Machinima Filmfest 2008</a>, garnering a Mackie award for Best Long Format Film. <br /><br />This success at the festival was met with astonishment from Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm as well as from his collaborators, John Guthrie and Richie Powles. But it was decidedly less of a surprise to the many fans of the film, a seemingly ever-growing number judging by the number of times Clear Skies has been <a href="http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/JohnRourke/Clear_Skies.wmv">downloaded from EVE-Files</a>. <br /><br />Massively recently caught up with Clear Skies creator <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ian-chisholm">Ian Chisholm</a>, who was gracious enough to provide us with a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/1144196/">sequence of production stills</a> from Clear Skies 2, explaining how he brings a scene to life in stages from voice recording, to choreography, to the culmination of this work in the final footage. While we had his attention, Ian also discussed what drives a man to dedicate years of his life to a project of this caliber, and what he has in store for us with Clear Skies 2.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/">Behind the scenes of Clear Skies 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144196"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/1-act2scene5-raw-voice-rec_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Raw voice recording" title="Raw voice recording" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144197"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/2-act2scene5-lipsynching_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Lipsyncing" title="Lipsyncing" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144198"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/3-act2scene5-pt04-choreo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Choreography" title="Choreography" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144199"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/4-act2scene5-pt04-set_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Hammer map editor" title="Hammer map editor" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/behind-the-scenes-of-clear-skies-2/#1144200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/11/5-act2scene5-pt04-still_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Shot from final footage" title="Shot from final footage" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively interviews Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/massively-interviews-clear-skies-creator-ian-chisholm/">Massively interviews Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. Machinima and MMOs just seem to go hand-in-hand so well. What's more fun than letting your guildmate friends be dancers in your latest music video spoof, or thespians in the latest episode of your dramatic series based on their <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">World of Warcraft</span></a> characters. It's for this reason that machinima has gained so much popularity in recent years. It's a way for everyday people to expand upon their fantasy lifestyle in an MMO and bring it out in the form of artistic expression. <br /><br />So it should be no surprise that a website like <a href="http://www.machinima.com">Machinima.com</a> would be so popular and successful. Recently they've upped the ante a bit <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/machinimacom-gets-385-million-in-funding/?biz=1">in the form of $3.85 million in funding</a> from MK Capital and other private investors. This money will be used to expand Machinima.com's business plans, allowing them to appoint five entertainment industry leaders to its Board of Directors. <br /><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/machinima-com-gets-3-85-million-in-funding-for-business-expansi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Machinima.com gets $3.85 million in funding for business expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/08/machinima-com-gets-3-85-million-in-funding-for-business-expansi/">Machinima.com gets $3.85 million in funding for business expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. We recently mentioned that Clear Skies had been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-online-films-nominated-for-machinima-filmfest-2008-awards/">nominated for consideration</a> at the Machinima Filmfest 2008, but have gotten word that it won a <a href="http://festival.machinima.org/wordpress/?p=102 ">Mackie award for Best Long Format film</a> this past weekend. <br /><br />Massively got a hold of Clear Skies creator Ian Chisholm today, who shared with us his reaction to having won the Mackie award. He quipped, <em>"I was sort of wondering if they had made a mistake -- it's really nice to get that sort of recognition when all I set out to do was have some fun with my friends and have a creative outlet."</em> But more than anything, Chisholm is pleased with the overwhelmingly <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=783871&amp;page=1">positive response he's gotten from the <em>EVE</em> community</a> itself. <em>"I never set out to do any of this, so it's completely organic... it's just a fantastic thing to be able to do, to reach out and make all these thousands of people's day go with a bit of a smile when they watch the film" </em>he said.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online film 'Clear Skies' wins at Machinima Filmfest 2008</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/eve-online-film-clear-skies-wins-at-machinima-filmfest-2008/">EVE Online film 'Clear Skies' wins at Machinima Filmfest 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 19:00:00 EST. The Machinima Festival is one of the <a href="http://festival.machinima.org/wordpress/?page_id=2">major machinima events held annually.