Rumours over former <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ghostcrawler">Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street</a>'s reasons for quitting were quelled when it was revealed that he's now a lead game designer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/riot-games">Riot Games</a>. <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com"><em>League of Legends</em></a> also kicked off its 2014 competitive season with the first round of the Legends Champion Series. <a href="http://dota2.com"><em>Dota 2</em></a> extended the deadline for its 3-D modeling competition until tonight, and Russian MOBA <a href="http://en.playpw.com/"><em>Prime World</em></a> revealed plans to merge its English and Russian servers together.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a>'s head honcho <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a> answered more questions from fans this week, touching on topics from character death and contracts to NPC AI and playable alien races. The next stage of the <a href="http://elite.frontier.co.uk/"><em>Elite: Dangerous</em></a> alpha was revealed to be a focused test of the multiplayer ship combat gameplay, but its release will cause the first beta stage to be delayed.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://diablo3.com"><em>Diablo III</em></a> enabled background downloading for its upcoming Patch 2.0.1 and the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/reaper-of-souls"><em>Reaper of Souls</em></a> expansion, allowing players to download the game's 6GB pack of artwork and models ahead of launch day. The treasure hunters among you will also be happy to hear that dozens of legendary and set items have been significantly buffed in the latest public test realm patch. And a new infographic published on <a href="http://pathofexile.com"><em>Path of Exile</em></a>'s hardcore new-year race shows that over 25,000 characters were made for the event and just over half survived the entire week.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/20/not-so-massively-lols-lcs-tourney-star-citizens-death-mechan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: LoL's LCS tourney, Star Citizen's death mechanics, and PoE's race infographic</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/20/not-so-massively-lols-lcs-tourney-star-citizens-death-mechan/">Not So Massively: LoL's LCS tourney, Star Citizen's death mechanics, and PoE's race infographic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 Jan 2014 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/greg-street">Greg Street</a>, also known as Ghostcrawler, was the lead systems designer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> for much of the fantasy MMO's life. When he left Blizzard <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/11/27/ghostcrawler-says-farewell-to-blizzard/">late last year</a>, the rumor mill exploded with speculation on where (and why) one of <em>WoW's </em>most familiar and visible developers might be going. As of today, the mystery appears to be solved.<br />
<br />
Information on Street's LinkedIn profile, supported by several industry sources, indicates that he is now working as lead game designer at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/riot-games">Riot Games</a>, known for the massively popular <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/league-of-legends/"><em>League of Legends</em></a>. Street has yet to confirm the move via Twitter or any other official channel.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/01/14/greg-street-is-now-lead-game-designer-at-riot-games/">Greg Street is now lead game designer at Riot Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 14 Jan 2014 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/greg-street">Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street</a>, lead systems designer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>, has announced that he is leaving <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment/">Blizzard Entertainment</a>. Street, who has been with Blizzard for over six years, is one of the most visible <em>World of Warcraft</em> developers, participating often in forum threads and working to improve communications between <em>WoW's </em>players and its design team.<br />
<br />
Street didn't give details as to where he might be headed but did explain that he was pursuing a "great opportunity for something new and exciting."<br />

	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/23/parting-the-mists-world-of-warcraft-turns-eight/"><img alt="Parting the mists: World of Warcraft turns eight" data-src-height="326" data-src-width="580" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/11/klaxxi01.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 298px;" /></a></div>
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warcraft/">World of Warcraft's</a></em> eighth anniversary arrives after a rough year for the franchise. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cataclysm/"><em>Cataclysm</em></a>, the expansion that redesigned much of the old world and trumpeted the return of archvillain Deathwing, also saw subscriber numbers drop from their highest point, reached during the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Wrath-of-the-Lich-King/">Wrath of the Lich King</a></em> years. Players expressed discontent over the empty zones and the lack of anything to do save run endless heroic dungeons or chain battlegrounds.<br />
<br />
It's said that humans often prepare to fight the next war by devising tactics to deal with the last war, and <em>World of Warcraft</em>'s newest expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mists-of-Pandaria"><em>Mists of Pandaria</em></a>, is definitely a reaction to player complaints about the previous one. The past year saw the game transition from one with two separate, segregated endgames to a game with a great deal more variety for players who've reached max level. Whether you loved or hated <em>Cataclysm</em>, you can't deny that the past year has seen more change than the entire expansion dedicated to changing the game ever provided.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/23/parting-the-mists-world-of-warcraft-turns-eight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Parting the mists: World of Warcraft turns eight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/23/parting-the-mists-world-of-warcraft-turns-eight/">Parting the mists: World of Warcraft turns eight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Nov 2012 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em>'s</a> <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/cataclysm"><em>Cataclysm</em></a> expansion is over a year old now, and <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/mists-of-pandaria">Mists of Pandaria</a></em> is looming just over the horizon, which means that it's time for a <em>Cataclysm</em> post-mortem. The infamous pony-promiser <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ghostcrawler">Greg "Ghostcrawler" Streets</a> took some time out of his day to set aside the nerf bat and answer some questions regarding <em>World of Warcraft: Cataclysm</em>. What worked? What didn't? Where the hell is the dance studio, anyway? Just kidding, we still don't know that last one.<br />
