Maybe I'm alone in this, but my jaw just dropped when I came home this past week to see that Massively posted the news that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/shadowbane/"><em>Shadowbane</em></a> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/changyou-plans-to-bring-shadowbane-back-in-china/">coming back to life</a>. Granted, it's only going to happen in China, but still, that's pretty incredible. <em>Shadowbane's</em> been in the ground for three years now, and if I had to pick an MMO that deserved resurrection, this particular one would be farthest from my mind (no offense if you liked the game; it's just that there are so many others that are even more worthy).<br />
<br />
But how can this not give you hope? Many of us have lost an MMO we loved or at least had a decked-out character populating the character select screen, and the thought of that game coming back against all odds is a goosebump-rising one. It may also smack of justice served, as some MMOs fail not because of faulty gameplay but because of mismanagement by the studio, complex legal wrangling, or bad marketing.<br />
<br />
Today let's look at a few examples of dead MMOs that were brought back to life and what this may mean for the future of the industry. Zombie MMOs! Not, you know, MMOs with zombies.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/01/the-game-archaeologist-when-dead-mmos-come-back-to-life/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist: When dead MMOs come back to life</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/01/the-game-archaeologist-when-dead-mmos-come-back-to-life/">The Game Archaeologist: When dead MMOs come back to life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 01 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. You may remember <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bill-Roper/">Bill Roper</a> from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Diablo/">Diablo</a></em>. Or, more likely, you remember him from <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Hellgate--London/">Hellgate: London</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em>, probably with emotions that are somewhat less than fond. Several months ago, he was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/disney-interactive-media-group-appoints-bill-roper-as-vice-presi/">appointed the Vice President</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Disney-Interactive-Media-Group/">Disney Interactive Media Group</a>, and it looks like Roper is continuing down a path he's walked many times before. As he oversees the production of games based on Marvel properties, he's also <a href="http://news.mmosite.com/content/c/2012-01-13/bill_roper_intends_to_cooperate_with_korean_game_companies_on_new_titles.shtml">looking for partners to start developing an MMO</a>.<br />
<br />
Specifically, Roper is looking for a partner company in South Korea to work on co-development for several titles, which include MMOs. The obvious benefit for the Korean company would be increased visibility of licensed properties, with Roper hoping that a visit to the nation will produce a better way of developing new games. No word yet on whether or not anyone is interested in the offer, but there's probably no shortage of gamers made apprehensive by anything involving Bill Roper and a new online game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/13/bill-roper-looking-to-partner-with-korean-companies-for-more-mmo/">Bill Roper looking to partner with Korean companies for more MMO development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/t3fun">T3Fun</a> has released a few statistics designed to keep <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london/"><em>Hellgate Global</em></a> in the public eye. Included in the data are interesting nuggets like the gender breakdown for characters created (60/40 in favor of the guys), the most-played class (Marksman), the least-played class (Guardian), and the class with the highest growth rate in terms of character creation (also the Guardian).<br />
<br />
We're not exactly sure what that last bit means, but we can tell you that <em>Hellgate's</em> devs have a few new wrinkles planned for 2012 (assuming the world doesn't end in a hail of apocalyptic demon fire first). Among the improvements slated for the new year are "improved services, deeper guild engagement [...] and greater challenges for the most motivated players [via] some of the biggest events yet."<br />
<br />
<em>Hellgate Global</em> is free-to-play, so there's really nothing stopping you from moseying over to the game's official website and downloading the client.<br />

Just when we thought we'd be stuck in London forever, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london/"><em>Hellgate Global</em></a> took us across the world <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/hellgate-expanding-to-tokyo-on-september-22nd/">to the ravaged vista of Tokyo</a> late last month. To celebrate the good times and charred corpses all across virtual Japan, the resurrected MMOFPS is bringing a set of new challenges for players to overcome.<br />
<br />
For those who scoff at curses and camping out on top of primitive burial grounds, <em>Hellgate </em>dares you to activate your Curse of Dawn mode and attempt to take out Imhotep and Anaksunamun. Those who do so will be on the receiving end of rewards beyond imagination. Also, in-game currency.<br />
<br />
Other challenges heading into the game include a guild battle system, and the return of Boss Time Attack. It's not all work and no play, as players will enjoy bonus supplies, free gifts at specific levels, and XP boosts. For a limited time champion monsters will drop lucky coupons, which can then be exchanged for rare items. These will only be in the game until the end October 15th, as luck can only last for so long.<br />

If you were wondering why <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hanbitsoft">HanbitSoft</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/t3fun">T3Fun</a> rechristened <em>Hellgate: London</em> as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: Global</em></a> prior to resurrecting it as a free-to-play title earlier this summer, now you know.<br />
<br />
The action-horror MMO is expanding to a new burned-out husk of a metropolis, and on September 22nd, you're invited to partake in more grisly demon-slaying action in what remains of post-apocalyptic Tokyo. The city features 24 new levels as well as new monsters and boss mobs. There are also a couple of new game modes on tap, including Cow Room (which pits players against hordes of zombies) and Base Defense (which is exactly what it sounds like).<br />
<br />
Finally, Hell Mode gets an encore, and hardcore types who want better loot, more XP, and more it'll-put-hair-on-your-virtual-chest challenge are welcome to queue up and prove their e-manliness.<br />

As the legions of hell march on the doorstep of London, <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate</em></a> finds itself in need of powerful heroes to defend the last bastion of humankind. Thankfully, the month of September is strewn with events that will assist players in rising to meet the growing demonic threat.<br />
<br />
