If you have wondered about what was going on in <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studios'</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cinco-barnes">Cinco Barnes</a>' head while designing <a href="http://www.darklegends.com"><em>Dark Legends</em></a>, wonder no more. I was asked to sit in on a Google + hangout, essentially a public video conference call, with Cinco, <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/117322211659659422971/posts">Carter Dotson</a> from <a href="http://www.148apps.com/">148apps</a> and <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/117328393828989623748/posts">Heidi Duran</a> from <a href="http://www.girlgamer.com/">GirlGamer</a>. The event was moderated by <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/112241639219303464110/posts">Ashley Esqueda</a> from <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/author/2713982/ashley-esqueda/">G4TV</a>. Cinco fielded some questions from us and fans of the game.<br />
<br />
Want to see some cool concept art? Need to know if the energy mechanic in <em>Dark Legends</em> was created just to make fast cash? Have you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/arcane-legends-officially-announced/">heard about</a> Spacetime's newly announced title <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/content.php?416-Arcane-Legends"><em>Arcane Legends</em></a>, but have no idea what might be involved with the game? Have you wondered about the images in the opening video, the appearance of top hats, and the possibility of obtaining all of those great costumes through in-game means? You can find out the answers to these and other important questions in the video, embedded just after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/spacetime-studios-cinco-barnes-talks-dark-legends-design/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Spacetime Studios' Cinco Barnes talks Dark Legends design</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/spacetime-studios-cinco-barnes-talks-dark-legends-design/">Spacetime Studios' Cinco Barnes talks Dark Legends design</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 16:00:00 EST. What's happening, shooter fans? Hopefully everyone's getting ready for a long holiday weekend filled with family, food, and gaming (of course). Several interesting online shooter nuggets came across my desk this week, including a deeper look at <a href="http://worldofwarplanes.com"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a>, a <a href="http://firefallthegame.com"><em>Firefall</em></a> beta clarification, and some sexy new <a href="http://dust514.com"><em>DUST 514</em></a> details.<br />
<br />
Also, would you believe a real-life -- and real, live -- online FPS featuring actual locations?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/the-firing-line-american-aircraft-and-a-real-life-shooter/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: American aircraft and a real-life shooter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/the-firing-line-american-aircraft-and-a-real-life-shooter/">The Firing Line: American aircraft and a real-life shooter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 12:00:00 EST. It may be a new name, but it's the same old team. The makers of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wurm-online/"><em>Wurm Online</em></a> have changed their studio name from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/onetwofree/">Onetoofree</a> to the more alliterative Code Club.<br />
<br />
According to the website, the name Onetoofree was always intended to be a temporary one and was too annoying to relay to people vocally (as you'd always have to spell it out). The old title also gave no strong impression as to what the studio was like or did.<br />
<br />
Code Club fits the team's visions and is aiming to be identified as an "exotic-style" company. After all, <a href="http://www.codeclub.se/">according to its site</a> the company serves "hot coffee and cold drinks in our spacious jungle lounge." Because the name change hurts the company's Google rankings, the studio asked that everyone in the world -- or at least dedicated fans -- start Googling "Code Club" instead.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/12/wurm-onlines-studio-changes-its-moniker/">Wurm Online's studio changes its moniker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 20:30:00 EST. Over the last week I have been obsessing over <a href="http://www.glitch.com"><em>Glitch</em></a>, the new browser-based MMORPG brought to us by <a href="http://tinyspeck.com/">Tiny Speck</a>. I will go into details of <em>why</em> in my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rise-and-shiny/">Rise and Shiny</a> column, but for now, let's just say that I think it is one of the greatest things I have come across in a long time. For the record, I was talking about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Glitch/">Glitch</a></em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/free-for-all-four-games-im-dying-to-play-in-2011/">before it was popular</a> (that hipster cred should get my a free pair of glasses in <em>Glitch</em>!) and was excited about starting this column <em>because</em> of games like <em>Glitch</em>.<br />
<br />