</a> The full day event will take place on November 1st in New York City. <br /><br />Clear Skies is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/eve-online-meets-half-life-2-in-machinima-masterpiece/">an imaginative blend</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online's</em></a> galactic backdrop with <em>Half-Life 2</em> character models, and is a Best Long Format nominee. Much of the film takes place within ship and station interiors, and represents two years of hard work by its creator, Ian Chisholm, as well as Richie Powles and John Guthrie. Clear Skies has been well-received by the <em>EVE</em> Community, with <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=783871 ">the announcement thread</a> garnering 50 pages of praise and climbing.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.project-monster.com/">Havoc</a> is a newer machinima, nominated for Best Sound Design, Best Short Format, and Best Voice Acting. Havoc was created by <a href="http://www.anilkamath.com/">Anil Kamath</a> (Sound Design and Music), Chris Newcombe (Visual Design and Editing), and voiced by Sarah Murray. Like Clear Skies, <a href="http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&amp;threadID=874512">Havoc is proving to be quite popular </a>with the <em>EVE</em> playerbase, but holds appeal for a more general audience as well. The film is short, clocking in at one minute in length, but in that time nicely juxtaposes the grit of New Eden's setting with gorgeous visuals filmed within <em>EVE.</em> Like Clear Skies, Havoc is well worth a look. Video embeds of both machinima are found below the cut:<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-online-films-nominated-for-machinima-filmfest-2008-awards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Online films nominated for Machinima Filmfest 2008 awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/eve-online-films-nominated-for-machinima-filmfest-2008-awards/">EVE Online films nominated for Machinima Filmfest 2008 awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Oct 2008 15:00:00 EST. <p>Linden Lab is putting together (but has not yet formally announced) a <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> promotional video to be shown at this year's <a href="http://www.slconvention.org/">Second Life Community Convention</a> (SLCC08) in Tampa Florida, 5-7 September. Linden Lab is looking for up to ten images, and up to 250 words on the topic, with permission for use assigned to Linden Lab and SLCC.</p>
<p>Linden Lab hasn't announced this yet, but we've been watching the development of the announcement on the <a href="http://wiki.secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em> wiki</a> for the last couple of days now. We're guessing that the actual proper announcement still has to be crawled over by the PR people with microscopes before they dare show it on the official blog -- but we've got the real meat of it here.</p>

Created by <a href="http://www.warcraftmovies.com/pv.php?l=Surgee">Surgee</a>, for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/worldwide-invitational">Worldwide Invitational</a> <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/05/14/wwi08-machinima-contest/">machinima contest</a>, he painstakingly rendered it on his old machine. <br /><br />Surgee silently vowed to himself that he would quit making machinima if he didn't win the top prize of a new computer. It was getting to be too difficult and time-consuming on his old one. Alas, the grand prize went to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/olibith">Olibith</a>, for a <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/07/12/wow-moviewatch-the-bountiful-chest/">movie about a woman's chest</a>. Between <em><a href="http://concertogate.gamescampus.com/">Concerto Gate</a></em> and <em><a href="http://atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/default.asp">Atlantica</a></em>, we may just have to start using a new acronym: MMOTBS or massively multiplayer turn-based strategy game. Don't get us wrong though, the thought of more turn-based MMOs <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/atlantica-continues-to-bring-beauty/">makes us all tingly inside</a>. In fact, we're very happy to see MMOs that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/01/atlantica-updates-with-new-gameplay-video/">dabble in the world of turn-based</a> battles and it really is underutilized mechanic these days. Obviously because of our love for them you can count on us to report on anything related to these types of games, like <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36206.html">this brand new trailer</a> for Atlantica!<br /><br />We get to see lots of turns being taken in this trailer, which truly warms our heart. However, we also see plenty of epic battles being waged. It all looks so grandiose and dramatic. In fact, we're not really sure if we've seen a game trailer with that many quick-cuts in it before. It may not be as good cinematically as say, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/cinemassively-an-oxhorn-brand-medley/">an Oxhorn Brand Melody</a>, but it certainly could be a lot worse: It could be set to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZj24cRdHDk&amp;feature=related">some overused movie theme</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/new-atlantica-trailer-shows-off-turn-based-battles/">New Atlantica trailer shows off turn-based battles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 20:30:00 EST.