The festivities begin with an event simply called Join the Ranks. For this event, existing heroes will have the opportunity to recruit new players, which will result in delicious rewards for the the recruiter. Once a healthy regiment of soldiers has been established, it's time to begin training. The Condition System is back in full effect, and it grants each character five hours of bonus experience each day. In addition to the experience bonus, specified dates in September will see the onslaught of a Hell Rush, "effectively doubling the experience earned on those days."<br />
<br />
As players level from these bonuses, they will be eligible for the Level And Be Rewarded event. This event... well, it is what it sounds like, people. At certain leveling milestones, players will receive a variety of rewards ranging from inventory expansion to stat-boosting capsules.<br />
<br />
But what good is a hero without heroic equipment? Throughout the month, the Tools of the Trade event, which provides players with the chance to receive "premium items that aren't available in the cash shop," will be active. Players will also receive two free Resurrection Scrolls daily, in order to keep them fighting on their feet. And to top it off, once players feel prepared for a challenge, they can take part in the Boss Time Attack event, which is a special challenge mode to kill a dungeon boss within a certain time limit. Succeeding, of course, will result in fine rewards. So suit up and move out, heroes. London isn't going to defend itself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/01/hellgate-announces-september-events/">Hellgate announces September events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 01 Sep 2011 18:00:00 EST. As an extremely amateur historian -- and an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">extremely attractive archaeologist</a> -- I've always been fascinated with the "what ifs" of gaming's timeline. What if <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard/">Blizzard</a> had pulled the plug on <a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> during development as it did for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft_Adventures:_Lord_of_the_Clans"><em>Warcraft Adventures</em></a>? What if <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hellgate-london/"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> had a lot more time and resources before it launched? What if North America had embraced the free-to-play model much earlier instead of the subscription model? What if Shawn came to his senses before he hired me?<br />
<br />
Life would've been a lot better. Or worse. That's the problem with counterfactual history: We can make educated guesses, but we'll never really know. While it's sad to see MMOs shut down due to underperformance, it's especially maddening to contemplate MMOs canceled before they even made it to the starting gate. In a new periodic series here at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-game-archaeologist/">The Game Archaeologist</a>, I'm going to look at a few of the "what ifs" of prematurely terminated MMORPGs.<br />
<br />
And to kick us off, I'm tackling probably one of the most frustrating, painful subjects that still linger amongst potential fans. I'm talking, of course, of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/true-fantasy-live-online/"><em>True Fantasy Live Online</em></a>, the game that could've shown the true potential of console MMOs. Or, y'know, not.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/14/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-true-fantasy-live-onlin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: True Fantasy Live Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/14/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-what-ifs-true-fantasy-live-onlin/">The Game Archaeologist and the What Ifs: True Fantasy Live Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 19:00:00 EST. No matter how bad the environmental conditions might be in <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com/"><em>Hellgate</em></a>, that's no reason to eschew one of the time-honored traditions of MMOs everywhere: PvP. But the game's relaunch won't just be including the original PvP elements, and one of the newer additions <a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=198411826872485&amp;set=a.192652530781748.48793.178367715543563&amp;type=1&amp;theater">has just been highlighted</a> -- the Duel Areas. This new addition allows players to face off against one another on specially designed maps, complete with dynamic elements on each map to keep battles unique.<br />
<br />
With four different maps to choose from and a number of pre-fight variables, the Duel Areas are limited at the moment by the fact that only deathmatch games are available within. Killing opponents will reward players with PvP experience, leading to valuable rewards for future PvP matches. Horror fans and MMOFPS aficionados have been setting their clocks back a few years courtesy of this weekend's <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com/"><em>Hellgate</em></a> closed beta event. You may recall the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> as something of a dud when it originally debuted in the winter of 2007.<br />
<br />
Not to worry, though, since <a href="http://www.hanbitsoft.com/about/index.asp">HanbitSoft</a> and <a href="http://t3fun.com/">T3Fun</a> have revived the franchise and converted it to a new free-to-play title called <em>Hellgate Global</em>. <a href="http://www.mmoculture.com/2011/06/hellgate-global-first-impression.html">MMO Culture</a> has a trio of videos chronicling this weekend's event, and you can glimpse character creation as well as a bit of the shooter's demon-slaying gameplay.<br />
<br />
<em>Hellgate</em> intrigued us with its blend of action-horror and apocalyptic stylings the first time around, and we're just as curious for chapter two. Have a look at the videos after the break and share your thoughts on the beta while you're at it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/05/hellgate-beta-videos-show-off-character-creation-gameplay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hellgate beta videos show off character creation, gameplay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/05/hellgate-beta-videos-show-off-character-creation-gameplay/">Hellgate beta videos show off character creation, gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 05 Jun 2011 13:00:00 EST. If it's not hellishly hot enough for you outside, <a href="http://t3fun.com">T3 Entertainment</a> is here to inject a bit more fire and brimstone into your weekend courtesy of <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com"><em>Hellgate's</em></a> closed beta. The first phase of testing kicks off Friday June 3rd at 7:30 p.m. EDT, with a wrap-up scheduled for the same time on June 5th.<br />
<br />
The new and improved <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate</em></a> boasts additional content from the previous iteration of the game, and players who have snagged beta keys can check out either the multiplayer aspects or the single-player campaign (as well as elements of the older <em>Hellgate: Tokyo</em> expansion that are now included in the new version).<br />