In short, I knew that the browser market was huge, and I knew it was only going to grow bigger. Yes, I know what you're thinking, and yes I am claiming that we are starting to see the end of the heavy-duty client and demand for expensive hardware and upgrades. It's a big prediction, but click past the cut and let me explain.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/mmobility-the-rise-of-the-browser/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: The rise of the browser</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/mmobility-the-rise-of-the-browser/">MMObility: The rise of the browser</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST. We've all played that age-old game of pondering what we might take with us on an endless trip to a desert island. What music would you bring? Whom would you bring with you? What food would you bring, if you could choose only one food? I've recently been thinking about this old game again, mainly because of my obsession with portability and all-in-one devices. Which device would I bring with me to that island, if I had to choose? (Let's forget the fact that I could just make a call or otherwise contact the authorities to rescue me off the island!)<br />
<br />
The ultimate question is this: Which MMO would I bring installed on that device? Or, going a bit further, which apps or other downloads would I include? Once I started asking, my fantasy turned into somewhat of a challenge to myself: Could I survive a week without <em>any</em> access to a desktop at all? Could I write, play, and otherwise continue to do my job with only a pocket-sized device?<br />

Before I get too far in this new column, I need to take stock of my weaponry. I now have almost everything I need: an <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/">iPhone</a>, an <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/">iPad</a>, a new <a href="http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/htc-inspire.jsp?WT.srch=1#fbid=_krzhGn6JpG">HTC Inspire</a> Android phone, one <a href="http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?storeName=computer_store&amp;category=notebooks&amp;series_name=G62x_series&amp;a1=Starting+price&amp;v1=%24400-%24600">basic laptop of choice</a>, and a pretty decent gaming rig (if a little old). I have everything I need to test out games across different browsers and devices. I am prepared to slug these pieces of hardware wherever I need to; I am ready to walk with them in hand.<br />
<br />
It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.<br />
<br />
I could use some advice, though. I have my preferences, but I wonder what my readers think. Which browser do you prefer? Why? For example, I am in love with Chrome for various reasons, but some games have issues with it. Do I weigh the good against the bad and claim it as my default anyway? Lately, I have all the major browsers bookmarked on my desktop, waiting to go. What about security? I'll be honest: I'm not an expert.<br />
<br />
Click past the cut and let's discuss. Maybe you can help me.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/mmobility-battle-of-the-browsers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: Battle of the browsers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/mmobility-battle-of-the-browsers/">MMObility: Battle of the browsers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a>'s operating system, <a href="http://www.android.com/">Android</a>, has had an odd genesis. It's been ported around for every flavor of mobile device, from phones to tablet PCs, but it's coming into a field already crowded with operating systems -- and the plethora of hardware running the system has hampered some efforts to port games to the architecture. <a href="http://www.guildsoftware.com/">Guild Software Inc.</a> is making the push, however, adapting their indie MMO <em><a href="http://vendetta-online.com">Vendetta Online</a> </em>to the Android system architecture.<br />
<br />
For proponents of the Droid over the <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/">iPhone</a>, the good news is that it's the same operating system on your phone of choice. However, the port is specifically targeting the NVIDIA Tegra processors, aiming toward smaller netbooks and tablets rather than phones. In <a href="http://www.vendetta-online.com/android/">the official FAQ</a>, the developers clarify that they're not currently planning to aim the port at any phones, although the door is open once the initial port is finished. It's still an exciting step for the Android architecture, however, and it continues expanding the network of MMOs available for mobile devices.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/11/vendetta-online-to-be-ported-to-the-android-os/">Vendetta Online to be ported to the Android OS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 11 Jun 2010 11:30:00 EST. You might want to strap in, for the road connecting the facts on this one is bumpy indeed -- but intriguing as well. <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3178821">Via 1UP comes the word</a> that search engine giant <a href="http://www.google.com/">Google</a> has hired <a href="http://www.satori.org/">Mark DeLoura</a> to work on game development for the Android and Chrome OS. DeLoura brings with him a truckload of game consulting experience, and had a few interesting comments about the new job <a href="http://www.satori.org/2010/04/joining-google/">on his blog</a>:<br />
<br />
