In an effort to deliver more frequent updates, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> has stated that it's willing to redefine the traditional mega-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> patch to include smaller updates. "We're going to change what it means to be a <em>WoW </em>patch," said Production Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/j-allen-brack">J. Allen Brack</a>. "We just had to make a decision about how we're going to do these updates that are quicker."<br />
<br />
Brack <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/10/16/wows-j-allen-brack-on-what-lies-beyond-pandaria/">spoke with Rock, Paper, Shotgun</a> about the upcoming smaller <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mists-of-pandaria"><em>Mists of Pandaria</em></a> 5.1 patch as well as <em>World of Warcraft's </em>future. He said that the <em>WoW </em>team is "larger than it's ever been," with 165 people working on the project.<br />
<br />
Other topics raised by the interview included free-to-play and revamps to older content. Brack said that the team has thought about both, and he made the interesting admission that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-burning-crusade"><em>The Burning Crusade</em></a> has aged poorly in comparison to the rest of the game. "There was a while where <em>Burning Crusade</em> was the best thing we'd ever done," he said. "Now it's the worst thing we've ever done, because everything else has raised the level with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cataclysm"><em>Cataclysm</em></a>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/17/blizzard-patch-5-1-is-going-to-change-what-it-means-to-be-a-wo/">Blizzard: Patch 5.1 is 'going to change what it means to be a World of Warcraft patch'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Morgan-Webb/">Morgan Webb</a> dethrones Casey this week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Report/">The MMO Report</a>, having made the journey to Anaheim to interview <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard's</a> reps about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft's</a></em> upcoming <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mists-of-Pandaria/">Mists of Pandaria</a></em> expansion. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/J-Allen-Brack/">J. Allen Brack</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Tom-Chilton/">Tom Chilton</a> focus on the philosophy of this expansion and its shift from previous expansions' ominous tone to a more playful theme of adventure, exploration, and oh yeah, the war between the Alliance and the Horde.<br />
<br />
The pair also highlight changes to underdeveloped zones, pet battles, repurposed classic dungeons, phased farms (actual farms!), and solutions to the faction grind problem. Most interestingly, they tell Morgan that Pandaren came first... and the Asian motif followed. After all, they joke, it just wouldn't have made sense to put Pandaren in Aztec ruins.<br />
<br />

"Ah crap, it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzcon-2011">BlizzCon</a> again?" asks <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Casey-Schreiner/">Casey Schreiner</a> in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-MMO-Report/">MMO Report</a>. 'Fraid so! At the Anaheim con, Casey interviewed <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft</a></em> Lead Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/J-Allen-Brack/">J. Allen Brack</a> about the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mists-of-Pandaria/">Mists of Pandaria</a></em> expansion, covering the neutral Pandaren race, the Monk class, the talent system overhaul, pet combat, world bosses, battlegrounds, challenge mode, retro dungeons, and beer.<br />
<br />
He also found time to chat with a few fans, cut in line, sniff markers, wade into a loot elemental money machine, polish off some voiceovers for Jaina and Thrall, and play with <em>WoW</em>-themed LEGOs. I mean, MEGA Bloks.<br />
<br />
Casey's takeaway? "We all learned something very valuable here: that internet rumors can sometimes be true. So thanks for ruining Christmas, The Internet!"<br />
<br />
Enjoy the MMO Report just past the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/mmo-report-ah-crap-its-blizzcon-again-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMO Report: Ah crap it's BlizzCon again edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/mmo-report-ah-crap-its-blizzcon-again-edition/">MMO Report: Ah crap it's BlizzCon again edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 20:30:00 EST. To many veteran MMO players, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKj36GJj_i8">the opening horns of <em>EverQuest's</em> score</a> are enough to trigger vivid memories, violent hallucinations, and an unstoppable desire to leap through the computer screen to return to Norrath. It all depends, of course, on which MMO you first cut your teeth, and while many gamers would claim titles like <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> as their first, there is a large contingent who will confess that <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/"><em>EQ</em></a> was their first MMO lover.<br />
<br />
In fact, before <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a> came on the scene in 2004, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> was the gold standard of MMOs for a half-decade -- it was insanely popular, perfectly addictive, and absolutely revolutionary. It was a giant that roamed the virtual lands of those days, a giant that continues to forge new grounds well over a decade from its inception.<br />