<br />

We reported earlier this week on <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com/"><em>Hellgate Global's</em></a> newly minted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/hellgate-global-ramps-up-its-web-presence-new-trailer-released/">web presence</a>. As of today it seems that the highway to hell is officially open, as <a href="http://www.t3fun.com/Home/Home.aspx">T3Fun</a> has posted a <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com/News/Notice_View.aspx?post_key=2">beta signup</a> blurb on the game's forums. Closed beta testing for the resurrected title begins on June 3rd, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/verin">GM Verin</a> says "<em>there's going to be <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com/News/Notice_View.aspx?page=1&amp;search_type=0&amp;search_keyword=&amp;post_key=1">enough CBT keys</a> for everyone, so don't worry about not being able to beta test</em>."<br />
<br />
Applying is as easy as registering on the forums and clicking on the "gates of hell" graphic at the top right of the announcement post. Getting into the beta in this manner is a random event, and you'll know you've been successful if you see an image that reads "your courage has been noted."<br />
<br />
If you don't make the cut on the official forums, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/t3fun">T3Fun</a> has posted a list of partner sites that will be handing out beta keys in the coming days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/20/hellgate-beta-signup-begins/">Hellgate beta signup begins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 20 May 2011 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://hellgate.t3fun.com/"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> is back. <a href="http://www.hanbitsoft.com/about/index.asp">HanbitSoft</a> and <a href="http://www.t3fun.com/Home/Home.aspx">T3Fun</a> are reanimating the corpse of the post-apocalyptic horror RPG/MMO hybrid for a global release in the near future. The title is being developed in Korea, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/t3fun">T3Fun</a> has recently updated its website and <a href="http://www.facebook.com/HellgateGlobal">Facebook</a> page with a lengthy story video and a few gameplay screens.<br />
<br />
The trailer showcases over 12 minutes of CG footage designed to familiarize would-be crusaders with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate's</em></a> world and their place in it. The short version is that the forces of hell have ransacked the earth. The longer version involves copious amounts of swords, machine guns, curvaceous templars and slavering demons bent on subjugating the local populace.<br />
<br />
If you know your gaming history, you'll also know that <em>Hellgate</em> was originally developed by ex-<a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> staffers before collapsing under the weight of unmet expectations and financial pressures. We'll be keeping a close eye on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hanbitsoft">Hanbitsoft's</a> resurrection project and you can too, starting with the cinematic trailer after the cut.<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update]</strong>: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/t3fun">T3Fun</a> and HanbitSoft have officially announced North American closed beta dates for <em>Hellgate</em>, with the kickoff scheduled for June 3rd to June 5th. The game will launch later this year according to a press release.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/hellgate-global-ramps-up-its-web-presence-new-trailer-released/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hellgate Global ramps up its web presence, new trailer released [Updated]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/hellgate-global-ramps-up-its-web-presence-new-trailer-released/">Hellgate Global ramps up its web presence, new trailer released [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 May 2011 10:30:00 EST. </a></div>
How exactly does a well-funded studio composed of <a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> veterans end up creating one of the more spectacular failures in recent gaming history? That's a question that <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6281/bill_roper_reflections_on_hellgate.php?page=1">Gamasutra</a> attempts to answer in a new interview with former <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagship_Studios">Flagship</a> (and <a href="http://crypticstudios.com">Cryptic</a>) CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bill-roper">Bill Roper</a>. <br />
<br />
The debacle that was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellgate:_London"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> stemmed mainly from over-ambition, Roper says, coupled with the lack of capital necessary to support the don't-release-til-it's-ready mentality that much of the staff experienced at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a>. "<em>There was always the support there [at Blizzard] to say, 'You know what? If that's what you need to make this game great, then that's what we'll get for you. We'll figure it out.' It's obviously very different when you are an independent company, right, and not owned by somebody</em>."<br />
<br />
The interview also touches on Flagship's involvement with <a href="http://www.mythos.com/"><em>Mythos</em></a> as well as Roper's experiences dealing with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate</em></a> fallout and extensive (and often personal) fan backlash. "<em>It went from 'I didn't like your game' or 'I don't think your company makes good games' to the personal assault level</em>," he says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/07/bill-roper-reflects-on-hellgate/">Bill Roper reflects on Hellgate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. With the holiday shopping season upon us, gamers are hot for great deals and cheap entertainment. As my wife's logic goes, if something is 80% off, you buy it, even if you didn't really want it in the first place. It's the principle of the thing, an automatic 80% dose of smug satisfaction at being a savvy shopper!<br />
<br />
Not every deal should be pursued, however. Although most video games are playable for years and decades after release, not so with MMOs that have had their service shuttered. It's recently come to my attention that even though these games are completely unplayable -- rendered nothing more than a few cents' worth of a DVD and cardboard packaging -- online retailers haven't kept up with the times and keep these products on the virtual shelves long past their expiration dates.<br />
<br />
That's not to say you should avoid these products at all cost, because studies show that a large percentage of Massively readers have a sick and twisted sense of humor. What would make a better gift this Christmas than a multi-million-dollar-budget MMO that died a horrible death years before?<br />
<br />