<em>"Over the years I've seen Google ship products that seemed very useful for game developers, like Google SketchUp and 3D Warehouse. I always wondered why they didn't dive into games further - or, perhaps they were, and they were doing it in secret! :-) Google Lively was probably the closest thing to a game that they produced. When I started hearing about their work on O3D, I began to get very curious about what Google was planning. Clearly there are a number of initiatives going on at Google that can relate to games in some way. Those of you who attended GDC for example saw a massive push for games for Android, with Google giving away perhaps thousands of Android devices. Now seemed like the perfect time to join Google!"</em><br />
<br />
So what does this have to do with the world of MMOs? Perhaps nothing, perhaps a great deal. If you'll recall, Google experimented with an online avatar experience called <a href="http://www.lively.com/goodbye.html"><em>Lively</em></a> that was closed in early 2009. Even though <em>Lively </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/the-death-of-lively-and-some-lessons-about-complexity/">was not a roaring success</a>, Google's interest in the games market and their prior foray into online worlds could signal a possible future contender in our neck of the woods.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/15/google-takes-a-long-sideways-look-at-gaming/">Google takes a long sideways look at gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 15 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. His posts about <em><a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> </em>architecture, when they appear, are generally packed with information about upcoming plans, pending architecture changes and more. <p>In a similar vein, there's a notice from Liana Linden about <a href="https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/technology/blog/2010/01/07/search-upcoming-release">some late-January upgrades to the Google appliances</a> that handle much of Second Life's search infrastructure. Dave Murray is the UI director of <em><a href="http://www.champions-online.com">Champions Online</a></em>, although this isn't his first gig working on a user interface. Before he came to work for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptic/">Cryptic</a>, Dave <a href="http://championsonlinedailynews.com/how-google-influenced-champions-online/">was part of the team that developed</a> Google's Gmail interface, so you can imagine he's got some experience. He worked on that project for two years, and that time spent seems to have taught him that less is more.<br /><br />Our experience with user interfaces have proven the simplicity-to-powerful ratio to be incredibly important. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/create-my-champion-bgbb/">In our time with</a> <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Champions-Online/">Champions Online</a></em>, the powers window and its ability to sort through the huge list of powers fluidly has been a prime example of this philosophy. We already knew that someone over at Cryptic knew what they were doing with the UI, but it's good to have a name so we can say thanks to Dave. Chang's "<a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22316">Opinion: Why We Need To Rebrand Free To Play</a>" addresses the cynicism and perceptions of questionable quality that tends to surface in discussions about free-to-play games. <br /><br />Chang's piece points out similarities between the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/business-models">F2P business model</a> and Google, although he admits it's not a perfect comparison. Google's service itself is free, but ultimately fuels its revenue streams through monetized services offered. The large userbase who simply wants to use the service for free is vital to the company's business model, and thus there are some parallels to an MMO operating without subscriptions. <em>"In both situations, people receive a valuable service -- free search or a free game experience,"</em> says Chang.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/shaking-the-stigma-of-free-to-play/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shaking the stigma of "Free-to-Play"</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/shaking-the-stigma-of-free-to-play/">Shaking the stigma of "Free-to-Play"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 09:00:00 EST. <p>At the end of 2008, Google's <a href="http://www.lively.com/"><em>Lively</em></a> closed down. However in the comparatively few weeks since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/end-of-life-for-googles-lively/">the announcement of the impending shutdown</a>, <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/lively">Lively</a></em> has been rebuilt from relative scratch by a Chinese company, and the new service, called <em><a href="http://www.newlively.com/">newlively</a></em> went live around the same time that the original service shuttered.</p>