<br />
It was 1995 when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley/">John Smedley</a> realized the potential for online gaming and roped in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brad-mcquaid/">Brad McQuaid</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/steve-clover">Steve Clover</a> to start putting together an online RPG for <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/soe">SOE</a>. What began as a small project ballooned into a crazy endeavor as the growing team created a monster RPG the likes the world had never seen before -- a game that would forever shape the MMO genre.<br />
<br />
This month, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">Game Archaeologist</a> is going after one of the biggest treasures of recorded history as we unearth the secrets to <em>EverQuest's </em>popularity, legacy, and longevity. The first step on our journey is to look at some of the highlights that made <em>EQ </em>what it is today.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-neverending-quest-the-highlights/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the NeverEnding Quest: The highlights</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-neverending-quest-the-highlights/">The Game Archaeologist and the NeverEnding Quest: The highlights</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 13:00:00 EST. It's a Whole New World", the keynote -- which takes place on Wednesday 16 September -- is an obvious allusion to SOE's very own <a href="http://freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a>, which has been one of the most hyped freemium PC MMOs of the year and will eventually see a PS3 release. <br /><br />The keynote page goes a little more in-depth, informing attendees that they <em>"will learn about the challenges and lessons learned when creating a full-blown MMO for kids together with a ground-breaking new business model; and how developers can re-educate their teams to move from stagnant and dated MMO design toward mass market success." <br /></em><br /><a href="http://massively.com/tag/gdc-austin">GDC Austin</a>, which is taking place between 15th and 18th September in Austin, Texas, will also see a keynote, taking place the following day from <a href="http://massively.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> devs Frank Pearce and J. Allen Brack entitled "The Universe of the <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>".<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2009/08/gdc_austin_adds_smedley_keynot.php">GameSetWatch</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/07/gdc-austin-keynote-speaker-announced-as-soes-john-smedley/">GDC Austin keynote speaker announced as SOE's John Smedley</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Aug 2009 14:30:00 EST. Allen Brack</a> doing a wrap-up of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> expansion. They talk about a wide range of topics in the context of <em>Wrath</em>, but one thing that stands out is Brack's mention of hero classes, and the difficulty in narrowing down to one hero class for release from a pool of <em>29 hero classes</em> that were complete. <br /><br />Kaplan added, <em>"I think the class choice was super hard and eventually we had it down to three front runners which was pretty cool. We were talking for awhile about a Necromancer. He would be kind of a range caster, do a lot of corpse explode, that sort of thing. Things we ended up incorporating into the Death Knight. We also had a cool idea for a Rune Master. That was going to be more of a melee type. Think Rogue or Monk-type character, but Death Knight ultimately fit." </em><br /><br />Check out <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/blizzcast/archive/episode7.xml">BlizzCast Episode 7</a> for more about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> from the game's creators themselves, as well as some hints about massive raid zones on the way and discussion of the game's lore.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/wow-other-hero-classes-were-considered">[Via Eurogamer]</a><hr />

<div align="left">When curious <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> players investigated currently-unused images hidden in a build of the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> expansion, they <a href="http://www.worldofraids.com/news/309.html">uncovered</a> a button labeled "UI-PaidCharacterCustomization" which was associated with the character selection screen. Needless to say, that discovery raised some eyebrows. At <a href="http://www.blizzard.com/blizzcon/?rhtml=y">Blizzcon</a>, Lead Producer J. Allen Brack was asked to clarify.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://www.warcry.com/articles/view/conferences/blizzcon_08/5358-Blizzcon-08-WoW-D3-Press-Conference">WarCry's write-up for the event</a>, Brack first dodged the question, but eventually decided it was necessary to address it. He confirmed that a paid character customization service is in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>'s future, but said that the developers haven't decided what it will entail or how much it will cost yet.<br /><br />Perhaps players will pay to make changes not supported by the barbershop, or perhaps all-new premium customization options will be introduced. If it's the former, then <em>WoW</em> is not headed towards a more <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/microtransactions">microtransaction</a> based future, as that sort of option is similar to the already-existing service that allows players to pay for a name change. If unique premium options are being introduced though, that's a whole different ball game.<br /></div>