So don't be the typical gifter who settles for a Blu-ray player or an iPod -- give a package of misery, disillusionment and broken dreams! Hit the jump for 10 items that absolutely belong in your shopping cart if you wish to be feared!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/25/the-perfect-ten-the-sadistic-shoppers-list-for-black-friday-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: The sadistic shopper's list for Black Friday and Cyber Monday</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/11/25/the-perfect-ten-the-sadistic-shoppers-list-for-black-friday-an/">The Perfect Ten: The sadistic shopper's list for Black Friday and Cyber Monday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST. We're only a few days away from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/halloween/">Halloween</a>, and already the Massively office staff is dressing up in anticipation. Shawn's post-apocalyptic gear is at odds with Rubi's tastefully modest <a href="http://www.guildwars.com/"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> Elementalist outfit. Greg's Squig is in the corner battling it out with Larry's Chewbacca. Bree is dudded up as a giant red corrective marker; Jef's free-to-play outfit requires microtransactions to view in full; and Kyrstalle is photographing it all with her Poloroid <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/one-shots/">One-Shot</a> camera. I think Eliot showed up in full plate armor and riding a mechanical bull, but that just may be his normal work attire.<br />
<br />
So as everyone else is goofing off in the spirit of the holidays, it remains to me, your lovable intern, to hack out a top 10 list in honor of All Hallow's Eve. It's the least I can do since they're paying me in candy.<br />
<br />
While every MMO incorporates horror at some point (even, yes, <a href="http://www.hellokittyonline.com/"><em>Hello Kitty Online's</em></a> Cat-Tastrophie zone), and it's nearly impossible to escape a clutch of giant spiders in any game you visit, I've picked out 10 MMOs that best deliver a slice of October 31st. Some are old, some new, some canceled and some yet to come, but these are 10 of the spookiest MMOs in the world.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/the-perfect-ten-halloween-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Perfect Ten: Halloween MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/the-perfect-ten-halloween-mmos/">The Perfect Ten: Halloween MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. Considering <a href="http://www.mythos.com"><em>Mythos'</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/mythos-is-dead-but-its-memory-lives-on/">stormy</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/03/mythos-lives/">post</a>-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/07/were-assured-that-mythos-is-coming-back/">Flagship</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/mythos-teaser-and-closed-beta-registration-page-emerges/">past</a> and its relatively low profile over the past half year, we were pleased to see the team at Redbana <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/23/redbana-releases-mythos-screens-relaunches-website/">unveil a website revamp last month</a>, complete with a slew of vibrant new screenshots to tease the upcoming closed beta. The infrastructure revealed in the images suggests that the game has come a long way since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/massivelys-interview-with-mythos-gearing-up-for-launch/">we last checked in with the team</a>; although many players might once have pigeon-holed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mythos/"><em>Mythos</em></a> as "just another <a href="http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/"><em>Diablo</em></a> clone," it's now maturing into a hybrid MMORPG that seems to have as much in common with <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">Blizzard's other fantasy game</a> as with the click-fests of yesteryear.<br />
<br />
Curious, we commandeered the team at Redbana in order to ask about the progress of the game. Meet up with us after the break as we discuss the transition to Redbana, overcoming the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/diablo/"><em>Diablo</em></a> stigma, camera perspectives, map travel, character customization, and the likelihood that <em>Mythos</em> will be free-to-play. Oh, and did I mention you can play <a href="http://www.mythos.com/page/Races.aspx">satyrs and cyclopes</a>?!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/still-clicking-our-exclusive-interview-with-the-mythos-dev-team/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Still clicking: Our exclusive interview with the Mythos dev team</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/15/still-clicking-our-exclusive-interview-with-the-mythos-dev-team/">Still clicking: Our exclusive interview with the Mythos dev team</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST. Whether you're <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088763/">Marty McFly</a> or stuck in <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/">Groundhog Day</a> forever, we always have a fascination with the thought of going back in time to change a decision, right a wrong, or reverse the course of history. It's a hypothetical question that appeals to our sometimes crystal-clear hindsight: what decision of yours would you change in the past if given a second chance?<br />
<br />
Looking back over your entire MMO career, whether it spans a couple months or decades, what would be the one decision you'd make differently if you somehow go back in time? Would it be to slap your hand away from the keyboard as you went to sign up for a lifetime sub for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/hellgate-london-is-dead-for-real-this-time/"><em>Hellgate London</em></a>? Would you choose to subscribe to a different MMO than the one you ended up spending years of your life playing? Maybe it would be a small change, such as starting a good friendship earlier, or investing heavily in Activision and Blizzard.<br />
<br />
One change. One decision done different. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> is one of those games that has really divided opinion from our readers. Some brand it as a deeply-flawed game, or were burned by that costly Founder's lifetime subscription when the game shut down after a rather short life. Others -- like some of us on the Massively staff -- truly miss the game's blend of horror and sci-fi elements and have been hoping that <em>Hellgate: London</em> would one day return in some form or another. <br />
<br />
