<em>Welcome to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, our weekly roundup of the top news from popular multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) and other multiplayer online games that aren't quite MMOs. Published every Monday, the column covers games such a</em><em>s </em><a href="http://www.leagueoflegends.com/">League of Legends</a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/">Heroes of Newerth</a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.riseofimmortals.com/">Rise of Immortals</a><em>, </em><a href="http://www.bloodlinechampions.com/">Bloodline Champions</a><em> and more.</em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/18/not-so-massively-diabetic-champions-edition/">Last week we got a first look at</a> <em>League of Legends</em>' upcoming champion Wukong the Monkey King and heard two awesome <em>LoL</em> parody songs. We also brought you the news that the price of <em>Heroes of Newerth</em> had dropped to $10, a deal that is currently still active and has no closing date. We got to grips with <em>Realm of the Titans</em>' new Titan's Eye map, <em>HoN</em>'s latest hero Revenant, and a new tournament structure with prizes for <em>Bloodline Champions</em>. We also briefly introduced <em>World of Battles: Morningstar</em>, a fresh mix of MOBA and RTS gameplay where large armies clash on the battlefield.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/not-so-massively/">Not So Massively</a>, we reveal the closed beta date for <em>Realm of the Titans</em> and introduce the incredibly unlikely online game <em>Family Guy Online</em>. We also hear more from the <em>Rise of Immortals</em> team about the game's ongoing open beta, and I give my first impressions of the <em>World of Battles: Morningstar</em> open beta. This week seems to be an accidental Monkey King special, as both <em>League of Legends</em> and <em>Heroes of Newerth</em> reveal gameplay details of their surprisingly similar upcoming Monkey King characters. <em>League of Legends</em> also launched a new contest this week, offering players the chance to win prizes by writing and performing their own <em>LoL</em> theme songs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/not-so-massively-how-many-monkey-kings-do-we-really-need/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: How many Monkey Kings do we really need?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/25/not-so-massively-how-many-monkey-kings-do-we-really-need/">Not So Massively: How many Monkey Kings do we really need?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmo-family/">MMO Family</a> is your resource for leveling a gaming-specced family ... From tips on balancing gaming with family life to finding age-appropriate niches for every family member, MMO Family offers you advice on MMO gaming of the family, by the family and for the family.</em><br />
<br />
Next in our look at kids' MMOs is <em>Ether Saga Online</em>, winner of a <a href="http://shop.parenthood.com/shoppers-showcase/Ether_Saga_Online.html">2009 National Parenting Publications Award</a> for tweens and teens video games. Compared with the freewheeling, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/15/mmo-family-a-parents-look-at-free-realms/">open-ended approach of <em>Free Realms</em></a>, <em>ESO</em> presents a more traditional MMO face. Even so, you probably weren't expecting a work of classic literature -- but that's in fact what you'll get. <em>ESO</em>, which was first developed for Chinese players, is based on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West"><em>Journey to the West</em></a> (often known in the West as <em>Monkey</em>), considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. All that, and it's free to play, too.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/mmo-family-a-parents-look-at-ether-saga-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMO Family: A parent's look at Ether Saga Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/mmo-family-a-parents-look-at-ether-saga-online/">MMO Family: A parent's look at Ether Saga Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 19:00:00 EST. It goes without saying that American companies would do well to do some research into the Asian markets to see what it is that they're doing over there to be so successful; it can't be a coincidence that 2 of the 3 top-played MMOs are Asian.<br /><br />Having said that, what, exactly is the appeal? Are these other two games simply the best of the breed, as <em>WoW </em>seems to be (die-hard <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EQ</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online"><em>EVE Online</em></a> fans can climb off your soapboxes right now; I'm just going by statistics here)? Are there congruences between the three? Similarities in gameplay? If either of the other two were to come over to these shores, would <em>WoW</em> suddenly find some serious competition? Have any of you played these games, O Faithful Readers? Leave a comment!<br /><br />[Via the <a href="http://star-techcentral.com">Star Online</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/zhengtu-online-holds-1-million-concurrent-users/">Zhengtu Online holds 1 million concurrent users</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 07:30:00 EST.