	<br />
	One topic that's frequently revisited throughout the post-mortem is the talent system revamp. In a nutshell, Ghostcrawler says that the team (and the players) were largely pleased with the ability to choose a spec and gain powerful, useful skills right at level 10. What didn't work out as planned? "Everything else!" says Ghostcrawler. The team realized that "the talent tree model where you pick up tiny performance increases here and there (and where there's, mathematically, nearly always a 'right' answer and a 'wrong' answer) is not a great model." He goes on to add that <em>Mists of Pandaria</em>'s talent system "should fix this problem once and for all." Well, third time's the charm, right guys?<br />
	<br />
	At any rate, there's more on the discussion table than just talents, so head over to the full article and see what lessons <em>Cataclysm</em> has taught the devs.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-post-mortem-reflects-on-success-fa/">World of Warcraft: Cataclysm post-mortem reflects on success, failure, and lessons learned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard</a> lead systems designer Greg "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/greg-street">Ghostcrawler</a>" Street has penned a small novella on the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> website. The subject of the text dump is talent trees, and more specifically, how they'll be affected by the game's upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mists-of-pandaria"><em>Mists of Pandaria</em></a> expansion.<br />
<br />
Street addresses 10 of the most common concerns that players have voiced regarding the changes, and some of his answers are more interesting than you might think.<br />
<br />
As an example, many <em>WoW</em> players have said that the talent revamp will result in fewer choices across the board. Street admits that this sentiment is "ultimately correct," though he does qualify that with an assertion that players will have more choices that matter. Head to Battle.net to read the rest of his explanations.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/08/blizzard-talks-mists-of-pandaria-talent-tree-tweaks/">Blizzard talks Mists of Pandaria talent tree tweaks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 15:30:00 EST. <br />
Take a moment to think of your single favorite game developer. Is this person your favorite because of his talent? Maybe he made a game that influenced you growing up, or he has a charming personality for interviews. Whatever the reason, we probably all have our favorite game developers whom we hold on a pedestal of greatness.<br />
<br />
But did this one person make the game entirely by himself? Did <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/sid-meier">Sid Meier</a> write every line of code for the <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/civilization"><em>Civilization</em></a> games? Did <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/richard-garriott">Richard Garriott</a> draw every texture in <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/tabula-rasa"><em>Tabula Rasa</em></a>? No, of course they didn't, but their names are right there on the box, showing ownership. Despite my own fanboy appreciation of <a href="http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Brian_Fargo">certain devs</a>, the title of this article says it all. With <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_%28computer_game%29">a few notable exceptions</a>, those who make our favorite games make up a collective group of talented people who come together under proper leadership and design guidelines to create something that keeps us entertained for hours/weeks/months/years.<br />
<br />
So why do we pick out one or two and treat them like rock stars?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/15/the-soapbox-game-developers-are-not-rock-stars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: Game developers are not rock stars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/15/the-soapbox-game-developers-are-not-rock-stars/">The Soapbox: Game developers are not rock stars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. Ghostcrawler, Lead Systems Designer for <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> did just that. <em>"</em></font><em><span class="blue">If you're just burned out, it's also not the worst thing in the world to try out some other games -- the past couple of years has been great for them. Just check back in with WoW every now and then.</span></em><font face="Arial" size="2" color="#000000"><em>"</em><br /><br /><a href="http://blue.mmo-champion.com/28/15211006508-nerfs-and-buffs-101.html">To give this quote some context</a>, the suggestion was one of many directed at those players who simply devour <a href="http://massively.com/tag/wow"><em>WoW</em></a> content faster than <a href="http://blizzard.com">Blizzard</a> can dish it out. <a href="http://massively.com/ghostcrawler">Ghostcrawler</a>'s other suggestions include rolling an alt, crafting, completing a task list of achievements, or perhaps going back and finishing up all the quests you might have missed. It's a fairly obvious, yet shockingly honest statement to make given the current MMO landscape. It seems <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/blizzard-yes-some-players-left-for-aoc/">most people who leave <em>WoW</em> for other games</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/wow-players-coming-back-from-the-war/">inevitably return</a> even though the game is <strike>over</strike> nearly five years old right now. This may not always be the case, but obviously Blizzard remains confident if they're willing to make a statement like that.<br /><br />[Via: <a href="http://playervsdeveloper.blogspot.com/2009/02/official-confirmation-of-new-wow.html">Player vs. Developer</a>]</font><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/wow-lead-systems-designer-tells-people-to-play-other-games/">WoW Lead Systems Designer tells people to play other games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 18:00:00 EST. Our sister site <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/11/09/lichborne-talents-for-catching-up-blood-spec/">WoW Insider has some dirt</a> on the upcoming addition of dual specialization in <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a></em>. This dirt was supplied by a blue (a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> employee) post on the official game forums. The ability to have one character with two sets of talent builds and hotbars has been a hotly desired feature every since Blizzard brought it up back at the last BlizzCon.<br /><br />It sounds like players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/12/06/the-new-york-times-logs-back-into-world-of-warcraft/">can expect flipping between</a> talent builds to be trivial in towns and such, but not nearly so trivial out when out in the wide open world. The blue poster, known as <a href="http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=13287570986&amp;pageNo=1&amp;sid=1#2">Ghostcrawler, also said</a> that the current goal is to get this new feature in the next big content patch. When will that be? It's anyone's guess, but hopefully it's only a few more months out -- we're starting to get that re-spec itch again.<hr />