<p>If you look at <a href="http://www.newlively.com/"><em>newlively's</em> Web-site</a>, you'll likely be struck by the haunting familiarity of it. That's hardly surprising. That appears to be Lively's original HTML code, just slightly tweaked for the new domain name. <em>Newlively's</em> creator claims to have recreated the models from the original. We've not tried the new service ourselves -- being just a bit a bit nervous about third-party downloads of debatable antecedence.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the service is operational, and virtual worlds writer, artist and composer, <a href="http://dizzybanjo.wordpress.com/2009/01/01/an-afterlife-for-google-lively-newlively/">Dizzy Banjo has some more information</a> about this unexpected recreation of Google's virtual environment service.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/03/lively-is-dead-long-live-newlively/">Lively is dead. It was literally a checklist of what critics have been saying that virtual environments such as Linden Lab's <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a> absolutely <em>must</em> have in order to make it.</p>
<p>A simplified user-interface, embedded in the Web-browser, content designed by professionals rather than (mostly) amateurs, a 'room' (or contained space) model rather than a widespread world. While it was touted as having no requirement for a separate downloadable client, that wasn't actually true -- it did actually have one, though it was relatively painless to download and install.</p>
<p>In short, it was the perceived holy grail of virtual environment 'must-haves' for success, as so frequently touted in media articles which lauded its simplicity and accessibility. Also, in short, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lively/">Lively</a></em> was a failure -- a spectacular one. Spectacular, but not without educational value.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/the-death-of-lively-and-some-lessons-about-complexity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The death of Lively and some lessons about complexity</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/the-death-of-lively-and-some-lessons-about-complexity/">The death of Lively and some lessons about complexity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 15:00:00 EST. They can afford to try out projects, and don't stick with what isn't working. Well, it appears that their <a href="http://www.lively.com/"><em>Lively</em></a> virtual environment chat-rooms haven't worked out. <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/lively-no-more.html">Google will be shuttering the <em>Lively</em> service</a> on 31 December 2008, less than six months after launching.<br /></p>
<p>Lively's Web-site -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/googles-lively-live-public-beta/">launched to the public on July 9 this year</a> -- will remain up, and the images of the rooms preserved, but the rooms themselves will no longer be active. This seems to also end Google's plans to leverage <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lively">Lively</a></em> as a games-platform. It isn't clear at this point what it means for Google's partner, <a href="http://www.x-raykid.com/index.html">X-Ray Kid Studios</a> who has been working on <em>Lively</em> for the last two years, and was increasingly positioned as Google's games division.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/end-of-life-for-googles-lively/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>End of life for Google's Lively</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/end-of-life-for-googles-lively/">End of life for Google's Lively</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST. <p>From Chiba, Japan, AP reports on Sony and Microsoft's upcoming avatar-based offerings at the annual Tokyo Game Show. Associated Press goes to great lengths to avoid spooking what they seem to feel are a parochial and hidebound audience with gems like, <em>'In the so-called "metaverse" in cyberspace, players manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, engaging in relationships, social gatherings and businesses</em>.'</p>
<p>Of course, the notion of graphical avatars as a part of a wide variety of Internet services has persisted for most of the last two decades, but even the sense of this is backwards.To the casual and uninformed observer it might appear that the user manipulates this (ahem) 'digital image' to perform actions, but this is substantively not the case. The user moves or takes action through the virtual environment in relation to spaces and to other users, and the avatar represents the action to others.</p>
<p>It's just that sort of long-arm punditry that seems to make AP compare Sony's <a href="http://www.homebetatrial.com/"><em>Home</em></a> and Microsoft's <em>Avatar</em> service with Linden Lab's <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a>, despite Sony and Microsoft's respective services having about as much in common with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a>, as they have with <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_(video_game)">Mortal Kombat</a></em>. <em>'The real-time interactive computer-graphic worlds are similar to Linden Lab's "Second Life,"</em>' writes the AP correspondent, in a wondrously surreal moment.</p>