Although the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/hellgate-london-status-purgatory/">future of the game has been murky</a>, the most recent (and most straightforward) announcement is that <em>Hellgate: London</em> is slated to return to Western shores. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/18/hanbitsoft-acquires-worldwide-publishing-rights-for-hellgate-lo/">HanbitSoft has secured the worldwide publishing rights</a> to the game from Namco-Bandai, so now it's just a matter of time before it returns. We're interested to hear what you think about this. Would you welcome the return of <em>Hellgate: London</em>? For that matter, how would you feel about playing the game in its current free-to-play incarnation, <a href="http://hg.hanbiton.com/Home/Home.aspx"><em>Hellgate: Resurrection</em></a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/31/the-daily-grind-will-you-welcome-back-the-hellgate-franchise/">The Daily Grind: Will you welcome back the Hellgate franchise?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 31 Jan 2010 08:00:00 EST. It's been a long and turbulent ride for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a>, stretching all the way back to its rather troubled Halloween 2007 launch under the banner of the ill-fated <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/flagship-studios">Flagship Studios</a>. This stretched through a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/hanbitsoft-admits-their-hellgate-rights-dont-extend-to-us-eu/">bewildering morass of licensing disputes</a>, general misinformation, and mixed signals (like continual English press releases for the game in a non English-speaking market. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/hanbitsoft-plans-hellgate-london-relaunch-and-new-expansion/">*ahem*</a>) in the wake of the Flagship Studios closure and subsequent legal wranglings between T3 Entertainment/HanbitSoft and NAMCO BANDAI. Still, despite some of the flaws both in terms of business decisions made and the game itself, the title has its fans and many were sad to see <em>Hellgate: London</em>'s servers in North America and Europe go dark. <br />
<br />
Liken it to a yo-yo, a roller coaster, or what have you -- it's been confusing, but there have been glimmers of hope of the game one day returning to Western regions. An official release from <em>Hellgate: London</em>'s license holder <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hanbitsoft">HanbitSoft</a> today is perhaps the most solid bit of info we've received about the future of the game outside of Korea. In HanbitSoft's own words: <em>"HanbitSoft Inc., announced today that the company has obtained the publishing rights for </em>Hellgate<em> in North America, Europe and Japan from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.. HanbitSoft and NAMCO BANDAI Games America, the formal owner of the publishing rights in these regions, have entered into an agreement for the game to be distributed by HanbitSoft in the future." </em><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/18/hanbitsoft-acquires-worldwide-publishing-rights-for-hellgate-lo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>HanbitSoft acquires worldwide publishing rights for Hellgate: London</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/18/hanbitsoft-acquires-worldwide-publishing-rights-for-hellgate-lo/">HanbitSoft acquires worldwide publishing rights for Hellgate: London</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 15:00:00 EST. Still, some of us quite enjoyed playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> or saw the potential in it, and would like to see this happen. Back when <em>Hellgate: London</em> was new and held some promise as a good mix of horror and sci-fi, a few of the writers here envisioned how the game might expand if it were successful. Monikers like <em>Hellgate: Hong Kong</em>, <em>Hellgate: New York</em>, and such were mentioned. As was <em>Hellgate: Tokyo,</em> only it seems this one is actually going to happen... for Asia. <br />
<br />
Our Korean is <strike>rusty</strike> non-existent but the (very brief) <em>Hellgate: Tokyo</em> teaser indicates a 2010 release. Fans of <em>Hellgate: London</em> -- we know there must be a <em>few</em> of you out there somewhere -- can <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/debut-teaser-hellgate-tokyo/59631">find the video over at GameTrailers</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/03/hellgate-tokyo-still-not-for-you/">Hellgate: Tokyo, still not for you!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Dec 2009 20:00:00 EST. Combat systems are always an integral part of games, as they provide the main source of conflict and challenge for most players. Lately, however, we've been seeing a change in how our MMOs handle combat. Traditional systems have always been based on click targeting and skill usage, but a number of MMOs have opted to utilize new technology and integrate aiming and elements of first-person shooters into their systems.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a> has been one of the first (as it's built to be a first-person shooter MMO, obviously) but other games like <em><a href="http://www.darkfallonline.com">Darkfall</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.fomportal.com">Face of Mankind</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a>, <em><a href="http://huxley.ijji.com">Huxley</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.apb.com">APB</a></em>, and others have embraced the aiming concept. Our question to you today is what do you think of this shift? Do you like having to aim in your games, as it presents a new level of skill-based gameplay, or does the aiming just not work for you, as lag and other factors can give some players a hefty disadvantage?<br />

From his time at Blizzard, to helming Flagship Studios, and now his relatively new position at Cryptic, Roper has seen and heard a lot, and the interview is all about him having a chance to share his "hard-won wisdom".<br /><br />When Flagship Studios and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> came up, Roper was quick to point out that the venture as a whole was not an entirely bad experience, or one that he'd prefer to forget; rather, there was a lot of learning to be had from going through it: <em>"I can say, 'These are the things that were amazingly successful at Blizzard and how they worked. And these were the things that were amazingly unsuccessful at Flagship.' And so, I think I learned as much from the failure, if not more, than the successes." </em><br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4026/the_hardwon_wisdom_of_bill_roper.php">The full interview</a> covers a lot more than just Flagship, and even if you aren't familiar with Roper, it's interesting to hear the industry insights of a veteran.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/bill-roper-shares-his-industry-experiences/">Bill Roper shares his industry experiences </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 18 May 2009 10:00:00 EST. According to Korean publisher <a href="http://www.hanbitsoft.com/">HanbitSoft</a>, they're <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23027">interested in resurrecting</a> the game in the U.S. and Europe, but their hands are tied by <a href="http://www.namcobandaigames.com/">Namco Bandai</a>. Of course HanbitSoft acquired the title from Flagship, who was the original developer of the game. On top of this, the game is alive and well in Korea under HanbitSoft's domain.<br /><br />Maybe Kee Young Kim, CEO of HanbitSoft, can explain it better: <em>"HanbitSoft does own the intellectual property of Hellgate: London and is interested in providing the game in the US and Europe, but is unable to do so at this time because Namco Bandai has the publishing rights for those regions." </em>Any way you look at it, it seems <em>Hellgate: London</em> is trying hard to come back to its loyal fans.