Allen Brack for clarification. Brack <a href="http://www.worldofwar.net/n/416617/exclusive-j-allen-brack-on-wow-graphics-upgrade">responded</a> by describing specific changes to the engine that will be in the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> expansion, and then by making a pretty major revelation about the nature of the overhaul.<br /><br />According to Brack, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> will be making the changes bit-by-bit rather than all at once. "We're taking an iterative, organic approach to graphics upgrades," he said, "going feature by feature as opposed to thinking in terms of an overall new graphics engine."<br /><br />As for the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>WotLK</em></a> changes: those will include a new shadow engine, some new shaders for "even better looking terrain, as well as cool ice effects," and an increased view distance to make those expansive Northrend wastelands look, well ... expansive. He also noted that new water effects will be coming in "a future content update or expansion."<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/08/25/brack-clarifies-graphical-update-plans/">WoW Insider</a>]</div>

Co-lead designer Tom Chilton and producer J. Allen Brack spoke with Oli Welsh from Eurogamer at the Games Convention in Leipzig, about where the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> title is now, and where it's heading. <br /><br />The interview touched on how <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> will handle instances in <em>the Death Knight starting zone</em> in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>Wrath of the Lich King,</em></a> with Brack stating that instances won't actually be used. Rather, a player's environment will shift between different world states dependent upon quest progression. Other highlights of their talk include the design aspects of the hero class, faster leveling, and whether new players can really have the same experience that drew so many gamers to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> years ago. In a <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=190535">recent interview</a> over at <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com">CVG</a>, <a href="http://www.blizzard.com">Blizzard</a>'s senior producer on the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> project, J. Allen Brack, talks a bit about how the newest <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> expansion will be better than anything we've seen yet. He says that 95% of the team that worked on <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/"><em>Burning Crusade</em></a> have remained and are working on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king">WotLK</a></em>. This is an important distinction, as it means the team is happy. As Brack says, "It's a testament to Blizzard culture, the success of the game and the environment we've created."<br /><br />This interview also touches on the state of PvP in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft">WoW</a></em>. The CVG interviewer makes some humorous remarks on the changes that have been made to PvP since it was first introduced, and asks if this trend will continue into <em>WotLK</em>. Brack believes that with the expansion's new <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/9785">Lake Wintergrasp</a> area, players will enjoy the siege weapons and destructible environments it will introduce. Let's hope he's right!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/keeping-the-blizzard-team-happy/">Keeping the Blizzard team happy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 16:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> producer J. Allen Brack and designers Jeff Kaplan and Tom Chilton were <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=140861">interviewed by Eurogamer</a> today. Most of the interview dealt with <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/"><em>Wrath of the Lich King</em></a> content like the Death Knight, 10-person raids, and world PvP objectives. The most interesting bits of the interview were on the <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=140861&amp;page=3">last page,</a> though; the Blizzard reps talked about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>WoW</em></a>'s future.<br /><br />According to Kaplan, a major graphics engine overhaul is "probably" part of that future. While he himself is not convinced it's necessary (he cited players' lukewarm reception of similar moves by the developers of <a href="http://www.uoherald.com/news/"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> and <a href="http://everquest.station.sony.com/"><em>EverQuest</em>)</a>, he said: "That's actually something we talk about every expansion ... and I'm positive we'll talk about it next expansion."<br /><br />In the meantime, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king"><em>WotLK</em></a> will allow "people with high-end machines some additional graphical effects." <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/05/16/overhauling-the-engine/"><em>WoW Insider</em> joked</a> that future graphics engine updates might be dedicated entirely to producing even larger, more detailed shoulder pad armor. We wouldn't be surprised!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/05/16/overhauling-the-engine/">WoW Insider</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/wow-graphics-engine-to-be-overhauled-someday/">WoW graphics engine to be overhauled someday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 May 2008 17:30:00 EST.