<div align="left">Kevin Hanna, creative director of <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a>'s <a href="http://www.lively.com/html/landing.html"><em>Lively</em></a>, <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/google-lively-to-become-online-games-platform">said at AGDC that he hopes that <em>Lively</em> will become an online gaming platform that will challenge the status quo</a> in a game industry he says is currently dominated by a "corporate mentality" that is "sucking the life out of what should be the most creative and innovative medium out there."<br /><br />He said that game developers and publishers seem eager to be "first to be second." That is, they have no interest in creating anything genuinely new. They just want to capitalize on ideas that have already been proven. His hope is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lively"><em>Lively</em></a> will lower the barrier to entry so would-be developers ("passionate startups and kids in college") can experiment with new ideas with less risk.<br /><br />So far, the aspects of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/google">Google</a>'s vision for <em>Lively</em> as a game development platform that we've seen have looked like a greatly scaled back, poor man's version of <a href="http://www.metaplace.com"><em>MetaPlace</em></a>; just the tools for creating simple arcade-like games, without any of the loftier purpose. But Hanna's comments suggest that at least some folks on the <em>Lively</em> team have grander ambitions after all.</div>

<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/kingdon-feels-the-fear/">Linden Lab certainly showed signs of fear</a> when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/googles-lively-live-public-beta/">Google's <em>Lively</em> kicked off its public beta</a>. Now we're seeing signs more akin to terror, panic or desperation. 'Who wouldn't be concerned when Google comes after their business?' said new Linden Lab CEO Mark Kingdon to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601204&amp;sid=a79MD2llaiDg&amp;refer=technology">Bloomberg</a>.</p>
<p>Given recent changes and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/peering-inside-a-media-campaign/">marketing pushes</a>, you can see Linden Lab's management showing a sheen of sweat. Curiously, it seems that Google <em>isn't</em> after Linden Lab's business -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/look-lively/">Lively's certainly no competitor to the business that Linden Lab has</a>. However, what Google represents seems to be a threat to the business that Linden Lab <em>wants</em> to have.</p>
<p>This week saw <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601204&amp;sid=a79MD2llaiDg&amp;refer=technology">the hiring of Frank Ambrose</a> (AOL's head of technology for infrastructure and network services for a decade) as Senior VP of global technology. While Ambrose has more tech knowledge than the average suit in his position, his primary competencies seem to be negotiations, coordination, contracts and costs -- which all marries up nicely with Linden Lab making a push into corporate, government and military sales, and <a href="http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/08/06/linden-labs-cloak-and-dagger-job-ad/">hiring additional staff to do just that</a>. We're not sure what they're going to be selling, exactly, but virtual environment meeting spaces are probably right at the top of the list. </p>

<p>Indeed considering that information about <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/lively">Lively's</a></em> launch was available to a number of people who were close to Linden Lab, either as partners or ex-staffers, it seems silly to suggest that Linden Lab might not have known <em>Lively's</em> public beta launch date, unless those contacts were aflame with considerable, searing resentment.</p>
<p>Wheezing, clanking and dripping oil from dark and unnameable apertures, one of Linden Lab's most neglected subsystems -- the marketing machine -- arose from it's years-long slumber and went about it's ponderous, mechanical business.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/peering-inside-a-media-campaign/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Peering Inside: A media campaign</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/peering-inside-a-media-campaign/">Peering Inside: A media campaign</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 10:30:00 EST. <p>'The possibilities of Virtual Worlds have attracted a slew of entrepreneurs and even some Internet giants,' writes Kingdon in his second paragraph, 'Some are offering a simple, visually appealing chat solution. Others are more ambitious. Second Life offers something no ones else does - an astoundingly rich array of user-created content and a large, diverse and ever-expanding virtual economy.'</p>
<p>And it isn't hard to see which Internet giant and what visually appealing chat solution he might be referring to, especially considering the timing of the statement.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/kingdon-feels-the-fear/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kingdon feels the fear</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/kingdon-feels-the-fear/">Kingdon feels the fear</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 21:30:00 EST. By now, you've probably seen all sorts of news reports calling it a rival and competitor to Linden Lab's virtual world, <a href="http://secondlife.com/"><em>Second Life</em></a><em>.</em> Technically, that's what we call bollocks.</p>
<p>Describing <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lively">Lively</a></em> as a rival to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life"><em>Second Life</em></a> is like calling a conference center a rival to a library. They're just not servicing the same needs, and the comparison is fundamentally nonsensical. <em>Lively</em> is tightly focused, and fails to intrude on the bulk of virtual worlds space.</p>