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/hellgate-london-wants-to-come-back-it-really-does/">Hellgate: London wants to come back, it really does</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 19:00:00 EST. It's down! It's up! It's down! It's... sideways?<br /><br />That's the story for the ever growing saga of <a href="http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Games/Pages/HellgateLondon.aspx"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> in a nutshell. This time, however, it's not coming back and there should be no more rumors that it is coming back. HanbitSoft, the Asian publisher of the game, has <a href="http://www.gamecyte.com/hanbitsoft-admits-hellgate-london-will-not-receive-us-updates">finally clarified to GameCyte</a> that they do not have the publishing rights to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hellgate-london"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> in the United States or Europe, just in Asia, excluding Japan.<br /><br />Currently those rights are held by <a href="http://www.namcobandaigames.com/">Namco-Bandai</a>, who have made the decision to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/hellgates-us-eu-servers-and-website-slam-shut/">shut down the Hellgate servers as of February 1st</a>.<br /><br />So it's not coming back. Even though it will still have press releases in English and have updates being made by a <a href="http://www.redbanaus.com/">US developer</a>, it's not coming back. However, if you really want to play, we suggest moving to Asia, as it will still be going strong over there.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/hellgate-london-is-dead-for-real-this-time/">Hellgate: London is dead, for real this time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Mar 2009 19:00:00 EST. Plenty of players turned up to see the "end of the world", and many donated their soon-to-be-worthless in-game currency to the War Drive NPC, granting buffs to the masses. Scott's transcript of the last few moments of chat are an indication of the kind of solidarity and sadness that the most faithful fans displayed as their world was crumbling around them. It's all on HanbitSoft now to save these folks from their <em>Hellgate</em>-less existence.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/02/hellgates-us-eu-servers-and-website-slam-shut/">Hellgate's US/EU servers and website slam shut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Feb 2009 09:00:00 EST. Tamat, the site's Editor-in-Chief, caught up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bill-roper ">Bill Roper</a>, the Design Director for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/champions-online"><em>Champions Online</em></a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cryptic-studios ">Cryptic Studios</a>. The interview ranges from what Roper does at Cryptic to some of mistakes learned along the way -- particularly in the wake of what happened with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/flagship-studios">Flagship Studios</a> and <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com/ "><em>Hellgate: London</em></a>.<br /><br />The interview covers a good range of topics, discussing Roper's transition from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmo-industry">business side of an MMO </a>developer to focusing on creating a game, and how trying to compete with <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>WoW</em></a> isn't a concern for Cryptic with <em>Champions Online</em>. Roper also discusses the idea of bringing some of the original pen and paper <em>Champions Online</em> system to the MMO. He says, <em>"We're including the core concepts of talents, perks, and even exposing the stats system to a degree. We've streamlined some of the concepts of the game to make it more accessible to a broader range of players, but without losing the beauty of what makes Champions the great game and IP it is." </em><br /><br />Have a look at the full <a href="http://www.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=16753">interview with Cryptic's Bill Roper over at Allakhazam</a> for more on the directions <em>Champions Online</em> will be taking.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/bill-roper-of-cryptic-studios-discusses-champions-online/">Bill Roper of Cryptic Studios discusses Champions Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Jan 2009 19:00:00 EST. Always named in the popular lists of "Failures for 2007/2008", <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com/"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> may not be dying off as easily as we thought. As <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22005">reported by Gamasutra</a>, HanbitSoft has announced that they will be keeping the game alive as a free-to-play model after the initial closure date of January 31st, 2009. They can do this (despite <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/hellgate-london-to-shut-down-in-february/">Namco-Bandai's decision to close the game</a>) because they own the IP, engines and source codes for the Flagship Studios title.<br /><br />In November of last year, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/hanbitsoft-plans-hellgate-london-relaunch-and-new-expansion/">we touched on this a bit</a>, as HanbitSoft mentioned their continued efforts with the game, which might even include an expansion. At that time, the rumor was that it would be available only in Asia, yet this newest announcement is for global availability. This brings up an interesting thought though: If <em>Hellgate: London</em> can do it, can <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tabula-rasa">the others</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/hellgate-london-staying-alive-through-free-to-play/">Hellgate: London staying alive through free-to-play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 13:00:00 EST. Included are looks into why <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>, <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a>, <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.burningsea.com/page/home"><em>Pirates of the Burning Sea</em></a> either outright failed (in the case of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/honoring-tabula-rasa-through-screenshots/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/hellgate-london-subscriptions-suspended/"><em>Hellgate</em></a>) or were unable to get the subscriber numbers they expected with their launches.<br /><br />What separates this blog post from the myriad of other posts on the same subject is that the article ends with the many things that these games all did wrong and other developers should learn from. Little things, like listening closely to the feedback from your beta testers, fostering a community, and learning to stay away from the concept of "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/age-of-conan-is-it-a-fun-mess-or-just-a-mess/">we'll patch it to perfection</a>." It's a good analysis of the many failures of other games, and a kind tip of the hat to the things an MMO can do right, such as Mythic's openness with <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/2008-wasnt-a-good-year-for-mmos/">2008 wasn't a good year for MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/the-daily-grind-have-you-had-to-cancel-an-mmo-subscription/">Yesterday's grind</a> concerned the very real problem of having to let one of your subscriptions lapse due to the state of the economy. When the times are tough and money is tight, sometimes you need to find what will ultimately pay off in the end for you. So, today's question is ultimately derived from yesterday's question -- would you like more games to offer lifetime subscriptions, like <a href="http://www.thelordoftheringsonline.