<p>So, what's the deal with <em>Lively</em>? <p>Open to the public just today, it seems hard to believe that Google's new <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lively"><em>Lively</em></a> service is the much-vaunted virtual world product <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/asu-testing-snow-crash-for-google/"><em>Project Snowcrash</em> aka <em>MyWorld</em></a> that has been in secret beta-testing for some time.</p>
<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/lively"><em>Lively</em></a> is a series of web-embeddable virtual spaces (think <a href="http://metaplace.com/"><em>Metaplace</em></a>) that function as a series of otherwise disconnected chatrooms (think <em><a href="http://imvu.com/">IMVU</a></em> or <a href="http://twinity.com/"><em>Twinity</em></a>). You <a href="http://www.lively.com/html/landing.html">download the browser plugin</a> for Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer (both Windows only, sorry folks), sign in with your google account, create a room or join one and you're ready to go. Just make sure you've <a href="https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=fiji&amp;passive=true&amp;nui=1&amp;continue=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lively.com%2Fpopular">signed into the Lively website at least once</a> -- otherwise you'll have the Joining Room message forever.</p>
<p>A selection of 'hip' human and furry avatars are available, along with an assortment of clothing. There is no user-created content at this time. We'll have some more impressions for you once we've given this a once-over around the office, so stay tuned.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/09/googles-lively-live-public-beta/">Google's Lively: Live public beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 07:00:00 EST. <p>Corr Linden today posted the announcement of a Google Calendar on the <a href="http://blog.secondlife.com/">official Linden Blog</a> today. The posting remained up long enough to hit the public feeds and the Web newswires, and to start attracting user comments before the post was yanked from the site.</p>
<p>It was up long enough for the post (though not the comments) to be cached and copied nearly everywhere, so <a target="_blank" href="http://www.google.com/calendar/hosted/lindenlab.com/embed?src=publicevents%40lindenlab.com&amp;ctz=America/Los_Angeles">here's the link to the calendar if you missed it</a>. At present it only seems to contain Linden staff in-world office hours.</p>
<p>We've no idea at this stage why the post was yanked. It doesn't seem to contain any secrets, sinister or otherwise. You can add the calendar to your Google Calendar account by adding <a href="mailto:PublicEvents@lindenlab.com" title="PublicEvents@lindenlab.com">PublicEvents@lindenlab.com</a>.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/linden-public-events-calendar-announced-then-pulled/">Linden public events calendar announced ... then pulled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 00:30:00 EST. We're just looking at what it would mean if you did. There's been talk for years about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/linden-lab">Linden Lab</a> taking the company through <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Initial_public_offering" target="_blank">IPO (Initial Public Offering)</a> and going public.</p>
<p>Given the vision and history of the company, and the overall direction of the business, an IPO would more or less signal an epic failure to deliver.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/24/peering-inside-linden-lab-ipo-epic-fail/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Peering Inside: Linden Lab IPO = Epic Fail</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/03/24/peering-inside-linden-lab-ipo-epic-fail/">Peering Inside: Linden Lab IPO = Epic Fail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 24 Mar 2008 11:00:00 EST. In fact, just over a year ago when I was a very new blogger on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life/" title="Second Life on Massively"><em>Second Life</em></a> <a href="http://www.secondlifeinsider.com" title="Second Life Insider">Insider</a> I wrote "<a href="http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/02/16/is-the-future-of-the-internet-on-course/" title="Story on SLI">Is the future of the internet on course?</a>" But it's close. I am not claiming in this piece at all that <em>Second Life</em> is perfect. I'm not going to pretend there aren't major changes I'd make in it, as well as major changes in the pipeline that we report on. I'm more thinking from a developmental point of view.<br /><br />Let me tell you a quick story. You'll probably recognise parts of it. About 25 years ago there was this geeky thing called the internet. No-one but the really hard-core used it. About 10 years later it started to become more commonly available. There was a mixed reaction. Some people leapt in. Some dithered. Have a look at <a href="http://www.nissan.com/">www.nissan.com</a> if you don't believe me - it's not a car-manufacturer. Take the example of bookstores - most traditional bookstores didn't do much, but a few people tried, and a few new people got into the mix. Many of the new ones, and many of the traditional ones fell by the wayside. This totally radical new company started to establish itself. Who hasn't heard of, and almost certainly used Amazon (either in the US or in their own country or both.