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>?<br /><br />For those unfamiliar with the system, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> offers subscribers the ability to pay a fee, about <a href="http://lotro.warcry.com/news/view/73337-299-Lifetime-Memberships-Now-Available">299 dollars</a>, and then that's it. No more paying a monthly fee for the rest of the lifetime of the game. While it's an extremely high upfront cost, the benefit is that you will never pay again to keep your account active. Instead of worrying about lapsing subscriptions, you can play when you want, whenever you want.<br /><br />The downside to this, besides the upfront cost, is the problem that may occur if your game doesn't do so well. <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com/"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> lifetime subscribers are currently feeling this problem, as their game is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/hanbitsoft-admits-their-hellgate-rights-dont-extend-to-us-eu/">leaving them high and dry</a>. The lifetime subscription is only good if your game survives long enough to make it worth your while -- the one downside to this type of payment plan.<br /><br />But, we leave the final judgment to you, readers. Would you like more of your games to offer this type of subscription plan? Comment away!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/the-daily-grind-would-you-like-to-see-more-lifetime-subscriptio/">The Daily Grind: Would you like to see more lifetime subscriptions?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 08:00:00 EST. Factor in the high costs of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mmo-industry">creating and publishing an MMO title</a> these days and the mistakes still being made in the industry, and perhaps it's time for a primer on how <em>not </em>to lose money when making an MMO to be widely disseminated. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/adammartin">Adam Martin</a> over at <a href="http://t-machine.org/index.php/about-2/ ">T=Machine</a> has written just that. In the first of a two-part series, Martin provides insightful analysis of some glaring mistakes made in the MMO industry, and how some of those pitfalls could have been avoided. He does so by looking at a few of 2008's troubled massively multiplayer titles, namely <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.playtr.com/index.html">Tabula Rasa</a></em>, and <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com "><em>Age of Conan</em></a>. It's an interesting read, even for those who are far less enthusiastic about the business decisions behind MMOs than about the games themselves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/investing-wisely-in-massively-multiplayer-online-games/">Investing wisely in massively multiplayer online games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 19:00:00 EST. How could a post-apocalyptic zombie shoot 'em up have gone so very wrong? Though your servers are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/hellgate-london-to-shut-down-in-february/">shutting down at the end of January</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/hanbitsoft-admits-their-hellgate-rights-dont-extend-to-us-eu/">never again to return to US or European shores</a>, we ran into this collector's edition box just yesterday, placed at an appealing eye-level on a Circuit City shelf, just begging the innocent passerby to take it home (or perhaps, considering the game's rocky history, simply to give it a good hug). And it's not the only MMO that's leaving us in early 2009: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/tabula-rasa-to-shut-down-in-february-2009/"><em>Tabula Rasa</em> is closing at the end of February</a>. (Though unlike <em>Hellgate</em>, which isn't even accepting new subscriptions at this point, <em>TR</em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/tabula-rasa-goes-free-to-play-one-month-early/">free to play for everyone</a> until the servers shut down.) These are hardly the only games to have met an unfortunate end: remember <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_and_Beyond" style="font-style: italic;">Earth and Beyond</a>? <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_Assault" style="font-style: italic;">Auto Assault</a>? Oh, MMOs, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/22/the-digital-continuum-why-must-mmos-die/">why must you go away</a> and leave us oh so alone? (Not that we here at Massively are at all bitter about MMO closures. These games were only our best friends once upon a time.) So this morning, in honor of that lonely Hellgate box, which MMOs going or gone do you miss?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/29/the-daily-grind-the-ones-that-got-away/">The Daily Grind: The ones that got away</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 08:00:00 EST. During <a href="http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/50577">a recent interview with Ten Ton Hammer</a>, <a href="http://www.red5studios.com/en/">Red 5 Studios'</a> Mark Kern described his views on why games like <a href="http://www.rgtr.com"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a> and <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com/"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> had recently failed, and how his colleagues at Red 5 are making sure an early game closure isn't in their future.<br /><em><br />"I think the key is that you need to marry whatever your theme is to the nature of the gameplay," </em>Kern advised.<em> "I think that the issue comes in when you take a theme or a genre that doesn't fit with the style of gameplay that you're making. I think that's some of what you've seen with these failed games. If you just go out and try to make a </em><a href="http://massively.com/tag/wow">WoW</a><em>-type of game with a few tweaks, then try to place the sci-fi genre on top of it, I think you've got some big issues there." </em><br /><br />Ouch! While there's still a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/ncsoft-announces-martial-arts-mmo-blade-and-soul/ ">steady influx of Asian games</a> reworked to fit western playstyles, there's also a growing number of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/when-western-mmos-go-east/">western MMOs being exported to Asia</a>, particularly Korea. The obvious title that succeeds anywhere it goes is <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, whose Asian following is legion. But smaller games have also been making inroads. <a href="http://www.eve-online.com "><em>EVE Online</em></a> has been operating in China for years and <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com "><em>Hellgate: London</em></a> gained a new lease on life in Korea. They're not alone in this. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> has its eyes set on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/lotros-korean-launch-may-alter-western-business-model/">expanding into Korea</a> with <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, and we know that <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/age-of-conan-expands-its-bloody-conquest-to-korea/ ">marching eastward</a>, too. The latest successful western title to look east is <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>, which will soon be played in Korea as well. <br /><br /><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/electronic-arts">Electronic Arts</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangame">Hangame</a> are partnering to bring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> to South Korea. In a related press statement, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mythic's Mark Jacobs</a> said, <em>"By partnering with Hangame, we hope to provide Korean gamers with a fresh, new fantasy experience and years' worth of Realm vs. Realm adventures on the frontlines of WAR."</em> You can see the <a href="http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/hangame-and-ea-to-bring,620760.shtml">full announcement about <em>WAR's</em> attempt to capture Korean gamers</a> over at The Earth Times. Given how PvP-centric Korean MMOs tend to be, do you think <em>Warhammer Online</em> would be a natural fit for gamers in this market?<hr />

No doubt it must be even moreso for players who just want to know if they'll get their game back <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/hellgate-london-to-shut-down-in-february/">after Namco Bandai's servers close in the spring</a>. First it seemed that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/hellgate-london-status-purgatory/">Hanbitsoft would be rezzing the game worldwide</a>, then it was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/hanbitsoft-plans-hellgate-london-relaunch-and-new-expansion/">less clear based on Redbana's development</a>. Now it seems even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hanbitsoft">Hanbitsoft</a> has acknowledged that they don't have rights to the game in the US and EU.<br /><br />WarCry is reporting <a href="http://www.warcry.com/news/view/87211-Namco-Bandai-No-Hellgate-For-U-S-or-Europe">based on a press release</a> from Namco specifically stating that they own the IP for publishing here in the states and over in Europe. Gamecyte follows that announcement up with <a href="http://www.gamecyte.com/hanbitsoft-press-release-confirms-namco-bandai-owns-us-hellgate-rights">a more detailed look</a>, noting that Hanbitsoft would like to run the game and do some profitsharing with Namco for these two lucrative markets. Namco's position on the matter, though, seems to be that the service is closing and everyone is moving on. So - for the time being - it looks like we'll be bidding farewell to <em>Hellgate London</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/hanbitsoft-admits-their-hellgate-rights-dont-extend-to-us-eu/">Hanbitsoft admits their Hellgate rights don't extend to US/EU</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. While we had some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/hellgate-london-to-shut-down-in-february/ ">dire news that the servers will go dark</a> at the end of January, we also know that <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19658">development for the title</a> is still being done <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/hellgate-london-status-purgatory/ ">in Redbana's California office</a>... just not for which region. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/hellgate-london-status-purgatory/">the future of <em>Hellgate: London</em> on thin ice</a>, it should be no surprise that <a href="http://www.flagshipstudios.com/">Flagship Studios</a> co-founder and CEO, Bill Roper, has sought greener pastures. <a href="http://www.warcry.com/news/view/87156-Bill-Roper-Joins-Cryptic-as-Lead-Champions-Designer">As was just announced</a>, Roper has joined <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic Studios</a> as their new Design Director for <a href="http://www.champions-online.com/"><em>Champions Online</em></a>. Cryptic's CEO John Needham is optimistic about the acquisition: <em>"Bill brings a ton of creative energy to the Cryptic office and we're thrilled to have him join our team. His years of gaming and online experience are huge assets to all of our projects, and Bill will assist us in furthering our studio's vision to create innovative, exciting MMO gameplay. "</em><br /><br />These years of gaming and online experience Needham mentions include a long list of impressive titles. Not only did Roper work as a producer and developer on many classics like the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft_universe"><em>Warcraft</em></a> trilogy, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft">StarCraft</a></em> and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_(computer_game)">Diablo</a></em>, but he also dabbled in some voiceover work for many of these games as well. Roper is now a key asset for <em>Champions Online</em>, and we look forward to more news on his work with the game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/03/flagship-founder-bill-roper-joins-cryptic-studios/">Flagship founder Bill Roper joins Cryptic Studios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST. For every <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment">Sony Online Entertainment</a>, there are several smaller companies brimming with ideas about how to inject change into the MMO market. Some succeed by breaking from the <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> paradigm. Most do not. <br /><br />Writer James Matson writes about these titles that begin full of promise but ultimately meet a chilly reception by MMO gamers, in an article at <a href="http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/ ">Atomic</a>. He touches on the fact that the sometimes high price of the box sale paired with monthly MMO fees, sustained over some months, leads to some serious disappointment when the MMO fails and the servers go dark. Matson specifically cites the examples of Auran's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/fury"><em>Fury</em></a> and (what is currently <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/namco-bandai"><em>Namco-Bandai's</em></a>) <a href="http://www.hellgatelondon.com"><em>Hellgate: London</em></a>. <em>"This would appear to the be the first tendrils of a new kind of gaming plague that's arrived with MMOs, games that can be rendered useless due to mismanagement, poor sales or just bad luck,"</em> Matson writes. <br /><a href="http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/11/02/001225&amp;from=rss"></a><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/are-all-mmos-just-extended-vaporware/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Are all MMOs just extended vaporware?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/02/are-all-mmos-just-extended-vaporware/">Are all MMOs just extended vaporware?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 Nov 2008 13:00:00 EST.