<br /><br />Let's assume the next major evolution of the internet is a 3D virtual environment - like <em>Second Life</em>. Someone will become the Amazon, the Google of the 3D internet. We keep hearing that there is a competitor to <em>Second Life</em> coming along - but they keep failing to actually manifest. The odds suggest that the longer this carries on, the more likely it is that Second Life will be the basis of the 3D internet. It's not a guarantee of course - anyone remember Netscape?<br /><br />So, what do you think? Is 3D internet the next big thing? Is Second Life the Amazon and Google of 3D internet, or is it the Netscape? If it is the Netscape, who is the Firefox? The Internet Explorer? The Safari?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/is-second-life-the-internet-of-the-future/">The Daily Grind: Is Second Life the internet of the future?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 08:00:00 EST. I haven't restarted my browser yet to get it installed, but I'm intrigued by the idea of a "meta-" or "exo-game," that places game values over "real" locations. In <span style="font-style: italic;">PMOG</span>'s case, of course, they're real virtual locations, but here's a game that is really real: <a href="http://www.parallelkingdom.com/"><em>Parallel Kingdom</em> is a mobile MMO</a> that claims to be able to use GPS in <a href="http://code.google.com/android/">Google's Android phone</a> to let players place game information on real world points.<br /><br />The game is <a href="http://www.parallelkingdom.com/faq.shtml">still in beta</a>, and since it requires an Android phone to play (and those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/samsung-wants-android-phone-by-next-year/">haven't actually come out yet</a>), it's really more of just an idea at this point. But yes, the plan is to use GPS to let players "mine resources, build buildings, craft items, trade goods, meet people, start kingdoms, lead wars, and explore the world." As you can see in the demo video above, various virtual resources will be hidden at real world GPS points, and odds are that you'll have to visit those points in real-life to perform activities and play the game.<br /><br />An interesting idea, anyway. It's hard to picture an ongoing game based around actual travel to real-world locations (although <a href="http://www.geocaching.com/">geocaching</a> seems to pull it off pretty well), so it'll be interesting to see what these folks come up with.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/parallel-kingdom-is-a-mobile-mmo-played-in-the-real-world/">Parallel Kingdom is a mobile MMO played in the real world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 17:31:00 EST. I'm not much for predictions, but I'll tell you what I'm hoping for in 2008, since you all asked <em>so nicely</em>:<br /><br /><strong><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> to out-<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_(computer_game)"><em>Diablo</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mythos"><em>Mythos</em></a> with their new MMO</strong> -- Let's face it, playing <em>Mythos</em> is ten kinds of fun, and most of that fun revolves around the type of gameplay that the original <em>Diablo</em> invented, and <a href="http://www.blizzard.com/diablo2/"><em>Diablo II</em> </a>refined. <em>Mythos</em> currently fills the gaping void left behind by Blizzard's continuing not to update the <em>Diablo</em> universe with a new game, but wouldn't you like to see it done up properly?<br /><br /><strong>Google to provide some real competition for Linden Lab</strong> -- Right now, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life">Second Life</a></em> is the only cat of its breed, and it's snoozing in the sun. The ability for users to create their own content is arguably SL's biggest draw, and it's fueled many careers, but the interface issues, rolling restarts, updates that fix things only to break other things, and age verification problems leave me wanting someone to learn from these mistakes and bring us something better. We know Google's working on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/04/google-almost-certainly-creating-multi-user-virtual-world/">something</a> ... here's hoping it's a Third Life.<br /><strong><br />A new genre</strong> -- So far, we've had Fantasy MMOs rule the day, with Science Fiction a close second, and a hodgepodge of other titles kind of <a href="http://www.albatross18.com/new/new_index.asp">experimenting</a> with <a href="http://www.auditionsea.com/">concepts</a> a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/fury">little</a> bit. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/pirates-of-the-caribbean-online">And</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/pirates-of-the-burning-sea">pirates</a>. But I'm looking for something new. Something that combines my love of cryptography with Cthulhu, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/in-development-the-secret-world/">perhaps</a>. Or something that lets me relive my days playing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/in-development-apb/">cops and robbers</a>. Whatever it is, this is the year to strike!<br /><br />Resolutions? Hmm. I guess I resolve to keep playing those smaller MMOs and telling you what I think of them, and trying not to be too dismissive of those I find lacking. Ooh, that's gonna be difficult -- I'm quite fond of the snark, I am. What are your New Year's MMO hopes and wishes?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/my-2008-mmo-hopes-and-wishes/">My 2008 MMO hopes and wishes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 17:00:00 EST. The MMO landscape for next year is already looking extremely promising for all parties involved. Even in their unfinished state, games like <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan">Age of Conan</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/pirates-of-the-burning-sea"><span style="font-style: italic;">Pirates of the Burning Sea</span></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online"><span style="font-style: italic;">Warhammer Online</span></a> already appear like industry trend-setters, and its only a matter of months before we're finally able to sink our collective teeth into fresh, new, massively multiplayer meat. But as we all well know, the excitement doesn't stop with those familiar names.<br /><br />We return once more to deliver the part two of our list of the Top 10 MIA MMOs of 2007 -- those games which we know exist somewhere out there in the ether, but which we know ... well, basically nothing about. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/08/top-10-mia-mmos-of-2007-part-1/">If you missed part 1 of the list</a> which was posted last week, make sure to go back and read over it before proceeding any further. That way, you can know for sure whether or not we skipped that big game that you're looking forward to -- and the ensuing hate mail can, at the very least, be properly informed.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/16/top-10-mia-mmos-of-2007-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Top 10 MIA MMOs of 2007 - part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/12/16/top-10-mia-mmos-of-2007-part-2/">Top 10 MIA MMOs of 2007 - part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 Dec 2007 09:02:00 EST. <p style="text-align: left;">Matt Stone at ASU Web Devil (Arizona State University's online newspaper) has gotten a hold of some internal emails between ASU officials that indicate that they are testing a secret project (referred to as <em>Myworld</em> or sometimes <em>Snow Crash</em>), among strong suggestions that it's for <a target="_blank" href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/about.html">Google</a> and that it's in beta with a small number of students right now.</p>
<p>ASU is something of a poster-child for Google (who even have an office on one of the ASU campuses), and has been an early tester for assorted Google applications.</p><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/asu-testing-snow-crash-for-google/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ASU testing Snow Crash for Google?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/20/asu-testing-snow-crash-for-google/">ASU testing Snow Crash for Google?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 13:30:00 EST. Residents have been stuck with a sometimes-useful Search tool for what feels like forever. According to <a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/19664/">this article</a>, that might change soon. <br /><br />One of the problems with past Search results is that they've been shown by alphabetical ranking, or by amount of traffic received. This new tool will generate results based on relevance, the way Google works. In fact, this new Search will be based on a Google product.<br /><br />The caveat, however, is that for these results to be at all relevant, objects must be tagged with appropriate information. While this will initially be a pain, given the tens of thousands of objects available in <em>SL, </em>it will allow residents to decide for themselves the level of privacy they'd like to inhabit. Once this goes live, you can bet enterprising coders grid-wide will work on providing tools to manage this new step in <em>SL</em>'s growth.<br /><br />(<em>Via <a href="http://www.technologyreview.com">technologyreview</a></em>)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/07/building-a-better-search-tool-in-second-life/">Building a better Search tool in Second Life</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Nov 2007 08:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Googlecraft</em></a>? <a href="http://massively.com/category/everquest"><em>GoogleQuest</em></a>? <a href="http://massively.com/category/pirates-of-the-burning-sea"><em>Pirates of the Google Sea</em></a>? No, really. It could happen. Sort of.<br /><br />Apparently <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/about.html">Google</a> isn't satisfied with how massive it is already; the tech juggernaut might be developing a virtual online world. Okay, so it probably won't really be an MMORPG per say, but it could be something similar to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/second-life">Second Life</a></em>. Rumors of the project have been gaining momentum for a while now, and we here at Massively are laying out all the evidence right here for you to see.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/04/google-almost-certainly-creating-multi-user-virtual-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Google almost certainly creating multi-user virtual world</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/11/04/google-almost-certainly-creating-multi-user-virtual-world/">Google almost certainly creating multi-user virtual world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 04 Nov 2007 10:35:00 EST.
